Abstract: International audience; Cellular materials, in particular metal or polymer foams and beam lattices, are characterized by a complex architecture where the material is concentrated in slender struts. This study is concerned with the construction of numerically efficient samplespecific digital twin for the analysis and characterization of the mechanical behavior of such meta-materials. A method to build an explicit, light, and analysis-suitable isogeometric beam model directly from digital images is proposed. More precisely, as a main contribution, the Virtual Image Correlation method is extended to the case of multiple interconnected beams with varying cross-sections. Special care is also given to the initialization for better efficiency and robustness. Synthetic and real examples of increasing complexity, i.e. curved beams, lattices, and foams, are presented to account for the performance of the developed workflow from digital images to an isogeometric twin for mechanical modelling and simulation.

Abstract: International audience; Background: Patients suffering from treatment-resistant depression (TRD) are at risk of suicide. Sleep and circadian rhythm alterations are widely recognized as core symptoms of major depressive disorder and are associated with suicidal ideation. Thus, sleep and circadian rhythm alterations may be targeted to prevent suicide.Methods: Patients were recruited from a prospective cohort of the French network of TRD expert centers. Mood, sleep and circadian rhythms were assessed at baseline; suicidal risk was assessed both at baseline and during a one-year follow-up with standardized subjective questionnaires.Results: Excessive daytime sleepiness (adjusted odds ratio aOR = 1.7(1-3.3), p = 0.04) and daytime dysfunction (aOR = 1.81(1.16-2.81), p = 0.0085) increased the risk of suicidal thoughts over the one-year follow-up period in patients with TRD after adjustment on age, gender, depression, trauma, anxiety, impulsivity, current daily tobacco smoking and body mass index. Hypnotics intake is associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideation at one-year follow-up after the same adjustments (OR = 0.73(0.56-0.95), p = 0.019). Other associations between sleep quality or circadian rhythms and suicidal ideations at either baseline or one year did not remain significant in multivariate analyses after the same adjustments.Limitations: Sleep assessments were based on self-reported questionnaires rather than objective measures.Conclusions: Daytime sleepiness and dysfunction are predictors of suicidal ideations, whereas hypnotics intake is associated with a reduced risk of suicidal ideations. Diurnal symptoms of sleep disturbances are therefore red flags to target for preventing suicide in depressed patients, and hypnotics seem efficient in preventing suicide for patients with TRD.

Abstract: International audience; Current trends in the aerospace industry for the digitization of data, tools, and services call for novel solutions that can keep track of the latest technological advancements. Moreover, the increasing drive toward model-based approaches imposes the use of models for the development of complex systems, such as satellites. New types of methods and tools are needed in order to manage the still-growing complexity of embedded systems and their corresponding models. This paper addresses issues related to space systems (in-service) operations and proposes a multimodel approach to address them. The multimodel approach aims at facilitating the task of operational diagnosis by creating a monitoring and diagnosis-dedicated system model derived from existing system design (architecture, functional behavior, and safety) models. The purpose of the diagnosis-dedicated model is to enable the codesign of the system and its diagnosis tools in order to improve the performance of diagnosis activities and the system’s availability. This paper demonstrates the interests of the suggested approach with regard to the limitations of current practices.

Abstract: International audience; Objective: To establish international recommendations for the management of spastic equinovarus foot deformity. Design: Delphi method. Setting: International study. Participants: A total of 24 international experts (N=24) in neuro-orthopedic deformities, from different specialties (Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine physicians, neurologists, geriatricians, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, plastic surgeons). Interventions: Experts answered 3 rounds of questions related to important aspects of diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of spastic equinovarus foot deformity. Main Outcome Measures: A consensus was established when at least 80% of experts agreed on a statement Results: A total of 52 items reached consensus. Experts recommend assessing effect of the deformity on functional activities before treatment. Before treatment, it is crucial to differentiate spastic muscle overactivity from soft tissue contractures, identify which muscles are involved in the deformity, and evaluate the activity of antagonist muscles. Motor nerve blocks, 2-dimensional video analysis, and radiologic examinations are often required to complement a clinical examination. The treatment of equinovarus foot depends on the correctability of the deformity and the patient's ability to stand or walk. The preoperative assessment should include an interdisciplinary consultation that must finalize a formal agreement between physicians and the patient, which will define personalized attainable goals before surgery. Conclusion: The establishment of guidelines on managing equinovarus foot will help physicians and surgeons, specialists, and nonspecialists to diagnoses and assess the deformity and direct patients to a network of experts to optimize patient functional recovery and improve their autonomy.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we address the problem of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) image resolution enhancement by exploiting a newly introduced deep unrolled quantum denoiser, based on quantum interaction theory adapted to computational imaging. Following recent advances in image restoration using the Plug-and-Play (PnP) framework, we impose this external deep learning denoiser as a regularizer within the super-resolution (SR) problem. The quantum-based deep unrolled denoiser combined with a computationally efficient way to deal with the degradation operators, and the PnP scheme, result in an original way of approaching the image resolution enhancement problem. Experiments conducted on dental CBCT images are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed model for image resolution enhancement tasks. The numerical results suggest that the proposed method allows better restoration performances compared to existing state-of-the-art approaches.

Abstract: International audience; Because of the formation of specific antibodies to poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) leading to life-threatening side effects, there is an increasing need to develop alternatives to treatments and diagnostic methods based on PEGylated copolymers. Block copolymers comprising a poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) segment can be used for the design of such vectors without any PEG block. As an example, a poly(acrylic acid)-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PAA-b-PVP) copolymer with controlled composition and molar mass is synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Mixing this copolymer with lanthanide cations (Gd3+, Eu3+, Y3+) leads to the formation of hybrid polyion complexes with increased stability, preventing the lanthanide cytotoxicity and in vitro cell penetration. These new nanocarriers exhibit enhanced T1 MRI contrast, when intravenously administered into mice. No leaching of gadolinium ions is detected from such hybrid complexes.

