1. Dynamic Resource Allocation for Metaverse Applications with Deep Reinforcement Learning

Abstract: This work proposes a novel framework to dynamically and effectively manage and allocate different types of resources for Metaverse applications, which are forecasted to demand massive resources of various types that have never been seen before. Specifically, by studying functions of Metaverse applications, we first propose an effective solution to divide applications into groups, namely MetaInstances, where common functions can be shared among applications to enhance resource usage efficiency. Then, to capture the real-time, dynamic, and uncertain characteristics of request arrival and application departure processes, we develop a semi-Markov decision process-based framework and propose an intelligent algorithm that can gradually learn the optimal admission policy to maximize the revenue and resource usage efficiency for the Metaverse service provider and at the same time enhance the Quality-of-Service for Metaverse users. Extensive simulation results show that our proposed approach can achieve up to 120% greater revenue for the Metaverse service providers and up to 178.9% higher acceptance probability for Metaverse application requests than those of other baselines., To be published in the Proceedings of the IEEE WCNC 2023

Abstract: Frequency-hopping (FH) joint radar-communications (JRC) can offer excellent security for integrated sensing and communication systems. However, existing JRC schemes mainly embed information using only the sub-pulse frequencies and hence the data rate is limited. In this letter, we propose to use both sub-pulse frequencies and durations for information modulation, leading to higher communication data rates. For information demodulation, we propose a novel scheme by using the time-frequency analysis (TFA) technique and a 'you only look once' (YOLO)-based detection system. As such, our system does not require channel estimation, simplifying the transmission signal frame design. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme, and show that it is robust against the Doppler shift and timing offset between the transceiver and the communication receiver.

Abstract: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)—giving infants only breast-milk for the first 6 months of life—is a component of optimal breastfeeding practices effective in preventing child morbidity and mortality. EBF practices are known to vary by population and comparable subnational estimates of prevalence and progress across low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are required for planning policy and interventions. Here we present a geospatial analysis of EBF prevalence estimates from 2000 to 2018 across 94 LMICs mapped to policy-relevant administrative units (for example, districts), quantify subnational inequalities and their changes over time, and estimate probabilities of meeting the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) of ≥70% EBF prevalence by 2030. While six LMICs are projected to meet the WHO GNT of ≥70% EBF prevalence at a national scale, only three are predicted to meet the target in all their district-level units by 2030., Bhattacharjee and Schaeffer et al. map exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) in 94 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), finding increased EBF practice and reduced subnational variation across the majority of LMICs from 2000 to 2018. However, only six LMICs will meet WHO’s target of ≥70% EBF by 2030 nationally, and only three will achieve this in all districts.

Abstract: Background Documentation of patterns and long-term trends in mortality in young people, which reflect huge changes in demographic and social determinants of adolescent health, enables identification of global investment priorities for this age group. We aimed to analyse data on the number of deaths, years of life lost, and mortality rates by sex and age group in people aged 10–24 years in 204 countries and territories from 1950 to 2019 by use of estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Methods We report trends in estimated total numbers of deaths and mortality rate per 100 000 population in young people aged 10–24 years by age group (10–14 years, 15–19 years, and 20–24 years) and sex in 204 countries and territories between 1950 and 2019 for all causes, and between 1980 and 2019 by cause of death. We analyse variation in outcomes by region, age group, and sex, and compare annual rate of change in mortality in young people aged 10–24 years with that in children aged 0–9 years from 1990 to 2019. We then analyse the association between mortality in people aged 10–24 years and socioeconomic development using the GBD Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite measure based on average national educational attainment in people older than 15 years, total fertility rate in people younger than 25 years, and income per capita. We assess the association between SDI and all-cause mortality in 2019, and analyse the ratio of observed to expected mortality by SDI using the most recent available data release (2017). Findings In 2019 there were 1·49 million deaths (95% uncertainty interval 1·39–1·59) worldwide in people aged 10–24 years, of which 61% occurred in males. 32·7% of all adolescent deaths were due to transport injuries, unintentional injuries, or interpersonal violence and conflict; 32·1% were due to communicable, nutritional, or maternal causes; 27·0% were due to non-communicable diseases; and 8·2% were due to self-harm. Since 1950, deaths in this age group decreased by 30·0% in females and 15·3% in males, and sex-based differences in mortality rate have widened in most regions of the world. Geographical variation has also increased, particularly in people aged 10–14 years. Since 1980, communicable and maternal causes of death have decreased sharply as a proportion of total deaths in most GBD super-regions, but remain some of the most common causes in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, where more than half of all adolescent deaths occur. Annual percentage decrease in all-cause mortality rate since 1990 in adolescents aged 15–19 years was 1·3% in males and 1·6% in females, almost half that of males aged 1–4 years (2·4%), and around a third less than in females aged 1–4 years (2·5%). The proportion of global deaths in people aged 0–24 years that occurred in people aged 10–24 years more than doubled between 1950 and 2019, from 9·5% to 21·6%. Interpretation Variation in adolescent mortality between countries and by sex is widening, driven by poor progress in reducing deaths in males and older adolescents. Improving global adolescent mortality will require action to address the specific vulnerabilities of this age group, which are being overlooked. Furthermore, indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to jeopardise efforts to improve health outcomes including mortality in young people aged 10–24 years. There is an urgent need to respond to the changing global burden of adolescent mortality, address inequities where they occur, and improve the availability and quality of primary mortality data in this age group. Abstract: The proliferation of wireless applications, the ever-increasing spectrum crowdedness, as well as cell densification makes the issue of interference increasingly severe in many emerging wireless applications. Most interference management/mitigation methods in the literature are problem-specific and require some cooperation/coordination between different radio frequency systems. Aiming to seek a more versatile solution to counteracting strong interference, we resort to the hybrid array of analog subarrays and suppress interference in the analog domain so as to greatly reduce the required quantization bits of the analog-to-digital converters and their power consumption. To this end, we design a real-time algorithm to steer nulls towards the interference directions and maintain flat in non-interference directions, solely using constant-modulus phase shifters. To ensure sufficient null depth for interference suppression, we also develop a two-stage method for accurately estimating interference directions. The proposed solution can be applicable to most (if not all) wireless systems as neither training/reference signal nor cooperation/coordination is required. Extensive simulations show that more than 65 dB of suppression can be achieved for 3 spatially resolvable interference signals yet with random directions.

