Abstract: International audience; During the last decade, many approaches for resolved-particle simulation (RPS) have been developed for numerical studies of finite size particle-laden turbulent flows. In this paper, three RPS approaches are compared for a particle-laden decaying turbulence case. These methods are, the Volume-of-Fluid Lagrangian method, based on the viscosity penalty method (VoF-Lag); a direct forcing Immersed Boundary Method, based on a regularized delta-function approach for the fluid/solid coupling (IBM); and the Bounce Back scheme developed for Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM-BB). The physics and the numerical performances of the methods are analyzed. Modulation of turbulence is observed for all the methods, with a faster decay of turbulent kinetic energy compared to the single-phase case. Lagrangian particle statistics, such as the velocity probability density function and the velocity autocorrelation function, show minor differences among the three methods. However, major differences between the codes are observed in the evolution of the particle kinetic energy. These differences are related to the treatment of the initial condition when the particles are inserted in an initially single-phase turbulence. The averaged particle/fluid slip velocity is also analyzed, showing similar behavior as compared to the results referred in the literature. The computational performances of the different methods differ significantly. The VoF-Lag method appears to be computationally most expensive. Indeed, this method is not adapted to turbulent cases. The IBM and LBM-BB implementations show very good scaling.

Abstract: In this paper, a new near-field source localisation method based on signal reconstruction and clustering approach is proposed. The new method makes full use of the advantages of signal reconstruction, reconstructs the parameters related to the direction of arrival (DOA) and range of sources in cumulant domain separately, and pairs them with clustering technique. This would lead to higher resolution and better accuracy than traditional methods. By estimating the parameters separately, the authors avoid constructing a huge overcomplete basis, and reduce the computational burden. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: In modern wireless communication system, power amplifier (PA) is an important component which is expected to be operated at the region of high power efficiency, but in this region, PA is inherently nonlinear. Thus, the linearization of high power efficient PA is necessary. In this paper, direct learning architecture (DLA) and indirect learning architecture (ILA) are firstly compared. It shows that DLA is more robust than ILA. Then a baseband digital predistortion (DPD) method with DLA is proposed for power amplifier linearization based on combined look-up tables (LUT) and memory polynomial (MP) model. The main innovation is that a LUT-based approach is proposed to calculate directly the complex-valued predistorted signal. Moreover, some interpolation techniques are introduced to reduce the LUT size. The proposed DPDs are validated experimentally. Additionally, the influences of some important parameters in experimental setup, such as the number of bits of analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and the instrument bandwidth, are analyzed.

Abstract: SUMMARY Eikonal tomography has become a key approach to image lithospheric structures with surface waves recorded by dense regional arrays. Its main advantage is that phase velocities can be determined directly from phase measurements without resolving a tomographic inverse problem. Here, we apply a new smoothing spline eikonal tomography approach to a selection of 40 large (Mw larger than 6.5) teleseismic events recorded by the permanent seismic stations of the CEArray. We first apply a time–frequency filter to isolate the fundamental mode of Rayleigh waves and cross-correlate the cleaned and isolated surface wave records to measure precise relative traveltimes. The phase measurements are then unwrapped and corrected for cycle skipping. Finally, we derive phase-velocity maps from the gradient of the reconstructed traveltime fields, using the eikonal equation. We obtain finely resolved phase-velocity maps from 25 to 150 s period that are inverted to obtain a 3-D shear wave velocity model which is in good agreement with previous tomographic studies. The lithospheric architecture emerging from the phase-velocity maps and 3-D S-wave velocities correlates with surface geology and major tectonic provinces. In particular, the architecture of the narrow rift systems, the South China Craton, and the North China Craton (NCC) are revealed with unprecedented details. The South China Craton is characterized by very high velocities beneath the Sichuan Basin. The NCC shows more complex structures with two high-velocity anomalies beneath the Ordos Basin and the southeastern NCC and low-velocity anomalies beneath the Cenozoic rift systems.

Abstract: Croplands play a critical role in regulating terrestrial water and carbon cycles and provide essential social services for humans. Investigating the characteristics of water and carbon flux in cropland ecosystems offers valuable information for advancing sustainable agriculture management. Combining the up-to-date Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and cropland distribution data, this study quantified the temporal-spatial variations of evapotranspiration (ET), gross primary productivity (GPP), and ecosystem-scale water use efficiency (WUE) in paddy (PF) and non-paddy field (NPF) over China from 2000 to 2021. The results showed that annual ET in both PF and NPF presented an increasing trend from northwest to southeast of China, with mean annual ET totaling 625 ± 43 mm yr − 1 and 487 ± 45 mm yr − 1 in PF and NPF, respectively. The Sen's slope showed that annual ET presented significantly increasing trends (p < 0.01), with a rate of 66.7 +10.9 − 12.2 mm yr − 1 decade − 1 in NPF and 59.8 +16.6 − 14.9 mm yr − 1 decade − 1 in PF. The magnitudes of the increase in annual ET mainly came from the ET increase in summer, with the quantified contribution rates of 38.4 % in PF and 50.74 % in NPF. The spatial variations of cropland annual GPP agreed well with that of annual ET. The mean annual GPP in PF and NPF was estimated at 1029 ± 57 gC m − 2 yr − 1 and 776 ± 67 gC m − 2 yr − 1 from 2000 to 2021, respectively, along with its significantly increasing trend at 84.0 +15.9 − 14.2 gC m − 2 decade − 1 and 96.3 +14.2 − 9.7 gC m − 2 decade − 1 (p < 0.01) in PF and NPF during this period, respectively. The increase in spring GPP mainly contributed to the increasing annual GPP in PF. In contrast, the rising GPP in spring and summer primarily resulted in the increasing annual GPP in NPF. The mean annual WUE is 1.65 ± 0.05 gC m − 2 kg − 1 H 2 O in PF and 1.59 ± 0.03 gC m − 2 kg − 1 H 2 O in NPF, respectively. The investigations of the variations of WUE demonstrated that both PF and NPF experienced negative trends in China, but the trends were not uniform, and disparities existed across the sub-agricultural districts. The quantified spatial and temporal patterns of how croplands trade water for carbon will help better manage agricultural water resources and ensure food security.

