Background Dietary potassium (K+) has emerged as a modifiable factor for cardiovascular and kidney health in the general population, but its role in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is unclear. Here, we hypothesize that CKD increases the susceptibility to the negative effects of low and high K+ diets. Methods We compared the effects of low, normal and high KChloride (KCl) diets and a high KCitrate diet for 4 weeks in male rats with normal kidney function and in male rats with CKD using the 5/6th nephrectomy model (5/6Nx). Results Compared with rats with normal kidney function, 5/6Nx rats on the low KCl diet developed more severe extracellular and intracellular K+ depletion and more severe kidney injury, characterized by nephromegaly, infiltration of T cells and macrophages, decreased estimated glomerular filtration rate and increased albuminuria. The high KCl diet caused hyperkalemia, hyperaldosteronism, hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis and severe hypertension in 5/6Nx but not in sham rats. The high KCitrate diet caused hypochloremic metabolic alkalosis but attenuated hypertension despite higher abundance of the phosphorylated sodium chloride cotransporter (pNCC) and similar levels of plasma aldosterone and epithelial sodium channel abundance. All 5/6Nx groups had more collagen deposition than the sham groups and this effect was most pronounced in the high KCitrate group. Plasma aldosterone correlated strongly with kidney collagen deposition. Conclusions CKD increases the susceptibility to negative effects of low and high K+ diets in male rats, although the injury patterns are different. The low K+ diet caused inflammation, nephromegaly and kidney function decline, whereas the high K+ diet caused hypertension, hyperaldosteronism and kidney fibrosis. High KCitrate attenuated the hypertensive but not the pro-fibrotic effect of high KCl, which may be attributable to K+-induced aldosterone secretion. Identifying farmland use has long been an important topic in large-scale agricultural production management. This study used multi-temporal visible RGB images taken from agricultural areas in Taiwan by UAV to build a model for classifying field types. We combined color and texture features to extract more information from RGB images. The vectorized gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCMv), instead of the common Haralick feature, was used as texture to improve the classification accuracy. To understand whether changes in the appearance of crops at different times affect image features and classification, this study designed a labeling method that combines image acquisition times and land use type to observe it. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm was chosen to build the classifier, and two classical algorithms, the Support Vector Machine and Classification and Regression Tree algorithms, were used for comparison. In the testing results, the highest overall accuracy reached 82%, and the best balance accuracy across categories reached 97%. In our comparison, the color feature provides the most information about the classification model and builds the most accurate classifier. If the color feature were used with the GLCMv, the accuracy would improve by about 3%. In contrast, the Haralick feature does not improve the accuracy, indicating that the GLCM itself contains more information that can be used to improve the prediction. It also shows that with combined image acquisition times in the label, the within-group sum of squares can be reduced by 2–31%, and the accuracy can be increased by 1–2% for some categories, showing that the change of crops over time was also an important factor of image features. Since the flight safety accident of Germanwings Airlines and the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic have happened in recent years, the mental state of civil aviation pilots has paid much attention. The work of civil aviation pilots has to face pressure from families, individuals, companies and other multi-faceted sources. Therefore, it may lead to negative work behaviors and performance, and even further affect flight safety. The study investigates the relationship between role stress, emotional exhaustion, and well-being of among civil aviation pilots. Additionally, this study determines whether leisure participation moderates the relationship between emotional exhaustion and well-being. Participants were 249 Taiwanese pilots, who were administered questionnaires that measured role conflict, role ambiguity, well-being, and leisure participation. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was utilized to analyze data in this study. Role stress had a significant effect on emotional exhaustion which had a significant effect on well-being among the pilots. Leisure participation moderated in reducing negative influence of emotional exhaustion on well-being. These findings regarding the negative impact of pilots' negative emotional state on their work performance can serve as a reference point for informing human resource management strategies that focus on enhancing well-being among pilots. Simple Summary: In patients with esophageal cancer bleeding, the presence of tumor ulcer and arterial–esophageal fistula (AEF) is a common occurrence. Notably, AEF is associated with an exceptionally poor prognosis, yet there is no prediction score to estimate its occurrence rate. Therefore, we introduce a novel model, the HEARTS-Score, for predicting AEF in esophageal cancer bleeding patients. This predictive model effectively distinguishes patients at risk, as evidenced by a c-statistic of 0.82 (95% CI 0.72–0.92). By employing this model, clinicians can more objectively differentiate between high-risk and low-risk patients, facilitating more efficient clinical decision-making, diagnostic planning, and subsequent treatment strategies. Purpose: To develop and internally validate a novel prediction score to predict the occurrence of arterial–esophageal fistula (AEF) in esophageal cancer bleeding. Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled patients with esophageal cancer bleeding in the emergency department. