Candelilla (Euphorbia antisyphilitica Zucc.) is a non-timber forest resource of ecological and economic importance in the arid zones of Mexico due to the commercialization of its wax for industrial purposes. The objectives of this study were (i) to delimit areas of current and projected future candelilla habitat suitability in Mexico and in the state of Coahuila, (ii) to determine the most important variables that define candelilla habitat, and (iii) to propose areas for candelilla conservation under climate change conditions in Coahuila. Records of candelilla presence, current and future bioclimatic layers from the MPIESM-LR and HadGEM2-ES models with two scenarios RCP 4.5 and 8.5, were used to create species distribution models with soil and topographical variables. MaxEnt software was used to project current habitat suitability zones under climate change. We estimated the current surface area of candelilla in Mexico to be 79,336.87 km2, and for Coahuila 25,620.75 km2. In Coahuila, using the MPIESM-LR model for 2050, the estimate was 20,177.67 km2 and 17,079.61 km2 for RCP scenarios 4.5 and 8.5; while for 2070, the estimate was 12,487.18 km2 and 9812.94 km2 for RCP scenarios 4.5 and 8.5. For the HadGEM2-ES model for 2050, the estimate was 20,066.40 km2 and 17,079.61 km2; for 2070 it was 17,156.02 km2 and 16,073.70 km2. As proposed areas for conservation of candelilla in the face of climate change, we estimated 5435.06 km2 and 3636.96 km2. The study area was located in the northwest and center of the state of Coahuila, near the natural protected areas of Ocampo and Bajo Rio San Juan, areas that are resilient to climate change. The results obtained provide information on the environmental and site conditions for the establishment of candelilla in Mexico, as well as the geographical areas, such as Sierra y Cañon de Jimulco, Tomás Garrido, 026 Bajo Río San Juan, Zapalinamé, Zapalinamé, and Cumbres de Monterrey Restoration Zones for the conservation of the species under local climate change scenarios. In addition, new areas in the northwest and center of Coahuila could be used to establish new protected areas for this economically important species.

Understanding the ecological role of fire in forests is essential for proper management and conservation programs. The objectives of this study were: (1) to reconstruct the history of fires in a temperate forest in Sierra Madre Occidental; and (2) to interpret the impacts of fire and climate on forest structure. Sixty tree cross-sections with fire scars were analyzed, and descriptive statistics of fire history were generated. Additionally, growth cores were analyzed, and the ages of trees of different diameter categories were calculated. The synchrony between fire history and tree establishment was determined, and precipitation and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) values were correlated with the number of trees established per year. The presence of 137 fire scars was determined, which allowed the reconstruction of 41 fire events over the period 1855–2019; however, only the period 1940–2015 was used to compare tree recruitment, as tree establishment was detected in this period. The mean fire interval (MFI) was 2.28 years in general, and 12.17 years for extensive fires. As regards vegetation, a continuous recruitment pattern was observed, typical of a frequent low-intensity fire regime, although peak regeneration occurred after extensive fires. The correlation analysis showed that the number of trees established per year was influenced by the wet conditions that occurred in December of the previous year and the dry conditions in September and October of the previous year. This finding demonstrates the historical influence of fire and climate on the structure of the current stand in the study area. Therefore, the present study highlights the importance of including fire in forest management programs, considering the natural fire regime to which the species in this ecosystem are already adapted.