9. EEG Peak Detection in Cognitive Conflict Processing Using Summit Navigator and Clustering-Based Ranking

Abstract: Correct detection of peaks in electroencephalogram (EEG) signals is of essence due to the significant correlation of those potentials with cognitive performance and disorders. This paper proposes a novel and non-parametric approach to detect prediction error negativity (PEN) in cognitive conflict processing. The PEN candidates are first located from the input signal via an adaptation of a recent effective method for local maxima extraction, processed in a multi-scale manner. The found candidates are then fused and ranked based on their shape and location-based features. False positives caused by candidates' magnitude are eliminated by rotating the sorted candidate list where the one with the second-best ranking score will be identified as PEN. The EEG data collected from a 3D object selection task have been used to verify the efficacy of the proposed approach. Compared with the state-of-the-art peak detection techniques, the proposed method shows an improvement of at least 2.67% in accuracy and 6.27% in sensitivity while requires only about 4 ms to process an epoch. The accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed technique in the detection of PEN in cognitive conflict processing would lead to promising applications in performance improvement of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs).

10. In-Network Caching and Learning Optimization for Federated Learning in Mobile Edge Networks

Abstract: In this paper, we develop a novel privacy-aware framework to address straggling problem in a federated learning (FL)-based mobile edge network through maximizing profit for the mobile service provider (MSP). In particular, unlike the conventional FL process when participating mobile users (MUs) have to train their all data locally, we propose a highly-effective solution that allows MUs to encrypt parts of local data and upload/cache the encrypted data to nearby mobile edge nodes (MENs) and/or a cloud server (CS) to perform additional training processes. In this way, we can not only mitigate the straggling problem caused by limited computing/communications resources at MUs but also enhance the usage efficiency of learning data from all MUs in the FL process. To optimize portions of encrypted data cached and trained at MENs/CS given constraints from MUs and the MSP while considering data privacy and training costs, we first formulate the profit maximization problem for the MSP as an optimal in-network encrypted data caching and learning optimization. We then prove that the objective function is concave, and thus an interior-point method algorithm can be effectively adopted to quickly find the optimal solution. The numerical results demonstrate that our proposed framework can enhance the profit of the MSP up to 5.39 times compared with other FL methods.

11. Balanced Twin Auto-Encoder for IoT Intrusion Detection

Abstract: Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) provide an ef-fective solution for protecting loT systems. However, due to the massive number of loT devices (in billions) and their heterogeneity, IDSs face challenges posed by the complexity of loT data such as correlation-based features, high dimensions, and imbalance. To address these problems, this paper proposes a novel neural network architecture, called Balanced Twin Auto-Encoder (BTAE) which consists of three components, i.e., an encoder, a hermaphrodite, and a decoder. The encoder of BTAE first aims to transfer the input data into the latent space before data samples (pre-images) are translated into this space by different translation vectors. In addition, the data of the skewed labels are also generated in the latent space to address the problem of imbalanced data in which the number of attack samples is often significantly lower than those of the benign samples. Second, the hermaphrodite component serves as a bridge to move the data from the encoder to the decoder. Third, the decoder tries to copy the distribution of the samples in the latent space. BTAE is trained by a supervised learning technique, and its data representation extracted from the decoder can well distinguish the attack from the normal data. The experiments on five loT botnet datasets show that BTAE outperforms three existing groups of methods, e.g., the typical supervised learning, the well-known sampling, and the state-of-the-art representation learning. In addition, the false alarm rate (FAR) of BTAE applied for loT intrusion detection is less than equal to 1.2%.

12. Masked Face Detection with Illumination Awareness

Abstract: Mask mandate has been applied in many countries in the last two years as a simple but effective way to limit the Covid-19 transmission. Besides the guidance from authorities regarding mask use in public, numerous vision-based approaches have been developed to aid with the monitoring of face mask wearing. Despite promising results have been obtained, several challenges in vision-based masked face detection still remain, primarily due to the insufficient of a quality dataset covering adequate variations in lighting conditions, object scales, mask types, or occlusion levels. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of a lightweight masked face detection system under different lighting conditions and the possibility of enhancing its performance with the employment of an image enhancement algorithm and an illumination awareness classifier. A dataset of human subjects with and without face masks in different lighting conditions is first introduced. An illumination awareness classifier is then trained on the collected dataset, the labeling of which is processed automatically based on the difference in detection accuracy when an image enhancement algorithm is taken into account. Experimental results have shown that the combination of the masked face detection system with the illumination awareness and an image enhancement algorithm can boost the system performance to up to 8.6%, 7.4%, and 8.5% in terms of Accuracy, F1-score, and AP-M, respectively.

Abstract: This article studies the strategic interactions between an IoT service provider (IoTSP) which consists of heterogeneous IoT devices and its energy service provider (ESP). To that end, we propose an economic framework using the Stackelberg game to maximize the network throughput and energy efficiency of both the IoTSP and ESP. To obtain the Stackelberg equilibrium (SE), we apply a backward induction technique which first derives a closed-form solution for the ESP (follower). Then, to tackle the non-convex optimization problem for the IoTSP (leader), we leverage the block coordinate descent and convex-concave procedure techniques to design two partitioning schemes (i.e., partial adjustment (PA) and joint adjustment (JA)) to find the optimal energy price and service time that constitute local SEs. Numerical results reveal that by jointly optimizing the energy trading and time allocation for IoT devices, one can achieve significant improvements in terms of the IoTSP's profit compared with those of conventional transmission methods (up to 38.7 folds). Different tradeoffs between the ESP's and IoTSP's profits and complexities of the PA/JA schemes can also be numerically tuned. Simulations also show that the obtained local SEs approach the optimal social welfare when the benefit per transmitted bit exceeds a given threshold.

