To explore whether rs2073244 at PAX9 increased susceptibility for full-term low birth weight infants and whether indoors passive smoking exposure has a combined effect with rs2073244 on newborn low birth weight (LBW), a 1:2 paired case–control study of LBW newborns was conducted at Xiamen University Affiliated Women and Children’s Hospital from March 2010 to October 2013. The rate of indoor passive smoking exposure in the LBW group was higher than it in the NBW group (p = 0.019). GG of PAX9 rs2073244 decreased the risk of LBW [OR = 0.38, 95% CI: (0.15-0.98)] and smaller HC [OR = 0.44, 95% CI:(0.20-0.98)]. The relative excess risk for LBW contributed by the additive interaction between the rs2073244 risk genotypes AG/AA and mother pregnancy passive smoking exposure was 10.679 (95%CI 1.728–65.975). Aim Methods Results Conclusion Although vitamin D deficiency in smokers has a greater risk of low birth weight than vitamin D deficiency or smoking alone, there is no study searching birth weight in vitamin D deficient passive smokers. We evaluated the effect of vitamin D deficiency on birth weight in active and passive smokers. Additionally, we aimed to determine the predictive role of vitamin D for low birth weight in smokers.The study was designed as a retrospective case control study. A total of 210 participants were divided into three groups: active smoking (n = 34), passive smoking (n = 79), and non‐smokers (n = 97). Then passive smokers were divided into two subgroups as vitamin D ≥ 20 ng/mL (n = 23) and vitamin D < 20 ng/mL (n = 56). Sociodemographic, laboratory, and perinatal characteristics were recorded and compared between groups.Birth weight was higher in non‐smokers as compared to active (p < 0.001) and passive (p = 0.001) smokers, and also in passive than active smokers (p = 0.023). In passive smokers, birth weight was lower in vitamin D < 20 ng/mL group (p < 0.001). Vitamin D were correlated with birth weight in all smokers (r = 0.653, p < 0.001), passive (r = 0.624, p < 0.001) and active smokers (r = 0.526, p = 0.001). Vitamin D ≤ 14 ng/mL predicted low birth weight with 100% sensitivity and 53.92% specificity in smokers (area under curve [AUC] = 0.773, p < 0.001), with 100% sensitivity and 63.5% specificity in passive smokers (AUC = 0.759, p < 0.001) while vitamin D ≤ 11 ng/mL predicted with 83.33% sensitivity and 71.43% specificity in active smokers (AUC = 0.774, p = 0.008).Vitamin D deficiency in smokers is associated with low birth weight. Although vitamin D supplementation is not routinely recommended in pregnant women, we suggest that it could be an option in preventing low birth weight in smokers, even passive ones, who do not have adequate dietary intake and have insufficient exposure to daylight. Background: Chronic respiratory diseases are becoming a more prominent cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Street sweepers are commonly found in low- and middle-income countries. This job involves outdoor work that exposes workers to various health hazards and air pollution, particularly affecting respiratory health. There is still limited research focusing specifically on street sweepers. The study aims to examine the prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms and the associated factors in street sweepers in Bangkok, Thailand. Materials and Methods: We undertook a cross-sectional survey between February and April 2023. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed, stratifying the sample according to district locations within Bangkok, Thailand. Data were collected through a questionnaire assessing demographic characteristics, occupational and environmental factors, and respiratory symptoms using a modified version of the Medical Research Council questionnaire. Data analysis included bivariate analysis and multiple logistic regression. Results: The response rate was 98.0% (n = 341). The prevalence of chronic respiratory symptoms among street sweepers in Bangkok, Thailand, with at least one respiratory symptom was reported by 33.7% of the participants, specifically cough (22%), phlegm (20.2%), dyspnea (17.6%), and wheeze (7.0%). The average age of the sample group was 43.2 years, with a majority being female (85.9%). Among the participants, 88.3% were non-smokers, while 37.2% reported exposure to secondhand smoke. All participants reported the use of respiratory protective equipment, with face masks used at 78.9%. 7.3% of the participants lived near sources of pollution, and 12.0% were involved in household pollution activities. An average annual air quality index in the workplace area was categorized as 'good' at 57.8%. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed significant associations of chronic respiratory symptoms with the following factors: exposure to secondhand smoke [odds ratio (OR) = 2.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.3-4.2] and household activities (OR = 3.0, 95% CI 1.3-6.6). Conclusion: Exposure to secondhand smoke and indoor air pollutants in household environments are significant factors associated with the symptoms. We evaluated the association between smoking and diabetes, as well as the effects of gender differences and hidden smoking among females on this association using nationally representative data. Analyzing data from 44,049 individuals aged 19 and older, we utilized multivariable logistic regression to investigate associations, controlling for sociodemographic factors. Subgroup analysis based on smoking status determined factors associated with diabetes. To better our understanding of the smoking-diabetes relationship, we introduced a new variable, survey-cotinine verified smoking status (SCS). This study provides valuable insight by exploring the correlation between smoking and diabetes using different definitions of smoking status. Both male and female smokers showed correlations with diabetes according to cotinine-verified smoking status (OR: 1.22 and 1.48, respectively). According to smoking amount, cotinine-verified heavy smokers correlated with diabetes in males (OR: 1.37), while light smokers exhibited a negative correlation with diabetes in females for both cotinine-verified smoking status (OR: 0.60) and survey-cotinine verified status (OR: 0.58) Smoking was associated with diabetes in the overall population, with gender differences observed. When evaluating this association, we should consider variables of smoking amount, passive and intermittent smoking, and specifically, account for the influence of hidden smoking among females, particularly when utilizing self-reported questionnaires in Korea. Summary: This study examines the association between smoking status and diabetes, focusing on gender-specific patterns, using a nationally representative sample. To increase the accuracy of smoking assessments, a new variable based on cotinine-determined smoking status is used. Introduction Thirdhand smoke (THS) is associated with many public health and disease concerns, such as respiratory illness, cancer, lipidemia, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). We have previously shown that a moderate to long-term exposure to THS increases the risk of thrombosis. However, whether short-term exposure to THS would produce any effects remains to be discovered. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of 1-month THS exposure on platelet function, in vivo and in vitro, and on cytokine response, in a sex-dependent manner. Aims and Methods Secondhand smoke or clean air (CA) exposed upholstery materials for 1 week were kept in cages housed with 5–6 mice, and the procedure was repeated for 4 weeks. These THS-exposed mice were evaluated for thrombogenesis and platelet function assays. In addition, cytokines expression was evaluated from pooled serum. Results Compared to the CA group, THS exposure significantly shortened the tail bleeding time and carotid artery thrombus formation. Moreover, the female mice appeared more sensitive to THS exposure than males. Furthermore, platelet aggregation, dense granule secretion, and P-selectin activation markers were significantly elevated due to THS exposure. In addition, high-throughput screening showed at least 30 cytokines differentially modulated by THS in females relative to 26 in male mice. Conclusions Collectively, these results demonstrate that 1 month of THS exposure represents a high health risk, in part, by triggering a prothrombotic phenotype that appears to be more significant in females, who are at a much higher risk for occlusive CVD. Additionally, changes in cytokine levels mediate some of the THS-induced occlusive effects. Implications This study revealed that THS exposure for 1 month is detrimental to the cardiovascular health of both sexes; however, females could be more aggressively affected than males. A nutritional imbalance between calories consumed and expended and low physical activity are the main causes of overweight and obesity, which pose risks to both the health of the woman and the health of her generation. Prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE) and tobacco–cannabis coexposure (PTCE) co-occur with negative maternal emotional functioning (termed prenatal risks) and together increase risk for child regulatory problems at early school age (ESA). Little is known about developmental processes in early childhood that may mediate this association. We examined two hypothesized mediational processes linking prenatal risks to ESA emotion regulation (ER) and lability–negativity; parasympathetic functioning at toddler age and chronic risk reflected by continued postnatal maternal negative emotional functioning (i.e., depression, anger/hostility, and emotion dysregulation) and substance exposure. Congruent with differential susceptibility theory, we examined interactions between sensitive parenting and toddler parasympathetic functioning predicting ESA ER. Finally, we explored the role of child sex as