Resumen Introducción: Los estudios dendrocronológicos en México se han basado principalmente en las coníferas, mientras que las especies de madera dura han sido poco estudiadas. Este ha sido el caso del género Quercus, con una alta diversidad taxonómica en el país pero que no ha sido estudiado con fines dendrocronológicos, a pesar de los valores ecológicos y económicos de sus especies. Objetivo: En la presente investigación se determinó el potencial dendroclimático de Quercus sideroxyla en el noroeste de México, y su relación con variables climáticas como precipitación y temperatura. Métodos: La investigación se desarrolló en el estado de Durango en el ejido Chavarría Viejo en las coordenadas (23º43’ N & 105º33’ W), se recolectaron muestras de 5 a 7 cm en dos sitios bajo aprovechamiento forestal y se procesaron mediante técnicas dendrocronológicas convencionales. Resultados: Se desarrolló una cronología de ancho de anillo total, la cual se compuso por 30 muestras de 16 árboles para el período de 1917 a 2018 (101 años). Se obtuvieron valores de intercorrelación entre series de 0.43, de sensibilidad media de 0.36, relación señal-ruido de 3.53 y autocorrelación de primer orden (0.58). En cuanto a la relación clima-crecimiento, los valores de índice de ancho de anillo se correlacionaron con datos de la estación climática más cercana al sitio de estudio; donde la precipitación invierno-primavera (enero-mayo) fue la variable de mayor influencia en el crecimiento de la especie. Conclusiones: Con base en los parámetros dendrocronológicos se demuestra el alto potencial de la especie para ser empleada en estudios dendroclimáticos en la región, la respuesta de la especie a la precipitación es similar al de las coníferas con las que cohabita. Abstract Introduction: Dendrochronological studies in Mexico have been mainly based on conifers, while hardwood species have been little studied. This has been the case of the genus Quercus, which has a high taxonomic diversity in the country but has not been previously studied for dendrochronological issues, despite the ecological and economic values of oak species. Objective: In the present investigation, the dendroclimatic potential of Quercus sideroxyla in Northwestern Mexico was determined, as well as its relationship with climatic variables such as precipitation and temperature. Methods: The research was carried out in the state of Durango, Chavarría Viejo with coordinates (23º43’ N & -105º33’ W). Samples of 5 cm to 7cm were collected in two sites under forest exploitation and processed by conventional dendrochronological techniques. Results: A chronology of total ring width was developed, which was composed of 30 samples from 16 trees for the period from 1917 to 2018 (101 years). Inter-series intercorrelation values of 0.43, mean sensitivity of 0.36, signal-to-noise ratio of 3.53 and first-order autocorrelation (0.58) were obtained. Regarding the climate-growth relationship, the ring width index values were correlated with data from the climatic station nearest to the study site, where winter-spring precipitation (January-May) was the variable with the greatest influence on the growth of the species. Conclusions: Based on the dendrochronological parameters, the high potential of the species that were used in dendroclimatic studies in the region has demonstrated that the response of the species to precipitation is similar to that of the conifers with which the Quercus sideroxyla shares its habitat with.

Antecedentes: Los modelos para determinar la idoneidad de hábitat de especies arbóreas es actualmente una herramienta geoespacial relevante en la toma de decisiones. Hipótesis: La idoneidad de hábitat actual y futura permite identificar zonas potenciales para conservación del ahuehuete en México. Especie de estudio: Taxodium mucronatum Ten. Sitio de estudio: México. Métodos: Se emplearon registros de ahuehuete y variables climáticas, edafológicas y topográficas, las cuales se procesaron a través del algoritmo MaxEnt; se estimaron superficies actuales y futuras para los escenarios 2050, 2070 con dos criterios de distribución, idoneidad de hábitat y ecosistema actual o ripario y se identificaron áreas potenciales para conservación. Resultados: Se estimó una superficie de 11,217,706.2 y 48,958.5 ha como áreas de idoneidad de hábitat, bajo los dos criterios, respectivamente. La variable más importante en el modelo fue la temperatura promedio del trimestre más frío. El modelo predice una reducción en superficie potencial de 2,989,580.9 ha y de 7,158,9829.96 ha para 2050 y 2070, respectivamente. La reducción estimada en la superficie actual es de 12,415.3 ha y 32,037.1 ha, para 2050 y 2070, respectivamente. Se identificaron diversas zonas para conservación en los estados de Puebla, Guanajuato, Estado de México y Chiapas. Conclusiones: En el presente estudio, se generó una propuesta para selección de sitios y desarrollo de actividades de conservación y restauración del ahuehuete en México, mediante el algoritmo MaxEnt.

The forests of northern Mexico and the southwestern United States have been subjected to warmer temperatures, persistent drought, and more intense and widespread wildfire. Tree-ring data from four conifer species native to these borderlands forests are compared with regional and large-scale precipitation and temperature data. These species include Abies durangensis, Pinus arizonica, Pinus cembroides, and Pseudotsuga menziesii. Twelve detrended and standardized ring-width chronologies are derived for these four species, all are cross-correlated during their common interval of 1903–2000 (r = 0.567 to 0.738, p < 0.01), and all load positively on the first principal component of radial growth, which alone represents 56% of the variance in the correlation matrix. Correlation with monthly precipitation and temperature data for the study area indicates that all four species respond primarily to precipitation during the cool season of autumn and winter, October–May (r = 0.71, p < 0.01, 1931–2000), and to temperature primarily during the late spring and early summer, January–July (r 0 −0.67, p < 0.01, 1931–2000), in spite of differences in phylogeny and microsite conditions. The instrumental climate data for the region indicate that warmer conditions during the January–July season most relevant to radial growth are beginning to exceed the warmest episode of the 20th century in both intensity and duration. The strong negative correlation between temperature and tree growth indicates that these four conifer species may be challenged by the warmer temperatures forecast in the coming decades for the borderlands region due to anthropogenic forcing. This information could constitute a baseline to analyze the impact of climate change in other regions of Mexico and the USA, where conifer species are of great ecological and socioeconomical importance.