Abstract: This paper investigates the widely linear processing (WLP) for the detection of circular signals, such as M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) signals and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) signals. First, a unified mathematical model is derived to describe the conjugate symmetry of general MPSK/MQAM signals. In the unified model, a phase-rotation matrix (PRM) is introduced to partition the constellation of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signals into subsets. Signals in a subset share the same PRM. Second, a widely linear receiver is proposed in each subset for MIMO detection. To avoid repetitive WLP in each subset, a widely linear sphere decoder (WLSD) is further proposed for MIMO systems. WLSD transforms the traditional sphere decoder (SD) searching for a true transmitted vector into a shrunk one by searching for the corresponding phase-rotation vector. Finally, the diversity order of WLSD is proven to be more than $N_R-\frac{N_T-1}{2}$ and less than $N_R$ , where $N_T$ (or $N_R$ ) denotes the number of transmitting (or receiving) antennas. Additional performance analysis is also conducted to quantify the signal-to-noise ratio improvement. The complexity analysis reveals that the candidate phase-rotation vectors of WLSD are no more than $(\frac{1}{2})^{N_T}$ of the SD candidates. Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a novel RSU (road side unit) coordinated Multi-channel MAC (medium access control) for VANETs (Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks), namely, RC-MCMAC. The RC-MCMAC allows OBU (on broad unit) to rendezvous on the CCH channel during the whole synchronization intervals and supports simultaneous transmissions on different SCH channels. Moreover, we use RSU to record the rendezvous information. It avoids multi-channel hidden terminal problem. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, we do simulations and compare the system performance of the RC-MCMAC scheme with that of the IEEE 1609.4 and VEMMAC (Vehicular Enhanced Multi-channel MAC protocol). Simulation results demonstrate that the RC-MCMAC outperforms both of the aforementioned schemes in terms of system throughput on SCH channels, especially in high network load conditions.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we demonstrate the existence of topological states in a new collective dynamics model. This individual-based model (IBM) describes self-propelled rigid bodies moving with constant speed and adjusting their rigid-body attitude to that of their neighbors. In previous works, a macroscopic model has been derived from this IBM in a suitable scaling limit. In the present work, we exhibit explicit solutions of the macroscopic model characterized by a non-trivial topology. We show that these solutions are well approximated by the IBM during a certain time but then the IBM transitions towards topologically trivial states. Using a set of appropriately defined topological indicators, we reveal that the breakage of the non-trivial topology requires the system to go through a phase of maximal disorder. We also show that similar but topologically trivial initial conditions result in markedly different dynamics, suggesting that topology plays a key role in the dynamics of this system.

Abstract: International audience; Widely linear processing (WLP) can provide attractive performance improvement in wireless communication systems. However, performance improvement brought by WLP is mainly achieved by exploiting signal's non-circularity, which leads to the fact that existing works on WLP are mainly confined to the cases related to non circular signals or improper signals with imbalanced I/Q components. In this paper, WLP for circular signals, such as PSK signals, is investigated by exploiting the hidden properties of PSK signals. The hidden properties of PSK signals are firstly studied, and a unified mathematical model is derived to describe the hidden properties of PSK signals. Furthermore, a widely linear sphere decoding (WLSD) algorithm exploiting PSK signals' hidden properties is proposed for MIMO systems. Compared to traditional sphere decoding (SD), WLSD has little performance loss, and it transforms the traditional SD searching for the true transmitted vector into the shrunk searching for the corresponding rotation vector, the candidate rotation vectors of WLSD are only ( 1 2 )NT of SD candidate vectors. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve quasi-optimal BER performance, while the computational complexity is significantly reduced by more than a half compared with Schnorr-Euchner sphere decoder.

Abstract: In this contribution, we illustrate uranium complexes bearing a pendant borate (i.e. 1 and 2) or a pendant borane (i.e. 3 and 4) moiety via reaction of the highly strained uranacycle I with various 3-coordinate boranes. Complexes 3 and 4 represent the first examples of uranium complexes with a pendant borane Lewis acid. Moreover, complex 3 was capable of activation of CO, delivering a new CO activation mode, and an abnormal CO 1,2-insertion pathway into a U-N bond. The importance of the pendant borane moiety was confirmed by the controlled experiments.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, an adaptive expansion strategy (AES) is proposed for multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) detection in the presence of circular signals. By exploiting channel properties, the AES classifies MIMO channels into three types: excellent, average and deep fading. To avoid unnecessary branch-searching, the AES adopts single expansion (SE), partial expansion (PE) and full expansion (FE) for excellent channels, average channels and deep fading channels, respectively. In the PE, the non-circularity of signal is exploited, and the widely linear processing is extended from non-circular signals to circular signals by I (or Q) component cancellation. An analytical performance analysis is given to quantify the performance improvement. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve quasi-optimal performance with much less complexity (hundreds of flops/symbol are saved) compared with the fixedcomplexity sphere decoder (FSD) and the sphere decoder (SD).

