Abstract Background The formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) by atmospheric oxidation reactions substantially contributes to the burden of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which has been associated with adverse health effects (e.g., cardiovascular diseases). However, the molecular and cellular effects of atmospheric aging on aerosol toxicity have not been fully elucidated, especially in model systems that enable cell-to-cell signaling. Methods In this study, we aimed to elucidate the complexity of atmospheric aerosol toxicology by exposing a coculture model system consisting of an alveolar (A549) and an endothelial (EA.hy926) cell line seeded in a 3D orientation at the air‒liquid interface for 4 h to model aerosols. Simulation of atmospheric aging was performed on volatile biogenic (β-pinene) or anthropogenic (naphthalene) precursors of SOA condensing on soot particles. The similar physical properties for both SOA, but distinct differences in chemical composition (e.g., aromatic compounds, oxidation state, unsaturated carbonyls) enabled to determine specifically induced toxic effects of SOA. Results In A549 cells, exposure to naphthalene-derived SOA induced stress-related airway remodeling and an early type I immune response to a greater extent. Transcriptomic analysis of EA.hy926 cells not directly exposed to aerosol and integration with metabolome data indicated generalized systemic effects resulting from the activation of early response genes and the involvement of cardiovascular disease (CVD) -related pathways, such as the intracellular signal transduction pathway (PI3K/AKT) and pathways associated with endothelial dysfunction (iNOS; PDGF). Greater induction following anthropogenic SOA exposure might be causative for the observed secondary genotoxicity. Conclusion Our findings revealed that the specific effects of SOA on directly exposed epithelial cells are highly dependent on the chemical identity, whereas non directly exposed endothelial cells exhibit more generalized systemic effects with the activation of early stress response genes and the involvement of CVD-related pathways. However, a greater correlation was made between the exposure to the anthropogenic SOA compared to the biogenic SOA. In summary, our study highlights the importance of chemical aerosol composition and the use of cell systems with cell-to-cell interplay on toxicological outcomes. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive brain tumour that creates an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Microglia, the brain’s resident immune cells, play a crucial role in this environment. Glioblastoma cells can reprogramme microglia to create a supportive niche that promotes tumour growth. However, the mechanisms controlling the acquisition of a transcriptome associated with a tumour-supportive microglial reactive state are not fully understood. In this study, we investigated changes in the transcriptional profile of BV2 microglia exposed to C6 glioma cells. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed a significant upregulation of microglial inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (Id1) and Id2, helix-loop-helix negative transcription regulatory factors. The concomitant regulation of microglial ETS proto-oncogene 2, transcription factor (ETS2)-target genes, i.e., Dusp6, Fli1, Jun, Hmox1, and Stab1, led us to hypothesize that ETS2 could be regulated by ID proteins. In fact, ID2-ETS2 protein interactions increased in microglia exposed to glioma cells. In addition, perturbation of the ID2-ETS2 transcriptional axis influenced the acquisition of a microglial tumour-supportive phenotype. ID2 and ETS2 genes were found to be expressed by the tumour-associated microglia isolated from human glioblastoma tumour biopsies. Furthermore, ID2 and ETS2 gene expressions exhibited inverse prognostic values in patients with glioma in cohorts from The Cancer Genome Atlas. Collectively, our findings indicate that the regulation of ETS2 by ID2 plays a role in the transcriptional regulation of microglia in response to stimuli originating from glioblastoma cells, information that could lead to developing therapeutic strategies to manipulate microglial tumour-trophic functions.

Abstract Background Recovering pathogenic bacteria and yeast from pediatric blood cultures and reliably distinguishing between pathogens and contaminants are likely to be improved by increasing the volume of blood submitted to microbiology laboratories for culturing beyond the low volumes that have historically have been used. The primary aim of this study was to assess whether the pathogen recovery rate would increase after implementation of a weight-based algorithm for determining the intended volume of blood submitted for culturing. Secondary aims were to: 1) evaluate the effects of the algorithm implementation on the blood culture contamination rate; 2) determine whether pathogens might be found more often than contaminants in several as opposed to single bottles when more than one bottle is submitted; and 3) describe the microbiological findings for pathogens and contaminants in blood cultures by applying a clinical validation of true blood culture positivity. Methods A pre-post comparison of positivity and contamination rates after increasing the theoretical blood volume and number of blood culture bottles was performed, on the basis of a clinical validation of blood culture findings as pathogens vs contaminants. Results We examined 5327 blood cultures, including 186 with growth (123 true positives and 63 contaminated). The rate of true positive blood cultures significantly increased from 1.6% (42/2553) pre to 2.9% (81/2774, p = .002) post intervention. The rate of contaminated blood cultures did not change significantly during the study period (1.4% [35/2553] pre vs 1.0% [28/2774], p = .222) post intervention), but the proportion of contaminated cultures among all positive cultures decreased from 45% (35/77) pre to 26% (28/109, p = .005) post intervention. A microorganism that grew in a single bottle was considered a contaminant in 35% (8/23) of cases, whereas a microorganism that grew in at least two bottles was considered a contaminant in 2% (1/49, p

Construction workers often suffer from musculoskeletal disorders due to awkward postures and weight-carrying in hot environments. Previous studies have focused on posture, neglecting weight-carrying or the environment. This study develops an automated real-time version of the RULA-based posture assessment method, identifying a worker’s posture and load weight using an RGB-D Microsoft Kinect sensing camera. The method includes ambient workplace temperature and is tested on a small-scale bricklaying and reinforcement task. Laboratory tests show the method improves assessment efficiency significantly. This is the first of its kind to fully automate the assessment of construction worker WMSD propensity, providing a continuous warning system to replace manual supervision.

IntroductionChina is one of the world’s fastest-aging countries. Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) have emerged as a viable option for accommodating and serving older adults. However, Chinese CCRCs are still in the early stages, and comprehensive research on resident well-being is still deficient. The study aims to assess how well residents in CCRCs are faring in terms of their psychological and physical health, considering China’s aging population and changing societal structures.MethodsAfter a thorough literature review to pinpoint relevant well-being measures in psychological and physical health, the study implemented a survey to capture residents’ experiences and perceptions, and subsequently analyzed how well-being correlates with demographic characteristics.Results and discussionThe results show that while Chinese CCRCs can enhance residents’ well-being through personalized care and social activities, challenges such as psychological distress and declining physical health remain. Demographic factors, including living situation and length of stay, also affect residents’ well-being. The study emphasizes the importance of ongoing research and evaluation to guide evidence-based practices and improve CCRCs continuously. Overall, it offers a comprehensive analysis of the wellbeing of Chinese CCRCs residents, shedding light on both psychological and physical health aspects and providing valuable insights for enhancing CCRCs design, implementation, and evaluation in China and elsewhere.

