Adopting pollution prevention strategies (PPS) can ensure environmental sustainability (ES) in the leather industry and can help the industry achieve several sustainable development goals (SDGs). In order to ensure the ES of the leather industry, there is a need for research to identify a comprehensive list of PPS. This research aims at identifying the most effective PPS for the leather industry, which are categorized into 4R (reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover) dimensions. This is a case study where four leather processing companies from Bangladesh were purposively selected. Through an extensive literature review and experts’ opinions, 21 PPS are identified for the leather industry’s ES. Also, this study shows several benefits of PPS through which various SDGs can be achieved in the leather industry. This study will certainly guide the leather industry managers to ensure the ES of the leather industry and, consequently, assist in achieving several SDGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 21st century is the century of environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change. Climate change will condition public policies and private actions throughout the world to achieve the objective of reducing emissions enhanced in international agreements (Kyoto, Paris). The objective of this article is to carry out a review of the already verified effects of climate change in the Mediterranean region, as well as the adaptation and mitigation measures in the short-medium term to face global warming, such as the adaptation of urban spaces (local scale), and the improvement of teaching about this phenomenon. According to the 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically n.13 ("Action for the climate"), it establishes two main actions that countries must complete by 2030: the approval of laws and mitigation and adaptation plans, and the implementation of educational programs. SUSTAINABLE development , *JUSTICE , *FAILED states , *CONTINENTS , *PEACE movements , *TERRORIST organizations ,AFRICA-United States relations - Abstract
Since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, the United Nations has been actively disseminating seventeen (17) sustainable development goals (SDGs). The agenda calls for global partnerships for what it called "peace and prosperity for people and the planet". SDG number sixteen (16) seeks to promote peace, justice and institutional efficiency. This seems to be a long and complex process when it comes to Africa. The African continent is the most fragile in terms of sustainable development given that most of its regions are conflict-torn. When it comes to peace and stability as a prerequisite to sustainable development, it is clear that the northern, western, and Horn regions are now the most unstable in the whole continent. Amidst all this, the United States Africa Command was created in 2007 to safeguard peace, bring stability and provide prosperity in the region. Drawing on source materials, mainly from the US Department of Defense and its Africa Center for Strategic Studies (ACSS), along with the AFRICOM Posture Statements to Congress of 2018 through 2022, this paper argues that the creation of the US Africa Command did not achieve any of the set mission goals. To the contrary, it was an attraction factor to terrorist groups which spread all over the region. Through several datasets, the paper also shows that more threats became imminent and more countries were plunged into bloodshed. More failed states in the region would make it impossible for the implementation of any of the 2030 Agenda's SDGs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