Abstract: This article introduces new multiplicative updates for nonnegative matrix factorization with the $\beta$-divergence and sparse regularization of one of the two factors (say, the activation matrix). It is well known that the norm of the other factor (the dictionary matrix) needs to be controlled in order to avoid an ill-posed formulation. Standard practice consists in constraining the columns of the dictionary to have unit norm, which leads to a nontrivial optimization problem. Our approach leverages a reparametrization of the original problem into the optimization of an equivalent scale-invariant objective function. From there, we derive block-descent majorization-minimization algorithms that result in simple multiplicative updates for either $\ell_{1}$-regularization or the more "aggressive" log-regularization. In contrast with other state-of-the-art methods, our algorithms are universal in the sense that they can be applied to any $\beta$-divergence (i.e., any value of $\beta$) and that they come with convergence guarantees. We report numerical comparisons with existing heuristic and Lagrangian methods using various datasets: face images, an audio spectrogram, hyperspectral data, and song play counts. We show that our methods obtain solutions of similar quality at convergence (similar objective values) but with significantly reduced CPU times.

Abstract: Self-organisation is the spontaneous emergence of spatio-temporal structures and patterns from the interaction of smaller individual units. Examples are found across many scales in very different systems and scientific disciplines, from physics, materials science and robotics to biology, geophysics andastronomy. Recent research has highlighted how self-organisation can be both mediated and controlled by confinement. Confinement is an action over a system that limits its units’ translational and rotational degrees of freedom, thus also influencing the system’s phase space probability density; it can functionas either a catalyst or inhibitor of self-organisation. Confinement can then become a means to actively steer the emergence or suppression of collective phenomena in space and time. Here, to provide a common framework and perspective for future research, we examine the role of confinement in the self-organisation of soft-matter systems and identify overarching scientific challenges that need to be addressed to harness its full scientific and technological potential in soft matter and related fields.By drawing analogies with other disciplines, this framework will accelerate a common deeper understanding of self-organisation and trigger the development of innovative strategies to steer it using confinement, with impact on, e.g., the design of smarter materials, tissue engineering for biomedicineand in guiding active matter.

Abstract: International audience; The popularity of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is growing significantly, and so is the interest in gaining a better understanding of their functioning. In this work, it is even more interesting to reveal the behavior of these blackboxes since we are involved in a clinical context. To this end, we propose a general analytic framework, named Neuro-based Concept Detector (NCD), for interpreting deep representations of a DNN. Based on the activation patterns of the hidden neurons, this framework highlights the capacity of neurons to detect a specific concept related to the final task. The key strength of our framework is that it provides an interpretability tool for any type of DNN performing a classification task regardless of the application field. In this paper, we evaluate this framework on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) trained for the task of French phone classification. This choice was guided by the final objective of a long-term research project, which aims to identify the linguistic units best contributing to the maintenance or loss of intelligibility in the context of speech disorders. Through NCD, we demonstrate the emergence of phonetic features in the classification layers of the CNN-based model, while applied on healthy speech, a concept with a great interest in the field of clinical phonetics. Indeed, we further show that these interesting findings shed light on the characteristics of speech disorders in terms of altered phonetic features and provide relevant information for clinical practice, notably, patients' rehabilitation and follow-up.

Abstract: International audience; Animal-inspired mobile robots tend to show remarkable performance in outdoor locomotion and navigation tasks, but a big gap remains between robots and animals in terms of autonomy and endurance. Biomimicry is helping to solve numerous design issues through a better understanding of how animals move. Insect-inspired robots, in particular, can be built to interact with uneven terrains which are difficult to traverse for other robots, and bio-inspired robots designed to overcome the technological limitations of artificial systems are also valuable models for biologists in better understanding the behavior of animals. Therefore, exploring the limitations caused by mimicking insects of a few millimeters with robots measuring several centimeters becomes relevant. In this study, we first present two test benches used to investigate leg movement: one used to characterize that of an ant and the other that of a robotic leg. By comparing this multiscale data, we discuss the significance and relevance of these measurements in evaluating the robotic performance.

