All participants underwent a comprehensive geriatric assessment, including 4-m usual gait speed, and were followed annually.Results: Among the 1,348 participants, women had a slower gait speed than men (mean 0.709 m/s vs 0.850 m/s, P < 0.001). Gait speed was inversely associated with age, frailty index; slow gait speed as classified by sex-specific quartile was associated with the prevalence of common geriatric syndromes. During the mean follow-up period of 21.5 months (SD 7.88), future survival without mortality or institutionalization was affected by sex-specific gait-speed quartile (log rank test P < 0.001): the 1st quartile of sex-specific gait speed was associated with increased risk of death or institutionalization.Conclusion: Gait speed was related to age, sex, frailty status, and geriatric health outcomes in Korean rural community-dwelling older adults. Since this gait-speed distribution in an older Korean population differs from previous data on other populations, we should consider a gait-speed cutoff value based on sex-specific quartiles to prevent misclassification in sarcopenia and frailty diagnosis. This paper introduces a proof of concept for a dual-band electrochromic (EC) device to modulate solar light transmission across visible and near-infrared regions selectively. EC materials based on ion insertion/extraction mechanisms also present the possibility for energy storage, widening its functionality to the supercapacitor platform. The bi-functional performance of dual-band radiation control and energy storage was achieved by exploiting two earth-abundant metal oxides that could absorb two different spectral regions when electrochemically charged. The bilayer structure was prepared using a one-step hydrothermal method, which produced Nb 2 O 5 -TiO 2 bilayer on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conducting glass substrates. The nano-dimensions of the active materials endorse the development of high-transparency thin film under open circuit conditions. The variations in the TiO 2 annealing temperature influence the crystallinity and surface morphology of the thin films, which influence the performance of dual-band EC energy storage. The well-optimized NT-500 sample facilitated exclusive electron-charge transport, producing excellent electrochemical performance in dual-band EC and energy storage. A large optical modulation of 80.4 % and 89.8 % at 600 nm and 800 nm (near-infrared) was achieved with an enhanced areal capacitance of 88.1 mF/cm 2 and excellent cycling stability after continuous coloring/bleaching cycles for 18,000 s. This paper presents a prototype bi-functional device based on NT-500, which showed independent control and modulation of visible and near-infrared transmittance. Notably, the device retained excellent energy storage performance alongside its advanced optical functionalities. Soybean (Glycine max), a crucial global crop, experiences yearly yield reduction due to diseases such as anthracnose (Colletotrichum truncatum) and root rot (Fusarium spp.). The use of fungicides, which have traditionally been employed to control these phytopathogens, is now facing challenges due to the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains. Streptomyces bacillaris S8 strain S8 is previously known to produce valinomycin t through a nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) pathway. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of S. bacillaris S8 against C. truncatum and Fusarium sp., assessing its efficacy against soybean pathogens. The results indicate that strain S8 effectively controlled both above-ground and underground soybean diseases, using the NRPS and NRPS-related compound, suggesting its potential as a biological control in plant-microbe interactions. These findings underscore the pivotal role of the stain S8 in fostering healthy soybean microbial communities and emphasize the significance of microbiota structure studies in unveiling potent biocontrol agents.

Background: This study evaluated the prevalence and types of intracranial lesions through dedicated imaging analysis of primary headaches in children and compared them between patients with and without migraine., Methods: This study included 190 children diagnosed with primary headache who underwent neuroimaging, including brain computed tomography (CT), CT angiography (CTA), and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All patients with primary headaches was divided into two groups, namely, the migraine and non-migraine groups, on the basis of data from electronic medical records. Clinical characteristics and imaging findings were evaluated and compared between the two groups., Results: Patients with migraine were old and had a longer period from symptom onset to diagnosis. CT was normal in 71 of 95 patients, whereas 7 of 29 patients who underwent CTA had vascular lesions; the migraine group (n = 6/20, [30%]) had higher incidence of vascular lesions than the non-migraine group (n = 1/9, [11.1%]); however, there was no statistically significant difference (p = 0.382). Furthermore, 57.5% (61/106) of children showed normal brain MRI. The most common brain MRI finding was dilated perivascular space (n = 18, [16.8%]). Most perivascular spaces were located in the basal ganglia (n = 72, [75.8%]) and were in linear patterns (n = 58, [63.0%]). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups., Conclusion: A low prevalence of significant abnormalities was found in children with primary headaches. Dilated perivascular space was the most common finding in both groups on MRI. CTA showed more vascular lesions in the migraine group than in the non-migraine group. Global-warming-induced climate changes and socioeconomic issues increasingly stimulate reviews of renewable energy. Among energy-generation devices, solar cells are often considered as renewable sources of energy. Lately, transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) are playing a significant role as back/front contact electrodes in silicon heterojunction solar cells (SHJ SCs). In particular, the optimized Sn-doped In 2 O 3 (ITO) has served as a capable TCO material to improve the efficiency of SHJ SCs, due to excellent physicochemical properties such as high transmittance, electrical conductivity, mobility, bandgap, and a low refractive index. The doped-ITO thin films had promising characteristics and helped in promoting the efficiency of SHJ SCs. Further, SHJ technology, together with an interdigitated back contact structure, achieved an outstanding efficiency of 26.7%. The present article discusses the deposition of TCO films by various techniques, parameters affecting TCO properties, characteristics of doped and undoped TCO materials, and their influence on SHJ SC efficiency, based on a review of ongoing research and development activities.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has affected millions of people worldwide since its emergence in 2019. Knowing the potential capacity of the virus to adapt to other species, the serological surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 infection in susceptible animals is important. Hong Kong and Seoul are two of Asia's most densely populated urban cities, where companion animals often live in close contact with humans. Sera collected from 1040 cats and 855 dogs during the early phase of the pandemic in Hong Kong and Seoul were tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies using an ELISA that detects antibodies against the receptor binding domain of the viral spike protein. Positive sera were also tested for virus neutralizing antibodies using a surrogate virus neutralization (sVNT) and plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT). Among feline sera, 4.51% and 2.54% of the samples from Korea and Hong Kong, respectively, tested ELISA positive. However, only 1.64% of the samples from Korea and 0.18% from Hong Kong tested positive by sVNT, while only 0.41% of samples from Korea tested positive by PRNT. Among canine samples, 4.94% and 6.46% from Korea and Hong Kong, respectively, tested positive by ELISA, while only 0.29% of sera from Korea were positive on sVNT and no canine sera tested positive by PRNT. These results confirm a low seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 exposure in companion animals in Korea and Hong Kong. The discordance between the RBD-ELISA and neutralization tests may indicate possible ELISA cross-reactivity with other coronaviruses, especially in canine sera.

