Let $\Sigma$ be a Riemannian manifold with strictly convex spherical boundary. Assuming absence of conjugate points and that the trapped set is hyperbolic, we show that $\Sigma$ can be isometrically embedded into a closed Riemannian manifold with Anosov geodesic flow. We use this embedding to provide a direct link between the classical Livshits theorem for Anosov flows and the Livshits theorem for the X-ray transform which appears in the boundary rigidity program. Given an oriented surface bounding a handlebody, we study the subgroup of its mapping class group defined as the intersection of the handlebody group and the second term of the Johnson filtration: $\mathcal{A} \cap J_2$. We introduce two trace-like operators, inspired by Morita's trace, and show that their kernels coincide with the images by the second Johnson homomorphism $\tau_2$ of $J_2$ and $\mathcal{A} \cap J_2$, respectively. In particular, we answer by the negative to a question asked by Levine about an algebraic description of $\tau_2(\mathcal{A} \cap J_2)$. By the same techniques, and for a Heegaard surface in $S^3$, we also compute the image by $\tau_2$ of the intersection of the Goeritz group $\mathcal{G}$ with $J_2$., Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures. Using the Seiberg-Witten monopole equations, Baraglia recently proved that for most of simply-connected closed smooth $4$-manifolds $X$, the inclusions $\mathrm{Diff}(X) \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Homeo}(X)$ are not weak homotopy equivalences. In this paper, we generalize Baraglia's result using the $\mathrm{Pin}^{-}(2)$-monopole equations instead. We also give new examples of $4$-manifolds $X$ for which $\pi_{0}(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to \pi_{0}(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$ are not surjections., Comment: 14 pages

Quantization of the Teichm\"uller space of a punctured Riemann surface $S$ is an approach to $3$-dimensional quantum gravity, and is a prototypical example of quantization of cluster varieties. Any simple loop $\gamma$ in $S$ gives rise to a natural trace-of-monodromy function $\mathbb{I}(\gamma)$ on the Teichm\"uller space. For any ideal triangulation $\Delta$ of $S$, this function $\mathbb{I}(\gamma)$ is a Laurent polynomial in the square-roots of the exponentiated shear coordinates for the arcs of $\Delta$. An important problem was to construct a quantization of this function $\mathbb{I}(\gamma)$, namely to replace it by a noncommutative Laurent polynomial in the quantum variables. This problem, which is closely related to the framed protected spin characters in physics, has been solved by Allegretti and Kim using Bonahon and Wong's ${\rm SL}_2$ quantum trace for skein algebras, and by Gabella using Gaiotto, Moore and Neitzke's Seiberg-Witten curves, spectral networks, and writhe of links. We show that these two solutions to the quantization problem coincide. For a Legendrian link $\Lambda \subset J^1M$ with $M = \mathbb{R}$ or $S^1$, immersed exact Lagrangian fillings $L \subset \mbox{Symp}(J^1M) \cong T^*(\mathbb{R}_{>0} \times M)$ of $\Lambda$ can be lifted to conical Legendrian fillings $\Sigma \subset J^1(\mathbb{R}_{>0} \times M)$ of $\Lambda$. When $\Sigma$ is embedded, using the version of functoriality for Legendrian contact homology (LCH) from [30], for each augmentation $\alpha: \mathcal{A}(\Sigma) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}/2$ of the LCH algebra of $\Sigma$, there is an induced augmentation $\epsilon_{(\Sigma,\alpha)}: \mathcal{A}(\Lambda) \rightarrow \mathbb{Z}/2$. With $\Sigma$ fixed, the set of homotopy classes of all such induced augmentations, $I_\Sigma \subset \mathit{Aug}(\Lambda)/{\sim}$, is a Legendrian isotopy invariant of $\Sigma$. We establish methods to compute $I_\Sigma$ based on the correspondence between Morse complex families and augmentations. This includes developing a functoriality for the cellular DGA from [31] with respect to Legendrian cobordisms, and proving its equivalence to the functoriality for LCH. For arbitrary $n \geq 1$, we give examples of Legendrian torus knots with $2n$ distinct conical Legendrian fillings distinguished by their induced augmentation sets. We prove that when $\rho \neq 1$ and $\Lambda \subset J^1\mathbb{R}$ every $\rho$-graded augmentation of $\Lambda$ can be induced in this manner by an immersed Lagrangian filling. The main goal of this article is to connect some recent perspectives in the study of 4 4 -manifolds from the vantage point of singularity theory. We present explicit algorithms for simplifying the topology of various maps on 4 4 -manifolds, which include broken Lefschetz fibrations and indefinite Morse 2 2 -functions. The algorithms consist of sequences of moves, which modify indefinite fibrations in smooth 1 1 -parameter families. These algorithms allow us to give purely topological and constructive proofs of the existence of simplified broken Lefschetz fibrations and Morse 2 2 -functions on general 4 4 -manifolds, and a theorem of Auroux–Donaldson–Katzarkov on the existence of certain broken Lefschetz pencils on near-symplectic 4 4 -manifolds. We moreover establish a correspondence between broken Lefschetz fibrations and Gay–Kirby trisections of 4 4 -manifolds, and show the existence and stable uniqueness of simplified trisections on all 4 4 -manifolds. Building on this correspondence, we also provide several new constructions of trisections, including infinite families of genus- 3 3 trisections with homotopy inequivalent total spaces, and exotic same genera trisections of 4 4 -manifolds in the homeomorphism classes of complex rational surfaces.