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of AEF. The patients were randomly divided into a derivation group and a validation group. In the derivation stage, a predictive model was developed using logistic regression analysis. Subsequently, internal validation of the model was conducted in the validation cohort during the validation stage to assess its discrimination ability. Results: A total of 257 patients were enrolled in this study. All participants were randomized to a derivation cohort (n = 155) and a validation cohort (n = 102). AEF occurred in 22 patients (14.2%) in the derivation group and 14 patients (13.7%) in the validation group. A predictive model (HEARTS-Score) comprising five variables (hematemesis, active bleeding, serum creatinine level >1.2 mg/dL, prothrombin time >13 s, and previous stent implantation) was established. The HEARTS-Score demonstrated a high discriminative ability in both the derivation and validation cohorts, with c-statistics of 0.90 (95% CI 0.82–0.98) and 0.82 (95% CI 0.72–0.92), respectively. Conclusions: By employing this novel prediction score, clinicians can make more objective risk assessments, optimizing diagnostic strategies and tailoring treatment approaches. Phase retrieval from single interferogram is of great interest for the possibility of dynamic phase measurement. However, it is a very complicated process in reality since the unknowns and knows are highly unequal. In this paper, we propose a fast phase recovery method from single interferogram based on deep convolution neural network. The network is trained based on supervised learning to achieve the purpose of quickly obtaining unwrapped phase results from a single interferogram. To improve the detection accuracy, a modified set establishment model has been propose to improve the practicability of the fringe data. The simulation and experimental results show that the root mean square value of residual phase extraction error by this method is closed to 0.01 λ (λ = 632.8 nm), and the constructed depth convolution neural network model has significant flexibility and effective generalization ability for phase recovery of single frame interference fringe. We study the second-order scalar and density perturbations generated by Gaussian curvature perturbations and primordial gravitational waves in the radiation-dominated era. After presenting all the possible second-order source terms, we obtain the explicit expressions of the kernel functions and the power spectra of the second-order scalar perturbations. We show that the primordial gravitational waves might affect second-order energy density perturbation δ (2) = δ ρ (2) / ρ (0) significantly. This study examined how their place attachments and virtual reality (VR) experiences affect tourists’ travel destination choices. Prior research has not focused on the relationship between motivation from VR experience and tourists’ destination choices. A research model was developed based on the social identity and signaling perspective. Altogether, 436 tourists were interviewed after purpose sampling was adopted. The research findings show that tourists’ place attachment has no significant effect on the cognitive destination image; VR experience promotes a mental destination image; cognitive destination image significantly affects destination choice; and responsiveness has moderation effects on cognitive destination image and destination choice. VR technology allows travel agencies to combine destination marketing with attractive tourist destinations so that tourists can experience a destination’s beauty in advance. Plasmonics has been demonstrated to improve the performance of various optoelectronic devices operating in the infrared to visible wavelength regime. However, limited by optical properties of suitable plasmonic materials in ultraviolet (UV) regimes, rare works have been devoted to UV applications with plasmonic structures. This work deliberately fabricates a heterogeneous array of Al nanocaps (Al‐NC) on a wide‐bandgap semiconductor of GaN truncated nanocones (GaN‐TNC) and then presents a multifunctional plasmonic sensor for excellent UV photodetection and air‐quality‐index (AQI) gas sensing. As a UV photodetector, this work shows maximum responsivity (1.8 × 108 AW−1) and detectivity (1.2 × 1018 Jones) at the resonance wavelength of 355 nm, which based on the current knowledge, is the highest detectivity among GaN‐based UV photodetectors. Such a UV photodetector also introduces a decent response of rise time (78.3 ms) and fall time (303.5 ms), respectively. As a gas sensor, this work detects a key AQI gas of NO2 and provides a superior response of 28% and a detection limit of 500 ppb, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent rise in atmospheric methane (CH4) concentrations accelerates climate change and offsets mitigation efforts. Although wetlands are the largest natural CH4 source, estimates of global wetland CH4 emissions vary widely among approaches taken by bottom‐up (BU) process‐based biogeochemical models and top‐down (TD) atmospheric inversion methods. Here, we integrate in situ measurements, multi‐model ensembles, and a machine learning upscaling product into the International Land Model Benchmarking system to examine the relationship between wetland CH4 emission estimates and model performance. We find that using better‐performing models identified by observational constraints reduces the spread of wetland CH4 emission estimates by 62% and 39% for BU‐ and TD‐based approaches, respectively. However, global BU and TD CH4 emission estimate discrepancies increased by about 15% (from 31 to 36 TgCH4 year−1) when the top 20% models were used, although we consider this result moderately uncertain given the unevenly distributed global observations. Our analyses demonstrate that model performance ranking is subject to benchmark selection due to large inter‐site variability, highlighting the importance of expanding coverage of benchmark sites to diverse environmental conditions. We encourage future development of wetland CH4 models to move beyond static benchmarking and focus on evaluating site‐specific and ecosystem‐specific variabilities inferred from observations. Phase extraction from single interferogram is of high significance and increasingly interest in optical metrology. In this contribute we propose an advanced Pixel-level Lissajous Ellipse Fitting (APLEF) method to extract the phase from single interferogram without carrier. At each pixel, a Lissajous figure is created by plotting N against D, where N and D are subtractions and additions of intensities of adjacent pixels in a small window. The so created Lissajous figure is already in phase quadrature because of the subtraction and addition process, and the Lissajous Figure is forced to be closed by taking the opposite values of N and D, i.e. –N and -D into account. The closed and in phase quadrature Lissajous Figure is the key point for APLEF to demodulate the single inteferogram without carrier in theoretically. The segmented RNA genome of influenza A viruses (IAVs) enables viral evolution through genetic reassortment after multiple IAVs coinfect the same cell, leading to viruses harboring combinations of eight genomic segments from distinct parental viruses. Existing data indicate that reassortant genotypes are not equiprobable; however, the low throughput of available virology techniques does not allow quantitative analysis. Here, we have developed a high-throughput single-cell droplet microfluidic system allowing encapsulation of IAV-infected cells, each cell being infected by a single progeny virion resulting from a coinfection process. Customized barcoded primers for targeted viral RNA sequencing enabled the analysis of 18,422 viral genotypes resulting from coinfection with two circulating human H1N1pdm09 and H3N2 IAVs. Results were highly reproducible, confirmed that genetic reassortment is far from random, and allowed accurate quantification of reassortants including rare events. In total, 159 out of the 254 possible reassortant genotypes were observed but with widely varied prevalence (from 0.038 to 8.45%). In cells where eight segments were detected, all 112 possible pairwise combinations of segments were observed. The inclusion of data from single cells where less than eight segments were detected allowed analysis of pairwise cosegregation between segments with very high confidence. Direct coupling analysis accurately predicted the fraction of pairwise segments and full genotypes. Overall, our results indicate that a large proportion of reassortant genotypes can emerge upon coinfection and be detected over a wide range of frequencies, highlighting the power of our tool for systematic and exhaustive monitoring of the reassortment potential of IAVs. Background: Kodamaea ohmeri is a rare pathogen with high mortality and is found among blood samples in a considerable proportion; however, gastrointestinal infection of K. ohmeri is extremely rare. Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is also an uncommon fungal; these two fungal infections reported concomitantly are unprecedented. Case presentation: We described a case of a 37-year-old male who got infected with K. ohmeri and invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. We used the mass spectrometry and histopathology to identify these two fungal infections separately. For the treatment of K. ohmeri, we chose caspofungin. As for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis, we used voriconazole, amphotericin B, and then surgery. The patient was treated successfully through the collaboration of multiple disciplines. Microcystis aeruginosa and ammonia pollution are two important environmental stress factors in water eutrophication. Herein, we simulated environmental conditions to investigate the effects of chronic exposure (single and combined) to M. aeruginosa and total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) on lipid metabolism and muscle quality in zebrafish. Our results showed that M. aeruginosa and TAN significantly induced lipid deposition and tissue damage in the liver of zebrafish. Liver transcriptomic analysis revealed that M. aeruginosa and TAN disrupted the balance in lipid synthesis, decomposition, and transport, ultimately leading to hepatic lipid accumulation. Moreover, exposure to M. aeruginosa or TAN alone resulted in decreased crude protein content and increased lipid content in muscle, as well as disrupted muscle fatty acid composition. Metabolomic analysis of muscle revealed significant alterations in metabolites such as glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids and fatty acids. The co-exposure of M. aeruginosa and TAN had a more significant effect on liver lipid dysfunction and muscle quality deterioration in zebrafish. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential risks and hazards of M. aeruginosa and TAN in eutrophic water bodies subject to Microcystis blooms, and can help inform effective strategies for monitoring and managing these toxins in aquatic ecosystems. In this contribute therefore, we propose to unambiguous the spurious phase sign problem using transformer based Swin-ResUnet which has strong feature extraction capabilities. Classic antiglomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease is an exceedingly rare but extremely aggressive form of glomerulonephritis, typically caused by autoantibodies directed against cryptic, conformational epitopes within the noncollagenous domain of the type IV collagen alpha-3 subunit. Pathologic diagnosis is established by the presence of strong, diffuse, linear staining for immunoglobulin on immunofluorescence microscopy. Recently, patients with atypical clinical and pathologic findings of anti-GBM disease have been described. These patients tend to have an indolent clinical course, without pulmonary involvement, and laboratory testing rarely reveals the presence of anti-GBM antibodies. Specific guidelines for the treatment and management of these patients are unclear. Here, we describe a case of atypical anti-GBM disease in a young child who presented with hematuria and prominent proteinuria. Throughout the course of his illness, creatinine remained normal. We report a new implementation of the density functional embedding theory (DFET) in the VASP code, using the projector-augmented-wave (PAW) formalism. Newly developed algorithms allow us to efficiently perform optimized effective potential optimizations within PAW. The new algorithm generates robust and physically correct embedding potentials, as we verified using several test systems including a covalently bound molecule, a metal surface, and bulk semiconductors. We show that with the resulting embedding potential, embedded cluster models can reproduce the electronic structure of point defects in bulk semiconductors, thereby demonstrating the validity of DFET in semiconductors for the first time. Compared to our previous version, the new implementation of DFET within VASP affords use of all features of VASP (e.g., a systematic PAW library, a wide selection of functionals, a more flexible choice of U correction formalisms, and faster computational speed) with DFET. Furthermore, our results are fairly robust with respect to both plane-wave and Gaussian type orbital basis sets in the embedded cluster calculations. Potassium often has a negative connotation in Nephrology as patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are prone to develop hyperkalaemia. Approaches to the management of chronic hyperkalaemia include a low potassium diet or potassium binders. Yet, emerging data indicate that dietary potassium may be beneficial for patients with CKD. Epidemiological studies have shown that a higher urinary potassium excretion (as proxy for higher dietary potassium intake) is associated with lower blood pressure (BP) and lower cardiovascular risk, as well as better kidney outcomes. Considering that the composition of our current diet is characterized by a high sodium and low potassium content, increasing dietary potassium may be equally important as reducing sodium. Recent studies have revealed that dietary potassium modulates the activity of the thiazide-sensitive sodium-chloride cotransporter in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT). The DCT acts as a potassium sensor to control the delivery of sodium to the collecting duct, the potassium-secreting portion of the kidney. Physiologically, this allows immediate kaliuresis after a potassium load, and conservation of potassium during potassium deficiency. Clinically, it provides a novel explanation for the inverse relationship between dietary potassium and BP. Moreover, increasing dietary potassium intake can exert BP-independent effects on the kidney by relieving the deleterious effects of a low potassium diet (inflammation, oxidative stress and fibrosis). The aim of this comprehensive review is to link physiology with clinical medicine by proposing that the same mechanisms that allow us to excrete an acute potassium load also protect us from hypertension, cardiovascular disease and CKD. The density functional theory (DFT)+U method is an efficient and effective way to calculate the ground-state properties of strongly correlated transition metal compounds, with the effective U parameters typically determined empirically. Two ab initio methods have been developed to compute the U parameter based on either constrained DFT (CDFT) or unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) theory. Previous