a moderator. Mothers (N = 247; 53% male infants; 51% Black, 31% White, 19% Hispanic, and 8% other or mixed race) were recruited in the first trimester of pregnancy into one of three groups: PTE (n = 81), PTCE (n = 97), and no substance exposure (n = 69) matched on age and education. Substance exposure was assessed using multiple methods, maternal negative emotional functioning via self-reports, parenting with observations, and child ER using teacher, maternal, and lab assessor reports. Results supported a chronic risk pathway with less support for a parasympathetic pathway. Toddlers who demonstrated respiratory sinus arrhythmia withdrawal to frustration were susceptible to the positive context of sensitive parenting in predicting higher ER. Results emphasize the importance of chronicity of postnatal risks including substance exposure and evaluating the differential impact of positive environments for children with substance exposure. Public Significance Statement: Prenatal coexposure to cannabis and tobacco is increasingly common and is associated with poorer emotion regulation at early school age. The current study evaluated a chronic postnatal risk pathway and a parasympathetic nervous system pathway from prenatal coexposure and associated risks to school age emotion regulation. Results provided support for chronic postnatal maternal mood and substance exposure risk pathways and for interactions between parasympathetic nervous system functioning and sensitive caregiving in associations with school age emotion regulation. Aim: This study classified 99 countries into four income groups and then analysed the impact of secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure at home, in public places and at school, on current cigarette smoking prevalence. Methods: We utilised data from the WHO Global Youth Tobacco Survey and a meta‐analysis was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and weighted odds ratios (wORs) of adolescent smoking behaviour and SHS exposure locations. Results: Both smoking behaviours increased with higher national income levels. Smoking behaviours in high and upper‐middle‐income countries (HICs and UMICs) exhibited an association with SHS exposure in public places (HIC: wOR, 3.50 [95% CI, 2.85–4.31]; UMIC: wOR, 2.90 [2.60–3.23]) compared to home. Low‐ and lower‐middle‐income countries (LICs and LMICs) showed an association with SHS exposure in the home (LIC: wOR, 5.33 [3.59–7.93]; LMIC: wOR, 2.71 [2.33–3.17]) than public places. The association between current cigarette smoking and SHS exposure at home increased with lower income levels, while anticipated future use of any form of tobacco with SHS exposure in public places rose in lower income countries. Conclusions: Targeted interventions based on income levels are essential, emphasising home strategies in lower income countries and public place efforts in higher income countries. Background Limited research has explored the impact of mosquito repellents exposure during early life on ADHD symptoms. This study aimed to explore the associations of exposure to mosquito repellents from pregnancy to 3 years old and the prevalence of ADHD-like behaviours among children aged 3–9 years, and further identify the sensitive exposure period. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, including 12 275 children in Hefei City, China. Exposure was self-reported via primary caregivers. ADHD-like behaviours were measured by the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham, version IV scale (SNAP-IV), and Conners' Parent Rating Scale (CPRS). Cross-over analysis, binary logistic regression and linear regression were employed. Results After adjusting for confounding variables, early-life exposure to mosquito repellents was associated with a higher risk of ADHD-like behaviours (OR = 1.81, 95% CI = 1.49–2.19). By comparing the strength of the association for each subgroup, we found exposure during 1–3 years old was a sensitive period (OR = 1.89, 95% CI = 1.25–2.87) by the cross-over analysis. Furthermore, we found a dose–response relationship in which the likelihood of ADHD-like behaviours increased with children's early-life mosquito repellents exposure dose. Conclusions Early-life exposure to mosquito repellents is linked with an elevated risk of ADHD-like behaviours in children, with a sensitive period identified during 1–3 years old. Introduction: Asthma is a common inflammatory disease of airway affecting both adults and children. In a large number of cases asthma remains poorly controlled. There is a need to find an additional therapeutic demeanour alleviating symptoms and lowering the risk complications in a long-term. Recently, increasing number of studies has been examining dietary supplements in regards to their anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-remodelling properties and their use in asthmatic patients. Aim of the Study: The aim of the study was to collect and analyse current literature regarding influence of different dietary supplements on the course of asthma in both adults and children. Methods and Materials: Extensive research was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar, with the primary focus on literature from the past 5 years. Firstly, potential dietary supplements affecting course of asthma were collected. The names of the substances were juxtaposed with term “Asthma” to gather data regarding their effect on occurrence and control of asthma and potential mechanisms responsible for it. Additionally, references from selected articles were included in the analysis. Results: Dietary supplements show promising results in decreasing asthma symptoms and lowering inflammation of airway. However, our study revealed that in current state of knowledge there is a deficit of studies performed on humans, especially large-scale, prospective studies that assess the efficacy of different doses of dietary supplements. In 2018, the authors reported estimates of the number and proportion of cancers attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors in 2014 in the United States. These data are useful for advocating for and informing cancer prevention and control. Herein, based on up‐to‐date relative risk and cancer occurrence data, the authors estimated the proportion and number of invasive cancer cases (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers) and deaths, overall and for 30 cancer types among adults who were aged 30 years and older in 2019 in the United States, that were attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors. These included cigarette smoking; second‐hand smoke; excess body weight; alcohol consumption; consumption of red and processed meat; low consumption of fruits and vegetables, dietary fiber, and dietary calcium; physical inactivity; ultraviolet radiation; and seven carcinogenic infections. Numbers of cancer cases and deaths were obtained from data sources with complete national coverage, risk factor prevalence estimates from nationally representative surveys, and associated relative risks of cancer from published large‐scale pooled or meta‐analyses. In 2019, an estimated 40.0% (713,340 of 1,781,649) of all incident cancers (excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers) and 44.0% (262,120 of 595,737) of all cancer deaths in adults aged 30 years and older in the United States were attributable to the evaluated risk factors. Cigarette smoking was the leading risk factor contributing to cancer cases and deaths overall (19.3% and 28.5%, respectively), followed by excess body weight (7.6% and 7.3%, respectively), and alcohol consumption (5.4% and 4.1%, respectively). For 19 of 30 evaluated cancer types, more than one half of the cancer cases and deaths were attributable to the potentially modifiable risk factors considered in this study. Lung cancer had the highest number of cancer cases (201,660) and deaths (122,740) attributable to evaluated risk factors, followed by female breast cancer (83,840 cases), skin melanoma (82,710), and colorectal cancer (78,440) for attributable cases and by colorectal (25,800 deaths), liver (14,720), and esophageal (13,600) cancer for attributable deaths. Large numbers of cancer cases and deaths in the United States are attributable to potentially modifiable risk factors, underscoring the potential to substantially reduce the cancer burden through broad and equitable implementation of preventive initiatives. Purpose: There are few studies in Japan evaluating informationalmaterials about passive smoking prevention with respect to health literacy. This study applied a range of health literacy assessment tools to assess the understandability of public-sector leaflets about passive smoking prevention. Methods: We collected 26 anti-passive smoking leaflets published online by Japanese prefectural governments. We used three internationally recognized health literacy assessment tools to evaluate their understandability: the Clear Communication Index (CCI), the Suitability Assessment of Materials (SAM), and the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT, further divided into scales for understandability and actionability). Results: Although none of the assessed materials met the CCI's scoring threshold for "easy to understand," the highest-scoring leaflet, which received a top-two ranking in three of the four scales (excluding the PEMAT understandability scale), was characterized by its conciseness and its easy-to-understand structure, including the use of checklists and flowcharts to engage reader interest. There was a significant correlation between CCI and SAM, and between SAM and the PEMAT understandability scale. However, the PEMAT actionability scale did not significantly associate with the other assessment scales. Objective To explore the impact of passive smoking during pregnancy on neurobehavioral developmental abnormalities in 1 - year - old children. Methods 1 363 pairs of mothers and children from the Shenzhen birth Cohort study platform were selected as the research objects. Questionnaire was used to investigate the general demography characteristics and passive smoking of pregnant women during pregnancy, and the age and development process questionnaire (ASQ - 3/ASQ: SE) was used to assess the neurobehavioral development of children at one year old. Analyze the impact of passive smoking during pregnancy on neurobehavioral developmental abnormalities in 1 - year - old children using a logistic regression model. Results Passive smoking during pregnancy had varying degrees of harmful effects on the development of 1 - year - old children, except for gross movements. Compared with those without passive smoking, pregnant women with severe passive smoking in early pregnancy had an increased risk of delayed development in communication (OR - 1. 