In this study, the authors sought to understand the influence of the Olympic Games on a host community’s globalization and development using world-systems theory and theories of globalization (i.e., glocalization and grobalization). The host community for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics (Daegwallyeong-myeon in South Korea) was the focus of this investigation. Using a global ethnographic approach, the authors collected diverse data through interviews, observations, archival and media documents, and field notes. Findings identified five key themes: (a) perception of underdevelopment, (b) the Organizing Committee’s institutional management of the global standard, (c) the Organizing Committee’s role as a negotiator between the global standard and the locality, (d) resident perspectives on global standards and regulations, and (e) aspirations to globalize Daegwallyeong-myeon. Through this study, the authors advance the use of world-systems theory and expand the concept of grobalization in the context of sport megaevent management by discussing global–local configurations and local agents’ desires to transform the community through Olympic-driven development and globalization.

Viridans group streptococci are a serious health concern because most of these bacteria cause life-threatening infections, especially in immunocompromised and hospitalized individuals. We focused on two alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus strains (I-G2 and I-P16) newly isolated from an ileostomy effluent of a colorectal cancer patient. We examined their pathogenic potential by investigating their prevalence in human and assessing their pathogenicity in a mouse model. We also predicted their virulence factors and pathogenic features by using comparative genomic analysis and in vitro tests. Using polyphasic and systematic approaches, we identified the isolates as belonging to a novel Streptococcus species and designated it as Streptococcus ilei. Metagenomic survey based on taxonomic assignment of datasets from the Human Microbiome Project revealed that S. ilei is present in most human population and at various body sites but is especially abundant in the oral cavity. Intraperitoneal injection of S. ilei was lethal to otherwise healthy C57BL/6J mice. Pathogenomics and in vitro assays revealed that S. ilei possesses a unique set of virulence factors. In agreement with the in vivo and in vitro data, which indicated that S. ilei strain I-G2 is more pathogenic than strain I-P16, only the former displayed the streptococcal group A antigen. We here newly identified S. ilei sp. nov., and described its prevalence in human, virulence factors, and pathogenicity. This will help to prevent S. ilei strain misidentification in the future, and improve the understanding and management of streptococcal infections.

This cultural-interpretive essay offers critical commentary on Koreanness, racial ideology, hegemonic racial power, and racialized cultural taste with the aim of interpreting the sport–music nexus by examining a case of the interface between music and sport: The authors focus on the case of the Olympic ice dance that the South Korean team performed for the Korean traditional folk song Arirang at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games. The authors argue that music and sport can be understood as a semiological system that shapes non-Whites’ ideological belief system. In addition, this essay engages with a discussion of cultural classification that often racializes skaters of color as the aforementioned are informed by Orientalism.

Calf diarrhea is associated with enteric infections, and also provokes the overuse of antibiotics. Therefore, proper treatment of diarrhea represents a therapeutic challenge in livestock production and public health concerns. Here, we describe the ability of a fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT), to ameliorate diarrhea and restore gut microbial composition in 57 growing calves. We conduct multi-omics analysis of 450 longitudinally collected fecal samples and find that FMT-induced alterations in the gut microbiota (an increase in the family Porphyromonadaceae) and metabolomic profile (a reduction in fecal amino acid concentration) strongly correlate with the remission of diarrhea. During the continuous follow-up study over 24 months, we find that FMT improves the growth performance of the cattle. This first FMT trial in ruminants suggest that FMT is capable of ameliorating diarrhea in pre-weaning calves with alterations in their gut microbiota, and that FMT may have a potential role in the improvement of growth performance., Here, the authors report the results of a longitudinal multi-omics trial of the use of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) to ameliorate diarrhea and restore gut microbial composition in 57 growing calves, and find that oral FMT induces alterations in the gut microbiota correlate with the remission of diarrhea and improves the growth performance of the cattle.

Recent studies on developing three-dimensional (3D) brain organoids from stem cells have allowed the generation of in vitro models of neural disease and have enabled the screening of drugs because these organoids mimic the complexity of neural tissue. Niemann-Pick disease, type C (NPC) is a neurodegenerative lysosomal storage disorder caused by mutations in the NPC1 or NPC2. The pathological features underlying NPC are characterized by the abnormal accumulation of cholesterol in acidic compartments, including late endosomes and lysosomes. Due to the inaccessibility of brain tissues from human NPC patients, we developed NPC brain organoids with induced neural stem cells from NPC patient-derived fibroblasts. NPC organoids exhibit significantly reduced size and proliferative ability, which are accompanied by accumulation of cholesterol, impairment in neuronal differentiation, and autophagic flux and dysfunction of lysosomes; therefore, NPC organoids can recapitulate the main phenotypes of NPC patients. Furthermore, these pathological phenotypes observed in NPC organoids were reversed by treatment with valproic acid and HPBCD, which are known to be an effective treatment for several neurodegenerative diseases. Our data present patient-specific phenotypes in 3D organoid-based models of NPC and highlight the application of this model to drug screening in vitro.

Background Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne infectious disease caused by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. To date, there have been no reported cases of A. phagocytophilum infection found in both the biting tick and the patient following a tick bite. Case presentation An 81-year-old woman presented with fever following a tick bite, with the tick still intact on her body. The patient was diagnosed with HGA. The tick was identified as Ixodes nipponensis by morphological and molecular biological detection methods targeting the 16S rRNA gene. The patient’s blood was cultured after inoculation into the human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60. A. phagocytophilum growth was confirmed via culture and isolation. A. phagocytophilum was identified in both the tick and the patient’s blood by Anaplasma-specific groEL- and ankA-based nested polymerase chain reaction followed by sequencing. Moreover, a four-fold elevation in antibodies was observed in the patient’s blood. Conclusion We report a case of a patient diagnosed with HGA following admission for fever due to a tick bite. A. phagocytophilum was identified in both the tick and the patient, and A. phagocytophilum was successfully cultured. The present study suggests the need to investigate the possible incrimination of I. nipponensis as a vector for HGA in Korea.

A Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, yellow-pigmented, non-motile, non-flagellated, facultative anaerobic and rod-shaped bacterial strain, designated BI34T, was isolated from the gut of the larva of Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis. Strain BI34T grew at 15–40 °C (optimum, 37 °C), at pH 6.5–9.0 (optimum, pH 7.5) and in the presence of 0–7 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 2 %). Based on the results of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain BI34T belonged to the phylum Actinobacteria and was closely related to Cellulosimicrobium funkei NBRC 104118T (99.3 %), Cellulosimicrobium cellulans NBRC 15516T (99.1 %), Cellulosimicrobium composti BIT-GX5T (99.0 %), Cellulosimicrobium fucosivorans SE3T (99.0 %), Cellulosimicrobium marinum NBRC 110994T (98.4 %) and Cellulosimicrobium terreum DS-61T (97.0 %). The genome to genome relatedness of the average nucleotide identity (ANI) and the digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) values calculated by the Genome-to-Genome Distance Calculator between strain BI34T and its related species mentioned above were lower than the threshold of 95 and 70 % for speciation, respectively. The predominant menaquinone of strain BI34T contained MK-9(H4), and the major fatty acids were anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Strain BI34T had diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as major polar lipids. The whole-cell sugars were galactose, glucose and ribose, and the cell-wall peptidoglycan contained lysine, alanine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid. The DNA G+C content of strain BI34T was 73.8 mol%. The difference in physiological and biochemical characteristics and the below-threshold values of genome-to-genome relatedness indicate that strain BI34T represents a novel species in the genus Cellulosimicrobium , for which the name Cellulosimicrobium protaetiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BI34T (=KCTC 49302T=NBRC 114073T).

A novel Gram-stain-positive, non-motile, non-spore-forming, coccobacillus-shaped, strictly aerobic bacterium, designated strain H23T48T, was isolated from the faecal sample of an oriental stork collected from the Seoul Grand Park Zoo in Seoul, Republic of Korea. Optimal growth of strain H23T48Twas observed at 30–37 °C, pH 8 and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. 16S rRNA gene sequence-based phylogenetic analysis revealed that strain H23T48Twas closely related to the genusFlaviflexus, with 97.0 and 96.7 % sequence similarities toFlaviflexus salsibiostraticolaEBR4-1-2TandFlaviflexus huanghaiensisH5T, respectively. Strain H23T48Tpossessed MK-9(H4) as the major menaquinone and C16 : 0(42.4 %), C18 : 1 ω9c(31.3 %) and C14 : 0(17.7 %) as the major cellular fatty acids. The polar lipids included phosphatidylglycerol, two unidentified lipids, six unidentified phospholipids and two unidentified glycophospholipids. The amino acid composition of the cell-wall peptidoglycan wasl-alanine,l-lysine,d-glutamic acid,l-aspartic acid and glycine. The genomic G+C content of strain H23T48Tis 59.5 mol% and the average nucleotide identity value between H23T48TandF. salsibiostraticolaKCT C33148T(=EBR4-1-2T) is 75.5 %. Based on the obtained data, strain H23T48Trepresents a novel species of the genusFlaviflexus, for which the nameFlaviflexus ciconiaesp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H23T48T(=KCTC 49253T=JCM 33282T).

This study examines media discourses of the naturalized athletes of the South Korean men’s national ice hockey team. Building on the conceptual frameworks of imagined community, ethnic nationalism, and previous studies on athlete migration and naturalization, we further an understanding of the process of deconstruction and reconstruction of South Korean ethnic and national identity. We use Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis to explore how South Korean media legitimized the naturalization of foreign athletes without Korean ancestry and suggest three themes found from the discourses. First, the discourses highlighted the significance of the South Korean team’s Olympic success, which provided a legitimate reason for the recruitment of foreign athletes. Second, the naturalized athletes were described as “saviors” who possessed superior careers, physicality, and playing skills. Lastly, the media complimented the naturalized athletes’ acculturation to Korean culture by emphasizing their commitment to the nation. We argue that by forming and distributing discourses that favored the naturalization of athletes, Koreans have expanded the boundary of Koreanness. We discuss, then, the expansion of Koreanness in relation to the notion of flexible citizenship in the era of neoliberal globalization.

A novel, Gram-stain-positive, non-spore-forming, facultatively anaerobic bacterium, designated strain H21T32T, was isolated from the faeces of an Oriental stork, Ciconia boyciana. Cells formed cocci grouped in pairs, tetrads or conglomerates, and colonies on solid medium were pale yellow. Strain H21T32T belonged to the genus Jeotgalibaca , family Carnobacteriaceae , order Lactobacillales and class Bacilli . The 16S rRNA gene sequences of the strain showed 97.06–97.34, 96.17–96.31 and 95.93–96.07 % similarity to the type strains of Jeotgalibaca arthritidis , J. porci and J. dankookensis , respectively. The strain grew at 10–37 °C (optimum temperature: 30 °C), with 0–7 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum salinity: 0.5 %) and at pH 7–9 (optimum pH: 8). The main cellular fatty acids were C16 : 1 ω9c, C18 : 1 ω9c and C16 : 0. The major polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol. Respiratory quinones were not detected. Sugar components of the peptidoglycan were rhamnose, ribose and glucose. Amino acid components of the cell wall were l-alanine, d-glucose, l-lysine, glycine and aspartic acid. The DNA G+C content of the strain was 37.1 mol%. Average nucleotide identity between strain H21T32T and J. arthritidis CECT 9157T was 77.02 %, confirming that strain H21T32T represents a novel species of the genus Jeotgalibaca , for which the name Jeotgalibaca ciconiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H21T32T (=KCTC 33991T=JCM 33222T).

