Abstract Pulse oximetry is widely used in medical settings and in everyday life for the estimation of peripheral blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). However, SpO2 response measured on the peripheral parts of the body (such as fingers and wrists) has a time lag compared to measuring on the forehead. In addition, current devices are centimeter‐thick, making seamless integration with the body difficult, and hindering continuous monitoring. Here a design, fabrication, and evaluation of a SpO2 and heart rate sensor based on flexible hybrid electronics (FHE) is presented. The marriage of flexible electronics with high‐performance commercially available integrated circuit (IC) chips makes advanced sensing, data processing, and wireless data transmission functionalities possible on a thin (1.6 mm) and flexible form that can be attached to various parts of the body. Differently from most devices using FHE, here a cost‐efficient and mass‐production compatible multilayer screen‐printing process for making the interconnection circuitry is described in detail, including topographic analysis. By optimizing the printing steps, interconnecting lines vertically traversing up to five printed layers over several tens of micrometers can be fabricated, increasing the spatial density. The device reliably detects hypoxemia, and when applied on the forehead, changes in SpO2 appear >10 s earlier compared to a finger‐based medical‐grade device.

Abstract Temperature correction for sensors is a critical aspect of ensuring accurate measurements in wearable devices, because skin and sweat temperatures vary between 20 and 40 °C depending on individual and time. Here, this study reports on the temperature dependence and correction techniques of printed Na+, K+, and pH sensors toward wearable applications. The ion sensor array is fabricated using a cost‐effective printing method. To enable temperature correction, a printed thermistor of crosslinked poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is monolithically integrated with the ion sensor array on a flexible plastic substrate. Temperature dependence of the potential response of the printed ion sensors exhibits a linear behavior with a slope of 1–2 mV °C−1 in the physiological skin temperature range of 20–40 °C. Applying temperature correction to the ion sensors, the maximum relative errors are reduced from 60% to 7.8% for the Na+ sensors and from 76% to 14.6% for the K+ sensors, while the maximum absolute error is reduced from 0.88 to 0.19 for the pH sensors, indicating the critical importance of temperature correction as a technology for wearable printed ion sensors.

Abstract Integration of organic thin‐film transistor (OTFT) devices with a wireless data transmission system such as 2.4‐GHz Bluetooth low energy (BLE) is a significant requirement for activating the Internet of Thing (IoT) ecosystem based on a vast number of sensors, while conventional OTFT circuits have problems with their high output impedance and the need for multiple power supplies. Here, a wireless, real‐time, and flexible sodium ion sensing system composed of a printed Na+ sensor, printed OTFT‐based amplifiers, inorganic passive elements, a BLE module, and a 3‐V sheet‐type battery is demonstrated. The printed organic amplifier circuits based on dual threshold technology and dual‐gate structure are combinable with a BLE module because of their low output impedance of 50 kΩ and operate with 3‐V single supply as well as improving operational stability under illumination. The sensitivity to Na+ concentration is improved from 53.7 to 242.5 mV dec−1 (4.5 times higher) by the OTFT‐based amplifier, and the data is transmitted in real‐time to a tablet via the BLE wireless communication.

Abstract Recently, self‐driven soft robotics based on biomimetics, capable of mimicking biological motion, has attracted attention. Soft actuators using intrinsically soft organic materials are expected to be applied to haptic devices, artificial muscles, and micropumps. Ferroelectric polymers can aid in the realization of such soft actuators. However, actuators using such materials encounter problems in terms of the response frequency to an applied voltage. In this study, a soft actuator is fabricated by a printing process using a unique composite material comprising P(VDF‐TrFE), nano‐carbon material (single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and graphene oxide (GO)), and conductive polymer. To characterize the actuator using a minimum substrate thickness of 25 µm, hysteresis curves in the ferroelectric properties and driving characteristics according to the applied frequency are clarified. In addition, the mechanical life of the actuator under continuous voltage sweep is clarified considering it as a mechanical property. Subsequently, a simple haptics system is constructed using the fabricated actuators, and a human‐sensitive actuator demonstration system is constructed wherein the phase of the sweep frequency is variable.

