The geographic provenance of minerals provides key insights into a range of geologic problems, including the source of gem materials. The tourmaline supergroup is unparalleled in its ability to record and preserve extensive chemical signatures of its formational environment. To evaluate the likelihood that tourmalines of similar compositions from separate geographic localities could be differentiated, a multivariate statistical approach has been utilized on two complementary data sets. These chemical analytical data sets of copper-bearing "Paraíba" tourmaline include data sets acquired with Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Fifty-four samples of copper-bearing tourmalines from known source locations from Brazil (São José de Batalha of Paraíba state and the neighboring Rio Grande do Norte state), Mozambique, and Nigeria, were analyzed using LIBS with a subset of these samples analyzed by EMP. Data sets obtained by each method were evaluated with multivariate statistics (PCA, PLSR). Although the sample set is limited, sequential PLSR modeling of the spectra clearly distinguished the four localities with high success: >95% for LIBS and >87% for EMP. The statistical analyses of the two techniques, LIBS and EMP, suggest that each technique emphasizes different elements for discrimination when considered in the context of the available data. The elements Cu, Mn, Fe, Mg, Ti, Zn, K, H, Co, and V were significant in LIBS chemometric models. Statistically significant elements in EMP models were Mn, Cu, Al, Ca, K, and F. Each technique results in a robust determination for geographic provenance of tourmalines with comparable compositions. The significant distinguishing chemical elements reflect geochemical distinctions in each host environment that are imparted on the tourmaline. Multivariate statistics applied to LIBS and EMP data provide an effective tool for provenance discrimination of Paraíba tourmalines, distinguishing Brazilian-sourced samples from African-sourced materials. These data provide new methods for separating the geographic origin of minerals with very similar composition such as demonstrated here for copper-bearing tourmalines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new termite species, Cryptotermes pugnus sp. nov., is described from northeastern Brazil. The winged imago of C. pugnus is distinguished from most congeners by the lack of arolia and the multiple branches connecting the median vein to the radial sector. The soldier is unique among South American Cryptotermes by its cuboidal head capsule and very rugose postclypeus. The new species constitutes the fourteenth Cryptotermes species on the continent for which we provide a key to soldiers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

COVID-19 , *RETROSPECTIVE studies , *INTERNATIONAL tourism , *DEATH rate , *COVID-19 pandemic - Abstract
Northeast Brazil is a region with great international tourist potential. Among the states that make up this region, Paraíba stands out due to the presence of vulnerable groups and factors that contribute to adverse outcomes of COVID-19. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological data on the incidence, mortality, and case fatality of COVID-19 in Paraíba. An ecological, population-based study was performed, with data extracted from the Brazilian Ministry of Health database. All cases and deaths from COVID-19 from March 2020 to December 2022 were included. The time series was built by applying the Prais–Winsten regression model, and the daily percent change was calculated to analyze the trends. The highest case fatality of the entire period was in April 2020 (7.8%), but in March 2021, the state broke the dismal record of 1248 deaths and the highest mortality rate (30.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants). Stationary mortality and case fatality were better in 2022; however, in February 2022, the mortality rate was at levels similar to the same month of the previous year. These results illustrate that COVID-19 is evolving and needs to be constantly monitored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper records the invasive gastropod Melanoides tuberculata in a limnetic ecosystem located in integral protection area in the semiarid region of the state of Paraíba in northeast Brazil. Live individuals were collected and photographed along shallow margins of the Piranhas Reservoir associated with different types of substrates. Photographic quadrants were used to calculate the number of living individuals and empty shells on different substrates. Individuals of M. tuberculata were found at five sampling sites in the littoral zone on different types of substrates with densities ranging of 13 ind.(m2)-1 to 22 ind.(m2)-1. The average density of individuals was: 18 ind.(m2)-1 on thin sediment, 15 ind.(m2)-1 on gravel and 20 ind.(m2)-1 on rocks. Empty shells were extremely abundant in the terrestrial zone of the reservoir. We did not observe native species of freshwater molluscs in the marginal areas of the reservoir in which the specimens of M. tuberculata were found. Knowledge about the distribution, establishment and impact caused of M. tuberculata in limnetic ecosystems of the Brazilian semi-arid region needs to be better studied in order to ascertain the degree of impact on native species and environmental modifications that reflect negatively on ecosystems.