High-precision position estimations of agricultural mobile robots (AMRs) are crucial for implementing control instructions. Although the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) and real-time kinematic GNSS (RTK-GNSS) provide high-precision positioning, the AMR accuracy decreases when the signals interfere with buildings or trees. An improved position estimation algorithm based on multisensor fusion and autoencoder neural network is proposed. The multisensor, RTK-GNSS, inertial-measurement-unit, and dual-rotary-encoder data are fused with Extended Kalman filter (EKF). To optimize the EKF noise matrix, the autoencoder and radial basis function (ARBF) neural network was used for modeling the state equation noise and EKF measurement equation. A multisensor AMR test platform was constructed for static experiments to estimate the circular error probability and twice-the-distance root-mean-squared criteria. Dynamic experiments were conducted on road, grass, and field environments. To validate the robustness of the proposed algorithm, abnormal working conditions of the sensors were tested on the road. The results showed that the positioning estimation accuracy was improved compared to the RTK-GNSS in all three environments. When the RTK-GNSS signal experienced interference or rotary encoders failed, the system could still improve the position estimation accuracy. The proposed system and optimization algorithm are thus significant for improving AMR position prediction performance.

Background: Plants in nature interact with other species, among which are mutualistic microorganisms that affect plant health. The co-existence of microbial symbionts with the host contributes to host fitness in a natural context. In turn, the composition of the plant microbiota responds to the environment and the state of the host, raising the possibility that it can be engineered to benefit the plant. However, technology for engineering the structure of the plant microbiome is not yet available., Results: The loss of diversity and reduction in population density of Streptomyces globisporus SP6C4, a core microbe, was observed coincident with the aging of strawberry plants. Here, we show that glutamic acid reshapes the plant microbial community and enriches populations of Streptomyces, a functional core microbe in the strawberry anthosphere. Similarly, in the tomato rhizosphere, treatment with glutamic acid increased the population sizes of Streptomyces as well as those of Bacillaceae and Burkholderiaceae. At the same time, diseases caused by species of Botrytis and Fusarium were significantly reduced in both habitats. We suggest that glutamic acid directly modulates the composition of the microbiome community., Conclusions: Much is known about the structure of plant-associated microbial communities, but less is understood about how the community composition and complexity are controlled. Our results demonstrate that the intrinsic level of glutamic acid in planta is associated with the composition of the microbiota, which can be modulated by an external supply of a biostimulant. We obtained ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) circular dichroism (CD) spectra of protonated L-phenylalanyl-L-alanine (L-H + PheAla) near the origin band of the S 0 -S 1 transition using cryogenic ion spectroscopy. Infrared (IR) ion-dip, IR-UV hole burning (HB) and UV-UV HB spectra showed that L-H + PheAla existed as two different conformers in a cryogenic ion trap, and they had nearly identical peptide backbones but different conformations in the Phe side chain. The UVPD CD spectra revealed that the two conformers had opposite CD signs and significantly different CD magnitudes from each other. These results demonstrate that the CD value of L-H + PheAla near the origin band is strongly influenced by the conformation of the Phe side chain.

