Abstract

The lifetimes of the low-lying excited states 2+ and 4+ have been directly measured in the neutron-deficient 106,108Sn isotopes. The nuclei were populated via a deep-inelastic reaction and the lifetime measurement was performed employing a differential plunger device. The emitted γ rays were detected by the AGATA array, while the reaction products were uniquely identified by the VAMOS++ magnetic spectrometer. Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the B(E2;21+→0g.s.+) values and it describes well the experimental pattern for 104−114Sn; the B(E2;41+→21+) values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in 108Sn.

3. The comparative analysis of the R290 heat pump system working with standard expansion valve and two-phase ejector

Abstract

The heat pump systems play a significant role in the global energy transition process of household heating sources towards zero-emission. One of the key technologies to improve the efficiency of heat pump systems utilizing natural working fluids is application of the two-phase ejector, which is able to recover part of the expansion losses. The comparative experimental analysis of a novel ejector-based air-source R290 heat pump was performed. The two two-phase bypass ejectors were installed in a R290 heat pump unit and a number of modifications were introduced to the baseline system. The adaptions included implementation of the internal heat exchanger, increasing the superheat at the compressor suction port, and a liquid separator for handling the two-phase flow at the ejector outlet. The performance evaluation of the system was based on COP and system heating capacity. The comparative analysis with the R290 heat pump utilizing standard expansion valve and two-phase ejector was carried out for typical operating conditions for its domestic application during heating seasons. The system working with an ejector as a throttling device allowed for up to 33% of COP improvement over the system utilizing an expansion valve. Additionally, the ejector implementation resulted in decreased pressure ratio of the compressor, which increased the system heating capacity by up to 90%.

Abstract

The low-lying excited states in the neutron-deficient $N = Z + 1$ nucleus $^{87}_{43}$Tc$_{44}$ have been studied via the fusion-evaporation reaction $^{54}$Fe $(^{36}Ar, 2n1p)$ $^{87}$Tc at the Grand Accelerateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL), France. The AGATA spectrometer was used in conjunction with the auxiliary NEDA, Neutron Wall, and DIAMANT detector arrays to measure coincident prompt γ rays, neutrons, and charged particles emitted in the reaction. A level scheme of $^{87}$Tc from the $(9/2^+_{g.s})$ state to the $( 33 / 2^+_1$) state was established based on six mutually coincident γ -ray transitions. The constructed level structure exhibits a rotational behavior with a sharp backbending at $ℏω ≈ 0.50$ MeV. A decrease in alignment frequency and increase in alignment sharpness in the odd-mass isotonic chains around $N=44$ is proposed as an effect of the enhanced isoscalar neutron-proton interactions in odd-mass nuclei when approaching the $N=Z$ line.

Abstract

The GALILEO γ -ray spectrometer has been constructed at the Legnaro National Laboratory of INFN (LNL-INFN). It can be coupled to advanced ancillary devices which allows nuclear structure studies employing the variety of in-beam γ -ray spectroscopy methods. Such studies benefit from reactions induced by the intense stable beams delivered by the Tandem-ALPI-PIAVE accelerator complex and by the radioactive beams which will be provided by the SPES facility. In this paper we outline two experiments performed within the experimental campaign at GALILEO coupled to the EUCLIDES Si-ball and the Neutron Wall array. The first one was aimed at spectroscopic studies in A=31 mirror nuclei and the second one at measurements of lifetimes of excited states in nuclei in the vicinity of 100 Sn.

Abstract

In this work we present a comparison between the two liquid scintillators BC-501A and BC-537 in terms of their performance regarding the pulse-shape discrimination between neutrons and γ rays. Special emphasis is put on the application of artificial neural networks . The results show a systematically higher γ -ray rejection ratio for BC-501A compared to BC-537 applying the commonly used charge comparison method. Using the artificial neural network approach the discrimination quality was improved to more than 95% rejection efficiency of γ rays over the energy range 150 to 1000 keV for both BC-501A and BC-537. However, due to the larger light output of BC-501A compared to BC-537, neutrons could be identified in BC-501A using artificial neural networks down to a recoil proton energy of 800 keV compared to a recoil deuteron energy of 1200 keV for BC-537. We conclude that using artificial neural networks it is possible to obtain the same γ -ray rejection quality from both BC-501A and BC-537 for neutrons above a low-energy threshold. This threshold is, however, lower for BC-501A, which is important for nuclear structure spectroscopy experiments of rare reaction channels where low-energy interactions dominates.

