2. Tectonic and sedimentary architecture of the Karukéra spur: A record of the Lesser Antilles fore-arc deformations since the Neogene.

The Karukéra spur is an easternmost submerged rise of the Lesser Antilles fore-arc in the Guadeloupe archipelago, culminating about 4000 m above the fore-arc basin 150 km west of the deformation front. The analysis of 3500 km 2D high-resolution multichannel seismic reflection and multibeam bathymetric data, and the study of 14 core samples, allow for the first time to reconstruct its sedimentary anatomy and tectonic evolution. Seven seismic units (U S1 to U S7 ) are evidenced, organised into four major depositional sequences separated by erosional surfaces. Units U S1 to U S4 thicken to the south-southeast on the spur. The sedimentary deposits rest upon a deeply eroded metamorphic basement of the Caribbean Plate as in La Désirade Island. Sequence 1 (units U S1 and U S2 ) remains unknown in its lower part because it does not outcrop. Its upper part comprises early Miocene shallow water carbonates. Sequence S2 (Unit U S3 ) only comprises an upper Miocene transgressive systems tract deposited into basinal environment. It is bounded by major erosional surfaces SB2 and SB3. Sequence 3 (U S4 to U S6 ) is Zanclean to Pleistocene. It is dominantly composed of shallow water, reefal deposits. Sequence 4 corresponds to recent deposits. The Karukéra spur experienced three main extensional episodes with alternations between uplift and subsidence periods. Uplifts are responsible for emersions and erosions. Subsidence severely drowned shallow water deposits. The first extensional episode led to the formation of horsts and grabens in the basement, prior to early Miocene deposits. The second extensional episode occurred during upper Miocene, in accordance with data in surrounding islands. The third tectonic episode developed since Calabrian. Noticeable is the constant reactivation of N130°–N150°, N150°–N180° and N40° trending faults since early Miocene and the neoformation of E–W trending faults since Calabrian. Our results suggest that at the latitude of Guadeloupean archipelago the Lesser Antilles subduction zone is an erosional margin because of the successive sweepings of the Santa Lucia then Tiburon Ridges. The dissection of the genetic architecture of quantitative traits, including the number and locations of quantitative trait loci (QTL) and their main and epistatic effects, has been an important topic in current QTL mapping. We extend the Bayesian model selection framework for mapping multiple epistatic QTL affecting continuous traits to dynamic traits in experimental crosses. The extension inherits the efficiency of Bayesian model selection and the flexibility of the Legendre polynomial model fitting to the change in genetic and environmental effects with time. We illustrate the proposed method by simultaneously detecting the main and epistatic QTLs for the growth of leaf age in a doubled-haploid population of rice. The behavior and performance of the method are also shown by computer simulation experiments. The results show that our method can more quickly identify interacting QTLs for dynamic traits in the models with many numbers of genetic effects, enhancing our understanding of genetic architecture for dynamic traits. Our proposed method can be treated as a general form of mapping QTL for continuous quantitative traits, being easier to extend to multiple traits and to a single trait with repeat records. 4. The Vulnerable Elders-13 survey predicts 5-year functional decline and mortality outcomes in older ambulatory care patients.

- Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To test the predictive properties of the Vulnerable Elders-13 Survey (VES-13) a short tool that predicts functional decline and mortality over a 1- to 2-year followup interval over a 5-year interval. DESIGN: Longitudinal evaluation with mean follow-up of 4.5 years. SETTING: Two managed-care organizations. PARTICIPANTS: Six hundred forty-nine communitydwelling older adults (>/=75) enrolled in the Assessing Care of Vulnerable Elders observational study who screened positive for symptoms of falls or fear of falling, bothersome urinary incontinence, or memory problems. MEASUREMENTS: VES-13 score (range 1--10, higher score indicates worse prognosis), functional decline (decline in count of 5 activities of daily living or nursing home entry), and deaths. RESULTS: Higher VES-13 scores were associated with greater predicted probability of death and decline in older patients over a mean observation period of 4.5 years. For each additional VES-13 point, the odds of the combined outcome of functional decline or death was 1.37 (95% confidence interval (CI)=1.25--1.50), and the area under the receiver operating curve was 0.75 (95% CI=0.71-- 0.80). In the Cox proportional hazards model predicting time to death, the hazard ratio was 1.23 (95% CI=1.19-- 1.27) per additional VES-13 point. CONCLUSION: This study extends the utility of the VES-13 to clinical decisions that require longer-term prognostic estimates of functional status and survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: This study aims to examine the effect of physical activity (PA) intensity on tobacco or alcohol abuse, suicide behaviours and psychopathological symptoms in junior and senior high school students in China. Methods: A total of 5453 students from nine middle schools participated in a self-administered anonymous survey to report their frequency of moderate and vigorous PA at a normal learning week. Tobacco or alcohol use in the past 30 days, suicide behaviours during the past 12 months were asked. The Symptoms Checklist 90 was used to assess general mental problem and nine special psychopathological symptoms. The Rosenberg's Self-esteem Scale and School Life Satisfaction Rating Questionnaire for Adolescent were selected to rate the respondents' self-esteem and school life satisfaction. Results: Percentage of high-, low–moderate- and very-low-intensity PA was 22.0%, 37.0% and 41.0%, respectively. By using multivariable multinomial logistic regression, it was indicated that low–moderate-intensity PA was a protective factor of depression (odds ratio (OR) was 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) was 0.40–0.91) and psychotic symptoms (OR 0.54, 95% CI 0.31–0.93), while high-intensity PA was a risk factor of binge drinking (OR: 1.81, 95% CI: 1.29–2.54), suicide ideation (OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.04–1.54), general psychological disorders (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.11–1.84), and hostile symptoms (OR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.03–2.07). Conclusion: Different intensity PA in adolescents had different association with risk health behaviours and psychopathological symptoms. The reasons are worth further researching. This study presents the first ever investigation aimed at accurate numerical modelling of the behavior of hybrid fibre reinforced polymer (FRP)-timber laminated (HFT) Cee section columns under axial compression. Existing numerical modelling approaches for modelling thin-walled structural members, such as modelling using composite laminate shell elements, orthotropic laminate shell elements with experimentally obtained properties, were found to either over-predict or under-predict the stiffness and capacity depending on the approach used. Existing modelling approaches fail to accurately capture the effects of possible interlaminar slips under combined flexural and axial loading. A new modelling approach using ABAQUS subroutine UGENS was proposed incorporating both in-plane stiffness matrix and bending stiffness matrix simultaneously, forming the general section stiffness matrix. Failure initiation criteria and a damage evolution law were incorporated in the subroutine to derive the damaged section stiffness matrix. The predictions from the proposed numerical model showed much improved agreement with the test results. • Existing numerical approaches for modelling laminated structures were found to be inadequate for modelling HFT Cee sections columns. • Both axial and bending properties are important in modelling the behaviour of HFT Cee section columns. • A numerical model considering different membrane and bending stiffnesses was developed to predict the behaviour of the HFT Cee section columns. • Proposed numerical model was found to accurately capture the behaviour of HFT Cee section columns. The research studied the effects of l -methionine (l -Met) on growth performance, carcass quality, feather traits, and small intestinal morphology of Pekin ducks compared with conventional dl -methionine (dl -Met). A total of 1080, 1-day-old male Pekin ducks were randomly allotted to 9 groups with 6 replicate pens of 20 birds each. During the starter phase (1 to 14 d), ducks were fed a basal diet (Met, 0.30%) or that supplemented with dl -Met or l -Met at 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, or 0.20% of feed. During the grower phase (15 to 35 d), ducks were fed a basal diet (Met, 0.24%) or that supplemented with