URBAN planning , *FOOD security , *SUSTAINABLE development - Abstract
This paper presents a theoretical assessment of alternative food models performance in implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to improve urban food security. It addresses the three most widely related models in the food systems' literature: The Territorialized Food System, the City-Region Food System (CRFS), and the emerging Smart Urban Food System (SUFS). Nested in the sustainable urban planning field, it assumes that a correlation exists between the urban proximity of the alternative food models and their performance in integrating the Sustainable Development Goals. The valuation is based on a multi-criteria analysis which crosses two approaches: a normative one by Sustainable Development Goals and an operational one by sustainable urban planning. The proposed method is intended to be holistic and systemic unlike existing agricultural sustainability assessment methods. Scores are interpreted by rates of adequacy of sustainable urban planning targets to the Sustainable Development Goals and of appropriation of the latter by the urban ecosystem domains. Results show different profiles of models, suggesting a functional complementarity between them. However, the Smart Urban Food System would be the best performing model with rates higher than the global minimum sustainability threshold. It is followed by the City-Region Food System, confirming then our initial hypothesis. Results discussion points out the limits of the evaluation in terms of the approach objectivity, contextualization of the analysis and applicability constraints of the Smart Urban Food System. Finally, the study opens a research perspective on the operational Smart Urban Food System modeling, for which this work is the first step. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we examine how environmental practices related to public transit and urban green space use are influenced by perceptions of local level environmental change, neighbourhood inhabitation, and socio-demographic factors. The analysis shows that perceptions of change and neighbourhood inhabitation offer better explanations for changing local environmental practices than socio-demographic orientations. We contribute to social practice theory by drawing attention to the interplay of environmental perceptions and neighbourhood inhabitation as factors that facilitate changing environmental practices. By gaining insight into the relationship between perceptions of change and environmental practices, we thereby learn how sustainability goals, such as those embodied by SDG11, can be translated into social practices at the community level. Integrated social accounting places social and environmental performance alongside financial performance. In the history of social accounting, it is possible to identify four waves of integrated social accounting statements: corporate social responsibility (1970s), triple bottom line (1990s), standardized reporting (2000s), and today, with the popularization of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, standardized goals. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide a common language and shared purpose for a multitude of actors, spanning networks, organizational types, and geographical levels. To illustrate the fourth wave of integrated social accounting, this article1 proposes an integrated social accounting model that focuses organizational attention on the internal and external impacts of an organization's activities through the lens of the SDGs. - Abstract
The Gaza Strip is one of the world's poorest areas in terms of water, mainly due to pollution and overexploitation of aquifers. In addition, the region has a humanitarian crisis as a result of the numerous escalations of war, the lack of food security and the lack of water and sanitation. A first conclusion is that water sharing, access and management are central to progress towards economic, social and political stability in the region. Gaza is in an unsustainable situation of permanent water scarcity, especially affecting the most vulnerable: women. A second conclusion is that, in order to improve the current situation of the right to water, it must be linked to women's rights, as well as to the strengthening of their role in negotiations and management in basic aspects for economic and social transformation in the Strip., La bande de Gaza est l'une des régions les plus pauvres du monde en eau, principalement en raison de la pollution et de la surexploitation des aquifères.

Almost a year since the universal Agenda the achieve of the goals (objectives sustainable development, OSD, 2015-30) started dawn, Spain not only drag all the ills of the international community, but adds homegrown, all irrelevance that the current caretaker government, wanted to provide to its policy of international cooperation for development over the last four years. - Abstract
South-South Cooperation (SSC) has increased and diversified over the past decades. This phenomenon, however, has not been followed by a reassessment of the normative framework that guide this form of cooperation, limiting the complementary role SSC can play in the implementation of the 2030 Development Agenda. As the scale, scope, and complexity of SSC expand, a reassessment of SSC normative framework is necessary to enhance the contribution of SSC to sustainable, inclusive development ahead of BAPA+40., La Cooperación Sur-Sur (CSS) se ha incrementado y diversificado en las últimas décadas.

Forty years after the adoption of the Buenos Aires Plan of Action (BAPA) on Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (TCDC) by the United Nations General-Assembly (UNGA), the international community has been convened to meet at Argentina’s capital city, in March 2019, to debate on the new development context and discuss South-South Cooperation (SSC) and triangular cooperation roles within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Development understanding, international cooperation practices —including SSC, and the global panorama have been substantially modified since BAPA’s adoption. This article analyzes these elements and the historical backgrounds of the 1978 BAPA adoption, and of the second High-Level Conference of the United Nations on SSC to be held in 2019., Cuarenta años después de la adopción por la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas (AGNU) del Plan de Acción de Buenos Aires (PABA) sobre la Cooperación Técnica entre Países en Desarrollo (CTPD), la comunidad internacional ha sido convocada para debatir en la capital argentina, en marzo de 2019, el nuevo contexto del desarrollo y el rol de la Cooperación Sur-Sur (CSS) en el marco de la Agenda 2030 para el desarrollo sostenible. This article proposes a holistic framework of integrated social accounting that could be adopted by all types of organizations in the social economy, as well as in other sectors. The impetus for this derives from the popularity of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the broadening of collective impact thinking. The article advances a model of integrated social accounting that brings together four dimensions: 1) resources/capitals, 2) value creation/destruction, 3) internal systems and processes, and 4) organizational learning, growth, and innovation. Organizations using this model focus on the implications of their activities through the lens of the SDGs, looking both internally and externally.
