8. Effect of Annealing Temperature on Minimum Domain Size of Ferroelectric Hafnia

Abstract

Here, we optimized the annealing temperature of HZO/TiN thin film heterostructure via multiscale analysis of remnant polarization, crystallographic phase, minimum ferroelectric domain size, and average grain size. We found that the remnant polarization was closely related to the relative amount of the orthorhombic phase whereas the minimum domain size was to the relative amount of the monoclinic phase. The minimum domain size was obtained at the annealing temperature of 500$^\cird$C while the optimum remnant polarization and capacitance at the annealing temperature of 600$^\circ$C. We conclude that the minimum domain size is more important than the sheer magnitude of remnant polarization considering the retention and fatigue of switchable polarization in nanoscale ferroelectric devices. Abstract

Nucleation in atomic crystallization remains poorly understood, despite advances in classical nucleation theory. The nucleation process has been described to involve a nonclassical mechanism that includes a spontaneous transition from disordered to crystalline states, but a detailed understanding of dynamics requires further investigation. In situ electron microscopy of heterogeneous nucleation of individual gold nanocrystals with millisecond temporal resolution shows that the early stage of atomic crystallization proceeds through dynamic structural fluctuations between disordered and crystalline states, rather than through a single irreversible transition. Our experimental and theoretical analyses support the idea that structural fluctuations originate from size-dependent thermodynamic stability of the two states in atomic clusters. These findings, based on dynamics in a real atomic system, reshape and improve our understanding of nucleation mechanisms in atomic crystallization.

22. Charge Distribution Dependency on Gap Thickness of CMS Endcap RPC

Abstract

We report a systematic study of charge distribution dependency of CMS Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) on gap thickness. Prototypes of double-gap RPCs with six different gap thickness ranging from from 1.0 to 2.0 mm in 0.2-mm steps have been built with 2-mm-thick phenolic high-pressure-laminated plates. The efficiencies of the six gaps are measured as a function of the effective high voltages. We report that the strength of the electric fields of the gap is decreased as the gap thickness is increased. The distributions of charges in six gaps are measured. The space charge effect is seen in the charge distribution at the higher voltages. The logistic function is used to fit the charge distribution data. Smaller charges can be produced within smaller gas gap. Abstract

Purpose. This study aimed to evaluate the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) and inflammasomes in diabetes‐induced retinal cells and to determine their role in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Methods. To establish diabetes‐induced cell models, ARPE‐19 cells were treated with high glucose. The expression levels of five miRNAs (miR‐185, miR‐17, miR‐20a, miR‐15a, and miR‐15b) were measured in high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells using real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Western blotting was performed to measure inflammasome expression in cellular models. miR‐17 was selected as the target miRNA, and inflammasome expression was measured following the transfection of an miR‐17 mimic into high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells. Results. In high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells, miRNA expression was substantially downregulated, whereas that of inflammasome components was significantly increased. Following the transfection of the miR‐17 mimic into high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells, the levels of inflammasome components were significantly decreased. Conclusions. This study investigated the relationship between miRNAs and inflammasomes in diabetes‐induced cells using high glucose‐treated ARPE‐19 cells. These findings suggested that miR‐17 suppresses inflammasomes, thereby reducing the subsequent inflammatory response and indicating that miRNAs and inflammasomes could serve as new therapeutic targets for DR. Abstract

Natural killer (NK) cells are crucial in the innate immune response and show promise in cancer immunotherapy, but face challenges in activation and targeted gene delivery. In this study, bifunctional lipid nanoparticles (DLNPs) containing 1,2‐dioleoyl‐3‐trimethylammonium‐propane (DOTAP), designed to bolster the antitumor efficacy of chimeric antigen receptor‐modified NK (CAR‐NK) cells by facilitating activation and efficient CAR mRNA delivery are introduced. The DLNPs, created by functionalizing FDA‐approved LNP compositions, exhibit excellent mRNA encapsulation and colloidal stability. NK cells primed with DLNPs show increased cytotoxicity against cancer cells via extracellular signal‐regulated kinase/Mitogen‐Activated Protein Kinase pathway modulation and mitochondrial dynamics changes. The DLNPs enter NK cells predominantly through clathrin‐mediated endocytosis, boosting mRNA delivery and overcoming NK cells' resistance to genetic manipulation. CAR‐NK cells targeting glypican‐3, prevalent in hepatocellular carcinoma, show significant therapeutic effects in an orthotopic mouse model. These findings underscore the potential of DLNPs in enhancing CAR‐NK cell therapy for solid tumors, marking a significant stride in NK cell‐based cancer immunotherapy and broadening prospects for NK cell‐related disease interventions. Abstract

CMS experiment constructed the fourth Resistive Plate Chamber (RPC) trigger station composed of 144 RPCs to enhance the high momentum muon trigger efficiency at both endcap regions. All new CMS endcap RPC gaps are produced in accordance with QA and QC at the Korea Detector Laboratory (KODEL) in Korea. All qualified gaps have been delivered to three assembly sites: CERN in Switzerland, BARC in India, and Ghent University in Belgium for the RPC detector assembly. Abstract

Periodontitis, a prevalent chronic inflammatory disease caused by bacteria, poses a significant challenge to current treatments by merely slowing their progression. Herein, we propose an innovative solution in the form of hierarchical nanostructured 3D printed bilayer membranes that serve as dual-drug delivery nanoplatforms and provide scaffold function for the regeneration of periodontal tissue. Nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by combining lipid nanoparticle-loaded grape seed extract and simvastatin, as well as chitin nanocrystals, which were then 3D printed into a bilayer membrane that possesses antimicrobial properties and multiscale porosity for periodontal tissue regeneration. The constructs exhibited excellent mechanical properties by adding chitin nanocrystals and provided a sustained release of distinct drugs over 24 days. We demonstrated that the bilayer membranes are cytocompatible and have the ability to induce bone-forming markers in human mesenchymal stem cells, while showing potent antibacterial activity against pathogens associated with periodontitis. In vivostudies further confirmed the efficacy of bilayer membranes in enhancing alveolar bone regeneration and reducing inflammation in a periodontal defect model. This approach suggests promising avenues for the development of implantable constructs that not only combat infections, but also promote the regeneration of periodontal tissue, providing valuable insights into advanced periodontitis treatment strategies.
