Abstract: International audience, Game semantics is a valuable source of fully abstract models of programming languages or proof theories based on categories of so-called games and strategies. However, there are many variants of this technique, whose interrelationships largely remain to be elucidated. This raises the question: what is a category of games and strategies? Our central idea, taken from the first author's PhD thesis, is that positions and moves in a game should be morphisms in a base category: playing move m in position f consists in factoring f through m, the new position being the other factor. Accordingly, we provide a general construction which, from a selection of "legal moves" in an almost arbitrary category, produces a category of games and strategies, together with subcategories of deterministic and winning strategies. As our running example, we instantiate our construction to obtain the standard category of Hyland-Ong games subject to the switching condition. The extension of our framework to games without the switching condition is handled in the first author's PhD thesis.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a controllability method for the numerical solution of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in their first-order formulation. By minimizing a quadratic cost functional, which measures the deviation from periodicity, the controllability method determines iteratively a periodic solution in the time domain. At each conjugate gradient iteration, the gradient of the cost functional is simply computed by running any time-dependent simulation code forward and backward for one period, thus leading to a non-intrusive implementation easily integrated into existing software. Moreover, the proposed algorithm automatically inherits the parallelism, scalability, and low memory footprint of the underlying time-domain solver. Since the time-periodic solution obtained by minimization is not necessarily unique, we apply a cheap post-processing filtering procedure which recovers the time-harmonic solution from any minimizer. Finally, we present a series of numerical examples which show that our algorithm greatly speeds up the convergence towards the desired time-harmonic solution when compared to simply running the time-marching code until the time-harmonic regime is eventually reached.

Abstract: We consider residual-based a posteriori error estimators for Galerkin-type discretizations of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations. We focus on configurations where the frequency is high, or close to a resonance frequency, and derive reliability and efficiency estimates. In contrast to previous related works, our estimates are frequency-explicit. In particular, our key contribution is to show that even if the constants appearing in the reliability and efficiency estimates may blow up on coarse meshes, they become independent of the frequency for sufficiently refined meshes. Such results were previously known for the Helmholtz equation describing scalar wave propagation problems and we show that they naturally extend, at the price of many technicalities in the proofs, to Maxwell's equations. Our mathematical analysis is performed in the 3D case, and covers conforming N\'ed\'elec discretizations of the first and second family, as well as first-order (and hybridizable) discontinuous Galerkin schemes. We also present numerical experiments in the 2D case, where Maxwell's equations are discretized with N\'ed\'elec elements of the first family. These illustrating examples perfectly fit our key theoretical findings, and suggest that our estimates are sharp.

Abstract: In this paper, we study a regularization of a scalar conservation law (SCL), which is obtained by modifying its Lagrangian. This regularization is parameterized by $\ell$ and conserves formally an $H^1$-like energy. Proof of the existence of local smooth solutions are given in this paper. In addition, we prove the existence of global weak solutions satisfying a uniform (on $\ell$) one-sided Oleinik inequality for this regularization, and also for a generalized Hunter--Saxton equation. Moreover, when $\ell \to 0$ (resp. $\ell \to \infty$), we prove that the solutions of the regularized equation converge up to a subsequence to $u_0$ (resp.$ u^\infty$) a solution of the SCL (resp. a generalized Hunter--Saxton equation), at least before the appearance of singularities.

Abstract: International audience; We introduce a deep latent recommender system named deepLTRS in order to provide users with high quality recommendations based on observed user ratings \textit{and} texts of product reviews. The underlying motivation is that, when a user scores only a few products, the texts used in the reviews represent a significant source of information, thereby enhancing the predictive ability of the model. Our approach adopts a variational auto-encoder (VAE) architecture as a deep generative latent model for an ordinal matrix encoding ratings and a document-term matrix encoding the reviews. Taking into account both matrices as model inputs, deepLTRS uses a neural network to capture the relationship between latent factors and latent topics. Moreover, a user-majoring encoder and a product-majoring encoder are constructed to jointly capture user and product preferences. Due to the specificity of the model structure, an original row-column alternated mini-batch optimization algorithm is proposed to deal with user-product dependencies and computational burden. Numerical experiments on simulated and real-world data sets demonstrate that deepLTRS outperforms the state-of-the-art, in particular in context of extreme data sparsity.