16. Common Agency-Based Economic Model for Energy Contract in Electric Vehicle Networks

Abstract: The rapid adoption of electric or hybrid vehicles (EVs) has called for wide deployment of charging stations. These stations can be launched/owned by different owners, referred to as charging station providers (CSPs), which make energy contracts with a smart grid provider (SGP). However, there exists a shortage of mutual economic strategy between the SGP and CSPs in an energy request/transfer competition due to the selfish nature among them. In this paper, we propose an economic model leveraging a multi-principal single-agent (referred to as common agency) contract policy, aiming at maximizing the utilities of multiple CSPs while optimizing the utility of the SGP in an EV network. In particular, we first develop the common agency-based contract problem as a non-cooperative energy contract optimization problem, in which each CSP can maximize its utility given the common constraints from the SGP and the contracts of other CSPs. To deal with this problem, we develop an iterative energy contract algorithm to find an equilibrium contract solution where the contracts from the CSPs can produce maximum utilities of the CSPs and satisfy the constraints of the SGP. Through numerical results, we show that our proposed model can improve the social welfare of the EV network up to 54% and the utilities of CSPs up to 60% compared with the baseline method in which each CSP obtains the amount of energy that is proportional to its energy request.

17. Energy Trading and Time Scheduling for Energy-Efficient Heterogeneous Low-Power IoT Networks

Abstract: In this paper, an economic model is proposed to jointly optimize profits for participants in a heterogeneous IoT wireless-powered backscatter communication network. In the network under considerations, a power beacon and IoT devices (with various communication types and energy constraints) are assumed to belong to different service providers, i.e., energy service provider (ESP) and IoT service provider (ISP), respectively. To jointly maximize the utility for both service providers in terms of energy efficiency and network throughput, a Stackelberg game model is proposed to study the strategic interaction between the ISP and ESP. In particular, the ISP first evaluates its benefits from providing IoT services to its customers and then sends its requested price together with the service time to the ESP. Based on the request from the ISP, the ESP offers an optimized transmission power that maximizes its utility while meeting energy demands of the ISP. To study the Stackelberg equilibrium, we first obtain a closed-form solution for the ESP and propose a low-complexity iterative method based on block coordinate descent (BCD) to address the non-convex optimization problem for the ISP. Through simulation results, we show that our approach can significantly improve the profits for both providers compared with those of conventional transmission methods, e.g., bistatic backscatter and harvest-then-transmit communication methods.

Abstract: © 2013 IEEE. Social distancing plays a pivotal role in preventing the spread of viral diseases illnesses such as COVID-19. By minimizing the close physical contact among people, we can reduce the chances of catching the virus and spreading it across the community. This two-part paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey on how emerging technologies, e.g., wireless and networking, artificial intelligence (AI) can enable, encourage, and even enforce social distancing practice. In this Part I, we provide a comprehensive background of social distancing including basic concepts, measurements, models, and propose various practical social distancing scenarios. We then discuss enabling wireless technologies which are especially effect- in social distancing, e.g., symptom prediction, detection and monitoring quarantined people, and contact tracing. The companion paper Part II surveys other emerging and related technologies, such as machine learning, computer vision, thermal, ultrasound, etc., and discusses open issues and challenges (e.g., privacy-preserving, scheduling, and incentive mechanisms) in implementing social distancing in practice.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach to jointly address energy management and network throughput maximization problems for heterogeneous IoT low-power wireless communication networks. In particular, we consider a low-power communication network in which the IoT devices can harvest energy from a dedicated RF energy source to support their transmissions or backscatter the signals of the RF energy source to transmit information to the gateway. Different IoT devices may have dissimilar hardware configurations, and thus they may have various communications types and energy requirements. In addition, the RF energy source may have a limited energy supply source which needs to be minimized. Thus, to maximize the network throughput, we need to jointly optimize energy usage and operation time for the IoT devices under different energy demands and communication constraints. However, this optimization problem is non-convex due to the strong relation between energy supplied by the RF energy source and the IoT communication time, and thus obtaining the optimal solution is intractable. To address this problem, we study the relation between energy supply and communication time, and then transform the non-convex optimization problem to an equivalent convex-optimization problem which can achieve the optimal solution. Through simulation results, we show that our solution can achieve greater network throughputs (up to five times) than those of other conventional methods, e.g., TDMA. In addition, the simulation results also reveal some important information in controlling energy supply and managing low-power IoT devices in heterogeneous wireless communication networks.

The minimum dominating set problem (MDSP) aims to construct the minimum-size subset $$D \subset V$$ of a graph $$G = (V, E)$$ such that every vertex has at least one neighbor in D. The problem is proved to be NP-hard [5]. In a recent industrial application, we encountered a more general variant of MDSP that extends the neighborhood relationship as follows: a vertex is a k-neighbor of another if there exists a linking path through no more than k edges between them. This problem is called the minimum k-dominating set problem (MkDSP) and the dominating set is denoted as $$D:k$$. The MkDSP can be used to model applications in social networks [2] and design of wireless sensor networks [3]. In our case, a telecommunication company uses the problem model to supervise a large social network up to 17 millions nodes via a dominating subset in which k is set to 3.

The classification of brain patterns for each different subject requires an extensively time-consuming learning stage specific to that person, in order to reach satisfactory accuracy performance. The training session could also be infeasible for disabled patients as they may not fully understand the training instructions. In this paper, we propose a unified classification scheme based on ensemble classifier, dynamic stopping, and adaptive learning. We apply this scheme on the P300-based BCI, with the subject-independent manner, where no learning session is required for new experimental users. According to our theoretical analysis and empirical results, the harmonized integration of these three methods can significantly boost up the average accuracy from 75.00% to 91.26%, while at the same time reduce the average spelling time from 12.62 to 6.78 iterations, approximately to two-fold faster. The experiments were conducted on a large public dataset which had been used in other related studies. Direct comparisons between our work with the others' are also reported in details.