dl - Met or l -Met at 0.04, 0.08, 0.12, or 0.16% of feed. Compared with ducks fed the basal diet, supplementation with either dl - Met or l -Met increased the body weight (BW) of ducks at days 14 and 35, increased average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI), decreased F:G at the starter phase, and increased ADG over the whole 35-d period (P < 0.05). The efficacy of l -Met compared to dl - Met was 140.1% for 14-d BW, 137.6% for ADG and 121.0% for F:G for days 1 to 14. Ducks fed diets supplemented with l -Met had greater proportion of leg muscle, higher than in ducks provided with dl - Met (P < 0.05). The breast muscle proportion was enhanced with dl - Met rather than l - Met supplementation (P < 0.01). The back feathers score and fourth primary wing feather length were increased with dl - Met or l -Met supplementation (P < 0.01), and there was increased efficacy of l -Met relative to dl - Met for back feathers score (153.1%). Dietary dl - Met or l - Met supplementation increased villus height of ileal mucosa of ducks at days 14 and 35 (P < 0.01). Overall, dietary l -Met or dl - Met supplementation affected the growth performance of ducks during the starter phase, and improved the feather traits and small intestinal morphology. The efficacy of l -Met to dl - Met ranged from 120 to 140% for growth performance of young ducks (1 to 14 d) and was 153% for the feather traits of ducks (35 d). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Aims: Soft tissue sarcomas are uncommon, but relatively aggressive tumours. Although surgical resection remains the primary therapeutic modality for all localised tumours, brachytherapy combined with function-preserving excision is a popular treatment for extremity soft tissue sarcomas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of interstitial permanent brachytherapy using I125 seeds in patients undergoing the combined modality in the management of soft tissue sarcomas at our institution. Materials and methods: Between January 2007 and January 2012, 110 adult patients aged 18–86 years (median = 44 years) with extremity soft tissue sarcomas and who underwent interstitial permanent brachytherapy as part of the local treatment were included in this study. Treatment included wide local excision of the tumour and brachytherapy using a permanent I125 implantation. Complications were assessed in terms of wound complication and peripheral nerve damage. Results: After a median follow-up of 43.7 months, the local control, disease-free survival and overall survival for the entire cohort studied were 74, 54 and 77%, respectively. The actual rates of wound complications requiring reoperation and nerve damage were 4.5 and 1.8%, respectively. Conclusions: We conclude that interstitial permanent brachytherapy with I125 after function-preserving surgery results in a satisfactory outcome in patients with extremity soft tissue sarcomas and the complication rate is low. The western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is an invasive species and currently occurs in only a few areas in China. An easy, accurate and developmental-stage independent method to identify F. occidentalis would be a valuable tool to facilitate pest management decision making and, more importantly, to provide an early warning so actions can be taken to prevent its introduction into non-infested areas. Morphological identification of thrips adults and, to a lesser extent, of second-stage larvae is the main method currently available to identify F. occidentalis. Molecular identification, however, can be easily carried out by a non-thrips-specialist with a little training. In this study, DNA sequence data [within the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene ( COI)] and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were utilized to develop a molecular diagnostic marker for F. occidentalis. A primer set and PCR cycling parameters were designed for the amplification of a single marker fragment (340 bp) of F. occidentalis COI mtDNA. Specificity tests performed on 28 thrips species, efficacy tests performed on five immature developmental stages as well as on male and female adults and tests on primer sensitivity all demonstrated the diagnostic utility of this marker. Furthermore, the primer set was tested on seventeen F. occidentalis populations from different countries and invaded areas in China and proved to be applicable for all geographic populations. It was used successfully to clarify the distribution of F. occidentalis in the Beijing metro area. These results suggested that this diagnostic PCR assay provides a quick, simple and reliable molecular technique for the identification of F. occidentalis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and study aims: The use of natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) for gastroenterostomy has been previously reported, but it remains technically challenging and additional assistance is often needed. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a novel method for the creation of a gastroenterostomy using NOTES with an occluder. Methods: Transgastric endoscopic gastroenterostomy was performed in 12 healthy female dogs using a therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscope and a partially covered occluder. The occluder was removed with a snare 1 week later. The patency of the gastroenterostomy was confirmed by endoscopy, contrast radiological study, necropsy, and histological examination after 2 weeks. Results: NOTES gastroenterostomy with an occluder was successful in all 12 dogs. The mean operative time was 32.3 ± 10.3min (range 20.3-53.5). One dog (the first; 8.3 %) died 4 days after the operation of severe intra-abdominal infection due to incorrect deployment of the occluder and poor bowel preparation. Minor bleeding occurred at the anastomosis after removal of the occluder in two of the remaining dogs (18.2 %). Necropsy revealed postoperative adhesions that had developed at the anastomotic site in one dog (9.1 %). No anastomotic leakage or intestinal obstruction was observed. Complete healing of the anastomosis was confirmed on histological evaluation. Conclusion: Gastroenterostomy performed entirely by NOTES using an occluder was technically feasible in this survival animal model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Objectives: : This paper fabricated a cost-effective dsDNA-coupled plate (dcPlate) and applied it to measure the abundance and DNA-binding activity of a DNA-binding protein (DBP). Design and Methods: : The dcPlate was manufactured by covalently immobilizing an amino-modified oligonucleotide in wells of the plate coated with N-oxysuccinimide esters. The dcPlate was applied to measure the abundance of DNA-binding activity of a DBP in the same four steps, including protein incubation, primary antibody binding, enzyme-linked secondary antibody binding, and colorimetric development. Results: : The detections of three purified DBPs including NF-κB, AP1 and SP1, and HeLa cell nuclear extract and assays of DNA-binding activity of NF-κB p50 to five various DNA sequences demonstrated that dcPlate can be used to measure the abundance of DBPs quantitatively and assay DNA-binding activity of DBPs in high throughputs format. Auditory hair cells receive olivocochlear efferent innervation, which refines tonotopic mapping, improves sound discrimination, and mitigates acoustic trauma. The olivocochlear synapse involves α9α10 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs), which assemble in hair cells only coincident with cholinergic innervation and do not express in recombinant mammalian cell lines. Here, genome-wide screening determined that assembly and surface expression of α9α10 require ligand binding. Ion channel function additionally demands an auxiliary subunit, which can be transmembrane inner ear (TMIE) or TMEM132e. Both of these single-pass transmembrane proteins are enriched in hair cells and underlie nonsyndromic human deafness. Inner hair cells from TMIE mutant mice show altered postsynaptic α9α10 function and retain α9α10-mediated transmission beyond the second postnatal week associated with abnormally persistent cholinergic innervation. Collectively, this study provides a mechanism to link cholinergic input with α9α10 assembly, identifies unexpected functions for human deafness genes TMIE/TMEM132e, and enables drug discovery for this elusive nAChR implicated in prevalent auditory disorders. Based on swath bathymetry, two-dimensional, high-resolution seismic reflection profiles, and Ocean Drilling Program/Deep Sea Drilling Project (ODP/DSDP) data, we describe a seafloor honeycomb pattern and propose a model for its formation in Pliocene-Miocene carbonate deposited on the uneven oceanic basement of the Carnegie Ridge (offshore Ecuador). Hydrothermal fluids derived from the basement aquifer fractured and dissolved carbonate sediment, creating seafloor pits above basements highs. Fluids expelled along polygonal faults may have assisted the nucleation of seafloor depressions. At the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, strong bottom currents scoured previously damaged sediments, enlarging the initial depressions and producing the seafloor honeycomb pattern. This regional erosive episode was contemporaneous with the final closing of the Isthmus of Panama and the clogging of the Ecuador Trench by the subduction of the Carnegie Ridge, so that the honeycomb pattern may be viewed as a regional marker of these two geodynamic events. The high performance of alloys is dependent on microstructure. And, alloying elements have significant influence on microstructure. In order to study the effect of Si and Mn elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties, different content of alloying elements, Si and Mn, are added into the matrix Al-4.5Cu alloy. The compounded alloys (CA) were prepared by vacuum suction casting. The microstructure of CA is investigated by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). And, the mechanical properties are tested by a universal testing machine and a microhardness tester. Analysis is conducted by comparing experimental results of CA with different content of Si and Mn. It was found that the irregular lamellar structure of the CA appeared with the increase of Si and Mn content. The solid solution was coexisted with the irregular lamellar laminated structure when both Si and Mn contents are 3 wt.%. The tensile strength of CA is the highest when the content of both Si and Mn is 1 wt%. Its ultimate tensile stress reaches 205.87 MPa, the elongation reaches 34.97% and the microhardness reaches 74.6 HV. When both Si and Mn contents are 2 wt.%, the tensile strength of CA is the weakest. Its ultimate tensile stress reaches 146.65 MPa, the elongation reaches 24.15% and the microhardness reaches 60.2 HV. The elongation of the CA decreases with an increase in Si and Mn contents. 21. A survey of aflatoxin M1 of raw cow milk in China during the four seasons from 2013 to 2015.

