Abstract

The Super-Kamiokande and T2K collaborations present a joint measurement of neutrino oscillation parameters from their atmospheric and beam neutrino data. It uses a common interaction model for events overlapping in neutrino energy and correlated detector systematic uncertainties between the two datasets, which are found to be compatible. Using 3244.4 days of atmospheric data and a beam exposure of $19.7(16.3) \times 10^{20}$ protons on target in (anti)neutrino mode, the analysis finds a 1.9$\sigma$ exclusion of CP-conservation (defined as $J_{CP}=0$) and a preference for the normal mass ordering., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We report an updated measurement of the $\nu_{\mu}$-induced, and the first measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced coherent charged pion production cross section on $^{12}C$ nuclei in the T2K experiment. This is measured in a restricted region of the final-state phase space for which $p_{\mu,\pi} > 0.2$ GeV, $\cos(\theta_{\mu}) > 0.8$ and $\cos(\theta_{\pi}) > 0.6$, and at a mean (anti)neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV using the T2K near detector. The measured $\nu_{\mu}$ CC coherent pion production flux-averaged cross section on $^{12}C$ is $(2.98 \pm 0.37 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.) \substack{ +0.49 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{ (Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The new measurement of the $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$-induced cross section on $^{12}{C}$ is $(3.05 \pm 0.71 (stat.) \pm 0.39 (syst.) \substack{ +0.74 \\ -0.00 } \mathrm{(Q^2\,model)}) \times 10^{-40}~\mathrm{cm}^{2}$. The results are compatible with both the NEUT 5.4.0 Berger-Sehgal (2009) and GENIE 2.8.0 Rein-Sehgal (2007) model predictions.

Abstract

Muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance probabilities are identical in the standard three-flavor neutrino oscillation framework, but CPT violation and non-standard interactions can violate this symmetry. In this work we report the measurements of $\sin^{2} \theta_{23}$ and $\Delta m_{32}^2$ independently for neutrinos and antineutrinos. The aforementioned symmetry violation would manifest as an inconsistency in the neutrino and antineutrino oscillation parameters. The analysis discussed here uses a total of 1.97$\times$10$^{21}$ and 1.63$\times$10$^{21}$ protons on target taken with a neutrino and antineutrino beam respectively, and benefits from improved flux and cross-section models, new near detector samples and more than double the data reducing the overall uncertainty of the result. No significant deviation is observed, consistent with the standard neutrino oscillation picture.

Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement of muon neutrino charged-current interactions without pions in the final state using multiple detectors with correlated energy spectra at T2K. The data was collected on hydrocarbon targets using the off-axis T2K near detector (ND280) and the on-axis T2K near detector (INGRID) with neutrino energy spectra peaked at 0.6 GeV and 1.1 GeV respectively. The correlated neutrino flux presents an opportunity to reduce the impact of the flux uncertainty and to study the energy dependence of neutrino interactions. The extracted double-differential cross sections are compared to several Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators showing the agreement between both detectors individually and with the correlated result., Comment: Updated discussion in Sec. Abstract

An upgrade of the near detector of the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment is currently being conducted. This upgrade will include two new Time Projection Chambers, each equipped with 16 charge readout resistive Micromegas modules. A procedure to validate the performance of the detectors at different stages of production has been developed and implemented to ensure a proper and reliable operation of the detectors once installed. A dedicated X-ray test bench is used to characterize the detectors by scanning each pad individually and to precisely measure the uniformity of the gain and the deposited energy resolution over the pad plane. An energy resolution of about 10% is obtained. A detailed physical model has been developed to describe the charge dispersion phenomena in the resistive Micromegas anode. The detailed physical description includes initial ionization, electron drift, diffusion effects and the readout electronics effects. The model provides an excellent characterization of the charge spreading of the experimental measurements and allowed the simultaneous extraction of gain and RC information of the modules.