Abstract: International audience; Problems with sign-changing coefficients occur, for instance, in the study of transmission problems with metamaterials. In this work, we present and analyze a generalized finite element method in the spirit of the Localized Orthogonal Decomposition, that is especially efficient when the negative and positive materials exhibit multiscale features. We derive optimal linear convergence in the energy norm independently of the potentially low regularity of the exact solution. Numerical experiments illustrate the theoretical convergence rates and show the applicability of the method for a large class of sign-changing diffusion problems.

Abstract: Count data is becoming more and more ubiquitous in a wide range of applications, with datasets growing both in size and in dimension. In this context, an increasing amount of work is dedicated to the construction of statistical models directly accounting for the discrete nature of the data. Moreover, it has been shown that integrating dimension reduction to clustering can drastically improve performance and stability. In this paper, we rely on the mixture of multinomial PCA, a mixture model for the clustering of count data, also known as the probabilistic clustering-projection model in the literature. Related to the latent Dirichlet allocation model, it offers the flexibility of topic modeling while being able to assign each observation to a unique cluster. We introduce a greedy clustering algorithm, where inference and clustering are jointly done by mixing a classification variational expectation maximization algorithm, with a branch & bound like strategy on a variational lower bound. An integrated classification likelihood criterion is derived for model selection, and a thorough study with numerical experiments is proposed to assess both the performance and robustness of the method. Finally, we illustrate the qualitative interest of the latter in a real-world application, for the clustering of anatomopathological medical reports, in partnership with expert practitioners from the Institut Curie hospital., 34 pages, 11 figures, published in : Computational Statistics

Abstract: International audience; We analyze the stability of a linearized hydrodynamical model describing the response of nanometric dispersive metallic materials illuminated by optical light waves that is the situation occurring in nanoplasmonics. This model corresponds to the coupling between the Maxwell system and a PDE describing the evolution of the polarization current of the electrons in the metal. We show the well posedness of the system, polynomial stability and optimal energy decay rate. We also investigate the numerical stability for a discontinuous Galerkin type approximation and several explicit time integration schemes..

Abstract: International audience; This paper is about the co-clustering of ordinal data. Such data are very common on e-commerce platforms where customers rank the products/services they bought. More in details, we focus on arrays of ordinal (possibly missing) data involving two disjoint sets of individuals/objects corresponding to the rows/columns of the arrays. Typically, an observed entry (i, j) in the array is an ordinal score assigned by the individual/row i to the object/column j. A generative model for arrays of ordinal data is introduced along with an inference algorithm for parameters estimation. The model relies on latent continuous random variables and the fitting allows to simultaneously co-cluster the rows and columns of an array. The estimation of the model parameters is performed via a classification expectation maximization (C-EM) algorithm. A model selection criterion is formally obtained to select the number of row and column clusters. In order to show that our approach reaches and often outperforms the state of the art, we carry out numerical experiments on synthetic data. Finally, applications on real datasets highlight the model capacity to deal with very sparse arrays.

Under the idealized assumption that the local problems defining the multiscale basis functions are exactly solved, we prove that the equivalence holds for general polytopal (coarse) meshes and arbitrary approximation orders. We also leverage the interchange of properties to perform a unified convergence analysis, as well as to improve on both methods.

Abstract: International audience; The limiting amplitude principle states that the response of a scatterer to a harmonic light excitation is asymptotically harmonic with the same pulsation. Depending on the geometry and nature of the scatterer, there might or might not be an established theoretical proof validating this principle. In this paper, we investigate a case where the theory is missing: we consider a two-dimensional dispersive Drude structure with corners. In the non lossy case, it is well known that looking for harmonic solutions leads to an ill-posed problem for a specific range of critical pulsations, characterized by the metal’s properties and the aperture of the corners. Ill-posedness is then due to highly oscillatory resonances at the corners called black-hole waves. However, a time-domain formulation with a harmonic excitation is always mathematically valid. Based on this observation, we conjecture that the limiting amplitude principle might not hold for all pulsations. Using a time-domain setting, we propose a systematic numerical approach that allows to give numerical evidences of the latter conjecture, and find clear signature of the critical pulsa-tions. Furthermore, we connect our results to the underlying physical plasmonic resonances thatoccur in the lossy physical metallic case.