This study examined the effects of immunocastration and surgical castration on the histomorphometric and transcriptome traits of the porcine skeletal muscle. We hypothesized that the differences in duration of androgen deprivation resulting from different castration methods influence skeletal muscle biology in a muscle-specific manner. This was tested by analyzing samples of m. longissimus dorsi (LD) and m. semispinalis capitis (SSC) from immunocastrated (IC; n = 12), entire male (EM; n = 12), and surgically castrated (SC; n = 12) pigs using enzyme/immunohistochemical classification and histomorphometric analysis of myofibers, quantitative PCR, and RNA sequencing. The results confirmed the distinctive histomorphometric profiles of LD and SSC and the castration method related muscle-specific effects at the histomorphometric and transcriptome levels. Long-term androgen deficiency (surgical castration) significantly reduced the proportion of fast-twitch type IIa myofibers in LD (P < 0.05), whereas short-term androgen deprivation (immunocastration) reduced the cross-sectional area of oxidative type I myofibers in SSC (P < 0.05). At the transcriptional level, glycolytic LD adapted to long- and short-term androgen deprivation by upregulating genes controlling myoblast proliferation and differentiation to maintain fiber size. In contrast, increased protein degradation through the ubiquitin ligase-mediated atrophy pathway (significantly increased TRIM63 and FBXO32 expression; P < 0.05) could underly reduced cross-sectional area of type I myofibers in the oxidative SSC in IC. Potential candidate genes (HK2, ARID5B, SERPINE1, and SCD) linked to specific metabolic profiles and meat quality traits were also identified in IC, providing a foundation for studying the effects of immunocastration on skeletal muscle fiber and carcass/meat quality traits.

Abstract Widespread persistent contaminants are a global environmental problem. In the Baltic Sea, wildlife contamination was first noticed in the 1960s, prompting the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to establish a comprehensive Swedish National Monitoring Programme for Contaminants in Marine Biota (MCoM) in 1978 run by the Swedish Museum of Natural History. Eight species have been analysed, four fish species (Atlantic herring, Atlantic cod, European perch, viviparous eelpout), one bivalve species (blue mussel), and egg from three bird species (common guillemot, common tern, Eurasian oystercatcher). Here, we present a dataset containing MCoM data from its start until 2021. It includes 36 sets of time-series, each analysed for more than 100 contaminants. The longest time-series is for common guillemot and starts in 1968. We describe the structure of MCoM including historic changes to the number of stations, sample treatment, analytical methods, instruments, and laboratories. The MCoM data is available at the Bolin Centre repository and on GitHub through our R package mcomDb. The latter will be updated yearly with new MCoM records.

Background and purpose: Delivery of high precision radiotherapy lymph node boosts requires detailed information on the interfraction positional variation of individual lymph nodes. In this study we characterized interfraction positional shifts of suspected malignant lymph nodes for rectal cancer patients receiving long course radiotherapy. Furthermore, we investigated parameters which could affect the magnitude of the position variation. Materials and Methods: Fourteen patients from a prospective clinical imaging study with a total of 61 suspected malignant lymph nodes in the mesorectum, presacral, and lateral regions, were included. The primary gross tumor volume (GTVp) and all suspected malignant lymph nodes were delineated on six magnetic resonance imaging scans per patient. Positional variation was calculated as systematic and random errors, based on shifts of center-of-mass, and estimated relative to either bony structures or the GTVp using a hierarchical linear mixed model. Results: Depending on location and direction, systematic and random variations (relative to bony structures) were within 0.6–2.8 mm and 0.6–2.9 mm, respectively. Systematic and random variations increased when evaluating position relative to GTVp (median increase of 0.6 mm and 0.5 mm, respectively). Correlations with scan time-point and relative bladder volume were found in some directions. Conclusions: Using linear mixed modeling, we estimated systematic and random positional variation for suspected malignant lymph nodes in rectal cancer patients treated with long course radiotherapy. Statistically significant correlations of the magnitude of the lymph node shifts were found related to scan time-point and relative bladder volume.

Abstract This interdisciplinary study examined the relationship between bone density and drilling forces required during trans-pedicular access to the vertebra using fresh–frozen thoraco-lumbar vertebrae from two female body donors (A, B). Before and after biomechanical examination, samples underwent high-resolution CT-quantification of total bone density followed by software-based evaluation and processing. CT density measurements (n = 4818) were calculated as gray values (GV), which were highest in T12 for both subjects (GVmaxA = 3483.24, GVmaxB = 3160.33). The emergence of Automated Driving Systems (ADSs) has transformed the landscape of safety assessment. ADSs, capable of controlling a vehicle without human intervention, represent a significant shift from traditional driver-centric approaches to vehicle safety. While traditional safety assessments rely on the assumption of a human driver in control, ADSs require a different approach that acknowledges the machine as the primary driver. Before market introduction, it is necessary to confirm the vehicle safety claimed by the manufacturer. The complexity of the systems necessitates a new comprehensive safety assessment that examines and validates the hazard identification and safety-by-design concepts and ensures that the ADS meets the relevant safety requirements throughout the vehicle lifecycle. The presented work aims to enhance the effectiveness of the assessment performed by a homologation service provider by using assessment templates based on refined requirement attributes that link to the operational design domain (ODD) and the use of Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), such as communication, positioning, and cybersecurity, in the implementation of ADSs. The refined requirement attributes can serve as safety-performance indicators to assist the evaluation of the design soundness of the ODD. The contributions of this paper are: (1) outlining a method for deriving assessment templates for use in future ADS assessments; (2) demonstrating the method by analysing three KETs with respect to such assessment templates; and (3) demonstrating the use of assessment templates on a use case, an unmanned (remotely assisted) truck in a limited ODD. By employing assessment templates tailored to the technology reliance of the identified use case, the evaluation process gained clarity through assessable attributes, assessment criteria, and functional scenarios linked to the ODD and KETs.

Abstract Background Intense selection of modern pig breeds has resulted in genetic improvement of production traits while the performance of local pig breeds has remained lower. As local pig breeds have been bred in extensive systems, they have adapted to specific environmental conditions, resulting in a rich genotypic and phenotypic diversity. This study is based on European local pig breeds that have been genetically characterized using DNA-pool sequencing data and phenotypically characterized using breed level phenotypes related to stature, fatness, growth, and reproductive performance traits. These data were analyzed using a dedicated approach to detect signatures of selection linked to phenotypic traits in order to uncover potential candidate genes that may underlie adaptation to specific environments. Results Analysis of the genetic data of European pig breeds revealed four main axes of genetic variation represented by the Iberian and three modern breeds (i.e. Large White, Landrace, and Duroc). In addition, breeds clustered according to their geographical origin, for example French Gascon and Basque breeds, Italian Apulo Calabrese and Casertana breeds, Spanish Iberian, and Portuguese Alentejano breeds. Principal component analysis of the phenotypic data distinguished the larger and leaner breeds with better growth potential and reproductive performance from the smaller and fatter breeds with low growth and reproductive efficiency. Linking the signatures of selection with phenotype identified 16 significant genomic regions associated with stature, 24 with fatness, 2 with growth, and 192 with reproduction. Among them, several regions contained candidate genes with possible biological effects on stature, fatness, growth, and reproductive performance traits. For example, strong associations were found for stature in two regions containing, respectively, the ANXA4 and ANTXR1 genes, for fatness in a region containing the DNMT3A and POMC genes and for reproductive performance in a region containing the HSD17B7 gene. Conclusions In this study on European local pig breeds, we used a dedicated approach for detecting signatures of selection that were supported by phenotypic data at the breed level to identify potential candidate genes that may have adapted to different living environments and production systems.