Abstract: A new rhodamine-like alkyne-substituted ligand (Rhodyne) was designed to coordinate a cyclometallated platinum(ii) system. The chemo-induced “ON–OFF” switching capabilities on the spirolactone ring of the Rhodyne ligand with an end-capping platinum(ii) metal centre can modulate the interesting acetylide–allenylidene resonance. The long-lived 3IL excited state of Rhodyne in its ON state as an optically active opened form was revealed via steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy studies. Exceptional near-infrared (NIR) phosphorescence and delayed fluorescence based on a rhodamine-like structure were observed at room temperature for the first time. The position of the alkyne communication bridge attached to the platinum(ii) unit was found to vary the lead(ii)-ion binding mode and also the possible resonance structure for metal-mediated allenylidene formation. The formation of a proposed allenylidene resonance structure was suggested to rationalize these phenomena., A new rhodamine-like ligand (Rhodyne) was designed to coordinate a cyclometallated platinum(ii) system. Allenylidene formation could trigger NIR phosphorescence at 740 nm originating from Rhodyne 3IL, as well as delayed fluorescence at 620 nm.

Abstract: International audience; Homeotropic alignment of liquid crystals (LCs) is one of the key modes used in commercial liquid crystal displays (LCDs) due to its advantages, such as high contrast ratios and fast response speed. Here, we report stable homeotropic LC alignment with a small pretilt angle in a nematic, negative LC host doped with additives including self-aligning agents, photoresponsive azo dyes, and reactive mesogen via an in situ self-assembled, dual-wavelength photoalignment approach. The underlying mechanism of stable, pretilted homeotropic LC alignment was further analyzed in detail. The achieved pretilted homeotropic LC cells are very stable against heat and UV light exposure and demonstrate excellent electro-optical characteristics. The experimental results show that such a noncontact, simple homeotropic alignment technique has big potential in many applications, such as high-quality LCDs, spatial light modulators, and other optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: SARS-CoV-2 infection of human cells is initiated by the binding of the viral Spike protein to its cell-surface receptor ACE2. We conducted a targeted CRISPRi screen to uncover druggable pathways controlling Spike protein binding to human cells. We found that the protein BRD2 is required for ACE2 transcription in human lung epithelial cells and cardiomyocytes, and BRD2 inhibitors currently evaluated in clinical trials potently block endogenous ACE2 expression and SARS-CoV-2 infection of human cells, including those of human nasal epithelia. Moreover, pharmacological BRD2 inhibition with the drug ABBV-744 inhibited SARS-CoV-2 replication in Syrian hamsters. We also found that BRD2 controls transcription of several other genes induced upon SARS-CoV-2 infection, including the interferon response, which in turn regulates the antiviral response. Together, our results pinpoint BRD2 as a potent and essential regulator of the host response to SARS-CoV-2 infection and highlight the potential of BRD2 as a novel therapeutic target for COVID-19.

Abstract: Across the Miocene–Pliocene boundary (MPB; 5.3 million years ago, Ma), late Miocene cooling gave way to the early-to-middle Pliocene Warm Period. This transition, across which atmospheric CO2 concentrations increased to levels similar to present, holds potential for deciphering regional climate responses in Asia—currently home to more than half of the world’s population— to global climate change. Here we find that CO2-induced MPB warming both increased summer monsoon moisture transport over East Asia, and enhanced aridification over large parts of Central Asia by increasing evaporation, based on integration of our ~1–2-thousand-year (kyr) resolution summer monsoon records from the Chinese Loess Plateau aeolian red clay with existing terrestrial records, land-sea correlations, and climate model simulations. Our results offer palaeoclimate-based support for ‘wet-gets-wetter and dry-gets-drier’ projections of future regional hydroclimate responses to sustained anthropogenic forcing. Moreover, our high-resolution monsoon records reveal a dynamic response to eccentricity modulation of solar insolation, with predominant 405-kyr and ~100-kyr periodicities between 8.1 and 3.4 Ma., Global warming drove ‘wet gets wetter and dry gets drier’ climate shifts in Asia ~5.3 million years ago with monsoon pacing by ~400,000 and ~ 100,000 year cycles. This could be a template for future Asian climate response to anthropogenic warming.

Abstract: International audience; Optical metasurfaces are 2D flat elements that consist of spatially arranged meta-atoms. By carefully designing the metasurface, it is possible to fully control the properties of light in amplitude, phase, and/or polarization. When merged with liquid crystals (LCs), a metasurface can act as a reconfigurable optical component enabling dynamical control of light. However, many reports ignore the influence of the meta-atom's geometry on the orientation of LCs. Here, it is proposed to synergistically merge LCs and specially designed gold metasurfaces for multiple optical functions. Gold metasurfaces are designed as a template to align the LC molecules in a resolution of ≤2 µm. Meanwhile, the aligned LCs are used to actively control the polarization of the incident light, further achieving active modulation of the plasmonic resonances of gold metasurfaces. The synergistic mergence of LCs and metasurfaces can enable a designed optical device to work simultaneously in both visible and near infrared ranges, which is highly promising for multiple applications simultaneously, such as high-resolution display, modulation, anti-counterfeiting, beam deflection, LiDAR, etc.

