Carrier confinement in InAs quantum dashes (QDas) grown on InP(001) is investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The aim of these studies is to reconstruct the electronic structure of the QDas. QDas with low size dispersion are achieved by improving growth conditions. Optical transitions between ground and excited states are studied by continuous-wave-photoluminescence and photoluminescence-excitation experiments at low temperature. We also report on infrared spectroscopy of conduction-band intersubband transitions. A simplified theoretical model is developed, yielding results consistent with the experimental data. Combining experimental and theoretical results, we propose an interpretation of the optical transitions occurring in these QDas, and we give a first theoretical absorption spectrum of these structures. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Micro-photoluminescence spectroscopy measurements have been performed on single self-organized InAs/InP quantum dashes, either on sub-micron mesas made on the sample surface or through sub-micron apertures realized in a gold mask deposited on the surface. The emission wavelength of the quantum dashes is centred around 1.5 µm at room temperature. The micro-photoluminescence measurements on sub-micron mesas, at low temperature and with low excitation power density, show PL spectra consisting of a few single sharp exciton lines with a rather large full width at half maximum (FWHM) in the 0.8–1.8 meV range, whereas peak broadening is found to be much smaller for the spectra recorded through the sub-micron apertures with an FWHM below 300 µeV. When the excitation power density is increased, new lines arise which are interpreted as emission coming from excited states of single InAs/InP quantum dashes and from bi-exciton recombination. We present a passive novel optical add-drop filter incorporating microdisk resonators, in complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor compatible silicon-on-insulator technology, which enables a simple layout of complex optical networks-on-chip. The measured properties of the fabricated devices are in agreement with theory, established using the time-domain coupled mode theory and finite-difference time-domain simulations. In this Letter, we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate the formation of a super bound state in a continuum (BIC) on a photonic crystal flat band. This unique state simultaneously exhibits an enhanced quality factor and near-zero group velocity across an extended region of the Brillouin zone. It is achieved at the topological transition when a symmetry-protected BIC pinned at k=0 merges with two Friedrich-Wintgen quasi-BICs, which arise from the destructive interference between lossy photonic modes of opposite symmetries. As a proof of concept, we employ the ultraflat super BIC to demonstrate three-dimensional optical trapping of individual particles. Our findings present a novel approach to engineering both the real and imaginary components of photonic states on a subwavelength scale for innovative optoelectronic devices.

We propose a new holographic interferometric technique of phase interrogation for nanophotonic sensors, allowing to reach low phase noise and fluctuation by using a digital micromirror device spatial light modulator. With the spatial light modulator, both beam shaping and phase shifting interferometry can be simultaneously managed, hence enabling the interrogation of nanophotonic devices with a common-path heterodyne Young's interference experiment. The efficiency of the technique is illustrated in the particular case of temperature sensing using Tamm plasmon photonic crystals. The hologram sensor allows to probe resonant structures with deep attenuation at resonance, such as resonant structures at critical coupling or with phase singularities.

Exceptional points (EPs), singularities of non-Hermitian physics where complex spectral resonances degenerate, are one of the most exotic features of nonequilibrium open systems with unique properties. For instance, the emission rate of quantum emitters placed near resonators with EPs is enhanced (compared to the free-space emission rate) by a factor that scales quadratically with the resonance quality factor. Here, we verify the theory of spontaneous emission at EPs by measuring photoluminescence from photonic-crystal slabs that are embedded with a high-quantum-yield active material. While our experimental results verify the theoretically predicted enhancement, they also highlight the practical limitations on the enhancement due to material loss. Our designed structures can be used in applications that require enhanced and controlled emission, such as quantum sensing and imaging.

In this paper, we present a simple approach to study the coupling mechanisms between a plasmonic system consisting of bowtie nanoantennas and a photonic structure based on a Fabry-Perot interferometer. The nanoantenna array is represented by an equivalent homogeneous layer placed at the interferometer surface and yielding the effective dielectric function of the NA resonance. A phase matching model based on thin film interference is developed to describe the multi-layer interferences in the device and to analyze the fringe variations induced by the introduction of the plasmonic layer. The general model is validated by an experimental system consisting of a bowtie nanoantenna array and a porous-silicon-based interferometer. The optical response of this hybrid device exhibits both the enhancement induced by the nanoantenna resonance and the fringe pattern of the interferometer. Using the phase matching model, we demonstrate that strong coupling can occur in such a system, leading to fringe splitting. A study of the splitting strength and of the coupling behavior is given. The model study performed in this work enables to gain deeper understanding of the optical behavior of plasmonic/photonic hybrid devices.

We numerically demonstrate a drastic enhancement of the light intensity in the vicinity of the gap of Bowtie Nano-antenna (BA) through its coupling with Photonic Crystal (PC) resonator. The resulting huge energy transfer toward the BA is based on the coupling between two optical resonators (BA and PC membrane) of strongly unbalanced quality factors. Thus, these two resonators are designed so that the PC is only slightly perturbed in term of resonance properties. The proposed hybrid dielectric-plasmonic structure may open new avenues in the generation of deeply subwavelength intense optical sources, with direct applications in various domains such as data storage, non-linear optics, optical trapping and manipulation, microscopy, etc.

We propose a novel system of dual-wavelength micro-cavity based on the coupling between a photonic crystal membrane (PCM); operating at the Γ- point of the Brillouin zone, with a Fabry-Perot vertical cavity (FP). The optical coupling, which can be adjusted by the overlap between both optical modes, leads to the generation of two hybrid modes separated by a frequency difference which can be tuned using micro-opto-electromechanical structures. The proposed dual-wavelength micro-cavity is attractive for application where dual-mode behaviour is desirable as dual-lasing, frequency conversion. An analytical model, numerical (FDTD) and transfer matrix method investigations are presented.

A new approach is proposed for the optimum addressing of a metallic nano-antenna (NA) with a free space optical beam. This approach relies on the use of an intermediate resonator structure that provides the appropriate modal conversion of the incoming beam. More precisely, the intermediate resonator consists in a Photonic Crystal (PC) membrane resonant structure that takes benefit of surface addressable slow Bloch modes. First, a phenomenological approach including a deep physical understanding of the NA-PC coupling and its optimization is presented. In a second step, the main features of this analysis are confirmed by numerical simulations (FDTD).

A scanning near-field optical microscopy study is undertaken on photonic crystal tapers. These tapers are used to couple a 3 microm wide multimode dielectric waveguide to a single-line defect monomode photonic crystal waveguide. Two kinds of taper, with or without a localized defect, are compared. Higher transmission efficiency is obtained when a defect is utilized. The near-field study at 1550 nm shows experimentally that this defect prevents leaky resonant states to appear in the taper and thus permits a decrease in out-of-plane losses. These observations are supported by band diagram calculations.

We report the scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) characterization of a 4 x 4 multimode interference (MMI) device working at a wavelength of 1.55 microm and designed for astronomical signal recombination. A comprehensive analysis of the mapped propagating field is presented. We compare SNOM measurements with beam-propagation-method simulations and thus are able to determine the MMI structure's refractive-index contrast and show that the measured value is higher than the expected value. Further investigation allows us to demonstrate that good care must be taken with the refractive-index profile used in simulation when one deals with low-index contrast structures. We show evidence that a step-index contrast is not suitable for adequate simulation of our structure and present a model that permits good agreement between measured and simulated propagating fields.
