The Southeastern Geographer has long been recognized within geography as one of the most respected regional journals. Unfortunately, those outside our discipline tended to view the journal as parochial due to its regional focus. This work presents recent digital readership data for the Southeastern Geographer which shows that 43% of readership is outside our region, and more than 13% of readership is international. The data also indicate that the Southeastern Geographer is widely read outside our discipline as well. Author experience is shared which suggests that the regional nature of the Southeastern Geographer increases reader engagement and papers appearing in the journal are more widely read than more specialized publications. We conclude that the Southeastern Geographer should be considered a model for modern scientific communication and make a case that efforts to marginalize the journal as regional are misplaced. In observance of having worked for going on five decades in the health promotion profession, this editorial shares fifty observations about the state of our field. In part one, I offer these first twenty five observations that focus on societal trends that have shifted how we frame our work and the movement from wellness to well-being. I reflect on why the wellness term fell out of favor, the roots of the well-being term and attendant definitions of health promotion. Seminal professional text books, popular readership books and key studies that have informed the health promotion discipline are reviewed. Responding to a challenge raised by Douglas Robinson in the conclusion of his book Translationality (2017: 200–202), the recently launched EPISTRAN project1 uses concepts, methods and theories from Translation Studies to investigate the semiotic processes (verbal and nonverbal) involved in the transfer of information between different 'epistemic systems'. This paper, produced under its auspices, analyses a popular science article from the National Geographic magazine as an instance of inter-epistemic translation. Taking as its source text a research article previously published in the scientific journal Child Psychology, it compares the two with a view to determining the strategies used by the author to re-package the research for a new readership. It concludes that these are no different, in essence, to those employed in conventional interlingual translation, and argues that consideration of the processes involved can shed light not only on the 'operating norms' at work in the production of popular science but also on the construction of (specialised and non-specialised) discourses more broadly. To provide a dynamic perspective on the evolution of Mendeley readership, this study conducts an 8‐year longitudinal analysis of approximately 3.4 million scholarly papers published in 2015. Mendeley readership data were collected annually from 2016 to 2023 for the sampled papers to analyze the temporal accumulation patterns of readership following publication. The results indicate that Mendeley readership exhibits a speed advantage compared to citations and a prevalence advantage compared to Twitter mentions, demonstrating both initial prevalence and sustained growth on a yearly basis. However, the patterns of accumulation vary across disciplines, with papers in Biomedical and Health Sciences showing the fastest accrual of extensive Mendeley readership data. Leveraging demographic data provided by Mendeley, this study further investigates how different user groups—categorized by academic status, disciplinary affiliation, and geographic location—engage with papers across various disciplines. The findings highlight Mendeley readership as a rapid and substantial altmetric, yet they also emphasize the need to interpret the nature of the attention captured by Mendeley readership with caution, considering its potential biases introduced by the varying engagement levels of different user groups across disciplines. Following the publication of a first instalment of the 39 Work Books of M. Masud R. Khan in November 2022 and the recent donation to the Freud Museum London of the full original correspondence between Khan and Wladimir Granoff, and between Khan and Victor Smirnoff, this essay serves the dual purpose of ensuring that Khan's memory is being kept alive and informing its readership of the newly available archival documents. It briefly retraces the history of Khan's conflicts with the British Psychoanalytical Society up to the destruction, in July 2019, of the Khan archives that were in the possession of the International Psychoanalytical Association. In addition, the author recounts how he came into possession of the letters Khan exchanged with Granoff and Smirnoff, and why it was decided to establish a Khan archive at the Freud Museum London. The prospect of this new archive being supplemented with the letters from Khan to his second wife, Svetlana Beriosova, and a full copy of the Work Books is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the collections and accessibility of parish libraries in early modern England and the subjects in which their readers were most interested. The period covered begins with the 1558 accession of Elizabeth I, which preceded by only a few years the establishment of the first post-Reformation parish library, and ends with the Parochial Libraries Act of 1709, which ensured that libraries could not be dismantled and dispersed without permission from the appropriate authorities. This article argues that parish libraries were established in this period to provide people of gentry rank and below with a religious education and that, despite previous historians' arguments to the contrary, the works in these collections were appropriate to the intended audience. It further contends that despite physical access restrictions imposed on these libraries by their founders, their books were read, and that readers' interests focused on four themes that were central to early modern Protestantism. This article asks the question "Why did Plato not write the 'unwritten doctrine'?" and answers it by citing a combination of two obstacles. The first derives from the limitations of the episteme available