Abstract

Lifetimes of negative-parity states have been determined in the neutron deficient semi-magic (N = 50) nucleus $$^{95}\mathrm {Rh}$$ 95 Rh . The fusion-evaporation reaction $$^{58}Ni(^{40}Ca, 3p)$$ 58 N i ( 40 C a , 3 p ) was used to populate high-spin states in $$^{95}\mathrm {Rh}$$ 95 Rh at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator facility. The results were obtained using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) based on the Doppler broadened line shapes produced during the slowing down process of the residual nuclei in a thick $$6\;\mathrm {mg/cm}^2$$ 6 mg / cm 2 metallic target. B(M1) and B(E2) reduced transition strengths are compared with predictions from large-scale shell-model calculations.

Abstract

The low-lying energy spectrum of the extremely neutron-deficient self-conjugate (N = Z) nuclide 88 44Ru44 has been measured using the combination of the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) spectrometer, the NEDA and Neutron Wall neutron detector arrays, and the DIAMANT charged particle detector array. Excited states in 88Ru were populated via the 54Fe(36Ar; 2n )88Ru fusion-evaporation reaction at the Grand Acc�el�erateur National d'Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator complex. The observed -ray cascade is assigned to 88Ru using clean prompt - -2-neutron coincidences in anti-coincidence with the detection of charged particles, con�rming and extending the previously assigned sequence of low-lying excited states. It is consistent with a moderately deformed rotating system exhibiting a band crossing at a rotational frequency that is significantly higher than standard theoretical predictions with isovector pairing, as well as observations in neighboring N > Z nuclides. The direct observation of such a \delayed" rotational alignment in a deformed N = Z nucleus is in agreement with theoretical predictions related to the presence of strong isoscalar neutron-proton pair correlations.

Large-Scale Shell-Model calculations with realistic forces indicate that, independently of the pairing content of the interaction, the quadrupole force is dominant in the B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(g.s)(+)) values and it describes well the experimental pattern for Sn104-114 ; the B(E2;(+)(4) -> 2(1)(+)) values, measured here for the first time, depend critically on a delicate pairing-quadrupole balance, disclosed by the very precise results in Sn-108. Abstract

WOS: 000433206800010 The issue of pulse pile-up is frequently encountered in nuclear experiments involving high counting rates, which will distort the pulse shapes and the energy spectra. A digital method of off-line processing of pile-up pulses is presented. The pile-up pulses were firstly identified by detecting the downward-going zero-crossings in the first-order derivative of the original signal, and then the constituent pulses were reconstructed based on comparing the pile-up pulse with four models that are generated by combining pairs of neutron and.. standard pulses together with a controllable time interval. The accuracy of this method in resolving the pile-up events was investigated as a function of the time interval between two pulses constituting a pile-up event. The obtained results show that the method is capable of disentangling two pulses with a time interval among them down to 20 ns, as well as classifying them as neutrons or gamma rays. Furthermore, the error of reconstructing pile-up pulses could be kept below 6% when successive peaks were separated by more than 50 ns. By applying the method in a high counting rate of pile-up events measurement of the NEutron Detector Array (NEDA), it was empirically found that this method can reconstruct the pile-up pulses and perform neutron-gamma discrimination quite accurately. It can also significantly correct the distorted pulse height spectrum due to pile-up events. Abstract

Energy differences between analogue states in the T=1/2 Mg23-Na23 mirror nuclei have been measured along the rotational yrast bands. This allows us to search for effects arising from isospin-symmetry-breaking interactions (ISB) and/or shape changes. Data are interpreted in the shell model framework following the method successfully applied to nuclei in the f7/2 shell. It is shown that the introduction of a schematic ISB interaction of the same type of that used in the f7/2 shell is needed to reproduce the data. An alternative novel description, applied here for the first time, relies on the use of an effective interaction deduced from a realistic charge-dependent chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This analysis provides two important results: (i) The mirror energy differences give direct insight into the nuclear skin; (ii) the skin changes along the rotational bands are strongly correlated with the difference between the neutron and proton occupations of the s1/2 "halo" orbit.