22. Feature Engineering and Supervised Learning Classifiers for Respiratory Artefact Removal

Abstract: A critical task in forced oscillation technique (FOT), a promising lung function test, is to remove respiratory artefacts. Manual removal by specialists is widely used but time- consuming and subjective. Most existing automated techniques have involved simple thresholding methods in an unsupervised manner. Breath cycles can be classified by a binary classification model (classes: artefactual and accepted). While attempting to use off-the-shelf sorting algorithms (e.g., one-class support vector machine, knearest neighbours, and adaptive boosting ensemble), we noticed their poor detection performance. This may result from the dependence of samples as found in physiological studies of the lung function that challenges the learning process. Specifically, statistics of breaths that we recorded may change from one to another patient and even within the same recording of a patient. We introduce an additional feature engineering step that is an intermediate module to decorrelate samples, called feature learning (using Wilcoxon signed rank tests). To that end, we collected FOT recordings from various groups of patients (paediatric and adult including healthy and asthmatics). Artefacts in this work were recorded naturally and processed in a complete-breath approach. Performance metrics include evaluations on preservation of "accepted" breaths in the filtered output (including F1- score, throughput, and approval rate). Our experiment found that our feature engineering steps significantly improve the artefact removal performance of all implemented classifiers especially with feature inputs selected by mutual information criterion.

Abstract: We explore the use of cooperative multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communications to prolong the lifetime of a wireless sensor network (WSN). Single-antenna sensor nodes are clustered into virtual antenna arrays that can act as virtualMIMO (VMIMO) nodes.We design a distributed cooperative clustering protocol (CCP), which exploits VMIMO's diversity gain by optimally selecting the cooperating nodes (CNs) within each cluster and balancing their energy consumption. The problem of optimal CN selection at the transmit and receive clusters is formulated as a nonlinear binary program. Aiming at minimizing the imbalance in the residual energy at various nodes, we decompose this problem into two subproblems: finding the optimal number of CNs (ONC) in a cluster and the CN assignment problem. For the ONC problem, we first analyze the energy efficiency of two widely used VMIMO methods: distributed Space Time Block Code (DSTBC) and distributed Vertical-Bell Laboratories-Layered-Space-Time (DVBLAST). Our analysis provides an upper bound on the optimal number of CN nodes, which greatly reduces the computational complexity of the ONC problem. The second subproblem is addressed by assigning CNs based on the residual battery energy. To make CCP scalable to large WSNs, we propose a multihop energy-balanced routing mechanism for clustered WSNs (C-EBR) with a novel cost metric. Finally, we derive sufficient conditions on the intra- and intercluster ranges, under which CCP guarantees connectivity of the intercluster topology. 27. Elevated serum levels of S-100ß protein and neuron-specific enolase are associated with brain injury in patients with severe sepsis and septic shock.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether serum levels of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and S-100beta protein could be used to evaluate cerebral injury and to predict outcome in severe sepsis and severe septic shock. DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: University hospital. PATIENTS AND MEASUREMENTS: In 170 consecutively enrolled patients with severe sepsis and septic shock, serum S-100beta and NSE were measured daily during four consecutive days after intensive care unit admission. Admission Glasgow Coma Scale before sedation and daily Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores were recorded in all patients. Acute encephalopathy was defined as either a state of agitation, confusion, irritability, and convulsions (type A) or characterized by somnolence, stupor, and coma (type B) and persistently observed during 72 hrs after withdrawing sedation. When clinically indicated, contrast computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging were performed to evaluate brain injury. MAIN RESULTS: S-100beta and NSE increased in, respectively, 72 (42%) and 90 (53%) patients. High biomarker levels were associated with the maximum Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores (p = .001), and the highest values were found in patients who died early, within 4 days of inclusion (p = .005). Low consciousness encephalopathy type B was more frequently observed in patients with elevated S-100beta (p = .004). S-100beta levels of >or=4 microg/L were associated with severe brain ischemia or hemorrhage, and values of <2 microg/L were found in patients with diffuse cerebral embolic infarction lesions. High S-100beta levels were associated with higher intensive care unit mortality (p = .04) and represented the strongest independent predictor of intensive care unit survival, whereas NSE and the Glasgow Coma Scale failed to predict fatal outcome. 28. Effects of n-acetylcysteine on microalbuminuria and organ failure in acute severe sepsis.

Abstract: STUDY OBJECTIVE: The level of microalbuminuria is thought to reflect the severity of inflammation-induced systemic vascular permeability and may have prognostic value with regard to organ dysfunction and survival. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been shown to decrease capillary leakage in experimental sepsis. The present study investigated the effect of early treatment with NAC on microalbuminuria and organ dysfunction in severe clinical sepsis. DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study. SETTING: A 24-bed multidisciplinary ICU in a university teaching hospital. PATIENTS: Thirty-five patients included within 4 h of fulfilling consensus criteria of severe sepsis. INTERVENTIONS: Patients were randomly assigned to receive either NAC (continuous infusion starting with 50 mg/kg/4 h followed by 100 mg/kg/24 h for 44 h; n = 18) or placebo (n = 17) in addition to standard therapy. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Urine samples for measurement of microalbuminuria/creatinine ratio (MACR) were collected on inclusion and after 4 h, 24 h, and 48 h. Severity of illness and degree of organ failure were determined by using, respectively, the APACHE (acute physiology and chronic health evaluation) II score and the sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score. The MACR did not differ over time between the placebo- and the NAC-treated groups. SOFA scores were comparable between both treatment groups at baseline (6.2 +/- 3.9 vs 6.5 +/- 2.7, NAC vs placebo; p = 0.6) and increased during treatment in the NAC-treated patients but not in the placebo group (7.9 +/- 3.7 vs 5.9 +/- 2.5, p = 0.09 and 7.7 +/- 3.8 vs 5.1 +/- 2.1, p < 0.05; NAC vs placebo, respectively, at 24 h and at 48 h). The cardiovascular SOFA score progressively increased during NAC treatment, reaching higher values as compared to time-matched scores in the placebo group. CONCLUSIONS: Early NAC administration does not influence the course of MACR in severe clinical sepsis, suggesting that NAC might not attenuate endothelial damage in this condition. 29. Structural allograft versus Polyetheretherketone cage in Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: A Meta-analysis.