Abstract: International audience; Background: The association between omega-3 (ω-3) PUFAs and cognition, brain imaging and biomarkers is still not fully established.Objectives: The aim was to analyze the cross-sectional and retrospective longitudinal associations between erythrocyte ω-3 index and cognition, brain imaging, and biomarkers among older adults.Methods: A total of 832 Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 3 (ADNI-3) participants, with a mean (SD) age of 74.0 (7.9) y, 50.8% female, 55.9% cognitively normal, 32.7% with mild cognitive impairment, and 11.4% with Alzheimer disease (AD) were included. A low ω-3 index (%EPA + %DHA) was defined as the lowest quartile (≤3.70%). Cognitive tests [composite score, AD Assessment Scale Cognitive (ADAS-Cog), Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS), Trail Making Test, Category Fluency, Mini-Mental State Examination, Montreal Cognitive Assessment] and brain variables [hippocampal volume, white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), positron emission tomography (PET) amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau] were considered as outcomes in regression models.Results: Low ω-3 index was not associated with cognition, hippocampal, and WMH volume or brain Aβ and tau after adjustment for demographics, ApoEε4, cardiovascular disease, BMI, and total intracranial volume in the cross-sectional analysis. In the retrospective analysis, low ω-3 index was associated with greater Aβ accumulation (adjusted β = 0.02; 95% CI: 0.01, 0.03; P = 0.003). The composite cognitive score did not differ between groups; however, low ω-3 index was significantly associated with greater WMS-delayed recall cognitive decline (adjusted β = -1.18; 95% CI: -2.16, -0.19; P = 0.019), but unexpectedly lower total ADAS-Cog cognitive decline. Low ω-3 index was cross-sectionally associated with lower WMS performance (adjusted β = -1.81, SE = 0.73, P = 0.014) and higher tau accumulation among ApoE ε4 carriers.Conclusions: Longitudinally, low ω-3 index was associated with greater Aβ accumulation and WMS cognitive decline but unexpectedly with lower total ADAS-Cog cognitive decline. Although no associations were cross-sectionally found in the whole population, low ω-3 index was associated with lower WMS cognition and higher tau accumulation among ApoE ε4 carriers. Abstract: This work undertakes to combine the interests of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) and standard Finite Element Methods (FEM) for the global/local simulation of structures. The idea is to adopt a hybrid global-IGA/local-FEM modeling, thereby benefiting from: (i) the superior geometric description and per-Degree-Of-Freedom accuracy of IGA for capturing global, regular responses, and (ii) the ability of FEM to compute local, strongly non-linear or even singular behaviors. For the sake of minimizing the implementation effort, we develop a coupling scheme that is fully non-invasive in the sense that the initial global spline model to be enriched is never modified and the construction of the coupling operators can be performed using conventional FE packages. The key ingredient is to express the FEM-to-IGA bridge, based on B{\'e}zier extraction, to transform the initial global spline interface into a FE one on which the local FE mesh can be constructed. This allows to resort to classic FE trace operators to implement the coupling. It results in a strategy that offers the opportunity to simply couple an isogeometric code with any robust FE code suitable for the modelling of complex local behaviors. The method also easily extends in case the users only have at their disposal FE codes. This is the situation that is considered for the numerical illustrations. Abstract: International audience; Lock-in and path-dependency are well-known concepts in economics dealing with unbalanced development of alternative options. Lock-in was studied in various sectors, considering production or consumption sides. Lock-in in academic research went little addressed. Yet, science develops through knowledge accumulation and cross-fertilisation of research topics, that could lead to similar phenomena when some topics do not sufficiently benefit from accumulation mechanisms, reducing innovation opportunities from the concerned field consequently. We introduce an original method to explore these phenomena by comparing topic trajectories in research fields according to strong or weak accumulative processes over time. We combine the concepts of ‘niche’ and ‘mainstream’ from transition studies with scientometric tools to revisit Callon’s strategic diagram with a diachronic perspective of topic clusters over time. Considering the trajectories of semantic clusters, derived from titles and authors’ keywords extracted from scholarly publications in the Web of Science, we applied our method to two competing research fields in food sciences and technology related to pulses and soya over the last 60 years worldwide. These highly interesting species for the sustainability of agrifood systems experienced unbalanced development and thus is under-debated. Our analysis confirms that food research for soya was more dynamic than for pulses: soya topic clusters revealed a stronger accumulative research path by cumulating mainstream positions while pulses research did not meet the same success. This attempt to unpack research lock-in for evaluating the competition dynamics of scientific fields over time calls for future works, by strengthening the method and testing it on other research fields.

Abstract: International audience; Background and purpose - A clinical risk score for sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy could help improve prevention. Methods - A case-control study was conducted including (i) definite or probable SUDEP cases collected by the French National Sentinel Mortality Epilepsy Network and (ii) control patients from the French national research database of epilepsy monitoring units. Abstract: International audience; Plug-and-Play (PnP) methods are a class of iterative algorithms for inverse problems solving in which regularization is provided by a generic denoiser. Although producing very good results, these PnP optimization methods produce only point estimators and not a complete characterization of the posterior distribution. We propose a new family of stochastic PnP methods by exploiting a Gibbs sampling algorithm coupled with a generative neural network. In addition to a point estimator, the proposed approach provides confidence intervals for a moderate computational cost. The efficiency of the proposed samplers is evaluated through simulations of image reconstruction problems. The performances of the proposed estimators compare favorably with those of the most recent optimization and MCMC algorithms.; Les méthodes Plug-and-Play (PnP) forment une classe d'algorithmes itératifs pour la résolution de problèmes inverses dans lesquels la régularisation est assurée par le recours à un débruiteur générique. Bien que produisant de très bons résultats, ces méthodes d'optimisation PnP ne produisent souvent que des estimateurs ponctuels et non une caractérisation complète de la distribution a posteriori. Abstract: International audience; The identification of a set of parameters x from observed data y is often reduced to the resolution of a problem of the type f(x) = y, where f is a continuous application. This equation appears in domains such as (blind) inverse problems, data assimilation, or optimal control. When the solution is not unique, it may be important to inform the user about the set of plausible solutions. We propose here an algorithm to locally describe a set of solutions of this equation. It is essentially based on automatic differentiation and on a local parameterization of the solution manifold. We illustrate the interest of this approach on two toy examples.; L'identification d'un ensemble de paramètres x à partir de données observées y est souvent réduite à la résolution d'un problème du type f(x) = y, où f est une application continue. Cette équation apparaît dans des domaines tels que les problèmes inverses (aveugles), l'assimilation de données ou encore le contrôle optimal. Lorsque la solution n'est pas unique, il peut être important d'en informer l'utilisateur et de le renseigner sur l'ensemble des solutions plausibles. Abstract: International audience; The Coq Community Survey 2022 was an online public survey of users of the Coq proof assistant conducted during February 2022. Broadly, the survey asked about use of Coq features, user interfaces, libraries, plugins, and tools, views on renaming Coq and Coq improvements, and also demographic data such as education and experience with Coq and other proof assistants and programming languages. The survey received 466 submitted responses, making it the largest survey of users of an interactive theorem prover (ITP) so far. We present the design of the survey, a summary of key results, and analysis of answers relevant to ITP technology development and usage. In particular, we analyze user characteristics associated with adoption of tools and libraries and make comparisons to adjacent software communities. Notably, we find that experience has significant impact on Coq user behavior, including on usage of tools, libraries, and integrated development environments.