- Abstract
In this article, I present some results of the postdoctoral research conducted from September 2021 to August 2023 at the Centro de Estudos Sociais of the Universidade de Coimbra, under the supervision of Professor Marta Araújo. I discuss trauma memory/resistance memories (Vecchi, 2020), territory, decolonial museum (Vergès, 2017), and oralituras (Leda Maria Martins, 2003), concepts/approaches that help us think about the patrimonialization of culture, anti-racist education, and narratives of terreiro peoples about and from cities. I traverse the narrative of violence against terreiro peoples in the city of João Pessoa, Paraíba, taking as examples the acts of vandalism against the statue of Iemanjá, the Santinha, erected on Cabo Branco beach, the easternmost point of the Americas. Along this path, I present questions and some proposals to think about cities as theaters of memory or as forums (Rahul Rao, 2016), and narratives of women, primarily, as guides for the journey. The surroundings of João Pessoa square have buildings and monuments of undeniable political, cultural, historical and artistic importance, some dating back to the beginning of the foundation of the city. The Court of the Justice and Jesuit set stand out, attracting a large flow of tourists. In the center of the square, the monument to João Pessoa was erected, formed by a granite that does not exist in situ in the municipality. Other varied and rare lytic types decorate these buildings internally. Its constructions, human settlements, uses of land and sea, among other apparatuses are consequences of certain natural conditions ideal for the creation of human labor, which resulted in the urban expansion of João Pessoa city. In this work an integrated evaluation was made between the diverse elements of the geodiversity and the heritage in question, through the analysis of documentation produced during the colonial period, in the form of texts, letters and iconographies and field work, since this relation still is practically without research and dissemination, in an interdisciplinary dialogue between geodiversity and culture.

DROUGHTS , *DROUGHT management , *RAINFALL , *ARID regions , *REMOTE sensing - Abstract
Although droughts can inflict extreme damage on populations, few studies have characterized drought events in arid and semiarid regions around the globe due to the lack of reliable data. Therefore, precipitation estimates from remote sensing satellites have been increasingly used. In this study, the performance of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite rainfall estimates in monitoring the spatiotemporal patterns of drought at multiple time scales over Paraíba state is evaluated. The drought events are characterized by their quantity, duration, severity, intensity, frequency, and percentage of the area affected, and analyses are performed both for individual points and for four mesoregions at eight different time scales. The results indicate that short-term drought events occur more frequently but are less long-lasting and severe than long-term drought events. On the other hand, relevant changes in the average intensity of events cannot be identified among the time scales. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The state of Paraíba in northeast Brazil contains four of the seven biomes present in the country: Mata Atlântica, Cerrado, Caatinga and Matas Serranas. On the other hand, Amazônia, Pantanal and Pampa were not found in this area. This special situation allows us to analyse changes in the distribution of these four large Brazilian biomes according to bioclimatic conditions, using the methodology of bioclimatic regime types. Based on the analysis of variables from periods of hydric and thermal vegetation stagnation, obtained from hydric and bioclimatic balances, average monthly temperature and rainfall, that methodology enables us to establish a typology of 27 types of bioclimatic regimes and 243 bioclimatic regime subtypes with the 9 Thornthwaite ombrothermal levels. In Paraíba 4 types of bioclimatic regimes are currently identified (mesophyllo, tropophyllo, xerophyllo and eurythermophilous) and 9 subtypes according to ombrothermal levels. In order to analyse the changes, extreme change situations were chosen: a past scenario with the Last Glacial Maximum (40 ky); and an RCP 8.5 climate change scenario for the CMSS 4.0 model for the year 2070. This enabled 3 bioclimatic regime maps of each of the 3 aforementioned situations to be obtained, providing a map of potential distribution of the plant formations of Paraíba state according to the specific field knowledge and bioclimatic mapping obtained for the present. This paper concludes that a retrocession of the Mata Atlântica can be seen from the Last Glacial Maximum up to the present, losing its optimal bioclimatic conditions and therefore remaining in a highly fragile relict situation in the face of anthropic pressure (sugarcane cultivation and urban expansion); an advance toward 2070 of the Caatinga in its shrub form as a predominant formation is indicated by the projection of climate change in 2070 for the analysed situation, specifically resulting from anthropic pressure, in this case due to livestock activities which have affected this biome in Paraíba since the mid-19th century.