Abstract: Background: Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cages and structural allografts (SAs) are commonly used in Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF), yet their postoperative results remain uncertain. This meta-analysis was conducted to determine whether there were any differences in outcomes between patients who received these two grafts in ACDF., Methods: We comprehensively searched electronic databases up to August 2023. Observational studies or randomized controlled trials reported postoperative outcomes, including fusion, subsidence, reoperation rates, and patient-reported outcomes through the Neck Disability Index (NDI), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for neck and arm pain, and the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA)/modified JOA score following primary ACDF using SA or PEEK cage. The results are presented in odds ratios (ORs) or mean differences with corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs)., Results: Eleven studies were included, with 1213 patients (788 receiving SAs and 425 receiving PEEK cages). Patients having SA had significantly higher fusion (OR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.27-2.67, p = 0.001) and lower subsidence (OR: 0.50, 95%CI: 0.30-0.86, p = 0.01) rates when compared with the PEEK cage. There was no difference in revision rate between SA or PEEK cage (p = 0.88). Two grafts demonstrated similar clinical improvements in NDI (p = 0.31), VAS for the neck (p = 0.77) and arm pain (p = 0.22), and JOA/mJOA score (p = 0.99)., Conclusion: SA demonstrates better fusion and lower subsidence rates than the PEEK cage in ACDF. 30. Evaluation of the gastric conduit perfusion using indocyanine green in thoracoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer.

Abstract: Objective: Indocyanine green has been used in the assessment of the gastric conduit perfusion in thoracoscopic esophagectomy to prevent malperfusion-associated anastomotic leak. This study aims to evaluate the initial results of investigating the gastric conduit perfusion with indocyanine green in the surgical treatment of esophageal cancer., Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out on 54 esophageal cancer patients undergoing thoracoscopic esophagectomy and gastric conduit reconstruction. The blood flow in the gastric conduit was observed using an infrared camera and indocyanine green after completion of the conduit and after tunneling the conduit through the mediastinum to the neck., Results: The gastric conduit width and length were 5.2 ± 0.3 cm, and 31.5 ± 1.6 cm, respectively. The length of the gastric conduit from the junction between the right and left gastroepiploic to the point where the distal end of the gastric conduit still has a vascular pulse was 11.9 ± 4.3 cm. Seventeen patients (31.5%) had poor blood supply at the distal end of the gastric conduit, with indocyanine green appearance time ⩾ 60 s, in whom anastomotic leaks occurred in five patients (9.3%). The lack of connection between the right and left gastroepiploic vessels was associated with poor blood supply of the distal gastric conduit ( p = 0.04). Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed association between the time of indocyanine green appearance at the distal gastric conduit and the risk of anastomotic leak (OR = 1.99, 95% CI = 1.10-3.60, p = 0.02)., Conclusion: Investigation of gastric conduit perfusion using indocyanine green in gastric conduit reconstruction detected 31.5% of patients with poor blood supply at the distal end of the conduit, in whom 9.3% had anastomotic leak. Abstract: Antibiotic tolerance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis reduces bacterial killing, worsens treatment outcomes, and contributes to resistance. We studied rifampicin tolerance in isolates with or without isoniazid resistance (IR). Using a minimum duration of killing assay, we measured rifampicin survival in isoniazid-susceptible (IS, n=119) and resistant (IR, n=84) isolates, correlating tolerance with bacterial growth, rifampicin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs), and isoniazid-resistant mutations. Longitudinal IR isolates were analyzed for changes in rifampicin tolerance and genetic variant emergence. The median time for rifampicin to reduce the bacterial population by 90% (MDK90) increased from 1.23 days (IS) and 1.31 days (IR) to 2.55 days (IS) and 1.98 days (IR) over 15-60 days of incubation, indicating fast and slow-growing tolerant sub-populations. A 6 log10-fold survival fraction classified tolerance as low, medium, or high, showing that IR is linked to increased tolerance and faster growth (OR = 2.68 for low vs. medium, OR = 4.42 for low vs. high, p-trend = 0.0003). High tolerance in IR isolates was associated with rifampicin treatment in patients and genetic microvariants. Abstract: MoSSe is a semiconducting material with a layered structure similar to MoS 2 and MoSe 2 , which shows potential applications in optoelectronics, solar cells, sensing, and catalysis. Synthesis of this material with a controllable structure and chemical composition represents a great challenge. Herein, we report a new method for the synthesis of MoSSe by employing an [Et 4 N] 2 [Mo 3 S 4 Se 3 Br 6 ] complex as the sole precursor. Thermal annealing of this complex under an Ar atmosphere at moderate temperatures ranging from 350 °C to 650 °C resulted in the formation of pure MoSSe. The morphology and structure of MoSSe were characterized using SEM, HRTEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). The effects of annealing temperature on the structure of MoSSe were also examined.

33. Feeding cessation and antibiotics improve clinical symptoms and alleviate gut and systemic inflammation in preterm pigs sensitive to necrotizing enterocolitis.