Abstract: National audience; This article is the first step of a complex process of measuring fine particle concentrations by spectral cameras. To do this, an accurate and fast classification of all pixels from a hyperspectral image is crucial to determine the nature of the objects and their optical properties. The methods traditionally used rely on the richness of the spectral information in measurements with hundreds of wavelengths. However, neglecting the spatial dimension during the classification can lead to situations where the resulting classes may not be spatially consistent. Here, we propose a classification method (Spatial Spectral Optimised Classification) based on learning, which takes into account spectral features but also spatial information via neighbouring pixels.; Cet article est la première étape d'un processus complexe de mesure de la concentration de particules fines par des caméras spectrales. Pour ce faire, une classification précise et rapide de tous les pixels d'une image hyperspectrale est cruciale pour déterminer la nature des objets et leurs propriétés optiques. Les méthodes traditionnellement utilisées reposent sur la richesse de l'information spectrale avec des centaines de longueurs d'onde habituellement mesurées par les caméras. Cependant, négliger la dimension spatiale durant une classification conduit à certaines situations où les classes obtenues ne sont pas spatialement cohérentes. Nous proposons ici une méthode de classification optimisée pour la mesure de la qualité de l'air (Spatial Spectral Optimised Classification) basée sur l'apprentissage, qui prend en compte les caractéristiques spectrales mais aussi l'information spatiale via les pixels voisins.

Abstract: International audience; Finite-Element Digital Image Correlation (FE-DIC) now appears highly relevant in the experimental mechanics community thanks to its direct bridge with simulation. However, using the fine FE mesh generated for accurate simulation inevitably requires the proper regularization of the inverse DIC problem. Here, Truncated Hierarchical B-Splines (THBS) are considered in a Free-Form-Deformation DIC approach to regularize FE-DIC in a strong, non-invasive, and adaptive manner. The idea is to embed the fine FE mesh in a THBS box whose unstructured refinement is automatically performed during the process to arrive at an optimal number of Degrees Of Freedom (DOF) for the solution. The FE DOF are related to the THBS DOF so that we end up with a regularized but conventional FE measured field which can be computed from a standard FE-DIC code. The method is also extended to cover stereo-DIC applications.

Abstract: International audience; Measuring displacement and strain fields at low observable scales of complex microstructures such as cellular materials still remains a challenge in experimental mechanics, often because of images with low definition and poor texture at this scale. Here, we develop a Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) method that allows to measure the deformation of the cell-struts of a cellular material undergoing crushing. It consists of a DIC method assisted with a physically sound weak regularization using an elastic finite-element image-based model at the architecture scale. With this technique, the non-linear response at the architecture scale, in particular local buckling, of a polyurethane foam under compression, is properly described.

Abstract: In this article, the historical study from Carathéodory-Zermelo about computing the quickest nautical path is generalized to Zermelo navigation problems on surfaces of revolution, in the frame of geometric optimal control. Using the Maximum Principle, we present two methods dedicated to analyze the geodesic flow and to compute the conjugate and cut loci. We apply these calculations to investigate case studies related to applications in hydrodynamics, space mechanics and geometry., Dans cet article, on généralise l’étude historique de Carathéodory-Zermelo sur le calcul du chemin nautique le plus rapide, aux problèmes de navigation de Zermelo sur des surfaces de révolution dans le cadre du contrôle optimal géométrique. En utilisant le Principe du Maximum, on présente deux méthodes permettant d’analyser le flot géodésique et de calculer les lieux conjugués et de coupure en lien avec l’optimalité locale et globale des trajectoires. Ces calculs sont ensuite appliqués à des cas d’études liés à des applications en hydrodynamique, en mécanique spatiale et en géométrie.

Abstract: Publication prévue lors d'une conférence de l'Association for Computing Machinery (ACM); Explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) aims to help human decision-makers in understanding complex machine learning (ML) models. One of the hallmarks of XAI are measures of relative feature importance, which are theoretically justified through the use of Shapley values. This paper builds on recent work and offers a simple argument for why Shapley values can provide misleading measures of relative feature importance, by assigning more importance to features that are irrelevant for a prediction, and assigning less importance to features that are relevant for a prediction. The significance of these results is that they effectively challenge the many proposed uses of measures of relative feature importance in a fast-growing range of high-stakes application domains. Abstract: International audience; Pollinators, such as bees, develop flexible memories of colors, patterns, and shapes, for efficient flower recognition. Here we tested whether other flower-foraging insects have evolved similar cognitive abilities underpinning flexible visual learning. We trained wild hornets from two species commonly found in Europe, the invasive yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina nigrithorax) and the European hornet (Vespa crabro), to associate sucrose solution rewards to color stimuli in a Y-maze. Hornets from both species succeeded in differential and reversal learning and developed short-term memories of the learnt associations. Thus, just like bees, hornets can learn various visual cue-reward associations and remember them for at least 1 h for selecting flowers. Our study in non-model species illustrates how standard conditioning approaches can be used to explore and compare the cognitive abilities of animals sharing similar foraging ecologies. Significance statement Bees can learn an impressive diversity of visual cues to recognize the best rewarding flowers. This can be studied using Y-maze in which individual insects must learn to associate visual stimuli to the presence or absence of nectar rewards. Here, using the same approach, we show that hornets are also capable of these associations. We compared the learning abilities of hornets from two common species in Europe and found that they could similarly learn to discriminate two colors and keep this information in memory for at least 1 h. Hornets thus evolved visual cognition facilitating robust flower foraging, like bees and many other pollinators.