Rationale: Neo-adjuvant systemic therapy includes endocrine therapy and chemotherapy, which is widely used. Luminal breast cancer is resistant to chemotherapy and is more likely to not respond to chemotherapy before surgery. Palbociclib is a cyclin-dependent kinase 4 and 6 inhibitor. Palbociclib with letrozole combination therapy was an effective chemotherapy in metastatic luminal type breast cancer and had fewer side effects; however, the benefit of palbociclib in neoadjuvant systemic therapy is unclear., Patient Concerns: A 50-year-old female patient visited our hospital with palpable lump in the right breast. The lymph nodes fixed in the ipsilateral axilla., Diagnosis: The patient was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast; the nuclear grade was moderate. The ipsilateral fixed lymph node was diagnosed as metastasis. The breast cancer subtype was luminal A type and was positive for estrogen receptor and progesterone receptor, and negative for HER2/neu and Ki-67 marker index <10% on immunohistochemistry., Interventions: Neo-systemic therapy was performed with 3 cycles of adriamycin with docetaxel. After follow-up study, the breast and axillary lesions progressed. Palbociclib with letrozole was administered as second neo-systemic therapy for 10 months. Subsequently, breast-conserving surgery with sentinel lymph node biopsy was performed., Outcomes: In the postoperative pathologic result, 4 mm invasive lesion remained, and the sentinel lymph node biopsy was negative. The results achieved a residual cancer burden classification class 1., Conclusion: Second-line neo-systemic therapy can further reduce the size of the tumor and increase the likelihood of avoiding the side effects of surgery. There is increasing attention being paid to utilizing microbial communities to improve plant health while reducing management inputs. Thus, the objectives of this research were to assess changes in the rhizosphere bacterial community structure associated with long-term turfgrass monoculture and to demonstrate the feasibility of using functional bacteria as beneficial biocontrol agents. Large patch disease, caused by the fungal pathogen Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2, is a significant threat to turfgrass cultivation. Rhizosphere samples were collected from 2-, 13- and 25-year turfgrass ( Zoysia japonica ) monocultures. The 13-year monoculture field had a higher pathogen population density than both the 2- and 25-year monoculture fields. Analyses of the rhizosphere bacterial communities revealed that Streptomyces was dominant in the 2-year field and Burkholderia was enriched in the 25-year field. Based on the culturable rhizosphere bacteria, Streptomyces neyagawaensis J6 and Burkholderia vietnamiensis J10 were obtained from the 2- and 25-year fields, respectively. Application of S. neyagawaensis J6 and B. vietnamiensis J10 led to excellent inhibition of large patch disease as well as enhanced tolerance against drought and temperature stresses. Carbon capture and storage is a popular CO 2 -reduction technology, and carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology has been reported frequently over the years. However, CCU has certain disadvantages, including the requirement of high energy consumption processes such as mineral carbonation. In addition, stable metal sources are required to fix CO 2 . This study used concentrated seawater to supply metal ions. In addition, the selected 5 wt % amine solution changed CO 2 into aqueous CO 2 to reduce the additional energy required to form the metal carbonate under moderate conditions. As a result, precipitates were formed because of the reaction of carbonate radicals with metal ions in the seawater. These precipitates were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and they were found to mostly consist of CaCO 3 and NaCl. Furthermore, it was verified that the conversion solution maintained its CO 2 -loading capacity even after the solids and liquid were filtered twice. Therefore, the proposed method permits a substantial reuse of CO 2 and waste seawater when sufficient metal ions are supplied. Therefore, methods to improve their purity will be developed in future studies.

Purpose: Approval of eribulin for metastatic breast cancer was based on data primarily from Western patients, and there is a paucity of data on the effectiveness and safety of eribulin for Asian patients. To determine the effectiveness and safety of eribulin in Korean women with breast cancer in a real-world setting, we conducted a nationwide, multicenter, retrospective study., Methods: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer who were treated with eribulin in 14 centers throughout Korea were included in this study. Eribulin was generally administered at a dose of 1.23 mg/m 2 (equivalent to 1.4 mg/m 2 eribulin mesylate) by intravenous infusion for 2-5 min, or as a diluted solution, on Days 1 and 8 of every 21-day cycle. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS) rate at 6 months. Secondary endpoints included median PFS, overall survival (OS), time-to-treatment failure (TTF), tumor response rate, and incidence of hematologic treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs)., Results: The safety and full analysis populations included 398 and 360 (38 had no efficacy data) patients, respectively. The PFS rate at 6 months was 37.8%. Median PFS, OS, and TTF were 134, 631, and 120 days, respectively. Objective response rate, clinical benefit rate, and disease control rate were 18.1%, 50.6%, and 49.4%, respectively. The human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is amplified in approximately 20% of breast cancers, and HER2 receptor targeting therapy is associated with a significant improvement in disease-free and overall survival. In several clinical trials, the pathologic complete response (pCR) rate was significantly increased with combined pertuzumab and trastuzumab treatment in HER2-amplified breast cancer. Although the efficacy and safety of anti-HER2 dual blockade therapy has been reported, the markers that predict the response are still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the level of HER2 amplification and the pCR in trastuzumab and pertuzumab neoadjuvant therapy.Twenty-two HER2-amplified early breast cancer patients who had received neoadjuvant docetaxel, carboplatin, trastuzumab, and pertuzumab (TCHP) therapy were included in this study. HER2/CEP17 ratio and average HER2 copy number were measured by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis. The relationship between level of HER2 amplification and tumor pCR status was investigated.The median age was 47.5 years (range, 36-62). 31.8% of the patients were hormone receptor (HR) positive and 68.2%% of the patients were HR negative. The pCR (ypN0/is ypN0) rate in the breast and axilla was 68.2%. The patients who experienced a pCR had a median HER2/CEP17 ratio of 7.08 (range, 3.16-10.40) and average HER2 copy number of 17.00 (range, 5.85-37.50). The patients who did not experience a pCR had a median ratio of 4.70 (range, 1.06-9.00) and median HER2 copy number of 12.00 (range, 5.85-20.95) (P = .030, P = .174), respectively.pCR was highly correlated with HER2/CEP17 ratio in neoadjuvant anti-HER2 dual blockade. This suggests that the HER2/CEP17 ratio can be used as a predictive marker for pCR in neoadjuvant trastuzumab and pertuzumab therapy.

Background: Several oncoplastic approaches have been implemented in recent years to enhance cosmetic results and to reduce complications. The round block technique is a volume displacement technique for breast reconstruction after breast-conserving surgery (BCS). However, its indications are currently limited according to tumor location, and its cosmetic results and complications have not been clearly established. We hypothesized that the round block technique could produce favorable cosmetic results without major complications regardless of tumor location or nipple-tumor distance, below a certain resected tumor volume and tumor-breast volume ratio., Methods: All breast reconstructions using the round block technique after BCS were included in this analysis. Patients' data were reviewed retrospectively to investigate complications during follow-up, and clinical photos were used to evaluate cosmetic results. The relationships of tumor location, nipple-tumor distance, tumor volume, and the tumor-breast volume ratio with cosmetic results were investigated., Results: In total, 108 breasts were reconstructed. The mean resected tumor volume was 30.2±15.0 mL. The cosmetic score was 4.5±0.6 out of 5. Tumor location, nipple-tumor distance, tumor volume, tumor-breast volume ratio, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy had no significant effects on cosmetic results or complications. There were no major complications requiring reoperation., Conclusions: Breast reconstruction using the round block technique after BCS can lead to good cosmetic results without major complications regardless of the tumor location, nipple-tumor distance, radiotherapy, or chemotherapy. Below the maximum tumor volume (79.2 mL) and the maximum tumor-breast volume ratio (14%), favorable results were consistently obtained.