932, 95% Cf: 1. 023 - 3. 648), fine motor skills (OR = 3. 388, 95% CI: 1. 232 - 9. 317), problem - solving (OR = 3. 270, 95% CI: 1. 317 - 7.795), and social emotional development (OR = 1.792, 95% CI: 1. 159 - 2.772) among their offspring. In mid - pregnancy, pregnant women who smoke passively had an increased risk of delayed development in communication (OR = 1, 802, 95%CI: 1.068 -3.039) and personal social (OR = 1.705, 95% CI: 1.080 -2.837) among their offsprings while pregnant women who smoke heavily had an increased risk of delayed development in communication (OR = 2. 864, 95% CI: 1.322-6.240) and social emotional (OR = 1.882, 95% CI: 1. 081 - 3.275) among their offspring. In late pregnancy, pregnant women with severe passive smoking had an increased risk of delayed communication (OR = 3. 415, 95 % CI: 1. 366 - 3. 158), fine motor skills (OR = 3. 976 times, 95% CI: 1. 838 - 13. 360), and social emotional development (OR = 2. 231, 95% C/: 1. 234 - 4. 032) in their offspring. Conclusion Passive smoking in the early, middle, and late stages of pregnancy can have varying degrees of harmful effects on the neurobehavioral development of offspring at one year old. Suggest relevant departments to increase publicity and education efforts, guide the public to reduce indoor smoking and pay attention to maternal health and early neurobehavioral development in children. Background: Evidence on the prevalence of smoking in China remains insufficient, with most previous studies focusing on a single region. However, smoking prevalence exhibits significant inequalities across the entire country. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of tobacco prevalence across the country, taking into account spatial inequalities. Methods: The data used in this study were collected in 23 provinces, 5 autonomous regions, and 4 municipalities directly under the central government in 2022. Large population survey data were used, and a Bayesian geostatistical model was employed to investigate smoking prevalence rates across multiple spatial domains. Findings: Significant spatial variations were observed in smokers and exposure to secondhand smoke across China. Higher levels of smokers and secondhand smoke exposure were observed in western and northeastern regions. Additionally, the autonomous region of Tibet, Shanghai municipality, and Yunnan province had the highest prevalence of smokers, while Tibet, Qinghai province, and Yunnan province had the highest prevalence of exposure to secondhand smoke. Conclusion: We have developed a model-based, high-resolution nationwide assessment of smoking risks and employed rigorous Bayesian geostatistical models to help visualize smoking prevalence predictions. These prediction maps provide estimates of the geographical distribution of smoking, which will serve as strong evidence for the formulation and implementation of smoking cessation policies. For the first time, our study applied Bayesian geostatistical modeling to generate a risk prediction map of smoking prevalence, which provides a more intuitive and clear understanding of the spatial disparities in smoking prevalence across different geographical regions, economic levels, and development status. Objective To analyze the risks and related influencing factors of early screening for lung cancer, and to study prognostic factors based on survival conditions, in order to ultimately provide baseline data for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer. Methods A cluster sampling method was used to select 40 to 75 year old registered residence residents in 10 districts and 6 counties of Zhengzhou City in 2020 as screening objects. Through voluntary participation and filling in evaluation questionnaires, high-risk groups of lung cancer were evaluated, and then three screening tests (tumor markers, low-dose spiral CT and lung function) were performed on high-risk groups. Finally, we will adopt an active and passive follow-up approach to collect information on diagnosed lung cancer patients. Statistically describe the screening data and describe the epidemiological results of different characteristic populations; Using multivariate logistic regression method for statistical analysis, compare the differences in various results of different factors. Results 50 128 cases of early screening for lung cancer in Zhengzhou City were evaluated in 2020, with a completion rate of 100.26%. The average age of the survey was (59.86 ± 17.67) years old, and the gender ratio was 0.81:1. The high-risk detection rate is 30.15%. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that males (smoking) (OR = 5.43, 95% CI: 5.20 ~ 5.67), individuals with a history of tobacco exposure (OR = 3.82, 95% CI: 3.67 ~ 3.98), first-degree relatives who had previously suffered from lung cancer (OR = 12.06, 95% CI: 11.02 ~ 13.20), and other populations were more susceptible to lung cancer (all P < 0.05). Conclusion Male (smoking), exposure to secondhand smoke, cancer in first-degree relatives, previous diagnosis of other tumors, symptoms of lung infection, "chest tightness, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing in daily life", and "significant psychological trauma in the past 3 years" are independent risk factors for lung cancer, which should be given special attention and effective intervention measures should be taken. Background: Cigar use among adults in the United States has remained relatively stable in the past decade and occupies a growing part of the tobacco marketplace as cigarette use has declined. While studies have established the detrimental respiratory health effects of cigarette use, the effects of cigar use need further characterization. In this study, we evaluate the prospective association between cigar use, with or without cigarettes, and asthma exacerbation. Methods: We used data from Waves 1–5 (2013–2019) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health Study to run generalized estimating equation models examining the association between time-varying, one-wave-lagged cigarette and cigar use and self-reported asthma exacerbation among US adults (18+). We defined our exposure as non-established (reference), former, exclusive cigarette, exclusive cigar, and dual use. We defined an asthma exacerbation event as a reported asthma attack in the past 12 months necessitating oral or injected steroid medication or asthma symptoms disrupting sleep at least once a week in the past 30 days. We adjusted for age, sex, race and ethnicity, household income, health insurance, established electronic nicotine delivery systems use, cigarette pack-years, secondhand smoke exposure, obesity, and baseline asthma exacerbation. Results: Exclusive cigarette use (incidence rate ratio (IRR): 1.26, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03–1.54) and dual use (IRR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.08–1.85) were associated with a higher rate of asthma exacerbation compared to non-established use, while former use (IRR: 1.01, 95% CI: 0.80–1.28) and exclusive cigar use (IRR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.42–1.17) were not. Conclusion: We found no association between exclusive cigar use and self-reported asthma exacerbation. However, exclusive cigarette use and dual cigarette and cigar use were associated with higher incidence rates of self-reported asthma exacerbation compared to non-established use. Aim: Making indoor environments 100% smoke-free is the only proven way to protect people from passive smoking. This study aimed to evaluate the smoking status of café, coffeehouse, and restaurant owners and their views on Law No. 4207, which prohibits tobacco use in indoor public spaces, considering sociodemographic variables and the COVID-19 pandemic period. Materials and Methods: The cross-sectional study population comprised 131 café, coffeehouse, and restaurant owners located on busy streets in the central district of Kars. Results: 72 restaurants, 45 cafés, and 14 coffeehouses owners participated to the study. Among the employers don't allow smoking in the indoor areas of their businesses is 82.4%. Among the 85 smokers, 65.9% did not feel compelled to smoke in prohibited areas, and 57.0% viewed the indoor smoking ban positively. Of the 125 business owners who reported financial loss during the COVID-19 pandemic, 61.6% cited the country's economic situation as the primary reason. In the logistic regression analysis showed that a positive view of the law was 2.69 times higher among employers with high school education or above compared to those with middle school education or lower (95% CI: 1.01-7.2, p=0.049), 3,96 times higher those who did not allow smoking indoors at their workplace compared to those who did (95% CI: 1.28-12.23, p=0.017), and 10.98 times higher among those who stated that the law did not cause financial loss compared to those who stated it did (95% CI: 3.34-36.07, p<0.001). Conclusion: Most smoking business owners view Law No. 4207 positively, this indicating that the law is also embraced by