Abstract This work aimed to select semivariogram models to estimate trends in monthly precipitation in Paraiba State-Brazil using ordinary kriging. The methodology involves the application of geostatistical interpolation of precipitation records of 51 years from 69 rainfall stations across the state. Analysis of semivariograms showed that specific months had a strong spatial dependence (Index of Spatial Dependence - IDE < 25%). The trends were subjected to the following models: circular, spherical, pentaspherical, exponential, Gaussian, rational quadratic, K-Bessel and tetraspherical. The best fit models were selected by cross-validation and Error Comparison Index (ECI). Each data set (month) had a particular spatial dependence structure, which made it necessary to define specific models of semivariogram in order to enhance the adjustment of the experimental semivariogram. Besides, the monthly trend map was plotted to justify the chosen models.

Geotouristic itineraries are important tools for the dissemination of geosciences because they work as outdoor field classes for teaching about the physical phenomena associated with the landscape in question, including the cultural one. Coastal environments are areas of great geotouristic potential precisely for this natural dynamics that give them its scientific value. The South coast of the State of Paraíba belongs to the geomorphologic unit of Plains and Coastal Tablelands, having direct relation with ancient tectonic movements, generated during the drift of the South American and African Plates, added to Cenozoic tectonic events. This article proposes a geotouristic itinerary that includes seven places of geotouristic interest. As a methodological path, the phases were the bibliographic research about the physical and cultural aspects of the area, an inventory of places of interest and their quantitative assessment. The places of interest are Amor Rock, Tombolo of Coqueirinho, Canyon of Coqueirinho, Cones of Dejection of Coqueirinho, Coqueirinho Structural High, Tambaba Beach and ‘Maceió’ of Mucatu. The existence of interpretative trails assigns a new function, now from the geotouristic point of view, to the itineraries, as they enrich the experience of tourists, to whom is given the opportunity of knowing the abiotic heritage and the cultural heritage from another perspective, apart from enhancing their environmental awareness. The geotouristic itineraries also serve to promote geotourism as an asset, inserting in the traditional tourist context information about the previously forgotten abiotic environment. The 'sun and sea' is the main tourist attraction of the region, allied in a secondary level to a rich history and culture that neglects the latent geotouristic potential. Therefore, mass tourism will be promoted for a niche tourism, becoming more sustainable under the environmental bias.

BIGNONIACEAE , *PUBLIC records , *LIANAS - Abstract
The tribe Bignonieae with approximately 393 species, represents the largest tribe of Bignoniaceae. Most members of Bignonieae are tendrillate lianas, although some shrubs are also found within this clade. The Pico do Jabre, located at 1,197 m of altitude, represents the highest mountain in the state of Paraíba (Brazil) and an area of extreme biological importance. We conducted an inventory of the Bignonieae from the Pico do Jabre. We documented eight genera and 13 species, only Tanaecium parviflorum is a shrub. The most diverse genera recorded are: Tanaecium (3 spp.), Amphilophium (2 spp.), Bignonia (2 spp.) and Xylophragma (2 spp.). Anemopaegma, Cuspidaria, Dolichandra and Pyrostegia are represented by a single species each. Six species are new records for the region (i.e., Bignonia ramentacea, B. sciuripabulum, Tanaecium cyrtanthum, T. dichotomum, Xylophragma harleyi and X. heterocalyx). Tanaecium cyrtanthum, X. harleyi and X. heterocalyx are new records for the state of Paraíba. Prior to this study, Xylophragma heterocalyx was only known from the type specimen, from Minas Gerais, representing a new record for the Caatinga. The high number of new records found in this study highlights the importance of regional floristic inventories for the documentation of new species occurrences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Species in the Adelophryne genus consist of diminutive, agile, and secretive frogs that inhabit forest leaf litter and have direct development. Species richness within Adelophryne was previously underestimated, and several new species have recently been described. Here, we describe a new species of Adelophryne from the Atlantic Forest in the Brazilian states of Alagoas, Pernambuco, and Paraíba. The new species is characterized by its small body size, small and distinct tympanum, toes with subarticular tubercles, fingers mucronate, three phalanges in the Finger IV, and an advertisement call composed of one single pulsed note with a high dominant frequency. The new species is phylogenetically related to other Adelophryne species of the Northern Atlantic Forest Clade and is endemic to the "Pernambuco Endemism Center" in the Atlantic Forest biodiversity hotspot.