Cypripedium japonicum is known to be the indigenous plant to Korea, Japan, and China. However, C. japonicum represents the most critically endangered plant species in South Korea. The plant is esthetically pleasing due to its flower, which is larger than any other orchidaceous species. Disease symptoms relating to gray mold were observed on C. japonicum in May 2019. The suspected pathogen was successfully isolated from the symptomatic leaf tissue and conducted a pure culture of the fungi. The conidia formed consisted of a colorless or light brown single cell, which was either egg or oval-shaped with a size of 7.1 to 13.4 × 5.2 to 8.6 μm. Molecular phylogenetic relationship analysis was also confirmed that the pathogen concerned belonging to the family of Botrytis cinerea. Members of the genus Paenibacillus are known for their production of useful substances, and some species of the genus are recognized to be plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. Paenibacillus polymyxa TH2H2, isolated from a tomato flower, had antifungal activity. Here, the draft genome sequence of Paenibacillus polymyxa TH2H2 is reported. The 5,983,104-bp genome, with a G+C content of 45.31%, comprised 5,221 protein-coding genes, 64 ribosomal RNA and 100 transfer RNA. Three intact antibiotic biosynthesis gene clusters were identified using antiSMASH. These encoded the antifungal agent fusaricidin and two antibacterial agents, tridecaptin and polymyxin. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra contain information about absolute configurations and conformations of chiral compounds. However, extracting this information from CD spectra in solution is challenging, because the spectra exhibit only the averaged CD values of all different conformers. CD spectroscopy of jet-cooled molecules can provide conformation-specific CD spectra, but its application to biomolecules has been limited due to the difficulty of their production in the gas phase. Here, we obtained the first CD spectra of chiral molecular ions produced by electrospray ionization (ESI) using cold ion CD spectroscopy. Protonated l- or d-phenylalanine ions produced by ESI were stored in a cold quadrupole ion trap and irradiated by multiple laser pulses with left or right circular polarization. The CD spectra exhibited well-resolved CD bands of two conformers, whose signs were opposite to each other. This study will broaden the scope of conformation-resolved CD spectroscopy to large molecular ions without size limitations.

The cultivation of a Streptomyces sp. SD53 strain isolated from the gut of the silkworm Bombyx mori produced two macrolactam natural products, piceamycin ( 1 ) and bombyxamycin C ( 2 ). The planar structures of 1 and 2 were identified by a combination of NMR, MS, and UV spectroscopic analyses. The absolute configurations were assigned based on chemical and chromatographic methods as well as ECD calculations. A new chromatography-based experimental method for determining the configurations of stereogenic centers β to nitrogen atoms in macrolactams was established and successfully applied in this report. These compounds exhibited significant bioactivities against the silkworm entomopathogen Bacillus thuringiensis and various human pathogens as well as human cancer cell lines. In particular, piceamycin potently inhibited Salmonella enterica and Proteus hauseri with MIC values of 0.083 μg/mL and 0.025 μg/mL, respectively. The biosynthetic pathway involved in the formation of the cyclopentenone moiety in piceamycin is discussed.

Microbes can establish mutualistic interactions with plants and insects. Here we track the movement of an endophytic strain of Streptomyces bacteria throughout a managed strawberry ecosystem. We show that a Streptomyces isolate found in the rhizosphere and on flowers protects both the plant and pollinating honeybees from pathogens (phytopathogenic fungus Botrytis cinerea and pathogenic bacteria, respectively). The pollinators can transfer the Streptomyces bacteria among flowers and plants, and Streptomyces can move into the plant vascular bundle from the flowers and from the rhizosphere. Our results present a tripartite mutualism between Streptomyces, plant and pollinator partners.

Visible-blind ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors have received a great deal of attention for realizing Internet of Things technologies as well as for monitoring the level of UV exposure to humans. Realizing next-generation flexible and visible-blind UV photodetectors requires development of new functional material systems with easy fabrication, selectively strong UV light absorption, environmental friendliness, and high stability regardless of ambient conditions. Herein, flexible visible-blind UV photodetectors are successfully fabricated on the basis of two-dimensional ZnAl-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets with scroll structures grown on flexible substrates. The ZnAl-LDH nanosheet scrolls exhibit highly resistive semiconducting properties with a band gap of 3.2 eV and work function of 3.64 eV. The photodetector based on the ZnAl-LDH shows photoresponse in the UV spectral range below 420 nm, indicating visible-blind spectral response. In addition, the UV photodetector shows a maximum responsivity of 17 mA/W under illumination with 365 nm light. Moreover, the flexible photodetector shows reproducible photoresponse even after 1000 bending cycles, which indicates the acceptable stability of the ZnAl-LDH nanosheet scrolls.

Large patch disease, caused by Rhizoctonia solani AG2-2, is the most devastating disease in Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica). Current large patch disease control strategies rely primarily upon the use of chemical pesticides. Streptomyces sp. S8 is known to possess exceptional antagonistic properties that could potentially suppress the large patch pathogen found at turfgrass plantations. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using the strain as a biological control mechanism. Sequencing of the S8 strain genome revealed a valinomycin biosynthesis gene cluster. This cluster is composed of the vlm1 and vlm2 genes, which are known to produce antifungal compounds. In order to verify this finding for the large patch pathogen, a valinomycin biosynthesis knockout mutant was created via the CRISPR/Cas9 system. The mutant lost antifungal activity against the large patch pathogen. Consequently, it is anticipated that eco-friendly microbial preparations derived from the S8 strain can be utilized to biologically control large patch disease.