Abstract

The T2K experiment presents new measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters using $19.7(16.3)\times10^{20}$ protons on target (POT) in (anti-)neutrino mode at the far detector (FD). Compared to the previous analysis, an additional $4.7\times10^{20}$ POT neutrino data was collected at the FD. Significant improvements were made to the analysis methodology, with the near-detector analysis introducing new selections and using more than double the data. Additionally, this is the first T2K oscillation analysis to use NA61/SHINE data on a replica of the T2K target to tune the neutrino flux model, and the neutrino interaction model was improved to include new nuclear effects and calculations. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses are presented, including results on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ and the impact of priors on the $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$ measurement. Both analyses prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of $\sin^2\theta_{23}$ with a nearly maximally CP-violating phase. Assuming the normal ordering and using the constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ from reactors, $\sin^2\theta_{23}=0.561^{+0.021}_{-0.032}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\Delta{}m^2_{32}=2.494_{-0.058}^{+0.041}\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ using constant $\Delta\chi^{2}$ intervals. The CP-violating phase is constrained to $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=-1.97_{-0.70}^{+0.97}$ using Feldman--Cousins corrected intervals, and $\delta_\mathrm{CP}=0,\pi$ is excluded at more than 90% confidence level. A Jarlskog invariant of zero is excluded at more than $2\sigma$ credible level using a flat prior in $\delta_\mathrm{CP}$, and just below $2\sigma$ using a flat prior in $\sin\delta_\mathrm{CP}$. When the external constraint on $\sin^2\theta_{13}$ is removed, $\sin^2\theta_{13}=28.0^{+2.8}_{-6.5}\times10^{-3}$, in agreement with measurements from reactor experiments. These results are consistent with previous T2K analyses.

Abstract

In this paper we describe the performance of a prototype of the High Angle Time Projection Chambers (HA-TPCs) that are being produced for the Near Detector (ND280) upgrade of the T2K experiment. The two HA-TPCs of ND280 will be instrumented with eight Encapsulated Resistive Anode Micromegas (ERAM) on each endplate, thus constituting in total 32 ERAMs. This innovative technique allows the detection of the charge emitted by ionization electrons over several pads, improving the determination of the track position. The TPC prototype has been equipped with the first ERAM module produced for T2K and with the HA-TPC readout electronics chain and it has been exposed to the DESY Test Beam in order to measure spatial and dE/dx resolution. In this paper we characterize the performances of the ERAM and, for the first time, we compare them with a newly developed simulation of the detector response. Spatial resolution better than 800 ${\mu \rm m}$ and dE/dx resolution better than 10% are observed for all the incident angles and for all the drift distances of interest. All the main features of the data are correctly reproduced by the simulation and these performances fully fulfill the requirements for the HA-TPCs of T2K.

The article discusses the effect of additives of waste mineral wool fibers on geopolymer binder. This is an important study in terms of the possibility of recycling mineral wool waste. The paper describes an effective method for pulverizing the wool and the methodology for forming geopolymer samples, labeled G1 for glass-wool-based geopolymer and G2 for stone-wool-based geopolymer. The compressive and flexural strengths and thermal conductivity coefficient of the geopolymer with the addition of mineral fibers were determined. The key element of the article is to verify whether the addition of mineral wool fibers positively affects the properties of the geopolymer. The results obtained prove that the addition of fibers significantly improves the flexural strength. For the G1 formulation, the ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength is 18.7%. However, for G2 samples, an even better ratio of compressive strength to flexural strength values of 26.3% was obtained. The average thermal conductivity coefficient obtained was 1.053 W/(m·K) for the G1 series samples and 0.953 W/(m·K) for the G2 series samples. The conclusions obtained show a correlation between the porosity and compressive strength and thermal conductivity coefficient. The higher the porosity, the better the thermal insulation of the material and the weaker the compressive strength.