Forests experience disturbances, such as fire, that affect their functioning, structure, and species composition. The objective of this work was to compare the species diversity and forest structure at sites affected by different degrees of fire severity, 9 years after a forest fire event. We used the differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (dNBR) index. Vegetation was sampled in three severity levels: high (HS), moderate (MS), and low (LS) and included the unburned (U) level as control. In addition, we calculated the species richness (S), the Shannon index (H), and the Evenness Index (E). The structural diversity of tree diameters and heights was measured applying the indices H, E, and the coefficient of variation (CV). The differences in the indices calculated across the fire severity levels were determined through analyses of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests. The results showed no significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in the species diversity indices between fire severity levels. The structural diversity of tree diameters and heights was lower at the HS level. dNBR was negatively related to structural diversity; thus, it is concluded that HS tends to reduce structural variability in terms of diameter, height, and age. These results provide a baseline to understand how fire can modify forest structure and species diversity.

The oak species Q. crassifolia produces reliable annual rings with better climatic sensitivity than many conifer species commonly used for hydroclimatic reconstructions in Mexico. Most dendrochronological research in Mexico has been done with conifers, but broadleaf species have been underutilized. Mexican oaks are found among those species receiving limited attention for dendrochronological purposes, despite Mexico being a primary center of oak diversity with over 160 species. The objectives of this study were: (1) date the annual radial increments of oaks (Quercus crassifolia Bonpl.), and (2) analyze the dendrochronological potential and climatic response of the species to reconstruct historical climatic variability and the influence of ocean–atmospheric modes. The study was located at the Barajas site, municipality of Tepehuanes, Durango, Mexico. Wood samples consisted of 60 cross sections, 30 of them obtained at the base of the stem, and 30 more ca. 20–30 cm above the first cross section, which were analyzed by dendrochronological techniques. A tree-ring width chronology 177 years long (1840–2016) was developed indicating suitable values of series intercorrelation (0.52), mean sensitivity (0.26), signal-to-noise ratio (8.98), first-order autocorrelation (0.21), rbar (0.28), and expressed population signal (0.86) for the period 1890–2016. Dendrochronological parameters were similar or superior to those obtained from conifer species in the region. Season-to-season persistence of soil moisture drought varies across North America. Such interseasonal autocorrelation can have modest skill in forecasting future conditions several months in advance. Because robust instrumental observations of precipitation span less than 100 years, the temporal stability of the relationship between seasonal moisture anomalies is uncertain. The North American Seasonal Precipitation Atlas (NASPA) is a gridded network of separately reconstructed cool-season (December–April) and warm-season (May–July) precipitation series and offers new insights on the intra-annual changes in drought for up to 2000 years. Here, the NASPA precipitation reconstructions are rescaled to represent the long-term soil moisture balance during the cool season and 3-month-long atmospheric moisture during the warm season. These rescaled seasonal reconstructions are then used to quantify the frequency, magnitude, and spatial extent of cool-season drought that was relieved or reversed during the following summer months. The adjusted seasonal reconstructions reproduce the general patterns of large-scale drought amelioration and termination in the instrumental record during the twentieth century and are used to estimate relief and reversals for the most skillfully reconstructed past 500 years. Subcontinental-to-continental-scale reversals of cool-season drought in the following warm season have been rare, but the reconstructions display periods prior to the instrumental data of increased reversal probabilities for the mid-Atlantic region and the U.S. Southwest. Drought relief at the continental scale may arise in part from macroscale ocean–atmosphere processes, whereas the smaller-scale regional reversals may reflect land surface feedbacks and stochastic variability.