For kesterite copper zinc tin sulfide/selenide (CZTSSe) solar cells to enter the market, in addition to efficiency improvements, the technological capability to produce flexible and large-area modules with homogeneous properties is necessary. Here, we report a greater than 10% efficiency for a cell area of approximately 0.5 cm 2 and a greater than 8% efficiency for a cell area larger than 2 cm 2 of certified flexible CZTSSe solar cells. By designing a thin and multi-layered precursor structure, the formation of defects and defect clusters, particularly tin-related donor defects, is controlled, and the open circuit voltage value is enhanced. Using statistical analysis, we verify that the cell-to-cell and within-cell uniformity characteristics are improved. This study reports the highest efficiency so far for flexible CZTSSe solar cells with small and large areas. These results also present methods for improving the efficiency and enlarging the cell area.

Streptomyces griseus S4-7 is representative of strains responsible for the specific soil suppressiveness of Fusarium wilt of strawberry caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae. Members of the genus Streptomyces secrete diverse secondary metabolites including lantipeptides, heat-stable lanthionine-containing compounds that can exhibit antibiotic activity. In this study, a class II lantipeptide provisionally named grisin, of previously unknown biological function, was shown to inhibit F. oxysporum. The inhibitory activity of grisin distinguishes it from other class II lantipeptides from Streptomyces spp. Results of quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction with lanM-specific primers showed that the density of grisin-producing Streptomyces spp. in the rhizosphere of strawberry was positively correlated with the number of years of monoculture and a minimum of seven years was required for development of specific soil suppressiveness to Fusarium wilt disease. We suggest that lanM can be used as a diagnostic marker of whether a soil is conducive or suppressive to the disease.

Take-all disease, caused by Gaeumannomyces graminis var. tritici (Ggt), is one of the most serious root diseases in wheat production. In this study, a proteomic platform based on 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight Tandem Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/TOF MS) was used to construct the first proteome database reference map of G. graminis var. tritici and to identify the response of the pathogen to 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG), which is a natural antibiotic produced by antagonistic Pseudomonas spp. in take-all suppressive soils. For mapping, a total of 240 spots was identified that represented 209 different proteins. The most abundant biological function categories in the Ggt proteome were related to carbohydrate metabolism (21%), amino acid metabolism (15%), protein folding and degradation (12%), translation (11%), and stress response (10%). In total, 51 Ggt proteins were affected by DAPG treatment. Based on gene ontology, carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, stress response, and protein folding and degradation proteins were the ones most modulated by DAPG treatment. This study provides the first extensive proteomic reference map constructed for Ggt and represents the first time that the response of Ggt to DAPG has been characterized at the proteomic level., (Copyright © 2018 British Mycological Society. Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se) 2 (CIGS) is a promising photocathode material owing to its high absorption coefficient, adjustable band gap, and suitable band edge for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, most CIGS photocathodes have suffered from instability in applications that require a wide range of pH conditions and have utilized noble metal HER catalysts to achieve a high performance. Thus, improving the durability of the CIGS photocathode under various pH conditions and developing a cost-effective non-noble metal catalyst are critical issues in the photoelectrochemical (PEC) application of this promising photocathode material. Here, we catalyze the CIGS photocathode with Ni-Mo as a non-noble metal to enhance the PEC efficiency, and we employ atomically grown TiO 2 to passivate the CdS/CIGS surface and improve the stability under a wide range of pH conditions. Our Ni-Mo alloy exhibits the best HER catalytic activity among reported earth-abundant HER catalysts in both acidic and alkaline solutions. The Ni-Mo/CdS/CIGS photocathode yields an onset potential of 0.5 V (vs. RHE) and a short-circuit photocurrent density as high as 15-25 mA cm -2 under various pH conditions ranging from 0.4 to 14, which is highly comparable to that of Pt/CdS/CIGS. Furthermore, the passivation of CdS/CIGS with a thin TiO 2 layer, obtained by atomic layer deposition, effectively prevents the photocorrosion of CdS and the dissolution of the Mo back contact, which are the main causes of the degradation of the photocathode. The optimized Ni-Mo/TiO 2 /CdS/CIGS photocathode produces a stable photocurrent density at 0 V RHE for 100 minutes except under strong alkaline conditions. Strawberry Fusarium wilt disease, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae , is the most devastating disease in strawberry production. The pathogen produces chlamydospores which tolerate against harsh environment, fungicide and survive for decades in soil. Development of detection and quantification techniques are regarded significantly in many soilborne pathogens to prevent damage from diseases. In this study, we improved specific-quantitative primers for F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae to reveal correlation between the pathogen density and the disease severity. Standard curve r 2 value of the specific-quantitative primers for qRT-PCR and meting curve were over 0.99 and 80.5°C, respectively. Over pathogen 10 5 cfu/g of soil was required to cause the disease in both lab and field conditions. With the minimum density to develop the wilt disease, the pathogen affected near 60% in nursery plantation. A biological control microbe agent and soil solarization reduced the pathogen population 2-fold and 1.5-fold in soil, respectively. The developed F. oxysporum f. sp. fragariae specific qRT-PCR protocol may contribute to evaluating soil healthiness and appropriate decision making to control the disease.

Flowers of kiwifruit are morphologically hermaphroditic and survivable binucleate pollen is produced by the male flowers. In this study, we investigated microbial diversity in kiwifruit pollens by analyzing amplicon sequences of 16S rRNA. Four pollen samples were collected: 'NZ' was imported from New Zealand, 'CN' from China in year of 2014, respectively. 'KR13' and 'KR14' were collected in 2013' and 2014' in South Korea. Most of the identified bacterial phyla in the four different pollens were Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Firmicutes. However, the imported and the domestic pollen samples showed different aspects of microbial community structures. The domestic pollens had more diverse in diversity than the imported samples. Among top 20 OTUs, Pseudomonas spp. was the most dominant specie. Interestingly, a bacterial pathogen of kiwifruit canker, Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae was detected in 'NZ' by the specific PCR. This study provides insights microbial distribution and community structure information in kiwifruit pollen.