Abstract: International audience We derive results on equivalence of piecewise polynomial approximations of a given function in the Sobolev space H(curl). We namely show that the global-best approximation of a given H(curl) function in a H(curl)-conforming piecewise polynomial space imposing the continuity of the tangential trace can be bounded above and below by the Hilbertian sum of the respective local approximations from the elementwise spaces without any inter-element continuity requirement. In other words, the approximation of a H(curl) function by tangential-trace-continuous and discontinuous piecewise polynomials has comparable precision. We consider approximations of the curl of the target function in the L 2-norm, as well as approximations of the target function in the L 2-norm with a constraint on the curl; in the latter case, the constraint is removed in the local approximations. These best-approximation localizations hold under the minimal H(curl) regularity, on arbitrary shape-regular tetrahedral meshes, and involve imposition of conditions on a part of the boundary. They extend to the H(curl) context some recent results from the H 1 and H(div) spaces and have direct applications to a priori and a posteriori error analysis of numerical discretizations related to the H(curl) space, namely the Maxwell equations.

Abstract: International audience; The well-known tree-cotree gauging method for low-order edge finite elements is extended to high-order approximations within the first family of Nédélec finite element spaces. The key point in this method is the identification of degrees of freedom for edge and nodal finite element spaces such that the matrix of the gradient operator is the transposed of the all-node incidence matrix of a directed graph. This is straightforward for low-order finite elements and it can be proved that it is still possible in the high-order case using either moments or weights as degrees of freedom. In the case of weights, the geometrical realization of the graph associated with the gradient operator is very natural. We recall in details the definition of weights and present an algorithm for the construction of a spanning tree of this graph. The starting point of the algorithm is a spanning tree of the graph given by vertices and edges of the mesh (the so-called global spanning tree, that is the one used in the low-order case). This global step, interpreted in the high-order sense, is enriched locally, with a loop over the elements of the mesh, with arcs corresponding to edge, face and volume degrees of freedom required in the high-order case.

Abstract: We wish to compute numerically the equilibrium for a hot plasma in a tokamak. For such a problem in an axisymmetric configuration, we present a non-overlapping mortar element approach, that couples piece-wise linear finite elements in a region that does not contain the plasma and reduced Hsieh-Clough-Tocher finite elements elsewhere, to approximate the magnetic flux field on a triangular mesh of the poloidal tokamak section. This approach has the flexibility to achieve easily and at low cost higher order regularity for the approximation of the flux function in the domain covered by the plasma, while preserving accurate meshing of the geometric details in the rest of the computational domain and simplifying the inclusion of ferromagnetic parts.

Abstract: We study extensions of piecewise polynomial data prescribed in a patch of tetrahedra sharing an edge. We show stability in the sense that the minimizers over piecewise polynomial spaces with prescribed tangential component jumps across faces and prescribed piecewise curl in elements are subordinate in the broken energy norm to the minimizers over the broken H ( curl ) \boldsymbol H(\boldsymbol {\operatorname {curl}}) space with the same prescriptions. Our proofs are constructive and yield constants independent of the polynomial degree. We then detail the application of this result to the a posteriori error analysis of the curl–curl problem discretized with Nédélec finite elements of arbitrary order. The resulting estimators are reliable, locally efficient, polynomial-degree-robust, and inexpensive. They are constructed by a broken patchwise equilibration which, in particular, does not produce a globally H ( curl ) \boldsymbol H(\boldsymbol {\operatorname {curl}}) -conforming flux. The equilibration is only related to edge patches and can be realized without solutions of patch problems by a sweep through tetrahedra around every mesh edge. The error estimates become guaranteed when the regularity pick-up constant is explicitly known. Numerical experiments illustrate the theoretical findings.

Abstract: We consider the scalar Helmholtz equation with variable, discontinuous coefficients, modelling transmission of acoustic waves through an anisotropic penetrable obstacle. We first prove a well-posedness result and a frequency-explicit bound on the solution operator, with both valid for sufficiently-large frequency and for a class of coefficients that satisfy certain monotonicity conditions in one spatial direction, and are only assumed to be bounded (i.e., $L^\infty$) in the other spatial directions. This class of coefficients therefore includes coefficients modelling transmission by penetrable obstacles with a (potentially large) number of layers (in 2-d) or fibres (in 3-d). Importantly, the frequency-explicit bound holds uniformly for all coefficients in this class; this uniformity allows us to consider highly-oscillatory coefficients and study the limiting behaviour when the period of oscillations goes to zero. In particular, we bound the $H^1$ error committed by the first-order bulk correction to the homogenized transmission problem, with this bound explicit in both the period of oscillations of the coefficients and the frequency of the Helmholtz equation; to our knowledge, this is the first homogenization result for the Helmholtz equation that is explicit in these two quantities and valid without the assumption that the frequency is small.

