International audience; The differentiation of solid planets with segregation of metal from silicates happens during the Hadean time while the planet is still growing by accretion. The separation of metal occurs when at least the metallic phase is liquid and proceeds by a combination of transport by diapiric instabilities and by more diffuse percolation flow. In this paper we develop a formalism derived from Bercovici et al. that can handle simultaneously two components, silicates and metal, and where the metal can be present both in solid and liquid states. The mechanical equations are non-Boussinesq as the lateral density variations are of the same order as the density itself. When the metal is solid, the metal and the silicates are locked together and we treat their mixture as a single-phase fluid where density is function of composition (iron-silicate proportions). When metal is liquid, it can separate from the silicates and the two phases interact through shear stress ( e. g. Darcy flow) and normal stress. The evolution of the volume proportion of liquid iron is controlled by the difference of pressure between the solid and liquid phases. The energy conservation equation takes into account the different mechanisms by which the gravitational energy is dissipated as heat. The 2-D Cartesian numerical code that we implemented to solve these equations makes use of numerical techniques that have not been previously used in geophysical two-phase modelling; we discuss the numerical aspects and benchmark the solutions. We present simulations of core-mantle differentiation showing that the first impact that melts the iron phase near the surface is potentially able to trigger the whole core-mantle segregation in a runaway phenomenon. The threshold of this instability in terms of the impactor and planetary size and the initial planetary temperature is investigated. The segregation of the metal occurs by a mechanism that was not suggested before and which is intermediate between the usual diapir instability and a porosity wave. Although we cannot explore the whole parameter space of our numerical model, we show various simulations that clarify the role of the most important parameters, such as the solid and metal viscosities or the depth dependence of gravity

We prove a derived version of the Gabriel-Popescu theorem in the framework of dg-categories and t-structures. This exhibits any pretriangulated dg-category with a suitable t-structure (such that its heart is a Grothendieck abelian category) as a t-exact localization of a derived dg-category of dg-modules. We give an original proof based on a generalization of Mitchell's argument in "A quick proof of the Gabriel-Popesco theorem" and involving derived injective objects. As an application, we also give a short proof that derived categories of Grothendieck abelian categories have a unique dg-enhancement., 43 pages, comments are welcome

An increasing number of studies has already investigated phonetic first language attrition and cross-linguistic influence in the L1 speech of late bilinguals. Nevertheless, none of these studies has yet to examine phonetic first language attrition and cross-linguistic influence in the L1 speech of late Czech-French bilinguals. This thesis aims to fill this gap. The main hypothesis predicting that phonetic cross-linguistic influence will occur in L1 speech of late Czech-French bilinguals was tested in two studies by comparing the L1 speech production in a reading aloud task and semi-spontaneous speech of late Czech-French bilinguals with that of Czech monolinguals. The first study investigated if the L1 speech of 14 late Czech-French bilinguals may be perceived as less typically Czech sounding compared to that of 11 Czech monolinguals by Czech monolingual listeners. The second study compared the acoustic properties of 17 late Czech-French bilinguals’ vowels, /r/, /ɦ/, /x/ with those of 17 Czech monoling uals. The properties of non-conclusive intonation patterns and the use of final schwa was also compared. The tested hypothesis was predominantly confirmed . The results of the perception experiment showed that the bilinguals’ semi-spontaneous speech was perceived as significantly less typically Czech sounding compared to that of the monolinguals by the Czech monolinguals listeners. The results of the acoustic analyses suggest that phonetic cross-linguistic influence occurred in several of the bilinguals’ vowels, their /r/, /ɦ/, /x/, non-conclusive intonation patterns and use of final schwa. Interestingly, a certain number of our results suggests that dissimilation and assimilation effects may coexist in the same L1 phoneme of a late bilingual., Un nombre croissant d'études a déjà examiné l'attrition phonétique et l'influence translinguistique dans la parole en L1 de bilingues tardifs. Néanmoins, aucune étude ne les a encore examinées dans la parole en L1 de bilingues tardifs tchèque-français. Cette thèse vise à combler cette lacune . Nous faisons l'hypothèse que l'influence phonétique translinguistique se produira dans la parole en L1 des bilingues tardifs tchèque-français. L'hypothèse est testée dans deux études en comparant la production de la parole dans une tâche de lecture à voix haute et la parole semi-spontanée en L1 de bilingues tardifs tchèque-français avec celle de monolingues tchèques. La première étude vise à déterminer si la parole en L1 de 14 bilingues tardifs tchèque-français peut être perçue comme étant moins typiquement tchèque que celle de 11 monolingues tchèques par des auditeurs monolingues tchèques. La deuxième étude compare les propriétés acoustiques des voyelles de 17 bilingues tardifs tchèque-français, de leur /r/, /ɦ/, /x/ avec les propriétés acoustiques de ces segments dans la parole des de 17 monolingues tchèques . Les propriétés des patrons intonatifs non-conclusifs et l'usage du schwa final sont également comparés. L'hypothèse testée a été majoritairement confirmée : la parole semi-spontanée des bilingues a été perçue comme étant moins typiquement tchèque que celle des monolingues par les auditeurs et l'influence phonétique translinguistique s'est produite dans plusieurs voyelles des bilingues, de leur /r/, /ɦ/, /x/, patrons intonatifs non-conclusifs et l’usage du schwa final. En outre, certains de nos résultats suggèrent que les effets de dissimilation et d'assimilation peuvent coexister dans le même phonème de la L1 d'un bilingue tardif.