In the present study, a total of 1550 raw cow milk samples were collected from Southern, Northern, Northeast, and Western regions of China during the four seasons from 2013 to 2015. Samples were analyzed for aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In 2013, AFM1 was detected in 21% of 366 raw cow milk samples with levels ranging between 0.01 and 0.24 μg/L. In 11.7% of samples, AFM1 levels were >0.05 μg/L, which is the legal limit in the European Union. The mean and median of positive samples were 0.069 ± 0.052 μg/L and 0.056 μg/L, respectively. In 2014, AFM1 was detected in 28.5% of 624 raw cow milk samples, with levels ranging from 0.01 to 0.25 μg/L. Of these samples, 7.7% had AFM1 levels exceeding 0.05 μg/L, with a mean of 0.042 ± 0.039 μg/L and median of 0.028 μg/L. AFMI was detected in 14.1% of 560 raw cow milk samples in 2015, with levels ranging from 0.01 to 0.144 μg/L. In 1.8% of these samples, AFM1 levels were above 0.05 μg/L, with a mean of 0.026 ± 0.024 μg/L and median of 0.017 μg/L. Our results demonstrate that AFM1 levels of the samples did not exceed the legal limit of 0.5 μg/L in China, the United States, and Codex Alimentarius Commission. Geographically, AFM1 contamination was more predominant in raw cow milk samples from Southern China than in those from other regions, with a higher number of samples containing AFM1 levels above 0.05 μg/L in 2013, 2014, and 2015. AFM1 levels were higher in autumn than in the other seasons during the entire study period. According to our survey, AFM1 contamination has been well-controlled in China during recent years; however, some samples still exceeded the European Union (EU) legal limit. Selected high-resolution seismic-reflection profiles and multibeam bathymetry acquired along the convergent Ecuador margin during the ATACAMES cruise on onboard the R/V L'Atalante (Jan.15-Feb.18, 2012) allow a preliminary evaluation of the neotectonic development and stratigraphic evolution of the margin based on the sismo-stratigraphic analysis of Quaternary sediment preserved on the margin shelf and upper slope. We present three major preliminary results. (1) The evolution of the Esmeraldas, Guayaquil and Santa Elena canyons. The head of the Esmeraldas canyon is the location of a continuous significant sediment transport. The Guayaquil canyon shows several episodes of deposition and incision. Aggrading sedimentation pattern in the canyon records several changes in relative sea-level. The subsidence of the Gulf of Guayaquil probably contributes to the good preservation of the canyon filling stages. The Santa Elena canyon is controlled by a SW-NE trending normal fault. (2) Variations of sediment accumulation and relative vertical motions are shown along-strike the shelf edge. Offshore the uplifted Manta peninsula, a pronounced subsidence of the shelf edge is documented by sedimentary clinoforms that have deposited in a morphological reentrant, and have migrated upslope testifying of a local subsidence meanwhile the adjacent La Plata Island area underwent uplift. In the Esmeraldas canyon area, a local uplift of the shelf is documented. (3) Two neotectonic fault systems with a possible transcurrent component are imaged across the shelf edge and upper margin slope offshore Jama, and Cape Galera. This possible transcurrent motion could be related to the reactivation of ancient faults of the upper plate by the subduction. These preliminary results indicate that the ATACAMES data set has a strong potential to evaluate the spatial and temporal contribution of tectonic and climate changes on the structural development and stratigraphic evolution of the Ecuador continental margin. 25. Improving the management of diabetes in hospitalized patients: the results of a computer-based house staff training program.