We study the asymptotic behavior of the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant associated with the square of the $n$-th root of unity with odd $n$ for a Seifert fibered space obtained by an integral Dehn surgery along a torus knot. We show that it can be described as a sum of the Chern-Simons invariants and the twisted Reidemeister torsions both associated with representations of the fundamental group to the two-dimensional complex special linear group., 69 pages, 13 figures

We study Legendrian and transverse realizations of the negative torus knots $T_{(p,-q)}$ in all contact structures on the $3$-sphere. We give a complete classification of the strongly non-loose transverse realizations and the strongly non-loose Legendrian realizations with the Thurston-Bennequin invariant smaller than $-pq$. Additionally, we show that the strongly non-loose transverse realizations $T$ are classified by their non-zero invariants $\mathfrak T(T)$ in the minus version of the knot Floer homology. However, not all the elements of $HFK^-(T_{(p,q)})$ can be realized. Along the way, we relate our Legendrian realizations to the tight contact structures on the Legendrian surgeries along them. Specifically, we realize all tight structures on the lens spaces $L(pq+1,p^2)$ as a single Legendrian surgery on a Legendrian $T_{(p,-q)}$, and we relate transverse realizations in overtwisted structures to the non-fillable tight structures on the large negative surgeries along the underlying knots., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures. In Carqueville et al., arXiv:1809.01483, the notion of an orbifold datum $\mathbb{A}$ in a modular fusion category $\mathcal{C}$ was introduced as part of a generalised orbifold construction for Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFTs. In this paper, given a simple orbifold datum $\mathbb{A}$ in $\mathcal{C}$, we introduce a ribbon category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{A}}$ and show that it is again a modular fusion category. The definition of $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{A}}$ is motivated by properties of Wilson lines in the generalised orbifold. We analyse two examples in detail: (i) when $\mathbb{A}$ is given by a simple commutative $\Delta$-separable Frobenius algebra $A$ in $\mathcal{C}$; (ii) when $\mathbb{A}$ is an orbifold datum in $\mathcal{C} = \operatorname{Vect}$, built from a spherical fusion category $\mathcal{S}$. We show that in case (i), $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{A}}$ is ribbon-equivalent to the category of local modules of $A$, and in case (ii), to the Drinfeld centre of $\mathcal{S}$. The category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{A}}$ thus unifies these two constructions into a single algebraic setting., Comment: 58 pages

The Blanchet link homology theory is an oriented model of Khovanov homology, functorial over the integers with respect to link cobordisms. We formulate a stable homotopy refinement of the Blanchet theory, based on a comparison of the Blanchet and Khovanov chain complexes associated to link diagrams. The construction of the stable homotopy type relies on the signed Burnside category approach of Sarkar-Scaduto-Stoffregen.