Abstract Robotic machine interfaces with sensor devices in robotics applications can facilitate the proper handling of objects. The wide‐range responses of the sensors are important for achieving statement of recognition in tactile sensing systems. Thus, this study proposes a novel micro‐pore‐induced soft pressure sensor via wide‐range response by synthesizing functional composite materials with ether‐surfactant and conductive materials. The aim is to produce soft pressure sensors that are highly responsive and exhibit a wide sensitivity range for the detection of an applied pressure. The sensor comprises a multiwalled‐carbon nanotube, an ether‐based surfactant, and polymeric soft materials, which exhibit high‐speed response characteristics because of the microporous structure of the sensing layer. Moreover, a novel wearable robotic machine interface for facilitating object manipulation is achieved. Furthermore, the findings of this study in terms of the performance of the robotic‐tactile sensing sensor confirm its suitability for the machine interface of an artificial perception system. Furthermore, a real‐time tactile sensing system using the manufactured sensor in the form of wearable e‐skins is experimentally demonstrated.

Applications of organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) include wearable health monitors and next-generation Internet-of-Things systems driven by a small energy-harvesting power supply. Such applications require low voltage and low power consumption organic ICs. In this paper, we demonstrate complementary ICs based on printed p-type and n-type OTFTs operatable at an ultralow supply voltage of 200 mV. For that purpose, threshold voltages were finely tuned by dual-gate structure and self-assembled monolayer. Complementary inverter-based ring oscillators operated at small supply voltages down to 200 mV and exhibited a power consumption as small as 6 pW per stage.

Porous structures and micropatterning surfaces play a crucial role in the development of highly sensitive force sensors. However, achieving these two conductive architectures typically requires the synthesis of complex materials and expensive manufacturing processes. In this study, we introduce a novel conductive composite film featuring a microporous/micropyramid hybrid conductive architecture, which is achieved through a straightforward process of materials mixing and one-step screen printing. By utilizing a deep eutectic solvent in the ink component, micropores are induced in the printed composite, while the mesh of the screen mask acts as a template, resulting in a micropyramid film surface. We have successfully realized highly sensitive flexible force sensors (0.15 kPa−1) with multifunctional capabilities for perceiving normal force and shear force.

Techniques for noninvasively acquiring the vital information of infants and young children are considered very useful in the fields of healthcare and medical care. An unobstructive measurement method for sleeping infants and young children under the age of 6 years using a sheet-type vital sensor with a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) pressure-sensitive layer is demonstrated. The signal filter conditions to obtain the ballistocardiogram (BCG) and phonocardiogram (PCG) are discussed from the waveform data of infants and young children. The difference in signal processing conditions was caused by the physique of the infants and young children. The peak-to-peak interval (PPI) extracted from the BCG or PCG during sleep showed an extremely high correlation with the R-to-R interval (RRI) extracted from the electrocardiogram (ECG). The vital changes until awakening in infants monitored using a sheet sensor were also investigated. In infants under one year of age that awakened spontaneously, the distinctive vital changes during awakening were observed. Understanding the changes in the heartbeat and respiration signs of infants and young children during sleep is essential for improving the accuracy of abnormality detection by unobstructive sensors.

We present a high-performance flexible bending strain sensor for directional motion detection of human hands and soft robotic grippers. The sensor was fabricated using a printable porous conductive composite composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and carbon black (CB). The utilization of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) in the ink formulation induced a phase segregation between the CB and PDMS and led to a porous structure inside the printed films after being vapored. This simple and spontaneously formed conductive architecture provided superior directional bend-sensing characteristics compared to conventional random composites. The resulting flexible bending sensors displayed high bidirectional sensitivity (gauge factor of 45.6 under compressive bending and 35.2 under tensile bending), negligible hysteresis, good linearity (>0.99), and excellent bending durability (over 10,000 cycles). The multifunctional applications of these sensors, including human motion detection, object-shape monitoring, and robotic perceptions, are demonstrated as a proof-of-concept.

Abstract This report is the first on heat-assisted transferable battery components, enabling manufacturing batteries on non-planer surfaces such as a curved surface and an edge. The transferrable battery components were composed of two layers: a cathode or an anode and a conductive heal-melt adhesive layer on a silicone-based flexible supporting paper. These mechanically-durable, flexible components enabled conformable adhesion even on curved surfaces and substrate edges. As a model battery, the manganese dioxide-zinc system was constructed on a curved surface using transfer techniques and showed a practical capacity of 1.8 mAh cm−2 per unit electrode area. These transferable electrodes allow arbitrary design of batteries according to the power consumption of IoT devices to be fabricated on unreported geometries where has been considered as a dead space.

