Earthworms are one of the most important components of temperate ecosystems and groups of soil animals globally, but data on their distribution around the world are still incomplete and uneven. Northern Eurasia is a region for which available data on earthworm distribution is extremely poor. At the same time, generations of Soviet and Russian researchers have performed extensive research and accumulated a large amount of data on the distribution of earthworms in this vast region. Most of this information was published in Russian, not digitised and, therefore, hardly accessible to researchers. Our dataset fills this gap and provides occurrence data extracted from 159 literature sources in Russian published between 1868 and 2022. The dataset contains 5,304 occurrences of 109 species and 14 subspecies. The collected data cover the territory of 27 countries.The dataset extends the data available through GBIF.org on earthworm distribution in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. For Transcaucasia and Central Asia countries, our resource has become the main GBIF source on earthworm diversity distribution. On a global scale, our dataset contributes to filling gaps in biodiversity, which facilitates more accurate estimates of the response of biodiversity to global climate change as well as the spreading of invasive species.

The article describes the repair of mandrels used on a continuous type PQF mill by using adapters made from billets. The starting materials are the tailstocks that have been taken out of service.The process of repairing the mandrels allows the mandrel to be used in further work until the final regrinding to the last size range of the mandrel diameter.The technological process of repair begins with turning the surface of the mandrel to the required size, grinding the surface, the process of cutting off the rear part of the mandrel, including the threaded connection. After the tailstock part has been cut off, the tailstock section is replaced with a transition piece manufactured in‑house. The adapter is a part with a fine tapered thread on one side, which is intended for connection to the mandrel, and with an internal thread on the other side, which serves to connect the rear part of the mandrel to the tailstock.The provided technology will reduce the cost of purchasing new replacement tools by increasing the life cycle of the mandrel, and will reduce the number of mandrels that have become unusable by restoring the tailstock part.

ABSTRACT Acinetobacter baumannii is a leading cause of multidrug-resistant bacterial infections worldwide, and the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) is a major virulence determinant. A previous study of A. baumannii from intubated and asymptomatic patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam revealed multiple lineages with diverse antibiotic resistance profiles and CPS biosynthesis loci. Here, we show that 48_n, an asymptomatic nasal carriage isolate belonging to ST142, is extensively antibiotic resistant and carries acquired resistance determinants accounting for the resistance profile. 48_n carries the novel KL71 CPS biosynthesis locus in the chromosome. The structure of the CPS produced by 48_n was established using 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, including two-dimensional 1Н,1Н COSY, 1Н,1Н TOCSY, 1Н,1Н ROESY, 1Н,13C HSQC, and 1Н,13C HMBC experiments, and confirmed by Smith degradation. Consistent with the genetic content of KL71, the K71 CPS was found to be made up of octasaccharide K units containing six l-rhamnose residues and one residue each of N-acetyl-d-glucosamine and d-glucuronic acid. K71 CPS was branched and closely related to the K74 CPS produced by BAL_309, an antibiotic susceptible ST142 isolate recovered from an intubated patient in the same ICU 7 years later. K71 and K74 differ only in the linkage between K units, and this is due to the replacement of a single gene at the K locus that codes for the Wzy polymerase.IMPORTANCEThe majority of Acinetobacter baumannii genomes sequenced and analyzed to develop an understanding of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) isolates belong to the globally disseminated CC2 clonal complex. While XDR isolates belonging to rarer lineages are often unexplored, detailed analyses could provide novel insights into the spread of resistance, as well as cell surface features such as the CPS that determine the specificity of non-antibiotic therapeutics required to treat XDR infections that resist antimicrobial chemotherapy. Here, we describe the properties of an XDR asymptomatic nasal carriage isolate recovered in Vietnam that belongs to ST142, a rarely encountered sequence type. We report the resistance profile and correlate this with detected resistance determinants. We also solve the structure of the CPS and reveal its relationship with CPS produced by other A. baumannii isolates.