A novel Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, rod-shaped, reddish-orange-coloured, gliding bacterial strain, designated L12M1T, was isolated from the gut of the Korean scallop, Patinopecten yessoensis. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that strain L12M1T formed a monophyletic clade with the strains in the genus Flammeovirga and showed highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Flammeovirga kamogawensis YS10T (98.66 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain L12M1T were iso-C15 : 0 and C20 : 4ω6,9,12,15c. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was MK-7. The major polyamines were spermidine, cadaverine and the minor polyamine was putrescine. The DNA G+C content was 32.1 mol%. The phylogenetic, phenotypic, biochemical, chemotaxonomic and genotypic results indicated that strain L12M1T represents a novel species of the genus Flammeovirga , for which the name Flammeovirga pectinis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is L12M1T (=KCTC 62750T=JCM 33169T).

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that is characterized by loss of motor neurons and degeneration of neuromuscular junctions. To improve disease progression, previous studies have suggested many options that have shown beneficial effects in diseases, especially stem cell therapy. In this study, we used repeated intramuscular transplantation of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) and observed positive effects on muscle atrophy and oxidative stress. In an in vivo study, motor function, body weight and survival rate were assessed, and skeletal muscle tissues were analyzed by western blotting and immunohistochemistry. After intramuscular transplantation, the hUCB-MSCs survived within the skeletal muscle for at least 1 week. Transplantation ameliorated muscle atrophy and the rate of neuromuscular degeneration in skeletal muscle through reductions in intracellular ROS levels. Both expression of skeletal muscle atrophy markers, muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx)/atrogin1 and muscle RING finger 1 (MuRF1), were also reduced; however, the reductions were not significant. Moreover, transplantation of hUCB-MSCs improved protein synthesis and inhibited the iNOS/NO signaling pathway through AMPK activation. Our results suggest that repeated intramuscular transplantation of hUCB-MSCs can be a practical option for stem cell therapy for ALS.

A novel extremely halophilic archaeon, strain RHB-CT, was isolated from a saturated brine pond of a solar saltern in Bolinao, Pangasinan, Philippines. Colonies were orange-red-pigmented, smooth, convex and round on a solid modified growth medium containing 25 % (w/v) of total salts. Cells of strain RHB-CT on the solid modified growth medium were ovoid-shaped (0.89–2.66 µm long), while the cells in a liquid modified growth medium were rod-shaped (1.53–5.65 µm long and 0.45–1.03 µm wide). The strain was Gram-stain-negative, motile and strictly aerobic. Strain RHB-CT grew with NaCl concentrations ranging from 10 to 30 % (w/v; optimum, 20–25 %), at pH 6.5–8.5 (optimum, pH 7.0–7.5) and at 20–55 °C (optimum, 40–45 °C). Furthermore, the strain grew even in the absence of Mg2+; however, when supplemented with Mg2+, growth was observed optimally at 0.2–0.4 M Mg2+. The 16S rRNA gene phylogeny inferred that the strain is a member of the genus Halorubrum and was related to Halorubrum xinjiangense CGMCC 1.3527T (99.0 %), Halorubrum sodomense DSM 3755T (98.8 %), Halorubrum coriense Ch2T (98.8 %), Halorubrum trapanicum NRC 34021T (98.4 %) and Halorubrum distributum JCM 9100T (98.1 %). The rpoB′ gene sequences also showed that strain RHB-CT is related to Hrr. xinjiangense JCM 12388T (97.1 %), Hrr. distributum JCM 9100T (97.1 %), Hrr. coriense JCM 9275T (96.5 %), Hrr. californiense JCM 14715T (96.5 %), Hrr. trapanicum JCM 10477T (96.3%), Hrr. sodomense JCM 8880T (96.2%) and Hrr. tebenquichense DSM 14210T (95.6 %). The DNA G+C content of strain RHB-CT was 68.7 mol% (genome). Digital DNA–DNA hybridization (dDDH) and average nucleotide identity (ANI) values between strain RHB-CT and the closely related species of Halorubrum were below 40 and 90 %, respectively, which are far below the thresholds to delineate a new species. The polar lipids of strain RHB-CT were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol phosphate methyl ester, phosphatidylglycerol sulphate and sulfated mannosyl glycosyl diether. Based on dDDH and ANI values, and the significant morphological and physiological differences from known taxa, it is hereby suggested that strain RHB-CT represents a novel species of the genus Halorubrum , for which the name Halorubrum salinarum sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is RHB-CT (=KCTC 4274T=CMS 2103T).

Background The Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence-Digital (QLF-D) system visualizes old and mature dental biofilm as red fluorescence. Risk factors for poor oral hygiene have been identified, however, few studies have evaluated the relationship between mature dental biofilm and hand motor functions. This study aimed to investigate the effects of two important manual motor functions for object manipulation —handgrip strength and manual dexterity— on the presence of red fluorescent dental biofilm in older community-dwelling Koreans using QLF-D, an optical device that reveals dental biofilm. Methods This cross-sectional study included 70 Korean participants aged ≥65 years, all of whom completed questionnaires and were tested for handgrip strength and manual dexterity. In total, 840 dental surfaces were photographed using QLF-D, and ΔR20 values, which reflect mature dental biofilm accumulation, were calculated. The t-test was performed to analyze the differences in the ∆R20 values according to sociodemographic characteristics, health-related characteristics and hand motor functions, while multiple linear regression analysis was used to investigate the effects of hand motor functions on the ∆R20 values. Results Multivariate regression analysis revealed that handgrip strength (β = −0.294) was the factor most strongly affecting mature dental biofilm accumulation (ΔR20), followed by tooth-brushing time (β = −0.262) and manual dexterity (β = −0.241). Conclusions Reductions in handgrip strength and manual dexterity were independent risk factors for pathogenic dental biofilm accumulation. The results of this investigation suggest that programs designed to prevent the decline, as well as improve, handgrip strength and manual dexterity might improve the oral hygiene of older adults.