Abstract: International audience; This article presents a model for income distribution among factors of production in the context of a globalised economy. Previous models are most often static and do not take into account the geographical location of the factors of production nor the mobility costs that result. We have created a dynamic Nash bargaining model that integratesthe geographical distance between companies and the mobility costs for each production factor. The main result of this model is that income distribution closely depends on mobility costs: production factors with low mobility costs are those whose incomes increase most rapidly.

Abstract: International audience; Additive Manufacturing (AM) and especially its metal variants constitute today a reality for the fabrication of high-performance industrial components. In particular, AM allows the construction of novel cellular structures, the so-called lattices, where well-designed unit cells are periodically repeated over a macro-shape to achieve exceptional specific performances, such as unprecedent stiffness-toweight ratios. These structures, however, are very difficult to simulate numerically: on the one hand, the application of multiscale methods based on homogenization appears delicate due to an insufficient separation of scales (macro versus cell scales); on the other hand, solving directly the high-fidelity, fine-scale problem requires handling large numbers of complex cells which is often intractable if standard methods are blindly used. As a solution, immersed domain techniques have been applied, but such methods, generic in terms of applications, may not be optimal in the case of lattices.In this context, the purpose of this work is to develop a HPC algorithm dedicated to lattices that takes advantage of the geometric proximity of the different cells in the numerical solution. In order to do so, we start by adopting the CAD paradigm based on spline composition along with its corresponding IGA framework. This offers (i) great flexibility to design any lattice geometry and (ii) fast multiscale assembly of the IGA system by means of look-up tables associated to the cell patterns and macro-fields encoding the behavior of the macro-shape. Then, we resort to the family of Domain Decomposition solvers, and develop an inexact FETI based algorithm that avoids solving numerous local cell-wise systems. More precisely, we extract the “principal” local cell stiffnesses using a greedy approach carried out on the macro-fields, and use the latter as a reduced basis to efficiently solve all the cell- wise systems. It results in a scalable algorithm that tends to be matrix-free. During the talk, a range of numerical examples in 2D and 3D will be presented to account for the efficiency of our method both in terms of memory and computational cost reduction.

Abstract: International audience; With the development of volume imaging techniques, mechanical models of a material at the microstructure scale can be created from 3D images of a sample. However, the computation of the image-based models still seems unattainable for real mechanical applications. Indeed, these models are associated with massive data and need to incorporate complex constitutive behaviours. The aim of this work is to develop an efficient numerical approach for the computation of solids with multiple non-linear, non-conforming interfaces (contact or delamination). In particular, the simulation of fibre-reinforced composite materials is of interest.To tackle the geometrical complexity of such multiphase objects, IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) is used together with immersed boundary approaches. This allows to avoid the delicate meshing phase of such geometrically complex objects and to obtain a better per-degree-of-freedom accuracy through the use of the spline smooth basis functions. Since the non-linearities are located at the interfaces, our purpose is to also take advantage of the so-called Large Time Increment (LaTIn) method. Here, the LaTIn method separates the non-linear local (i.e. related to the interfaces) and the global linear (i.e. related to the bulk) equations and applies an iterative scheme between both. LaTin-based solvers have recently been applied, for instance, with a FE immersed approach (CutFEM), to model multiple contacts. The present work extends the LaTIn to higher-order immersed IGA. The non-conforming coupling is treated by means of Nitsche’s approach which has shown optimal convergence behaviour, in particular for global/local analysis.In the proposed method, two conformal layers are built on the matrix/fibre interface, thus separating the difficulties regarding non-linearity and non-conformity. The layers are coupled by the LaTIn method, taking into account the non-linear behaviour. Then, they are coupled through Nitsche’s method with the geometrically simple non-conforming matrix or fibre models. In the case of multiple inclusions, the algorithm is naturally parallel. The proposed method has been tested through a series of numerical examples, including multiple unilateral and frictional contacts. Examples with cohesive interfaces will also be presented.

Abstract: State-of-the-art approaches for training Differentially Private (DP) Deep Neural Networks (DNN) faces difficulties to estimate tight bounds on the sensitivity of the network's layers, and instead rely on a process of per-sample gradient clipping. This clipping process not only biases the direction of gradients but also proves costly both in memory consumption and in computation. To provide sensitivity bounds and bypass the drawbacks of the clipping process, our theoretical analysis of Lipschitz constrained networks reveals an unexplored link between the Lipschitz constant with respect to their input and the one with respect to their parameters. By bounding the Lipschitz constant of each layer with respect to its parameters we guarantee DP training of these networks. This analysis not only allows the computation of the aforementioned sensitivities at scale but also provides leads on to how maximize the gradient-to-noise ratio for fixed privacy guarantees. To facilitate the application of Lipschitz networks and foster robust and certifiable learning under privacy guarantees, we provide a Python package that implements building blocks allowing the construction and private training of such networks., Comment: 39 pages, preprint