International audience; In this period of global pandemic and confinement to our homes, the end of art is not only a philosophical hypothesis, it is a fact of society. We have experienced that modern societies, those that were able to make art an absolute at one point in their history, no longer need the arts, or the physical presence of artists and spectators, or have considered them inessential, and therefore contingent. Is this what G. W. F. Hegel prophesied with his thesis of the end of art? In my presentation I would like to clarify this by dealing with several points and by returning to the conception of art by nineteenth-century French writers. 1) First, I will give a reminder of the different ways in which Hegel's theme of the end of art can be interpreted. 2) Then, I will give a second reminder concerning the reception of Hegel in France, of the Aesthetic in particular and of the translations of the Aesthetic. 3) Finally, I propose to study three writers who determine three ways of conceiving the appropriation of Hegel in the 19th century and of the theme of the end of art: Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire and Gustave Flaubert.; Dans cette période de pandémie mondiale et d’enfermement dans nos maisons, la fin de l'art n'est pas seulement une hypothèse philosophique, c'est un fait de société. Nous avons fait l'expérience que les sociétés modernes, celles qui ont pu faire de l’art un absolu à un moment de leur histoire, n'ont plus besoin des arts, ou de la présence physique des artistes et des spectateurs, ou les ont considérés comme inessentiels, et donc contingents. Est-ce cela que G. W. F. Hegel a prophétisé avec sa thèse de la fin de l’art ? Dans mon exposé je voudrais clarifier cela en traitant plusieurs points et en revenant à la conception de l’art des écrivains français du XIXe siècle. 1) D’abord je ferai un premier rappel sur les différentes façons dont on peut interpréter le thème de la fin de l’art chez Hegel. 2) Puis, je ferai une deuxième rappel concernant la réception de Hegel en France, de l’Esthétique en particulier et des traductions de l’Esthétique. 3) Enfin, je propose d’étudier trois cas écrivains qui déterminent trois façons de concevoir l’appropriation de Hegel au XIXe siècle et de la thématique de la fin de l’art : Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire et Gustave Flaubert.

χ-bounded classes are studied here in the context of star colorings and, more generally, χ p -colorings. This fits to a general scheme of sparsity and leads to natural extensions of the notion of bounded expansion class. In this paper we solve two conjectures related to star coloring (i.e. χ 2 ) boundedness . One of the conjectures is disproved and in fact we determine which weakening holds true. χ p -boundedness leads to more stability and we give structural characterizations of (strong and weak) χ p -bounded classes. We also generalize a result of Wood relating the chromatic number of a graph to the star chromatic number of its 1-subdivision. As an application of our characterizations, among other things, we show that for every odd integer g > 3 even hole-free graphs G contain at most φ ( g , ω ( G ) ) | G | holes of length g.