studies have demonstrated the success of both methods in typical open-shell materials such as FeO and NiO. In this Communication we report numerical instability issues that arise for the CDFT method when applied to closed-shell transition metals, by using ZnO and Cu2O as examples. By contrast, the UHF method behaves much more robustly for both closed- and open-shell materials, making it more suitable for treating closed-shell transition metals, as well as main group elements. The Ki-67 index is an established prognostic factor in gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors (GI-NETs) and defines tumor grade. It is currently estimated by microscopically examining tumor tissue single-immunostained (SS) for Ki-67 and counting the number of Ki-67-positive and Ki-67-negative tumor cells within a subjectively picked hot-spot. Intraobserver variability in this procedure as well as difficulty in distinguishing tumor from non-tumor cells can lead to inaccurate Ki-67 indices and possibly incorrect tumor grades. We introduce two computational tools that utilize Ki-67 and synaptophysin double-immunostained (DS) slides to improve the accuracy of Ki-67 index quantitation in GI-NETs: (1) Synaptophysin-KI-Estimator (SKIE), a pipeline automating Ki-67 index quantitation via whole-slide image (WSI) analysis and (2) deep-SKIE, a deep learner-based approach where a Ki-67 index heatmap is generated throughout the tumor. Ki-67 indices for 50 GI-NETs were quantitated using SKIE and compared with DS slide assessments by three pathologists using a microscope and a fourth pathologist via manually ticking off each cell, the latter of which was deemed the gold standard (GS). Compared to the GS, SKIE achieved a grading accuracy of 90% and substantial agreement (linear-weighted Cohen's kappa 0.62). Using DS WSIs, deep-SKIE displayed a training, validation, and testing accuracy of 98.4%, 90.9%, and 91.0%, respectively, significantly higher than using SS WSIs. Since DS slides are not standard clinical practice, we also integrated a cycle generative adversarial network into our pipeline to transform SS into DS WSIs. Background: Triage plays a crucial role in the emergency department (ED) management of mass casualty incidents (MCIs) when resources are limited. This study aimed to compare the performance of simple triage and rapid treatment (START) with that of the Taiwan Triage and Acuity Scale (TTAS) for the ED triage of victims following an earthquake-related MCI. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the records of victims presenting at our ED with earthquake-related injuries within 24 h of a large-scale earthquake. TTAS was initially used at our ED for this event, and START was performed by retrospectively reviewing the patient records in a blinded manner. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), sensitivity, and specificity of START and TTAS were determined for predicting ED discharge. Results: We enrolled 105 patients (predominantly women, 60.0%; median age, 45.0 years) in this study; most of them presented with traumatic injuries and were initially triaged as TTAS level III (78.1%), followed by TTAS level II (11.4%). Although the majority of the victims (81.0%) were discharged, four deaths occurred. A moderate agreement in differentiating emergency from nonemergency patients was observed between START and TTAS. Furthermore, both the triage systems showed similar predictions for ED disposition (START AUC/sensitivity/specificity: 0.709/82.35%/55.00%; TTAS AUC/sensitivity/specificity: 0.709/90.59%/45.00%). Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that START and TTAS have similar triage accuracy and ability to predict ED disposition. Soot particles, mainly coming from fuel combustion, affect climate forcing through absorbing light and also result in adverse human health outcomes. Though biodiesel or additives blending with diesel was considered environmentally friendly, the understanding on absorbing and oxidative capacity of soot emitted from them are still unclear. The water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) content, surface chemical structure, light absorption and oxidative potential (OPDTT) of soot from biodiesel/diesel and chemicals/diesel blends were investigated utilizing total organic carbon analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry and dithiothreitol (DTT) assay. The differences and correlations between soot properties were statistically analyzed. Chemicals/diesel blends soot owned significantly higher WSOC content, ratio of mass absorbing efficiency (MAE) in 250 and 365 nm (E 2 /E 3), OPDTT, and higher surface carbonyl content. Coconut biodiesel/diesel blends soot contained evidently higher aromatic carbon–oxygen single bond (Ar_C–O) content, and higher MAE 365. The individual comparison of biodiesel/diesel blends showed 20% coconut biodiesel blend owned the lowest WSOC, E 2 /E 3 and OPDTT, while highest Ar_C–O and MAE 365 , representing strongest absorbing properties. Association analysis showed OPDTT was significantly positively correlated with WSOC. Further, the evident negative correlation between MAE 365 and OPDTT was observed. Our results showed coconut biodiesel/diesel blends soot induced lower levels of oxidative potential, whereas absorption of light was higher, which have far reaching consequences on climate forcing. The influenza A virus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase complex consists in three subunits, PB2, PB1 and PA, that perform transcription and replication of the viral genome through very distinct mechanisms. Biochemical and structural studies have revealed that the polymerase can adopt multiple conformations and form oligomers. However so far it remained unclear whether the available oligomeric crystal structures represent a functional state of the polymerase. Here we gained new insights into this question, by investigating the incompatibility between non-cognate subunits of influenza polymerase brought together through genetic reassortment. We observed that a 7:1 reassortant virus whose PB2 segment derives from the A/WSN/33 (WSN) virus in an otherwise A/PR/8/34 (PR8) backbone is attenuated, despite a 97% identity between the PR8-PB2 and WSN-PB2 proteins. Independent serial passages led to the selection of phenotypic revertants bearing distinct second-site mutations on PA, PB1 and/or PB2. The constellation of mutations present on one revertant virus was studied extensively using reverse genetics and cell-based reconstitution of the viral polymerase. The PA-E349K mutation appeared to play a major role in correcting the initial defect in replication (cRNA -> vRNA) of the PR8xWSN-PB2 reassortant. Strikingly the PA-E349K mutation, and also the PB2-G74R and PB1-K577G mutations present on other revertants, are located at a dimerization interface of the polymerase. All three restore wild-type-like polymerase activity in a minigenome assay while decreasing the level of polymerase dimerization. Overall, our data show that the polymerase subunits co-evolve to ensure not only optimal inter-subunit interactions within the heterotrimer, but also proper levels of dimerization of the heterotrimer which appears to be essential