Abstract: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a microbiota- and feeding-related gut inflammatory disease in preterm infants. The standard of care (SOC) treatment for suspected NEC is antibiotic treatment and reduced enteral feeding, but how SOC treatment mitigates NEC remains unclear. We explored whether SOC treatment alone or combined with an anti-inflammatory protein (inter-alpha inhibitor protein, IAIP) supplementation improves outcomes in a preterm piglet model of formula-induced NEC. Seventy-one cesarean-delivered preterm piglets were initially fed formula, developing NEC symptoms by day 3, and then randomized into CON (continued feeding) or SOC groups (feeding cessation and antibiotics), each with or without human IAIP (2×2 factorial design). By day 5, IAIP treatment did not significantly influence outcomes, whereas SOC treatment effectively reduced NEC lesions, diarrhea, and bloody stools. Notably, SOC treatment improved gut morphology and function, dampened gut inflammatory responses, altered the colonic microbiota composition, and modulated systemic immune responses. Plasma proteomic analysis revealed the effects of SOC treatment on organ development and systemic inflammatory responses. Collectively, these findings suggest that SOC treatment significantly prevents NEC progression in preterm piglets via effects on gut structure, function, and microbiota, as well as systemic immune and inflammatory responses. Advanced wound dressings are critical need to enhance their hemostatic capabilities, antimicrobial properties, and ability to support angiogenesis and sustained moisture for optimal healing. This study introduces a flexible hemostatic dressing designed for open wounds, integrating chitosan (CS) for hemostasis and biocompatibility, silk fibroin (SF) for mechanical strength, and montmorillonite (MMT) for enhanced drug transport. The CSSF@MMT dressings showed promising mechanical strength and swift hemostasis. The CIP-loaded CSSF@MMT demonstrated sustained release for up to one week, exhibiting antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. In vitro cell migration assay demonstrated that erythropoietin-loaded CSSF@MMT dressings promoted the proliferation and migration of endothelial cells. Similarly, the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane study indicated the same dressings exhibited a significant increase in vascular regeneration. This research suggests that the CSSF@MMT sponge dressing, incorporated with CIP and erythropoietin, holds promise in effectively halting bleeding, creating a protective environment, diminishing inflammation, and fostering wound tissue regeneration. Abstract: Arginine (ARG)/Citrulline (CIT) deficiency is associated with increased sepsis severity after infection. Supplementation of CIT to susceptible patients with ARG/CIT deficiency such as preterm newborns with suspected infection might prevent sepsis, via maintaining immune and vascular function. Caesarean-delivered, parenterally nourished preterm pigs were treated with CIT (1g/kg bodyweight) via oral or continuous intravenous supplementation, then inoculated with live Staphylococcus epidermidis and clinically monitored for 14 h. Blood, liver, and spleen samples were collected for analysis. In vitro cord blood stimulation was performed to explore how CIT and ARG affect premature blood cell responses. After infection, oral CIT supplementation led to higher mortality, increased blood bacterial load, and systemic and hepatic inflammation. Intravenous CIT administration showed increased inflammation and bacterial burdens without significantly affecting mortality. Liver transcriptomics and data from in vitro blood stimulation indicated that CIT induces systemic immunosuppression in preterm newborns, which may impair resistance response to bacteria at the early stage of infection, subsequently causing later uncontrollable inflammation and tissue damage. 36. Regulation of host metabolism and defense strategies to survive neonatal infection.

Abstract: Two distinct defense strategies, disease resistance (DR) and disease tolerance (DT), enable a host to survive infectious diseases. Newborns, constrained by limited energy reserves, predominantly rely on DT to cope with infection. However, this approach may fail when pathogen levels surpass a critical threshold, prompting a shift to DR that can lead to dysregulated immune responses and sepsis. The mechanisms governing the interplay between DR and DT in newborns remain poorly understood. Here, we compare metabolic traits and defense strategies between survivors and non-survivors in Staphylococcus epidermidis (S. epidermidis)-infected preterm piglets, mimicking infection in preterm infants. Compared to non-survivors, survivors displayed elevated DR during the initial phase of infection, followed by stronger DT in later stages. In contrast, non-survivors showed clear signs of respiratory and metabolic acidosis and hyperglycemia, together with exaggerated inflammation and organ dysfunctions. Hepatic transcriptomics revealed a strong association between the DT phenotype and heightened oxidative phosphorylation in survivors, coupled with suppressed glycolysis and immune signaling. Plasma metabolomics confirmed the findings of metabolic regulations associated with DT phenotype in survivors. Our study suggests a significant association between the initial DR and subsequent DT, which collectively contributes to improved infection survival. 37. A Broadband MS-Based Circularly Polarized Antenna Array Using Sequential-Phase Feeding Network.

Abstract: This paper introduces the design of a circularly polarized metasurface-based antenna array for C-band satellite applications that owns broadband operation and high gain characteristics. The single radiating element comprises a Y-shape patch and an above-placed 2 × 2 unit-cell metasurface. Further improvement in operating bandwidth and broadside gain is achieved by arranging four single elements in a 2 × 2 configuration and a sequential-phase feed network. A prototype has been fabricated and measured to validate the feasibility of the proposed antenna array. The measured operating bandwidth is 20% (4.50-5.50 GHz), which is an overlap between a -10 dB impedance bandwidth of 29.8% (4.50-5.99 GHz) and a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 20% (4.50-5.50 GHz). Across this operating band, the peak broadside gain is 10.5 dBi. Compared with the recently published studies, the proposed array is a prominent design for producing a wide operating bandwidth and relatively high gains while maintaining the overall compact dimensions.

38. Peptide-enabled ribonucleoprotein delivery for CRISPR engineering (PERC) in primary human immune cells and hematopoietic stem cells.

Abstract: Peptide-enabled ribonucleoprotein delivery for CRISPR engineering (PERC) is a new approach for ex vivo genome editing of primary human cells. PERC uses a single amphiphilic peptide reagent to mediate intracellular delivery of the same pre-formed CRISPR ribonucleoprotein enzymes that are broadly used in research and therapeutics, resulting in high-efficiency editing of stimulated immune cells and cultured hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs). PERC facilitates nuclease-mediated gene knockout, precise transgene knock-in, and base editing. PERC involves mixing the CRISPR ribonucleoprotein enzyme with peptide and then incubating the formulation with cultured cells. For efficient transgene knock-in, adeno-associated virus (AAV) bearing homology-directed repair template DNA may be included. In contrast to electroporation, PERC is appealing as it requires no dedicated hardware and has less impact on cell phenotype and viability. Due to the gentle nature of PERC, delivery can be performed multiple times without substantial impact to cell health or phenotype. Here we report methods for improved PERC-mediated editing of T cells as well as novel methods for PERC-mediated editing of HSPCs, including knockout and precise knock-in. Editing efficiencies can surpass 90% using either Cas9 or Cas12a in primary T cells or HSPCs. Because PERC calls for only three readily available reagents - protein, RNA, and peptide - and does not require dedicated hardware for any step, PERC demands no special expertise and is exceptionally straightforward to adopt. The inherent compatibility of PERC with established cell engineering pipelines makes this approach appealing for rapid deployment in research and clinical settings.