The type 2A serine/threonine protein phosphatases (PP2As) are key components in regulating signal transduction and controlling cell metabolism. In particular, PP2A has a role in pollen-pistil interaction during pollination in Brassica. In this study, reverse genetics screening was used to obtain a T-DNA-inserted Brassica rapa mutant line with the self-compatible phenotype. The type 2A PP2A 55-kDa B regulatory subunit gene (PR55/B) in this mutant was knocked out by T-DNA insertion, and its expression level was decreased, which led to self-compatible phenotypes, such as seed setting by flower self-pollination. For functional analysis of this self-compatible mutant line, the full-length PR55/B gene related to the self-incompatibility mechanism was isolated and the down-regulation vector (pPPi) was constructed for introduction into Chinese cabbage. Chinese cabbage lines transformed with pPPi showed significantly decreased PR55/B mRNA accumulation, which yielded self-compatible phenotypes. These transgenic lines were found to set pods and seeds by the self-pollination in both buds and flowers. Down-regulation of PP2A, which is related to self-incompatibility signal transduction, led to higher levels of the phosphorylated S-locus receptor kinase (SRK) substrate, which phosphorylated SRK blocks activation of armadillo-repeat-containing 1 (ARC1). Thus, the self-incompatibility response by ARC1 was not activated, and this led to the self-compatible response. Finally, PP2A is proposed to be a significant factor in self-incompatibility of Chinese cabbage.

Cultivation and isolation of gut bacteria are necessary for understanding their role in the intestinal ecosystem. We isolated a novel bacterium, designated strain BG01T, from the faeces of a patient with Crohn's disease. Strain BG01T was a strictly anaerobic, rod-shaped, Gram-variable and endospore-forming bacterium. Strain BG01T possessed C12 : 0, C18 : 0 dimethyl aldehyde (DMA) and C18 : 1 ω9c DMA as predominant cellular fatty acids and meso-diaminopimelic acid as a diagnostic diamino acid. Strain BG01T grew at 15–45 °C (optimum, 37 °C), with 0–4 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 0–1 %), at pH 6–10 (optimum, pH 7) and was resistant to bile salt, but not to ampicillin, metronidazole, vancomycin and cefoperazone. Butyrate, propionate, oxalacetate and fumarate were produced as fermentation end products from Gifu anaerobic medium broth. Strain BG01T showed 97.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, and 92.0 and 48.5 % of average nucleotide identity and digital DNA–DNA hybridization values, respectively, with Anaerostipes caccae KCTC 15019T. Genomic analysis indicated that strain BG01T had a butyrate-producing pathway. The genomic G+C content of the strain was 43.5 mol%. Results of the phenotypic, phylogenetic and genotypic analyses indicated that strain BG01T represents a novel butyrate-producing species of the genus Anaerostipes , for which the name Anaerostipes hominis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is BG01T (=KCTC 15617T=JCM 32275T).

BackgroundHuman mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) therapy has recently been considered a promising treatment for atopic dermatitis (AD) due to their immunomodulation and tissue regeneration ability. In our previous studies, we demonstrated that hMSCs alleviate allergic inflammation in murine AD model by inhibiting the activation of mast cells and B cells. Also our phase I/IIa clinical trial showed clinical efficacy and safety of hMSCs in moderate-to-severe adult AD patients. However, hMSCs therapy against atopic dermatitis have had poor results in clinical field. Therefore, we investigated the reason behind this result. We hypothesized that drug–cell interaction could interfere with the therapeutic efficacy of stem cells, and investigated whether coadministration with pimecrolimus, one of the topical calcineurin inhibitors, could influence the therapeutic potential of human umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) in AD.MethodshUCB-MSCs were subcutaneously injected to AD-induced mice with or without pimecrolimus topical application. To examine whether pimecrolimus influenced the immunomodulatory activity of hUCB-MSCs, hUCB-MSCs were treated with pimecrolimus.ResultsPimecrolimus disturbed the therapeutic effect of hUCB-MSCs when they were co-administered in murine AD model. Moreover, the inhibitory functions of hUCB-MSCs against type 2 helper T (Th2) cell differentiation and mast cell activation were also deteriorated by pimecrolimus treatment. Interestingly, we found that pimecrolimus decreased the production of PGE2, one of the most critical immunomodulatory factors in hUCB-MSCs. And we demonstrated that pimecrolimus downregulated COX2-PGE2axis by inhibiting nuclear translocation of NFAT3.ConclusionsCoadministration of pimecrolimus with hMSCs could interfere with the therapeutic efficacy of hMSCs in atopic dermatitis, and this is the first study that figured out the interaction of hMSCs with other drugs in cell therapy of atopic dermatitis. Therefore, this study might give rise to improvement of the clinical application of hMSCs therapy and facilitate the widespread application of hMSCs in clinical field.

Background Invertebrates are a very attractive subject for studying host-microbe interactions because of their simple gut microbial community and host diversity. Studying the composition of invertebrate gut microbiota and the determining factors is essential for understanding their symbiotic mechanism. Cephalopods are invertebrates that have similar biological properties to vertebrates such as closed circulation system, an advanced nervous system, and a well-differentiated digestive system. However, it is not currently known whether their microbiomes have more in common with vertebrates or invertebrates. This study reports on the microbial composition of six cephalopod species and compares them with other mollusk and marine fish microbiomes to investigate the factors that shape the gut microbiota. Results Each cephalopod gut consisted of a distinct consortium of microbes, with Photobacterium and Mycoplasma identified as core taxa. The gut microbial composition of cephalopod reflected their host phylogeny, the importance of which was supported by a detailed oligotype-level analysis of operational taxonomic units assigned to Photobacterium and Mycoplasma. Photobacterium typically inhabited multiple hosts, whereas Mycoplasma tended to show host-specific colonization. Furthermore, we showed that class Cephalopoda has a distinct gut microbial community from those of other mollusk groups or marine fish. We also showed that the gut microbiota of phylum Mollusca was determined by host phylogeny, habitat, and diet. Conclusion We have provided the first comparative analysis of cephalopod and mollusk gut microbial communities. The gut microbial community of cephalopods is composed of distinctive microbes and is strongly associated with their phylogeny. The Photobacterium and Mycoplasma genera are core taxa within the cephalopod gut microbiota. Collectively, our findings provide evidence that cephalopod and mollusk gut microbiomes reflect host phylogeny, habitat, and diet. It is hoped that these data can contribute to future studies on invertebrate–microbe interactions.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, non-spore-forming, obligate aerobic, motile, rod-shaped, and flagellated bacterium, designated S11R28T, was isolated from the intestinal tract of a Korean shiner, Coreoleuciscus splendidus. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequences, strain S11R28T was identified as member of the genus Undibacterium in class Betaproteobacteria , and was closely related to Undibacterium parvum DSM 23061T (98.49 %). The isolate grew at 4–25 °C, pH 6–9, with 0 % (w/v) NaCl, and grew optimally at 20 °C, pH 8, in the absence of NaCl. The main cellular fatty acids were C16 : 0 and summed features 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or C16 : 1ω6c). The strain possessed diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine as predominant polar lipids, and ubiquinone Q-8 as a respiratory quinone. The polyamine profile composed of 2-hydroxyputrescine, spermidine, putrescine, and benzoic acid. A genomic DNA G+C content was 51.4 mol%. The average nucleotide identity between strains S11R28T and U. parvum DSM 23061T was 78.66 %. Thus, Undibacterium piscinae can be considered a novel species within the genus Undibacterium with the type strain S11R28T (=KCTC 62668T=JCM 33224T).