Abstract: The "MIcro-Surgical Anastomose Workflow recognition on training sessions" (MISAW) challenge provided a data set of 27 sequences of micro-surgical anastomosis on artificial blood vessels. This data set was composed of videos, kinematics, and workflow annotations described at three different granularity levels: phase, step, and activity. The participants were given the option to use kinematic data and videos to develop workflow recognition models. Four tasks were proposed to the participants: three of them were related to the recognition of surgical workflow at three different granularity levels, while the last one addressed the recognition of all granularity levels in the same model. One ranking was made for each task. We used the average application-dependent balanced accuracy (AD-Accuracy) as the evaluation metric. This takes unbalanced classes into account and it is more clinically relevant than a frame-by-frame score. Six teams, including a non-competing team, participated in at least one task. All models employed deep learning models, such as CNN or RNN. The best models achieved more than 95% AD-Accuracy for phase recognition, 80% for step recognition, 60% for activity recognition, and 75% for all granularity levels. For high levels of granularity (i.e., phases and steps), the best models had a recognition rate that may be sufficient for applications such as prediction of remaining surgical time or resource management. However, for activities, the recognition rate was still low for applications that can be employed clinically. The MISAW data set is publicly available to encourage further research in surgical workflow recognition. Abstract: International audience; Metasurface-based structural coloration is a promising enabling technology for advanced optical encryption with a high-security level. Herein, we propose a paradigm of electrically switchable, polarization-sensitive optical encryption based on designed metasurfaces integrated with polymer-dispersed liquid crystals. The metasurfaces consist of anisotropic and isotropic aluminum nanoaperture arrays. Optical images can be encrypted by elaborately arranging anisotropic and isotropic nanoapertures based on their polarization-dependent plasmonic resonance characteristics. We demonstrate high-quality encrypted images and QR codes with electrically switchable, polarization-sensitive properties based on PDLC-integrated aluminum nanoaperture arrays. The proposed technique can be applied to many fields including high-security optical encryption, security tags, anticounterfeiting, multichannel imaging, and dynamic displays

Abstract: International audience; Whenever a bug or vulnerability is detected in the Linux kernel, the kernel developers will endeavour to fix it by introducing a patch into the mainline version of the Linux kernel source tree. However, many users run older "stable" versions of Linux, meaning that the patch should also be "backported" to one or more of these older kernel versions. This process is error-prone and there is usually a long delay in publishing the backported patch. Based on an empirical study, we show that around 8% of all commits submitted to Linux mainline are backported to older versions, but often more than one month elapses before the backport is available. Hence, we propose a patch backporting technique that can automatically transfer patches from the mainline version of Linux into older stable versions. Our approach first synthesizes a partial transformation rule based on a Linux mainline patch. This rule can then be generalized by analysing the alignment between the mainline and target versions. The generalized rule is then applied to the target version to produce a backported patch. We have implemented our transformation technique in a tool called FixMorph and evaluated it on 350 Linux mainline patches. FixMorph correctly backports 75.1% of them. Compared to existing techniques, FixMorph improves both the precision and recall in backporting patches. Apart from automation of software maintenance tasks, patch backporting helps in reducing the exposure to known security vulnerabilities in stable versions of the Linux kernel.

Abstract: In this work, we propose a novel technique based on wavelength dispersive in situ fluorescence spectroscopy (WDIFS) for diagnosing the wavelength-dependent directional charge transportation and Rayleigh scattering enhanced in-band quantum yield. For the first time, it is clearly demonstrated that the formation of the 2D electron gas in CuO/ZnO and upward Schottky barriers in ZnO/Ag facilitate the photocatalytic performance in the ultraviolet spectral range, and that utilization of the visible spectrum relies on the band alignment between the energy level of the dopants and the Fermi level of Ag. Moreover, it is shown that the wavelength-dependent in-band quantum yield can be controlled through particle size photon scattering, in which the strong Rayleigh scattering based photon harvesting brings about a significant increase in the photocatalytic performance in the ultraviolet spectrum. Eventually, it is forecast that systematic use of the proposed technique for a systematic diagnosis should help towards the production of efficient ZnO-based photocatalysts.

Abstract: International audience; The utility of C-H bond functionalization of metalated ligands for the elaboration of aryl-functionalized difluorinated-1-arylisoquinolinyl Ir(III) complexes has been explored. Bis[(3,5-difluorophenyl)isoquinolinyl](2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato) iridium(III) undergoes Pd-catalyzed C-H bond arylation with aryl bromides. The reaction regioselectively occurred at the C-H bond flanked by the two fluorine atoms of the difluoroaryl unit, and on both cyclometalated ligands. This post-functionalization gives a straightforward access to modified complexes in only one manipulation and allows to introduce thermally sensitive functional groups, such as trifluoromethyl, nitrile, benzoyl, or ester. The X-ray crystallography, photophysical, and electrochemical properties of the diarylated complexes were investigated. Whatever the nature of the incorporated substituted aryl groups is, all obtained complexes emit red phosphorescence (622-632 nm) with similar lifetimes (1.9-2 mu s).