A sequence of graphs is FO-convergent if the probability of satisfaction of every first-order formula converges. A graph modeling is a graph, whose domain is a standard probability space, with the property that every definable set is Borel. It was known that FO-convergent sequence of graphs do not always admit a modeling limit, but it was conjectured that FO-convergent sequences of sufficiently sparse graphs have a modeling limits. Precisely, two conjectures were proposed:1.If a FO-convergent sequence of graphs is residual, that is if for every integer d the maximum relative size of a ball of radius d in the graphs of the sequence tends to zero, then the sequence has a modeling limit.2.A monotone class of graphs ${\cal C}$ has the property that every FO-convergent sequence of graphs from ${\cal C}$ has a modeling limit if and only if ${\cal C}$ is nowhere dense, that is if and only if for each integer p there is $N\left( p \right)$ such that no graph in ${\cal C}$ contains the pth subdivision of a complete graph on $N\left( p \right)$ vertices as a subgraph.In this article we prove both conjectures. This solves some of the main problems in the area and among others provides an analytic characterization of the nowhere dense–somewhere dense dichotomy.

International audience; This article presents the correspondence of the Senegalese Ousmane Sembene with Soviet writers, officials and his translator, as well as a discussion he held with Soviet writers at the house of the Union of Writers of the USSR in Moscow in October 1958. These documents come from either the collection of the Union of Writers, which is preserved by the Russian State Archive of Literature and Arts (RGALI), or from the one of the Union of Soviet Friendship Societies with Foreign Countries which is held by the State Archive of the Russian Federation (GARF). As well as testifying to the broad network of Soviet-African relations, the documents shed light on Sembene’s biography and his early literary and cinematic work. Apart from the practical aspects related to the translation and publication of Sembene’s texts, the documents provide information about the impact of his work in the Soviet Union and the way it was received by his Soviet interlocutors. At the same time they show a number of expectations the Soviets had from Sembene, namely, to promote Soviet culture and literature in Africa. Some letters touch upon the role of cinema in Africa and reveal Sembene’s views and ambitions. Moreover, the young writer and aspirant filmmaker does not hide his political views. He criticizes the theorists and proponents of négritude and castigates the Society of African Culture, headed by Alioune Diop. Both the discussion and the correspondence illustrate Sembene’s views and present the picture of his personal ties and intellectual affinities with his comrades and benefactors on the Eastern side of the Iron Curtain.; À travers deux sources inédites – une discussion orale retranscrite et une correspondance de l’écrivain et cinéaste sénégalais Ousmane Sembène avec différentes personnalités soviétiques (traductrice, savants, écrivains) –, les auteur·e·s de l’article éclairent le réseau des relations africano-soviétiques qui se mettent en place au tournant des années 1950 et 1960, soit avant les indépendances. Les documents présentés ici ont été retrouvés dans les archives russes : dans le fonds de l’Union des écrivains de l’URSS qui se trouve aux Archives d’État de la littérature et des arts (RGALI) et dans celui de l’Union des sociétés d’amitié avec les pays étrangers, conservé aux Archives d’État de la Fédération de Russie (GARF). Au-delà des rapports strictement institutionnels qui se tissent durant la guerre froide, entre pays communistes et pays d’Afrique, la force de ces documents est de révéler les rapports interpersonnels qui se nouent entre l’écrivain sénégalais et différentes personnalités soviétiques, leurs affinités amicales et intellectuelles, d’éclairer également les désaccords théoriques entre Sembène et les tenants de la négritude et de la Société africaine de culture. De plus, ces documents permettent une approche originale de la biographie d’Ousmane Sembène : les lettres présentées donnent à voir la genèse de son œuvre littéraire, sa traduction en russe et la réception de ses écrits en Union soviétique, mais aussi les circonstances et modalités de sa venue au cinéma.

International audience; We consider, for every positive integer a, probability distributions on subsets of vertices of a graph with the property that every vertex belongs to the random set sampled from this distribution with probability at most 1/a. Among other results, we prove that for every positive integer a and every planar graph G, there exists such a probability distribution with the additional property that for any set X in the support of the distribution, the graph G − X has component-size at most (∆(G) − 1) a+O(√ a) , or treedepth at most O(a 3 log 2 (a)). We also provide nearly-matching lower bounds.

