Abstract Ultrafast excitation of matter can violate Curie’s principle that the symmetry of the cause must be found in the symmetry of the effect. For instance, heating alone cannot result in a deterministic reversal of magnetization. However, if the heating is ultrafast, it facilitates toggle switching of magnetization between stable bit-states without any magnetic field. Here we show that the regime of ultrafast toggle switching can be also realized via a mechanism without relying on heat. Ultrafast laser excitation of iron-garnet with linearly polarized light modifies magnetic anisotropy and thus causes toggling magnetization between two stable bit states. This new regime of ‘cold’ toggle switching can be observed in ferrimagnets without a compensation point and over an exceptionally broad temperature range. The control of magnetic anisotropy required for the toggle switching exhibits reduced dissipation compared to laser-induced-heating mechanism, however the dissipation and the switching-time are shown to be competing parameters.

An ellipsometric configuration for measurement of the complex transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect is described that uses a photoelastic modulator (PEM). The real and imaginary parts of the complex transverse Kerr effect are represented as small perturbations of ellipsometric angles ψ and ∆. The measurement, based on null ellipsometry and zone averaging, gives high signal typical for modulation techniques and insensitivity to other magnetisation components and system imperfections. The method is demonstrated by the measurement of transverse component during magnetisation reversal in a thin cobalt film.

Abstract Background Ageing is a complex phenomenon that leads to decreased proliferative activity, loss of function of the cells, and cellular senescence. Senescence of the immune system exacerbates individual’s immune response, both humoral and cellular but increases the frequency of infections. We hypothesized that physiological ageing of adaptive immune system occurs in recipients of allogeneic hematopoietic cells transplant (allo-HCT) at faster rate when compared to their respective donors since the small number of donor cells undergo immense proliferative stress restoring recipients hematopoiesis. We compared molecular characterizations of ageing between recipients and donors of allo-HCT: telomeric length and immunophenotypic changes in main lymphocyte subsets – CD4+, CD8+, CD19+, CD56+. Results Median telomeric length (TL) of CD8+ lymphocytes was significantly longer in donors compared to recipients (on average 2,1 kb and 1,7 kb respectively, p = 0,02). Similar trends were observed for CD4+ and CD19+ although the results did not reach statistical significance. We have also found trends in the immunophenotype between recipients and donors in the subpopulations of CD4+ (naïve and effector memory), CD8+ Eomes+ and B-lymphocytes (B1 and B2). Lower infection risk recipients had also a significantly greater percentage of NK cells (22,3%) than high-risk patients (9,3%) p = 0,04. Conclusion Our data do not support the initial hypothesis of accelerated aging in the long term all-HCT recipients with the exception of the recipients lymphocytes (mainly CD8+) which present some molecular features, characteristic for physiological ageing (telomeric shortening, immunophenotype) when compared to their respective donors. However, a history of lower infection numbers in HCT recipients seems to be associated with increased percentage of NK cells. The history of GVHD seems not to affect the rate of ageing. Therefore, it is safe to conclude that the observed subtle differences between recipients’ and donors’ cells result mainly from the proliferative stress in the early period after allo-HCT and the difference between hosts’ and recipients’ microenvironments.

Abstract The magnetic properties of NiO/Co/Pt as a function of Co layer thickness were investigated by polar magneto-optical Kerr effect (PMOKE) (magnetometry and microscopy) and Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) spectroscopy. PMOKE measurements revealed strong surface anisotropy (1.8 mJ/m2) favoring perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and asymmetric domain wall propagation explained by anticlockwise chirality. BLS measurements show that this chirality is induced by strong interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction (+ 2.0 pJ/m). This is one of the highest values reported so far for Co layers surrounded by different layers. The observed chirality is opposite to what has been found in Co/oxide interfaces. These results and data published earlier, indicate that the strength of interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction increases with the amount of stoichiometric NiO. Therefore, this work shows that NiO is the source of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction.

Abstract Recent results showed that the ferrimagnetic compensation point and other characteristic features of Tb/Co ferrimagnetic multilayers can be tailored by He+ ion bombardment. With appropriate choices of the He+ ion dose, we prepared two types of lattices composed of squares with either Tb or Co domination. The magnetization reversal of the first lattice is similar to that seen in ferromagnetic heterostructures consisting of areas with different switching fields. However, in the second lattice, the creation of domains without accompanying domain walls is possible. These domain patterns are particularly stable because they simultaneously lower the demagnetizing energy and the energy associated with the presence of domain walls (exchange and anisotropy). For both lattices, studies of magnetization reversal show that this process takes place by the propagation of the domain walls. If they are not present at the onset, the reversal starts from the nucleation of reversed domains and it is followed by domain wall propagation. The magnetization reversal process does not depend significantly on the relative sign of the effective magnetization in areas separated by domain walls.