We describe an assembly-disposable microfluidic device based on a silicone-coated release polymer thin film. It consists of a disposable polymeric superstrate and a reusable functional substrate and they are assembled simply using vacuum pressure. The disposable polymeric superstrate is manufactured by bonding a silicone-coated release polymer thin film and a microstructured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) replica, containing only a simple structured microchannel. The reusable functional substrate generates an intricate energy field that can penetrate the micrometer-thick polymer film into the microchannel and control microfluids. This is the first report to introduce a silicone-coated release polyethylene terephthalate (PET) thin film as a bonding layer on a microstructured PDMS replica. The bonding strength was ∼600 kPa, which is the strongest among bonding methods of PDMS and PET polymer. Additionally, accelerated tests for bond stability and leakage demonstrated that the silicone-coated release PET film can form a very robust bond with PDMS. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed assembly-disposable microfluidic device, a lateral magnetophoretic microseparator was developed in an assembly-disposable microfluidic device format and was evaluated for isolating circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from patients with breast cancer.

Although solution processing of small-molecule organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has been considered as a promising alternative to standard vacuum deposition requiring high material and processing cost, the devices have suffered from low luminous efficiency and difficulty of multilayer solution processing. Therefore, high efficiency should be achieved in simple-structured small-molecule OLEDs fabricated using a solution process. We report very efficient solution-processed simple-structured small-molecule OLEDs that use novel universal electron-transporting host materials based on tetraphenylsilane with pyridine moieties. These materials have wide band gaps, high triplet energy levels, and good solution processabilities; they provide balanced charge transport in a mixed-host emitting layer. Orange-red (~97.5 cd/A, ~35.5% photons per electron), green (~101.5 cd/A, ~29.0% photons per electron), and white (~74.2 cd/A, ~28.5% photons per electron) phosphorescent OLEDs exhibited the highest recorded electroluminescent efficiencies of solution-processed OLEDs reported to date. We also demonstrate a solution-processed flexible solid-state lighting device as a potential application of our devices.

Strawberry bacterial angular leaf spot (ALS) disease, caused by Xanthomonas fragariae has become increasingly problematic in the strawberry agro-industry. ALS causes small angular water-soaked lesions to develop on the abaxial leaf surface. Studies reported optimum temperature conditions for X. fragariae are 20°C and the pathogen suffers mortality above 32°C. However, at the nursery stage, disease symptoms have been observed under high temperature conditions. In the present study, results showed X. fragariae transmission was via infected maternal plants, precipitation, and sprinkler irrigation systems. Systemic infections were detected using X. fragariae specific primers 245A/B and 295A/B, where 300-bp and 615-bp were respectively amplified. During the nursery stage (from May to August), the pathogen was PCR detected only in maternal plants, but not in soil or irrigation water through the nursery stage. During the cultivation period, from September to March, the pathogen was detected in maternal plants, progeny, and soil, but not in water. Additionally, un-infected plants, when planted with infected plants were positive for X. fragariae via PCR at the late cultivation stage. Chemical control for X. fragariae with oxolinic acid showed 87% control effects against the disease during the nursery period, in contrast to validamycin-A, which exhibited increased efficacy against the disease during the cultivation stage (control effect 95%). To our knowledge, this is the first epidemiological study of X. fragariae in Korean strawberry fields.

Wide bandgap Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) thin films were deposited on Ga-rich Ga:ZnO (GZO) or MoN/GZO by single-stage co-evaporation. CIGS/TCO interface phases, such as resistive n-type Ga2O3, which are likely to have formed during the high temperature growth of Ga-rich CIGS, can deteriorate the solar cell performance. Although some Ga accumulation was observed in both of the CIGS/GZO and CIGS/MoN/GZO interfaces formed at 520 degrees C, the Ga oxide layer was absent. On the other hand, their current-voltage characteristics showed strong roll-over behavior regardless of the MoN diffusion barrier. The strong Schottky barrier formation at the CLGS/GZO junction due to the low work function of GZO, was attributed to current blocking at a high forward bias.

A series of small molecules that contained identical π-spacers (ethyne), a central diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) unit, and different aromatic electron-donating end-groups were synthesized and used in organic solar cells (OSCs) to study the effect of electron-donating groups on the device performance. The three compounds, DPP-A-Ph, DPP-A-Na, and DPP-A-An, possessed intense absorption bands that covered a wide range, from 350 to 750 nm, and relatively low HOMO energy levels, from -5.50 to -5.55 eV. DPP-A-An, which contained anthracene end-groups, demonstrated a stronger absorbance and a higher hole mobility than DPP-A-Ph, which contained phenyl groups, and DPP-A-Na, which contained naphthalene units. The power-conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of OSCs based on organic:PC71BM blends (1:1, w/w) with a processed DIO additive were 3.93% for DPP-A-An, 3.02% for DPP-Na, and 2.26% for DPP-A-Ph. These findings suggest that a DPP core that is functionalized with electron-donating capping groups constitutes a promising new class of solution-processable small molecules for OSC applications., (© 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A new poly(octathiophene) based copolymer was designed and synthesized by the palladium catalyzed Suzuki coupling reaction. The structure of the newly obtained copolymer was confirmed by 1H-NMR and IR. The number-average molecular weight (M(n)) of the polymer was 36,000 with a poly-dispersity index of 1.15. The polymer has good solubility in common solvents such as chloroform, toluene, chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene and tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. The optical, thermal and electrochemical properties of the polymer were characterized by UV-vis absorption, TGA and DSC and cyclovoltametry, respectively. A thin film transistor using the new polymer as an organic semiconductor was found to exhibit typical p-channel FET characteristics with a hole mobility of 5 x 10(-4) cm2/Vs.

