This chapter explores and addresses the current status of the professorship in higher education. The authors explore how the prestige of the professorship has dwindled and as a result has changed the overall trajectory of the professor as an active and ongoing integral part that is the essential essence of the academy. This chapter picks up from the research article initially published by Mutisya and Osler in 2014 as well as the work published by the same two authors in 2013. The 2013 article involved an in-depth analysis on the professorate from a diverse number of currently employed professors. The research ultimately addressed the need for a “Conceptual Framework for Faculty as Academic Leaders in the Academy.” This chapter extends the initial research into an active discourse on current problems facing the professorate and solutions that can be enacted to reclaim the lost prestige and authority that the position of professor once had in higher education.

Trauma affects many children in various ways globally. According to SAMHSA (2017), the “occurrence of child trauma is very prevalent, and 75% of children reported experiencing at least one traumatic event by age 16”. Traumatic events consist of “psychological, physical, or sexual abuse; community or school violence; witnessing or experiencing domestic violence; national disasters or terrorism; commercial sexual exploitation; sudden or violent loss of a loved one; refugee or war experiences; military family-related stressors; physical or sexual assault; neglect; and serious accidents or life-threatening illness” (SAMHSA, 2017). This literature review evaluates three different attachment-based, trauma-informed interventions for young children 0-7 years of age which are: Attachment and Bio-Behavioral Catchup (ABC), Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), and Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). Throughout this review, childhood trauma will be defined, and the current occurrence rates will be discussed. Furthermore, the descriptions of the above therapies, clinical trials, and research findings will be examined, and a discussion of the literature review findings will follow.

Social work practitioners must utilize evidenced-based practices to assist their clients with various mental health, substance use, and other phases of life issues.“During the past 10 to 15 years, there has been an increased focus in the behavioral health community on delivering what is known as Evidence-Based Practice (EBP)”(Surface, 2009, para. 1). While there is no one size fit all evidenced based practice that will help all clients, most social workers are looking for an effective evidenced-based practice that will allow them to assist a large number of clients with various life experiences and concerns. This paper will discuss the benefits and effectiveness of utilizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in social work practice.

Group work is fundamental to working with youth learning about independent living and in making the tough and challenging transition to independence. The authors, seasoned and experienced group workers and researchers with youth leaving the child welfare system, will present a conceptual framework and set of practices for helping youth gain those life skills essential to effective transition and independence. The article addresses key concepts such as life skills, the nature of transition, and independence, its requirements and its support. The article also examines theoretical perspectives that support the acquisition of life skills including social learning and self-efficacy and modes of learning (e.g., visual, dialogic, problem solving, experiential, and didactic).

The X-ray crystal structures were solved for complexes with Torpedo californica acetylcholinesterase of two bivalent tacrine derivative compounds in which the two tacrine rings were separated by 5- and 7-carbon spacers. The derivative with the 7-carbon spacer spans the length of the active-site gorge, making sandwich interactions with aromatic residues both in the catalytic anionic site (Trp84 and Phe330) at the bottom of the gorge and at the peripheral anionic site near its mouth (Tyr70 and Trp279). The derivative with the 5-carbon spacer interacts in a similar manner at the bottom of the gorge, but the shorter tether precludes a sandwich interaction at the peripheral anionic site. Although the upper tacrine group does interact with Trp279, it displaces the phenyl residue of Phe331, thus causing a major rearrangement in the Trp279-Ser291 loop. The ability of this inhibitor to induce large-scale structural changes in the active-site gorge of acetylcholinesterase has significant implications for structure-based drug design because such conformational changes in the target enzyme are difficult to predict and to model.

The history of social work education is replete with accounts of how the early charity organizations influenced its development. For example, Toynbee Hall in London inspired the founding of Hull House in Chicago as well as the London Charity Organization, the Women’s University Settlement, and the National Union of Women Workers. In addition, Octavia Hill established one of the first training programs in social work education that emphasized the principles for helping impoverished clients. The program was later expanded in 1890 into a one-year program of courses and supervised practice. Later, the program expanded to outlying areas and provinces and eventually evolved into two-year programs of study at the London School of Sociology Defining today’s baccalaureate social workers as entry-level professionals is indeed a paradigm shift. Tracy Whitaker, Toby Weismiller, and Elizabeth Clark stated in their 2006 work, “Clearly, the social work profession is at a crossroad. If there are to be adequate numbers of social workers to respond to the needs of clients in the 21st century and beyond, the sufficiency of this frontline workforce, must not only be ensured, it must be prioritized.” In our ever-changing society, the social work profession must rethink the various levels of the profession and recognize, as well as promote, a professional career trajectory that embraces the baccalaureate social work professional. Administrators and faculty of each social work program are responsible for ensuring that students are competent, and that they possess skill sets that will elevate their marketable in a competitive workforce. Recruiting new social workers, replacing retiring social workers, and retaining social workers in the profession are all needed.