Flexible sensors that respond to chemical stimuli in the body are promising for personal health monitoring. Here, a flexible immunosensor is printed onto a 1 μm-thick film, which can detect an immunological protein marker.

Eco-friendly flexible humidity sensors with high sensing performance are desired for the next-generation wearable electronics. In this work, we developed a high-performance fully printed flexible humidity sensor using all-carbon functional materials. The electrodes and sensing layer of the sensor were printed using all-carbon-based cellulose nanofiber/graphene nanoplatelet (CNF/GNP) composites. The newly developed CNF/GNP ink can be prepared by simple mixing without any complex processes. These sensors showed a high resistive response of 240% over the relative humidity (RH) range of 30% to 90%, with response and recovery times of 17 s and 22 s, respectively, and good mechanical flexibility. Since CNF and GNPs are abundant in nature, degradable, and biocompatible, this work suggests the possibility of manufacturing inexpensive, eco-friendly sensors with high performances. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the application of our sensor in human respiration detection, non-contact proximity sensing, and baby-diaper wetness monitoring.

Source-gated transistors (SGTs) are emerging devices enabling high-gain single-stage amplifiers with low complexity. To date, the p-type printed organic SGT (OSGT) has been developed and showed high gain and low power consumption. However, complementary OSGT circuits remained impossible because of the lack of n-type OSGTs. Here, we show the first n-type OSGTs, which are printed and have a high intrinsic gain over 40. A Schottky source contact is intentionally formed between an n-type organic semiconductor, poly{[N,N′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene)} (N2200), and the silver electrode. In addition, a blocking layer at the edge of the source electrode plays an important role to improve the saturation characteristics and increase the intrinsic gain. Such n-type printed OSGTs and complementary circuits based on them are promising for flexible and wearable electronic devices such as for physiological and biochemical health monitoring.

Tactile sensing is desirable for skillful object handling in soft robotics applications. Real‐time measurement and identification of dynamic shear forces are crucial for slip detection and object interaction. This study proposes a soft sensor with a closed‐loop feedback system for dynamic shear force detection to address object slippage in a soft robotic gripper. The sensor is made of a ferroelectric polymer with nanocarbon materials because of the resulting improved crystallinity and good sensitivity. The sensor shows high performance and high‐speed response for detecting dynamic shear forces when fragile objects (e.g., vegetables) slip from the soft gripper. The artificial cutaneous sensor shows high sensitivity for grasping such objects with the gripper. Furthermore, the feedback system provides a control system for operations and avoids the need for training for various tasks, thus demonstrating the potential of the proposed system for novel soft robotics applications such as biomimetic electronic skin.

We report the fabrication of a low-cost, and highly reproducible large scale surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate using an inkjet-printed Ag nanoparticle-ink (AgNI). The AgNI SERS substrates were evaluated for SERS using trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (BPY) as a molecular probe. AgNI substrates significantly enhanced the SERS signals with the limit of detection of 1.8 ​× ​10−7 g/mL for BPY. The printed AgNI dot arrays exhibit an excellent SERS performance and reproducibility. The batch-to-batch and spot-to-spot standard deviation value of less than 10% was obtained. The results reveal the reproducibility of the AgNI SERS dot arrays and its potential application for SERS substrates.

The scalability of printable integrated circuits is lagging far behind that of conventional silicon-based technologies. Here, Kwon et al. show a three-dimensional integration approach by stacking printeddual-gate organic transistors on plastic foils with a density of 60 transistors per centimeter square.

In this contribution, we propose a fully printed charge amplifier for on-skin biosignal measurements. The amplifier is fabricated on an ultra-thin parylene substrate and consists of organic transistors, integrated bias and feedback resistors, and a feedback capacitor. The fabrication process utilizes inkjet-printed Ag ink for source, drain, gate, and capacitor electrode metallization as well as for the interconnects between the amplifier elements. Dispensed polystyrene, 2,7-dihexyl-dithieno[2,3-d;2',3'-d']benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b']dithiophene (PS:DTBDT-C6), is used as the transistor channel material, dispensed poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the high-resistivity material for the printed resistors, and parylene as the capacitor dielectric. A pass band optimized for pulse-wave measurement (60 mHz to 36 Hz) is achieved with a maximum charge amplification of 1.6 V/nC. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed printed amplifier, a radial arterial pulsewave signal recorded with a printed piezoelectric poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) sensor was fed to it and the output was analyzed to quantify the similarity of the pulse-wave features calculated from the original signal and the amplifier output. The amplified signal contains all the essential features of a pulse wave, such as both systolic waves, the dicrotic notch, and diastolic wave, which enable the accurate derivation of the clinically relevant indices utilized in the evaluation of vascular health.