Abstract: A well-coordinated control of plasma profiles and key integrated quantities allows to access a desired plasma scenario and to maintain its stationarity. This feature is crucial for the future fusion reactors, but also for those present experiments whose pulse budget is constrained by hard operational limits, like the neutron production or T inventory. This work presents the brand-new RAPTOR suite of codes, which has been developed for JET to combine real-time model-based predictions of the plasma state with the available diagnostic measurements. The suite embeds: an upgraded version of the equilibrium reconstruction EQUINOX code [J. Blum et al, JCP 231 (2012) 960-980], which constraints the equilibrium with both magnetics and pola-interferometric data; the brand-new FLUXMAP tool, which maps the diagnostic profiles from geometric to normalized magnetic flux coordinates; the TRANSP-benchmarked RABBIT code [M. Weiland et al, Nucl. Fusion 58 (2018) 082032], which reconstructs the depositions of the neutral beam heating, current drive and fast ion deposition but also the neutron rate; and the state-observer RAPTOR code [F. Felici et al. Nuclear Fusion 51(8) (2011) 083052], which combines the output from all these codes with a 1D transport code [F. Felici et.al, Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion 54(2) (2012) p.025002]. The suite is both implemented in MATLAB/Simulink® and it is being integrated in the C++ real-time MARTe2 [https://vcis.f4e.europa.eu/marte2-docs/master/html/index.html] framework. Thanks to its user-friendly interfaces, which are based on the MDSplus [J. Stillerman et al, Fus. Eng. Des. 43 3-4, (1999) 301-308] I/O and visualization tools, the RAPTORsuite can be used both offline, for a fast reconstruction of the plasma state, and in integrated control algorithms once it will be deployed in the JET real-time data network.

Abstract: Algorithms involving Gaussian processes or determinantal point processes typically require computing the determinant of a kernel matrix. Frequently, the latter is computed from the Cholesky decomposition, an algorithm of cubic complexity in the size of the matrix. We show that, under mild assumptions, it is possible to estimate the determinant from only a sub-matrix, with probabilistic guarantee on the relative error. We present an augmentation of the Cholesky decomposition that stops under certain conditions before processing the whole matrix. Experiments demonstrate that this can save a considerable amount of time while having an overhead of less than $5\%$ when not stopping early. More generally, we present a probabilistic stopping strategy for the approximation of a sum of known length where addends are revealed sequentially. We do not assume independence between addends, only that they are bounded from below and decrease in conditional expectation.

Abstract: The performance of modern algorithms on certain computer vision tasks such as object recognition is now close to that of humans. This success was achieved at the price of complicated architectures depending on millions of parameters and it has become quite challenging to understand how particular predictions are made. Interpretability methods propose to give us this understanding. In this paper, we study LIME, perhaps one of the most popular. On the theoretical side, we show that when the number of generated examples is large, LIME explanations are concentrated around a limit explanation for which we give an explicit expression. We further this study for elementary shape detectors and linear models. As a consequence of this analysis, we uncover a connection between LIME and integrated gradients, another explanation method. More precisely, the LIME explanations are similar to the sum of integrated gradients over the superpixels used in the preprocessing step of LIME., 30 pages, 13 figures, accepted to ICML 2021

Abstract: International audience; We propose and analyze non-overlapping Schwarz algorithms for the domain decomposition of the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes problem with Discrete Duality Finite Volume (DDFV) discretization. The design of suitable transmission conditions for the velocity and the pressure is a crucial issue. We establish the well-posedness of the method and the convergence of the iterative process, pointing out how the numerical fluxes influence the asymptotic problem which is intended to be a discretization of the Navier–Stokes equations on the entire computational domain. Finally we numerically illustrate the behavior and performances of the algorithm. We discuss on numerical grounds the impact of the parameters for several mesh geometries and we perform simulations of the flow past an obstacle with several domains.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we propose a fluctuation splitting finite volume scheme for a non-conservative modeling of shear shallow water flow (SSWF). This model was originally proposed by Teshukov (2007) in [14] and was extended to include modeling of friction by Gavrilyuk et al. (2018) in [7]. The directional splitting scheme proposed by Gavrilyuk et al. (2018) in [7] is tricky to apply on unstructured grids. Our scheme is based on the physical splitting in which we separate the characteristic waves of the model to form two different hyperbolic subsystems. The fluctuations associated with each subsystems are computed by developing Riemann solvers for these subsystems in a local coordinate system. These fluctuations enables us to develop a Godunov-type scheme that can be easily applied on mixed/unstructured grids. While the equation of energy conservation is solved along with the SSWF model in Gavrilyuk et al. (2018)[7], in this paper we solve only SSWF model equations. We develop a cell-centered finite volume code to validate the proposed scheme with the help of some numerical tests. As expected, the scheme shows first order convergence. The numerical simulation of 1D roll waves shows a good agreement with the experimental results. The numerical simulations of 2D roll waves show similar transverse wave structures as observed by Gavrilyuk et al. (2018) in [7].