to an embodied soul about the essence of the good. Even if the dialectician has access to some kind of knowledge, the mismatch between the unchanging essence of the good and the precarious logoi which aim to identify it (and allow others some measure of access to it) can never fully be overcome. At best, Socrates (or Plato) can lead souls to an incomplete account of it: It is possible that even the most expert dialectician can only have a claim to knowledge, but no absolute certainty. Another obstacle lies in the audience or readership itself: No shortcut to understanding is possible, and yet a mere written presentation, which is all they have, is just such a shortcut, and so represents an empty promise. Following criticism about the quality of writing in management communication and organization studies, this Forum presents arguments for change in how scholarly knowledge is communicated. The expectation today seems to be that, to get published, academic writing requires monologic and complex ways of expression. However, using formulaic and reader-exclusive language in publications limits their accessibility to a wider readership, including not only more diverse members of the disciplinary community—such as non-Anglophone scholars and junior researchers—but also those we study and write about. In our respective contributions, we argue for more meaningful communication between writers and readers achieved through writers adopting reflexive practices when crafting their texts for publication. Specifically, we suggest considering reflexivity through the following concepts: conformity and individuality, socialization, tenderness, and respect. In translation training, translation revision to produce a high quality translation is an integral part of the translation process. Improvement on the translations produced by students during training are typically carried out by students themselves in the form of self-revision. The present empirical study aims to assess the improvement of student translations’ quality in light of target readership assessment and feedback. It further sets out to measure student’s attitudes towards target readership feedback in terms of effectiveness in assisting them to improve their translations. The findings reveal that target readership feedback had a considerable effect on improving the quality of student translations which made them more vigilant to analyzing target text context. Moreover, student translators perceived target readership feedback as valuable in improving their self-revised translations to enhance the quality of their translations. In this rumination on academic writing otherwise, after Taylor and Benozzo, I address a number of important issues they raise. These include notions such as the academic-writing-machine, authorship, writership, and postauthorship. Throughout the article, I compare and contrast their views with examples from a variety of sources including some of my own articles. In this study, I examine the Facebook activity of all Hungarian-language daily newspapers in Transylvania realized in the first half of 2017. I will examine the sharing strategies used by each editorial office and the specificities of the readership that responded to the posts. I will attempt to explain my network observation that the overlapping of the representation networks (which user reacting to which post) from each newspaper’s Facebook page as a single large network is a good approximation to the spatial location of the newspaper’s localities. Until recently, Palestinian nonviolent resistance has historically been overshadowed by the narrative of armed and violent resistance. This article contends that the reality of Palestinian resistance is relatively nonviolent and explores alternative nonviolent approaches drawing on Sahar Khalifeh's novel Wild Thorns. Originally published in 1976 and translated into English in 1985, Khalifeh's novel serves as a blueprint for nonviolent resistance, emphasizing empathy. This research demonstrates how interethnic connections between antagonistic groups, particularly in workplace settings, can mitigate violence by humanizing the face of the perceived enemy. Through documenting the violence of imperial imposition and scrutinizing the means by which a nation can resist its occupier nonviolently, Khalifeh creates a readership that is ready to empathize by acknowledging the trauma experienced by the Other. The article analyzes the correspondence between L. N. Tolstoy and M. N. Katkov, which has not yet been studied and commented on in detail in science. The author of the article consistently presents the history of interaction between correspondents, reveals the context of the correspondence, and shows the difficulties that arose during communication and their reasons. There is a difference in the worldview andcharacters of the writer andthe publisher; however, several factors particularly attracted Tolstoy to Katkov and his publications in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The article states a certain conditional dependence of the writer on the editor and comprehends the possible influence of Katkov’s newspaper and journal on Tolstoy in different periods. For Tolstoy, Katkov, throughout the entire period of their communication, continued to remain the most public person, a leader and at the same time serving the public, but Tolstoy needed his work and capabilities precisely to communicate with a wide audience.

