Abstract

ErSi1.7 layers with high crystalline quality were produced by 90 keV Er ion implantation employing channeled implantation. The perpendicular and parallel elastic strain of the heteroepitaxial erbium silicide layers were obtained with symmetric and asymmetric x-ray reflections utilizing a double-crystal x-ray diffractometer. The quasipseudomorphic growth of the epilayer and the stiffness along a and c axes of epilayer were deduced from the x-ray diffraction.

Abstract

Heteroepitaxial ternary Co(sub x)Y(sub 1-x)Si(sub 1.7) silicide (x > 0.27) were constructed by Co implantation into YSi1.7/Si(111). Rutherford backscattering (RBS)/channeling was able to confirm that this silicide is hexagonal and that its azimuthal orientation is CoYSi1.7(0001)//Si(111) and CoYSi1.7(1120)//Si(110). Also, the lattice constants of the ternary silicide were determined by RBS/channeling and x-ray diffraction.

Abstract

[sup 59]Co nuclear magnetic resonance has been used to study the formation of Co nanoclusters in several series of thin-film Ag[sub 1-x]Co[sub x] alloys (0.08<=x<=0.4) prepared by coevaporation and subjected to different heat treatments. Co particles originally formed during the deposition process were found to be single-domain fcc Co clusters, having the shape of truncated octahedra of about 4.5 nm in diameter. Annealing at 200 °C resulted in a size increase to about 7 nm, but after annealing at 350 °C, the particles grew to about 26 nm while remaining single magnetic domain. Upon further annealing, the onset of large, multidomain Co clusters is evidenced. The Co concentration in the original alloy influenced the density of Co particles, but not their size, which was essentially determined by the annealing conditions. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Ion beam is used to synthesize heteroepitaxial Co(x)Ni(1-x)Si2 layers with good crystalline quality. A ternary silicide layer with an x value of 0.66 exhibits a 11% type B and 89% type A orientation. Transmission electron microscope reveals that the Type B component is found at the interfaces and with a thickness consisting of a few monolayers. The unique distribution of the type B component in the epilayer is attributed to its small strain size, as observed from X-ray diffraction studies.

Abstract

It has already been established that, by using a resonant detector in Mossbauer spectroscopy, the minimum spectral linewidth is 1.46Gamma. Here Gamma is the linewidth of the Mossbauer excited-state nuclear level. It is well known that the minimum linewidth obtained in conventional Mossbauer experiments is 2Gamma. The quantum mechanical calculation using a nuclear-resonant detector, which predicts this result, is summarized. The fundamental equations describing the system are solved in the frequency domain and applied to the experimental results. The experimental results using the resonant-detector Mossbauer technique and an Sn-doped SiO2 sample are presented. The best fit to the data is obtained using the resonant-detector quantum mechanical theory.

Abstract

Solid He-4 targets were prepared by implantation of He ions of various energies into thin Al foils. The targets were tested using the proton Rutherford backscattering (RBS) technique. The rests showed that a considerable amount of the implanted He atoms stays in the host foils for a long time after the implantation. A possibility of using the He-implanted targets in experiments with radioactive beams is demonstrated. Further steps to increase He amount in the implanted targets are discussed.