We consider a complete Riemannian manifold, which consists of a compact interior and one or more $\varphi$-cusps: infinitely long ends of a type that includes cylindrical ends and hyperbolic cusps. Here $\varphi$ is a function of the radial coordinate that describes the shape of such an end. Given an action by a compact Lie group on such a manifold, we obtain an equivariant index theorem for Dirac operators, under conditions on $\varphi$. These conditions hold in the cases of cylindrical ends and hyperbolic cusps. In the case of cylindrical ends, the cusp contribution equals the delocalised $\eta$-invariant, and the index theorem reduces to Donnelly's equivariant index theory on compact manifolds with boundary. We develop techniques that lay out a basis for generalizations of the famous Thurston's Topological Characterization of Rational Functions for an infinite set of marked points and branched coverings of infinite degree. Analogously to the classical theorem we consider the Thurston's $\sigma$-map acting on a Teichm\"uller space which is this time infinite-dimensional -- and this leads to a completely different theory comparing to the classical setting. We show that a hyperbolic $3$-manifold can be the cyclic branched cover of at most fifteen knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$. This is a consequence of a general result about finite groups of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms acting on $3$-manifolds. A similar, although weaker, result holds for arbitrary irreducible $3$-manifolds: an irreducible $3$-manifold can be the cyclic branched cover of odd prime order of at most six knots in $\mathbf{S}^3$., 31 pages, 1 figure. We explore the limit set of a particular spherical CR uniformization of a cusped hyperbolic manifold. We prove that the limit set is the closure of a countable union of $\mathbb{R}$-circles, is connected, and contains a Hopf link with three components; we also show that the fundamental group of its complement in $S^3$ is not finitely generated. We study Kauffman's model of folded ribbon knots: knots made of a thin strip of paper folded flat in the plane. The folded ribbonlength is the length to width ratio of such a ribbon knot. We give upper bounds on the folded ribbonlength of 2-bridge, $(2,q)$ torus, twist, and pretzel knots, and these upper bounds turn out to be linear in the crossing number. We give a new way to fold $(p,q)$ torus knots and show that their folded ribbonlength is bounded above by $2p$. This means, for example, that the trefoil knot can be constructed with a folded ribbonlength of 6. We then show that any $(p,q)$ torus knot $K$ with $p\geq q>2$ has a constant $c>0$, such that the folded ribbonlength is bounded above by $c\cdot Cr(K)^{1/2}$. This provides an example of an upper bound on folded ribbonlength that is sub-linear in crossing number., 33 pages, 26 figures. We consider symplectic fibrations as in Guillemin-Lerman-Sternberg, and derive a spectral sequence to compute the Floer cohomology of certain fibered Lagrangians sitting inside a compact symplectic fibration with small monotone fibers and a rational base. We show if the Floer cohomology with field coefficients of the fiber Lagrangian vanishes, then the Floer cohomology with field coefficients of the total Lagrangian also vanishes. We introduce the notion of coupled link cube complex (CLCC) as a means of constructing interesting cocompactly cubulated groups. CLCCs are defined locally, making them a useful tool when precise control over the links is required. In this paper we study some general properties of CLCCs, such as their (co)homological dimension and criteria for hyperbolicity. Some examples of fundamental groups of CLCCs are RAAGs, RACGs, surface groups and some manifold groups. This is the sequel to the author's previous paper which gives an extension of Taubes' "SW=Gr" theorem to non-symplectic 4-manifolds. The main result of this paper asserts the following. Whenever the Seiberg-Witten invariants are defined over a closed minimal 4-manifold X, they are equivalent modulo 2 to "near-symplectic" Gromov invariants in the presence of certain self-dual harmonic 2-forms on X. A version for non-minimal 4-manifolds is also proved. A knot in $S^3$ is rationally slice if it bounds a disk in a rational homology ball. We give an infinite family of rationally slice knots that are linearly independent in the knot concordance group. We give complete geometric invariants of cobordisms of framed fold maps. These invariants consist of two types. We take the immersion of the fold singular set into the target manifold together with information about non-triviality of the normal bundle of the singular set in the source manifold. These invariants were introduced in the author's earlier works. Secondly we take the induced stable partial framing on the source manifold whose cobordisms were studied in general by Koschorke. We show that these invariants describe completely the cobordism groups of framed fold maps into R^n. Then we are looking for dependencies between these invariants and we study fold maps of 4k-dimensional manifolds into R^2. We construct special fold maps which are representatives of the fold cobordism classes and we also compute cobordism groups. We obtain a Poincare-Hopf type formula, which connects local data of the singularities of a fold map of an oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M to the signature of M. Any two geometric ideal triangulations of a cusped complete hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ are related by a sequence of Pachner moves through topological triangulations. We give a bound on the length of this sequence in terms of the total number of tetrahedra and a lower bound on dihedral angles. This leads to a naive but effective algorithm to check if two hyperbolic knots are equivalent, given geometric ideal triangulations of their complements. We show two stability results for a closed Riemannian manifold whose Ricci curvature is small in the Kato sense and whose first Betti number is equal to the dimension. The first one is a geometric stability result stating that such a manifold is Gromov-Hausdorff close to a flat torus. The second one states that, under a stronger assumption, such a manifold is diffeomorphic to a torus: this extends a result by Colding and Cheeger-Colding obtained in the context of a lower bound on the Ricci curvature., 24 pages. Extending ideas of Hedden-Ni, we show that the module structure on Khovanov homology detects split links. We also prove an analogue for untwisted Heegaard Floer homology of the branched double cover. Technical results proved along the way include two interpretations of the module structure on untwisted Heegaard Floer homology in terms of twisted Heegaard Floer homology and the fact that the module structure on the reduced Khovanov complex of a link is well-defined up to quasi-isomorphism., Comment: 31 pages