Contexte : La syphilis congénitale représente un problème de santé publique important et exige un diagnostic et un traitement précoces pour améliorer les effets des nourrissons. Cette étude vise à décrire les effets en santé publique des cas de syphilis infectieuse chez les patientes enceintes et les facteurs associés à un diagnostic de syphilis congénitale chez leur nourrisson. Méthodes : Nous avons effectué un examen rétrospectif des caractéristiques démographiques et cliniques des cas de syphilis infectieuse diagnostiqués pendant la grossesse et des effets pour les nourrissons en Alberta de 2017 à 2020 à partir de la base de données provinciale sur les maladies transmissibles. Un traitement adéquat à la mère a été défini comme la réception d’au moins une dose de pénicilline G-LA benzathine avec 2,4 millions d’unités de MI au moins 28 jours avant l’accouchement. Une analyse à une et plusieurs variables a été effectuée pour déterminer les facteurs associés au diagnostic de syphilis congénitale à l’aide de la version 25 de SPSS. Résultats : Au total, 374 cas de syphilis infectieuse ont été diagnostiqués pendant la grossesse, et deux patientes ont reçu un diagnostic deux fois au cours d’une même grossesse. La majorité (79,1 %; n = 296) des femmes ont eu un accouchement vivant, et une minorité a eu un avortement thérapeutique (9,4 %; n = 35), une mortinaissance (7,5 %; n = 28) et un avortement spontané (4,0 %; n = 15). Les dossiers de nourrissons (n = 265) étaient disponibles aux fins d’examen (n = 117 cas de syphilis congénitale et 148 cas sans syphilis congénitale). Les corrélations avec les cas de syphilis congénitale étaient le temps de dépistage au troisième trimestre (rapport de cotes rajusté [RCA] 8,4, intervalle de confiance [IC] à 95 %, 2,9–24,6) et moins de 28 jours avant l’accouchement (RCA 8,1, 1,4–47,8 [par rapport au premier et au deuxième trimestre]) et le traitement inadéquat (RCA 86,1, IC, 15,9–466,5). Parmi les cas de syphilis congénitale, 23,1 % (n = 27) étaient des mortinaissances comparativement à un (0,7 %) cas de mortinaissance chez les nourrissons sans syphilis congénitale (p < 0,001). Conclusion : Le dépistage et le traitement précoces de la syphilis pendant la grossesse sont essentiels pour prévenir les effets néfastes chez les nourrissons.

W toku analizy podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na poniższe pytania: jakiego rodzaju zachowania wypracowują osoby chore? jakie są motywacje wpływające na kontynuowanie (bądź zaprzestanie) przyjętych zachowań? jakie zachowania osoby chorujące na stwardnienie rozsiane uznają za „korzystne”, a jakie za „ryzykowne” dla swojego stanu zdrowia? Dociekania zawarte w tekście odnoszą się do subiektywnych znaczeń nadawanych chorobie, dlatego ich teoretyczną wykładnię stanowi koncepcja „zachowań w chorobie” (illness behaviour) autorstwa Davida Mechanica. W celu dotarcia do owych subiektywnych interpretacji i znaczeń, jakie chorzy nadają swojemu SM, zastosowano metodę jakościową, przeprowadzono 30 wywiadów swobodnych z osobami chorymi na SM (postać remisyjno-rzutowa). Ich opinie, opisy wdrażanych działań, przeżytych doświadczeń, emocji i znaczeń, jakie im przypisują, stanowiły przedmiot analizy. Złożoność choroby (SM), nieznajomość jej przyczyn oraz niepewność dotycząca jej przebiegu były czynnikami wpływającymi na to, co osoby chore rozumieją przez „względnie niezależne funkcjonowanie społeczne”, oraz na to, jakie stosują zachowania w chorobie.

Abstract

Innovative building materials should also be pro-environmental. This article discusses the environmental footprint of geopolymer and cement-based mortars. It describes the methodology for preparing geopolymer and cement mortars using mineral wool waste. The phenol–formaldehyde resin used in mineral wool is a source of phenol and formaldehyde emissions to the environment. The prepared mortar samples were subjected to durability tests to assess the correlation between the amount of mineral wool and the flexural and compressive strength of the samples. The key element of the paper is to test whether immobilisation of mineral wool in the geopolymer will reduce leaching of phenol and formaldehyde into the environment. The results revealed that cements prepared with mineral wool showed higher compressive strength, whereas geopolymer samples had better flexural strength. The study also proved that immobilisation of the wool in the geopolymer reduces phenol and formaldehyde leaching significantly.