Preservation is a major obstacle in paleoanthropological studies. Since 1990s virtual methods have become an important part of anthropological research helping to overcome preservation problems in two principle ways: they improve extraction of information from a fragmentary material, and they permit a more objective reconstruction of fragmentary and incomplete remains. This thesis has focused on the virtual reconstruction of two fossil specimens: the modern human cranium from the Upper Paleolithic site of Zlatý kůň (ZK; Czech Republic) and the Neandertal Regourdou 1 (R1) pelvis (France). The reconstruction of the ZK cranium allowed us to revise sex attribution and analyze morphological affinity. Based on the secondary sex diagnosis, the ZK individual was most probably a female and exhibits a great affinity to Early Upper Paleolithic population. The R1 pelvis shows considerable asymmetry that was first analyzed on the sacrum in comparison with healthy modern humans and Neandertals. The asymmetry exceeds normal variation observed in the extant population and could have related to asymmetrical load dissipation. Therefore, the asymmetry was considered in the subsequent preliminary pelvic reconstruction which allowed us to assess sex of the individual and to analyze transverse dimensions of the pelvic canal and orientation of the sacrum in the pelvis. Based on the newly available sexually dimorphic traits, the R1 individual was probably a male. Transverse canal diameters indicate slightly wider outlet than in modern males, but they show similar relationship as in other archaic humans. Regarding the high degree of correlation between sacral orientation and lumbar lordosis, R1 had slightly higher lumbar lordosis angle (close to modern mean) than has been proposed for most of other Neandertals. This slightly extends the previously suggested Neandertal range of variation, which, however, still remains in the lower portion of modern human variation. In other presented studies, we focused on sex estimation from fragmentary remains and compatibility of 3D data digitization techniques. Specifically, we proposed a method for sex estimation from the posterior ilium and adjusted the visual method of Brůžek (2002) to the use on fragmentary material. Finally, we compared two different 3D scanners and their outcomes. They did not significantly differ with regard to subsequent anthropological analyses (sex and age estimation), but they may provide differential results in highly structured areas., La préservation est un obstacle majeur dans les études paléoanthropologiques. Depuis les années 1990, les méthodes virtuelles sont devenues un élément important de la recherche anthropologique aidant à surmonter les problèmes de préservation de deux manières principales : elles améliorent l'extraction d'informations à partir de matériel fragmentaire et elles permettent une reconstruction plus objective des fossiles fragmentaires et incomplets. Cette thèse s'est concentrée sur la reconstruction virtuelle de deux spécimens fossiles: le crâne humain moderne du site du Paléolithique supérieur de Zlatý kůň (ZK ; République tchèque) et le bassin néandertalien de Regourdou 1 (R1 ; (France). La reconstruction du crâne de ZK nous a permis de réviser la diagnose sexuelle et d'analyser son affinité morphologique. Selon la diagnose sexuelle secondaire, l'individu de ZK était très probablement une femme et le crâne présente une grande affinité avec la population de la période ancienne du Paléolithique supérieur. Le bassin de R1 montre une asymétrie considérable qui a été analysée sur le sacrum en comparaison avec un échantillon moderne d’individus sains et un échantillon néandertalien. L'asymétrie dépasse considérablement la variation dans la population récente et elle aurait pu être liée à une transmission déséquilibrée du poids. Par conséquent, l'asymétrie a été prise en compte dans la reconstruction pelvienne qui a permis d'évaluer le sexe de l'individu et d'analyser les dimensions transversales du canal pelvien et l'orientation du sacrum. Sur la base des caractères sexuels disponibles, l'individu de R1 était probablement un homme. Les dimensions du canal pelvien indiquent une sortie légèrement plus large que chez les hommes modernes, mais ils montrent une relation similaire à celle d'autres spécimens archaïques. En considérant la corrélation forte entre l'orientation de sacrum et la lordose lombaire, R1 avait l’angle de lordose lombaire légèrement plus élevé (proche de la moyenne moderne) que celui proposé pour la plupart des autres Néandertaliens. Cela étend légèrement l’intervale de variation néandertalienne précédemment suggérée, qui reste cependant dans la partie inférieure de la variation moderne. Dans d'autres études présentées, nous nous sommes concentrés sur l'estimation du sexe à partir de restes fragmentaires et l’analyse de compatibilité des techniques de numérisation des données 3D. Plus précisément, nous avons proposé une méthode d'estimation du sexe à partir de l'ilium postérieur et nous avons ajusté la méthode visuelle de Brůžek (2002) à l'utilisation sur un matériel fragmentaire. Enfin, nous avons comparé deux scanners 3D et leurs résultats. Ils ne diffèrent pas de manière significative en ce qui concerne les analyses anthropologiques (estimation du sexe et de l'âge), mais ils peuvent fournir des résultats différentiels par rapport au détail dans des parties plus structurées.