Continuing our previous work, we effectively compute connected Heegaard Floer homologies of two families of Brieskorn spheres realized as the boundaries of almost simple linear graphs. Using Floer theoretic invariants of Dai, Hom, Stoffregen, and Truong, we show that these Brieskorn spheres also generate infinite rank summands in the homology cobordism group. Our computations also have applications to the concordance of classical knots and $0$-concordance of $2$-knots., 29 pages, 9 figures

This paper concerns connections between dynamical systems, knots and helicity of vector fields. For a divergence-free vector field on a closed three-manifold that generates an Anosov flow, we show that the helicity of the vector field may be recovered as the limit of appropriately weighted averages of linking numbers of periodic orbits, regarded as knots. This complements a classical result of Arnold and Vogel that, when the manifold is a real homology three-sphere, the helicity may be obtained as the limit of the normalised linking numbers of typical pairs of long trajectories. We also obtain results on the asymptotic distribution of weighted averages of null-homologous periodic orbits.

Following Boardman-Vogt, McDuff, Segal, and others, we construct a monoidal topological groupoid or space of finite subsets of the plane, and interpret the Burau representation of knot theory as a topological quantum field theory defined on it. Its determinant or {\bf writhe} is an invertible braided monoidal TQFT which group completes to define a Hopkins-Mahowald model for integral homology as an $E_2$ Thom spectrum. We use these ideas to construct an infinite cyclic (Alexander) cover for the space of finite subsets of $\C$, and we argue that the TQFT defined by Burau is closely related to the SU(2)-valued Wess-Zumino-Witten model for string theory on $\R^3_+$., Comment: Extensively revised, with an improved title, submitted. We give an explicit algorithm for calculating the Kauffman bracket of a link diagram from a Goeritz matrix for that link. Further, we show how the Jones polynomial can be recovered from a Goeritz matrix when the corresponding checkerboard surface is orientable, or when more information is known about its Gordon-Litherland form. In the process we develop a theory of Goeritz matrices for cographic matroids, which extends the bracket polynomial to any symmetric integer matrix. Using M-theory in physics, Cho, Gang, and Kim (JHEP 2020, 115 (2020) ) recently outlined a program that connects two parallel subjects of three dimensional manifolds, namely, geometric topology and quantum topology. They suggest that classical topological invariants such as Chern-Simons invariants of $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-flat connections and adjoint Reidemeister torsions of a three manifold can be packaged together to produce a $(2+1)$-topological quantum field theory, which is essentially equivalent to a modular tensor category. It is further conjectured that every modular tensor category can be obtained from a three manifold and a semi-simple Lie group. In this paper, we study this program mathematically, and provide strong support for the feasibility of such a program. The program produces an algorithm to generate the potential modular $T$-matrix and the quantum dimensions of a candidate modular data. The modular $S$-matrix follows from essentially a trial-and-error procedure. We find modular tensor categories that realize candidate modular data constructed from Seifert fibered spaces and torus bundles over the circle that reveal many subtleties in the program. We make a number of improvements to the program based on our computations. Our main result is a mathematical construction of a premodular category from each Seifert fibered space with three singular fibers and a family of torus bundles over the circle with Thurston SOL geometry. The premodular categories from Seifert fibered spaces are related to Temperley-Lieb-Jones categories and the ones