Abstract Purpose Managing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in skeletally immature patients remains difficult. The main aim of this study was to retrospectively compile normative data on the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the semitendinosus tendon (ST) and the diameter of the ACL in children and young adults. Methods Knee magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations were performed for a 2-year period in 132 patients (83 female and 49 male patients). The mean age was 14.9 years (8–18 years). Measurements of the ST CSA were performed on axial views in greyscale by two independent researchers. The ACL diameter was measured as well. Results The results show the CSA of the ST was related to age, and its growth was not linear. The highest growth rate of the CSA of the ST occurred at age 12–13 at the level of the femoral growth plate and at the level of the tibial plateau. The growth of the ACL diameter was linear until 18 years of age. Conclusions ST growth (measured in CSA increments) is almost complete at the age of 13, even though the growth is not linear. ACL growth measured in diameter increments proceeds linearly from 8 to 18 years of age. MRI is a clinically useful tool for assessing hamstring tendon grafts preoperatively. Abstract Background There is a need for acceptable and feasible HIV testing options to ensure people living with HIV know their status so they can access care. Pharmacist-provided HIV point-of-care testing (POCT) may overcome testing barriers, including privacy concerns, testing wait times, and improve accessibility. In the APPROACH study, we aimed to develop and assess an HIV POCT program in community pharmacies for future scale up and evaluation. This paper describes the program uptake, participant and pharmacist experiences, and implementation factors. Methods A pharmacist-provided HIV POCT program was offered in 4 pharmacies in two Canadian provinces. A mixed methods design incorporated self-report questionnaire data, participant telephone interviews, pharmacist focus groups, workload analysis, and situational analysis to assess the uptake, acceptability and feasibility of the HIV POCT program. Results Over the 6-month pilot, 123 HIV tests were performed. One new case of HIV was identified; this participant was linked with confirmatory testing and HIV care. Participants were predominantly male (76%), with a mean age of 35 years. This was the first HIV test for 27% participants, and 75% were at moderate to very high risk of undiagnosed HIV infection, by Denver HIV Risk Score. Questionnaires and telephone interviews showed participants were very satisfied with the program; 99% agreed HIV POCT should be routinely offered in pharmacies and 78% were willing to pay for the service. Participants felt the pharmacy was convenient, discreet, and that the pharmacist was supportive and provided education about how to reduce their future risk. Pharmacists felt prepared, confident, and expressed professional satisfaction with offering HIV POCT. Community and public health supports, clear linkage to care plans to refer participants with positive HIV POCT results, and provision of counselling tools were important enabling factors for the program. Pharmacist remuneration, integration with existing healthcare systems, and support for ongoing promotion of HIV POCT availability in pharmacies were identified as needs for future scale-up and sustainability. Conclusions A successful model of pharmacy-based POCT, including linkage to care, was developed. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of this approach in finding new diagnoses and linking them with care. This article presents an analysis of a fragment of a larger study on transgender individuals. In this study, the authors focused exclusively on the experience of gender incongruence; the conflict between gender identity and the gender conferred at birth. In order to clearly explain the scope of this study, the first part of the article presents transgender theories, and those related to identity and gender identity. The second part of the article presents strategies for combatting gender incongruence. These are developed on the basis of the collected empirical material, and through consideration of evidence concerning whether gender incongruence had a significant impact on the formation of the personal and social identity of transgender individuals. The research was based on a qualitative approach, with the main technique employed being a free-form interview. The research was performed throughout the whole of Poland.

Abstract

Przedmiotem artykułu jest filozoficzno-prawna analiza kategorii słuszności w orzecznictwie polskich sądów. Autorka wyróżnia dwa główne sposoby powoływania się na słuszność przez sądy: 1) pośredni – przez zastosowanie przepisu zawierającego klauzulę generalną wskazującą na słuszność lub na inne wartości oraz 2) bezpośredni – wskutek dobrowolnego powołania się na słuszność w ramach dyskrecjonalnej władzy sędziego. Autorka przedstawia przykłady z orzecznictwa polskiego pokazujące, w jakim celu sądy powołują się na słuszność z własnej inicjatywy. Odwołanie do słuszności może zarówno potwierdzać rezultaty przeprowadzonej wykładni, jak i się im sprzeciwiać. Sądy wykorzystują argument ze słuszności także w uzasadnieniu cząstkowych decyzji kluczowych dla podjęcia ostatecznego rozstrzygnięcia, a nawet przy mniej wiążących ustaleniach (jak np. postulatach za zmianą prawa). W zakończeniu sformułowane są wnioski dotyczące rozumienia słuszności a casu ad casum oraz wykraczaniu w tym względzie praktyki orzeczniczej poza ramy nakreślone przez ustawodawcę. Autorka formułuje wniosek, że w wielu przypadkach sąd nadaje znaczenie słuszności dopiero na etapie stosowania prawa, podczas procesu interpretacji i dobierania argumentów na potrzeby orzeczenia. Ponadto wyprowadza konkluzję, że sądy często odwołują się do słuszności z pominięciem wyjaśnienia tego pojęcia czy uzasadnienia jego zastosowania. W związku z tym, można pokusić się o refleksję, że niemożliwe jest uniknięcie choć niewielkiej dozy subiektywizmu przy odwołaniu się do słuszności.