Abstract Serological assays measuring antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 are key to describe the epidemiology, pathobiology or induction of immunity after infection or vaccination. Of those, multiplex assays targeting multiple antigens are especially helpful as closely related coronaviruses or other antigens can be analysed simultaneously from small sample volumes, hereby shedding light on patterns in the immune response that would otherwise remain undetected. We established a bead-based 17-plex assay detecting antibodies targeting antigens from all coronaviruses pathogenic for humans: SARS-CoV-2, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, HCoV strains 229E, OC43, HKU1, and NL63. The assay was validated against five commercial serological immunoassays, a commercial surrogate virus neutralisation test, and a virus neutralisation assay, all targeting SARS-CoV-2. It was found to be highly versatile as shown by antibody detection from both serum and dried blot spots and as shown in three case studies. First, we followed seroconversion for all four endemic HCoV strains and SARS-CoV-2 in an outbreak study in day-care centres for children. Second, we were able to link a more severe clinical course to a stronger IgG response with this 17-plex-assay, which was IgG1 and IgG3 dominated. Finally, our assay was able to discriminate recent from previous SARS-CoV-2 infections by calculating the IgG/IgM ratio on the N antigen targeting antibodies. In conclusion, due to the comprehensive method comparison, thorough validation, and the proven versatility, our multiplex assay is a valuable tool for studies on coronavirus serology.

This paper presents a systematic literature review of the impact of emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR), and gamification on student engagement, learning outcomes, and employability in Built Environment (BE) education. This review covers studies conducted between 2013 and 2023, utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) framework. From an initial pool of 626 studies, 61 were identified and rigorously analyzed. The findings reveal that these technologies significantly enhance student engagement by providing immersive and interactive learning experiences that bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Furthermore, their use is shown to improve learning outcomes by facilitating a deeper understanding of complex concepts and increasing student motivation. In terms of employability, the integration of digital tools into BE education equips students with the requisite skills that are increasingly demanded in the modern workplace. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including high costs, limited resources, and the need for extensive faculty training, which act as barriers to the effective implementation of these technologies. Despite these challenges, this review underscores the transformative potential of digital technologies in BE education. This study is significant as it synthesizes recent evidence to highlight the critical role of digital technologies in reshaping BE education. It offers practical recommendations for educators and policymakers to enhance teaching and learning practices. Providing pathways for integrating these technologies into BE curricula, this study aims to inform future research and pedagogical strategies, ultimately contributing to the development of a highly skilled and adaptable workforce.

This study investigated the effects of chronic crowding-induced social stress and dimethyl fumarate (DMF) on borderline hypertensive rats, focusing on the transcription nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2 (NRF2) gene Nfe2l2, on the expression of selected NFR2-mediated gene expressions in the heart, and on vascular function. Rats were exposed to chronic crowding, DMF treatment (30 mg/kg/day, p.o.), or a combination of both for six weeks. Blood pressure (BP) was measured non-invasively, gene expressions were analysed using RT-qPCR, and vascular function was assessed by measuring noradrenaline (NA)-induced vasoconstriction and endothelium-dependent and -independent relaxations in the femoral arteries using a wire myograph. Chronic stress increased BP, Nfe2l2 expression, and NA-induced vasoconstriction, though it did not affect relaxation responses nor the left heart ventricle-to-body weight (LHV/BW) ratio. DMF elevated Nfe2l2 expression (as the main effect) in the heart but did not alter BP and vascular functions vs. control when administered alone. Interestingly, DMF increased the LHV/BW ratio, supposedly due to reductive stress induced by continuous NRF2 activation. When combined with stress, DMF treatment prevented stress-induced hypertension and mitigated NA-induced vasoconstriction without altering relaxation functions. In addition, the combination of stress and DMF increased Tnf and Nos2 expression and the expressions of several genes involved in iron metabolism. In conclusion, these findings suggest that DMF can prevent chronic stress-induced hypertension by reducing vascular contractility. Moreover, DMF itself may produce reductive stress in the heart and induce inflammation when combined with stress. This indicates a need for the careful consideration of long-term DMF treatment considering its impact on the heart.

This Mini-Review showcases the latest evidence on rehabilitation opportunities for older people with multimorbidity and frailty. There is growing evidence, that a person-centered and contextualized rehabilitation approach may offer benefits, not only in the context of preserving mobility, but especially targeting social participation. Modern rehabilitation aligns with the bio-psycho-social model of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), emphasizing the individual and collaboratively determined definition of personalized rehabilitation goals at the activity and participation level.Further studies are warranted to evaluate objective outcome-measurement tools within the domains of activity and participation.

The management and conservation of biodiversity relies on information on both the abundance of species and the potential impact of threats. Globally, one of the largest threats towards marine biodiversity is bycatch in fisheries. Under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), EU Member States are required to assess the status of species, such as the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena), in relation to their abundance and mortality due to bycatch every six years. The Vulnerable (HELCOM) Belt Sea population of harbour porpoise has been surveyed to determine its abundance six times using dedicated aerial or ship-based line-transect distance sampling surveys. Here, we estimated the first trend in population abundance over an 18 year period (2005-2022). Using the most recent abundance estimate, we computed a mortality limit applying the modified Potential Biological Removal (mPBR) method based on the regionally agreed conservation objective to restore or maintain 80% of carrying capacity over 100 years with an 80% probability. Over the past 18 years there has been a strong negative trend (-2.7% p.a.; 95% CI: -4.1%; + 1.3%) in abundance, with a 90.5% probability. The mortality limit was estimated to be 24 animals, which the current bycatch estimates (~900 porpoises/year from the commercial Danish and Swedish set net fishery fleets, with no data from Germany and other fishery types) exceed by far. The frequency and quality of data available on abundance for this population are higher than those available for the majority of marine species. Given the observed population decline and likely unsustainable levels of bycatch, the results presented here provide a strong basis to make informed, evidence-based management decisions for action for this population. Such action is needed urgently, before the dire situation of other porpoise species and populations around the globe is repeated.