Abstract: Agraïments: This study was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (41571022, 41625001), the Beijing Natural Science Foundation (Grant 8151002). The application of phosphorus (P) fertilizer to agricultural soils increased by 3.2 % annually from 2002 to 2010. We quantified in detail the P inputs and outputs of cropland and pasture, and the P fluxes through human and livestock consumers of agricultural products, at global, regional, and national scales from 2002 to 2010. Globally, half of the total P input (21.3 Tg P yr−1) into agricultural systems accumulated in agricultural soils during this period, with the rest lost to bodies of water through complex flows. Global P accumulation in agricultural soil increased from 2002 to 2010, despite decreases in 2008 and 2009, and the P accumulation occurred primarily in cropland. Despite the global increase of soil P, 32 % of the world's cropland and 43 % of the pasture had soil P deficits. Increasing soil P deficits were found for African cropland, versus increasing P accumulation in Eastern Asia. European and North American pasture had a soil P deficit because continuous removal of biomass P by grazing exceeded P inputs. International trade played a significant role in P redistribution among countries through the flows of P in fertilizer and food among countries. Based on country-scale budgets and trends we propose policy options to potentially mitigate regional P imbalances in agricultural soils, particularly by optimizing the use of phosphate fertilizer and recycling of waste P. The trend of increasing consumption of livestock products will require more P inputs to the agricultural system, implying a low P-use efficiency aggravating the P stocks scarcity in the future. Abstract: Automatic speaker verification (ASV) is one of the most natural and convenient means of biometric person recognition. Unfortunately, just like all other biometric systems, ASV is vulnerable to spoofing, also referred to as "presentation attacks." These vulnerabilities are generally unacceptable and call for spoofing countermeasures or "presentation attack detection" systems. In addition to impersonation, ASV systems are vulnerable to replay, speech synthesis, and voice conversion attacks. The ASVspoof 2019 edition is the first to consider all three spoofing attack types within a single challenge. While they originate from the same source database and same underlying protocol, they are explored in two specific use case scenarios. Spoofing attacks within a logical access (LA) scenario are generated with the latest speech synthesis and voice conversion technologies, including state-of-the-art neural acoustic and waveform model techniques. Replay spoofing attacks within a physical access (PA) scenario are generated through carefully controlled simulations that support much more revealing analysis than possible previously. Also new to the 2019 edition is the use of the tandem detection cost function metric, which reflects the impact of spoofing and countermeasures on the reliability of a fixed ASV system. This paper describes the database design, protocol, spoofing attack implementations, and baseline ASV and countermeasure results. It also describes a human assessment on spoofed data in logical access. It was demonstrated that the spoofing data in the ASVspoof 2019 database have varied degrees of perceived quality and similarity to the target speakers, including spoofed data that cannot be differentiated from bona-fide utterances even by human subjects., Accepted, Computer Speech and Language. Abstract: International audience; Motivated by recent observations of coherent dipolar cyclone-anticyclone structures in the ocean, the modons, and their signature in the surface temperature field, we demonstrate that the classical modon solutions of the barotropic quasi-geostrophic equations can be generalized to include buoyancy or temperature as an active tracer. The properties of such "thermal" modons, and especially their ability to carry heat anomaly over long distances, depend on the relative sign of the associated vorticity and buoyancy anomalies. We show using numerical simulations with the thermal shallow water equations, and their quasi-geostrophic version, that the evolution of the modons is consistent with the observations.

It is also a good tool for making evolutionary algorithms fast, robust and versatile. Abstract: Viruses are a constant threat to global health as highlighted by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, lack of data underlying how the human host interacts with viruses, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus, limits effective therapeutic intervention. We introduce Viral-Track, a computational method that globally scans unmapped scRNA-seq data for the presence of viral RNA, enabling transcriptional cell sorting of infected versus bystander cells. We demonstrate the sensitivity and specificity of Viral-Track to systematically detect viruses from multiple models of infection, including hepatitis B virus in an unsupervised manner. Applying Viral-Track to Bronchoalveloar-Lavage samples from severe and mild COVID-19 patients reveals a dramatic impact of the virus on the immune system of severe patients compared to mild cases. Viral-Track detects an unexpected co-infection of the human MetaPneumoVirus, present mainly in monocytes perturbed in type-I IFN-signaling. Abstract: International audience; Planktonic archaea include predominantly Marine Group I Thaumarchaeota (MG I) and Marine Group II Euryarchaeota (MG II), which play important roles in the oceanic carbon cycle. MG I produce specific lipids called isoprenoid glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs), which are being used in the sea surface temperature proxy named TEX86. Although MG II may be the most abundant planktonic archaeal group in surface water, their lipid composition remains poorly characterized because of the lack of cultured representatives. Circumstantial evidence from previous studies of marine suspended particulate matter suggests that MG II may produce both GDGTs and archaeol-based lipids. In this study, integration of the 16S rRNA gene quantification and sequencing and lipid analysis demonstrated that MG II contributed significantly to thepool of archaeal tetraether lipids in samples collected from MG II-dominated surface waters of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean (NWPO). The archaeal lipid composition in MG II-dominated NWPO waters differed significantly from that of known MG I cultures, containing relatively more 2G-OH-, 2G- and 1G- GDGTs, especially in their acyclic form. Lipid composition in NWPO waters was also markedly different from MG I-dominated surface water samples collected in the East China Sea. GDGTs from MG II-dominated samples seemed to respond to temperature similarly to GDGTs from the MG I-dominated samples, which calls for further study using pure cultures to determine the exact impact of MG II on GDGT-based proxies.

Abstract: In the past decades, forgetting has been investigated for many logics and has found many applications in knowledge representation and reasoning. In this paper, we study forgetting in multi-agent modal logics. We adopt the semantic definition of existential bisimulation quantifiers as that of forgetting. We resort to canonical formulas of modal logics introduced by Moss. An arbitrary modal formula is equivalent to the disjunction of a unique set of satisfiable canonical formulas. We show that, for the logics of K n , D n , T n , K 45 n , KD 45 n and S 5 n , the result of forgetting an atom from a satisfiable canonical formula can be computed by simply substituting the literals of the atom with ⊤. Thus we show that these logics are closed under forgetting, and hence have uniform interpolation. Finally, we generalize the above results to include common knowledge of propositional formulas.

Abstract: Based on the fifth-order scheme in our previous work (Deng et. al (2019) [28]), a new framework of constructing very high order discontinuity-capturing schemes is proposed for finite volume method. These schemes, so-called P n T m − BVD (polynomial of n-degree and THINC function of m-level reconstruction based on BVD algorithm), are designed by employing high-order upwind-biased interpolations and THINC (Tangent of Hyperbola for INterface Capturing) functions with adaptive steepness as the reconstruction candidates. The final reconstruction function in each cell is determined with a multi-stage BVD (Boundary Variation Diminishing) algorithm so as to effectively control numerical oscillation and dissipation. We devise the new schemes up to eleventh order in an efficient way by directly increasing the order of the underlying upwind scheme using high order polynomials. The analysis of the spectral property and accuracy tests show that the new reconstruction strategy well preserves the low-dissipation property of the underlying upwind schemes with high-order polynomials for smooth solution over all wave numbers and realizes n + 1 order convergence rate. The performance of new schemes is examined through widely used benchmark tests, which demonstrate that the proposed schemes are capable of simultaneously resolving small-scale flow features with high resolution and capturing discontinuities with low dissipation. With outperforming results and simplicity in algorithm, the new reconstruction strategy shows great potential as an alternative numerical framework for computing nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws that have discontinuous and smooth solutions of different scales.

