Abstract Introduction In recent years, insulin eye drops have attracted increasing attention from researchers and ophthalmologists. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and possible mechanism of action of insulin eye drops in diabetic mice with corneal wounds. Methods A type 1 diabetes model was induced, and a corneal epithelial injury model of 2.5 mm was established. We used corneal fluorescein staining, hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) staining and the Cochet-Bonnet esthesiometer to examine the process of wound healing. Subsequently, the expression levels of Ki-67, IL-1β, β3-tubulin and neuropeptides, including substance P (SP) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), were examined at 72 h after corneal injury. Results Fluorescein staining demonstrated an acceleration of the recovery of corneal epithelial injury in diabetic mice compared with the saline treatment, which was further evidenced by the overexpression of Ki-67. Moreover, 72 h of insulin application attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokines and neutrophil infiltration. Remarkably, the results demonstrated that topical insulin treatment enhanced the density of corneal epithelial nerves, as well as neuropeptide SP and CGRP release, in the healing cornea via immunofluorescence staining. Conclusions Our results indicated that insulin eye drops may accelerate corneal wound healing and decrease inflammatory responses in diabetic mice by promoting nerve regeneration and increasing levels of neuropeptides SP and CGRP.

Abstract Background Antiviral intervention in hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected pregnant women can effectively reduce mother-to-child transmission. However, the immunological characteristics of pregnant women with chronic HBV infection and the effects of antiviral intervention during pregnancy on maternal immune response remain unknown. We aimed to investigate these effects by comparing mothers who received antiviral intervention during pregnancy with those who did not. Purpose To report a systematic review and meta-analysis of the association between dry eye disease (DED) and dyslipidaemia.Methods PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were systematically searched from January 2000 to December 2021. We included observational studies to assess the correlation of DED with meibomian gland dysfunction and dyslipidaemia without any language restrictions. The pooled OR with 95% CI was calculated in Stata V.15.Results Of 6727 identified studies, 18 studies (21 databases) with a total of 2 663 126 patients were analysed in our meta-analysis. Abstract Background Postpartum alanine transaminase (ALT) flares occur frequently in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV)-infected mothers with antepartum antiviral therapy (AVT). We aimed to characterize the T cell immunity in HBV-infected mothers experiencing postpartum ALT flares. Methods Twenty HBV-infected pregnant women who received AVT at 26–28 weeks of gestation were enrolled and followed up until 15–18 weeks postpartum. Among the 20 HBV-infected pregnant women, 6 experienced postpartum ALT flare (AF mothers), while 14 did not (NAF mothers). T lymphocyte phenotypes and functions were analyzed using flow cytometry. Results Compared to NAF mothers, the quantitative HBsAg levels in AF mothers decreased significantly at 6–8 or 15–18 weeks postpartum. Significant differences in HBeAg levels between these groups were only found at delivery. Regulatory T cell (Treg) numbers in AF mothers were lower than those of NAF mothers before AVT; however, there were no significant differences in Treg numbers at other follow-up points. Expression of other T cell phenotypes were similar between the two groups. T cells in AF mothers produced more pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-21, TNF-α, IL-2) or less anti-inflammatory cytokine (IL-10) than those in NAF mothers before, during, or after antiviral treatment. The ratio of IFN-γ to IL-10 producing by CD4+ T cells or CD8+ T cells was higher in AF mothers than that in NAF mothers during pregnancy or after delivery. Conclusions The characteristics of T cell immunity was distinct between mothers with postpartum ALT flare and those without ALT flare from pregnancy to postpartum, which indicated that T cell immunity might get involved in postpartum ALT flare.

PurposeTo investigate the indirect effects of intense pulsed light (IPL) on morphological and pathological changes of the meibomian glands (MGs) in apolipoprotein E knockout (ApoE–/–) mice and explore the underlying mechanisms.MethodsApoE–/– mice were treated with or without IPL three times below the lower eyelids and MGs were not directly exposed to irradiation. The eyelids and ocular surface were observed under a stereoscope. The morphology of MGs was examined by photographing and hematoxylin and eosin staining. Lipid droplets in MGs were examined by Oil Red O staining. The ultrastructure of meibocytes and mitochondria was observed under transmission electron microscopy. The relative gene and protein expression in MGs of upper eyelids was determined by immunostaining, Western blot, and qRT–PCR.ResultsThree IPL treatments decreased the toothpaste-like plugging of orifices and thickening and irregularity of the upper and lower eyelid margins in ApoE–/– mice. The morphology of some MGs improved after IPL treatments, accompanied by increased proliferation of acinar basal cells and decreased ductal keratinization. Furthermore, the accumulation of hyperchromatic lipid droplets in the acini increased, and the lipid droplets distributed in the cells around the acini were round and small. Compared with untreated ApoE–/– mice, oxidative stress and apoptosis were downregulated by IPL treatment, accompanied by the improvements in mitochondrial structure. Further research showed that IPL treatments reduced the levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-17A, IL-6 in MGs and inactivated nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κ B).ConclusionCollectively, the results demonstrate that indirect effects of IPL can improve the structure and function of MGs and mitigate the progression of MGD, which may be related to the indirect effects of photobiomodulation.

Reusing spent anodes is a pivotal step for recycling lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it proves challenging to completely eliminate Cu impurities from spent graphite (SG), which hinders the effective recycling of spent anodes. In this paper, a straightforward air oxidation method is proposed to directly upgrade spent anodes into stable CuO/C anodes by harnessing the inherent Cu impurities in spent anodes. The air oxidation process not only repairs the SG to some extent but also generates uniformly dispersed CuO nanoparticles, which chemically bind with the repaired graphite (RG) through Cu–O–C bonds. The specific discharge capacity of the CuO/RG anode can reach as high as 647 mA h g−1 even after 500 cycles (at 372 mA g−1 ). In addition, this program is found to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by ∼80% compared to previously reported CuO/C production programs. Clearly, this approach provides a new direction for large-scale recycling of spent LIBs and low-cost production of high-performance CuO/C anodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