smoking employers. The business owners's identification of the country's economic situation as the main reason for financial loss during COVID-19 suggest that this factor could diminish the gains of Law No. 4207 and indicate the need for a more comprehensive tobacco control strategy. Despite robust evidence supporting exposure‐based interventions for anxiety disorders in youth, these treatments are often underutilized, implemented with low fidelity, and delivered in an unnecessarily cautious manner. Few studies have examined important implementation variables (e.g., knowledge, training, perceptions) related to using exposures in schools. A national sample of school psychologists (N = 318) working in K‐12 public schools reported on their knowledge, training, perceptions, confidence, and use regarding exposures. Over 50% of respondents reported they do not use exposures. Only slightly more than half of the respondents received training in exposures through graduate coursework. Eighty percent endorsed negative beliefs about exposures, with nearly 50% expressing concern about acceptability of the intervention by parents. Barriers to delivering exposures within schools endorsed included inadequate time (79% of sample), training (61%), and access to training materials (51%). Implications for training, practice, and research in school psychology are discussed. Practitioner Points: This study documents school psychologists' training in and experiences with using exposures, a critical intervention component to address anxiety.The majority of school psychologists in the sample reported at least some knowledge and training with exposures, though the quality of training was identified by many as suboptimal.The majority of school psychologists expressed limited confidence in their ability to effectively deliver exposures in school and more than half the sample endorsed never using exposures in schools. Tobacco smoke is probably the most significant factor conducing to toxic xenobiotics exposure to humans. The aim of the study was to develop a rapid and sensitive method for the determination of selected nicotine metabolites in urine of tobacco smokers and passive smokers. The method for removing protein and extracting the metabolites involved the centrifugation of urine with acetonitrile. Cotinine, trans-3′-hydroxycotinine, and (2′S)-nicotine 1'-oxide in the supernatant were determined using the LC-Orbitrap-MS/MS technique, with the selected ion monitoring (SIM) and parallel reaction monitoring (PRM) modes used. The recovery of these analytes added to the urine samples ranged from 72% to 101%. Repeatability and reproducibility were less than 3.1% and 10.1%, respectively. The study was carried out among medical students. The group was selected as representatives of young people and who as future physicians should be more aware of the effects of nicotine use. Concentration levels of cotinine and trans-3′-hydroxycotinine determined in ng/mL in the urine of cigarette smokers were 70- and 58-fold higher, respectively, compared to passive smokers. Higher concentrations were recorded in the urine of those passively exposed to tobacco smoke than in non-smokers, confirming that passive exposure to tobacco smoke is not harmless to the human body. Simple Summary: Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths around the world. The main risk factor associated with development of this disease is smoking, with about 80% of lung cancer deaths being related to smoking. However, non-smokers can also develop lung cancer due to an exposure to other harmful substances such as asbestos, radon and other carcinogens. The aim of our study is to present the trends and most recent studies aimed at lung cancer screening. Further research aimed at screening and smoking cessation interventions is recommended. Lung cancer is the leading cause of death among all the oncological diseases worldwide. This applies to both women and men; however, the incidence and mortality among women is on the rise. In 2020, lung cancer was responsible for 1.8 million deaths (18%). More than 90% of lung cancer cases and 77.1% of lung cancer deaths occur in countries with high and very high HDI (human development index) values. The aim of our study is to the present trends and most recent studies aimed at lung cancer screening. In the face of the persistently high mortality rate, conducting research aimed at extending already-implemented diagnostic algorithms and behavioural interventions focused on smoking cessation is recommended. Tobacco use continues to be a prevalent behavior among many mothers and fathers throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. The current review provides a framework for understanding parental tobacco smoking during a critical period of child development and its potential impact on postpartum caregiving. It is well documented that maternal illicit substance use can compromise caregiving, increasing the risk of child neglect and maltreatment. However, to date, few studies have specifically investigated the impact of tobacco smoking among mothers and fathers during the prenatal and postpartum periods and how parental tobacco smoking may influence postpartum caregiving. We review current literature on parental tobacco smoking, with a predominant focus on mothers who use tobacco, and the potential impact on postpartum caregiving with a view to informing and tailoring tobacco-cessation programs for expectant and new parents who smoke tobacco. Highlights: The continuation of tobacco-use among mothers and fathers during the prenatal and postpartum periods is of significance. Maternal tobacco-use is influenced by paternal tobacco smoking behaviors. Postpartum tobacco-use can lead to suboptimal caregiving behaviors, such as reduced breastfeeding initiation and duration. Legislative smoking bans that prohibit smoking in public places have successfully reduced passive smoking in public areas. However, smokers only partially adhere to smoking restrictions in their homes. Young children are particularly vulnerable to exposure to tobacco smoke because they spend more time at home. In this study, we designed an intervention program based on an empowerment theory to reduce passive smoking among children. The priority participants were nonsmoking mothers living with smokers who smoke in the presence of children. The aim of this randomized control trial study was to examine the effectiveness of this intervention in reducing children's exposure to tobacco smoke at home. The intervention group received tailored educational brochures and two follow-up counseling telephone calls at 2 and 8 weeks, which provided resources to support the mothers to increase their knowledge, skill, and self-confidence in promoting behavior shaping of smokers. The control group received only tailored educational brochures. We found the intervention group demonstrated a higher rate of maternal actions to reduce their children's exposure to smoke and a higher rate than the control group of attempts to avoid smoking in the presence of children at the 16-week follow-up. These results suggest that the intervention helped reduce passive smoking among children. These findings highlight the need to empower and train mothers to help them develop rules for smoking at home. The marketing of heated tobacco products (HTPs), like IQOS, influences consumers' perceptions. This mixed-methods study analyzed (i) survey data (2021) of 2222 US and Israeli adults comparing perceptions of 7 IQOS attributes (design, technology, colors, customization, flavors, cost and maintenance) and 10 marketing messages (e.g. 'Go smoke-free...') across tobacco use subgroups and (ii) qualitative interviews (n  = 84) regarding IQOS perceptions. In initial bivariate analyses, those never using HTPs (86.2%) reported the least overall appeal; those currently using HTPs (7.7%) reported the greatest appeal. Notably, almost all (94.8%) currently using HTPs also currently used cigarettes (82.0%) and/or e-cigarettes (64.0%). Thus, multivariable linear regression accounted for current cigarette/e-cigarette use subgroup and HTP use separately; compared to neither cigarette/e-cigarette use (62.8%), cigarette/no e-cigarette use (17.1%) and e-cigarette/no cigarette use (6.5%), those with dual use (13.5%) indicated greater overall IQOS appeal (per composite index score); current HTP use was not associated. Qualitative data indicated varied perceptions regarding advantages (e.g. harm, addiction and complexity) of IQOS versus cigarettes and e-cigarettes, and perceived target markets included young people, those looking for cigarette alternatives and females. Given the perceived target markets and particular appeal to dual cigarette/e-cigarette use groups, IQOS marketing and population impact warrant ongoing monitoring to inform regulation. In this study the aim was to examine the factors associated with the tobacco use status of individuals aged 60 and older. In this study, the microdata set obtained from the Turkey Health Survey conducted by TURKSTAT in 2016 and 2019 was used. The binary logistic regression analysis was used to identify variables associated with tobacco use status at old age. According to the findings, 15.62% of older adults use tobacco. According to the results of the analysis, gender, age, educational status, marital status, employment status, body mass index, visiting a psychotherapist and psychiatrist, exposure to tobacco smoke and alcohol use influence tobacco use among older adults. At the end of this study, it was concluded that older males are in the high-risk group for tobacco use. For this reason, it is suggested that male specific tobacco prevention policies be implemented. The results indicated that being an older single was a risk factor for tobacco use. Therefore, efforts to increase social support for older adults living alone and social activities for older adults should be