In July 2018, a case of Neisseria gonorrhoeae associated with ceftriaxone treatment failure was identified in Alberta, Canada. We identified the isolate and nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) specimen as the ceftriaxone-resistant strain multilocus sequence type 1903/NG-MAST 3435/NG-STAR 233, originally identified in Japan (FC428), with the same penA 60.001 mosaic allele and genetic resistance determinants. Core single-nucleotide variant (SNV) analysis identified 13 SNVs between this isolate and FC428. Culture-independent surveillance by PCR for the A311V mutation in the penA allele and N. gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing directly from NAAT transport media positive for N. gonorrhoeae by NAAT did not detect spread of the strain. We identified multiple sequence types not previously detected in Alberta by routine surveillance. This case demonstrates the benefit of using culture-independent methods to enhance detection, public health investigations, and surveillance to address this global threat.

Abstract

Waste generated in fine wool production is homogeneous and without contamination, which increases its chances of reuse. Waste mineral wool from demolition sites belongs to the specific group of waste. However, the storage and collection require implementing restrictive conditions, such as improper storage of mineral wool, which is highly hazardous for the environment. The study focuses on the leachability of selected pollutants (pH, Cl−, SO42−) and heavy metals (Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) from the waste mineral wool. As a solution to the problem of storing mineral wool waste, it was proposed to process it into wool-based geopolymer. The geopolymer, based on mineral wool, was also assessed regarding the leaching of selected impurities. Rock mineral wool is very good for geopolymerisation, but the glass wool needs to be completed with additional components rich in Al2O3. The research involved geopolymer prepared from mineral glass wool with bauxite and Al2O3. So far, glass wool with the mentioned additives has not been tested. An essential aspect of the article is checking the influence of wool-based geopolymer on the environment. To investigate the environmental effects of the wool-based monolith and crushed wool geopolymers were compared. Such research has not been conducted so far. For this purpose, water extracts from fragmented geopolymers were made, and tests were carried out following EN 12457-4. There is no information in the literature on the influence of geopolymer on the environment, which is an essential aspect of its possible use. The research results proved that the geopolymer made on the base of mineral wool meets the environmental requirements, except for the pH value. As mentioned in the article, the geopolymerisation process requires the dissolution of the starting material in a high pH (alkaline) solution. On the other hand, the pH minimum 11.2 value of fresh geopolymer binder is required to start geopolymerisation. Moreover, research results analysed in the literature showed that the optimum NaOH concentration is 8 M. for the highest compressive strength of geopolymer. Therefore, the geopolymer strength decreases with NaO concentration in the NaOH solution. Geopolymers glass wool-based mortars with Al2O3 obtained an average compressive strength of 59, the geopolymer with bauxite achieved about 51 MPa. Thus, Al2O3 is a better additional glass wool-based geopolymer than bauxite. The average compressive strength of rock wool-based geopolymer mortar was about 62 MPa. The average compressive strength of wool-based geopolymer binder was about 20–25 MPa. It was observed that samples of geopolymers grout without aggregate participation are characterised by cracking and deformation.