Abstract

A Coulomb-excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of Ca42 was performed using a 170-MeV calcium beam from the TANDEM XPU facility at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro. γ rays from excited states in Ca42 were measured with the AGATA spectrometer. The magnitudes and relative signs of ten E2 matrix elements coupling six low-lying states in Ca42, including the diagonal E2 matrix elements of 21+ and 22+ states, were determined using the least-squares code gosia. The obtained set of reduced E2 matrix elements was analyzed using the quadrupole sum rule method and yielded overall quadrupole deformation for 01,2+ and 21,2+ states, as well as triaxiality for 01,2+ states, establishing the coexistence of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42. The experimental results were compared with the state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model and beyond-mean-field calculations, which reproduce well the general picture of shape coexistence in Ca42.

Abstract

Lifetimes of high-spin states have been measured in the semi-magic (N= 50) nucleus 94Ru. Excited states in 94Ru were populated in the 58Ni(40Ca, 4p)94Ru* fusion-evaporation reaction at the Grand Accélérateur National d’Ions Lourds (GANIL) accelerator complex. DSAM lifetime analysis was performed on the Doppler broadened line shapes in energy spectra obtained from ?-rays emitted while the residual nuclei were slowing down in a thick 6mg/cm^2 metallic 58Ni target. In total eight excited-state lifetimes in the angular momentum range I= (13 - 20) ? have been measured, five of which were determined for the first time. Abstract

WOS: 000348040900011, A new digital pulse-timing algorithm, to be used with the future neutron detector array NEDA, has been developed and tested. The time resolution of four 5 in diameter photomultiplier tubes (XP4512, R4144, R11833-100, and ET9390-kb), coupled to a cylindrical 5 in by 5 in BC501A liquict scintillator detector was measured by employing digital sampling electronics and a constant fraction discriminator (CFD) algorithm. The zero crossing of the CM algorithm was obtained with a cubic spline interpolation, which was continuous up to the second derivative. The performance of the algorithm was studied at sampling rates of 500 MS/s and 200 MS/s. The time resolution obtained with the digital electronics was compared to the values acquired with a standard analog CFD. The result of this comparison shows that the time resolution from the analog and the digital measurements at 500 MS/s and at 200 MS/s are within 15% for all the tested photomultiplier tubes. International audience; A Coulomb excitation experiment to study electromagnetic properties of 45Sc was performed at the Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw, using a 70 MeV 32S beam. Measured γ-ray intensities together with existing spectroscopic data were used to extract a set of matrix elements between the populated states. Upper limit on B(E3;7/2 − → 5/2 +) is given.

During the AGATA campaign at GANIL, the neutron-deficient Sn region was populated via a multi-nucleon transfer reaction in order to directly measure the lifetime of the first excited states with a plunger device, providing complementary information to previous results obtained with Coulomb excitation experiments. Abstract

Zakopane Conference on Nuclear Physics - Extremes of the Nuclear Landscape -- AUG 28-SEP 04, 2016 -- Zakopane, POLAND, WOS: 000398717500011, Mirror energy differences (MED) are a direct consequence of isospin symmetry breaking. Moreover, the study of MED has proved to give valuable information of several nuclear structure properties. We present the results of an experiment performed in GANIL to study the MED in mirror nuclei Mg-23-Na-23 up to high spin. The experimental values are compared with state-of-the-art shell model calculations. This permits to enlighten several nuclear structure properties, such as the way in which the nucleons alignment proceeds, the radius variation with J, the role of the spin-orbit interaction and the importance of isospin symmetry breaking terms of nuclear origin.

Abstract

International audience; Doppler Shift Attenuation Method (DSAM) analysis of excited-state lifetimes normally employs thin production targets mounted on a thick stopper foil (“backing”) serving to slow down and stop the recoiling nuclei of interest in a well-defined manner. Use of a thick, homogeneous production target leads to a more complex analysis as it results in a substantial decrease in the energy of the incident projectile which traverses the target with an associated change in the production cross section of the residues as a function of penetration depth. Here, a DSAM lifetime analysis using a thick homogeneous target has been verified using the Doppler broadened lineshapes of γ rays following the decay of highly excited states in the semi-magic (N = 50) nucleus 94Ru. Lifetimes of excited states in the 94Ru nucleus have been obtained using a modified version of the LINESHAPE package from the Doppler broadened lineshapes resulting from the emission of the γ rays, while the residual nuclei were slowing down in the thick (6 mg/cm2) metallic 58Ni target. The results have been validated by comparison with a previous measurement using a different (RDDS) technique.