supported, and this issue should be highlighted in government action plans. Household smoking is one of the main sources of environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure for children, a population considered to be at high risk for associated negative health outcomes. Several studies evidenced the occurrence of early effects related to ETS exposure, including the development of the oxidative stress process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between urinary levels of 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2-deoxyguanosine (8oxodGuo), a nucleic acid oxidation biomarker, and socio-demographic features and lifestyle factors in school children (aged 5–11 years). A cross-sectional study was conducted among 154 healthy children, residing in rural zones of central Italy. For each participant, one urine sample was analyzed by the HPLC-MS/MS technique to simultaneously quantify 8oxodGuo and cotinine (a biomarker of ETS exposure), while information on the children was collected using a questionnaire filled out by the parents. Urinary levels of 8oxodGuo was found to be significantly higher in children exposed to ETS compared to those not exposed (5.53 vs. 4.78 μg/L; p = 0.019). This result was confirmed by the significant association observed between urinary levels of cotinine and 8oxodGuo (r = 0.364, p < 0.0001). Additionally, children exposed to ETS with no smoking ban at home showed a further increased difference than those not exposed (6.35 μg/L vs. 4.78 μg/L; p = 0.008). Considering the great number of adverse effects on human health due to exposure to passive smoking, especially if this exposure begins early in life, it is essential to implement health promotion interventions in this area. Introduction: Armenia's and Georgia's high rates of smoking and secondhand smoke and recent implementation of smoke-free laws provide a timely opportunity to examine factors that increase compliance, like social enforcement and support for governmental enforcement. Methods: Using 2022 data from 1,468 Armenian and Georgian adults (Mage=42.92, 48.6% male, 31.6% past-month smoking), multilevel linear regression examined tobacco-related media exposures, social exposures, and perceptions/attitudes in relation to: 1) likelihood of asking someone to extinguish cigarettes where a) prohibited and b) allowed; and 2) support of fines for smoke-free violations (1=not at all to 4=very). Results: There was low average likelihood of asking someone to extinguish cigarettes where allowed (M=1.01, SD=1.12) or prohibited (M=1.57, SD=1.21) and "little" agreement with fines for smoke-free violations (M=2.13, SD=1.06). Having fewer friends who smoked, greater support for indoor smoke-free laws, and no past-month cigarette use were positively associated with all 3 outcomes. Greater exposure to media and community-based action supporting smoke-free policies, and witnessing more requests to stop smoking where prohibited were associated with higher likelihood of asking someone to extinguish cigarettes where allowed or prohibited. Less exposure to news stories opposing smoke-free policies and cigarette ads and higher perceived harm of cigarettes were also related to higher likelihood of asking someone to stop smoking where prohibited. Higher perceived harm of cigarettes was also associated with greater agreement with fines for smoke-free violations. Conclusions: Comprehensive strategies targeting social norms, media exposure, and risk perceptions are needed to effectively facilitate strategies to enhance smoke-free law enforcement. Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases stand as the leading global cause of mortality. Major modifiable risk factors encompass overweight/obese conditions, high blood pressure, elevated LDL cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, secondhand smoke exposure, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. In the present study, we explored the relationship between cardiovascular risk factors and epigenetic age (DNAm age), an estimate reflecting an individual's actual physiological functionality and overall health. Additionally, we assessed the association between DNAm age acceleration and cardiovascular risk, as evaluated through the Framingham risk score (FRS). Methods: The study includes 190 subjects with overweight/obese conditions. We calculated their DNAm age using Zbieć-Piekarska et al.'s DNAm age estimator on five sets of CpGs analyzed in the peripheral leucocytes. Linear regression models were employed to test the associations. Results: Various parameters contributing to increased cardiovascular risk were associated with DNAm age acceleration, such as systolic blood pressure (β = 0.045; SE = 0.019; p = 0.019), heart rate (β = 0.096; SE = 0.032; p = 0.003), blood glucose (β = 0.025; SE = 0.012; p = 0.030), glycated hemoglobin (β = 0.105; SE = 0.042; p = 0.013), diabetes (β = 2.247; SE = 0.841; p = 0.008), and menopausal conditions (β = 2.942; SE = 1.207; p = 0.016), as well as neutrophil (β = 0.100; SE = 0.042; p = 0.018) and granulocyte (β = 0.095; SE = 0.044; p = 0.033) counts. Moreover, DNAm age acceleration raised the FRS (∆% 5.3%, 95% CI 0.8; 9.9, p = 0.019). Conclusion: For the first time, we report that cardiovascular risk factors accelerated DNAm age in a selected population of hypersusceptible individuals with overweight or obesity. Objective: We conducted a study to determine if antenatally collected maternal urine cotinine (a metabolite of nicotine) measurements can be used to assess the neonatal impact of nicotine exposure during pregnancy. This was a prospective longitudinal cohort of mother–infant dyads. Only term singleton pregnancies were included. The primary outcome measure was the correlation between maternal urine cotinine and infant birth weight. Methods: We analysed data from 238 mother–neonate dyads. Smoking habits were recorded during routine prenatal check-ups and urine samples were collected to measure cotinine and creatinine levels. Results: Urine cotinine was detected in 50.4% (120/238) of women from the whole cohort, but only 16% (38/238) self-reported as smokers (chi-square 39.7, p < 0.0001), and these women had significantly smaller babies (p = 0.010). There was a significant negative correlation between maternal urine cotinine and birth weight (Spearman's coefficient = −0.0226, p = 0.013). Female babies born to women with nicotine in their urine were significantly smaller (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Infant birth weight significantly reduced in mothers with exposure to nicotine during pregnancy. The number of women exposed to nicotine during late pregnancy (measured in urine) was markedly higher than self-reported and national smoking percentages, suggesting an urgent need for an improvement in medical record reporting on smoking habits to better assess neonatal outcomes. Although Cyprus is considered a developed country, the tobacco prevalence and related issues have not been explored sufficiently in the general population of North Cyprus.The objective of this study is to determine the rate of tobacco product consumption and related factors among the visitors of a community health center and a university hospital in Northern Cyprus.The study was designed as a cross-sectional study The data were collected using a questionnaire developed in compliance with WHO guidelines. The data were analyzed using IBM-SPSS18.0 with p < 0.05 evaluated as significant.Out of a total of 635 individuals approached, 615 provided responses. The participation rate was 96%. The frequency of male smokers was 47.2%, while the frequency of female smokers was 34.0%, with a total smoking rate of 40.7%, much higher than world averages. The survey identified friendship influence as the primary reason for starting tobacco use, accounting for 42%, followed by being stressed at 34.6%. Male gender, being single, having no children, Turkish nationality were predictors of smoking, while financial status was not. The participants indicated a high frequency regarding exposure to passive smoke (51.1%). More than half of the respondents thought tobacco control in Northern Cyprus is not satisfactory.More research needs to be done to determine the exact overall prevalence of tobacco consumption in the population, which was found high in this study. Objectives: In addition to harms caused to individuals who smoke, second-hand smoke (SHS or passive smoke) is an important public health issue. We aim to estimate the extent of preventable deaths due to tobacco and SHS exposure in Southeast Asia. Methods: Data were from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We analysed data from Southeast Asia, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, Philippines, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. Results: In 2019, there were 728,500 deaths attributable to tobacco in Southeast Asia, with 128,200 deaths attributed to SHS exposure. The leading causes of preventable deaths were ischemic heart disease, stroke, diabetes mellitus, lower respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer. Among deaths attributable to tobacco, females had higher proportions of deaths attributable to SHS exposure than males in Southeast Asia. Conclusion: The burden of preventable deaths in a year due to SHS exposure in Southeast Asia is substantial. Background: Smoking is a leading cause of premature mortality and morbidity globally. The pollutants generated from smoke are not only harmful to smokers, but also to those exposed to secondhand smoke. As a result of increasingly restrictive indoor smoke-free policies in many countries, there is a tendency for tobacco smoking to move outdoors into partially enclosed settings in hospitality venues. The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of secondhand smoke on air quality in outdoor hospitality venues. Methods: Two electronic databases PubMed and