from torus bundles over the circle are related to metaplectic categories. We conjecture that a resulting premodular category is modular if and only if the three manifold is a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-homology sphere and condensation of bosons in premodular categories leads to either modular or super-modular categories., Comment: To appear in Comm. Italiano-Martelli-Migliorini recently constructed hyperbolic groups which have non-hyperbolic subgroups of finite type. Using a closely related construction, Llosa Isenrich-Martelli-Py constructed hyperbolic groups with subgroups of type $F_3$ but not $F_4$. Quandle is an algebraic system with one binary operation, but it is quite different from a group. Quandle has its origin in the knot theory and good relationships with the theory of symmetric spaces, so it is well-studied from points of view of both areas. In the present paper, we investigate a special kind of quandles, called generalized Alexander quandles $Q(G,\psi)$, which is defined by a group $G$ together with its group automorphism $\psi$. We develop the quandle invariants for generalized Alexander quandles. As a result, we prove that there is a one-to-one correspondence between generalized Alexander quandles arising from symmetric groups $\Sf_n$ and the conjugacy classes of $\Sf_n$ for $3 \leq n \leq 30$ with $n \neq 6,15$, and the case $n=6$ is also discussed., Comment: 20 pages

There is a one-to-one correspondence between strong inversions on knots in the three-sphere and a special class of four-ended tangles. We compute the reduced Khovanov homology of such tangles for all strong inversions on knots with up to 9 crossings, and discuss these computations in the context of earlier work by the second author. Milnor's $\bar{\mu}$-invariants of links in the $3$-sphere $S^3$ vanish on any link concordant to a boundary link. In particular, they are trivial on any knot in $S^3$. Here we consider knots in thickened surfaces $\Sigma \times [0,1]$, where $\Sigma$ is closed and oriented. We construct new concordance invariants by adapting the Chen-Milnor theory of links in $S^3$ to an extension of the group of a virtual knot. A key ingredient is the Bar-Natan $\textit{Zh}$ map, which allows for a geometric interpretation of the group extension. The group extension itself was originally defined by Silver-Williams. Our extended $\bar{\mu}$-invariants obstruct concordance to homologically trivial knots in thickened surfaces. We use them to give new examples of non-slice virtual knots having trivial Rasmussen invariant, graded genus, affine index (or writhe) polynomial, and generalized Alexander polynomial. Furthermore, we complete the slice status classification of all virtual knots up to five classical crossings and reduce to four (out of 92800) the number of virtual knots up to six classical crossings having unknown slice status. Our main application is to Turaev's concordance group $\mathscr{VC}$ of long knots on surfaces. Boden and Nagel proved that the concordance group $\mathscr{C}$ of classical knots in $S^3$ embeds into the center of $\mathscr{VC}$. We discuss a metric description of the divergence of a (projectively) Anosov flow in dimension 3, in terms of its associated growth rates and give metric and contact geometric characterizations of when a projectively Anosov flow is Anosov. Then, we study the symmetries that the existence of an invariant volume form yields on the geometry of an Anosov flow, from various viewpoints of the theory of contact hyperbolas, Reeb dynamics and Liouville geometry, and give characterizations of when an Anosov flow is volume preserving in terms of those theories. We finally use our study to show that the bi-contact surgery operations of Salmoiraghi can be applied in an arbitrary small neighborhood of a periodic orbit of any Anosov flow. In particular, we conclude that the Goodman surgery of Anosov flows can be performed using a bi-contact surgery of Salmoiraghi., Comment: 21 pages

