This thesis closely examines an understudied but widely-circulated medieval work known as the Expositio regulae beati Augustini (Commentary on the Rule of Augustine) composed by Humbert of Romans (c. 1200–77), the fifth Master of the Order of Friars Preachers (Dominicans). More specifically, it considers the historical context and controversy that prompted Humbert to write the Expositio, its relationship to the internal and external challenges facing the friars, and the extent to which Humbert consciously reinterpreted Augustine’s Rule in order to shape the behaviour and institutional culture of the friars during a crucial stage in the consolidation of the Order’s self-understanding and collective identity. While the Expositio has typically been interpreted as an apologia in defence of the Rule’s merits, its role as a tool of socialisation aimed at creating a corporate culture and inculcating a sense of distinctiveness has not yet been thoroughly explored. Building upon the work of other scholars, this thesis provides an extended examination of the Expositio, scrutinising the Expositio not only in light of its immediate context but also as part of the long reception history of Augustine’s Rule in the Middle Ages. Along with seeking to better understand Humbert’s goals in authoring the text, the contents of the Expositio are also examined with different questions than have typically been asked, probing their role in shaping the social behaviour, discipline, and self-policing of the friars. Finally, consideration is given to its historical impact, which appears to have been greatest long after Humbert’s death, during the ‘observant movement’ of the late-fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Evidence also suggests that the Expositio was widely read outside the Dominican Order during this period, shedding further light on the reception history of Augustine’s Rule.

St. Thomas’s commentary on the Book of Psalms, known as the Postilla super Psalmos, gives us a privileged insight into the mind and heart of a Dominican friar and theologian at work and at prayer. In this contribution I will elucidate these claims on the basis of elements found in his commentary and in particular in the areas of (1) prayer and the liturgy, (2) Christ, Mary and the Church, (3) Sin and Mercy and (4) Contemplation and Preaching.

- Abstract
The purpose of this article is to present an unpublished document: «Relation made by the nuns of the convent of Santa Catharina de Sena in the city of San Francisco de Quito, province of Peru, in the Indies», guarded by the Bartolomé March Library in Palma de Mallorca. The report succinctly describes a case that caused enormous scandal in 1679: the flee of the nuns from the convent of Saint Catherine of Siena in Quito to place themselves under the protection of ordinary justice and thus avoid continuing to be mistreated by the prior of the order of the Preachers of Quito.

The analysis of the link between Sancho iv and María de Molina with the Mendicant Orders shows their preference for the Order of Preachers. This article analyzes that relationship from the point of view of the promotion of convents and monasteries, trying to reveal the keys to the royal model and the political culture promoted by both monarchs. Their relationships with Dominican establishments are analyzed separately because both of them took similar forms and shared objectives, but also showed notable differences. Another characteristic aspect was the development of a courtly culture in a Dominican key. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzes the contribution of the first Dominicans to medieval pedagogy, through the pedagogical work of Vicente de Beauvais. His pedagogical works, although they are wide and very varied, focus on four core themes: history as a method of knowledge, the ideal of wisdom, the figures of the teacher and the disciple, and health education. Topics that served to turn pedagogy into a science, mark the pedagogy of the thirteenth century and serve as a bridge between classical pedagogy and humanist education. The research is supported by the study of four key pedagogical works: Libellus apologeticus, Speculum naturale, Speculum doctrinale and De eruditione filiorum nobilium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to deeply explore the role played by the various components of the feast in the complex relations between Jesuits and Dominicans in Manila in the second half of the 17th century, with special regard for theater, ephemeral art, and sacred oratory. Far from being trivial, this question is part of the "battle for propaganda" that ultimately resolves quotas of spiritual and temporal power, an issue that will become thornier with the appointment in 1677 of the Dominican Felipe Pardo as Archbishop of Manila and his manifest animosity to the Society of Jesus. - Abstract
The question of voluntary poverty has been present in the history of mendicant orders since their foundation. This article explores, through the study of practical sources (account registers) of Dominican convents and monasteries in Tuscany, the effective application of this poverty, and its interpretation. The examination of these documents highlights the networks of relationships created by the exercise of poverty: economic and spiritual links that unite friars and nuns, communities of regulars and pious establishments (hospitals), religious and laity. Moreover, by crossing the point of view of friars and nuns, but also of observants and conventuals, this article highlights the variety of interpretations of the notion of poverty within the Dominican order, and its evolution., La question de la pauvreté volontaire traverse l’histoire des ordres mendiants depuis leur fondation. By the time of his death in 1280 Albert the Great was respected not only as a theologian and philosopher, but also as one of the greatest authorities on astrology in the West. Such expertise rarely gains plaudits today, but in late medieval Europe knowledge of esoteric pursuits was held in high regard. This is why Dominicans not only did nothing to challenge the growth of the “Albert Legend,” that Albert had mastered all magical and esoteric topics, but also promoted this myth. By promoting this legend, they bolstered and legitimized the reputation of the Order of Preachers.