CONTACT lenses , *ORTHOKERATOLOGY , *BIOFILMS , *MICROORGANISMS , *GENTIAN violet , *ULTRASONIC imaging - Abstract
PURPOSE: Certain ocular resident or pathogenic microbes may remain viable in the presence of multi-purpose disinfectant solutions (MPDSs), subsequently developing biofilms inside contact lens storage cases (CLSCs) which pose a risk of infection to wearers. This study evaluated the formation of ocular microbiota biofilms exposed to three top selling MPDS. METHODS: Crystal violet assay was carried out for the verification of biofilm formation. The in vitro assays evaluated Pseudomonas aeruginosa UFPEDA 416 and Staphylococcus aureus UFPEDA 02 exposure of 48 h to MPDS, as well as the use of 40 KHz ultrasound at the beginning and with 24 h immersion in the MPDS. Subsequently, in vivo assays evaluated the formation of microbial biofilms on the CLSC walls containing silicone-hydrogel contact lenses immersed in MPDS from 15 healthy volunteer patients, who had been wearing the lenses for 7 days. RESULTS: Biofilms were inhibited by 26%–98% in the in vitro assays, with a statistically significant difference only for P. aeruginosa UFPEDA 416 exposed to diluted MPDS. Most inhibitions occurred moderately and weakly. In addition, adherent cells were detected in more than 90% of the tests. Biofilm was not inhibited in more than one third of the results, nor was it disturbed, especially with the ultrasound treatments. The average of obtained optical densities at 590 nm was between 0.6 and 0.8 in the in vivo assays. The results were similar between the CLSC right and left wells. There was a correlation between microbial biofilm formation and the type of MPDS tested, with statistical difference between the three treatments. CONCLUSION: MPDS promoted a partial inhibition of microbial biofilm formation but only one MPDS proved to be more effective in vitro and in vivo. This study, however, could not distinguish the effect of possible errors in the good hygiene practices of the users. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Education is a crucial factor in the behavior and development of a society. For this reason, it is important to analyze the dynamics of the public sector in the provision of education services. Within this context, the present study aims to analyze the efficiency of the municipal expenses of Paraíba in terms of its basic elementary education. To this end, a stochastic frontier model was used, taking as a result the scores obtained in the Index of Development of Basic Education (IDEB) in the years 2011, 2013, and 2015. The results demonstrated that all indicators are statistically accepted and that the variables “age-grade distortion,” “higher education teachers,” and “number of computers per student” were consistent with the literature. Expenditure has a negative effect on educational performance, suggesting that municipalities in Paraíba are inefficient in allocating resources.

With the approval of the Law 13.415/2017 that changed the Brazilian secondary school and allowed greater flexibilization on its subjects and curricular content to be available on the educational offer, the state education networks underwent building curricular proposals oriented by the Base Nacional Comum Curricular. This paper aims to analyze the initial implementation paths of the curricular proposal under discussion in the state of Paraíba, compared to the already completed elaboration of the state of São Paulo. Built with Apple and Gramsci theoretical basis, the paper seeks, in the first place, to apprehend the meaning of the race of hegemony in the field of the educational reformation, based on the power relations in the elaboration of the curriculum, as well as the influence of the neoliberal mindset on these reformations. Secondly, this paper undertakes a comparative analysis of the proposals between the two state education networks, focusing on the area of Humanities and Social Sciences, for methodological purposes. Within this comparison, it shows divergence amongst the two curriculum formulations, although they have the national reformation policy, due to its different approaches -- São Paulo taking more of an operational driven guideline, whereas the state of Paraíba proceeded with a more pluralist vision of schoolar curriculum.