Introduction: Basal area increment (BAI) is an indicator of forest productivity that varies with tree age and site factors such as soil and climate. Objective: To generate tree-ring width index (RWI) and BAI chronologies of Pinus hartwegii Lindl., relate them to climatic variables, and study the variation in BAI at different altitudes and aspects. Materials and methods: Four observation sites were identified, combining northwest (NW) and southwest (SW) aspects, as well as altitudes of 3 800 and 3 700 m. At each site, the temperature was recorded every four hours for 435 days and 32 growth ring segments were collected using a Pressler´s increment borer. Tree-ring width was measured and BAI was calculated; the correlation index between these indicators and the climatic variables was Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Results and discussion: The RWI series from the four observation sites had an intercorrelation of 0.33 (P < 0.01). Two low-growth periods were detected, one between 1950 and 1960 and the other between 1990 and 2005. Site SO-3700 had a different growth pattern, due to a second growth phase beginning in 1978, possibly a benefit resulting from increased temperature. The previous autumn temperature, spring temperature and April-September precipitation of the current year explained the variation in BAI (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The BAI of P. hartwegii could respond favorably to the predicted increases in temperature at an altitude of 3 700 m with southwest aspect.

Pinus greggii is a species of socio-economic importance in terms of wood production and environmental services in Mexico, though it is restricted by particular environmental conditions to the Sierra Madre Occidental. Species distribution models are geospatial tools widely used in the identification and delineation of species’ distribution areas and zones susceptible to climate change. The objectives of this study were to: (i) model and quantify the environmentally suitable area for Pinus greggii in Mexico, and possible future distributions under four different scenarios of climate change; (ii) identify the most relevant environmental variables that will possibly drive changes in future distribution; and (iii) to propose adequate zones for the species’ conservation in Mexico. Some 438 records of Pinus greggii from several national and international databases were obtained, and duplicates were discarded to avoid overestimations in the models. Climatic, edaphic, and topographic variables were used and 100 distribution models for current and future scenarios were generated using the Maxent software. Introduction: Geomorphological processes, such as flash floods, affect the natural growth of trees. From the dating of disturbances in growth rings, historical events useful for the prevention and mitigation of natural hazards were reconstructed. Objectives: To determine the dendrogeomorphological potential of Pinus ponderosa Douglas ex C. Lawson to date and reconstruct flash floods in Los Picos de Davis, Coahuila. Materials and methods: Samples were collected from 19 dead and living trees with evidence of disturbance (impact scars, growth suppression and compression wood). The samples were prepared, dated and analyzed based on dendrogeomorphological techniques. The reconstructed flash floods were related to historical climate information from hurricanes, tropical cyclones and precipitation. Results and discussion: We were able to date 68 % of the samples with evidence of disturbance; the correlation between growth series was significant (r = 0.403; P < 0.001). The most common anomalies were in the form of scars (72 %), growth suppression (20 %) and compression wood (8 %). Ten flash floods were reconstructed. The causative processes were flash floods, caused by extreme hydrometeorological phenomena, including hurricanes “Alex” in 2010, “Dolly” in 2008 and “Claudette” in 2003. There is synchrony between geomorphological processes and hydrometeorological phenomena. Conclusions: P. ponderosa ring disturbances are useful to reconstruct the frequency and distribution of geomorphological processes.

The extreme hydroclimatic events in the Conchos River Basin, are strongly associated with ocean–atmospheric phenomena such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation, Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, the streamflow reconstruction showed the occurrence of up to 10-year droughts. Dendrochronology is a modern science used to study hydroclimatic events through the measurement and standardization of tree-rings. Long-term dendrochronological series contribute to the improvement of our knowledge of past climatic events and provide information for wise management of water resources. The objective of this study was to generate an actualized streamflow volume reconstruction with a regional chronology and identify extreme hydroclimatic events in the Conchos River Basin. We analyzed the hydroclimatic behavior of the streamflow volume through a dendrochronological network in the Basin. The regional earlywood chronology was analyzed by single correlation and principal component analysis, which allowed obtaining the transfer model to determine extreme hydroclimatic events and defined the influence of large-scale ocean–atmospheric phenomena. Dendrochronological series are reliable sources of information to analyze past hydrological and climatological variation that provides useful information for the management of water resources within basins. We analyzed dendrochronological series obtained from the upper Mayo River Basin using principal components analysis to determine a common climatic signal. Although the complete series extended for over 350 years, the representative period common to all series was from 1750 to 2014 (265 years) with an expressed population signal of over 0.85. Climate data (precipitation and temperature) were collected from the North American Land Data Assimilation System 2 model of the Land Data Assimilation System and hydrometrics records were obtained from the National Commission of Water in Mexico. The results of the response function showed an association of mean monthly temperature with the ring width series for the months of December of the previous year, May and October of the year of growth, and seasonally from January to July (r = -0.75, n = 36, p < 0.05). A significant response to rainfall of earlywood growth was observed for June, November, and December of the previous year, January and February of the growth year, and seasonally, from October of previous year to May of the current growth year (r = 0.70, n = 35, p < 0.05). Significant association also was found between earlywood and the accumulated runoff from October of the previous year to May of the growth year, which was used for reconstruction of the runoff flow between 1750 and 2014, which showed evidence of decadal drought. Significant correlation was found between the reconstructed runoff series, and the Southern Oscillation index (r = -0.42, n = 228, p < 0.05), but not significant with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation index (r = 0.16, n = 115, p < 0.05). We also observed significant (p < 0.05) associations with the drought indices Palmer Drought Severity Index and Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (r = 0.56, r = 0.41, respectively). Our study demonstrated the potential of assimilated data for dendroclimatic reconstructions and the feasibility of generating hydroclimatic information of extreme events that have not been recorded in the available climatic and hydrological instrumental records.