This research explores edge computing for construction site monitoring using computer vision (CV)-based worker detection methods. The feasibility of using edge computing is validated by testing worker detection models (yolov5 and yolov8) on local computers and three edge computing devices (Jetson Nano, Raspberry Pi 4B, and Jetson Xavier NX). The results show comparable mAP values for all devices, with the local computer processing frames six times faster than the Jetson Xavier NX. This study contributes by proposing an edge computing solution to address data security, installation complexity, and time delay issues in CV-based construction site monitoring. This approach also enhances data sustainability by mitigating potential risks associated with data loss, privacy breaches, and network connectivity issues. Additionally, it illustrates the practicality of employing edge computing devices for automated visual monitoring and provides valuable information for construction managers to select the appropriate device.

Aircraft oil-strut shock absorbers rely on orifice designs to control fluid flow and optimize damping performance. However, the complex nature of cavitating flows poses significant challenges in predicting the influence of orifice geometry on energy dissipation and system reliability. This study presents a comprehensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of the effects of circular, rectangular, semicircular, and cutback orifice profiles on the internal flow characteristics and damping behavior of oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers. High-fidelity simulations reveal that the rectangular orifice generates higher damping pressures and velocity magnitude than those generated by others designs, while the semicircular shape reduces cavitation inception and exhibits a more gradual pressure recovery. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of considering both geometric and thermodynamic factors in the design and analysis of cavitating flow systems, as liquid properties and vapor pressure significantly impact bubble growth and collapse behavior. Increasing the orifice length had a negligible impact on damping but moderately raised orifice velocities. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing shock absorber performance across a range of operating conditions, ultimately enhancing vehicle safety and passenger comfort.

Abstract Background Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, laboratories worldwide have been facing an unprecedented increase in demand for PCR testing because of the high importance of diagnostics for prevention and control of virus spread. Moreover, testing demand has been varying considerably over time, depending on the epidemiological situation, rendering efficient resource allocation difficult. Here, we present a scalable workflow which we implemented in our laboratory to increase PCR testing capacity while maintaining high flexibility regarding the number of samples to be processed. Methods We compared the performance of five automated extraction instruments, using dilutions of SARS-CoV-2 cell culture supernatant as well as clinical samples. To increase PCR throughput, we combined the two duplex PCR reactions of our previously published SARS-CoV-2 PCR assay into one quadruplex reaction and compared their limit of detection as well as their performance on the detection of low viral loads in clinical samples. Furthermore, we developed a sample pooling protocol with either two or four samples per pool, combined with a specifically adapted SARS-CoV-2 quadruplex PCR assay, and compared the diagnostic sensitivity of pooled testing and individual testing. Results All tested automated extraction instruments yielded comparable results regarding the subsequent sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 detection by PCR. While the limit of detection of the quadruplex SARS-CoV-2 PCR assay (E-Gene assay: 28.7 genome equivalents (ge)/reaction, orf1ab assay: 32.0 ge/reaction) was slightly higher than that of our previously published duplex PCR assays (E-Gene assay: 9.8 ge/reaction, orf1ab assay: 6.6 ge/reaction), the rate of correctly identified positive patient samples was comparable for both assays. Sample pooling with optimized downstream quadruplex PCR showed no loss in diagnostic sensitivity compared to individual testing. Conclusion Specific adaptation of PCR assays can help overcome the potential loss of sensitivity due to higher levels of PCR multiplexing or sample dilution in pooled testing. Combining these adapted PCR assays with different sample processing strategies provides a simple and highly adjustable workflow for resource-efficient SARS-CoV-2 diagnostics. The presented principles can easily be adopted in a variety of laboratory settings as well as be adapted to pathogens other than SARS-CoV-2, making it feasible for any laboratory that conducts PCR diagnostics.

Introduction: Environmental regulation, as a vital component of public regulation in China, plays a crucial role in coordinating regional eco-efficiency, while the traditional hypothesis, Porter hypothesis, and uncertainty hypothesis offer three different perspectives for understanding the relationship between industry performance and environmental regulations.Methods: Based on the assumption of industry heterogeneity, 81 public-private partnership (PPP) waste-to-energy (WTE) incineration projects are analyzed using panel data from 66 cities within China during the period from 2013 to 2017 with the aims to reveal the underlying mechanism behind environmental regulation and the government subsides of public-private partnership waste-to-energy incineration projects by using multiple regression modeling.Results: The results show that the impact of environmental regulation on government subsides of PPP WTE projects has demonstrated an “Inverted-U”-shaped relationship with an inflection point, of which an increase in environmental regulation is positively correlated with an increase in subsidies at first then a negative correlation developing later.Discussion: The findings are significant in setting flexible environmental regulations according to the needs of regional economic and social development. In addition, they also supply a theoretical reference for promoting the WTE incineration industry’s sustainable and healthy development.

This study explores urban lower secondary school teachers’ sense of belonging, focusing on their relationships with students and their work experiences. Despite heightened interest in students’ sense of belonging in educational settings, empirical research on teacher belonging – especially in the context of urban lower secondary education – remains sparse. The limited focus on teachers’ experiences of belonging at work is paradoxical, given their crucial role in fostering student belonging and the global challenges regarding the recruitment and retention of teachers. While previous research on belonging has underscored its importance for job satisfaction, professional identity development, and motivation at work, there has been a lack of focus on understanding how student-teacher relationships specifically influence teachers’ experiences of belonging to their school. This study draws from interviews and observational data to gain a deeper understanding of teachers’ day-to-day practice. It gives voice to the reflections and experiences of teachers and leaders. The findings emphasize the critical role of reciprocal student–teacher relationships through three interrelated themes. Relationships of this nature not only foster student development but also enhance teachers’ sense of belonging. The study also highlights the importance of supportive collegial relationships. In particular, teachers report strong experiences of belonging when their identity as teachers and individual contributions resonate with their school’s values and educational goals.

Spectral computed tomography has received considerable interest in recent years since spectral measurements contain much richer information about the object of interest. In spectral computed tomography, we are interested in the energy channel-wise reconstructions of the object. However, such reconstructions suffer from a low signal-to-noise ratio and share the challenges of conventional low-dose computed tomography such as ring artifacts. Ring artifacts arise from errors in the flat fields and can significantly degrade the quality of the reconstruction. We propose an extended flat-field model that exploits high correlation in the spectral flat fields to reduce ring artifacts in channel-wise reconstructions. The extended model relies on the assumption that the spectral flat fields can be well-approximated by a low-rank matrix. Our proposed model works directly on the spectral flat fields and can be combined with any existing reconstruction model, e.g. filtered back projection and iterative methods. The proposed model is validated on a neutron data set. The results show that our method successfully diminishes ring artifacts and improves the quality of the reconstructions. Moreover, the results indicate that our method is robust; it only needs a single spectral flat-field image, whereas existing methods need multiple spectral flat-field images to reach a similar level of ring reduction.