The academic study of religion in Nigerian tertiary institutions started about 1948 at the then University College of London, Ibadan, when the British Methodist minister/missionary Geoffrey Parrinder (10.04.1910-16.06.2005) established and headed the Department of Religious Studies. It was clearly theologically inclined as the principal scholars were either European missionaries or members of the local Christian clergy. The work Joseph Kenny, a Dominican priest – originally American by birth and a Nigerian citizen by naturalisation — marked a significant departure from theologically focused religious studies to the comparative study of religions. Kenny came to Nigeria in 1964, started teaching at the Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Major Seminary in Ibadan in 1971, and subsequently joined the Department of Religious Studies, the University of Ibadan, as a lecturer in 1979. He worked across three major religious traditions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam – evidently the only scholar to achieve a mastery of all the three traditions – exploring common themes, translations and theologies and their implications for religious dialogue in Africa where indigenous religious cosmologies underpin the cultural structures and ontologies. This paper explores the significance of religion scholarship as pioneered by a scholar who is both an insider and an outsider, and who mentored many African scholars of religion and members of the local clergy for more than two decades from 1979 to 2002 when he retired as a professor at the University of Ibadan.

Modern Aramaic manuscripts belonging to Chaldean and Catholic institutions of northern Iraq are becoming available in digitized copies thanks to the Iraqi Digital Center for Eastern Manuscripts and the Hill Museum & Manuscript Library. A first overview of the contents of these manuscripts shows both the strategies and the outcomes of an inexorable process of acculturation toward Catholicism that took place among East Syriac Christians in the Mosul region during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This paper illustrates this process, focusing on the use of Modern Aramaic to promote European ideas and devotions in northern Iraq and on Jacques Rhétoré OP (1841-1921) as a key figure in the missionary activities. His bilingual – French and Aramaic – La Montagnarde chaldéenne et l’ange celebrates the missionaries’ efforts to rescue the Chaldean “primitive nation” from the error of Nestorianism, fighting against Muslim oppression and the competing appeal of Protestant missions.

The Legenda Beati Petri Gundisalvi was written in the thirteenth century and presents episodes of the life and miraculous deeds attributed to the Dominican Peter González (1190 (?) - 1246). Though often mentioned by the biographers of the Saint, this work has not yet been the subject of a critical edition or of a systematic analysis. Thus, there are many questions related to its production. In this article, this Vita is compared to the Legenda vita Sancti Dominici, hagiography dedicated to Dominic de Guzmán, considered the founder of the Dominican Order. It was the first text written after the papal canonization of Dominic, in the second half of the 1230s, and is attributed to Pedro Ferrando. The focus is on the treatment given to the education of Peter González and of Dominic de Guzmán in these texts. The objective is to identify and to debate whether these works share the same perspective on studying, contributing to the discussion about the formation of a Dominican identity during the thirteenth century.

- Abstract
peer-reviewed, Only a handful of liturgical books survive from the English Dominican Province, and only one contains musical notation. Consequently, it is difficult to make any generalisations about English Dominican liturgical and musical practices, and to ascertain the extent to which houses in this province followed or deviated from Order-wide norms. Nonetheless, an examination of the sole musical witness (Oxford, Bodleian, Rawl. liturg. G. 13, a sequentiary dating from c. 1300) opens a window into the needs of one English cantor, revealing both conformity with the standard authorised repertory of Dominican sequences, and a degree of local creativity and adaptation in the form of a section of supplementary material, much of which was used for Marian devotion. Stepping back from the close reading of this Mass book, the second part of this chapter considers the Dominican Office liturgy with regards to its similarities to liturgical practices in the British Isles., ACCEPTED, Peer reviewed