Abstract: International audience We present a local construction of H(curl)-conforming piecewise polynomials satisfying a prescribed curl constraint. We start from a piecewise polynomial not contained in the H(curl) space but satisfying a suitable orthogonality property. The procedure employs minimizations in vertex patches and the outcome is, up to a generic constant independent of the underlying polynomial degree, as accurate as the best-approximations over the entire local versions of H(curl). This allows to design guaranteed, fully computable, constant-free, and polynomial-degree-robust a posteriori error estimates of Prager-Synge type for Nédélec finite element approximations of the curl-curl problem. A divergence-free decomposition of a divergence-free H(div)-conforming piecewise polynomial, relying on over-constrained minimizations in Raviart-Thomas spaces, is the key ingredient. Numerical results illustrate the theoretical developments.

Abstract: When a missing process depends on the missing values themselves, it needs to be explicitly modelled and taken into account while doing likelihood-based inference. We present an approach for building and fitting deep latent variable models (DLVMs) in cases where the missing process is dependent on the missing data. Specifically, a deep neural network enables us to flexibly model the conditional distribution of the missingness pattern given the data. This allows for incorporating prior information about the type of missingness (e.g. self-censoring) into the model. Our inference technique, based on importance-weighted variational inference, involves maximising a lower bound of the joint likelihood. Stochastic gradients of the bound are obtained by using the reparameterisation trick both in latent space and data space. We show on various kinds of data sets and missingness patterns that explicitly modelling the missing process can be invaluable., Camera-ready version for ICLR 2021

Abstract: International audience We propose a novel a posteriori error estimator for conforming finite element discretizations of two- and three-dimensional Helmholtz problems.The estimator is based on an equilibrated flux that is computed by solving patchwise mixed finite element problems. We show that the estimator is reliable up to a prefactor that tends to one with mesh refinement or with polynomial degree increase. We also derive a fully computable upper bound on the prefactor for several common settings of domains and boundary conditions. This leads to a guaranteed estimate without any assumption on the mesh size or the polynomial degree, though the obtained guaranteed bound may lead to large error overestimation. We next demonstrate that the estimator is locally efficient, robust in all regimes with respect to the polynomial degree, and asymptotically robust with respect to the wavenumber. Finally we present numerical experiments that illustrate our analysis and indicate that our theoretical results are sharp.

Abstract: Recently, learning only from ordinal information of the type “itemxis closer to itemythan to itemz” has received increasing attention in the machine learning community. Such triplet comparisons are particularly well suited for learning from crowdsourced human intelligence tasks, in which workers make statements about the relative distances in a triplet of items. In this paper, we systematically investigate comparison-based centrality measures on triplets and theoretically analyze their underlying Euclidean notion of centrality. Two such measures already appear in the literature under opposing approaches, and we propose a third measure, which is a natural compromise between these two. We further discuss their relation to statistical depth functions, which comprise desirable properties for centrality measures, and conclude with experiments on real and synthetic datasets for medoid estimation and outlier detection.

Abstract: International audience; Dictionary learning is a key tool for representation learning, that explains the data as linear combination of few basic elements. Yet, this analysis is not amenable in the context of graph learning, as graphs usually belong to different metric spaces. We fill this gap by proposing a new online Graph Dictionary Learning approach, which uses the Gromov Wasserstein divergence for the data fitting term. In our work, graphs are encoded through their nodes’ pairwise relations and modeled as convex combination of graph atoms, i.e. dictionary elements, estimated thanks to an online stochastic algorithm, which operates on a dataset of unregistered graphs with potentially different number of nodes. Our approach naturally extends to labeled graphs, and is completed by a novel upper bound that can be used as a fast approximation of Gromov Wasserstein in the embedding space. We provide numerical evidences showing the interest of our approach for unsupervised embedding of graph datasets and for online graph subspace estimation and tracking.

Abstract: We investigate the existence and stability of ground states for a model coupling the Schrödinger equation to the wave equation in transverse directions. The model is intended to describe complex interactions between quantum particles and their environment. The result can be interpreted as a dissipation statement, induced by the energy exchanges with the environment. The proofs use either concentration-compactness arguments or spectral analysis of the linearized energy. Difficulties arise related to the fact the model does not satisfy scale invariance properties.