Abstract: Les systèmes d’information numériques (SIN) sont omniprésents dans tous les types d’organisations. Ils influencent en profondeur, et à long terme, le fonctionnement des organisations et la vie de leurs membres. Le dialogue autour de ces outils est nécessaire dans l’organisation. Ce texte porte sur un outil d’aide à ce dialogue. Il expose une méthode structurée, ISIDOR, construite par l’atelier de recherche SI2D, pour analyser et évaluer précisément l’impact d’un SIN sur la démocratie dans l’organisation. Une expérimentation de la méthode dans une organisation, réalisée dans le cadre d'un projet soutenu par l'ANACT, est ensuite présentée. Un bilan des points forts et des faiblesses de la méthode est établi.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction:While several meta-analyses have demonstrated the relevance of BCIs for improving motor recovery after stroke, these technologies are still barely used in clinical practice. We hypothesise that optimising the acceptability of BCIs could be used as a lever to increase the efficacy of BCI-based motor rehabilitation procedures, and thereby their clinical use. Indeed, a better acceptability will enable a reduction of anxiety levels and an enhancement of motivation and engagement in the procedure. Both will in turn allow for more cognitive resources to be allocated to the task, thus favouring learning and, ultimately, motor recovery. To the best of our knowledge, so far only one study has assessed the relevance of a BCI-based stroke rehabilitation procedure using acceptability measures among their primary criteria of efficacy. Most often, acceptability is only considered as an attribute of user satisfaction, itself being a dimension of user experience. Yet, given its potential impact on BCI use, it seems important to study acceptability as an integral component. Thus, our objective is to rely on validated models depicted in other literature in order to design a first thorough model of acceptability specifically dedicated to BCI-based procedures for motor rehabilitation after stroke. Material, Methods and Results: We designed a model of BCI acceptability based on the technology acceptance model 3 (TAM3) and on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2) that assess acceptability in terms of perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEOU) and behavioural intention (BI). Then, we created a questionnaire based on our model in order to estimate its validity and to quantify the influence that each factor had on BCIacceptability. We collected a data sample of 753 respondents representative of the general public in France. We targeted the general public for two main reasons. (i) Due to the high prevalence of stroke, many of us are concerned, more or less directly, by stroke. (ii) Patients’ acceptability is likely to be influenced by the opinions and attitudes of their close relatives (who are part of the general public). Descriptive analyses: Our results suggest that BCIs are associated with high levels of acceptability: PU (8.28/10 ±1.57), PEOU (7.17/10 ±1.57), BI (8.23/10 ±1.69). Validity analyses: Cronbach’s α coefficient analyses revealed a satisfactory internal consistency of our questionnaire, i.e., the items used to measure each factor are mostly consistent and not too redundant (12/17 factors in [0.72;0.95], 4/17 in [0.50;0.62] and 1 = 0.97). Furthermore, a confirmatory factor analysis showed that the structure of the model is adequate. Quantification analyses: Regression analyses based on random forest algorithm revealed that BI is mainly driven by the PU of the system and by the perceived benefits on risk ratio associated with the technology. PU itself is mainly determined by the scientific relevance of BCIs and by PEOU. The main determinants of PEOU are ease of learning and playfulness.Discussion: Our results suggest that beyond the subjective norm (i.e., perceived opinions of our close ones), several factors impact significantly BCI acceptability. Given the weight of the scientific relevance and benefits/risk ratio, it is of utmost importance to clearly inform the population. In addition, the impact of playfulness and ease of learning should encourage us to adapt the rehabilitation procedures to each patient. Abstract: International audience; The ANR SO-DRIIHM project (October 2020 - March 2024) has two main objectives, firstly to promote open science within the multidisciplinary DRIIHM community, and secondly to co-design an ergonomic "open science gateway" platform. This presentation provides an overview of the tasks carried out for each work package:- WP1: a survey on data sharing practices, the support of OHM pilot projects (data management plans, data deposits, data paper...) and the search tool for open science resources called ORRSO. We have also contributed to the data policy roadmap for CNRS-INEE infrastructures.- WP2: identify services (search data and publications, deposit data through our platform, make FAIR data as possible, draft a data paper...), set up an IT team with additional funding and carry out IT developments, involve volunteer researchers and the data steward support team in codesigning the future platform.

Abstract: International audience; With the development of volume imaging techniques, mechanical models of a material at the microstructure scale can be created from 3D images of a sample. However, the computation of the image-based models still seems unattainable for real mechanical applications due to massive data and complex constitutive behaviours. The aim of this work is to develop an efficient numerical approach for the simulation of solids with multiple non-linear, non-conformal interfaces. Of special interest are fiber-reinforced composite materials, where local models of fibers are coupled with the global matrix model. Immersed boundary methods are used in the framework of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) to tackle the complex geometry of multi-phase objects, resulting in improved per-degree-of-freedom accuracy by using spline basis functions and alleviating meshing process. Since the non-linearities are located at the interfaces, we aim to take advantage of the Large Time Increment (LaTIn) method. Here, the LaTIn method separates the non-linear local and the global linear equations and applies an iterative scheme between both. LaTIn-based solvers have been applied, for instance, with a FE immersed approach (CutFEM), to model multiple contacts. The present work extends the LaTIn to higher-order immersed IGA. The non-conformal coupling is treated by Nitsche’s approach, which has shown optimal convergence behaviour, particularly for global/local analysis. In the proposed method, two conformal layers are built on the matrix/fibre interface, thus separating the difficulties regarding non-linearity and non-conformity. The LaTIn method is used to couple the layers, incorporating the non-linear behaviour, and Nitsche's method is then used to couple the layers with the geometrically simple, non-conformal matrix or fibre models. The method has been tested through multiple numerical examples, including unilateral and friction contacts, and examples with cohesive interfaces will also be presented.