This paper reports on ways to better predict droplet ejection velocity of push-mode piezo inkjet technology by upgrading the conventional equivalent circuit model. Calculation results from the traditional model imply that the driving pulse width conditions without ink ejection only periodically exist in the pull-push piezo driving mode. However, ink ejection is actually observed under any pulse width condition. The displacement of the diaphragm with respect to the piezo element input voltage waveform was measured with a highly accurate capacitive displacement gauge to correct for the difference between the actual measurements and calculations. The equivalent circuit model was then modified so that the measured diaphragm residual oscillations could be expressed. We presumed that an actual inkjet printhead contains an effective spring oscillation component, effective actuator mass, and damping component larger than that used in conventional equivalent circuit model calculations. We demonstrated that the difference between the calculated results and actual measurements could be reduced. Modifications to equivalent circuit model are based on the addition of an effective mechanical spring oscillation component having the same function as the ink chamber compliance, an increase in actuator inertance corresponding to the mass of the actuator, and an effective resistance element expressing a damped oscillation.

Low-power, flexible, and properly encapsulated integrated circuits are the basic requirements of the solution-processed printed and wearable electronic prototypes for various emerging applications including display circuits, sensors, and radio-frequency identification tags. The organic field-effect transistor is one of the important types of devices used in such prototypes and its industrial applicability is essential for the printed electronics technology. The performance deterioration upon encapsulated through the thick layer of air-stable dielectric material such as amorphous fluoropolymer [CYTOP] - must be compensated by device engineering. In this work, we used furan and thiophene flanked diketopyrrolopyrrole donor-acceptor conjugated polymers namely PDPPF-DTT and PDPPT-DTT, and its comparative study was performed using Cytop as a dielectric material. The work advances interface engineering towards the single-gate and dual-gate organic transistors. Dual-gate transistors performance modulation using Cytop dielectric opens new research avenues towards stability enhancement of such transistors for real-world applications.

Tactile sensing, particularly the detection of object slippage, is required for skillful object handling by robotic grippers. The real-time measurement and identification of the dynamic shear forces that result from slippage events are crucial for slip detection and effective object interaction. In this study, a ferroelectric polymer-based printed soft sensor for object slippage detection was developed and fabricated by screen printing. The proposed sensor demonstrated a sensitivity of 8.2 μC·cm−2 and was responsive to shear forces applied in both the parallel and perpendicular directions. An amplifier circuit, based on a printed organic thin-film transistor, was applied and achieved a high sensitivity of 0.1 cm2/V·s. Therefore, this study experimentally demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed printable high-sensitivity tactile sensor, which could serve as part of a wearable robotic e-skin. The sensor could facilitate the production of a system to detect and prevent the slippage of objects from robotic grippers.

Formaldehyde is utilized for the preservation of materials due to its strong bactericidal effects. As formaldehyde is also a harmful substance that causes health hazards, the quantitative monitoring of formaldehyde in natural and living environments is desirable. For the rapid and easy detection of formaldehyde, in this study we applied an organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based sensor that can function as a potentiometric device for electrochemical measurements. A polyion-complex gel of formaldehyde dehydrogenase (FDH) and chitosan (CT) was constructed on a gold electrode. When the FDH/CT gel-coated electrode was connected to an OFET device it could detect formaldehyde in an aqueous solution, in which the amino groups of chitosan would protonate during the enzymatic reaction. The limit of detection was calculated to be 3.1 µM (93 ppb), demonstrating the applicability of the film-type OFET sensor to environmental monitoring.

A high-performance vertical-type organic transistor has been fabricated using bis(l,2,5-thiadiazolo)-p-quinobis(l,3-dithiole) (BTQBT) for the channel layer. The BTQBT molecules are oriented horizontally, with the molecular plane of each monolayer parallel to the substrate. The π–π stacking direction of the BTQBT molecules is aligned with the carrier transport direction in this vertical transistor. The modulated drain current density exceeded 1 A cm−2 upon the application of a gate voltage of less than 5 V. In addition, the device exhibits a high on/off current ratio of over 105.