Abstract: In order to simulate a full tokamak discharge, a fast integrated tokamak modeling tool for scenario design, METIS, is coupled with a quasi-static free-boundary magnetic equilibrium code, FEEQS. The first code is able to compute at each time the plasma equilibrium, the current density and plasma pressure profiles. The generated outputs are iteratively used by the second code that computes the poloidal field coils currents needed in order to obtain a given plasma shape. This is used to assess the feasibility of scenarios designed by integrated modeling simulations. This approach is much faster with respect to full simulators, equipped with specific feedback controllers, and can be regarded as complementary or preparatory to much more time-consuming scenario control optimisation. The results obtained with the equilibrium code are benchmarked with data already available and computed using the TOSCA code. To illustrate how the coupled codes work, the optimization of one of the reference scenarios of the JT-60SA tokamak is carried out. The use of this new simulation tool for tokamak scenario design is discussed.

Abstract: Strictly hyperbolic triangular systems with a decoupled nonlinear conservation law and a coupled ``linear'' transport equation with a discontinuous velocity are known to create measure solutions for the initial value problem. Adding a uniform strictly hyperbolic assumption on such systems we are able to obtain bounded solutions in $L^\infty$ under optimal fractional $BV$ regularity of the initial data. The Pressure Swing Adsorption process (PSA) [16] is an example coming from chemistry which, after a change of variables from Euler to Lagrange, has such a triangular structure. Here, we provide global weak $L^\infty$ entropy solutions in the framework of fractional $BV$ spaces: $BV^s$, $ 1/ 3 < s < 1$, when the zero set of the second derivative of the decoupled flux is locally finite. In addition, for some initial data not in $BV^{1/3}$, a blow-up in $L^\infty$ may occur.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents an extension of Discrete Fracture Matrix (DFM) models to com-positional two-phase Darcy flow accounting for phase transitions and Fickian diffusion. The hybrid-dimensional model is based on nonlinear transmission conditions at matrix fracture (mf) interfaces designed to be consistent with the physical processes. They account in particular for the saturation jump induced by the different rock types, for the Fickian diffusion in the fracture width, as well as for the thermodynamical equilibrium formulated by complementary constraints. The model is validated by numerical comparison with a reference equi-dimensional model using a TPFA approximation in space and a fully implicit Euler time integration. It is also compared with the usual approach based on an harmonic averaging of the transmissivities at mf interfaces combined with a two-point upwinding of the mobilities jumping over the mf interfaces. Our approach is shown to provide basically the same accuracy than the equi-dimensional model as opposed to the classical harmonic averaging approach which is shown to exhibit physical inconsistency. It is then applied to simulate the desaturation by suction at the interface between a fractured Callovo-Oxfordian argilite storage rock and a ventilation tunnel with data set provided by Andra.

Abstract: The paper deals with the dynamics of conservative \begin{document}$ N $\end{document}-degree-of-freedom vibro-impact systems involving one unilateral contact condition and a linear free flow. Among all possible trajectories, grazing orbits exhibit a contact occurrence with vanishing incoming velocity which generates mathematical difficulties. Such problems are commonly tackled through the definition of a Poincaré section and the attendant First Return Map. It is known that the First Return Time to the Poincaré section features a square-root singularity near grazing. In this work, a non-orthodox yet natural and intrinsic Poincaré section is chosen to revisit the square-root singularity. It is based on the unilateral condition but is not transverse to the grazing orbits. A detailed investigation of the proposed Poincaré section is provided. Higher-order singularities in the First Return Time are exhibited. Also, activation coefficients of the square-root singularity for the First Return Map are defined. For the linear and periodic grazing orbits from which bifurcate nonlinear modes, one of these coefficients is necessarily non-vanishing. The present work is a step towards the stability analysis of grazing orbits, which still stands as an open problem.

Abstract: We introduce two a posteriori error estimators for N\'ed\'elec finite element discretizations of the curl-curl problem. These estimators pertain to a new Prager-Synge identity and an associated equilibration procedure. They are reliable and efficient, and the error estimates are polynomial-degree-robust. In addition, when the domain is convex, the reliability constants are fully computable. The proposed error estimators are also cheap and easy to implement, as they are computed by solving divergence-constrained minimization problems over edge patches. Numerical examples highlight our key findings, and show that both estimators are suited to drive adaptive refinement algorithms. Besides, these examples seem to indicate that guaranteed upper bounds can be achieved even in non-convex domains.