The head of the Department of Human Anatomy, Operative Surgery and Forensic Medicine of Irkutsk State Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Tamara Ismailovna Shalina turned 70 years old. Tamara Ismailovna was born on May 5, 1954 in Cherkessk, Stavropol Territory. After graduating from school, she entered medical school and graduated with honors in 1975. Having worked as a paramedic in a medical and physical education clinic and in an anti-tuberculosis clinic, she realized that medicine was her calling and that she was most interested in preventive medicine and scientific research. Therefore, she decided to continue her studies and in 1979 she entered the sanitary and hygienic faculty of the Irkutsk State Medical Institute. After graduating from the institute in 1985, she was invited to the Department of Human Anatomy as an assistant, where she works to the present day.Teams of the departments of human anatomy, operative surgery and forensic medicine, histology, embryology, cytology, normal physiology, university staff and students warmly congratulate Tamara Ismailovna on her 70th birthday, wishing her good health, family well-being and further achievements in her career.

ABSTRACT The carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii isolate BAL062 is a clinical reference isolate used in several recent experimental studies. It is from a ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) patient in an intensive care unit at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in 2009. Here, BAL062 was found to belong to the B sub-lineage of global clone 2 (GC2) isolates in the previously reported outbreak (2008 and 2012) of carbapenem-resistant VAP A. baumannii at the HTD. While related sub-lineage B outbreak isolates were extensively antibiotic-resistant and carry GC2-associated genomic resistance islands, AbGRI1, AbGRI2, and AbGRI3, BAL062 has lost AbGRI3 and three aminoglycoside resistance genes, armA, aacA4, and aphA1, leading to amikacin, tobramycin and kanamycin susceptibility. The location of Tn2008VAR found in the chromosome of this sub-lineage was also corrected. Like many of the outbreak isolates, BAL062 carries the KL58 gene cluster at the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) synthesis locus and an annotation key is provided. As information about K type is important for the development of novel CPS-targeting therapies, the BAL062 K58-type CPS structure was established using NMR spectroscopy. It is most closely related to K2 and K93, sharing similar configurations and linkages between K units, and contains the rare higher monosaccharide, 5,7-diacetamido-3,5,7,9-tetradeoxy-d-glycero-l-manno-non-2-ulosonic acid (5,7-di-N-acetyl-8-epipseudaminic acid; 8ePse5Ac7Ac), the 8-epimer of Pse5Ac7Ac (5,7-di-N-acetylpseudaminic acid). Inspection of publicly available A. baumannii genomes revealed a wide distribution of the KL58 locus in geographically diverse isolates belonging to several sequence types that were recovered over two decades from clinical, animal, and environmental sources.IMPORTANCEMany published experimental studies aimed at developing a clearer understanding of the pathogenicity of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii strains currently causing treatment failure due to extensive antibiotic resistance are undertaken using historic, laboratory-adapted isolates. However, it is ideal if not imperative that recent clinical isolates are used in such studies. The clinical reference isolate characterized here belongs to the dominant A. baumannii GC2 clone causing extensively resistant infections and has been used in various recent studies. The correlation of resistance profiles and resistance gene data is key to identifying genes available for gene knockout and complementation analyses, and we have mapped the antibiotic resistance genes to find candidates. Novel therapies, such as bacteriophage or monoclonal antibody therapies, currently under investigation as alternatives or adjuncts to antibiotic treatment to combat difficult-to-treat CRAb infections often exhibit specificity for specific structural epitopes of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS), the outer-most polysaccharide layer. Here, we have solved the structure of the CPS type found in BAL062 and other extensively resistant isolates. As consistent gene naming and annotation are important for locus identification and interpretation of experimental studies, we also have correlated automatic annotations to the standard gene names.

Fiber mode-locked lasers are nonlinear optical systems that provide ultrashort pulses at high repetition rates. However, adjusting the cavity parameters is often a challenging task due to the intrinsic multistability of a laser system. Depending on the adjustment of the cavity parameters, the optical output may vary significantly, including Q-switching, single and multipulse, and harmonic mode-locked regimes. In this study, we demonstrate an experimental implementation of the Soft Actor–Critic algorithm for generating a harmonic mode-locked regime inside a state-of-the-art fiber laser with an ion-gated nanotube saturable absorber. The algorithm employs nontrivial strategies to achieve a guaranteed harmonic mode-locked regime with the highest order by effectively managing the pumping power of a laser system and the nonlinear transmission of a nanotube absorber. Our results demonstrate a robust and feasible machine-learning–based approach toward an automatic system for adjusting nonlinear optical systems with the presence of multistability phenomena.