In this paper we introduce a general framework for the study of limits of relational structures in general and graphs in particular, which is based on a combination of model theory and (functional) analysis. We show how the various approaches to graph limits fit to this framework and that they naturally appear as "tractable cases" of a general theory. As an outcome of this, we provide extensions of known results. We believe that this put these into next context and perspective. For example, we prove that the sparse--dense dichotomy exactly corresponds to random free graphons. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of sparse structures. First, we consider limits of structures with bounded diameter connected components and we prove that in this case the convergence can be "almost" studied component-wise. We also propose the structure of limits objects for convergent sequences of sparse structures. Eventually, we consider the specific case of limits of colored rooted trees with bounded height and of graphs with bounded tree-depth, motivated by their role of elementary brick these graphs play in decompositions of sparse graphs, and give an explicit construction of a limit object in this case. This limit object is a graph built on a standard probability space with the property that every first-order definable set of tuples is measurable. This is an example of the general concept of {\em modeling} we introduce here. Neuroprostanes are cyclic oxygenated metabolites formed in vivo from docosahexaenoic acid, the main polyunsaturated fatty acid of the human brain. The non-enzymatic auto-oxidative biosynthesis provides neuroprostanes non-selectively as mixtures of regio- and diastereoisomers, making their isolation and identification difficult without primary standards. Thus, synthetic material is necessary to investigate the biological properties of individual molecules as well as the potential of neuroprostanes as biomarkers of oxidative stress in medical diagnostics. Two different synthetic approaches targeting the most abundant regioisomeric series of neuroprostanes are reported.First, an enantioselective strategy toward an asymmetric core of cyclopentenone neuroprostanes relying on an organocatalyzed Michael addition was developed. A complementary racemic synthesis involving diastereoselective vicinal difunctionalization is also described. The assembly of the full carbon framework of the target natural product was accomplished via a double olefin metathesis and Wittig olefination.In the second part, a unified approach to lipid metabolites bearing a 3-hydroxypentenyl side chain is reported. The key steps involved a multiple alkynylation of a central functionalized precursor, constructed by an oxidative dianion radical cyclization, and a stereoselective semihydrogenation. The strategy provides access to a wide range of neuroprostanes thanks to an orthogonal protection of the key intermediate and was applied to the total synthesis of a closely related F3t-isoprostane derived from eicosapentaenoic acid., Les neuroprostanes sont des métabolites cycliques oxygénés générés in vivo à partir de de l’acide docosahexaénoïque, l’acide gras principal polyinsaturé le plus présent dans le cerveau humain. La biosynthèse des neuroprostanes est un processus auto-oxydant non-enzymatique, fournissant les neuroprostanes sous forme d’un mélange de régioisomères et diastéréomères. Ce fait rend l’isolation ou l’identification des neuroprostanes difficiles sans standards analytiques. Par conséquent, les composés synthétiques sont indispensables pour établir les propriétés biologiques ainsi que le potentiel de neuroprostanes en tant que biomarqueurs du stress oxydant dans le diagnostic de certaines maladies. Deux approches synthétiques différentes vers les régioisomères les plus abondants des neuroprostanes sont présentées.La première stratégie envisage une synthèse du noyau asymétrique des neuroprostanes de type cyclopentenones par une addition de Michael énantiosélective organocatalysée. Une variante de synthèse racémique complémentaire mise en place par une double fonctionnalisation vicinale et également décrite. Le squelette de la molécule cible a été assemblé par une double métathèse d’alcènes et une oléfination de Wittig.Dans la deuxième partie, une stratégie unifiée vers des métabolites lipidiques portant une chaine latérale de type 3-hydroxypentényl a été développée dont les étapes clés comprennent une alcynilation multiple d’un précurseur central fonctionnalisé, construit par une cyclisation radicalaire oxydante d’un dianion, et une semi-hydrogénation stéréosélective. La stratégie ouvre l’accès à une variété de neuroprostanes grâce à une protection orthogonale de l’intermédiaire clé validée par la synthèse totale de la F3t-isoprostane, un métabolite de l’acide eicosapentaénoïque.