Computed tomography (CT) is a method for synthesizing volumetric or cross-sectional images of an object from a collection of projections. Popular reconstruction methods for CT are based on the assumption that the projection geometry, which describes the relative location and orientation of the radiation source, object, and detector for each projection, is exactly known. However, in practice, these geometric parameters are estimated quantities with uncertainty. A failure to accurately estimate the geometry may lead to reconstructions with severe misalignment artifacts that significantly decrease their scientific or diagnostic value. We propose a novel reconstruction method that jointly estimates the reconstruction and the center-of-rotation offset for fan-beam tomography. The reconstruction method is based on a Bayesian approach that yields a point estimate for the reconstruction and center-of-rotation offset and, in addition, provides valuable information regarding their uncertainty. This is achieved by approximately sampling from the joint posterior distribution of the reconstruction and center-of-rotation offset using a hierarchical Gibbs sampler. Our methodology is highly flexible and can be adapted to other geometric parameters and/or scan modes. Through numerical experiments based on real tomographic data, we compare the proposed Bayesian method to two existing approaches to the problem of correcting the geometry and demonstrate that our method achieves comparable or better results under challenging conditions.

Objectives: To examine changes in functional capacity, health-related quality of life and psychological distress in patients with post-COVID-19 condition following a multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme. In addition, to explore whether additional respiratory muscle training for more impaired patients might support their recovery process. Design: Retrospective observational cohort study. Patients: A total of 779 patients with post-COVID-19 condition (47.9% female, mean age 56.6 years). Methods: Measures assessed were: 6-minute walk test (6MWT), 5-level EQ-5D (EQ-5D-5L) including EQ Visual Analogue Scale (EQ-VAS) and Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4). Data were provided pre- and post-rehabilitation from 2 cohorts: (i) patients participating in a regular multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme; and (ii) patients receiving additional respiratory muscle training due to an initially greater level of impairment. Dependent t-tests and general linear mixed models were used for data analysis. Results: A series of dependent t-tests revealed mean overall improvement for both groups in 6-minute walk test distance (6MWD), EQ-5D-5L index, EQ-VAS and PHQ-4 following the rehabilitation programme. General linear mixed models showed significant interaction effects between groups and time for the EQ-5D-5L index and 6MWD. Conclusion: A multidisciplinary rehabilitation programme appears to have a beneficial impact on the recovery process of patients with post-COVID-19 condition.

Abstract Caspases are a family of proteins mostly known for their role in the activation of the apoptotic pathway leading to cell death. In the last decade, caspases have been found to fulfill other tasks regulating the cell phenotype independently to cell death. Microglia are the immune cells of the brain responsible for the maintenance of physiological brain functions but can also be involved in disease progression when overactivated. We have previously described non-apoptotic roles of caspase-3 (CASP3) in the regulation of the inflammatory phenotype of microglial cells or pro-tumoral activation in the context of brain tumors. CASP3 can regulate protein functions by cleavage of their target and therefore could have multiple substrates. So far, identification of CASP3 substrates has been performed mostly in apoptotic conditions where CASP3 activity is highly upregulated and these approaches do not have the capacity to uncover CASP3 substrates at the physiological level. In our study, we aim at discovering novel substrates of CASP3 involved in the normal regulation of the cell. We used an unconventional approach by chemically reducing the basal level CASP3-like activity (by DEVD-fmk treatment) coupled to a Mass Spectrometry screen (PISA) to identify proteins with different soluble amounts, and consequently, non-cleaved proteins in microglia cells. PISA assay identified several proteins with significant change in their solubility after DEVD-fmk treatment, including a few already known CASP3 substrates which validated our approach. Among them, we focused on the Collectin-12 (COLEC12 or CL-P1) transmembrane receptor and uncovered a potential role for CASP3 cleavage of COLEC12 in the regulation of the phagocytic capacity of microglial cells. Taken together, these findings suggest a new way to uncover non-apoptotic substrates of CASP3 important for the modulation of microglia cell physiology.

Real estate developers typically assess potential projects using feasibility analyses and industry-standard heuristics, which include capital costs, return on costs, and a subjective risk measure. This study explores real estate developers’ decision-making practices in selecting hurdle rates and common feasibility analysis techniques, surveying 225 Australian and New Zealand developers. The main findings are that most developers use specific ‘go/no-go’ hurdle rate mechanisms irrespective of primary real estate type, with the majority using margin on development cost (MDC) or internal rate of return (IRR); the boundaries between traditional speculative development and real estate investment through the use of securitization methods have become blurred; many developers use both quantitative metrics, with qualitative methods and specific structural checks to manage the risks involved; and the two most frequent methods of determining site value prior to acquisition are the residual land value and discounted cash flow methods. Most place a heavy reliance on industry-accepted heuristics and do not have a predetermined process and method for altering or adapting the chosen hurdle rates and benchmarks. This research provides a contribution to property development practice from the Antipodean perspective which until now has been more focused on the UK view, enabling more generalized application internationally.

The Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model has significantly contributed to global infrastructure and public service provision. The evolution of the PPP model closely aligns with policy directives. China’s PPP policy evolution has included five stages: budding (1986–2000), fluctuating (2001–2008), steady (2009–2012), expanding (2013–2018), and stagnating (2019–present). This study employs bibliometric analysis and co-word analysis to examine 407 policies enacted by the Chinese government from 1986 to 2018. By extracting policy text keywords at various stages and constructing a co-word network matrix, this study delineates the distinctive characteristics of Chinese PPP policies across different epochs. It can be found that critical areas such as “government credit”, “contract spirit”, and “power supervision” are still underappreciated. The challenges confronting China’s PPP model are multifaceted, stemming from policy gaps that have led to substantial project difficulties. Although the government proposed a new mechanism for franchising in 2023, the new mechanism is only for new PPP projects, and the difficulties of existing PPP projects have not been solved. This study advocates for enhancements in project bankability, regulatory clarity, institutional environment improvement, contract spirit defense, and the development of the PPP-REITs model to address these issues.

The internal flow in oleo-pneumatic shock absorbers is a complex multiphysics problem combining the interaction between highly unsteady turbulent flow and multiphase mixing, among other effects. The aim is to present a validated simulation methodology that facilitates shock absorber performance prediction by capturing the dominant internal flow physics. This is achieved by simulating a drop test of approximately 1 tonne with an initial contact vertical speed of 2.7 m/s, corresponding to a light jet. The flow field solver is ANSYS Fluent, using an unsteady two-dimensional axisymmetric multiphase setup with a time-varying inlet velocity boundary condition corresponding to the stroke rate of the shock absorber piston. The stroke rate is calculated using a two-equation dynamic system model of the shock absorber under the applied loading. The simulation is validated against experimental measurements of the total force on the shock absorber during the stroke, in addition to standard physical checks. The flow field analysis focuses on multiphase mixing and its influence on the turbulent free shear layer and recirculating flow. A mixing index approach is suggested to facilitate systematically quantifying the mixing process and identifying the distinct stages of the interaction. It is found that gas–oil interaction has a significant impact on the flow development in the shock absorber’s upper chamber, where strong mixing leads to a periodic stream of small gas bubbles being fed into the jet’s shear layer from larger bubbles in recirculation zones, most notably in the corner between the orifice plate and outer shock absorber wall.