- Abstract
This article refers to the experience of the French Dominican friars of the province of Toulouse in Montevideo, and in the River Plate region, which began in the mid-20th century. In the study of the origins, development and exhaustion of the French Dominican project in Uruguay, become evident the complexity of this human and religious experience and the multiplicity of factors that influenced its history. This complexity was also increased by the profound changes that took place in Latin America during these decades, in the universal Church and in religious life. We will focus especially on what we call the “Dominican glances” in relation to Latin America, the Southern Cone and Uruguay. On the one hand, there was in some friars a possible excessive confidence in the contributions that a group of French religious could make in Latin America. On the other hand, we can appreciate in what way, life in Uruguay and contacts with Ibero-American cultures were transforming the vision and life of each friar. Specifically, the positions varied from the comfort and appreciation of the beginnings, to positions of discontent, fatigue, annoyance - linked to the questioning of the Spanish and Italian roots of the region - to disdain, in some cases, when pastoral illusions focused on Peru and Mexico, considering these two countries as “a more authentic Latin America.”, Este artículo se refiere a la experiencia de los frailes dominicos franceses de la provincia de Toulouse en Montevideo, y en la región rioplatense, que se inició a mediados del siglo XX.

Abstract: This article analyzes the role of women and the Virgin Mary in the vision of the Dominican friar of the XVII century, Fray Pedro de Santa María y Ulloa, the highest representative of the devotion to the Marian prayer in the Spain of this century. After introducing briefly a biography of this historical personage and the long theological dispute about the importance of the Virgin Mary in the Christian thought; we concluded that although the traditional thinking of this Dominican friar, maintained the classic ideology of gender roles so typical of the Catholic Church, the extreme importance that Santa María y Ulloa gave to the image of Mary was a small step that allowed that women had a greater significance in the catholic religion.

- Abstract
This paper aims to present a general outline of the institution of the Order of the Preachers' convents in the Kingdom of Naples between the 13th and 14th centuries. Our documentation is composed of: Frederick II's Letter to the dominicans, the acts of the general and provincial Chapters, Bernard Gui's reports on the founding and division of convents in the provinces of the Order and pontifical documents (Papal bulls). Our method consists of three parts: characterizing the variety of documentation used; identify information on the institution of convents in Southern Italy and analyze data drawn from documentation in order to compose an approximate landscape of the possible relations of the friars and the angevin court with the Papacy. The historiography available was employed as a means of delimiting possible interpretations drawn from the data revealed by the chosen documentation. Our conclusion points to a complex articulation of Preachers, the House of Anjou and the Papacy, both in the conflagration as well as in the resolution of conflicts, mainly from 1260 onwards. - Abstract
Between 1221 and 1236, Jordan of Saxony, the general master of the Order of Friars Preachers, and Diana Andaló, nun of the monastery of St. Agnes in Bologna, were frequent correspondents. From the exchange of epistles that characterized their friendship, only a few dozen letters written by the friar reached us. In them we can see the growth of the Order in those early years of its institution, its gradual organization as well as the policy of the master in relation to women's religious life, among allusions to the details of everyday life of a religious in the thirteenth century. It is in this documentary corpus that we support ourselves to comprehend the power relations which guided the process of institutionalization of the newly created Order of Friars Preachers, specially the affiliation of women's houses, a subject on which the friars oscillated between resistance and acceptance, because of the material and administrative implications that such an association meant. We will focus, in the discursive analysis, in three cards - two sent to Diana, and one sent to the provincial of Lombardy, Stephen of Spain - to understand the issues involved in the formation of a women's branch of the Order. We can conclude that this specific discussion comprehended a much bigger cenary of internal disputes for the control of the Order. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This article analyzes the role of women and the Virgin Mary in the vision of the Dominican friar of the XVII century, Fray Pedro de Santa María y Ulloa, the highest representative of the devotion to the Marian prayer in the Spain of this century. Abstract: The presence of the Order of Preachers in the future Betica Province runs in parallel to the processes of conquest and repopulation of the territories by the Castilla Kingdom between the 13th and 15th Centuries. We analyse the processes of Convent foundation, the growth of its first schools, its links with monarchy, nobility and social groups in the different territories until the creation of the Betica Province. In addition to this, we study its adequacy to the challenge that the incorporation of the American territories into the Castilla Kingdom meant, and the need of pastoral work for the population in the new territories.