The use of pronouns shows the author’s intention to address the reading public or the presence of the target readership in texts. This paper focuses on second-person pronouns, which are especially revealing of the author`s desire to engage the reader by endowing on them an active role in the negotiation and construction of knowledge. For the same reason, we will also analyse the use of the word reader. Science writing is thus understood as a dialogue between the two groups of participants involved in knowledge creation. Two usages of you have been detected in previous works using the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC): general and dialogic. The former might be interpreted as a generic “one,” “everybody;” the latter, considered as an in-group strategy that embraces both the writer and the reader. The detailed analysis of the pragmatics of the second-person pronouns and reader in Corpus of English Chemistry Texts (CEChET) and Late Modern English Medical Texts (LMEMT) will hopefully shed some light on the object-centred nature of scientific writing. The first proof of the transcendence of π by Ferdinand Lindemann in 1882 prompted the publication of a wave of further proofs, all attempting to elucidate, simplify, or generalize this epoch-making result. Modifications by the likes of Weierstrass, Gordan, and Hilbert all entered the literature. But one such proof sank without a trace and was almost completely ignored. This is surprising as, not only did it appear in a major journal with a large international readership, but it was also written by one of the most famous mathematicians of the time—James Joseph Sylvester. This article examines the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on authorship and readership. It draws on the perspectives of Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault, who argue that the presence of an author restricts the interpretation of a text. The rise of generative AI, which can create texts without human authors, raises questions about the role of the reader and the motivations for engaging with texts. While AI-generated texts may be suitable for informational purposes, literary works are often read with expectations shaped by the identity of the author. The article also considers the value of AI-generated texts in comparison to authentic works and the potential for critical analysis. It explores the potential of generative AI to produce literary works and the implications for the role of the author. It questions whether AI can truly be original and innovative in its creations, and whether readers would be interested in AI-generated works. The article also discusses the importance of human curation and the role of editors in selecting and shaping AI-generated texts. It raises concerns about the potential for AI-generated works to create literary isolation and limit diversity in reading experiences. This article reads Clarice Lispector's short story "A menor mulher do mundo" in dialogue with decolonial anthropological thought and performance studies to explore the role literature might play in unsettling the colonial paradigm of ethnographic knowledge. I propose that Lispector's text simultaneously hails its reader as a discoverer or ethnographer and undermines the epistemological privilege of this position. Beyond recriminating the reader for their implication in violent othering practices, the text points to the performative nature of what Dianna Taylor calls the "scenario of discovery," revealing discoverer and discovered, ethnographer and native informant to be roles rather than essential identities. Lispector thus questions the unidirectionality of the colonialist gaze and asserts that its "object" not only looks back with its own desires but also makes faces to disarm this fetishizing gaze. The stakes of this reading extend to debates about World Literature and Lispector's place in it, suggesting that the performative capacities of literary language have an important role to play in governing, even checking, the consumption, assimilation, and canonization of literature from the formally colonized world. This paper attempts to interpret Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as an example of the classical motif of the 'katabasis' or descent into the Underworld, a descensus ad Inferos sui generis, conditioned by having its origin as a fairy tale intended for the entertainment of a child reader (descensus ad Terram Mirabilem): this tale would have as its matrix reference the similar vicissitude of Psyche in the 'tale of the marriage of Cupid and Psyche' from the Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass by the Roman author Apuleius. This paper examines the sources and literary function of references to the ancient Greeks and Romans in the Japanese author Natsume Sōseki's first novel, I am a Cat, written and published from 1905 to 1907. It places Sōseki and his work in the context of Meiji Japan and its renewed engagement with the West. The paper shows how Sōseki was uniquely placed to reflect on this engagement, particularly its intellectual and literary aspects. Despite his personal familiarity with Greek and Roman materials as demonstrated in his scholarly works and notes, the references in his novel are mediated, drawn primarily from other (mainly English) texts rather than ancient sources. This reflects the most common manner of encountering this material for Sōseki's contemporary readership and therefore sheds some light on the diffusion of Greek and Roman material among the 'educated elite'. The paper further demonstrates that Sōseki's use of this material has literary and thematic point: it contributes to his satire of the emerging class of intellectuals in the Meiji period by critiquing the social weaponization of such knowledge, especially in instances where it is not backed by true understanding. The mediated nature of the Greek and Roman material in the novel also raises questions about the efficacy of language as a means of communication as it contributes to the destabilization of meaning. This project examines news coverage of public opinion polls and explores whether journalists and readers are familiar with best practices in this domain. Study 1 tests the effects of related errors on readers' perceptions, and Study 2 asks journalists to reflect upon this kind of coverage. Readers (N = 495) only noticed errors when they were very frequent, and many did not assess stories differently based on the presence of errors. Journalists (N = 51) acknowledged that this coverage often contains errors, and many identified individual and structural causes. Taken together, this suggests the need for additional training in polling and numeracy for journalists and audiences. Such efforts could improve news articles about public opinion polls, as well as readers' ability to recognize and seek out stronger coverage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article