ObjectivesTo review the notification rate and characteristics of tertiary and neurosyphilis cases in Alberta, Canada in the postantibiotic era.MethodsA retrospective review of all neurosyphilis and tertiary syphilis cases reported in Alberta from 1973 to March 2017 was undertaken and cases classified into early neurosyphilis, late neurosyphilis and cardiovascular (CV) syphilis. Variables collected included demographics, sexual partners, HIV status, clinical parameters, symptoms and treatment and distributions were compared between early versus late neurosyphilis and asymptomatic versus symptomatic cases (stratified by early versus late stage). Data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics V.19.0.Results254 cases were identified; 251 were neurosyphilis and 3 were CV. No cases of gummatous syphilis were reported. Early neurosyphilis accounted for 52.4% (n=133) and 46.1% (n=117) were late neurosyphilis cases; one (0.4%) case with unknown duration. Three outbreaks of infectious syphilis were identified during the study period and a concurrent rise in both early and late neurosyphilis was observed during the outbreak periods. The most common manifestation of symptomatic neurosyphilis was ocular involvement which was more likely in early neurosyphilis. Relative to late neurosyphilis cases, early neurosyphilis cases were more likely to be younger, Caucasian, born in Canada, HIV positive and reporting same sex partners.ConclusionsOur review of tertiary and neurosyphilis cases found that early and late neurosyphilis cases continue to occur in the context of cycling syphilis outbreaks. CV syphilis cases were extremely rare. Ongoing identification of new cases of syphilis and clinical evaluation of cases for complications continues to be important in the context of global resurgence of syphilis.

Abstract

Extended postoperative mandibular reconstructions due to orofacial disease involving the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in immature patients remain a challenge as a result of ongoing growth, which is usually affected by the disease and treatment. Current reconstructive techniques based fully on alloplastic total joint replacement fail to meet fully the anatomical and functional requirements for the masticatory system and speech development. Fourteen children aged 12.6 ± 2.6 with tumors or congenital deformities affecting the mandible and TMJ were included in the study. Radical surgical treatment according to our own protocol was performed through microvascular anastomotic flap reconstruction of the soft tissues and bones, together with total TMJ custom replacements. Follow-up lasted 2–6 years. During the follow-up, increases in the mandible body (13% growth) and ramus (12% growth) were observed, both of which were related (p < 0.001). This is the first report concerning the immediate reconstruction of the mandible with ramus and total TMJ in children and adolescents that combines a free vascularized graft and total individual prosthesis of the TMJ. The presented technique enabled optimal function of the TMJ, growth of the mandible, and further rehabilitation of the patients. The technique was demonstrated to be safe, reliable, and provide good functional and cosmetic outcomes.

Alberta established a surveillance system in 2001 to monitor resistance to antibiotics used for the treatment of gonorrhea. A retrospective review of gonorrhea cases during the last five years was conducted. All cases of gonorrhea were reportable to public health by testing laboratories and clinicians. Specimens were primarily submitted for nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT); three sentinel sites obtained specimens for culture and NAAT. The Provincial Laboratory for Public Health conducted E-tests on isolates for multiple antibiotics. A proportion of isolates and NAAT specimens were submitted to the National Microbiology Laboratory for sequence typing (ST). Data were combined and analyzed using SAS version 9.4. Between 2012 and 2016, 13,132 gonorrhea cases were reported; 22.0% (n = 2891) had isolates available for susceptibility testing. All culture positive isolates were susceptible to ceftriaxone. Decreased susceptibility (0.5 ug/mL) to cefixime was reported in four cases in 2014. Resistance to azithromycin (≥2 ug/mL) ranged between 0.4% and 1.8%. Many (n = 509) unique STs were identified; the most prevalent sequence groups (SG) were SG-7638 (n = 367), SG-5985 (n = 145), and SG-11299 (n = 127). The Alberta model for maintaining surveillance for antimicrobial resistance in gonorrhea employs culture and NAAT specimens, providing information crucial to informing provincial treatment guidelines.