Abstract: Photoionization mass spectrometry (PIMS) as a powerful analytical method has been widely utilized and provided valuable insight in the field of gas-phase reactions. Here, a highly sensitive vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer combined with a microwave discharge generator and a fast flow tube reactor has been developed to study radical reactions of atmospheric and combustioninterests. Two kinds of continuous light sources, the tunable VUV synchrotron radiation at Hefei, China for isomer-specific product detection and a commercial krypton discharge lamp for time-consuming kinetic measurements, are employed as photoionization sources in the apparatus. A multiplexed detection with high sensitivity (the limit of detection, LOD ~ 0.8 ppb) and high mass resolution (M/ΔM ~ 2100) has been approached. As representative examples, the self-reaction of the methyl radical, CH3, and the reaction of the methyl radical with molecular oxygen are studied and multiple species including reactive radicals and isomeric/isobaric products are detected and identified. Abstract: The Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft encounter an electron diffusion region (EDR) of asymmetric magnetic reconnection at Earth’s magnetopause. The EDR is characterized by agyrotropic electron velocity distributions on both sides of the neutral line. Various types of plasma waves are produced by the magnetic reconnection in and near the EDR. Here we report large-amplitude electron Bernstein waves (EBWs) at the electron-scale boundary of the Hall current reversal. The finite gyroradius effect of the outflow electrons generates the crescent-shaped agyrotropic electron distributions, which drive the EBWs. The EBWs propagate toward the central EDR. The amplitude of the EBWs is sufficiently large to thermalize and diffuse electrons around the EDR. The EBWs contribute to the cross-field diffusion of the electron-scale boundary of the Hall current reversal near the EDR., Various types of plasma waves are generated around electron diffusion regions (EDRs). Here the authors show electron Bernstein waves (EBWs), at the electron-scale boundary of the Hall current reversal near EDR, are sufficiently strong to diffuse electrons and modify electron pressure tensor.

Abstract: International audience; We report holographic fabrication of nanoporous distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) films with periodic nanoscale porosity via a single-prism configuration. The nanoporous DBR films result from the phase separation in a material recipe, which consists of a polymerizable acrylate monomer and nonreactive volatile solvent. By changing the interfering angle of two laser beams, we achieve the nanoporous DBR films with highly reflective RGB colors. The reflection band of the nanoporous DBR films can be tuned by further filling different liquids into the pores inside the films, resulting in the color change accordingly. Experimental results show that such kind of nanoporous DBR films could be potentially useful for many applications, such as color filters and refractive index sensors.

Abstract: High-resolution global maps of annual urban land coverage provide fundamental information of global environmental change and contribute to applications related to climate mitigation and urban planning for sustainable development. Here we map global annual urban dynamics from 1985 to 2015 at a 30 m resolution using numerous surface reflectance data from Landsat satellites. We find that global urban extent has expanded by 9,687 km2 per year. This rate is four times greater than previous reputable estimates from worldwide individual cities, suggesting an unprecedented rate of global urbanization. The rate of urban expansion is notably faster than that of population growth, indicating that the urban land area already exceeds what is needed to sustain population growth. Looking ahead, using these maps in conjunction with integrated assessment models can facilitate greater understanding of the complex environmental impacts of urbanization and help urban planners avoid natural hazards; for example, by limiting new development in flood risk zones. The world keeps urbanizing. This study finds that since 1985 global urban lands have expanded four times faster than previously recognized and faster than population is growing.

Abstract: International audience; This study compares recent CO, NOx, NMVOC, SO2, BC, and OC anthropogenic emissions from several state-of-the-art top-down estimates to global and regional bottom-up inventories and projections from five Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) in several regions. Results show that top-down emissions derived in several recent studies exhibit similar uncertainty as bottom-up inventories in some regions for certain species and even less in the case of Chinese CO emissions. In general, the largest discrepancies are found outside of regions such as the United States, Europe, and Japan where the most accurate and detailed information on emissions is available. In some regions such as China, which has recently undergone dynamical economic growth and changes in air quality regulations, the top-down estimates better capture recent emission trends than global bottom-up inventories. These results show the potential of top-down estimates to complement bottom-up inventories and to aide in the development of emission scenarios, particularly in regions where global inventories lack the necessary up-to-date and accurate information regarding regional activity data and emission factors such as Africa and India. Areas of future work aimed at quantifying and reducing uncertainty are also highlighted. A regional comparison of recent CO and NOx trends in the five SSPs indicate that SSP126, a strong pollution control scenario, best represents the trends from the top-down and regional bottom-up inventories in the United States, Europe, and China, while SSP460, a low-pollution control scenario, lies closest to actual trends in West Africa. This analysis can be useful for air quality forecasting and near-future pollution control/mitigation policy studies.

Abstract: The reaction of uranacyclopropene complex (C5 Me5 )2 U[η2 -1,2-C2 (SiMe3 )2 ] with B-aryl bis(alkynyl)borane PhB(C≡CPh)2 led to the first six-membered uranium metallaboracycle, while the reaction with B-amino bis(alkynyl)borane (Me3 Si)2 NB(C≡CPh)2 afforded an unexpected uranaborabicyclo[2.2.0] complex via [2+2] cycloaddition. The reaction with CuCl revealed the non-innocent property of the rearranged bis(alkynyl)boron species towards oxidant. The reactions with isocyanide DippNC: (Dipp=2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 ) and isocyanate tBuNCO afforded the novel uranaborabicyclo[3.2.0] complexes. All new complexes have been structurally characterized. DFT calculations were performed to provide more insights into the electronic structures and the reaction mechanism.