This article clears several historiographical errors related to the founding of the convent of the Order of Preachers settled in the city of Chinchilla (Castile). It also clarifies some of its founding circumstances and delves into the influence that the creation of political factions during the 15th century exerted on that religious community. Likewise, it is exposed how the friars played an influen-ce as an element that ensured a continuous monetary flow from the surrounding countryside to the city of Chinchilla. Although well known in the case of Poor Clares or Cistercian nuns, the development of Corpus Christi devotion and liturgy in the Dominican nunneries has not been hitherto studied. This article analyzes these issues in the particular case of Dominican nuns in medieval Castile. The article discusses the role of these women in the development of devotional and liturgical performance, the artistic and architectonic consequences and peculiarities of the devotion of Corpus Christi, the changes in monastic spaces that resulted from it, and, finally, the use of Corpus Christi as a means of empowerment by some aristocratic nuns and foundresses. - Abstract
The rosary is an important sign of missionary identity for the Dominican Order, whose use has not been limited to the convent since the 16th century when preach and devotion became universal. Dominic monks preach the rosary in all their missions and found several brotherhoods affiliated with the Order in parishes and diocesans churches, but in the 17th century the Hail Mary can be found outside sacred places, it is preached even in the streets. This process end up in the 18 th century when common people take a bigger responsibility and continue with the mission started by Dominic monks. Zafra, situated at the limit of the Baetica Province, becomes the stage of this Popular Mission thanks to the dawn rosary and its brotherhood, which clearly was a corporation dedicated to the mission and the assistant of people in need. This brotherhood does not hesitate before giving majority of age to the women in their government, even though they faced a strong social exclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Legenda Beati Petri Gundisalvi was written in the thirteenth century and presents episodes of the life and miraculous deeds attributed to the Dominican Peter González (1190 - 1246). 47. Anti-Modernism and the elective affinity between politics and philosophy.
- Abstract
INTRODUCTORY COMMENTS There are two truisms about politics and philosophy. The first is that politics bears upon the totality of philosophy. The second is that philosophy bears upon the totality of politics. However, a person can press either to the point of falsehood and foolishness. For example, one can press the first to the point of claiming that politics will explain the whole of philosophy, or one can press the second to the point of claiming that philosophy will explain the whole of politics. And the closer one comes to pressing either truism to its extreme, the closer one comes to falsehood and foolishness. The reality of the connection between politics and philosophy is, in fact, extremely complex. My objective in the present article is to show just how complex the connection can be by tracing the work of two major Catholic philosophers of the twentieth century, Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange and Jacques Maritain. I select them in particular because of their interest and my interest in the Modernist controversy within the Roman Catholic Church at the beginning of the century and because in their lives politics and philosophy affected each other throughout a long and significant personal relationship. When I say that my objective is “to show just how complex the connection can be,” I have in mind showing both the extent of the variety and the degree of the complexity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. English Catholicism and Modernism.
- Abstract
Friedrich von Hügel (1852–1925) and Maude Petre (1863–1942) were deeply committed Roman Catholic lay persons who saw the need for reform in the Catholic Church and worked toward that end. They did so while maintaining a remarkable openness to members of other Christian churches and other religions. Each spent considerable time in France and Italy, but for both England was home. Petre belonged to an old English Catholic family, while von Hügel, who had been born in Florence and remained an Austrian citizen until 1914, lived most of his life in England. The church was the primary focus of their lives and their writing. Both were major actors in the development of what became known as Roman Catholic Modernism and particularly in the drama surrounding George Tyrrell's brief and brilliant career and untimely death. This paper focuses on English Catholicism between 1890 and 1910, crucial years in the history of the Catholic Church in England and in the lives of both von Hügel and Petre. During these transitional years, that church was coming to a new sense of itself. It ceased to be a “missionary outpost” and became “more Roman.” Against this changing background von Hügel and Petre resolutely maintained their Catholic identity. While some have considered them to be only marginally Catholic, they considered their lives to be shaped decisively by their Catholicism. Although both were uncomfortable with the form English Catholicism was taking between 1890 and 1910, their understanding of Catholicism was broad enough and deep enough to sustain their Catholic identity – an identity that was at once both critical and faithful. The first monasteries founded by the Dominicans in the Iberian Peninsula, reflect, in its genesis, the important influence that the Friars Preachers would exert in this region, with great prestige not only among the poorest population, but also among the Portuguese court. During the beginning of the Avis dynasty they received from John I in 1388, the administration of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, or Battle, which is an monumental architectural complex, international project to promote a political image.