Abstract

K. Hadyńska-Kl¸ek et al. ; 7 pags., 3 figs., 2 tabs., Shape parameters of a weakly deformed ground-state band and highly deformed slightly triaxial sideband in Ca42 were determined from E2 matrix elements measured in the first low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed with AGATA. The picture of two coexisting structures is well reproduced by new state-of-the-art large-scale shell model and beyond-mean-field calculations. Experimental evidence for superdeformation of the band built on 02+ has been obtained and the role of triaxiality in the A∼40 mass region is discussed. Abstract

WOS: 000344994600012, A comparative study of the neutron-gamma discrimination performance of a liquid scintillator detector BC501A coupled to four different 5 in photomultiplier tubes (ET9390kb, R11833-100, XP4512 and R4144) was carried out Both the Charge Comparison method and the Integrated Rise-Time method were implemented digitally to discriminate between neutrons and gamma rays emitted by a Cf-252 source. In both methods, the neutron-gamma discrimination capabilities of the four photomultiplier tubes were quantitatively compared by evaluating their figure-of-merit values at different energy regions between 50 keVee and 1000 keVee. Additionally, the results were further verified qualitatively using time-of-flight to distinguish gamma rays and neutrons. The results consistently show that photomultiplier tubes R11833-100 and ET9390kb generally perform best regarding neutron-gamma discrimination with only slight differences in figure-of-merit values. This superiority can be explained by their relatively higher photoelectron yield, which indicates that a scintillator detector coupled to a photomultiplier tube with higher photoelectron yield tends to result in better neutron-gamma discrimination performance. The results of this work will provide reference for the choice of photomultiplier tubes for future neutron detector arrays like NEDA. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

\hspace{-1mm}Low-lying excited states of $^{104}$Pd were investigated by means of Coulomb excitation using the $^{32}$S beam.~Gamma-ray spectra resulting from the de-excitation of these levels were measured with the EAGLE gamma-ray spectrometer at the Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw.~The first three excited states above the ground state up to 6$^{+}$ level were populated along-with the low-lying non-yrast states. Excitation of the 3$^{-}$ state at 2194~keV energy was also observed.

19th Real Time Conference (RT) -- MAY 26-30, 2014 -- Nara, JAPAN WOS: 000356458000028 This paper presents the final design and results of the FADC Mezzanine for the EXOGAM (EXOtic GAMma array spectrometer) and NEDA (Neutron Detector Array) detectors. The measurements performed include those of studying the effective number of bits, the energy resolution using HP-Ge detectors, as well as timing histograms and discrimination performance. Finally, the conclusion shows how a common digitizing device has been integrated in the experimental environment of two very different detectors which combine both low-noise acquisition and fast sampling rates. Not only the integration fulfilled the expected specifications on both systems, but it also showed how a study of synergy between detectors could lead to the reduction of resources and time by applying a common strategy. Starting from the front-end modules attached to the PMTs (PhotoMultiplier Tubes) and ending up with the data processing workstations, a comprehensive electronic system capable of dealing with the acquisition and pre-processing of the neutron array is detailed. Among the electronic modules required, we emphasize the front-end analog processing, the digitalization, digital pre-processing and communications firmware, as well as the integration of the GTS (Global Trigger and Synchronization) system, already used successfully in AGATA (Advanced Gamma Tracking Array). Abstract