The demonstration of the complementary integrated circuit using printing processes is indispensable for realizing electronic devices using organic thin film transistors. Although complementary integrated circuits have advantages such as low power consumption and a wide output voltage range, complementary integrated circuits fabricated by the printing method have problems regarding driving voltage and performance. Studies on fabrication processes of electronic circuits for printing technology, including optimization and simplification, are also important research topics. In this study, the fabrication process of the printed complementary integrated circuit was simplified by applying a p-type donor-acceptor (D-A) polymer semiconductor, which is not strongly affected by the electrode work function. An inverter circuit and the ring oscillator circuit were demonstrated using this process. The fabricated ring oscillator array showed excellent performance, with low voltage operation and low performance variation.

Dual-gate organic thin-film transistors (DGOTFTs), which exhibit better electrical properties, in terms of on-current and subthreshold slope than those of single-gate organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) are promising devices for high-performance and robust organic electronics. Electrical behaviors of high-voltage (>10 V) DGOTFTs have been studied: however, the performance analysis in low-voltage DGOTFTs has not been reported because fabrication of low-voltage DGOTFTs is generally challenging. Sensor devices that can be fabricated on a flexible plastic film produced at a low cost using inkjet-printing technology are suitable for point-of-care applications. An organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based biosensor can function as a potentiometric electrochemical sensor. To investigate the usefulness of an OFET-based biosensor, we demonstrated the detection of 1,5-anhydroglucitol (1,5-AG) and glucose, which are monosaccharides used as biomarkers of diabetes. An OFET-based biosensor combined with a Prussian blue (PB) electrode, modified with glucose oxidase (GOx) or pyranose oxidase (POx), was utilized for the detection of the monosaccharides. When the GOx- or POx-PB electrode was immersed in glucose solution at the determined concentration, shifts in the low-voltage direction of transfer characteristic curves of the OFET were observed to be dependent on the glucose concentrations in the range of 0–10 mM. For 1,5-AG, the curve shifts were observed only with the POx-PB electrode. Detection of glucose and 1,5-AG was achieved in a substrate-specific manner of the enzymes on the printed OFET-biosensor. Although further improvements are required in the detection concentration range, the plastic-filmOFET-biosensors will enable the measurement of not only diabetes biomarkers but also various other biomarkers.

There is an interest in sensors for the detection of odorant molecules in the gaseous phase, especially those related to the fragrance of fruits, because odorant sensing is useful for on-site quality control of agricultural products. Previously, gas-chromatographic methods requiring bench-top devices were used for odorant-molecule detection. Herein, we report an odorant sensor based on cyclodextrins (CDs) as a stable odorant receptor, using a highly mass-sensitive and quantitative 27-MHz quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) device, which has the advantage of possible incorporation into portable devices. When ethyl butyrate (a model odorant molecule for fruit fragrances) was flowed onto a QCM plate modified with α-, β-, or γ-CD network films, a decrease in frequency was observed (corresponding to an increase in mass), owing to the capture of odorant molecules by CD molecules. The CD films were capable of capturing and releasing odorant molecules, depending on the type of CD (α-, β-, or γ-CD). Thus, these sensors are reusable for odorant-molecule sensing, and are applicable to pattern recognition of odorant molecules. Thus, sensors based on CD films combined with a QCM handheld device could be applied to monitoring the condition of fruits.

We report on the memory characteristics of organic ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FeFETs) using spin-coated poly(vinylidene difluoride/trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF/TrFE)) as a gate insulating layer. By thermal annealing the P(VDF/TrFE) layer at temperatures above its melting point, we could significantly improve the on/off current ratio to over 104. Considerable changes in the surface morphology and x-ray diffraction patterns were also observed in the P(VDF/TrFE) layer as a result of the annealing process. The enhanced memory effect is attributed to large polarization effects caused by rearranged ferroelectric polymer chains and improved crystallinity in the organic semiconductor layer of the FeFET devices.

Herein, we report on the fabrication of an extended-gated organic field-effect transistor (OFET)-based immunosensor and its application in the detection of human chromogranin A (hCgA). The fabricated OFET device possesses an extended-gate electrode immobilized with an anti-CgA antibody. The titration results of hCgA showed that the electrical changes in the OFET characteristics corresponded to the glycoprotein recognition ability of the monoclonal antibody (anti-CgA). The observed sensitivity (detection limit: 0.11 µg/mL) and selectivity indicate that the OFET-based immunosensor can be potentially applied to the rapid detection of the glycoprotein concentration without any labeling.