Abstract: International audience; Global climate shifted to markedly warmer interglacial conditions across the “mid-Brunhes transition” (MBT, ~400 ka). However, a global MBT synthesis that spans marine and terrestrial evidence remains elusive, which limits our understanding of the role of the MBT in mid-Pleistocene human evolution. We synthesize Asian precipitation reconstructions within a context of global palaeoclimatic records and find that the MBT occurred in two stages. First, stronger warming of northern hemisphere continents, weaker southern hemisphere warming, and related more extensive northward displacement of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) during interglacial marine isotope stage (MIS) 13 intensified and expanded precipitation in Asian monsoon regions and in other widespread northern hemisphere regions, with accompanying carbon reservoir changes featuring globally high marine benthic δ13C values because of vegetation expansion at ~500 ka. Subdued southern hemisphere warming and northward ITCZ displacement decreased southern hemisphere precipitation simultaneously during MIS 13. Second, a shift to globally warmer interglacials at ~400 ka, with elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, smaller ice volume, and higher sea level resulted in sustained high interglacial precipitation in East Asia from MIS 11 onward and sustained high marine benthic δ13C values during MIS 11. We also synthesize palaeoanthropological data and find that the climate and ecosystem changes across the MBT coincided with the timing of human lineage diversification, including the emergence of Neanderthals and Denisovans in Eurasia and Homo sapiens in Africa, and their potential coexistence with H. heidelbergensis, H. erectus, H. floresiensis, H. naledi, and other Homo archaics. The timing of the MBT also coincided with novel hominin behavioural developments, including fire control and the transition from handaxe industries to more versatile Levallois techniques. Combined with environmental theories of human evolution, this chronological coincidence suggests a potential link between mid-Pleistocene environmental and human evolution.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we developed an unstructured fluid solver based on finite volume framework for the low-Mach number compressible flows. The present method, so-called FVMS3 (Finite Volume method based on Merged Stencil with 3rd-order reconstruction) formulates two different numerical procedures for spatial reconstructions based on the quadratic polynomial which is performed by using least-square approximations on a merged stencil. In order to improve the reconstruction for discontinuities, we propose the limiting projection approach and smoothness adaptive fitting (SAF) scheme to suppress the numerical oscillation and limit the numerical dissipation. The resulting discretization algorithm that combines FVMS3 with SAF-based limiting projection scheme has third-order accuracy and resolves both smooth and non-smooth solutions with excellent quality. Additionally, a novel numerical model has been proposed by introducing the advection upstream splitting method (AUSM) flux into the pressure projection formulation which results in a unified scheme that works uniformly up to the incompressible limit. The fluid solver that integrates all above new efforts provides high-fidelity solutions for compressible viscous flows particularly for the low Mach regime. The performance of this new solver is verified by numerous benchmark tests. Our numerical results show that the proposed scheme gives accurate and robust solutions for a wide spectrum of test problems.

Abstract: We launched an array of nine freely floating submarine seismometers near the Galápagos islands, which remained operational for about two years. P and PKP waves from regional and teleseismic earthquakes were observed for a range of magnitudes. The signal-to-noise ratio is strongly influenced by the weather conditions and this determines the lowest magnitudes that can be observed. Waves from deep earthquakes are easier to pick, but the S/N ratio can be enhanced through filtering and the data cover earthquakes from all depths. We measured 580 arrival times for different raypaths. We show that even such a limited number of data gives a significant increase in resolution for the oceanic upper mantle. This is the first time an array of floating seismometers is used in seismic tomography to improve the resolution significantly where otherwise no seismic information is available. We show that the Galápagos Archipelago is underlain by a deep (about 1900 km) 200–300 km wide plume of high temperature, with a heat flux very much larger than predicted from its swell bathymetry. The decrease of the plume temperature anomaly towards the surface indicates that the Earth’s mantle has a subadiabatic temperature gradient.

Abstract: Despite extensive global efforts, secondary bacterial pneumonia still represents a major cause of death in developing countries and is an important cause of long-term functional disability arising from lung tissue damage. Newer approaches to improving treatment outcomes are needed to reduce the significant morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases. Our study, using an experimental mouse model of secondary S. pneumoniae infection, shows that a multimodal treatment that concurrently targets host and pathogen factors improved lung tissue integrity and extended the median survival time of infected mice. The immunoneutralization of host protein cANGPTL4 reduced the severity of pulmonary edema and damage. We show that host-directed therapeutic strategies as well as neutralizing antibodies against pathogen virulence factors are viable adjuncts to standard antimicrobial treatments such as antibiotics. In view of their different modes of action compared to antibiotics, concurrent immunotherapies using antibodies are potentially efficacious against secondary pneumococcal pneumonia caused by antibiotic-resistant pathogens., Secondary bacterial lung infection by Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) poses a serious health concern, especially in developing countries. We posit that the emergence of multiantibiotic-resistant strains will jeopardize current treatments in these regions. Deaths arising from secondary infections are more often associated with acute lung injury, a common consequence of hypercytokinemia, than with the infection per se. Given that secondary bacterial pneumonia often has a poor prognosis, newer approaches to improve treatment outcomes are urgently needed to reduce the high levels of morbidity and mortality. Using a sequential dual-infection mouse model of secondary bacterial lung infection, we show that host-directed therapy via immunoneutralization of the angiopoietin-like 4 c-isoform (cANGPTL4) reduced pulmonary edema and damage in infected mice. RNA sequencing analysis revealed that anti-cANGPTL4 treatment improved immune and coagulation functions and reduced internal bleeding and edema. Importantly, anti-cANGPTL4 antibody, when used concurrently with either conventional antibiotics or antipneumolysin antibody, prolonged the median survival of mice compared to monotherapy. Anti-cANGPTL4 treatment enhanced immune cell phagocytosis of bacteria while restricting excessive inflammation. This modification of immune responses improved the disease outcomes of secondary pneumococcal pneumonia. Taken together, our study emphasizes that host-directed therapeutic strategies are viable adjuncts to standard antimicrobial treatments.