offers an investigation of Foucault's Confessions of the Flesh —published in 2018, thirty-four years after the death of the author—through a literary approach. It argues that "The Laborious Baptism," the second section of the first chapter of the book, "The Formation of a New Experience," has an immersive quality of writing that signals a way of writing "from within," to take up an expression coined by Emerson. By putting Foucault in conversation with James Bernauer, Willemien Otten, Philippe Büttgen, and Pierre Macherey, among others, this article aims to show that Foucault's Confessions of the Flesh may best be seen, in a final analysis, as a confessio fidei in the flesh. It owns, at some point, a mystical quality so that the book truly offers a peculiar experience to its readership. In the first part of the article, we make some metaliterary comments about the potential pitfalls of dealing with a posthumous book, helped by T. S. Eliot and Nietzsche. In the second part, we delve into "The Laborious Baptism" by making a close reading of it. In concluding remarks, we reflect on how Confessions of the Flesh may display a form of Christian parrhesia under the sign of risk-taking in keeping with Foucault's ultima verba as a professor in his very last lecture at the Collège de France. In previous writings, the author discussed the extracurricular possibilities for fostering readership and some methodological characteristics to achieve positive results. This article presents the issue through the experience connected to a reading competition. Among the well-known methods for promoting readership, the approach of reading competitions is particularly appealing to children for several reasons. Firstly, children enjoy activities outside the school setting; they appreciate the opportunity to venture beyond the familiar school environment. Additionally, the voluntary nature of these activities is a key factor. Secondly, competition and rivalry are popular forms of utilizing and applying academic knowledge among students, especially when they can participate in teams. The reading competition is capable of satisfying both of these preferences. This paper argues that the Indian graphic novelist Sarnath Banerjee's works evidence a well-imagined 'ideal reader'. We contend that the process of ascertaining Banerjee's ideal reader will allow us to appreciate his craft better while examining his creative politics. The paper attempts to delineate such a reader mainly based on substantiation from the texts. It uses supporting material from Banerjee's interviews and readers' responses from discussion platforms and reviews. It examines the choices made by Banerjee in the course of the creation of his work in terms of medium and format, language, complexity of form, subject matter, and age to demarcate his readership. In recent decades, it has become clear that John Donne's seventeenth-century readership is larger and more varied than was once believed. One audience that has not been given much scholarly attention, however, is English puritans on both sides of the Atlantic. This article brings to light several possible avenues for the transmission of Donne's works to these readers and then identifies explicit references and poetic allusions to Donne by writers of these theological and ecclesiastical persuasions. This essay examines the role that isolari (books of islands) played in networks of information exchange and diplomacy at the interface of the Venetian and Ottoman Empires, focusing on Tommaso Porcacchi's L'isole più famose del mondo , first published in 1572 and updated in 1576 in response to shifting political realities in the Mediterranean. The book found a key readership among diplomatic travelers, as this essay will show by documenting how one such traveler – Livio Cellini – drew from Porcacchi's isolario directly (without acknowledging his source) in his account of the Venetian diplomatic mission he accompanied to Istanbul in 1582. The aim of this article is to present the main characteristics of the development of medical literature in the Western world from the 12th century onwards, in relation to the intellectual context of its production and the social conditions of its reception and reading. By connecting the theoretical and practical dimensions of the discipline with the materiality of manuscript books, and the cultural context of the writings to the expectations of the medical readership, this article aims to highlight the great diversity of this literature. Written in universities, but increasingly in the court milieux and the urban world, these texts primarily aimed at students and colleagues to help them in learning and practice, but also at a wider public concerned about its health. This study investigates the publication and reception of the Latin American boom literature in Sweden from 1960 to 1990, focusing on Julio Cortázar, Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. It analyses the extent of Swedish translations of their works and the type and amount of attention they received in the Swedish press. Using a bibliometric approach for the translations, and analysing press material on the authors from the evening papers Aftonbladet and Expressen, the study found that 258 of the 532 works translated from Spanish to Swedish during the investigated period were Latin American, with 52 (20%) by the feautured authors. The press material reveals that García Márquez was the most covered, especially around his 1982 Nobel Prize, and the assessment of his literature and public persona was generally positive. Fuentes received significant attention in the 1980s and was also favourably regarded. Vargas Llosa was introduced early on to the Swedish readership, but his literary work and political engagement elicited mixed reactions. In this annual report, we present readership trends and authorship metrics of the Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER) in 2023. J-PEER published two issues in volume 13 comprising 15 articles. These articles covered a variety of topics including student-focused participation, outcomes, and practices and teacher-focused instruments and professional development, among other topics.