for efficient viral RNA replication. Our findings point to influenza polymerase dimerization as a feature that is controlled by a complex interplay of genetic determinants, can restrict genetic reassortment, and could become a target for antiviral drug development. We present a new cladding design for high birefringence and low confinement loss photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) using a full-vector finite element method with anisotropic perfectly matched boundary layer. Six cases of PCFs are proposed for comparison. The proposed cladding in PCFs is composed of five rings of air-holes. Air-holes on the inner two rings are arranged in a hexagonal symmetry whereas, air-holes on the outer three rings are arranged in an octagonal symmetry in fused silica. Results show that suitable design air-holes on the inner two rings will significantly increase the birefringence, whereas, elliptical holes with major axis along x-axis on the outer three rings will provide strong confinement ability. The highest modal birefringence and lowest confinement loss of our proposed case five structure at the excitation wavelength of λ = 1550 nm can be achieved at a magnitude of 0.87 × 10-2 and less than 0.01 dB/km with only five rings of air-holes in fiber cladding. The hypsometric curve and hypsometric integral (HI) of drainage basins are common tectonic geomorphologic indices. Generally, the hypsometric curve is convex and the HI is high in areas of strong rock uplift. However, previous research indicates that an inverse correlation exists between the HI and rock uplift in the mountain-piedmont junction in California. It has also been proposed that the basin HI in the range front area has scale dependence, which increases the difficulty of inferring tectonic uplift. We therefore examined the effects of tectonic uplift and basin scale on basin HI in the southern Coastal Range of eastern Taiwan. The results showed that basin size could affect the HI. First-order Strahler basins are smaller and have higher HIs, whereas second- and third-order basins are larger and have lower HIs, indicating some form of scale dependence. The coefficient of logarithmic regression between mean area and mean HI of every subbasin was calculated to determine the scale dependence index (SDI). The lower the SDI, the higher the scale dependence. The SDI was utilized to distinguish basins' topographic tendencies between range interior and range front. We also applied the igneous-area ratio to define spatial tendencies of basins' lithology distributions. The lower the igneous-area ratio, the greater the spatial tendency toward range front will be. Basins in the middle of the south Coastal Range tended to approach a range interior steady state, with higher SDIs and a positive correlation between HI and rock uplift rate. Basins in the north and south of the south Coastal Range tended to be at a range front nonsteady state, with lower SDIs and a negative correlation between HI and rock uplift rate. Permafrost peatlands store large amounts of carbon potentially vulnerable to decomposition. However, the fate of that carbon in a changing climate remains uncertain in models due to complex interactions among hydrological, biogeochemical, microbial, and plant processes. In this study, we estimated effects of climate forcing biases present in global climate reanalysis products on carbon cycle predictions at a thawing permafrost peatland in subarctic Sweden. The analysis was conducted with a comprehensive biogeochemical model (ecosys) across a permafrost thaw gradient encompassing intact permafrost palsa with an ice core and a shallow active layer, partly thawed bog with a deeper active layer and a variable water table, and fen with a water table close to the surface, each with distinct vegetation and microbiota. Using in situ observations to correct local cold and wet biases found in the Global Soil Wetness Project Phase 3 (GSWP3) climate reanalysis forcing, we demonstrate good model performance by comparing predicted and observed carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) exchanges, thaw depth, and water table depth. The simulations driven by the bias-corrected climate suggest that the three peatland types currently accumulate carbon from the atmosphere, although the bog and fen sites can have annual positive radiative forcing impacts due to their higher CH4 emissions. Our simulations indicate that projected precipitation increases could accelerate CH4 emissions from the palsa area, even without further degradation of palsa permafrost. The GSWP3 cold and wet biases for this site significantly alter simulation results and lead to erroneous active layer depth (ALD) and carbon budget estimates. Biases in simulated CO2 and CH4 exchanges from biased climate forcing are as large as those among the thaw stages themselves at a landscape scale across the examined permafrost thaw gradient. Future studies should thus not only focus on changes in carbon budget associated with morphological changes in thawing permafrost, but also recognize the effects of climate forcing uncertainty on carbon cycling. The carbon-nitrogen (CN) biogeochemistry and the prognostic canopy structure scheme used in the Community Land Model version 4.5 (CLM4.5) are integrated into the multiple canopy layer higher order closure Advanced Canopy-Atmosphere-Soil Algorithm (ACASA). The ACASA-CN model inherits the advantages from ACASA and CLM4.5, and it is the first model that represents fully prognostic terrestrial feedbacks with a higher order closure turbulence scheme and vertically resolved canopy structure. The simulations are evaluated in terms of ecological, biogeophysical and biogeochemical aspects at six AmeriFlux eddy covariance sites encompassing a variety of vegetation types and microclimatic conditions across the continental United States. Our model evaluation shows that ACASA-CN reasonably simulates surface layer properties, such as vegetation structure and plant phenology. Our results indicate that the use of a higher order closure turbulence scheme with multiple canopy layer representation is critical to land carbon cycle simulation. Based on our simulations, water vapor exchange between the land surface and the atmosphere is primarily through plant transpiration (78–88%), and canopy evapotranspiration is enhanced with the use of CN biogeochemistry. Graphical abstract Abstract Despite great advances in contemporary medicine, brain death still remains enigmatic and its cellular and molecular mechanisms unsettled. This review summarizes recent findings that substantiate the notion that PTEN/FLJ10540/PI3K/Akt cascade, the classical tumorigenic signaling pathway, is actively engaged in experimental brain stem death. These results were based on a clinically relevant animal model that employs the pesticide mevinphos as the experimental insult in Sprague-Dawley rats to mimic brain stem death in patients died of organophosphate poisoning. The neural substrate investigated is the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM), a brain stem site classically known to maintain arterial pressure (AP) and is established to be the origin of a “life-and-death” signal detected from AP, which reflects brain