Objective: The Austrian Federal Pension Insurance (PVA) developed a preventive inpatient health program, “Gesundheitsvorsorge-Aktiv (GVA),” for patients with musculoskeletal disorders. Individualized modular interventions and therapeutical measures (movement optimization, movement motivation, and mental health) are designed to improve occupational participation by influencing lifestyle factors and health-related quality of life. The study aimed to evaluate the new prevention-oriented and more personalized inpatient health program GVA.Methods: Patients underwent a standard inpatient health program, with emphasis on exercise management, exercise motivation, or psychological aspects. Submodule-dependent outcomes were assessed in patients (n = 330) at the start, end of treatment, and 6 months thereafter. Quality of Life (EQ-5D-5L), psychosocial aspects of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-D), and Work Ability Index (WAI) were queried.Results: The results consistently showed positive short and long-term effects. The subjective assessments of current work ability improved while the impairment of work performance was reduced. Positive changes in the psychosocial sphere were observed, alongside improvements in the health-related quality of life. Patients in the exercise optimization module performed better in all respects.Conclusion: In summary, GVA represents a valuable preventive health measure that leads to a holistic increase in well-being and can also ensure the maintenance of the ability to work.

Asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers (AMZIs) can, in principle, enable continuous wavelength tuning of a laser when used as intra-cavity filters. Their simplicity and good compatibility with generic foundry platforms are major advantages. However, the difficulty to develop a well-defined and robust control strategy is an important drawback which restricts the use-cases of these tunable lasers. Here, we make an in-depth investigation of the tunability properties of a laser including a single-stage AMZI in its cavity. We find that due to imperfections of Electro-Optic Phase Modulators (EOPMs), the dependence of the phase variation with the applied voltage is not linear. Because integrated EOPMs cannot be individually calibrated, these nonlinearities prevent a precise and independent tuning of the phase and amplitude of the AMZI transfer function, and thus continuous tuning cannot be reliably achieved. To overcome this issue, we propose a refined control strategy which allows for semi-continuous tuning. With this approach, we demonstrate a piece-wise continuous tuning of the emission wavelength by taking advantage of the coupling between amplitude and phase in the AMZI response. With our refined control strategy, we achieve tuning of the emission wavelength over the full free spectral range (FSR) of the AMZI.

The Turopolje pig (TP) is a local Croatian pig breed that almost became extinct in the second half of the 20th century. Today, the TP is still endangered, and a new conservation strategy based on products with higher added value is needed to preserve the breed. There is little information on the quality of TP meat products such as smoked and dry-cured ham, including the impact of natural feeds or processing innovations such as smoke reduction. This study, therefore, investigated the effects of the animal’s diet (either conventionally fed or acorn-supplemented) and the processing method (standard or lightly smoked) on the quality traits of dry-cured TP ham. Twenty hams, evenly distributed among the treatments, were processed for 15 months and then analysed for physicochemical and textural traits, volatiles and sensory profile. The hams from acorn-supplemented pigs lost less weight during processing (p ≤ 0.05). Otherwise, the diet had no significant effect on most examined ham traits. The exceptions were protein content and the texture parameter hardness, which decreased (p ≤ 0.05), and the degree of proteolysis and colour parameters, which increased (p ≤ 0.05) as a result of acorn supplementation. However, these effects were generally small and varied between the inner (m. biceps femoris) and outer (m. semimembranosus) muscles. Furthermore, acorn supplementation was associated with less typical ham odour and lower sensory scores for sweetness and colour uniformity (p ≤ 0.05). The smoke reduction had no effect on the physicochemical and colour properties but resulted in a significant reduction (p ≤ 0.05) in the volatile phenolic compounds and an improved texture to the hams. This was reflected both in reduced (p ≤ 0.05) hardness, identified in the instrumental analysis, and in an increased (p ≤ 0.05) softness, solubility and moistness, identified in the sensory evaluation. To summarize, the quality of the TP ham under the conditions studied was only slightly affected by acorn supplementation, whereas reduced smoking had a more significant effect, which was mainly reflected in an improved texture.

With digital transformation underway in various Chinese construction enterprises, each enterprise has progressed differently, and a clear direction for future digital transformation and upgrading is lacking. As such, the importance of measuring the level of digitization among Chinese construction enterprises is increasing. This paper presents a model for evaluating digital transformation maturity within construction enterprises. The model considers six aspects: digital strategy, digital business applications, digital technology capabilities, and so on. The digital maturity of enterprises is determined using the Analysis of Hierarchy (AHP)-Decision Making Experiment and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method. Technical abbreviations are explained when first used. This study demonstrates that digital business applications are the most significant primary indicator, with a weight of 29.53%. The success of digital transformation in the construction industry is strongly influenced by the interconnection between digital technology and construction sites, as well as other factors such as new technical personnel, digital infrastructure, digital innovation, and innovation iteration ability. It is crucial to understand how digital technology and the construction industry can effectively connect in order to achieve success in this realm. This paper aims to enhance the digital transformation capabilities and efficiency of construction companies and boost their core competitiveness through targeted measures.

Efficient measurement of labor input is a critical aspect of on-site control and management in construction projects, as labor input serves as the primary and direct determinant of project outcomes. However, conventional manual inspection methods are off-line, tedious, and fail to capture their effectiveness. To address this issue, this research presents a novel method that leverages Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors attached to hand tools during construction activities to measure labor input in a timely and precise manner. This approach encompasses three steps: temporal–spatial feature extraction, self-similarity matrix calculation, and local specific structure identification. The underlying principle is based on the hypothesis that repetitive use data from hand tools can be systematically collected, analyzed, and converted into quantitative measures of labor input by the automatic recognition of repetition patterns. To validate this concept and assess its feasibility for general construction activities, we developed a preliminary prototype and conducted a pilot study focusing on rotation counting for a screw-connection task. A comparative analysis between the ground truth and the predicted results obtained from the experiments demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of measuring labor input using IMU sensors on hand tools, with a relative error of less than 5%. To minimize the measurement error, further work is currently underway for accurate activity segmentation and fast feature extraction, enabling deeper insights into on-site construction behaviors.

