Abstract

On the background of the secularization-thesis - here understood as the religion's loss of its social and cultural capacity to impose and regulate beliefs and practices of the people - and the corresponding observation that modern societies tend to organize themselves without religious reference, this paper studies the relationship between the Pentecostalism and secularization process in a social periphery of São Bernardo do Campo City. The Pentecostalism is an heir of a manifestation of Christianity, which developed parallel to the process of Entzauberung der Welt (Weber); it's, according to Gauchet "a religion to get out of religion". However, it seems that the Pentecostals re-enchant life. Hence, the present article raises the question if the Pentecostals are capable of avoiding the impact of the advance of modern society, including the particular circumstances of the urban periphery in contemporary Latin American settings. To answer this question, the article analyses the spectrum of Pentecostal churches located at the periphery of the city of São Bernardo do Campo city. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