stem cardiovascular dysregulation that precedes death. Activation of PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in the RVLM upregulates the nuclear factor-κB/nitric oxide synthase II/peroxynitrite cascade, resulting in impairment of brain stem cardiovascular regulation that leads to the loss of the “life-and-death” signal in experimental brain stem death. This process is reinforced by FLJ10540, a PI3K-association protein; and is counteracted by PTEN, a negative regulator of PI3K/Akt signaling. The concept that a classical signaling pathway in tumorigenesis is also an active player in cardiovascular dysregulation in brain stem death provides new ramifications for translational medicine. It promulgates the concept that rather than focusing on a particular disease condition, a new vista for future therapeutic strategy against both fatal eventualities should target at this common cellular cascade. Ammonia and nano-TiO 2 are commonly found pollutants in aquatic environments around the world. NH 3 has been proved to be absorbed on nano-TiO 2 surface, therefore, the biosafety and environmental effects of ammonia and co-occurring nano-TiO 2 in aquatic environments has increased considerably in recent years. To explore the potential interactive effects and mechanisms of ammonia and nano-TiO 2 on the intestinal immune system, three-month-old female zebrafish were exposed to total ammonia nitrogen (TAN; 0, 3, 30 mg/L) with or without nano-TiO 2 (1 mg/L) for 60 d. The results showed that intestinal ammonia levels increased with the increase of TAN exposure concentration in the presence of nano-TiO 2. Histopathological analysis demonstrated that both TAN and nano-TiO 2 caused cell vacuolation, lymphocyte infiltration and goblet cells hyperplasia in the intestine mucosa. Our study also found that the contents and gene expression levels of lysozyme (lys) and β-defensin (def-β) in the intestine of zebrafish exposed to TAN alone or combined with nano-TiO 2 were significantly reduced, suggesting a decline in the intestinal innate immunity of fish. A broad upregulation of TLRs-related genes indicated that TAN and nano-TiO 2 could activate TLR4/5-mediated MyD88-dependent pathway, and eventually induce intestinal inflammation. It should be noted that TAN combined with nano-TiO 2 had more significant inhibitory effects on the intestinal structure and innate immune responses than TAN alone. Current data suggested that ammonia and nano-TiO 2 had a synergistic inhibitory effect on intestinal mucosal immunity, and their associated health risk to aquatic animals and the water ecosystem should not be underestimated. This paper conducts a parametric study on the seismic response of multistorey bidirectional eccentric structures from elastic stage to inelastic stage. Based on a simplified multistorey bidirectional eccentric model composed of bidirectional lateral load-resisting members, a general law is proposed for three-stage natural frequency variation behaviour from elastic stage to inelastic stage of eccentric frame structures with different layers. Different simplification treatments are conducted on each stage and the three stable parameter analysis stages are defined. The corresponding dynamic stiffness matrices and motion equations in different loading stages are derived. On this basis, a parametric analysis of seismic response of a three-storey bidirectional regular eccentric structure from elastic stage to inelastic stage is conducted. Effects of the uncoupled torsion to lateral frequency ratios (Ω) and bidirectional eccentricities on the seismic responses are investigated. The results reveal that as Ω increases, translational displacement in the load direction first decreases and then increases; meanwhile, the displacement perpendicular to load direction and torsion displacement first rise and then decrease sharply. When Ω=1.1, the coupling effect between the translation in the load direction and the torsion is at its strongest condition. Increasing the eccentricities leads to a decrease in the displacement in the load direction as well as an increase in the displacement perpendicular to load direction and torsion displacement. Variation regularity of inelastic seismic response is remarkably different from that in elastic stage. The canopy structural and functional impacts on land surface modeling of energy and carbon fluxes were investigated by a series of simulations conducted at AmeriFlux eddy covariance sites. Canopy structures were described by different degrees of complexity of Leaf Area Index (LAI) datasets. The monthly climatological LAI datasets applied in the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model and the Community Earth System Model (CESM) were used to represent static ecological conditions. The LAI remotely sensed by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used to represent time-varying ecological conditions with natural variability. To investigate the sensitivity of different canopy profile representations, all of these LAI datasets were used to assign the necessary ecological information for single and multiple canopy layer land surface models to simulate a seven-year period across a variety of vegetation covers. The results show that a more realistic canopy profile representation (i.e., multiple layers), both in terms of structural and functional treatments, improves biogeophysical and biogeochemical simulations. The root mean square errors for the simulated evapotranspiration and Net Ecosystem Exchange are reduced by 10% and 15%, respectively when the ecological information is represented by a more realistic time-varying LAI dataset instead of a static LAI dataset with no geographical sensitivity. A land surface model with multiple canopy layers and a realistic ecological dataset, which can better represent ecosystem structural and functional responses to microclimate conditions, is thus recommended for long-term climate projections. Drought, one of the most destructive natural disasters is projected by numerous studies to become more severe and widespread under climate change. These water limitations will have profound effects on terrestrial systems across the globe. Yet, most of the existing drought monitoring indices are based on drought stress derived from environmental conditions rather than ecosystem responses. Here, we propose using a new approach, the Normalized Ecosystem Drought Index (NEDI), coupled with modified Variable Interval Time Averaging (VITA) method, to quantify drought severity according to ecosystem transitional patterns with water availability. The method is inspired by Sprengel’s and Liebig’s Law of the Minimum for plant nutrition. Eddy covariance measurements from 60 AmeriFlux sites that cross 8 International Geosphere–Biosphere Programme (IGBP) vegetation types were used to validate the use of NEDI coupled to VITA. The results show that NEDI can reasonably depict both drought stress posed by the environment and drought responses presented by various ecosystems. Water availability becomes a dominant limiting factor for ecosystem evapotranspiration when NEDI falls below zero, and normalized evapotranspiration strength generally decreases with decreasing NEDI under this regime. The