Scopus were searched from 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2022 for studies of air quality impacts from tobacco smoking in outdoor hospitality venues. A total of 625 studies were screened and 13 studies were included in this review. Results: The majority (9 studies) of reviewed studies monitored PM2.5 concentration as an indicator of secondhand smoke. PM2.5 was reported from 10.9 µg/m3 to 91.0 µg/m3 in outdoor smoking areas, compared to 4.0 µg/m3 to 20.4 µg/m3 in outdoor control sites unaffected by smoking. Secondhand smoke can also drift into adjacent outdoor areas or infiltrate into indoor environments thus affecting air quality in spaces where smoking is not permitted. Conclusions: The reviewed studies indicated that air quality within outdoor hospitality venues where smoking is permitted is unlikely to meet current World Health Organization (WHO) ambient air quality guidelines for PM2.5. Customers and staff in outdoor hospitality venues with active smoking, and in adjacent outdoor and indoor non-smoking areas, are potentially exposed to secondhand smoke at levels exceeding WHO guidelines. Objective: Despite the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) program in Iran, the regulation of second-hand smoke (SHS) exposure—an often-overlooked hazard—, still requires improvement. We employed a multi-center case-control study to investigate the association between exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) from various tobacco products (cigarettes, water-pipes, pipes, and chopogh), opium use, and the risk of lung cancer. Method: We included 627 lung cancer cases and 3477 controls. Exposure to SHS tobacco and SHS opium was collected through a questionnaire. We used mixed-model logistic regressions to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Result: Among the overall population exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS), the odds ratio (OR) compared to those never exposed was 1.35 (95% CI: 1.08–1.71). Never smokers who were ever exposed to second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS) had 1.69-fold risk of lung cancer compared to those who were never exposed (95% CI: 1.13–2.52). Exposure to SHTS between 2–3 per day (OR = 2.27, 95% CI: 1.13–4.53) and more than three hours per day (OR = 2.29, 95% CI: 1.20–4.37) can increase the risk of lung cancer compared with the no exposure group (P-trend <0.01). We did not observe any association between exposure to second-hand opium smoke (SHOS) and the risk of lung cancer, either in the overall population or among never-smokers. Conclusion: Our study estimates the impact of second-hand tobacco smoke (SHTS) on lung cancer risk in both the overall population and never-smokers. Additional studies are required to evaluate the association between exposure to second-hand smoke from opium and other type of tobacco, including water-pipe and the risk of lung cancer. Introduction: Although the health effects of first‐hand smoke and second‐hand smoke are well known, third‐hand smoke (THS) is a relatively new concept. We estimated the prevalence of people's knowledge that THS is harmful to health, including for some subgroups, in a meta‐analysis. Methods: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO Host, ProQuest, and YOKTEZ databases for the prevalence of people's knowledge that THS is harmful to health using specified search words. A total of 12 publications (n = 8549 people) were included in the meta‐analysis. The random effect model was used for meta‐analysis, and Cochran's Q test and I2 values were used to determine heterogeneity. Subgroup analyzes and meta‐regression were also performed. Results: The prevalence of people's knowledge that THS is harmful was 80.1%. The prevalence of people's knowledge that THS is harmful for children was 82%, and the prevalence of people's knowledge that THS is harmful for adults was 70.4%. For health professionals, the prevalence of people's knowledge that THS is harmful for children was 89.8%, the highest prevalence value calculated in this meta‐analysis. Cochran's Q test and I2 values indicated that the included studies were heterogeneous. Scholars have long argued that incidental news exposure (INE) is a potentially valuable way citizens gain political information and learn about current affairs. Yet growing scholarship on news avoidance suggests many people still manage to consume little news, and algorithmic curation may decrease the likelihood that they will be exposed to it incidentally. In this article, we put the literatures on INE, news avoidance, and political talk into dialogue with one another. Then, by inductively analyzing over a hundred in-depth interviews conducted from 2016 to 2020 with news avoiders in the UK, Spain, and the United States, we explore how they encounter news incidentally and to what extent they feel the news is accessible and available to them. Our audience-centric approach highlights that interviewees often did not make a clear distinction between direct encounters with professional news ("firsthand news") and discussions of news ("secondhand news"), especially online. When they did make a distinction, the latter was often more salient for them. We also find that just as news consumers have repertoires of news sources on which they habitually rely, news avoiders have repertoires of sources for incidental exposure to news to stay informed about major events and anything that might affect them directly. And yet, those repertoires catch only the biggest and most sensational stories of the day and do little to help them contextualize or understand the news they encounter, contributing to their sense that news is neither entirely absent nor ambient in the way scholars have theorized. Background: Prematurity is considered to be the leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age, with one child dying every 2 s. Smoking is known to be one of the factors associated with prematurity, with both immediate and late consequences. However, it is difficult to obtain concrete data on the relationship between smoking and spontaneous preterm birth. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of active and passive smoking on spontaneous preterm birth. Methods: This was a multicenter, cross‐sectional complementary study that included data on preterm births in 20 maternity hospitals in Brazil between 2011 and 2012. The relationship between smoking category (people who smoke [PWS]; people who smoke indirectly [PWSI]; and people who do not smoke [PWDNS]) and sociodemographic characteristics, birth, and neonatal data was assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using frequencies, percentages, the χ2 test, and stepwise comparisons, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The original study included 5295 pregnant participants and their preterm infants. There were 1491 spontaneous preterm births (SPBs); 1191 preterm rupture of membranes; 1468 therapeutic preterm births; and 1146 term births. The proportion of women who were PWS during pregnancy was 13.5%, and 31.6% were PWSI. Pregnant individuals who smoked and who smoked indirectly had a higher incidence of SPBs (61.2%) compared with PWDNS (48.4%; P < 0.0001); however, multivariate analysis did not confirm causality. Conclusions: This study did not confirm that smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of SPB. PWSI also did not have an increased incidence of spontaneous preterm birth or adverse neonatal outcomes. Introduction This study aimed to determine the sex-specific effects of active and passive cigarette smoking on the full spectrum of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among a sizeable adult population. Methods This study was conducted within the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) framework. Participants included 7478 adults in the last examination of the TLGS. We used a quantile regression model to compare sex-specific HRQoL distributions among non-, current, and passive smokers. Two-step cluster analysis was used to consider the synergic effects of confounder variables. Results In men, current smoking was negatively associated with only mental HRQoL in all percentiles of its distribution with a decrease in absolute estimation values from the lowest (5th: β = −6.59, p  < .001) to the highest (90th: β=−0.93, p  = .027). Also, passive smoking was negatively associated with men's physical HRQoL in the upper percentiles of its distribution (75th: β = −1.12, p  = .010; 90th: β = −1.26, p  = .016). In women, the current (β = −4.17 to −4.45 for 25th to 90th percentiles) and passive smokers (β = −2.05 to −4.25 for 10th to 90th percentiles) had lower mental HRQoL in the mentioned percentiles. Also, the current smoking had a negative association with the 5th percentile (β = −2.04, p  = .008), and a positive association with the 50th (β = 1.94, p  < .008) and 75th percentile of physical HRQoL (β = 2.25, p  = .004). Conclusions The present study showed the harmful effect of smoking on mental HRQol in all participants. In contrast, the physical effect of smoking was only observed in female active smokers and at the extreme levels of the physical HRQoL spectrum. Implications According to the harmful effect of smoking on HRQoL, understanding active and passive smokers' perceptions of how smoking impacts their health is critical for tobacco control programs. Since most previous studies of smoking and HRQoL have mainly focused on the extreme parts or central values of the HRQoL distribution, the use of a multiple regression approach enables the evaluation of other parts of the conditional distribution of the outcome variable. Background: Both the high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) infection and tobacco exposure are significantly associated with cervical neoplasm risk. Immune cells play important roles in carcinogenesis. However, it is still unclear whether immune cells have