The purpose of this study was to explore and examine the constraints faced by managers as they attempt to scale up their sport for development and peace (SDP) organizations, and to identify the strategies they are employing to mitigate these constraints. Previous research has not examined constraints to scaling up in the SDP nonprofit space. Findings revealed three major themes related to challenges within four types of scaling up (quantitative, functional, political, organizational); skepticism about sport as a development tool, funding challenges leading to an entrepreneurial mind-set, and challenges associated with a general lack of business acumen among key leaders. Within each of these three themes, strategies for addressing these constraints are illuminated. These constraints and strategies are positioned within the broader nonprofit context, and theoretical and practical implications for scaling up SDP organizations are also explicated.

A novel Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-motile, non-violet-pigmented, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain H11R3T, was isolated from the feces of Oriental stork, Ciconia boyciana, collected from Seoul Grand Park Zoo, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that H11R3T formed a monophyletic clade with Iodobacter fluviatilis DSM 3764T, Iodobacter arcticus DSM 100243T, and Iodobacter limnosediminis DSM 103822T, with sequence similarities of 98.8, 98.6 and 98.4 %, respectively. H11R3T grew optimally at 15 °C, pH 8, with 0.5 % (w/v) NaCl. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-8 (Q-8), and polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified lipids, four unidentified phospholipids, and two unidentified aminophospholipids. The major fatty acids were summed feature 3 and C16 : 0, and the DNA G+C content of the genome is 48.0 mol%. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) value between strains H11R3T and I. fluviatilis NCTC 11159T (=DSM 3764T) is 83.7 %. On the basis of phenotypic, genotypic, phylogenetic and chemotaxonomic characteristics, strain H11R3T represents a novel species of the genus Iodobacter for which the name Iodobacter ciconiae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H11R3T (=KCTC 62666T=JCM 33283T).

A novel bacterial isolate, designated as strain BM15T, was isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of a blood cockle, Tegillarca granosa, which was collected from the foreshore of Beolgyo-eup, Republic of Korea. Strain BM15T was Gram-stain-negative, non-motile, strictly aerobic and short-rod-shaped. Optimum growth of the isolate occurred at 20 °C, in the presence of 4 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain BM15T belonged to the genus Paracoccus and had more than 97 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to ‘ Paracoccus zhejiangensis ’ J6 (97.40 % similarity) and Paracoccus lutimaris HDM-25T (97.04 %). The polar lipid profile of strain BM15T comprised phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified glycolipid and two unidentified lipids. The predominant respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-10. The major cellular fatty acid (>20 %) was summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c and/or C18 : 1 ω6c). The complete genome sequence of strain BM15T comprised 3,759,866 bp with 62.2 mol% G+C content. The results of the phylogenetic, phenotypic and genotypic analyses indicated that strain BM15T represents a novel species in the genus Paracoccus , for which the name Paracoccus tegillarcae is proposed. The type strain is BM15T (=KCTC 72032T=JCM 33289T).

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells that present immunosuppressive effects in experimental and clinical trials targeting various rare diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In addition, recent studies have reported tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase (WRS) possesses uncanonical roles such as angiostatic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, little is known about the function of WRS in MSC-based therapy. In this study, we investigated if a novel factor, WRS, secreted from MSCs has a role in amelioration of IBD symptoms and determined a specific mechanism underlying MSC therapy. Experimental colitis was induced by administration of 3% DSS solution to 8-week-old mice and human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs (hUCB-MSCs) were injected intraperitoneally. Secretion of WRS from hUCB-MSCs and direct effect of WRS on isolated CD4＋ T cells was determined via in vitro experiments and hUCB-MSCs showed significant therapeutic rescue against experimental colitis. Importantly, WRS level in serum of colitis induced mice decreased and recovered by administration of MSCs. Through in vitro examination, WRS expression of hUCB-MSCs increased when cells were treated with interferon-γ (IFN-γ). WRS was evaluated and revealed to have a role in inhibiting activated T cells by inducing apoptosis. In summary, IFN-γ- mediated secretion of WRS from MSCs has a role in suppressive effect on excessive inflammation and disease progression of IBD and brings new highlights in the immunomodulatory potency of hUCB-MSCs. Background This study investigated the relationship between manual dexterity and dental biofilm accumulation in independent older Koreans using Quantitative Light-Induced Fluorescence-Digital (QLF-D). Methods This cross-sectional study included 44 participants recruited from senior welfare facilities in South Korea and aged ≥65 years. Participants were surveyed using face-to-face structured interviews; manual dexterity was assessed using the Box and Blocks Test. To evaluate dental biofilm accumulation, the 528 surfaces of six index teeth were imaged using QLF-D and then quantified into Simple Plaque Scores (SPS) and ΔR20 values. The t-test and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyze differences in SPS and ΔR20 according to general characteristics and manual dexterity. Results Those who brushed their teeth ≤2 times per day had higher SPS and ΔR20 values on the lingual surface of tooth #24 than those who brushed ≥3 times per day (p Conclusions The low manual dexterity group had more dental biofilm—particularly on the lingual surfaces of teeth—and more mature biofilm than the normal group. These findings indicate that reduced manual dexterity could be a predictor of poor oral hygiene in independent older adults without hand disabilities. Therefore, we suggest manual dexterity be assessed in advance of dental biofilm assessment and tooth brushing instruction.