Cool- and warm-season precipitation totals have been reconstructed on a gridded basis for North America using 439 tree-ring chronologies correlated with December–April totals and 547 different chronologies correlated with May–July totals. These discrete seasonal chronologies are not significantly correlated with the alternate season; the December–April reconstructions are skillful over most of the southern and western United States and north-central Mexico, and the May–July estimates have skill over most of the United States, southwestern Canada, and northeastern Mexico. Both the strong continent-wide El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal embedded in the cool-season reconstructions and the Arctic Oscillation signal registered by the warm-season estimates faithfully reproduce the sign, intensity, and spatial patterns of these ocean–atmospheric influences on North American precipitation as recorded with instrumental data. The reconstructions are included in the North American Seasonal Precipitation Atlas (NASPA) and provide insight into decadal droughts and pluvials. They indicate that the sixteenth-century megadrought, the most severe and sustained North American drought of the past 500 years, was the combined result of three distinct seasonal droughts, each bearing unique spatial patterns potentially associated with seasonal forcing from ENSO, the Arctic Oscillation, and the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation. Significant 200–500-yr-long trends toward increased precipitation have been detected in the cool- and warm-season reconstructions for eastern North America. These seasonal precipitation changes appear to be part of the positive moisture trend measured in other paleoclimate proxies for the eastern area that began as a result of natural forcing before the industrial revolution and may have recently been enhanced by anthropogenic climate change.

Tree rings have been used to reconstruct climatological variables in many locations around the world. Moreover, tree-rings can provide valuable insights into climatic variability of the last few centuries and, in some areas, several millennia. Despite the important development, that dendrochronology has had in recent decades to study the dendroclimatic potential of a large number of species present in different ecosystems, much remains to be done and explored. In addition to this, in the last few years more people (students, teachers and researchers) around the world are interested in implementing this science to extend the timeline of climate information backwards and understand how climate has changed on scales of decades, centuries or millennia. Therefore, the objective of this work is to describe the general aspects and basic steps needed to conduct a tree-ring climate reconstruction, from site selection and field sampling to laboratory methods and data analysis. In this method's video and manuscript, the general basis in tree-ring climatic reconstructions is explained so newcomers and students can use it as an available guide into this field of research.

An assemblage of tree-ring chronologies for the Nazas (NZW) in the Western Sierra Madre (WSM), Mexico was developed to determine water inflow at the Lazaro Cardenas Dam (LCD), the main source of water for surface irrigation in the Irrigation District 017 (DDR 017), Comarca Lagunera. A Principal Component Analysis of the ring-width chronologies was conducted to determine a common climate signal, and a stepwise model based on selected chronologies of the PC1 (CBA, COC) and PC2 (ARN) were used to develop a water inflow reconstruction to the Lazaro Cardenas Dam (LCD) extending from 1753 to 2003 (251 years), resulting in the following significant findings: the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the winter-spring season had a significant influence (SOI; Dec–Feb = −0.24, p < 0.01), but the North American Monsoon System (NAMS) was the most important in determining the water yield in the summer season (r = 0.48, p < 0.01). Water gauge inflow records (77 years) at the LCD used to determine the annual allocation of water for agriculture in the irrigation district 017 was an average of 1676 × 106 m3, where the maximum annual water outflow allowed of 1100 × 106 m3 for safety reasons, the dam infrastructure was released in 74% of the years and increasing to 78% when considering the reconstructed inflow. Prolonged drought episodes lasting more than 10 consecutive years were detected in the reconstructed inflow, information that could be used by decision makers to establish proper irrigation management strategies to ameliorate the economic and social impact when these extreme hydroclimatic events may occur.