A mild and convenient approach to the synthesis of title compounds (III) and (IX) is based on Pd-catalyzed amination of heteroaryl chlorides with primary amines.

A reliable Pd-catalyzed amination protocol is described for the synthesis of N-alkyltacrines and analogues. The Josiphos ligand CyPFtBu was found to provide optimum yields: 16 examples are given. Compared to the typical high-temperature nucleophilic aromatic substitution (NAS) routes, Pd-catalyzed aminations proceed at significantly lower reaction temperatures, and enable the synthesis of otherwise inaccessible products.

The death of an individual on a military installation often raises the question of who has the authority to investigate that death and perform an autopsy. The answer to this question depends upon whether jurisdiction is exclusively federal or is shared by the state and federal governments. Jurisdiction can be determined by contacting the installation's Directorate of Engineering and Housing or the legal office. When there is exclusive federal jurisdiction, the installation commander or the Armed Forces Medical Examiner may authorize an autopsy on a military member. Under certain conditions, the installation commander may authorize an autopsy on a civilian, especially where a legitimate connection exists between that civilian and the federal government. When jurisdiction is concurrent (that is, shared by the state and federal governments), the civilian medical examiner may waive jurisdiction to the military, but only as to the death of a military member. The authority to investigate the death of a civilian (whether a military dependent or not), to include autopsy examination, is exclusively civilian when jurisdiction is concurrent. Overseas locations are controlled by special agreements that in general, give the U.S. government jurisdiction over military members, their dependents, and U.S. civilian components of the assigned force.

Candidate models for the Definitive Geomagnetic Reference Field 1985 (DGRF-85) and the 1990 International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF-90) have been produced jointly by the British Geological Survey and the United States Naval Oceanographic Office as part of their respective World Magnetic Modeling and Charting programs which are sponsored by the British Hydrographic Office and by the United States Defense Mapping Agency. These models are based on spherical harmonic expansions of the geomagnetic field to degree 10 (120 coefficients) for the main field and degree 8 (80 coefficients) for the secular variation. They are presented here along with a discussion of the data and modeling techniques that were used to produce them.

The authority to conduct a death investigation, including an autopsy examination, on a military installation depends upon the type of jurisdiction on the installation and the decedent's military connection. Exclusive federal jurisdiction gives the military authority to investigate deaths of active duty military members and, under specific conditions, of civilians with a military connection. Concurrent or shared jurisdiction gives the local civilian medical examiner the right of first refusal as to military members. Thus, the civilian medical examiner may waive jurisdiction to the military. This is not the case when a civilian dies under the same circumstances.

The authors examine the relationship between 94-GHz backscatter from snow cover and the properties of the snow, using statistical analysis of observations made in West Germany in 1986. For terrain covered by dry snow, 94-GHz backscatter does not appear to depend significantly on any of the measured snow properties. Backscatter from wet snow is found to be sensitive to volumetric liquid water content, with the dependence inverse-exponential in form. Backscatter from wet snow is also found to depend on surface roughness, especially the cross-polarized return. Comparison of the 1986 data with similar data obtained in 1984 shows two major disagreements in the response of the vertical transmit vertical receive polarization backscattering coefficient to wet snow surface roughness, and the response of cross-polarized. Although model results indicate that microwave backscatter and emission from snowcover should depend on dry-snow grain size and wet-snow surface roughness, there has been little or no experimental verification. In this paper, helicopter-mounted radar measure-ade ments of 94-GHz backscatter from snowcover, and ground-truth measurements of snow surface roughness, wetness, grain size, and porosity, are analyzed. For each of six polarization combinations, and separately for dry snow and wet snow, spatial mean values of the backscatter coefficient σ° are fit to linear combinations of the cosine of incidence angle and the snow variables, the latter in the order in which the explained variance in is most increased, provided the increase is significant. However, the significance of an included snow variable is considered questionable if the predicted response of to that variable is small compared with the spatial standard deviations of or (typically 4-5 dB). This is the case for dry-snow grain size, porosity, and for some polarization combinations, wetness. Only the response to wet-snow surface roughness is consistently comparable in magnitude to the standard deviations of σ°. Dry-snow surface roughness, wet-snow grain size, and for most polarization combinations, porosity, made no significant improvement to the explained variances. An examination of residuals shows that the linear model is adequate for the response to cosine of incidence angle and snow surface roughness.

In the above mentioned paper (ibid., vol.26, no.3, May 1988) the exponential coefficients of percent liquid water content V/sub W/ in Table II are too large in magnitude by a factor of 10 (i.e. -0.990 should be -0.0990, etc.). >