Although human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) hold considerable promise as an alternative therapeutic reagent for allergic disorders including atopic dermatitis (AD), the strategy for enhancing hMSC-based therapy remains challenging. We sought to investigate whether preconditioning with mast cell (MC) granules could enhance the therapeutic efficiency of human umbilical cord blood-derived MSCs (hUCB-MSCs) against AD. Methods: AD was experimentally induced in NC/Nga mice by repeated applications of 4% sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dermatophagoides farinae (Df) extract, and preconditioned hUCB-MSCs were subcutaneously injected. The therapeutic effect was determined by gross examination and additional ex vivo experiments performed using blood and skin samples to determine the resolution of allergic inflammation. To explore the underlying mechanisms, several co-culture assays with primary isolated immune cells and wound closure assays were conducted. Results: Pretreatment of MC granules enhanced the therapeutic effects of hUCB-MSCs by attenuating the symptoms of AD in an experimental animal model. MC granule-primed cells suppressed the activation of major disease-inducing cells, MCs and B lymphocytes more efficiently than naïve cells both in vitro and in vivo. Histamine-mediated upregulation of the COX-2 signaling pathway was shown to play a crucial role in suppression of the allergic immune response by MC-pretreated hUCB-MSCs. Moreover, MC pretreatment improved the wound healing ability of hUCB-MSCs. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that pre-exposure to MC granules improved the therapeutic effect of hUCB-MSCs on experimental AD by resolving the allergic immune reaction and accelerating the tissue regeneration process more efficiently than naïve cells, suggesting a potential enhancement strategy for stem cell-based therapy.

We previously demonstrated that the direct transplantation of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) into the dentate gyrus ameliorated the neurological symptoms of Niemann–Pick type C1 (NPC1)-mutant mice. However, the clinical presentation of NPC1-mutant mice was not fully understood with a molecular mechanism. Here, we found 14,15-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (14,15-EET), a cytochrome P450 (CYP) metabolite, from hUCB-MSCs and the cerebella of NPC1-mutant mice and investigated the functional consequence of this metabolite. Our screening of the CYP2J family indicated a dysregulation in the CYP system in a cerebellar-specific manner. Moreover, in Purkinje cells, CYP2J6 showed an elevated expression level compared to that of astrocytes, granule cells, and microglia. In this regard, we found that one CYP metabolite, 14,15-EET, acts as a key mediator in ameliorating cholesterol accumulation. In confirming this hypothesis, 14,15-EET treatment reduced the accumulation of cholesterol in human NPC1 patient-derived fibroblasts in vitro by suppressing cholesterol synthesis and ameliorating the impaired autophagic flux. We show that the reduced activity within the CYP system in the cerebellum could cause the neurological symptoms of NPC1 patients, as 14,15-EET treatment significantly rescued cholesterol accumulation and impaired autophagy. We also provide evidence that the intranasal administration of hUCB-MSCs is a highly promising alternative to traumatic surgical transplantation for NPC1 patients., Inherited metabolic disease: Restoring motor function by reducing cholesterol An acid secreted by stem cells can reduce the excess cholesterol caused by a genetic metabolic disorder. Niemann–Pick type C disease is a rare, inherited condition that causes defective muscular development and progressive neurological degeneration. A key disease mechanism is the excessive accumulation of cholesterol within cells. Kyung-Sun Kang at Seoul National University, South Korea, and co-workers have demonstrated that a metabolite molecule called 14,15-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (14,15-EET) derived from stem cells from human umbilical cord blood significantly reduced cholesterol in Neimann-Pick Type C mouse models and human cell samples. The team administered the stem cell therapy non-invasively via the nose, and observed significant improvements in motor function in the mice. Experiments in both animals and cells showed that the treatment resulted in reduced cholesterol levels and the correction of defective signalling within cells.

Neonatal calf diarrhea is a common disease leading to a major economic loss for cattle producers worldwide. Several infectious and noninfectious factors are implicated in calf diarrhea, but disease control remains problematic because of the multifactorial etiology of the disease. Here, we conducted diagnostic multiplex PCR assay and meta-omics analysis (16S rRNA gene-based metataxonomics and untargeted transcriptional profiling) of rectal content of normal and diarrheic beef calves (n = 111). In the diarrheic calf gut, we detected both microbial compositional dysbiosis (i.e., increased abundances of the family Enterobacteriaceae members and their lytic bacteriophages) and functional dysbiosis (i.e., elevated levels of aerobic respiration and virulence potential). The calf diarrheic transcriptome mirrored the gene expression of the bovine host and was enriched in cellular pathways of sulfur metabolism, innate immunity, and gut motility. We then isolated 12 nontoxigenic Enterobacteriaceae strains from the gut of diarrheic calves. Feeding a strain mixture to preweaning mice resulted in a significantly higher level of fecal moisture content, with decreased body weight gain and shortened colon length. The presented findings suggest that gut inflammation followed by a prolonged expansion of nontoxigenic autochthonous Enterobacteriaceae contributes to the onset of diarrhea in preweaning animals. IMPORTANCE Calf diarrhea is the leading cause of death of neonatal calves worldwide. Several infectious and noninfectious factors are implicated in calf diarrhea, but disease control remains problematic because of the multifactorial etiology of the disease. The major finding of the current study centers around the observation of microbial compositional and functional dysbiosis in rectal samples from diarrheic calves. These results highlight the notion that gut inflammation followed by a prolonged expansion of autochthonous Enterobacteriaceae contributes to the onset of calf diarrhea. Moreover, this condition possibly potentiates the risk of invasion of notorious enteric pathogens, including Salmonella spp., and the emergence of inflammation-resistant (or antibiotic-resistant) microbiota via active horizontal gene transfer mediated by lytic bacteriophages.