A Monte Carlo simulation of the Neutron Wall detector system has been performed using GEANT4 . Mechanisms for the detection of neutrons in an aggregate of liquid scintillator detectors have been investigated in details, with the main aim to define optimum conditions for the detection and identification of multiple neutrons. Special emphasis was put on studying the scattering of neutrons between different detectors, which is the main source of the apparent increase of the number of detected neutrons, and hinders the selection of events with more than one emitted neutron. The results of the simulations were compared to experimental data obtained at the EUROBALL spectrometer using fusion–evaporation reactions. The quality of γ-ray spectra gated by 2 neutrons was improved 40 times, in terms of the relative intensity of γ-ray lines from nuclei produced with the emission of 2 and 1 neutrons. A similar increase of the relative γ-ray intensity was achieved in case of lines associated with the emission of 3 neutrons, with respect to lines from both 2 and 1 neutron evaporation channels. The improvements were only possible with a significant reduction of the intensity of the true 3 neutron emission γ-ray lines. The influence of small amounts of γ-rays mis-interpreted as neutrons was studied. It was found that it dramatically reduces the quality of the reduction of the effects due to scattered neutrons.

Abstract

Excited states of the neutron deficient Ag-101 nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 3rho1alpha) heavy-ion induced reaction at 261 meV by use of in-beam spectroscopic methods. On the basis of the measured gammagamma-cincidence relations and angular distribution ratios high-spin bands have been extended up to I-pi = 35/2(+), 45/2((-)) and (49/2(-)). The negative parity states at the highest energy have been interpreted as terminating non-collective oblate states in the framework of the Nilsson-Strutinsky cranking formalism.

Abstract

Linear polarization and angular correlations of gamma-rays depopulating excited states in the neutron-deficient nucleus Ru-94(44)50 have been measured, enabling firm spin-parity assignments for several excited states in this nucleus. The deduced multipolarities of strong transitions in the yrast structure were found to be mostly of stretched M1, E1, and E2 types and, in most cases, in agreement with previous tentative assignments. The deduced multipolarity of the 1869 keV and the connecting 257 and 1641 keV transitions indicates that the state at 6358 keV excitation energy has spin parity 12(1)(-) rather than 12(3)(+) as proposed in previous works. The presence of a 12(1)(-) state is interpreted within the framework of large-scale shell-model calculations as a pure proton-hole state dominated by the pi(p(1/2)(-1)circle times g(9/2)(-5)) and pi(p(3/2)(-1) g(9/2)(-5)) configurations. A new positive-parity state is observed at 6103 keV and is tentatively assigned as 12(2)(+). The 14(1)(-) state proposed earlier is reassigned as 13(4)(-) and is interpreted as being dominated by neutron particle-hole core excitations. The strengths of several E1 transitions have been measured and are found to provide a signature of core-excited configurations.

Abstract

High-spin states of the neutron deficient (100)pd nucleus have been investigated via the Cr-50(Ni-58, 4p alpha) and Zn-70(S-36,6n) heavy-ion induced reactions. For the detection of evaporated particles and gamma rays the NORDBALL array equipped with ancillary detectors and the EUROGAM II detector system were utilized. By the use of in-beam spectroscopic methods 89 transitions belonging to (100)pd have been observed, 49 of which were identified for the first time. The level scheme has been extended up to E-X approximate to 16 MeV excitation energy and I approximate to 25h. The experimental results were compared with the predictions of cranked shell model calculations. Maximal spin alignments were found in the (pig(9/2))(12+)(-4) (vd(5/2),g(7/2)(3)h(11/2))(13-) and (pig(9/2)(-3)p(1/2))(11-)(vd(5/2)g(7/2)(3)h(11/2))(13-) configurations. Possible existence of octupole correlations is discussed on the basis of 6 (E 1)lB(E2) values deduced for the decays of high-spin levels in the yrast negative-parity band. Excited states of As-68 nucleus were populated through the C-12(Ni-58,pn) reaction and investigated by in-beam gamma-spectroscopic methods. The NORDBALL detector array equipped with charged particle and neutron detectors was used to detect the evaporated particles and gamma-rays. The level scheme of As-68 was constructed on the basis of gamma gamma-coincidence relations up to 6 MeV excitation energy and J(pi) = (15(+)). The structure of the nucleus is discussed in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion-fermion model. The states below 2.3 MeV are described as members of proton-neutron-phonon multiplets. Abstract

Neutron deficient nuclei close to 100Sn have been studied using the NORDBALL Ge-detector array together with ancillary particle detectors. Evaporation residues from the compound nucleus 108Te were identified with charged particle and neutron detectors. In this paper a considerable extension of the level scheme of the nucleus 102Cd is presented. The strongest cascade of the new level scheme reveals an irregular sequence of dipole transitions above Iπ = 10+ extending up to spin 17. A strongly populated rather regular side band consisting of four quadrupole transitions ranging from spin 9 to spin 17 was also discovered. This band was tentatively assigned negative parity. Shell model calculations were performed and a very good agreement with the experimental results was found. The excited states could successfully be interpreted as neutron particle and proton hole excitations with respect to the doubly closed core 50100Sn50.