widely used self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index (sc-PDSI) and Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) have difficulty capturing ecosystem responses to water availability, although they can reasonably represent drought conditions detected in the environment. The normalization feature employed in NEDI makes it feasible to compare drought severity over different regions, seasons and vegetation types. The new drought index also provides a valuable tool for irrigation and water distribution management practices which may enhance water conservation efforts as drought conditions become more prevalent. In this article, we consider a special class of networks called a one-articulated network, which is a proper superset of galled trees. We show that if the distance matrix M is derived from an ultrametric one-articulated network N (i.e., for any species X and Y, the entry M(X, Y) is equal to the shortest distance between X and Y in N), we can re-construct a network that satisfies M in O(n²) time, where n denotes the number of species; further, the reconstructed network is guaranteed to be the simplest, in a sense that the number of hybrid nodes is minimized. Quantum embedding theory aims to provide an efficient solution to obtain accurate electronic energies for systems too large for full-scale, high-level quantum calculations. It adopts a hierarchical approach that divides the total system into a small embedded region and a larger environment, using different levels of theory to describe each part. Previously, we developed a density-based quantum embedding theory called density functional embedding theory (DFET), which achieved considerable success in metals and semiconductors. In this work, we extend DFET into a densitymatrix-- based nonlocal form, enabling DFET to study the stronger quantum couplings between covalently bonded subsystems. We name this theory density-matrix functional embedding theory (DMFET) and we demonstrate its performance in several test examples that resemble various real applications in both chemistry and biochemistry. DMFET gives excellent results in all cases tested thus far, including predicting isomerization energies, proton transfer energies and highest occupied molecular orbital--lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gaps for local chromophores. Here, we show that DMFET systematically improves the quality of the results compared with the widely used state-of-the-art methods, such as the simple capped cluster model or the widely used ONIOM method. Electromagnetic metasurfaces with strong nonlinear responses and angular selectivity could offer many new avenues for designing ultrathin optics components. We investigated the optical second harmonic generation from plasmonic metasurfaces composed of aligned gold nanopillars with a pronounced out-of-plane tilt using a flexible nonlinear Fourier microscope. The experimental and computational results demonstrate that these samples function as wavevector-selective nonlinear metasurfaces, that is, the coherent second harmonic signal does not only depend on the polarization and wavelength of the excitation beam, but also of its direction of incidence, in spite of the subwavelength thickness of the active layer. Specifically, we observe that the nonlinear response can vary by almost two orders-of-magnitude when the incidence angle is changed from positive to negative values compared to the surface normal. Further, it is demonstrated that these metasurfaces act as a directional nonlinear mirrors, paving the way for new design of directional meta-mirrors in the nonlinear regime. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bi-directional short-range free-space optical (FSO) communication with bi-directional 2×4×10 Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) channel signals is demonstrated by using a transmission distance of 25 m. The single-mode-fiber components are used in the optical terminals for both optical transmitting and receiving functions. The measured power penalties for the 25-m bi-directional four-channel FSO communication compared with the back-to-back link and uni-directional transmission system are less than 0.8 dB and 0.2 dB, respectively. The environmental factor effects, including the oblique incidence through the building window glasses, thermally induced non-uniform air index as well as rainfall on the FSO performance are investigated and analyzed. CXCR4 is a member of chemokine receptors and plays a vital role in numerous diseases and cancer processes, which makes the CXCR4/CXCL12 chemotactic axis a potential therapeutic target. In this study, we used lentiviral vectors as a novel technology to produce a monoclonal antibody against CXCR4. Lentivirus vector pLV-CXCR4-Puro was successfully constructed and a hybridoma cell line 1A4 was generated. The CXCR4 monoclonal antibody (MAb) 1A4 had high titer and affinity, and the isotype was identified as IgG1a. The recombinant lentivirus vector could effectively stimulate the production of 39 kDa CXCR4 antibody in vivo after immunization. Western blot analysis showed that the MAb could recognize the CXCR4 antigen expressed on transfected 293T cells as well as various human cancer cell lines. Immunofluorescence assays showed that MAb 1A4 mainly localized and strongly stained on the membrane of transfected 293T cells. Immunohistochemistry assays demonstrated that 1A4 could recognize strong expression of CXCR4 on the hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus, the method using lentiviral vectors may have application on effective and large-scale production of the CXCR4 monoclonal antibody, which will be a potential tool for the diagnosis and treatment of human cancers. • Water-use efficiency (WUE) inferred from 40 eddy covariance sites was analyzed. • No single ecophysiological factor individually explains the emergent WUE trends. • Higher WUE covering less than 22% of the observational period control WUE trends. • CMIP6 models do not capture factors contributing to the observed WUE trends. Plant stomatal conductance regulates photosynthesis and transpiration. This physiological link affects ecosystem responses to microclimate and harmonizes carbon, energy, and water exchanges between the biosphere and atmosphere. The relationship between water losses via transpiration and carbon gains via photosynthesis can be quantified by plant water-use efficiency (WUE). While leaf- and ecosystem-scale observations both suggest rising WUE in recent decades, WUE trends inferred from the ecosystem scale are much larger than those inferred from the leaf scale or implied by theory. The unexpectedly large ecosystem-scale WUE trends complicate interpretation of ecophysiological responses to changing environmental conditions. Here, we analyze ecosystem-scale WUE inferred from 40 FLUXNET sites, each with at least 10 years of measurements. Our results demonstrate that observed ecosystem-scale WUE trends are more sensitive to hourly weather conditions than longer-term changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide or vapor pressure deficit. Our analysis shows that Earth System Models participating in CMIP6 did not capture the observed WUE sensitivity to inter-site variability and microclimatic conditions. Collectively, our findings suggest that ecosystem-scale WUE trends reflect water-carbon interactions across multiple temporal scales, and disentangling factors contributing to emergent ecosystem responses is needed to infer ecophysiological relationships and model structures from observations. Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is an environmentally friendly photovoltaic material with promising applications in thin-film solar cells. Although CZTS's efficiency is currently too low, stoichiometry/defect engineering presents a strategy for further improvement. As-grown CZTS is typically disordered and therefore prone to form secondary phases, making the final product stoichiometry difficult to determine and even harder to control. We use first-principles quantum mechanics in combination with Monte Carlo simulations to determine CZTS stoichiometry under various experimental conditions. We develop an approach to predicting the optimal CZTS stoichiometry, explaining the physical origin of Zn-enrichment observed in experiments. We further propose practical ways to introduce more free carriers into CZTS in order to screen observed local potential fluctuations, increase conductivity, and ultimately improve the efficiency of CZTS. Endocrine active substances, including naturally occurring hormones and various synthetic chemicals have received much concern owing to their endocrine disrupting potencies. It is essential to monitor their environmental occurrence since these compounds may pose potential threats to biota and human health. In this study, yeast-based reporter assays were carried out to investigate the presence of (anti-)androgenic, (anti-)estrogenic, and (anti-)thyroid compounds in the aquatic environment in southern Taiwan. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) was also used to measure the environmental concentrations of selected endocrine active substances for assessing potential ecological risks and characterizing contributions to the endocrine disrupting activities. Bioassay results showed that anti-androgenic (ND–7489 μg L −1 flutamide equivalent), estrogenic (ND–347 ng L −1 17β-estradiol equivalent), and anti-thyroid activities were detected in the dissolved and particulate phases of river water samples, while anti-estrogenic activities (ND–10 μg L −1 4-hydroxytamoxifen equivalent) were less often found. LC–MS/MS analysis revealed that anti-androgenic and estrogenic contaminants, such as bisphenol A, triclosan, and estrone were frequently detected in Taiwanese rivers. In addition, their risk quotient values were often higher than 1, suggesting that they may pose an ecological risk to the aquatic biota. Further identification of unknown anti-androgenic and estrogenic contaminants in Taiwanese rivers may be necessary to protect Taiwan's aquatic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) allows the determination of analytes at low concentrations on silver substrates. A novel facile method is reported to reproducibly synthesize large area SERS substrates. A composite of silver nanoparticles was fabricated by drop casting silver nitrate followed by thermal reduction to immobilize the nanoparticles on the surface. The morphology of the nanoparticles was characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy, and the composition was evaluated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Reproducible substrates were prepared using Rhodamine 6G at concentrations from 1 to 50 µM as the SERS probe with relative standard deviations of 22% for ten locations on one sample. An inverse correlation between probe concentration and precision was obtained. The influence of microstructure morphology on the reproducibility was characterized; the more uniform the morphology of the silver microstructure, the better the precision of the substrates. Today we recognise more clearly that landscape includes perceptual aspects, so landscape planning and policy should reflect people's perception. But does it? Using a case study in Sicao, located in the south-west coastal area of Taiwan, this article examines the landscape notions expressed in the city landscape policy and in local people's perception. The findings show differences in these notions of landscape. The state policy reflects a static conception arising from planners' discursive knowledge whilst local people's perception reflects a dynamic conception deriving mainly from lived experience. While such different notions have resulted in obstacles for landscape management, they imply that state policy for managing the landscape dynamics should strike a better balance by taking local people's perceptual information and participation into account. Background AA amyloidosis due to subcutaneous injection of drugs of abuse has been described in the USA, but all the existing literature is from more than 20 years ago. There is more recent literature from Europe. We have observed a high incidence of AA amyloidosis in the county hospital in San Francisco. Design Here, we describe 24 patients who had kidney biopsy-proven AA amyloidosis from our hospital from 1998 to 2013. All the patients were thought to have AA amyloidosis from skin popping of illicit drugs after having exhausted the intravenous route. These patients with biopsy-proven AA amyloidosis were analysed further. Results All patients were found to have hepatitis C infection, hypertension was not common, most had advanced kidney failure, and acidosis was common as was tubulointerstitial involvement on the kidney biopsy. Other organ involvement included hepatomegaly and splenomegaly in a number of patients; direct myocardial involvement was not seen, but pulmonary hypertension, history of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism were common. The prognosis of these patients was poor. The mortality rate approached 50% 1 year after biopsy, and most of the patient needed dialysis shortly after diagnosis. Cessation of drug use seemed beneficial but rarely achievable. Conclusion AA amyloidosis from skin popping is common in San Francisco. Although a promising photovoltaic material that is inexpensive and easy to manufacture, Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) suffers from a low open circuit voltage thought to be due to local potential fluctuations caused by a disordered Cu/Zn sublattice. The disordered character of CZTS is difficult to study experimentally and has been universally neglected in computational studies. Here, we develop a cluster expansion model that enables simulation of the order-disorder phase transition in CZTS for the first time. With a proper atomic structure of the disordered phase in hand, we investigate the temperature-dependent voltage loss in CZTS, illustrating intrinsic limitations of existing synthesis methods and suggesting an optimal annealing temperature. We offer one explanation why Cu-poor CZTS is optimally efficient, as Cu vacancies increase the band gap via interactions between free carriers and the disordered nature of as-grown CZTS. Accordingly, increasing carrier concentrations may be an effective strategy to flatten the fluctuating potentials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