Rapid urban development has promoted economic development, but it has also created social problems. Urban renewal provides an important means of achieving sustainable urban development. After 2012, it became a research hotspot with people-oriented and organic renewal concepts. To understand the research trends in urban renewal during 2012–2022, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis was conducted to identify research progress, fields, hotspots, and trends. The core collection is based on the Web of Science (WoS) database, with a total of 2692 publications. The volume of publications, journal of publication, country, institution, research scope, and keywords were selected as the object of analysis. The results reveal that since 2012, the volume of urban renewal articles has been gradually increasing, reaching a maximum of 417 in 2022. China is the largest and most influential country in terms of the number of articles published, but the cooperation between institutions and authors is not strong. The research hotspots can be summarized as the connotation and practice of urban renewal, approaches to urban renewal, and sustainable urban development. Future directions for research are identified as including an innovative multi-corporate governance model, community-based renewal, further exploration of sustainable renewal practices, and interdisciplinary applications of urban renewal.

Abstract Preserving diversity of indigenous pig (Sus scrofa) breeds is a key factor to (i) sustain the pork chain (both at local and global scales) including the production of high-quality branded products, (ii) enrich the animal biobanking and (iii) progress conservation policies. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) chips offer the opportunity for whole-genome comparisons among individuals and breeds. Animals from twenty European local pigs breeds, reared in nine countries (Croatia: Black Slavonian, Turopolje; France: Basque, Gascon; Germany: Schwabisch-Hällisches Schwein; Italy: Apulo Calabrese, Casertana, Cinta Senese, Mora Romagnola, Nero Siciliano, Sarda; Lithuania: Indigenous Wattle, White Old Type; Portugal: Alentejana, Bísara; Serbia: Moravka, Swallow-Bellied Mangalitsa; Slovenia: Krškopolje pig; Spain: Iberian, Majorcan Black), and three commercial breeds (Duroc, Landrace and Large White) were sampled and genotyped with the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler (GGP) 70 K HD porcine genotyping chip. A dataset of 51 Wild Boars from nine countries was also added, summing up to 1186 pigs (~ 49 pigs/breed). The aim was to: (i) investigate individual admixture ancestries and (ii) assess breed traceability via discriminant analysis on principal components (DAPC). Albeit the mosaic of shared ancestries found for Nero Siciliano, Sarda and Moravka, admixture analysis indicated independent evolvement for the rest of the breeds. High prediction accuracy of DAPC mark SNP data as a reliable solution for the traceability of breed-specific pig products.

The social contact rate has influenced the transmission of COVID-19, with more social contact resulting in more contagion cases. We chose 18 countries with the most confirmed cases in the first 200 days after the Wuhan lockdown. This was the first study using the dynamic social contact rate to simulate the epidemic under diverse restriction policies over 500 days since the COVID-19 outbreak. The developed General Dynamic Model suggested that the probability of contagion ranged from 12.52% to 39.39% in the epidemic. The geometric mean of the social contact rates differed from 18.21% to 96.00% between countries. The restriction policies in developed economies were 3.5 times more efficient than in developing economies. We compare the effectiveness of different policies for disease prevention and discuss the influence of policy adjustment frequency for each country. Maintaining the tightest restriction or alternate tightening and loosening restrictions was recommended, with each having an average 72.45% and 79.78% reduction in maximum active cases, respectively.

Cost overruns are a common problem for public works projects, often due to modifications to the original design. While the causes of these modifications have been studied, the legal framework’s impact and limitations on these modifications have received extensive treatment, with no specific case studies from different countries. This paper explores the relationship between modifications in Spanish public works projects and their compliance with legal limits, investigating the alignment between base bidding prices and eventual costs after adjustments. The study also delves into the strategic behaviour of construction companies in Spain, which frequently involves manipulating project costs to match the initially proposed bidding price. Statistical methods, such as the Spearman correlation test and graphical analysis, confirm a nearly exact relationship between base bid price and final price. Also, a modification costs comparison for two different legal periods highlights the legal framework’s influence, as a less restrictive framework leads into higher average cost overruns. It provides valuable information to avoid malpractice for tendering institutions, practitioners, and legal developers, as well as those interested in the Spanish public works sector, and opens the door for future research on solving this problem.

This review compiles information on PCDD/F- and PCB-contaminated eggs from 20 years of global egg monitoring around emission sources in four continents conducted by the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) and Arnika as well as a compilation of data from scientific literature. IPEN monitored 127 pooled egg samples including samples from 113 chicken flocks at potential PCDD/F- and PCB-contaminated sites around priority sources listed in the Stockholm Convention (e.g. waste incinerators, metal industries, cement plants, and open burning). 99 (88%) of pooled egg samples were above the EU maximum limits for PCDD/Fs (2.5 pg PCDD/F-TEQ/g fat) or the sum of PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs (5 pg PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ/g fat). Children consuming such eggs exceed the tolerable weekly intake (TWI). This demonstrates that close to 90% of these areas were not safe for the production of free-range eggs. Sixteen out of the 113 egg samples (14%) were contaminated above 50 pg TEQ/g fat and exceeded the EU maximum limit more than 10 times. From the 26 pooled egg samples around incinerators 24 (92%) exceeded the limit with a mean of 43.1 pg TEQ/g fat (2.6–234 pg TEQ/g). All 21 egg samples around metal industries (4.4–112.6 pg TEQ/g fat) were above limits with mean concentration of 26.0 pg TEQ/g fat. Also all 7 egg samples measured at e-waste recycling sites were above limits (mean 308 pg TEQ/g fat). In 58 (51%) pooled egg samples the PCB-TEQ was above 5 pg TEQ/g fat exceeding the EU maximum limit with dioxin-like PCBs alone. This highlights the role of commercial PCBs for global contamination with dioxin-like compounds. It was discovered that around metal industries, shredder plants, open burning sites of e-waste and dump sites, a high share of contamination was caused by dl-PCBs. This clearly shows severe PCB release from the end-of-life management of PCB-containing equipment in developing countries. Also highly contaminated eggs were found at many sites where plastic was incinerated. The highest contaminated egg sample ever measured came from an e-waste site in Ghana and had 856 pg TEQ/g fat plus 300 pg TEQ from brominated dioxins (PBDD/Fs). Other extreme PCDD/F contaminations of eggs were found at a chlor-alkali site (514 pg TEQ/g fat), Agent Orange contaminated areas in Vietnam (490, 249 and 246 pg TEQ/g fat) and e-waste sites (568 and 520 pg TEQ/g fat). Where DR CALUX® bioassay revealed higher TEQ compared to measured PCDD/F-PCB-TEQ in IPEN studies, polybrominated PBDD/F were also measured and detected up to 300 pg TEQ/g fat at e-waste sites. One positive outcome from the IPEN studies is that all 10 pooled supermarket eggs in developing countries were below regulatory limit. Policy recommendations are made including: a systematic assessment of areas around PCDD/Fs and PCBs sources; measures for reduction of exposures of populations; urgent control of emission sources including PCB equipment, the open burning of plastic, and the use of plastic as fuel in boilers/incinerators in developing countries without air pollution control. Furthermore, soil limits need to be re-assessed and lowered for free-range poultry.