Magnetic multilayers of (Ir/Co/Pt)6 with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (IDMI) were deposited by magnetron sputtering with Co thickness d=1.8 nm. Exploiting magneto-optical Kerr effect in longitudinal mode microscopy, magnetic force microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry, the magnetic field-driven evolution of domain structures and magnetization hysteresis loops have been studied. The existence of weak stripe domains structure was deduced – tens micrometers size domains with in-plane “core” magnetization modulated by hundred of nanometers domains with out-of-plane magnetization. Micromagnetic simulations interpreted such magnetization distribution. Quantitative evaluation of IDMI was carried out using Brillouin light scattering (BLS) spectroscopy as the difference between Stokes and anti-Stokes peak frequencies Δf. Due to the additive nature of IDMI, the asymmetric combination of Ir and Pt covers led to large values of effective IDMI energy density Deff. It was found that Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies as well as Δf, measured as a function of in-plane applied magnetic field, show hysteresis. These results are explained under the consideration of the influence of IDMI on the dynamics of the in-plane magnetized “core” with weak stripe domains.

It has been hypothesized that α-Klotho deficiency might contribute to chronic inflammation in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), especially those on hemodialysis (HD). Serum Klotho levels by some authors are considered a potential predictor of cerebrovascular events. Therefore, we analyzed serum levels of α-Klotho with ELISA and inflammation-related cytokines in HD patients. Sixty-seven HD patients and 19 healthy people were recruited between November 2017 and June 2021. A Cytometric Bead Array (CBA) was used to determine the level of different cytokines: IL-12p70, TNF, IL-10, IL-6, IL-1β, and IL-8. A human Klotho ELISA kit was used to determine the level of α-Klotho in the plasma samples of HD patients. There was no difference in serum levels of α-Klotho between HD patients and healthy people. Patients had increased serum IL-6 and IL-8. Significant positive correlations existed between the concentration of α-Klotho and the serum concentrations of IL-12p70, IL-10, and IL-1β. However, in a multivariable linear regression analysis, only patients’ age was associated independently with α-Klotho level. Serum α-Klotho was not associated with higher mortality risk in HD patients. While these results draw attention to potential relationships between α-Klotho proteins and inflammatory markers in HD patients, our cross-sectional study could not confirm the pathogenic link between α-Klotho, inflammation, and cardiovascular mortality.

Abstract The application of spin waves in communication with information encoded in amplitude and phase could replace or enhance existing microelectronic and microwave devices with significantly decreased energy consumption. Spin waves (SW) are usually transported in a magnetic material shaped to act as a waveguide. However, the implementation of SW transport and switching in plane homogeneous magnetic films and running as a narrow beam with a small divergence angle still present a challenge. We propose a realization of a strong SW switchers based on a patterned yttrium iron garnet (YIG) film that could serve as a magnonic fundamental building block. Our concept relies on the creation of a narrow beam of relatively short-wavelength SW by effect of a total non-reflection, found to be tied to refraction on the decreasing internal magnetic field, near a line of antidots at YIG. Nonreciprocal SW excitation by a microstrip antenna is used for controlling the direction of the signal flow. We demonstrate unique features of the propagation of microwave-excited SW beams, provide insight into their physics and discuss their potential applications in high-frequency devices.

The X /Co 3 nm/ Y (where X , Y = Au, Pt) trilayers with as deposited in-plane magnetization alignment were irradiated with 30 keV Ga ^+ ions in the wide range of ion fluence. The samples were investigated by means of complementary techniques: magneto-optical magnetometry and spectroscopy (in the photon energy range from 1.2 eV to 4.5 eV), magnetic force microscopy, positron annihilation spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction and reflectivity. Difference in miscibility of interface atoms is clearly manifested in various intermixing extent at Co/Pt and Co/Au interfaces and consequently in magnetic properties of the irradiated trilayers. Low irradiation fluence (∼10 ^14 ions cm ^−2 ) leads to ∼1 nm interfaces broadening without visible surface etching for all samples, which is related with a distinct drop of magnetic anisotropy. However, the high irradiation fluence (∼5 × 10 ^15 ions cm ^−2 ) results in enhanced interface broadening and significant surface etching (∼5 nm) partially removing also Co atoms. Tensile strains (up to 0.5%) were developed in the cover layers. The tensile strain, layers intermixing and the creation of Co–Pt(Au) alloys with different composition formed by irradiation are correlated with the increase of magnetic anisotropy. Moreover it was observed that substitution of Au instead of Pt (as a cap or buffer layer) results in substantial increase of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Maximal increase of magnetooptical parameters was observed for Pt/Co/Pt layer. Irradiation induced changes of concentration profiles are revealed using magnetooptical spectra, x-ray reflectivity spectra and simulations with use of binary collision approximation.