Background: Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy system (VAB) is an alternative modality to core needle biopsy for the diagnosis of breast lesions., Material and Methods: Fifty-four patients who underwent ultrasound-guided VAB procedures were analyzed. Patients were categorized into two groups: The first 20 consecutive patients as group A and the next 34 consecutive patients as group B., Results: Fifty-two patients underwent excision, and two underwent biopsy only. Moving average curves showed a plateau phase for performing VAB procedures after the 20(th) patient. Total operation times of group B were significantly shorter than those of group A (p < 0.001). Complication rates in group B tended to be lower, and VAB probe position of group B tended to be better than that of group A, but these differences were not statistically significant., Conclusion: Our data suggest the existence of a learning curve for ultrasound-guided VAB procedures. VAB procedures can be performed safely, even during the early learning period.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of various technical parameters for dose optimization in pediatric chest radiological examinations by evaluating effective dose and effective detective quantum efficiency (eDQE)., Materials and Methods: For tube voltages ranging from 40 to 90 kV in 10 kV increments at the focus-to-detector distance (FDD) of 100, 110, 120, 150, 180 cm, the eDQE was evaluated at same effective dose., Results: The eDQE was considerably higher without the use of the grid on equivalent effective dose. This indicates that the reduction of scatter radiation did not compensate for the loss of absorbed effective photons in the grid. The eDQE increased with increasing FDD because of the greater effective modulation transfer function (eMTF) with lower focal spot blurring. However, most of the major hospitals in Korea employed a short FDD of 100 cm with the grid. The entrance surface air kerma values for the hospitals of this survey exceeded the Korean reference level of 100 μGy., Conclusions: The different reference levels might be appropriate for the same examination conducted on children of different ages. Also, it is necessary to refine the technical parameters to perform pediatric chest examinations.

Background: This study was designed to evaluate the impact of lack of either estrogen receptor (ER) or progesterone receptor (PR) on characteristics and outcomes among luminal A breast cancer subtype treated with endocrine with or without chemotherapeutic agents., Methods: The luminal A subtype was categorized into three subgroups: ER+/PR+, ER+/PR-, and ER-/PR+. All tumors were human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) negative. Clinicopathological features and survival were analyzed using the Severance Hospital dataset (n = 1,180) and were validated by the nationwide Korean Breast Cancer Society (KBCS) registry (n = 9,916)., Results: Despite the different distribution of ER/PR status, tumor stage, grade, and local therapies between the two datasets, similarly ER+/PR+ showed smaller size and good differentiation, ER+/PR- patients had the oldest age at diagnosis, and ER-/PR+ was associated with the youngest age at onset and grade III tumor. Single hormone receptor-positive subgroups demonstrated worse disease-related outcomes than the ER+/PR+ subgroup. These associations were confirmed by the KBCS dataset. This trend was also demonstrated in the subpopulation of 1,944 patients with Ki-67 < 14 %. Inferior survival of single receptor-positive tumors was more definite among node-positive patients even when receiving both chemo-endocrine therapies., Conclusions: Current results suggest that the luminal A subtype is also heterogeneous and each subgroup has unique clinicopathologic characteristics. Lack of either ER or PR expression is associated with worse survival, especially among node-positive luminal A subtype.

This paper presents a circulating tumor cell (CTC) microseparator for isolation of CTCs from human peripheral blood using immunomagnetic nanobeads with bound antiepithelial cell adhesive molecule (EpCAM) antibodies that specifically bind to epithelial cancer cells. The isolation is performed through lateral magnetophoresis, which is induced by high-gradient magnetic separation technology, involving a ferromagnetic wire array inlaid in the bottom substrate of a microchannel. Experimental results showed that the CTC microseparator isolates about 90% of spiked CTCs in human peripheral blood at a flow rate of up to 5 mL/h and purifies to approximately 97%. The overall isolation procedure was completed within 15 min for 200 μL of peripheral blood. CTCs from peripheral blood of patients with breast and lung cancers were isolated with the CTC microseparator, and the results were compared with those of healthy donors. Using a fluorescence-based viability assay, the viability of CTCs isolated from peripheral blood of patients with cancer was observed. In addition, the usefulness of the CTC microseparator for subsequent genetic assay was confirmed by reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) amplification of cancer-specific genes using CTCs isolated from patients with cancer.