Cet article propose une nouvelle approche qui relève ce défi, en se basant sur des modèles de langues pré-entraînés par enrichissement des définitions des types d'entités issus d'une base de connaissances. Les expériences menées dans le cadre de la tâche MultiCoNER I de SemEval ont montré que l'approche proposée permet d'atteindre des gains en performance par rapport aux modèles de référence de la tâche.

Abstract: International audience; The automatic prediction of speech intelligibility can be seen as a growing and relevant alternative to the perceptual evaluations used clinically, which are known to be biased, variant and subjective. We propose an automatic way to regress an intelligibility score based on a recurrent model with a self-attention mechanism. This approach not only presented a high correlation of 0.87 when applied to a pseudo-word task designed for head and neck cancers, but also a significant decrease in error of more than 50%, when compared to previous approaches. Moreover, we have also studied the reliability of the same system when operating with smaller amounts of data at inference time. The results suggest that we can reduce the linguistic sample size to only 30% of the full sample, without losing performance. This aspect validates the reliability of using a smaller subset of data when predicting intelligibility, which can be extremely useful to prevent patient's fatigue by creating smaller batteries of clinical exams.

Cet atelier s’est déroulé le 13 juin 2023 à Brest lors de la conférence Environnements Informatiques pour l’Apprentissage Humain (EIAH). Il a été organisé conjointement par le GT APIMU et le projet ANR IE-CARE. Il s’agit de la 6e occurrence d’une série d’ateliers qui se déroule traditionnellement durant la conférence EIAH ou les Rencontres Jeunes Chercheur·es en EIAH (RJC-EIAH). Pour cet atelier nous avons souhaité mettre l’accent sur la mise à l’épreuve des dispositifs et outils proposés : dispositifs expérimentaux, analyses qualitatives et quantitatives des outils et dispositifs mis en œuvre et leurs résultat.

Abstract: International audience; Self-regulated learning (SRL) is a crucial higher-order skill required by learners of the 21st century, who will need to become lifelong learners to adapt to the continually changing environments. Literature provides examples of tools for scaffolding SRL in online environments. In this study, we provide the state-of-the-art concerning tools that support SRL in terms of theoretical models underpinning development, supported SRL processes, tool functionalities, used data and visualizations. We reviewed 42 articles published between 2008 and 2020, including information from 25 tools designed to support SRL. Our findings indicate that (1) many of the studies do not explicitly specify the SRL theoretical model used to guide the design process of the tool; (2) goal setting, monitoring, and self-evaluation are the most prevalent SRL processes supported through functionalities such as content navigation, user input forms, collaboration features, and recommendations; (3) the relationship between tool functionalities and SRL processes are rarely described; (4) few tools assess the impact on learners' SRL process and learning performance. Finally, we highlight some lessons learned that might contribute to implementing future tools that support learners' SRL processes.

Abstract: Using localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) as an optical probe we demonstrate the presence of free carriers in phosphorus doped silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) embedded in a silica matrix. In small SiNCs, with radius ranging from 2.6 to 5.5 nm, the infrared spectroscopy study coupled to numerical simulations allows us to determine the number of electrically active phosphorus atoms with a precision of a few atoms. We demonstrate that LSP resonances can be supported with only about 10 free electrons per nanocrystal, confirming theoretical predictions and probing the limit of the collective nature of plasmons. We reveal the appearance of an avoided crossing behavior linked to the hybridization between the localized surface plasmon in the doped nanocrystals and the silica matrix phonon modes. Finally, a careful analysis of the scattering time dependence versus carrier density in the small size regime allows us to detect the appearance of a new scattering process at high dopant concentration, which can be explained by P clustering inside the SiNCs.

Abstract: International audience; Le projet ANR SO-DRIIHM (octobre 2020 – mars 2024) a deux grands objectifs dont le premier vise à la promotion de la science ouverte auprès de la communauté pluridisciplinaire du DRIIHM et le deuxième, le codesign d'une plateforme ergonomique "aiguilleur de la science ouverte". L'objectif de cette plateforme est de faciliter le dépôt, le partage de ressources et favoriser les coopérations en offrant de nouvelles solutions à la communauté de recherche interdisciplinaire (environnement et SHS) et à la communauté en soutien à la gestion des données.Cette plateforme se focalise sur la couche d'intermédiation des utilisateurs avec l'écosystème de la science ouverte. Nous travaillons notamment à définir et à développer les besoins et usages attendus pour la recherche et le dépôt de données en étroite collaboration avec la communauté intéressée. Au cœur du système se trouvent les métadonnées descriptives des ressources du DRIIHM alignées selon le standard DCAT du web de données et son profil DCAT-AP de l'union européenne. Nous utilisons également l'ontologie PROV-O pour le suivi du lignage des données. Nous poursuivons les développements selon notre feuille de route et appelons à contributions externes pour soutenir et enrichir cette plateforme open source.

Abstract: National audience; “Aging well at home” is a major concern of our modern society where technological innovation allows people to be more independent and to live in their place of life with a better level of security. However, in order to come up with adapted and effective solutions, it is necessary to take care of the design and evaluation of the proposed technologies. In this article, we detail the interest of the contribution of a structure such as a Smart Home in this process of design and evaluation by taking as an example the platform “Smart home of Blagnac”.; Le « Bien vieillir à son domicile » est une préoccupation majeure de notre société où l’innovation technologique permet aux personnes d’être plus autonomes et de vivre dans leur lieu de vie avec un meilleur niveau de sécurité. Cependant, pour parvenir à concevoir des solutions adaptées et efficaces, il est nécessaire de soigner la conception et l’évaluation des technologies proposées. Dans cet article, nous détaillons l’intérêt que présente l’apport d’une structure telle qu’un habitat intelligent dans ce processus de conception et d’évaluation en prenant comme exemple la plateforme « Maison Intelligente de Blagnac ».