a mediating effect on the HR-HPV infection and tobacco exposure with cervical neoplasm development. Aim: The aim of this study was to determine how the increased white blood cell (WBC) count affects the relationship between HR-HPV DNA load and tobacco exposure in the development of cervical neoplasia. Methods: A hospital-based case–control study design was conducted with a total of 108 cases of Taiwanese women with ≥ cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I confirmed by biopsy, and 222 healthy Taiwanese female subjects with negative findings on a Pap smear were assigned to the control group. The study evaluated HR-HPV status and immune cell counts (WBCs, natural killer (NK) cells) and tobacco exposure by a self-construct questionnaire. Results: Both HR-HPV DNA load and tobacco exposure significantly independently increased cervical neoplasm risk (AORs: 1.28 and 1.42, respectively). Similar significant results were found for WBCs and NK cells, with respective AORs of 1.20 and 1.00. Moreover, increased WBCs (β = 0.04, 95% CI corrected: 0.01–0.07) and tobacco exposure (β = 0.02, 95% CI corrected: 0.01–0.04) mediated the relationship between the high-risk HPV DNA load and cervical neoplasm risk. Conclusions: Elevated WBC count acts as both predictor and mediator in cervical neoplasm development linked to HR-HPV DNA load. Background: Passive exposure to environmental tobacco smoke in the home and other places, and active smoking throughout later childhood all have an impact on the respiratory health of children. Parental smoking has been associated with respiratory symptoms and deteriorated lung function in children. Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence of respiratory symptoms among children and their association with passive smoking and respiratory symptoms among children aged up to 12 years in selected tertiary care hospitals in Sindh. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional study, conducted in two tertiary care hospitals from where 217 children aged up to 12 years were selected who attended the pediatric OPD for a routine checkup. Children suffering from malignancies and other health issues such as chest infection and congenital pulmonary airway malformation were excluded. Results: A total of 217 children with a mean age of 6.4 years (±5.0) years participated in this study. Approximately 73.6 % of children between 0-6 years and 85% between 7-12 years had cough respectively. The results show a significant association between the smoking status of parents and respiratory health among children (0.049), according to the analysis symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath while running/walking, and getting tired p-values 0.038, 0.035, and 0.003 easily show statistically significant association whereas phlegm production shows non-significant (p-value 0.380) association with passive smoking exposure among children up to 12 years of age, experienced in last 30 days for more than 2 times/week. Conclusion: Children’s health experts should discuss the negative effects of smoking and the necessity of reducing exposure to secondhand smoke; parents should be informed about these issues and advised not to smoke in front of children.

SETTING: Urban setting in the Philippines. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of the ABC Approach developed by The Union as a tobacco-smoking cessation intervention for TB patients at a primary healthcare level in an urban setting in the Philippines. DESIGN: We set up an intervention group whose patients with TB received the ABC approach and a control group of patients with TB receiving only routine health education in Manila, The Philippines. We collected smoking status and the domestic secondhand-smoking (SHS) status data from patients with TB at months 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12. TB treatment outcome data were also collected. RESULTS: Patients with TB (n = 2,174) were enrolled upon TB registration. Smoking rates were consistently low in the intervention group (3.9% vs. 8.7% at Month 6). The odds ratios of both tobacco-smoking status and domestic SHS status in the intervention group were significantly lower than those in the control group (tobacco-smoking status: P < 0.001, domestic SHS status: P < 0.01). TB treatment success rates were similar between the groups (85.0% vs. 87.3%; P = 0.201). CONCLUSION: The ABC approach successfully reduced tobacco-smoking rates, maintained low domestic SHS rates and TB treatment success rates in the Philippines.

Introduction Tobacco smoke is a major health risk factor for smokers but also for non-smokers due to passive smoking. These risks come from conventional cigarette smoke but also from aerosol produced by electronic cigarettes and heated tobacco products (HTPs). The aim of this study was to investigate population knowledge about the adverse effects of passive smoking from traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and HTPs. Methods Between February and October 2023, 504 subjects among the general population responded to a questionnaire with 8 questions in Italian, via a link to the Google Forms platform. The questions related to the oral health effects of active and passive smoking. Descriptive analyses of all variables in the questionnaire were performed, and statistical analyses between variables were carried out using the chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test. Results A large subset of individuals interviewed stated that active smoking is harmful to health and consider active smoking more damaging compared with passive smoking (86.3%). The majority believed that passive smoking of cigarettes is more harmful to oral health than passive smoking of HTPs (79.4%) or electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) (84.9%). Conclusions Results suggest that most people in this study had good knowledge about the adverse effects of active or passive smoking on health; however, knowledge regarding e-cigarettes and HTPs was poor and confused. These results reveal the complexity of perceptions regarding different types of smoking and the need for further research to fully understand the risks associated with each type of passive smoking.

How do citizens express environmentalism and lead sustainable change in an authoritarian country like China, where contentious political civic actions have limited saliency? Can we re-imagine what forms of citizen action build ’environmental movement’ in this socio-political context? Based on 41 in-depth interviews and seven months of participant observations in China’s zero waste community, this article proposes networked sustainable lifestyle activism as an important form of environmental movement in China’s socio-political context. Drawing on lifestyle movement (Haenfler et al. 2012) and sustainable materialism (Schlosberg 2019) theories, I analyze the growth, characteristics, and limitations of the zero waste movement in China. It consists of sustainable lifestyle activism that adopts lifestyle change for broader sustainability, pursues anti-consumerism authentic identity and well-being as a site of change, and grows through social media and informal networks. Meanwhile, the movement goes beyond individual lifestyle change as networks of secondhand material flow and collective, non-contentious environmental actions. Difficulties to promote widespread, thorough sustainable lifestyle change and constrained political engagement are important factors that limit the movement’s effects. My research contributes to the literature on new environmental movements, theoretical discussion of environmental movements in China, and empirical understanding of civic environmental actions in this socio-political context. AbstractTobacco use poses significant public health concerns, linked to various mental and physical health outcomes. Iraq has a high prevalence of smoking, predominantly with traditional cigarettes, but there is also growing popularity of electronic cigarettes and waterpipes among younger and middle-aged adults. This study aims to explore the perceptions and usage of traditional cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, and waterpipes among this population in Iraq. A descriptive study was conducted among 402 young and middle-aged adults (50.25% females), aged between 18 and 45 years, with a mean age of 25.88 (SD = 7.27). For the data collection, an online questionnaire was developed utilizing distribution channels on common social networking platforms. The results showed that 41.79% of respondents have used traditional cigarettes, while 31.1% of participants reported that they use electronic cigarettes. Ninety-four per cent of respondents acknowledged that they use waterpipes. The results also indicated that a significant proportion believe that using electronic cigarettes is either much more harmful or more harmful than traditional cigarettes. Participants commonly perceived all three types of tobacco products as highly harmful, including secondhand smoke, addictive qualities, and popularity among peers. Additionally, significant differences in perceptions emerged between smokers and nonsmokers regarding electronic cigarettes and traditional cigarettes, although no such differences were observed for waterpipes. These findings contribute to understanding the attitudes toward different forms of tobacco use among respondents, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address the perceived harm associated with tobacco products. Exposure to cigarette smoke is known to induce disease during pregnancy. Recent evidence showed that exposure to secondhand smoke (SHS) negatively impacts fetal and placental weights, leading to the development of intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Electronic cigarettes (eCigs) represent a phenomenon that has recently emerged, and their use is also steadily rising. Even so, the effects