Článek se věnuje způsobům vypořádání se s krizovou situací (epidemií) v dílech právně filosofických autorů sedmnáctého století (Hobbes, Spinoza, Mansvelt, Locke) a dílech krásné literatury (Mann, Camus, Čapek) a zkoumá možnosti jejich využití v současném prostředí právního řádu České republiky. Zjištěním článku je, že metody použité v této literatuře jsou přenositelné i do současnosti a mohou tak nabídnout alespoň kontury racionální regulace. Určité meze regulace, plynoucí nejen ze sféry ryze právního uvažování, ale také z literatury (včetně literatury počátku dvacátého století v ČR) jsou proto možným základem naší současné právní identity.

Accidents and injuries continue to be major problems in the construction industry despite persistent endeavours over the years to improve health and safety management. Novel approaches using emerging technologies can enhance construction safety performance. Given their limited adoption and lack of empirical evidence in the context of developing countries, this paper examines the predictors influencing the successful adoption of safety technologies in the construction industry. Using a survey questionnaire involving 133 Malaysian construction professionals, the significance of the predictors is prioritised. A factor analysis is used to reduce the predictors involved into a fewer number of dimensions. The most influential predictors are presented. Four underlying dimensions of the surveyed predictors are uncovered, comprising organisational commitment/technology orientation, supporting technological attributes, personal perception/performance expectancy and government support. The rate of technology implementation to improve safety risk mitigation in construction is still limited. By taking cognisance of the critical influential predictors involved, the adoption level of safety technology could be raised. This paper bridges the identified knowledge gap regarding the dimensionality of safety technology adoption predictors in construction, with findings that shed new light on the factors influencing technology adoption in a developing country to stimulate technological innovations to streamline construction safety. Given the lack of systematic construction industry knowledge management (KM) approaches, particularly in the developing world, an increased understanding of their value for organisational and operational process improvement is needed to improve performance growth through their adoption rate. In response, this study appraised the usefulness of KM practices and KM-enabling tools and techniques used by construction-based organisations. Drawn on a Malaysian field survey, the perceived importance of variables were prioritised using the relative importance index (RII) technique. Spearman’s rank correlation tests were used to appraise the degree of agreement between the respondent groups. Then, a factor analysis revealed five major underlying dimensions of KM benefits for project delivery. Conventional techniques are rated more effective than IT-based tools for construction applications. The association between benefits and tools and techniques were also analysed. This paper contributes meaningfully to the value of KM for improving construction project delivery.

Cost overruns are a ubiquitous feature of construction projects, and realistic budgeting at the development stage plays a significant role in their control. However, the application of existing models to budgeting for power plant projects is restricted by the limited amount of project-specific cost data available. This study overcomes this by using a Classification and Regression Tree (CART) approach involving mixed methods of website visits, document study, and expert opinion to predict the amount of project cost (PC) and cost contingency (CC) needed to cover probable cost increases by the use of models containing readily available project attributes and national economic parameters at the project development stage. The modeling process is demonstrated and tested with a case study involving 58 Bangladeshi power plant projects – producing average absolute errors ranging from 0.7% to 1.7% and enabling project cost, inflation rate, and GDP to be identified as significant factors affecting PC and CC modeling. The approach can be applied to predict the PC during preliminary budgeting and selecting a project type and location aligned to the country’s economic status and policy-making strategies, thus facilitating further investment decisions.

Previous studies demonstrate that rework can lead to more safety incidents. However, there is an inadequate understanding of how construction rework reduction measures may significantly decrease the likelihood of safety incidents in developing countries. To explore how construction organisations can integrate rework minimisation and safety management in practice, this study examines the effectiveness of the management strategies that can reduce rework and improve safety. Based on a two-stage detailed literature review of both rework- and safety-related studies, 13 managerial measures are recognised that are capable of jointly reducing rework and safety incidents for construction projects. A field survey involving construction professionals in Malaysia was used to analyse and rank these measures according to effectiveness indices for rework, safety and joint rework-safety management. Factor analysis yielded a two-factor solution comprising (1) project management best practices and (2) proactive competency management. It is suggested that the construction industry would benefit from simultaneously ameliorating the quality and safety performance of projects by adopting effective joint measures that are predominantly guided by process (best practices) and people (competency management) components.

In the 21st Century, the construction industry regards green building as an important breakthrough to achieve sustainable development, and energy-saving retrofits of residential buildings has been conducted globally with China no exception. In order to better understand consumers’ attitudes and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for green retrofits and identify the shortcomings of the industry’s development, this study designs a retrofit scheme and organizes a questionnaire survey to collect feedback of responds from the Pearl River Delta, China regarding their WTP for energy-saving retrofits of residential buildings and their decision factors. The study identifies a retrofit cost of $517.92 and found that 94.29% of respondents had the intention of green reconstruction. The results of a Pearson correlation analysis and one-way ANOVA show the professional background of respondents and their WTP to be negatively correlated, while education level, perceived value, perceived behavior control, and feelings of the surrounding reference group are positively correlated with participants’ expected inputs. Of all the factors considered, the level of education and feelings of the surrounding reference group influence budget most significantly. The findings will help property developers and the government to design better marketing strategies and launch corresponding policies, thereby promoting the development of the green building industry. The health effects of exposure to secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) are still limited. Here, we investigated and compared the toxicities of soot particles (SP) coated with β-pinene SOA (SOAβPin-SP) and SP coated with naphthalene SOA (SOANap-SP) in a human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) residing at the air–liquid interface. SOAβPin-SP mostly contained oxygenated aliphatic compounds from β-pinene photooxidation, whereas SOANap-SP contained a significant fraction of oxygenated aromatic products under similar conditions. Following exposure, genome-wide transcriptome responses showed an Nrf2 oxidative stress response, particularly for SOANap-SP. Other signaling pathways, such as redox signaling, inflammatory signaling, and the involvement of matrix metalloproteinase, were identified to have a stronger impact following exposure to SOANap-SP. SOANap-SP also induced a stronger genotoxicity response than that of SOAβPin-SP. This study elucidated the mechanisms that govern SOA toxicity and showed that, compared to SOAs derived from a typical biogenic precursor, SOAs from a typical anthropogenic precursor have higher toxicological potency, which was accompanied with the activation of varied cellular mechanisms, such as aryl hydrocarbon receptor. This can be attributed to the difference in chemical composition; specifically, the aromatic compounds in the naphthalene-derived SOA had higher cytotoxic potential than that of the β-pinene-derived SOA.