Abstract: Quantum dots (QDs) films or layers are extensively used for various photonic and electronic applications since recent decades. Three-dimensional (3D) nanostructures are the elegant fashion in micro-optics, microfluidics, biomedicine, and imaging. In particular, 3D photoluminescent nanostructures play an important role in detection and sensing as well as emitting systems. In this work, 3D photoluminescent structures containing QDs with feature sizes down to 80 nm are fabricated via two-photon polymerization-based direct laser writing. The photoluminescent images and emission spectra show strong local emission of blue, green, and red light from the polymer micro and nanostructures. The influence of the QDs, laser power, and writing scan speed on the resolution of the as-prepared structures is also investigated. It turns out that the presence of QDs increases the lateral resolution where the feature size of polymer lines can reach 75 nm in 3D. This promising result paves the way for the integration of single nano-emitters with a fine control of their spatial positioning in some nanophotonic devices. NRF (Natl Research Foundation, S’pore)

Abstract: International audience; The 2D molecular assemblies of two structural isomers p-DBPy and d-DBPy relevant to the field of organic electronics. These two molecules only differ in the position of pyridyl N-atoms,. The solution concentration and solvent effects on the adlayer morphology are investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Both kinds of molecules could exhibit obviously different molecular conformations and packing patterns, which demonstrate that the variation of the N-atom position in the pyridyl leads to different intermolecular interactions and stacking styles. Positioning the pyridyl N-atoms proximal to the central conjugated core could change the molecular conformation into a banana shape by bending the molecule, however, the d-DBPy molecule in which pyridyl N-atoms are distal to the central conjugated cores keep a linear shape in the monolayer. This work illustrates that altering the position of N-atoms in pyridyl could influence the film morphology and provides a deeper insight from molecular scale to understand the molecular conformation in different packing patterns, which are benefit for the rational design of future advanced optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: Wind power, a rapidly growing alternative energy source, has been threatened by reductions in global average surface wind speed, which have been occurring over land since the 1980s, a phenomenon known as global terrestrial stilling. Here, we use wind data from in situ stations worldwide to show that the stilling reversed around 2010 and that global wind speeds over land have recovered. We illustrate that decadal-scale variations of near-surface wind are probably determined by internal decadal ocean–atmosphere oscillations, rather than by vegetation growth and/or urbanization as hypothesized previously. The strengthening has increased potential wind energy by 17 ± 2% for 2010 to 2017, boosting the US wind power capacity factor by ~2.5% and explains half the increase in the US wind capacity factor since 2010. In the longer term, the use of ocean–atmosphere oscillations to anticipate future wind speeds could allow optimization of turbines for expected speeds during their productive life spans., This study was supported by the Strategic Priority Research Programme of Chinese Academy of Sciences (grant no. Abstract: During foam cell formation and atherosclerosis development, the scavenger receptor CD36 plays critical roles in lipid uptake and triggering of atherogenicity via the activation of Vav molecules. The Vav family includes three highly conserved members known as Vav1, Vav2, and Vav3. As Vav1 and Vav3 were found to exert function in atherosclerosis development, it remains thus to decipher whether Vav2 also plays a role in the development of atherosclerosis. In this study we found that Vav2 deficiency in RAW264.7 macrophages significantly diminished oxidized LDL uptake and CD36 signaling, demonstrating that each Vav protein family member was required for foam cell formation. Genetic disruption of Vav2 in ApoE-deficient C57BL/6 mice significantly inhibited the severity of atherosclerosis. Strikingly, we further found that the genetic deletion of each member of the Vav protein family by CRISPR/Cas9 resulted in a similar alteration of transcriptomic profiles of macrophages. The three members of the Vav proteins were found to form complexes, and genetic ablation of each single Vav molecule was sufficient to prevent endocytosis of CD36. The functional interdependence of the three Vav family members in foam cell formation was due to their indispensable roles in transcriptomic programing, lipid uptake, and activation of the JNK kinase in macrophages.

Abstract: International audience; Chemotaxis systems are used to model the propagation, aggregation and pattern formation of bacteria/cells in response to an external stimulus, usually a chemical one. A common property of all chemotaxis systems is their ability to model a concentration phenomenon-rapid growth of the cell density in small neighborhoods of concentration points/curves. More precisely, the solution may develop singular, spiky structures, or even blow up in finite time. Therefore, the development of accurate and computationally efficient numerical methods for the chemotaxis models is a challenging task. We study the two-species Patlak-Keller-Segel type chemotaxis system, in which the two species do not compete, but have different chemotactic sensitivities, which may lead to a significantly difference in cell density growth rates. This phenomenon was numerically investigated in [Kurganov and Lukáčová-Medvid'ová, Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. Ser. B, 19 (2014), pp. 131-152] and [Chertock et al., Adv. Comput. Math., 44 (2018), pp. 327-350], where second-and higher-order methods on uniform Cartesian grids were developed. However, in order to achieve high resolution of the density spikes developed by the species with a lower chemotactic sensitivity, a very fine mesh had to be utilized and thus the efficiency of the numerical method was affected. In this work, we consider an alternative approach relying on mesh adaptation, which helps to improve the approximation of the singular structures evolved by chemotaxis models. We develop, in particular, an adaptive moving mesh (AMM) finite-volume semi-discrete upwind method for the two-species chemotaxis system. The proposed AMM technique allows one to increase the density of mesh nodes at the blowup regions. This helps to substantially improve the resolution while using a relatively small number of finite-volume cells.