International audience; The volume presents the proceedings of the 42nd international colloquium of AFEAF, held in Prague (Czech Republic) from 10th to 13th May 2018. The aim of the colloquium was to furnish a new overview of the Iron Age cultures of west and central Europe. A key objective was to examine the relevance of the cultural groups which are currently either formally recognized or less firmly established, and more generally to investigate the interpretation of these archaeological entities at different chronological and spatial scales. This volume includes thirty-five contributions derived from twenty-five presentations given, and ten posters exhibited, during the conference. The articles in the first section examine historiographical and methodological issues and provide solid underpinnings on which to develop considerations of Iron Age cultural phenomena. The following, thematic contributions furnish European-scale syntheses on types of material culture or of structure, as well as on forms of social organization and on ritual practices. The third part of the volume considers regional approaches; here the identification of cultural markers, the drawing of distinctions between neighbouring groups, and the perennial question of hybrid cultures and zones displaying admixtures of cultural traits are explored. Overall, these proceedings demonstrate the diversity of approaches which are now being deployed, an indication of the important reconfiguration under way in both the problematiques and methods of approach related to the conference theme.; Ce volume rassemble les actes du 42e colloque international de l’AFEAF, tenu à Prague (République tchèque) du 10 au 13 mai 2018. Le colloque avait pour ambition de proposer un nouvel état des recherches sur les cultures de l’âge du Fer en Europe centrale et occidentale. Il s’agissait notamment d’interroger le degré de pertinence des groupes culturels aujourd’hui reconnus ou pressentis, mais aussi, plus largement, de poser la question de l’interprétation de ces ensembles archéologiques, à différentes échelles de temps et d’espace. Le présent volume regroupe trente-cinq contributions, reflet de vingt-cinq communications et dix posters présentés lors du colloque. Les articles traitant de questions historiographiques et méthodologiques fournissent en liminaire une base solide pour asseoir nos réflexions sur les phénomènes culturels de l’âge du Fer. Les contributions thématiques qui suivent livrent des synthèses sur des types de mobilier ou de structures, des formes d’organisation ou de rites, à l’échelle européenne. La troisième partie rassemble des approches régionales où l’identification des marqueurs, les différences avec les groupes voisins et la question récurrente des cultures hybrides et des zones mixtes sont explorées. Ces actes témoignent au total de la diversité des approches mises en œuvre, signe d’un renouvellement important des problématiques et méthodes d’étude en lien avec le thème de ce colloque.

The dissertation presents an analysis of the social representations of nanotechnology in the various local (cultural) contexts of their medialisation and studies the relationship which exists between metaphorical structures and the evolution of nanotechnology controversies. The relationship depends on multiple contexts—social, political, cultural, and epistemic—where both actors (agents) and structures must to be taken into consideration to give an account of particular events and trajectories of mattering. Metaphors affect, in particular, imaginaries of the nanoscale and future expectations of benefits and risks, and they also provide a semantic link to narrative elements and storytelling. They have proved to be both supportive and restrictive to the development of nanotechnology. The data used in this study ranges between the years 1999 and 2015, using approx. two thousand articles from Web of Science, the European Commission (CORDIS), and Czech, French, and British national (print) media. By integrating two analytical approaches, metaphor-in-discourse and the ‘actantial’ model of narrative, the analysis focuses on matters of concern and related metaphorical patterns and structures. Accordingly, the study is followed by a critical approach to the implications of metaphor use and related transformations linked to the dynamic of discourse and nanotechnology development. The case studies reveal that metaphors have three capacities: activating, generative, and organisational. These are based on metaphorical concepts linked to narrative structures and discursive formations. The relationship between metaphor and nanotechnology is isomorphic and made of paradox. Metaphors create protected spaces for technology development, but they also represent a genuine resource to be exploited by inserting ambiguity into the social processes. En conséquence, l’étude emploie une approche critique des implications de l’utilisation de la métaphore et transformations liées à la dynamique du discours. Les études de cas présentées révèlent que les métaphores possèdent trois capacités de transformation: initiatique, générative et organisationnelle. Ces capacités sont basées sur les concepts métaphoriques, liées aux structures narratives et les formations discursives. La relation entre la métaphore et la nanotechnologie est une relation isomorphe et paradoxale. Les métaphores créent des « espaces protégés » et représentent également un instrument à exploiter en ajoutant « l’ambiguïté » dans des processus sociaux. En conclusion, les capacités et biais de métaphores, la convergence sociotechnique et la pluralité des régimes ontologiques sont des défis fondamentaux pour l’évaluation de la nanotechnologie.