While the neuropathological characteristics of Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) result in a fatal diagnosis, the development of clinically available therapeutic agent remains a challenge. Here we propose graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as a potential candidate for the impaired functions in NPC in vivo. In addition to the previous findings that GQDs exhibit negligible long-term toxicity and are capable of penetrating the blood-brain barrier, GQD treatment reduces the aggregation of cholesterol in the lysosome through expressed physical interactions. GQDs also promote autophagy and restore defective autophagic flux, which, in turn, decreases the atypical accumulation of autophagic vacuoles. More importantly, the injection of GQDs inhibits the loss of Purkinje cells in the cerebellum while also demonstrating reduced activation of microglia. The ability of GQDs to alleviate impaired functions in NPC proves the promise and potential of the use of GQDs toward resolving NPC and other related disorders.

Our understanding of the interactions between microbial communities and their niche in the host gut has improved owing to recent advances in environmental microbial genomics. Integration of metagenomic and metataxonomic sequencing data with other omics data to study the gut microbiome has become increasingly common, but downstream analysis after data integration and interpretation of complex omics data remain challenging. Here, we review studies that have explored the gut microbiome signature using omics approaches, including metagenomics, metataxonomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics. We further discuss recent analytics programs to analyze and integrate multi-omics datasets and further utilization of omics data with other advanced techniques, such as adaptive immune receptor repertoire sequencing, microbial culturomics, and machine learning, to evaluate important microbiome characteristics in the gut.

Thermal and massage therapies have long been used to control pain. Although spinal thermal massage (STM) has been used worldwide, its effectiveness has not been proven in a controlled clinical study. We here conducted a non-randomized controlled trial to assess the pain-relieving and immunomodulatory effects of STM in old-aged patients experiencing pain or disability. The experimental group was treated with STM five times a week for 8 weeks and rehabilitative regular care (RRC). The control group was treated with only RRC. Pain and immunological parameters were tested before treatment and after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment. The scores of three pain parameters were lowered by STM, and the differences between the groups were statistically significant at the two time points (p < 0.01). Quality of life determined using the 3-level EuroQol five-dimensional questionnaire scores was significantly higher in patients in the experimental group than those in the control group. Effect sizes (ES) were in the range of medium to large in the pain-related measures (0.54–1.22). The total leukocyte counts and the proportions of lymphocytes and subsets were not significantly different between the groups, whereas the proportions of monocytes and natural killer (NK) cells were higher in the experimental group than in the control group after 8 weeks (p < 0.05). The production of interleukin (IL)-4 and interferon γ in T cells was not significantly different between the groups, whereas the production of IL-2 was high in the control group. However, there was a significant increase in IFN-γ production by NK cells in the experimental group (at 4 weeks, p < 0.05). ES were medium in the immunological measures (0.53–0.68). No significant difference was observed in the production of proinflammatory cytokines, IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor α, or IL-6 between the groups. In conclusion, STM treatment has a positive effect on subjective pain and quality of life. It also enhanced NK cell proportion and activity, suggesting that STM may be beneficial in the prevention of viral diseases and cancer in old-aged people.

The orphan nuclear receptor ESRRA (estrogen related receptor alpha) is critical in mitochondrial biogenesis and macroautophagy/autophagy function; however, the roles of ESRRA in intestinal function remain uncharacterized. Herein we identified that ESRRA acts as a key regulator of intestinal homeostasis by amelioration of colonic inflammation through activation of autophagic flux and control of host gut microbiota. Esrra-deficient mice presented with increased susceptibility to dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis with upregulation of intestinal inflammation. In addition, esrra-null mice had depressed AMP-activated protein kinase phosphorylation (AMPK), lower levels of TFEB (transcription factor EB), and accumulation of SQSTM1/p62 (sequestosome 1) with defective mitochondria in intestinal tissues. Esrra-deficient mice showed distinct gut microbiota composition and significantly higher microbial diversity than wild-type (WT) mice. Cohousing or fecal microbiota transplantation from WT mice to Esrra-deficient mice ameliorated DSS-induced colitis severity. Importantly, patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) had significantly decreased ESRRA expression in intestinal mucosal tissues that correlated with disease activity, suggesting clinical relevance of ESRRA in UC. Taken together, our results show that ESRRA contributes to intestinal homeostasis through autophagy activation and gut microbiota control to protect the host from detrimental inflammation and dysfunctional mitochondria. Graphene quantum dots attenuate intestinal inflammation by modulating immune homeostasis., While graphene and its derivatives have been suggested as a potential nanomedicine in several biomimetic models, their specific roles in immunological disorders still remain elusive. Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) may be suitable for treating intestinal bowel diseases (IBDs) because of their low toxicity in vivo and ease of clearance. Here, GQDs are intraperitoneally injected to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)–induced chronic and acute colitis model, and its efficacy has been confirmed. In particular, GQDs effectively prevent tissue degeneration and ameliorate intestinal inflammation by inhibiting TH1/TH17 polarization. Moreover, GQDs switch the polarization of macrophages from classically activated M1 to M2 and enhance intestinal infiltration of regulatory T cells (Tregs). Therefore, GQDs effectively attenuate excessive inflammation by regulating immune cells, indicating that they can be used as promising alternative therapeutic agents for the treatment of autoimmune disorders, including IBDs.