Baldcypress, a long-lived species of riparian habitats, is sensitive to interannual climate variability. The annual radial growth is associated with the Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI) and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), both depending on a water balance. The baldcypress (Taxodium mucronatum Ten.) is a long-lived species and Mexico’s national tree. The objective of this study was to analyze the dendroclimatic response of baldcypress at sites located on the transitional zone between the semiarid and subtropical regions of Mexico, known as the Middle Zone of the state of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The first site, Los Peroles (LPO), is a wetland where the oldest known baldcypress specimens in Mexico are found. The second site, Rio Verde (RVDE), is a riparian site located along a tributary of the Moctezuma River that drains into the Gulf of Mexico. Two ring-width chronologies were analyzed. The first one from LPO with a length of 633 years and the second one from RVDE with a length of 423 years. The species responded positively to the seasonal January–July precipitation (r = 0.52, p = 0.001) and negatively to the maximum monthly temperature of January, May, and June (r = − 0.42, −0.46, and −0.34; respectively). The average chronology was significantly associated with the mean January–August Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI) (r = 0.62, p = 0.000). An SPEI reconstruction was developed for the period 1575–1996 where the most prolonged and severe droughts were found at 70-year peaks in the El Nino Southern Oscillation frequency band. The annual radial growth of the species is a suitable indicator of the January–August water availability, and is important information that can be used to establish water management strategies for this semiarid environment and to preserve millennial baldcypress specimens.

Volcanic activity can have a significant effect on the growth and survival of trees. The objective of our research was to analyze the effects of the 1855–1856 eruption of the Tacaná volcano and the ashfall from the 1902 eruption of the Santa María volcano, Guatemala, on the radial growth of trees at Tacaná. Dendrochronological sampling was carried out on sites covered by Pinus hartwegii Lindl., and a ring-width chronology was built using 102 increment cores from 75 trees. The ring-width chronology shows two statistically significant suppression events. One of these events occurred from 1857 to 1868 and was potentially caused by the historic eruption of Tacaná (1855–1856). The second suppression event occurred from 1903 to 1908, during which tree growth was affected 1 year after the ashfall caused by the 1902 eruption of Santa María. The growth suppression did not have the same magnitude in all sampled trees and may be related to the thickness of the ash layer deposited around each tree. For the first time, we show that tree growth at Tacaná is reduced by ashfall from volcanic eruptions. Our results may contribute to the evaluation of risks associated with the volcanic activity of the Tacaná volcano.

Introduction: In the United States of America, forest pests are associated with climate variability. Such studies are scarce in Mexico. Objectives: To create a data base of historical outbreaks of bark beetles and analyze their relationship with drought. Materials and methods: Historical records of outbreaks of bark beetles were obtained from official documents in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. Dendroclimatic indices were used as a climate proxy. The relationship between pest outbreaks and climate was analyzed with the Superpose Epoch Analysis (SEA). Results and discussion: A database of 120 years (1895-2015) of bark beetle outbreaks was created. The most frequent species were Dendroctonus mexicanus Hopkins, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimmermann and Dendroctonus adjunctus Blandford. A total of 106 records of outbreaks in 15 states of Mexico were recorded during the period 1903-2015; 16 outbreaks in Guatemala during the period 1895-2013, and 15 outbreaks in Honduras during the period 1962-2015. Historically, outbreaks were recorded in years with below-average precipitation (550 mm) and have increased since 1970. The SEA determined that bark beetle outbreaks in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras were recorded during dry years (P 0.05) of NINO 3 and PDSI (Palmer Drought Severity Index) and significant negative indices (P Conclusion: A significant relationship was determined between bark beetle outbreaks and drought conditions for the last 120 years.