Background: Poorly controlled diabetes in hospitalized patients is associated with poor clinical outcomes. We hypothesized that computer-based diabetes training could improve house staff knowledge and comfort for the management of diabetes in a large tertiary-care hospital.Methods: We implemented a computer-based training program on inpatient diabetes for internal medicine house staff at the Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston, MA) in September 2009. House staff were required to complete the program and answer a set of questions, before and after the program, to evaluate their level of comfort and knowledge of inpatient diabetes. Chart reviews of all non-critically ill patients with diabetes managed by house staff in August 2009 (before the program) and December 2009 (after the program) were performed. Chart reviews were also performed for August 2008 and December 2008 to compare house staff management practices when the computer-based educational program was not available.Results: A significant increase in comfort levels and knowledge in the management of inpatient diabetes was seen among house staff at all levels of training (P<0.02), but the increase was smaller for senior house staff compared with junior house staff. Nonsignificant trends suggesting increased use of basal-bolus insulin (P=0.06) and decreased use of sliding-scale insulin (P=0.10) were seen following the educational intervention in 2009, whereas no such change was seen in 2008 (P>0.90). Overall, house staff evaluated the training program as "very relevant" and the technology interface as "good."Conclusions: A computer-based diabetes training program can improve the comfort and knowledge of house staff and potentially improve their insulin administration practices at large academic centers. Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the early clinical outcome of reconstruction with modular hemipelvic prostheses after pelvic sarcoma resection.Methods: We retrospectively reviewed eight patients between 2004 and 2007 who had periacetabular resections and reconstruction with a modular hemipelvic prosthetic system for pelvic sarcoma with a mean follow-up of 27 (range,10~54) months. Oncology outcome was assessed with survival rate, local recurrence rate, International Society of Limb Salvage (ISOLS) score and complications. Two patients had types I and II (periacetabular and ilium) pelvic resections, three had types II and III (periacetabular and pubis) pelvic resections and three had type I , II and III (ilium, periacetabular and pubis) pelvic resections. Nobody received chemotherapy or radiotherapy.Results: Five patients were free of disease; three patients died of disease. The overall survival rate was 62.5%. None had local recurrence, and 37.5% had metastasis. The mean ISOLS score was 19.5. No one had deep infection or dislocation.Conclusions: Reconstruction with a modular hemipelvic prosthetic system after periacetabular resection is a promising method because of the acceptable complication rate and satisfactory functional outcome. In this paper, a Si3N4/ZrO2 split charge trapping layer (SCTL) is proposed for multibit-cell Flash memory. T complementary potential wells of Si3N4/ZrO2 storage nodes en able independent node control when the Fowler-Nordheim (F-N) method is applied for programming/erasing (P/E). Experiment and simulation results suggest that the 2-bit (2-b) charge storage is accomplished by physical data node separation for the SCTL rather than charge injection control. The well-confined charge storages suppress the second-bit effect, enabling excellent 2-b data clearance for short-channel SCTL devices. Background and Objectives A novel kind of non-viral gene delivery vector based on transferrin (Tf) as the core component was constructed with high transfection efficiency and low toxicity. Materials and Methods The synthesis vector of Tf-PEI600 was confirmed by different physicochemical methods, including 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, gel permeation chromatography, X-ray and thermogravimetric analysis. The cytotoxicity and gene delivery efficiency of the synthesized vector were verified by in vitro experiments. Results The agarose gel electrophoresis assay indicated that the novel copolymer Tf-PEI600 could efficiently condense plasmid DNA and the condensed nanoparticles exhibited a spherical shape. As the weight ratio of Tf-PEI600 to DNA reached 15·0, the particle size (about 200 nm) and the zeta potential (about 20 mV) of the nanoparticles became optimal for gene delivery. The methylthiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay showed the cytotoxicity of Tf-PEI600 to be similar to that of PEI600 and much lower than that of PEI25kDa. In gene-delivery experiments with COS-7 cells and HepG2 cells, the Tf-PEI600 showed about a 30- to 53-fold higher efficiency than PEI600 and nearly equal to that of PEI25kDa. Conclusions These data suggest that Tf-PEI600, with the advantages of low toxicity and high gene-delivery efficiency, might have great