Abstract: Finding a set of nested partitions of a dataset is useful to uncover relevant structure at different scales, and is often dealt with a data-dependent methodology. In this paper, we introduce a general two-step methodology for model-based hierarchical clustering. Considering the integrated classification likelihood criterion as an objective function, this work applies to every discrete latent variable models (DLVMs) where this quantity is tractable. The first step of the methodology involves maximizing the criterion with respect to the partition. Addressing the known problem of sub-optimal local maxima found by greedy hill climbing heuristics, we introduce a new hybrid algorithm based on a genetic algorithm efficiently exploring the space of solutions. The resulting algorithm carefully combines and merges different solutions, and allows the joint inference of the number $K$ of clusters as well as the clusters themselves. Starting from this natural partition, the second step of the methodology is based on a bottom-up greedy procedure to extract a hierarchy of clusters. In a Bayesian context, this is achieved by considering the Dirichlet cluster proportion prior parameter $\alpha$ as a regularization term controlling the granularity of the clustering. A new approximation of the criterion is derived as a log-linear function of $\alpha$, enabling a simple functional form of the merge decision criterion. This second step allows the exploration of the clustering at coarser scales. The proposed approach is compared with existing strategies on simulated as well as real settings, and its results are shown to be particularly relevant. Abstract: International audience; We recall the classical tree-cotree technique in magnetostatics. (1) We extend it in the frame of high-order finite elements in general domains. (2) We focus on its connection with the question of the invertibility of the final algebraic system arising from a high-order edge finite element discretization of the magnetostatic problem formulated in terms of the magnetic vector potential. With the same purpose of invertibility, we analyse another classically used condition, the Coulomb gauge. (3) We conclude by underlying that the two gauges can be naturally considered in a high order framework without any restriction on the topology of the domain.

Abstract: International audience; Recently, a Hamiltonian regularised shallow water (Saint-Venant) system has been introduced by Clamond and Dutykh. This system is Galilean invariant, linearly non-dispersive and conserves formally an $H^1$-like energy. In this paper, we generalise this regularisation for the barotropic Euler system preserving the same properties. We prove the local (in time) well-posedness of the regularised barotropic Euler system and a periodic generalised two-component Hunter-Saxton system. We also show for both systems that if singularities appear in finite time, they are necessary in the first derivatives.

Abstract: International audience We prove that the minimizer in the Nédélec polynomial space of some degree p ≥ 0 of a discrete minimization problem performs as well as the continuous minimizer in H(curl), up to a constant that is independent of the polynomial degree p. The minimization problems are posed for fields defined on a single non-degenerate tetrahedron in R 3 with polynomial constraints enforced on the curl of the field and its tangential trace on some faces of the tetrahedron. This result builds upon [L. Demkowicz, J. Gopalakrishnan, J. Schöberl, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 47 (2009), 3293-3324] and [M. Costabel, A. McIntosh, Math. Z. 265 (2010), 297-320] and is a fundamental ingredient to build polynomial-degree-robust a posteriori error estimators when approximating the Maxwell equations in several regimes leading to a curl-curl problem.