Abstract

In this paper a new method of fusion predictions obtained based on dispersed data is proposed. In the method a power index is used. This approach allows to calculate the real power of prediction vectors generated based on local data with using the k-nearest neighbors classifier. The use of two power indices: Shapley-Shubik and Banzhaf-Coleman power index is analyzed. The influence of k-parameter value and the value of quota in simple game on the classification accuracy is also studied. The obtained results are compared with the approach in which the power index was not used. It was found that the proposed method of using the power index improves the classification accuracy. Abstract

Irreversible ureteral damage is a rare and challenging problem for pediatric urologists. Ileal replacement has become one of the limited surgical options for ureteral reconstruction. Only a few papers have examined the results of the ileal ureter and renal function outcomes. Furthermore, there are even fewer papers showing patients with the intestinal ureter, which is used to drain urine from a solitary kidney in early childhood. To perform a systematic review and analyze available cases of the long-term function of the "neoureter" and differences in the surgical approach. To present the case of a 29-year-old female with a history of ileal replacement of the ureter in a solitary kidney which was performed in this patient at the age of 14 months. PubMed and Scopus were used to search for eligible articles. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were strictly followed. Based on the titles, abstracts, and full-text reviews, 77 articles were analyzed, of which only 23 were directly related to pediatric cases of our interest. Medical records of the female patient, who has been treated in our center since 1991, were retrospectively described and reviewed. Of 23 papers, we identified 75 cases of children who underwent ureteral substitution. The outcomes of the procedure are satisfactory and acceptable. The presented case of the female patient shows a good therapeutic option. Ileal ureteral reconstruction is a safe and effective therapeutic option (even in a long-term follow-up). Abstract

Background: HIV transmission during pregnancy and breastfeeding among serodiscordant heterosexual couples represents an ongoing barrier to the elimination of vertical transmission of HIV-1 infection in Canada. Objective: To report a case of vertical HIV transmission during breastfeeding and examine the prevalence of risk factors for HIV transmission in the pregnancy and postpartum periods among serodiscordant couples where the male partner is HIV positive and female partner HIV negative. Methods: Case report and retrospective chart review of HIV-serodiscordant pregnant couples over an eight-year period in Edmonton, Canada. Results: We report a case of maternal primary HIV infection during the postpartum period and vertical transmission to a nursing infant that went undetected until the infant presented with AIDS. We also report a series of 41 serodiscordant pregnant couples identified by our public health nurse between 2008 and 2016. Among HIV-infected male partners, 20 (49%) had a detectable viral load (VL) during their partner’s pregnancy and during breastfeeding, with median peak VL 4,700 copies/mL (range 49-120,000) and 5,100 copies/mL (range 40-120,000) during pregnancy and breastfeeding, respectively. None of the female partners seroconverted during pregnancy, but three seroconverted at 1.8, 2.4, and 6.9 years after delivery. No vertical transmission occurred. Conclusion: Despite concerted attempts to minimize HIV transmission during pregnancy and breastfeeding in our well-resourced setting, residual transmission risk remains due to non-suppressed viral load within many HIV-serodiscordant pregnant couples.

38. Limits to simplified calculation of uncut chip thickness in milling.

Abstract

Abstract Modelling of forces and temperatures for mechanical cutting processes is mainly based on the prevailing local uncut chip geometry. In this context, most researchers use a simplified equation for calculating the uncut chip thickness in milling processes, which neglects the tool movement in feed direction and simplifies the chip thickness. The simplified equation can be easily evaluated, but also adds errors to the calculation results. These errors are typically neglected without knowledge of their exact size. However, the resulting error is dependent on the cutting parameters like cutting speed, tool feed and radial tool engagement and can be very large. In order to quantify the resulting error for different cutting conditions, a novel approach for a more precise calculation of the uncut chip thickness is presented in this paper. Using this new calculation model the uncut chip thickness is determined for industrial relevant cutting parameters and tool dimensions in the first step. The second step includes the direct comparison of the calculated values to the simplified calculation. In this way, the resulting error is illustrated for different cutting situations, mainly focusing on full slot milling and the contact area, where the workpiece surface is generated. As a result, limits for the application of the simplified engagement calculation are presented. Abstract