prospects in the practice of gene delivery. Polyethylenimine (PEI) is the polymer most commonly used for transferring plasmids into eukaryotes, but its gene-transfer efficiency is lower compared to viral vectors. Receptors targeting PEI combined with ligands can enhance efficiency of gene transfer into the corresponding receptor-positive cells. Using the double-receptor-mediated pathway of viral infection, in this study we synthesized a novel non-viral vector based on PEI combined with two peptides recognizing FGF receptors (peptide YC25) and integrins (peptide CP9) on the cell surface. The dual targeting vector showed a physicochemical character similar to that of PEI, such as pDNA formation, particle size, zeta potential and lower toxicity. In vitro gene transfer showed that the dual-receptor targeted vector (YC25-PEI-CP9) exhibited a markedly higher transgene efficiency in cell lines with positive expression of FGF receptors and integrins, compared with single-peptide-modified PEI or unmodified PEI. In the cells with only integrin-positive expression, YC25-PEI-CP9 mediated a higher transgene expression than PEI but lower than CP9-PEI. The corresponding free peptides could inhibit the transgene efficiency of the peptide-coupled PEI. In vivo gene transfer in tumor-bearing nude mice also demonstrated that the dual-targeting vectors showed a significantly enhanced transfection efficiency in tumors with positive expression of FGF receptors and integrins. 'Baishouwu' is an appellative name of dried root tubers from three Asclepiadaceae plants: Cynanchum auriculatum Royle ex Wight, Cynanchum bungei Decne and Cynoctonum wilfordii Maxim. In order to establish the pharmacological basis for the ethnomedicinal use of Baishouwu in gastric disorders, this study examined the effects of ethanol extracts and fractions from root tubers of Cynanchum auriculatum, Cynanchum bungei and Cynoctonum wilfordii on ethanol-, indomethacin-induced gastric lesions and histamine-induced gastric acid secretion in rats. Plant materials were collected from various areas of China. Oral administration of ethanol extract and chloroform fraction of Cynoctonum wilfordii collected from Changbai Cordillera at doses of 150 and 68mg/kg, respectively, significantly inhibited the development of ethanol- and indomethacin-induced gastric lesions and also caused significant decrease of gastric acid secretion after histamine-induced gastric lesion. Oral administrations of ethanol extract and chloroform fraction of Cynanchum auriculatum collected from Binhai at the doses of 300 and 69mg/kg, respectively, significantly inhibited ethanol- and indomethacin-induced gastric lesions. An integrated stratigraphic study was conducted on the shallow water carbonate platforms of the Guadeloupe archipelago to refine the tectonic evolution of the Lesser Antilles forearc. The carbonate platforms are now dated to the Zanclean–Calabrian interval, and their demise occurred between 1.5 and 1.07 Ma. The precise chronostratigraphy allows dating of the main extensional tectonic events since the late Miocene. An initial episode occurred during the late Miocene, related to the reactivation of inherited N130°E-trending shear zones, and led to the emergence of most parts of the forearc. Subsequently, Zanclean to early Piacenzian carbonate platforms developed in association with a general subsidence of the forearc. During the late Piacenzan, a second extensional episode occurred. At this time La Désirade underwent major uplift and emergence whereas most of the forearc remained submerged. Prior to 1.07 Ma, a third north–south extensional episode occurred and led to the final demise of the carbonate platforms. Thus the forearc was characterized by general subsidence since the early Pliocene interrupted by three main extensional episodes and related differential uplifts. This suggests that the Lesser Antilles subduction is probably erosive north of latitude 15°N since c. 5 Ma, related to aseismic ridge subduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photoluminescence, absorption, and photocurrent measurements were made for a hybrid system of 1-thioglycerol-capped HgTe nanoparticles synthesized by colloidal method to investigate the photocurrent mechanism in this hybrid system. Absorption and photoluminescence spectra taken for the capped HgTe nanoparticles reveal strong exciton peaks in the near-infrared wavelength range. The wavelength dependence of the photocurrent for these capped nanoparticles is very close to that of the absorption spectrum. For the photocurrent mechanism of the hybrid system, on the basis of our experimental results and energy diagram for the 1-thioglycerol-capped HgTe nanoparticles, it is suggested in this letter that holes among electron-hole pairs created by incident photons in the HgTe nanoparticles are transferred to capping 1-thioglycerol while electrons are strongly confined in these nanoparticles and that the holes contribute to the photocurrent flowing in the medium of 1-thioglycerol. © 2003 American Institute of Physics.