39. Unified and Versatile Multiplex Platform for Expedited Method Development and Comprehensive Characterization of Therapeutic Peptides.

Abstract: Agile analytical approaches are needed for fast and comprehensive characterization of peptide drug candidates. In this study, a unified and versatile multiplex platform was developed to expedite method development and enable the routine determination of multiple quality attributes simultaneously. The platform integrates the automation of size exclusion chromatography (SEC), reversed phase liquid chromatography coupled to reversed phase liquid chromatography (RPLC-RPLC), and hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography hyphenated to charged aerosol detection (HILIC-CAD). Various therapeutic peptide constructs, including macrocyclic peptides and disulfide constrained peptides, across different lots were studied. The effect of the mobile phase acetonitrile content on the impurity profiles was systematically studied using two SEC columns. A prototype MaxPeak Premier SEC 125 Å column packed with BEH PEO particles achieved the separation of impurities (>2.0% area), whereas no impurities could be observed with an ACQUITY UPLC Protein BEH SEC 125 Å column packed with BEH diol particles. Comprehensive impurity profiling and expedited method development was performed utilizing RPLC-RPLC. Each peptide was analyzed by a combination of 12 conditions in the second dimension, using four columns with octadecyl, phenyl-hexyl, and cyano bonded phases, and three mobile phases with various solvents, modifiers, and pH compositions. Additionally, a HILIC-CAD method was developed for the quantification of TFA, commonly present in peptide products.

Abstract: Plasmid DNA (pDNA) is an essential tool in genetic engineering that has gained prevalence in cell and gene therapies. Plasmids exist as supercoiled (SC), open circular (OC), and linear forms. Plasmid multimerization can also occur during the manufacturing process. Even though the SC forms are thought to provide optimal knock-in (KI) efficiency, there is no strong consensus on the effect of the topological forms and multimers on the functional activity. In addition, the results obtained for conventional pDNAs (>5 kbp) do not necessarily translate to smaller pDNAs (∼3 kbp). In this study, a workflow was developed for the analytical and functional characterization of pDNA topological forms and multimers. An anion exchange chromatography (AEC) method was first developed to quantify the topological forms and multimers. Four AEC columns were initially compared, one of which was found to provide superior chromatographic performance. The effect of mobile phase pH, various salts, column temperature, and acetonitrile content on the separation performance was systematically studied. The method performance, including precision and accuracy, was evaluated. The final AEC method was compared to capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) by analyzing several pDNA sequences and lots. A forced degradation study revealed unexpectedly high degradation of the SC forms. Finally, the KI efficiency was compared for the SC and OC forms, and the multimers.

42. Rescue extracranial vertebral stenting in tandem occlusions: A preliminary Vietnamese study.

Abstract: Background and Purpose: The acute vertebrobasilar occlusion associated with the poor prognosis, particularly tandem occlusion. However, few data on the efficacy of the endovascular therapy was indicated in this occlusion. We investigated whether the additional rescue extracranial vertebral stenting improved clinical outcome by modified Rankin scale (mRS) score within 3 months after the procedure., Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of patients with acute posterior tandem occlusion who were treated with rescue extracranial vertebral stenting between December 2020 and January 2024 at our hospital. Clinical, neuroimaging, procedural, and complication data were collected. Primary outcomes included the rate of good outcomes (mRS ≤ 2) at 3-month follow-up., Results: Nine patients who underwent rescue extracranial vertebral stenting in posterior circulation tandem occlusions were enrolled in the study. All patients were achieved the successful recanalization (mTICI ≥ 2b). Of Dotter technique in the "distal-to-proximal" approach, Diagnostic-Dotter made up 66.7%. 43. Assessment of microplastics pollution level on clam farming and bathing beaches: a case study of Thanh Phu in Ben Tre, Vietnam.

Abstract: This study focused on the investigation microplastics (MPs) with a size of ≤1.0 mm in sand samples from Thanh Phu beach, Ben Tre, Vietnam. MPs in sand from the clam beach (from 39.67 ± 6.67 to 92.00 ± 12.93 items kg-1 dried sand) were higher than those from the bathing beach (from 21.33 ± 8.76 to 51.67 ± 16.11 items kg-1 dried sand), indicating a direct contribution of MPs from coastal aquaculture. For the clam beach, MPs in surface samples (0-4 cm) were lower than in deep samples (4-6 cm). In contrast, MPs in surface samples (0-2 cm) from the bathing beach were higher than deep samples (2-5 cm). A combination of microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy methods confirmed that 62.5% of the representative MPs samples or 18.9% of the suspected MPs samples were plastics. Low-density polyethylene, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate were the largest in abundance. Further studies are needed to assess the environmental risk of MPs accumulation.