Introduction Although saphenous vein grafts are widely used conduits for coronary artery bypass graft surgery, their clinical value remains limited due to high failure rates. The aim of the study was to evaluate feasibility, safety, and biocompatibility of peritoneal derived vascular grafts (PDVG) formed on a silicone-coated, latex, Foley catheter in a stromal cell-derived factor (SDF-1)- enriched environment.Methods Foley catheters were implanted into the parietal wall of 8 sheep. After 21 days the peritoneal cavity was re-opened and the newly formed tissue fragments were harvested. The animals were randomly assigned into: (1) study group in which conduits were incubated in a solution containing SDF-1, (2) control group without SDF-1 incubation. Left carotid arteries were accessed and “end-to-side” anastomoses were performed. Biological materials for histological examination were taken at 4, 7, 10, and 14 days.Results and Conclusions The study proved safety, feasibility, and biocompatibility of PDVG formed on the basis of a silicone-coated, latex catheter in an SDF-1 chemokine-enriched environment. These biological grafts effectively integrated with the native high-pressure arterial environment in an ovine model and provided favorable vascular profile. The potential clinical value of this technology needs to be further elucidated in long-term preclinical and clinical studies.

Establishment and stabilization of endothelial tubes with patent lumens is vital during vertebrate development. Ras-interacting protein 1 (RASIP1) has been described as an essential regulator of de novo lumenogenesis through modulation of endothelial cell (EC) adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM). Here, we show that in mouse and zebrafish embryos, Rasip1-deficient vessels transition from an angioblast cord to a hollow tube, permit circulation of primitive erythrocytes, but ultimately collapse, leading to hemorrhage and embryonic lethality. Knockdown of RASIP1 does not alter EC-ECM adhesion, but causes cell-cell detachment and increases permeability of EC monolayers in vitro. We also found that endogenous RASIP1 in ECs binds Ras-related protein 1 (RAP1), but not Ras homolog gene family member A or cell division control protein 42 homolog. Using an exchange protein directly activated by cyclic adenosine monophosphate 1 (EPAC1)-RAP1–dependent model of nascent junction formation, we demonstrate that a fraction of the RASIP1 protein pool localizes to cell-cell contacts. Loss of RASIP1 phenocopies loss of RAP1 or EPAC1 in ECs by altering junctional actin organization, localization of the actin-bundling protein nonmuscle myosin heavy chain IIB, and junction remodeling. Our data show that RASIP1 regulates the integrity of newly formed blood vessels as an effector of EPAC1-RAP1 signaling.

44. Mechanisms Acting in Ligand-Directed Heterogeneous Catalysis: Electronic, Geometric, and Enol-Induced Effects

Abstract

We present a mechanistic study on the role of the ligand layer in promoting chemoselective hydrogenation of an α,β-unsaturated aldehyde acrolein toward propanol over functionalized heterogeneous catalysts. By creating a ligand-containing overlayer on Pd(111) via deposition of different types of organic adsorbates, we address the electronic and the geometric effects as well as the effects induced by formation of enol-containing ligand complexes, which play a crucial role in rendering the catalytic surface highly selective toward the hydrogenation of the C═O bond. Toward this goal, we apply a rigorous surface science approach by measuring the isothermal reaction kinetics via multiple molecular beam techniques and by simultaneous monitoring the evolution of the reaction intermediates via operandoinfrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRAS). Additionally, the chemical composition of the ligand layer and its dynamic changes under the operational conditions are addressed by IRAS. Specifically, three types of ligand precursors were employed to functionalize the Pd(111) surface: allyl cyanide, 2-methyl-2-pentenal, and acetophenone. We show that principally different fundamental effects─geometric, electronic as well as the effects related to more complex lateral interactions with keto–enol complexes─are acting in catalysis on different types of ligand-functionalized surfaces. It was demonstrated that, by changing the functional groups and the chain length of the ligand, it becomes possible to efficiently tune the interaction of acrolein with the ligand-modified surface to produce the desired reaction intermediate─propenoxy species─and finally the target product propenol. The outcome of this study provides deep atomistic-level insights in surface processes underlying ligand-directed heterogeneous catalysis and offers a prospect of rational design of new catalytic materials with tailor-made catalytic properties.

The rising tide of obesity erodes the health of youths and many times results in adult obesity. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effectiveness of an eight-session health promotion/transtheoretical model Internet/video-delivered intervention to increase physical activity and reduce dietary fat among low-income, culturally diverse, seventh-grade students. Those who completed more than half the sessions increased exercise, t(103) = -1.99, p = .05, and decreased the percentage of dietary fat, t(87) = 2.73, p = .008. Responses to the intervention by stage of change, race, and income are examined.