The submonoid of the 3-strand braid group B 3 generated by σ 1 and σ 1 σ 2 is known to yield an exotic Garside structure on B 3 . We introduce and study an infinite family ( M n ) n ≥ 1 of Garside monoids generalizing this exotic Garside structure, i.e., such that M 2 is isomorphic to the above monoid. The corresponding Garside group G ( M n ) is isomorphic to the ( n , n + 1 ) -torus knot group–which is isomorphic to B 3 for n = 2 and to the braid group of the exceptional complex reflection group G 12 for n = 3 . This yields a new Garside structure on ( n , n + 1 ) -torus knot groups, which already admit several distinct Garside structures. The ( n , n + 1 ) -torus knot group is an extension of B n + 1 , and the Garside monoid M n surjects onto the submonoid Σ n of B n + 1 generated by σ 1 , σ 1 σ 2 , … , σ 1 σ 2 ⋯ σ n , which is not a Garside monoid when n > 2 . Using a new presentation of B n + 1 that is similar to the presentation of G ( M n ) , we nevertheless check that Σ n is an Ore monoid with group of fractions isomorphic to B n + 1 , and give a conjectural presentation of it, similar to the defining presentation of M n . This partially answers a question of Dehornoy–Digne–Godelle–Krammer–Michel.

We introduce an algorithmic framework to investigate spherical and geodesic growth series of braid groups relatively to the Artin's or Birman–Ko–Lee's generators. We present our experimentations in the case of three and four strands and conjecture rational expressions for the spherical growth series with respect to the Birman–Ko–Lee's generators.

We present the first examples of elements in the fundamental group of the space of Legendrian links in the standard contact 3-sphere whose action on the Legendrian contact DGA is of infinite order. This allows us to construct the first families of Legendrian links that can be shown to admit infinitely many Lagrangian fillings by Floer-theoretic techniques. These families include the first known Legendrian links with infinitely many fillings that are not rainbow closures of positive braids, and the smallest Legendrian link with infinitely many fillings known to date. We discuss how to use our examples to construct other links with infinitely many fillings, in particular giving the first Floer-theoretic proof that Legendrian (n,m) torus links have infinitely many Lagrangian fillings, if n is greater than 3 and m greater than 6, or (n,m)=(4,4),(4,5). In addition, for any given higher genus, we construct a Weinstein 4-manifold homotopic to the 2-sphere whose wrapped Fukaya category can distinguish infinitely many exact closed Lagrangian surfaces of that genus. For a 3-manifold $M$ and an acyclic $\mathit{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representation $\rho$ of its fundamental group, the $\mathit{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-Reidemeister torsion $\tau_\rho(M) \in \mathbb{C}^\times$ is defined. If there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of irreducible representations, then the Reidemeister torsions are known to be algebraic numbers. Furthermore, we prove that the Reidemeister torsions are not only algebraic numbers but also algebraic integers for most Seifert fibered spaces and infinitely many hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Also, for a knot exterior $E(K)$, we discuss the behavior of $\tau_\rho(E(K))$ when the restriction of $\rho$ to the boundary torus is fixed., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

We seek to connect ideas in the theory of bridge trisections with other well-studied facets of classical knotted surface theory. First, we show how the normal Euler number can be computed from a tri-plane diagram, and we use this to give a trisection-theoretic proof of the Whitney-Massey Theorem, which bounds the possible values of this number in terms of the Euler characteristic. Second, we describe in detail how to compute the fundamental group and related invariants from a tri-plane diagram, and we use this, together with an analysis of bridge trisections of ribbon surfaces, to produce an infinite family of knotted spheres that admit non-isotopic bridge trisections of minimal complexity., v1 has been divided into two papers: the present article and "Bridge trisections and Seifert solids," which will be posted simultaneously; 29 pages, 11 figures