of SHS or eCigs during gestation remain limited. In the present study, we wanted to characterize the effects of SHS or eCig exposure at two different important gestational points during mouse pregnancy. C57/Bl6 mice were exposed to SHS or eCigs via a nose-only delivery system for 4 days (from 14.5 to 17.5 gestational days (dGA) or for 6 days (from 12.5 dGA to 17.5 dGA)). At the time of necropsy (18.5 dGA), placental and fetal weights were recorded, maternal blood pressure was determined, and a dipstick test to measure proteinuria was performed. Placental tissues were collected, and inflammatory molecules in the placenta were identified. Treatment with SHS showed the following: (1) a significant decrease in placental and fetal weights following four days of exposure, (2) higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure following six days of exposure, and (3) increased proteinuria after six days of exposure. Treatment with eCigs showed the following: (1) a significant decrease in placental weight and fetal weight following four or six days of exposure, (2) higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure following six days of exposure, and (3) increased proteinuria after six days of exposure. We also observed different inflammatory markers associated with the development of IUGR or PE. We conclude that the detrimental effects of SHS or eCig treatment coincide with the length of maternal exposure. Background: Nutrition exerts a fundamental role in the prevention of obesity (OB). The aim of this study was to assess the extent to which well recognized risk factors for early OB can be associated to overweight (OW) or OB under a standardized nutritional approach and surveillance in toddlers. Methods: The eligible population was represented by 676 toddlers aged 24–36 months, assigned to 18 primary care pediatricians trained on nutritional issues who shared a standardized nutritional approach. Six-hundred-twenty-nine children (333 boys), mean age 27.8 ± 4.2 months were effectively included in this observational study. Parents received nutritional advice with particular emphasis to proteins and sugar composition supported by leaflets and reinforced at each visit. Body mass index was assessed at the age of 24–36 months. The following individual and family risk factors were considered: gestational age, birth weight, eutocic/caesarean delivery, milk feeding history, household smoking or antibiotics exposure, parents' weight, height and educational level. Prevalence of OW/OB was compared to a group of 742 toddlers (373 boys) under usual care. Results: Under a standardized nutritional counselling, 28.1% toddlers were classified as OW/OB compared to 36.9% toddlers under usual care (p = 0.005). In unadjusted models, parental OW/OB was significantly associated to OW/OB in toddlers (p < 0.01), while high birth weight did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.07). In adjusted models, including all the explanatory variables studied, only paternal OW/OB vs. normal weight was significantly associated to OW/OB in toddlers (OR 2.035, 95% confidence interval 1.206–3.436). No protective effect of exclusive breast feeding during the first 6 months of age was demonstrated. Conclusions: Toddlers under a standardized nutrition counselling focused to limit protein and simple sugars, showed lower prevalence of OW/OB compared to usual care. AbstractObjective: This systematic review aims to provide an update of the scientific evidence regarding tobacco-free/smoke-free campus policies (TFC/SFC), using a complex interventions approach. Participants/methods: We searched the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases using a combination of ‘tobacco-free’ or ‘smoke-free’, ‘campus’, ‘university or college’ and ‘policy’ search terms on all indexed articles published up until June 2023. Studies were included if they presented research on pre-/post-implementation of TFC/SFC or policy components. Two coders extracted and synthesized the data and assessed the risk of bias. Results: A total of 113 studies were included, reporting data from 2005 to 2023 across 17 countries. The data was categorized into three of the four phases of the Medical Research Council (MRC) framework, i.e. “feasibility (n=24), “implementation” (n=34), and “evaluation” (n=69). This review finds that a policy draft, communication, enforcement strategies, and cessation services are critical policy components. TCF/SFC are effective for reducing tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, but they also increase vaping. Little research has investigated the effect of TFC/SFC on smokeless tobacco use. Conclusion: This review addresses remaining uncertainties in evidence on the TFC/SFC implementation process. We go on to provide a series of recommendations for university administrators. Stealthing is the removal of a condom during sexual intercourse without the consent of one's partner. Despite considerable media attention devoted to the trend, limited empirical research has examined how women experienced stealthing. This study aimed to contribute toward generating empirical evidence to guide the discussion surrounding stealthing. It is the first empirical research at a national level in Brazil. An online survey was conducted among 2275 women over 18 who experienced stealthing. The study analyzes these women's sociodemographic profiles and how they experienced stealthing. Most were white, young, had a religion, were highly educated, and belonged to the Brazilian middle class. They usually experienced stealthing during their youth, and the perpetrator was a cisgender man. Most of them did not look for the morning-after pill and post-exposure prophylaxis after the occurrence and never told anyone about this experience. They stated that the perpetrator should be punished. Women reported contracting sexually transmitted infections, experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, or having an illegal abortion. In conclusion, the high incidence of stealthing in the country is notable, which should generate more discussions at academic and legal levels, creating specific laws on the subject so that victims could have more support. Background Epidemiological studies have shown inconsistent results regarding the link between smoking and breast cancer risk, despite the biological plausibility of a positive association. Methods Participants were 166 611 women from nine prospective cohort studies in Japan which launched in 1984–1994 and followed for 8–22 years. Information on smoking and secondhand smoke was obtained through self-administered baseline questionnaires. Breast cancer was defined as code C50 according to the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, 3rd Edition or the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision. After adjusting for several potential confounders, relative risks for breast cancer were calculated in the individual studies according to the current or previous status of active and passive smoking using Cox regression, followed by a summary estimate of hazard ratios using random-effects meta-analyses. Results Of the 60 441 participants who reported being premenopausal and 106 170 who reported being postmenopausal at baseline, 897 and 1168 developed breast cancer during follow-up, respectively. Compared with never smokers, current smokers had a higher risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 50 years. In addition, ever smokers who started smoking at 30 years of age or younger, or who started smoking before first childbirth, had a higher risk of developing breast cancer before the age of 50 years. No association between adulthood or childhood exposure to secondhand smoke and breast cancer was observed. Conclusion Smoking may increase the risk of premenopausal breast cancer, and smoking earlier in life might be especially harmful. The impact of secondhand smoke needs further investigation. INTRODUCTION Children are vulnerable to secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, especially those with lower socioeconomic status. This study assesses the changes in prevalence and socioeconomic inequalities in SHS exposure in children younger than 12 years old in Spain between 2016 and 2019. METHODS We conducted two cross-sectional studies among representative samples of households with children aged <12 years in Spain, in 2016 (n=2411) and 2019 (n=2412). Families were interviewed to assess children's SHS exposure in private settings and outdoor public venues and their adoption of home and car smoke-free rules. We used the education level of the home main earner as a proxy for socioeconomic position. Changes over time in the prevalence and socioeconomic inequalities of SHS exposure and smoke-free rules were estimated through adjusted Poisson regression models with robust variance according to sociodemographic covariates (adjusted prevalence ratios, APRs). RESULTS In 2019, 70.5% of children were exposed to SHS in Spain. No changes between 2016 and 2019 were found for overall SHS exposure, exposure at home, and at school entrances. SHS exposure increased at public transport stations (APR=1.24; 95% CI: 1.03-1.49) and outdoor hospitality venues (APR=1.17; 95% CI: 1.07-1.29) while it decreased in cars (APR=0.74; 95% CI: 0.56-0.98) and parks (APR=0.87; 95% CI: 0.77-0.98). Households with lower education level had higher prevalence of SHS exposure at home in 2019 compared with those with university studies (primary: APR=1.30; 95% CI: 1.11-1.51; secondary: APR=1.12; 95% CI: 1.00-1.25) and were less likely to adopt home indoor smoke-free rules (primary: APR=0.88; 95% CI: 0.79-0.99; secondary: APR=0.95; 95% CI: 0.89-1.02). Socioeconomic inequalities in SHS exposure at home persisted between 2016 and 2019 (p>0.05), while decreased in smoke-free rules in cars (p=0.039). CONCLUSIONS Reported SHS exposure among children in Spain remained high between 2016 and 2019.