The oyamel forests, as Abies dominated forests are commonly known as, register their largest distribution (95% of their population) along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). Although efforts have been made to study these forests with various approaches, dendrochronology-based studies have been limited, particularly in pure Abies forests in this region. The objective of this study was to reconstruct fire regimes in an Abies religiosa forest in the Sierra Norte in the state of Puebla, Mexico. Within an area of 50-ha, we collected 40 fire-scar samples, which were processed and analyzed using dendrochronological techniques to identify 153 fire scars. The fire history was reconstructed for a period of 118 years (1896–2013), with low severity surface fires occurring mainly during in the spring (92.8%) and summer (7.2%). Over the past century, fires were frequent, with an mean fire interval (MFI) and Weibull median probability of (WMPI) of five years when considering all fire scars and less than 10 years for fires covering larger areas (fires recorded by ≥25% of samples). Extensive fires were synchronized with drought conditions based on Ring Width Indexes, Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) and El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). After 1983, we observed a change in fire frequencies attributed to regulated management. Longer fire intervals within the last several decades are likely leading to increased fuel accumulations and could potentially result in more severe fires in the future, threatening the sustainability of these forests. Based on our finding, we recommend management actions (silvicultural or prescribed fire) to reduce fuels and the risk of severe fires, particularly in the face of climatic changes.

Resumen Introducción: La determinación del clima en cuencas productoras de agua, como la del río Sabinas, Coahuila, donde no existe información de su variabilidad, se puede estimar mediante anillos de crecimiento de ahuehuete (Taxodium mucronatum Ten.), especie longeva con anillos bien definidos, presente en las zonas ribereñas, constituye un “proxy” o método indirecto de la variabilidad climática interanual y multianual. Objetivo: Desarrollar una reconstrucción estacional de precipitación y temperatura máxima y analizar la influencia que ejercen fenómenos de circulación global en el crecimiento de la especie. Métodos: Los núcleos de crecimiento de T. mucronatum fueron datados a través de técnicas dendrocronológicas para producir una serie de ancho de anillo. Se utilizaron datos de mallas del clima de dos bases de datos para desarrollar el análisis de la función de respuesta con fines de reconstrucción climática. Resultados: Una cronología de anillo total de 218 años (1808-2018) se desarrolló con especímenes de T. mucronatum en parajes del Río Sabinas, con la que se generó una reconstrucción estacional de precipitación abril-junio y de temperatura máxima junio-julio. El periodo detectado más seco se presentó de 1815 a 1818 con una precipitación de 27.39 mm y una temperatura máxima de 41.16 °C; mientras que el año más húmedo fue 1828 con 393.72 mm. La cronología de anillo total se correlacionó con los índices de sequía SPEI y PDSI, y con índices de fenómenos atmosféricos como El Niño Oscilación del Sur, a través del Índice de Oscilación del Sur (SOI) y el índice Multivariado (MEI); Oscilación Decadal del Pacífico (PDO) y Oscilación Multidecadal del Atlántico (AMO). La relación entre el índice de anillo total y el del Índice Estandarizado de Precipitación Evaporación (SPEI) mostró significancia en el mes de junio (r = 0.52, P < 0.01), al igual que el Índice de Severidad de Sequía del Palmer (PDSI), PDSI anual (r = 0.38, P < 0.05). El SOI reconstruido noviembre-febrero, se asoció significativamente con la serie dendrocronológica (r = -0.41, P < 0.01). La Oscilación Decadal del Pacífico y la Oscilación Multidecadal del Atlántico, no mostraron significancia. Conclusiones: En este estudio, desarrollamos una función de respuesta climática y reconstruimos variables climáticas estacionales (precipitación, temperatura máxima) de importancia para desarrollar estrategias de manejo para la conservación de T. mucronatum en esta cuenca, e implementar acciones de mitigación para la presencia de eventos climáticos extremos que se pueden presentar en los próximos años. Abstract Introduction: Dendroclimatic reconstructions in water-yield basins lacking hydroclimatic data, such as the Rio Sabinas is important to analyze its interannual and multiannual climatic variability. One of the species useful for this purpose is the Montezuma baldcypress (Taxodium mucronatum Ten.), a long-lived species with well-defined annual rings, present along the riparian zone of the Rio Sabinas that constitutes a “proxy” of interannual and multiannual climate variability. Objective: Develop a seasonal precipitation and maximum temperature reconstructions, and to analyze the influence of global circulatory modes on the species annual radial increase. Methods: Increment cores of the Montezuma baldcypress specimens were dated through dendrochronological techniques to produce a ring-width series. Climate gridded data from two databases were used to develop a response function analysis for climate reconstruction purposes. Results: A ring-width chronology extending from 1808 to 2018 (211 years) was developed and used to develop a seasonal April-June precipitation and a mean June-July maximum temperature reconstruction. The driest period detected on the rainfall reconstruction occurred from 1815 to 1818 with 27.4 mm and a maximum temperature of 41.2 °C; while the wettest year was 1828 with 393.72 mm. The ring-width chronology was correlated with the Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index (SPEI) and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), and with indices of atmospheric phenomena such as El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), through the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and the Multivariate Index (MEI); Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). The relationship between the ring-width series and drought indices (SPEI, PDSI) was significant in June (r = 0.52, P < 0.01), and June-August (r = 0.38, P < 0.05) for the SPEI and reconstructed PDSI, respectively. It was found a significant association between the ring-width chronology and the reconstructed November-February SOI (r = -0.41, P < 0.01). The Pacific Decadal Oscillation and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation were not significant. Conclusions: On this study, we developed a climatic response function and reconstructed seasonal climatic variables (precipitation, maximum temperature) of importance to develop management strategies for conservation of the Montezuma bald cypress on this basin, and to implement mitigation actions for the presence of extreme climatic events that may occur in coming years.