44. A compact co-aperture dual-sense circularly polarized antenna for simultaneous transmit and receive systems.

Abstract: This paper proposes a compact design of dual-sense circularly polarized (CP) antenna for simultaneous transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) communication systems. The primary radiating aperture of the proposed antenna is a 2 × 2 unit-cell metasurface (MS). The MS is excited by the asymmetric patch in the center, which acts as the CP source of the whole antenna structure. By properly tuning the feeding positions, dual-sense CP with high isolation can be achieved. For verification, an antenna prototype with compact dimensions of 0.36λ × 0.36λ × 0.02λ (λ is the free-space wavelength at the center operating frequency) is fabricated and measured. The measured operating bandwidth is 1.6% (2.45-2.49 GHz), in which the reflection and transmission coefficients are less than-10 dB and the axial ratio is lower than 3 dB. Abstract: Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection diagnosis remains a challenge due to its overlapping clinical symptoms with tuberculosis (TB), leading to inappropriate treatment. Herein, we employed noninvasive metabolic phenotyping coupled with comprehensive statistical modeling to discover potential biomarkers for the differential diagnosis of NTM infection versus TB. Urine samples from 19 NTM and 35 TB patients were collected, and untargeted metabolomics was performed using rapid liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The urine metabolome was analyzed using a combination of univariate and multivariate statistical approaches, incorporating machine learning. Univariate analysis revealed significant alterations in amino acids, especially tryptophan metabolism, in NTM infection compared to TB. Specifically, NTM infection was associated with upregulated levels of methionine but downregulated levels of glutarate, valine, 3-hydroxyanthranilate, and tryptophan. Five machine learning models were used to classify NTM and TB. Notably, the random forest model demonstrated excellent performance [area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve greater than 0.8] in distinguishing NTM from TB. Six potential biomarkers for NTM infection diagnosis, including methionine, valine, glutarate, 3-hydroxyanthranilate, corticosterone, and indole-3-carboxyaldehyde, were revealed from univariate ROC analysis and machine learning models. We describe a 53-year-old woman with a hematuria who underwent transurethral resection of bladder lesions caused by metastatic melanoma for eight years ago after receiving her initial diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma., Clinical Discussion: We also review the medical literature to determine the prognosis of bladder metastatic melanoma. 47. Optimization of leucomalachite green degradation through electron beam and persulfate oxidation using box-behnken design and life cycle assessment.

Abstract: This study explored the treatment of Leucomalachite Green (LMG) solutions using an electron beam and sodium persulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 8 ), employing Box-Behnken design (BBD) to optimize operational variables such as absorbed dose, initial pH and Na 2 S 2 O 8 concentration. The findings highlighted an optimal absorbed dose of 4.5 kGy, a Na 2 S 2 O 8 concentration of 1.0 mM, and an initial pH of 6, leading to a remarkable 97.77% removal of LMG. The adjusted R 2 for the model indicated a close match of 1.4% between predicted and actual outcomes under these optimized conditions, affirming the quadratic model's suitability for predicting the LMG removal process using combined EB and Na 2 S 2 O 8 . To assess the environmental impact of the LMG treatment, the study applied SimaPro 9.4 with the TRACI tool, examining ten distinct environmental impact categories. The results unveiled that deionized water and Na 2 S 2 O 8 exhibited a notable impact on global warming (GW) and ecotoxicity (ET) in controlled laboratory settings. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of four scenarios shed light on the environmental implications of different energy sources. Notably, electricity generated from waste incineration demonstrated a substantial influence on all environmental indicators. In contrast, natural gas emerged as the cleanest source for electricity generation, offering a promising avenue for reducing environmental impacts. 48. NKp30 and NKG2D contribute to natural killer recognition of HIV-infected cells.

Abstract: Natural killer (NK) cells respond rapidly in early HIV-1 infection. HIV-1 prevention and control strategies harnessing NK cells could be enabled by mechanistic understanding of how NK cells recognize HIV-infected T cells. Here, we profiled the phenotype of human primary NK cells responsive to autologous HIV-1-infected CD4 + T cells in vitro. We characterized the patterns of NK cell ligand expression on CD4 + T cells at baseline and after infection with a panel of transmitted/founder HIV-1 strains to identify key receptor-ligand pairings. CRISPR editing of CD4 + T cells to knockout the NKp30 ligand B7-H6, or the NKG2D ligands MICB or ULBP2 reduced NK cell responses to HIV-infected cells in some donors. In contrast, overexpression of NKp30 or NKG2D in NK cells enhanced their targeting of HIV-infected cells. Collectively, we identified receptor-ligand pairs including NKp30:B7-H6 and NKG2D:MICB/ULBP2 that contribute to NK cell recognition of HIV-infected cells.

49. Development of UPLC-MS/MS method for the simultaneous quantification of valproic acid and phenytoin in human plasma and application to study pharmacokinetic interaction in epilepsy patients.

Abstract: Valproic acid and phenytoin are two prevalent antiepileptic medications known for their narrow indices and propensity for cardiovascular and respiratory system toxicity. Therefore, therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of valproic acid (VAL) and phenytoin (PHE) concentrations in patient plasma is extremely beneficial for improving clinical choices, avoiding adverse reactions, and optimizing treatment for individual patients. In this study, a rapid and sensitive ultra-performance liquid chromatographic tandem mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS/MS) method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantitative determination of valproic acid (VAL) and phenytoin (PHE) in human plasma. Negative electron spray ionization (ESI-) mode with selective ion recording (SIR) was employed to determine the transitions of m / z 142.98 and m / z 250.93 for VAL and PHE, respectively. The internal standard (IS) betamethasone (BETA) was ionized using positive electron spray ionization (ESI+) and detected by multi-reaction monitoring (MRM) mode to obtain precursor ions and specific fragment ions for quantification, and the MRM transition was chosen to be m / z 393.17 → 355.16. The separation was performed using a Phenomenex Synergi Hydro-RP (4 μm, 250 × 4.6 mm, I.D.) with an isocratic mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile - water (75:25, v/v) at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min. The column temperature was maintained at 25 °C. The lower limit of quantification of VAL and PHE was 3.6 μg/mL and 0.72 μg/mL, respectively, which resulted in a recovery of more than 85 % for most analytes. According to US-FDA bioanalytical technique validation, the specificity, intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy, matrix effect, carryover, dilution, and stability of all analytes were within acceptable ranges. 50. Metasurface-based dual-sense circularly polarized antenna for MIMO/full-duplex applications.

Abstract: This paper introduces a two-element antenna array with dual-sense circular polarization, wideband operation, and high isolation characteristics. The antenna consists of two conventional truncated corner patches and an extra layer of metasurface (MS) located above the radiating patches. The overall dimensions of the proposed antenna are 0.92 λ0 × 0.73 λ0 × 0.05 λ0 and the element spacings are 0.02 λ0 and 0.39 λ0 with respect to edge-to-edge and center-to-center spacings. For validation, measurements on a fabricated antenna prototype are carried out. The measured data demonstrate that the presented MS-based antenna has a wide operating bandwidth of 14.5% with high isolation of better than 26 dB.