The dissertation presents an analysis of the social representations of nanotechnology in the various local (cultural) contexts of their medialisation and studies the relationship which exists between metaphorical structures and the evolution of nanotechnology controversies. The relationship depends on multiple contexts—social, political, cultural, and epistemic—where both actors (agents) and structures must to be taken into consideration to give an account of particular events and trajectories of mattering. Metaphors affect, in particular, imaginaries of the nanoscale and future expectations of benefits and risks, and they also provide a semantic link to narrative elements and storytelling. They have proved to be both supportive and restrictive to the development of nanotechnology. The data used in this study ranges between the years 1999 and 2015, using approx. two thousand articles from Web of Science, the European Commission (CORDIS), and Czech, French, and British national (print) media. By integrating two analytical approaches, metaphor-in-discourse and the ‘actantial’ model of narrative, the analysis focuses on matters of concern and related metaphorical patterns and structures. Accordingly, the study is followed by a critical approach to the implications of metaphor use and related transformations linked to the dynamic of discourse and nanotechnology development. The case studies reveal that metaphors have three capacities: activating, generative, and organisational. Mitosis is tightly controlled by ubiquitin signaling and is crucial to maintain genome integrity. In this work, I investigated the function of the deubiquitinating enzyme UCHL3 and the E3 ubiquitin ligase TRIM15. I observed that TRIM15 regulates cell adhesion and motility. UCHL3 was identified in a high-content screen, as a critical factor controlling the chromosome alignment and segregation. Interestingly, it has been previously reported that UCHL3 levels are altered in various cancer types. Using a proteomic approach, we identified Aurora B kinase as a potential mediator of these phenotypes. Since aneuploidy is a hallmark of many cancers, and cell adhesion plays an important role in tumor invasion and metastasis, my results suggest that both proteins could play a role in carcinogenesis., La mitose est précisément contrôlée par la signalisation via l'ubiquitine et est essentielle au maintien de l'intégrité du génome. Dans ce travail, j'ai étudié la fonction de l'enzyme de dé-ubiquitination, UCHL3 et de la ligase E3-ubiquitine, TRIM15. J'ai observé que TRIM15 régule l'adhésion et la mobilité des cellules. UCHL3 a été identifié par un criblage à haut contenu, en tant que facteur critique contrôlant l'alignement et la ségrégation des chromosomes. Fait intéressant, il a déjà été rapporté que les niveaux d’expression d’UCHL3 sont altérés dans divers types de cancer. En utilisant une approche protéomique, nous avons identifié la kinase Aurora B comme un médiateur potentiel de ces phénotypes. Comme l'aneuploïdie est la marque de nombreux cancers et que l'adhésion cellulaire joue un rôle important dans l'invasion des tumeurs et les métastases, mes résultats suggèrent que ces deux protéines pourraient jouer un rôle dans la carcinogenèse.

We consider, for every positive integer $a$, probability distributions on subsets of vertices of a graph with the property that every vertex belongs to the random set sampled from this distribution with probability at most $1/a$. Among other results, we prove that for every positive integer $a$ and every planar graph $G$, there exists such a probability distribution with the additional property that for any set $X$ in the support of the distribution, the graph $G-X$ has component-size at most $(\Delta(G)-1)^{a+O(\sqrt{a})}$, or treedepth at most $O(a^3\log_2(a))$. We also provide nearly-matching lower bounds.