In recent decades, droughts associated with climate change have increased in frequency and intensity. Given this trend, the understanding of climate variability over time has raised great interest. The main objective of this study was to reconstruct the standardized precipitation-evapotranspiration index (SPEI) from tree rings of Pinus durangensis Martinez at a representative site in the western region of the Durango State, Mexico. To this end, we used radii of 286 cross-sections, which were processed through conventional dendrochronological techniques. In addition, chronologies of total ring and early and latewood were generated, covering 296 years. In parallel, we analyzed the association between the chronologies obtained and the cumulative SPEI for 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. The earlywood residual chronology (EWres) showed the closest association with the six-month cumulative SPEI for February–May (SPEI6FM). Thus, the SPEI6FM for the past 296 years was reconstructed through a simple linear regression model. In this reconstruction, 18% of the years were wet, 16% dry, and 66% average. In addition, an increase in the frequency of droughts was observed from 1880 onwards, which might have been related to the rise in temperature due to climate warming. Therefore, the annual rings of P. durangensis are suitable for use as a proxy for the reconstruction of historical climatic events in this region of northern Mexico.

Jalisco fir (Abies jaliscana) is an endemic tree with restricted distribution, and is considered a Pliocene relict inhabiting the cloud montane forests in the humid-temperate upper zone of western Jalisco Mountains. Despite its ecological importance, to date, there are no studies for this taxon aimed to understand its vulnerability to regional climate variability. We used dendrochronological techniques to investigate tree-ring patterns and the effects of climate variability on the radial growth of Jalisco fir through its elevational range in both southern and northern aspects. We developed tree-ring series that ranged in length from 79 to 152 years. High-elevation trees (2400 m.a.s.l.) showed higher annual radial growth compared to those present in low-elevation sites. Over the last 150 years, Abies jaliscana trees have had higher annual radial growth rates compared to those exhibited by other Abies species. Both winter and early spring precipitation are the main factors determining the growth rates at all the elevation sites for both aspects. In the cold season, mean maximum temperature negatively affected ring-width growth at most of the elevation zones except for two study sites. We conclude that the radial growth of A. jaliscana appears to be smaller during lower rainfall periods in the dry seasons (winter and early spring), and A. jaliscana annual radial growth responds differently to regional climate variability along the elevational gradient and mountain aspects.

Droughts are a climatic phenomenon with local, regional, and large-scale repercussions. Historical knowledge of droughts generated by modeled data allows the development of more accurate climate reconstructions to propose better approaches for the management of hydric resources. The objective of this research was to evaluate the association of precipitation and temperature with data from the NLDAS-002 to develop a reconstruction of droughts in the center of Chihuahua, Mexico using the SPEI from tree rings. We also identified the influence of ocean–atmospheric phenomena on the reconstructed drought index. The best association among chronologies was obtained with the earlywood band and accumulated seasonal precipitation from November of the previous year to June of the current year (r = 0.82, p < 0.05) and for temperature from January to July (r = −0.81, p < 0.05). The reconstructed drought index extended from 1775 to 2017 (243 years), where seven extreme drought events were identified. We found significant correlations between the reconstructed Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (r = 0.46, p < 0.05), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (r = −0.34, p < 0.05), Multivariate El Niño Southern Oscillation Index (r = 0.29, p < 0.05), and Southern Oscillation Index (r = −0.22, p < 0.05). The historical reconstruction of hydroclimatology in the center of Chihuahua is important for planning a long-term assessment and for the management of water resources shared by Mexico and the United States.