Abstract

High-spin states of the isotopes In-103,In-105,In-107,In-109 have been investigated using in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopic methods. Results from three different experiments are presented. Targets of Fe-54, Cr-50, and Mo-92 were bombarded by a 270 and 261 MeV Ni-58 beam and by a 95 MeV F-19 beam, respectively. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a charged-particle detector array and in the first two experiments also with a 1 pi neutron detector system. As a result of these experiments the level schemes of In-103,In-105,In-107,In-109 were significantly extended. Excited states of these odd-A indium isotopes are discussed within the framework of the nuclear shell model and the hole-core coupling scheme. Abstract

Excited states of Cd-103 were studied in the reaction Ni-58(Cr-50,4pn)Cd-103. The NORDBALL array with neutron and charged particle detectors was employed for the detection of gamma rays and light evaporated particles. The level scheme of Cd-103 was significantly extended. A strong cascade of E2 transitions connecting negative parity states was found, Shell model calculations were performed and positive parity excited states were interpreted in terms of neutron-particle and proton-hole excitations with respect to the doubly magic N = Z = 50 core. Abstract

Excited states in Cd-98, two proton holes from Sn-100, were identified and studied for the first time, using in-beam spectroscopy with highly selective ancillary detectors. The structure of the (pi g(9/2))(-2) two-proton-hole spectrum below a T-1/2 = 0.48(16) mu s isomer is deduced and compared to shell-model predictions. A tentative I-pi = (8(+)) assignment, as suggested by systematics, yields a strongly reduced B(E2,8(+) --> 6(+)) = 0.44((+20)(-10)) W.u., corresponding to an effective proton charge of e(pi) = 0.85((+20)(-10))e, which is at variance with existing theoretical predictions.

Abstract

The flow of γ-transitions through the superdeformed minimum of 143Eu is investigated by studying the intensities of four different types of γ-rays of superdeformed origin, obtained with a variety of gating conditions. They can all be explained rather well by schematic simulation calculations assuming only well known statistical properties. Information on level density, competition between E1 and E2 strengths and rotational damping width in the SD well is obtained, yielding a rather complete picture of the feeding mechanism into different regions of the second minimum.

Abstract

The present status of experimental approach to 100Sn in the spectroscopy of excited states is landmarked by the Tz=3/2 nuclei between 95Pd and 101In and the Tz=1 nuclei 94Pd and 98Cd. The detection limits with Pre-EUROBALL γ-arrays and ancillary detectors are below the 10−5 level of the total fusion- evaporation residue cross section. A large scale shell model analysis of the existing data reveals the shell structure at 100Sn, which shows a remarkable similarity to 56Ni. Evidence for an increasing proton-neutron interaction in approaching the N=Z line is deduced from high spin isomers and spherical yrast lines. The effective E2 operator for protons and neutrons and implications for a low lying particle-hole (ph) E2 excitation in 100Sn are discussed.

A method to enhance weak two-neutron exit channels in heavy-ion induced fusion-evaporation reactions is demonstrated with a data set from the NORDBALL detector array, True two-neutron events are enhanced in relation to spurious events from cross-talk by a factor of 30. In the process the peak-to-background ratio in the coincident gamma-ray spectra improves more than 3 times.

Abstract

The neutron-rich nucleus 117Rh was synthesized in the fission of a relativistic 238U beam produced at the GSI laboratory in Darmstadt, Germany. An isomeric state with t1/2=138(17) ns decaying by a single γ ray was observed, providing the first information on the excited states in this nucleus. The experimental data are discussed in terms of systematics and interpreted by using the Woods-Saxon deformed shell model and triaxial-rotor-plus-particle calculations. The origin of the isomer is explained as being due to a hindered E2 transition to the ground state.