Abstract: This thesis participates in the development of advanced numerical methods to simulate plasma instabilities for fusion by magnetic confinement in tokamaks. These flows are described in a general framework by magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) fluid models and can be considered incompressible in some approximations known as reduced MHD models. In this work, the incompressibility constraint is dealt with by the introduction of stream functions. A consequence of this formulation is the appearence of differential terms of order 4 in the equations. The use of C 1 functions is then required to apply the conforming Galerkin finite element method. We have used the the so-called reduced Clough-Tocher(CT) finite element method on general triangulations. The method has been validated on simple problems and then extented to problems relevant for the study of fusion plasmas. First, plasma equilibrium described by the Grad-Shafranov equation, has been investigated. Then we have studied incompressible models in a pure streamfunction formulation. First, we introduced a discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations which constitute a sub-model of the incompressible MHD equations. We have shown the stability in energy of the method and demontrated its performance on some standard test cases. We have then extended this numerical scheme to the incompressible MHD equations. We have also proved the stability in energy of the numerical approach and applied the numerical scheme to the simulation of the well known "tilt instability". In view of the results obtained, the CT method appears to be suitable for the simulation of plasma instabilities described by MHD models. Due to its capability to represent complex geometry, it compares favorably to other numerical methods in term of accuracy, CPU time, memory cost and versatility. jfavorably to other numerical methods in term of accuracy, CPU time, memory cost and versatility.; Cette thèse participe au développement de méthodes numériques avancées pour simuler les instabilités du plasma pour la fusion par confinement magnétique dans les tokamaks. Ces écoulements sont décrits dans un cadre général par des modèles fluides de type magnetohydrodynamique(MHD) et peuvent être considérés comme incompressibles dans certaines approximations connues sous le nom de modèles MHD réduits. Dans ce travail, la contrainte d’incompressibilité est traitée par l’introduction de fonctions de courant. Une conséquence de cette formulation est l’apparition de termes différentiels d’ordre 4 dans les équations. L’utilisation de fonctions C 1 est alors nécessaire pour appliquer la méthode des éléments finis de Galerkin conforme. Nous avons utilisé la méthode des éléments finis dite de Clough Tocher(CT) réduite sur des triangulations générales. La méthode a été validée sur des problèmes simples, puis étendue à des problèmes pertinents pour l’étude des plasmas de fusion. Tout d’abord, l’équilibre des plasmas décrit par l’équation de Grad-Shafranov a été abordé. Ensuite, nous avons étudié des modèles incompressibles dans une formulation fonction de courant pure. Premièrement, nous avons introduit une discrétisation des équations incompressibles de Navier-Stokes qui constituent un sous-modèle des équations de la MHD incompressible. Nous avons montré la stabilité en énergie de la méthode et démontré ses performances sur certains cas tests standards. Nous avons ensuite étendu ce schéma numérique aux équations de la MHD incompressible. Nous avons également démontré la stabilité en énergie de l’approche numérique et appliqué le schéma numérique à la simulation d’un problème d’instabilité du plasma connu sous le nom de "instabilité du tilt".Au vu des résultats obtenus, la méthode CT s’est révélée adaptée à la simulation des instabilités du plasma décrites par les modèles MHD. En raison de sa capacité à représenter des géométries complexes, elle se compare favorablement aux autres méthodes numériques en termes de précision, de temps CPU, de coût mémoire et de la flexibilité.

Abstract: The COVID-19 outbreak has stimulated the interest in the proposal of novel epidemiological models to predict the course of the epidemic so as to help planning effective control strategies. In particular, in order to properly interpret the available data, it has become clear that one must go beyond most classic epidemiological models and consider models that, like the recently proposed SIDARTHE, offer a richer description of the stages of infection. The problem of learning the parameters of these models is of crucial importance especially when assuming that they are time-variant, which further enriches their effectiveness. In this paper we propose a general approach for learning time-variant parameters of dynamic compartmental models from epidemic data. We formulate the problem in terms of a functional risk that depends on the learning variables through the solutions of a dynamic system. The resulting variational problem is then solved by using a gradient flow on a suitable, regularized functional. We forecast the epidemic evolution in Italy and France. Results indicate that the model provides reliable and challenging predictions over all available data as well as the fundamental role of the chosen strategy on the time-variant parameters., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Modern statistical software and machine learning libraries are enabling semi-automated statistical inference. Within this context, it appears easier and easier to try and fit many models to the data at hand, reversing thereby the Fisherian way of conducting science by collecting data after the scientific hypothesis (and hence the model) has been determined. The renewed goal of the statistician becomes to help the practitioner choose within such large and heterogeneous families of models, a task known as model selection. The Bayesian paradigm offers a systematized way of assessing this problem. This approach, launched by Harold Jeffreys in his 1935 book Theory of Probability, has witnessed a remarkable evolution in the last decades, that has brought about several new theoretical and methodological advances. Some of these recent developments are the focus of this survey, which tries to present a unifying perspective on work carried out by different communities. In particular, we focus on non-asymptotic out-of-sample performance of Bayesian model selection and averaging techniques, and draw connections with penalized maximum likelihood. We also describe recent extensions to wider classes of probabilistic frameworks including high-dimensional, unidentifiable, or likelihood-free models.

Abstract: We present a novel postprocessing technique for a discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization of time-dependent Maxwell's equations that we couple with an explicit Runge-Kutta time-marching scheme. The postprocessed electromagnetic field converges one order faster than the unprocessed solution in the H(curl)-norm. The proposed approach is local, in the sense that the enhanced solution is computed independently in each cell of the computational mesh, and at each time step of interest. As a result, it is inexpensive to compute, especially if the region of interest is localized, either in time or space. The key ideas behind this postprocessing technique stem from hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) methods , which are equivalent to the analyzed DG scheme for specific choices of penalization parameters. We present several numerical experiments that highlight the superconvergence properties of the postprocessed electromagnetic field approximation.