Castration of young males is widely used in the cattle industry to improve meat quality, but the mechanism linking hypogonadism and host metabolism is not clear. Here, we use metataxonomic and metabolomic approaches to evaluate the intestinal microbiota and host metabolism in male, castrated male (CtM), and female cattle. After pubescence, the CtM cattle harbor distinct ileal microbiota dominated by the family Peptostreptococcaceae and exhibit distinct serum and muscle amino acid profiles (i.e., highly abundant branched-chain amino acids), with increased extra- and intramuscular fat storage. We also evaluate the causative factor(s) that underpin the alteration of the intestinal microbiota and host metabolic phenotype in response to hypogonadism. Castration of male mice phenocopies both the intestinal microbial alterations and obese-prone metabolism observed in cattle. Antibiotic treatment and fecal microbiota transplantation experiments in a mouse model confirm that the intestinal microbial alterations associated with hypogonadism are a key contributor to the obese phenotype in the CtM animals. Collectively, targeting the gut microbiota is a potential therapeutic strategy for the treatment of both hypogonadism and obesity.

Background : Testosterone deficiency is positively correlated with fat accumulation and obesity-related comorbidities, such as metabolic syndrome. A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, rod-shaped, flagellated bacterial strain, designated AMac2203T, was isolated from the gut of the cinereous vulture, Aegypiusmonachus, collected from the Seoul Grand Park Zoo, Republic of Korea. Strain AMac2203T grew optimally at 15–25 °C, pH 7–8 and in the presence of 3–5 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis revealed 97.4–97.9 % and 96.9–97.3 % sequence similarities of the 16S rRNA genes to its counterparts in Oceanisphaera profunda SM1222T and Oceanisphaera ostreae T-w6T, respectively. The predominant fatty acids (>10 %) of strain AMac2203T were summed feature 3 (C16 : 0 ω7c and/or C16 : 1 ω6c, 33.6 %), summed feature 8 (C18 : 1 ω7c, 24.5 %) and C16 : 0 (19.9 %). The primary isoprenoid quinone was ubiquinone-8. Polar lipids included phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified amino lipid and an unidentified lipid. Based on complete genome sequencing of strain AMac2203T and the closest related type strain, O. profunda , the OrthoANI value is 77.5 %, which is below the 95 % cut-off for species demarcation. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain AMac2203T is 47.1 mol%. Thus, strain AMac2203T represents a novel species candidate of the genus Oceanisphaera . We propose the name Oceanisphaera avium sp. nov., with strain AMac2203T (=KCTC 62118T=JCM 32207T) as the type strain.

A novel coccus-shaped, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and aerobic bacterium, designated strain NSG39T, was isolated from the intestine of a Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that the newly isolated strain NSG39T was closely related to Tessaracoccus flavus RP1T (98.0 %). The isolate grew at 15–37 °C, pH 7–9 and 0–4 % (w/v) salinity, with optimal growth at 30 °C, pH 8 and 0 % (w/v) salinity. The cell wall of the organism contained ll-diaminopimelic acid as a diagnostic diamino acid, and ribose, mannose, glucose and galactose as diagnostic sugars. The polar lipid comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, three glycolipids and four unidentified polar lipids. The major cellular fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0 (47.2 %). The major menaquinone was MK-9 (H4). The DNA G+C content of the isolate was 68.8 mol%. The genome-based orthologous average nucleotide identity value for strain NSG39T and T. flavus RP1T was 76.6 %. Based on the phylogenetic analysis and its biological characteristics, strain NSG39T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Tessaracoccus , for which the name Tessaracoccus aquimaris is proposed. The type strain is NSG39T (=KACC 17540T=JCM 19289T).

A rod-shaped, Gram-stain-positive, motile and aerobic bacterium, designated LM2416T, was isolated from faeces of Lophuras winhoii living in Seoul Grand Park, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LM2416T belonged to the genus Virgibacillus , sharing high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Virgibacillus necropolis LMG 19488T (99.0 %), Virgibacillus carmonensis LMG 20964T (98.4 %), Virgibacillus arcticus Hal 1T (98.3 %) and Virgibacillus flavescens S1-20T (97.9 %). The isolate grew at 10–30 °C, pH 6–7 and 0–20 % (w/v) NaCl. Optimal growth was observed at 30 °C, pH 6–7 and 10 % (w/v) NaCl. The major fatty acid was anteiso-C15 : 0. Polar lipids were composed of phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, three unknown phospholipids and two unknown aminophospholipids. The main menaquinone was MK-7. Strain LM2416T had alanine, lysine, glutamic acid, glycine and aspartic acid as cell-wall amino acids and ribose as a cell-wall sugar. The whole genome sequences of strain LM2416T and V. necropolis KCTC 3820T were sequenced by PacBio RS II sequencing. The genome sequence-based G+C content of strain LM2416T was 39.5 mol%. The orthologous average nucleotide identity value, showing genetic relatedness between strain LM2416T and V. necropolis KCTC 3820T, was 78.3 %. Based on the phylogenetic, biochemical, chemotaxonomic and genotypic data presented in this study, strain LM2416T is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Virgibacillus , for which the name Virgibacillus phasianinus is proposed. The type strain is LM2416T (=KCTC 33927T=JCM 32144T).

A strictly anaerobic, Gram-stain-positive, non-motile and coccoid- or oval-shaped bacterium, designated strain KB1T, was isolated from a faecal sample of a patient with diverticulitis in South Korea. Degeneracies in the 16S rRNA gene sequence of strain KB1T were resolved by cloning, which yielded five different sequences with heterogeneity. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain KB1T formed a monophyletic branch with species in the genus Blautia , with highest sequence similarity to the type strain of Blautia producta (97.7–98.9 %), followed by Blautia coccoides (97.5–98.1 %). Strain KB1T was able to grow at temperatures of between 15 and 42 °C, with optimal growth at 37 °C, and in the presence of 20 % dehydrated bile. Acetic acid, succinic acid, lactic acid and fumaric acid were produced by strain KB1T from Gifu anaerobic medium broth as metabolic fermentation end-products. The major cellular fatty acids of strain KB1T were C14 : 0, C16 : 0 and C16 : 0 dimethyl aldehyde. The DNA G+C content was 46.3 mol%. The average nucleotide identity value between strain KB1T and the type strain of B. producta was 84.1 %. On the basis of polyphasic analysis, strain KB1T represents a novel species in the genus Blautia , for which the name Blautia hominis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is KB1T (=KCTC 15618T=JCM 32276T).