Abstract: Multi-level methods are widely used for the solution of large-scale problems, because of their computational advantages and exploitation of the complementarity between the involved sub-problems. After a re-interpretation of multi-level methods from a block-coordinate point of view, we propose a multi-level algorithm for the solution of nonlinear optimization problems and analyze its evaluation complexity. We apply it to the solution of partial differential equations using physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) and show on a few test problems that the approach results in better solutions and significant computational savings.

Abstract: International audience; With the health problem, digital training has assumed a major role in our society. Some of the numerous online trainingopportunities are free, allowing the user to learn without having to pay, but occasionally we may question about the worth ofthese training opportunities—do they provide the same quality as the paid ones? Our two studies, which gathered informationfrom 245 and 114 individuals, demonstrates that a free course can have the same value and interest as a paid course and thatthe cost of an e-learning course does not always affect the value that the user attributes to it. We found that free training is animportant deciding factor because it provides the training with an advantage over the identical paid service that goes beyondsimple cost savings. As a result, free training may appear to the user to offer more overall benefits than expensive training.We also found that a price perceived as “a fair price” appear to the user as giving more benefits that an “expensive one”.

Abstract: International audience; The Gap safe screening technique is a powerful tool to accelerate the convergence of sparse optimization solvers. Its performance is largely based on the ability to determine the smallest ``sphere'', centered at a given feasible dual point, that contains the dual solution. This can be achieved through an inner sphere refinement loop, applied at each screening step. In this work, we show that this refinement loop actually converges to the solution of a fixed-point equation for which we derive a closed-form expression for two common loss functions. This allows us to develop an analytic (i.e., non iterative), more concise and theoretically-grounded variant of the sphere refinement step.

Abstract: International audience; Dense matrix multiplication involving a symmetric input matrix (SYMM) is implemented in reference distributed-memory codes with the same data distribution as its general analogue (GEMM). We show that, when the symmetric matrix is dominant, such a 2D block-cyclic (2D BC) scheme leads to a lower arithmetic intensity (AI) of SYMM than that of GEMM by a factor of 2. We propose alternative data distributions preserving the memory benefit of SYMM of storing only half of the matrix while achieving up to the same AI as GEMM. We also show that, in the case we can afford the same memory footprint as GEMM, SYMM can achieve a higher AI. We propose a task-based design of SYMM independent of the data distribution. This design allows for scalable A-stationary SYMM with which all discussed data distributions, may they be very irregular, can be easily assessed. We have integrated the resulting code in a reduction dimension algorithm involving a randomized singular value decomposition dominated by SYMM. An experimental study shows a compelling impact on performance.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction: Stroke leaves around 40% of surviving patients dependent in their activities, notably due to severe motor disabilities[1]. BCIs have been shown to favour motor recovery after stroke [2], but this efficiency has not reached yet the level required to achieve a clinical usage. We hypothesise that improving BCI acceptability, notably by personalising BCI-based rehabilitation procedures to each patient, will reduce anxiety and favour engagement in the rehabilitation process, thereby increasing the efficiency of those procedures. To test this hypothesis, we need to understand how to adapt BCI procedures to each patient depending on their profile. Thus, we constructed a model of BCI acceptability based on the literature [3], adapted it in a questionnaire, and distributed the latter to post-stroke patients (N=140). Methods: The questionnaire consisted of i) 3 target factors used as a proxy of BCI acceptability, namely the perceived usefulness (PU), perceived ease of use (PEoU) intention to use (IU) and ii) 23 explanatory factors that could influence acceptability. First, k-mean clustering analyses were performed to identify different profiles of patients. Then, for each cluster, elastic net regressions were used to identify the explanatory factors that predicted PU, PEoU and IU the best, i.e., to identify the factors that are the most important to personalise for each patient. Results: Five clusters (c1 to c5) were identified. The regression analyses indicated that the following factors had to be considered: (c1 & c5) "scientific relevance" & "ease of learning"; (c2) "benefits/risks ratio", "ease of learning", "visual aesthetic" & "result demonstrability"; (c3) "scientific relevance" & "benefits/risks ratio";(c4) none. Perspectives: We will use those results in a clinical study to personalise the BCI procedures to each patient. Abstract: Fluidic oscillators are no-moving-part actuators that can be used to produce pulsating jets. The characteristics of these devices and of the flow fields they produce are of particular interest in the field of heat transfer, as pulsating impinging jets have been shown to improve heat transfer compared to steady jets. In this study, special focus is given to these characteristics as a preparation for a subsequent thermal study that will evaluate the performance of these pulsed jets against steady jets. The functioning of the device in response to different operating and design parameters is first considered. It was shown that a transition between different operating modes is possible, depending on both the inlet mass flow rate and the width of the feedback channel of the device. This was followed by a study of the velocity fields of the pulsed jets produced by the device. More specifically, attention is given to the developing characteristics and flow structures of the pulsating free jets of air which are then compared to equivalent steady jets. Finally, by taking advantage of the periodic aspect of the flow, the phase-averaged velocity field was reconstructed. Vortex dipoles were detected, tracked and their convection velocity computed from the same data and compared to a theoretical value from the literature. A Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) of the synchronized raw data was then performed to further highlight the presence of these vortex structures and of other flow instabilities.