Sugar beet pulp is a byproduct of white sugar production, and it is quite significant in terms of volume. Every year, tens of millions of tons of beet pulp are produced around the world. However, only a fraction of it is currently used, mainly as animal feed. The composition of beet pulp includes plant polysaccharides, such as cellulose, arabinan, and pectin. Through the process of enzymatic hydrolysis, these polysaccharides are converted into technical C6/C5 sugars, which can be further used as a substrate for the microbial synthesis of various substances, including biofuels, organic acids, and other green chemistry molecules. The current study was designed with a primary objective that focused on the development of a strain that had the potential for enhanced productivity and the capacity to produce enzymes suitable for beet pulp hydrolysis. The pelA and abfA genes, which encode pectin lyase and arabinofuranosidase, respectively, in the fungus Penicillium canescens (VKPM F-178), were cloned and successfully expressed in the recipient strain Penicillium verruculosum B1-537 (VKPM F-3972D). New recombinant strains were created using the expression system of the mycelial fungus P. verruculosum B1-537, which is capable of simultaneously producing pectin lyase and arabinofuranosidase, as well as homologous cellulases. The screening of strains for increased enzymatic activity towards citrus pectin, sugar beet branched arabinan, and microcrystalline cellulose revealed that a B4 clone of P. verruculosum exhibited the greatest potential in sugar beet pulp cake hydrolysis. This clone was selected as the basis for the creation of a new enzyme preparation with enhanced pectin lyase, arabinase, and cellulase activities. The component composition of the enzyme preparation was determined, and the results indicated that the enzyme content comprised approximately 11% pectin lyase, 40% arabinofuranosidase, and 40% cellulases. The primary products of the enzymatic hydrolysis of the unpretreated beet pulp cake were arabinose and glucose. The degree of arabinan and cellulose conversion was observed to be up to 50% and 80%, respectively, after a period of 48 to 72 h of hydrolysis. The new B4 preparation was observed to be highly efficacious in the hydrolysis of beet cake at elevated concentrations of solids (up to 300 g/L) within the reaction mixture. The newly developed strain, as a producer of pectin lyase, arabinofuranosidase, and cellulase complexes, has the potential to be utilized for the bioconversion of sugar beet processing wastes and for the efficient generation of highly concentrated solutions of technical sugars for further implementation in processes of microbial synthesis.

Introduction. The article discusses the results of a study of ash layers from Holocene deposits at the Selungur (Surungur) Cave. Goals. So, the work attempts a practical evaluation of a method of identifying coprostanols in archaeological sediments. The investigation of Holocene deposits of the site was carried out in 2018 and 2021 field seasons. The study identifies a total of 7 Holocene layers that represent the typical ‘fumier’ facies of cave and rock shelter deposits connected to pastoralism and animal husbandry practices, and built up of stratified layers of burnt herbivore dung. The sequence contains a record of multiple earthquakes that disturbed the sediments and effected in water escape structures, plastic deformations, and faults. Nevertheless, the stratigraphy remains easily readable. Unfortunately, archaeological and paleofaunistic materials were never found but a series of ash-containing interlayers suggests that the cave was repeatedly visited by ancient humans. Materials. In the ash deposits, our micro charcoal analysis has identified areas of concentration of burnt dungs which was used for fire. Series of samples were taken throughout the section of Holocene deposits for gas mass spectrometry analysis. The research efforts have also included the analysis of modern dung from herbivores inhabiting the area, such as cows, sheep, goats, horses and donkeys, for the latter obtained data to serve as a reference collection. Results. Unfortunately, layer 7 of the Selungur Cave proved characterized by poor preservation of fire products, while layers 6–1 yielded somewhat rich data. The obtained results make it possible to identify coprosterols and determine that equine dung was used in layers 6-2 as a fuel, and goat dung — in the first layer. The most widespread distribution of equines in this region occurred during the existence of Dayuan (Parkan) state, in the third century BC and later in the Middle Ages. Most likely, during these periods the mountain corridor comprising the Selungur Cave could have been used as a pass of the Silk Road that connected the Fergana and Alay valleys. The accumulation of the upper layer, in our opinion, is associated with the modern era.