Two important mechanisms in preparation of ultrathin films of magnetic oxides were systematically investigated in this work. First, influence of epitaxial strain on resulting magneto-optical properties of La₂/₃Sr₁/₃MnO₃ (LSMO) ultrathin films was studied. The investigated films were grown by pulsed laser deposition on four different substrates, providing a broad range of induced epitaxial strains. Magnetic properties were found to deteriorate with increasing value of the epitaxial strain, as expected due to the unit cell distortion increasingly deviating from the bulk and effect of the magnetically inert layer. A combination of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy was used to determine spectra of the diagonal and off-diagonal elements of permittivity tensor. The off-diagonal elements confirmed presence of two previously reported electronic transitions in spectra of all films. Moreover, they revealed another electronic transition around 4.3 eV only in spectra of films grown under compressive strain. We proposed classification of this transition as crystal field paramagnetic Mn t2g → eg transition, which was further supported by ab initio calculations. A key role of strain in controlling electronic structure of ultrathin perovskite films was demonstrated. Dynamic application of strain via use of piezoelectric underlayer remained inconclusive, requiring further improvement of the strain transfer from the piezoelectric layer into the LSMO. Second, influence of substrate miscut on magnetization dynamics in SrRuO₃ (SRO) was studied. As expected we found that high miscut angle leads to suppression of multi-variant growth. By means of magnetic force microscopy we showed that presence of multiple SRO variants leads to higher density of defects acting as pinning or nucleation sites for the magnetic domains, which consequently results in deterioration of magnetic properties. We demonstrated that use of vicinal substrate with high miscut angle is important for fabrication of high quality SRO ultrathin films with low density of crystallographic defects and excellent magnetic properties.; Deux mécanismes importants reliant la préparation des couches ultraminces d’oxydes magnétiques à leurs propriétés physiques ont été étudiés dans ce travail. En premier lieu, l’influence de la contrainte épitaxiale sur les propriétés magnéto-optiques de la manganite La₂/₃Sr₁/₃MnO₃ (LSMO) a été étudiée. Les couches ultraminces ont été déposées par ablation laser pulsé sur quatre substrats différents, ce qui a fourni différentes valeurs statiques de la contrainte épitaxiale. Les propriétés magnétiques ont été révélées comme se détériorant avec l’augmentation de la contrainte, ce qui était prévisible à cause de la distorsion grandissante de la maille unitaire ainsi qu’à cause de l’effet de la couche magnétiquement inerte. Nous avons proposé la classification de cette transition comme une transition paramagnétique du champ cristallin Mn t2g → eg. Cette classification a été confortée par des calculs ab initio. Nous avons ainsi montré le rôle clé de la contrainte dans le contrôle des propriétés magnéto-optiques des couches pérovskites ultraminces. En revanche, l’application dynamique de la contrainte par l’utilisation d’une sous-couche piézoélectrique est restée peu concluante. Le transfert de la contrainte entre la sous-couche piézoélectrique et la couche LSMO nécessite des améliorations ultérieures. En second lieu, l’influence de la désorientation du substrat a été étudiée par rapport à la dynamique de l’aimantation dans l’oxyde SrRuO₃ (SRO). Comme attendu, nous avons trouvé qu’un grand angle de désorientation mène à la suppression de la croissance de plusieurs variants cristallographiques du SRO. Au moyen de la microscopie à force magnétique, nous avons montré que la présence de plusieurs variants de SRO mène à l’augmentation de la densité de défauts agissant comme points d’ancrage ou de nucléation pour les domaines magnétiques. Nous avons donc montré que l’emploi d’un substrat vicinal est important pour la fabrication des couches ultraminces de SRO de haute qualité, avec une faible densité de défauts cristallographiques et d’excellentes propriétés magnétiques.

Český výraz oko/oči můžeme kromě kontextu lékařství a anatomie najít ve velkém množství idiomů zobrazujících způsoby dívání se, nebo odkazujících na to, jak někdo nebo něco vypadá. To se často vztahuje k projevům vyjadřujícím myšlenku, emoci, pocit, nebo přání v rámci mezilidských vztahů; s okem se často setkáváme i v metaforách. Víceméně přímou identifikaci můžeme najít v uměleckých dílech, ale i v příslovích, lidových písních a pohádkách. Pohádky přitom vyjadřují v rámci jednotlivých kulturních kontextů moudrost předávanou ústně z generace na generaci. Tento příspěvek se soustředí na interpretaci tří pohádek vztahujících se k českému kulturnímu prostředí, ve kterých hraje významnou roli právě oko., Medical and anatomical context apart, the Czech oko [eye] can be found in a great number of idioms related to the modalities of looking and/or appearing, which often includes an interpersonal relation expressing thought, emotion, feeling or desire; a metaphorical eye is frequent too. A more or less straightforward identification can be pinpointed as conveyed through works of arts, proverbs, folk songs and fairy tales. Bearing in mind that fairy tales represent the traditionally conceived wisdom and are in a culture transmitted orally for generations, this paper focuses on the interpretation of three of those belonging to the Czech cultural context in which oko [eye] is a significant item.