Sodium laurylsulfate (SLS), an anionic surfactant, was used for tailoring calcite via a solution route. SLS was dissolved in calcium and carbonate source solutions at various concentrations and critical micelle concentrations (CMCs). The crystallized particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), laser-scattering particle size measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis was carried out to measure sulfur profiles on the surface of the particles. SLS tended to produce small calcite particles in the carbonate source solution, whereas this effect was not obvious in the calcium source solution. It is believed that the electrostatic repulsion force in the carbonate source solution contributes to the different particle refining effects of SLS seen in the two solutions., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. The complex crossed structures with a polymorph of calcite, termed a chalky layer, which make up much of the shell of an oyster, are composed of flames and leaflets. Two layers, folia and the chalky layer in the giant Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) were examined using SEM (scanning electron microscope), micro-area-XRD (X-ray diffraction) and FT-IR (Fourier transform infrared spectrometer) to determine their morphologies and component characteristics. The chalky layer was also tested using microindentation to assess its mechanical properties, and a microcrack was generated to study the fracture mechanism of the chalky layer. From an analysis of the secondary protein structure, it was shown that the ordered structures of the two layers, α-helix and β-structure, are similar but that the unordered structures are different. Moreover, the foliated rods at the interface of the chalky layer play a key role in the crystal growth of the chalky layers. Comparing the morphology and the preferred orientation of foliated laths, the advantages of the relatively high density and low hardness of the chalky layer have interesting implications regarding the development of sophisticated complex composites., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A simple and selective method to determine norfloxacin using an optical flow-through sensor has been developed. The present sensor was prepared by packing anionic ion exchange resin in a glass tube, followed by introducing KMnO(4) solution to the glass tube for immobilization on resin. The optical sensor is based on the emission intensity from the Tb(III) solution sensitized by norfloxacin. The excitation of norfloxacin occurred by the chemiluminescence from the reaction of KMnO(4) and Na(2)SO(4) solutions. The effects of pH, concentration of Tb(III) ion, KMnO(4) and Na(2)SO(4) solutions and flow rate of the norfloxacin solution on the chemiluminescence intensity were studied to find the optimum experimental conditions. The emission intensity increased linearly with increasing norfloxacin concentration from 1.0 x 10(-3) to 1.0 x 10(-8) M and the detection limit (3sigma) was 8.7 x 10(-9). The applicability of the present method was demonstrated by determination of norfloxacin in various pharmaceutical preparations and serum sample.

A 39-year old man was admitted to our hospital with a chest stab wound. The stab wound was approximately 3 cm long by 4 cm deep and located in the subxiphoid process area. Neither the pleura nor pericardium were involved. However, pneumopericardium was detected by posteroanterior chest x-ray and computed axial tomography. The patient was treated by conservative therapy, and the pneumopericardium spontaneously disappeared after 5 days. The patient was discharged on hospital day 7.

Background: Patients with pectus carinatum complain of cosmetic problems because they stand out in spite of wearing clothes. Surgical treatment of pectus carinatum is resection of the deformed cartilage but a wide operative scar, postoperative pain and complications related with the operation can occur. Therefore we have performed compressive brace therapy as a non-operative treatment of pectus carinatum, and observed the effects and the efficiency of this treatment., Materials and Methods: From January 2001 to December 2007, 119 patients with pectus carinatum were treated with a compressive brace that they wore for 24h each day. Their degree of satisfaction was measured after 6 months wearing. This was evaluated with a score of 1-4. A score of 1 was assigned when the status was worse, 2 when it was same, 3 when partially improved, and 4 when a remarkable improvement was observed. Satisfaction was assessed subjectively by a parent if the patient was a child, and patients older than middle school age assessed the score themselves., Results: The mean overall satisfaction score was 3.95+/-0.4. Recurrence of pectus carinatum after removal of the compressive brace occurred in 6 (5.0%) of the total 119 patients. Four of these six patients stopped wearing the compressive brace against our advice. These six patients were re-corrected by re-wearing the compressive brace within 3 months after they originally removed it. Complications were discomfort at initial wearing of the brace, which occurred in all patients, skin rash due to compression for 84 patients (70.6%) and skin discoloration due to excessive compression for 18 patients (15.1%). The skin rash and discoloration disappeared within a few months after removal of the brace., Conclusion: This study demonstrated that non-surgical treatment using a compressive brace in patients with pectus carinatum was effective, especially in children and teenagers. Non-surgical treatment using a compressive brace in patients with pectus carinatum would be helpful for those who dislike surgery because of their fear about general anesthesia and operative complications. But, long-term follow-up is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of this compressive brace and the recurrence of the condition after its removal.

A flow injection chemiluminescence (CL) determination of aspartic acid is described. In this work, it was observed that aspartic acid could enhance the chemiluminescence (CL) emission of Ru(bipy)3(2+)-Ce(IV) system and this enhancement effect was dependent on the concentration of aspartic acid, based on which, CL system was established for the determination of aspartic acid. Under the optimum experimental conditions, the linear range and detection limit are 2 x 10(-7)-1.3 x 10(-5) M and 1.5 x 10-(8) M, respectively. The R.S.D. is 1.75%. (n = 10). The proposed method has been applied to detect the content of aspartic acid in tea leaves with satisfactory results. The possible mechanism of the CL reaction was discussed.

A sensitive, rapid, and specific assay has been developed for the simultaneous determination of acetylsalicylic acid and caffeine in commercial tablets based on their natural fluorescence. The mixture of these drugs was resolved by first derivative synchronous fluorimetric technique using two scans. At Deltalambda=106 nm, using first derivative synchronous scanning, only acetylsalicylic acid yields a detectable signal at 316 nm (peak to zero method) which is unaffected by caffeine. At Deltalambda=30 nm, the signal of caffeine at 288 nm (peak to zero method) is not affected by acetylsalicylic acid. The range of application is between 0.021 and 41.62 microg ml(-1) (correlation coefficient, R=0.9995) for acetylsalicylic acid and between 0.4486 and 44.86 microg ml(-1) (correlation coefficient, R=0.99786) for caffeine. The recovery range of 98.40-102% for acetylsalicylic acid and 90-100.5% for caffeine from their synthetic mixture was reported. Overall recovery of both compounds about 97-99% for acetylsalicylic acid and 97-98% for caffeine was obtained from real sample analysis. The detection limits are 0.0013 microg ml(-1) and 0.0306 microg ml(-1) for acetylsalicylic acid and caffeine, respectively. The relative standard deviation (n=10) for 20 microg ml(-1) of acetylsalicylic acid is 2.75% and for 2.2 microg ml(-1)of caffeine is 1.7%.

Internal jugular phlebectasia (IJP) is a fusiform dilatation of the internal jugular vein (IJV), usually presented as a neck mass in children. Accurate diagnosis from carefully directed history, physical examination, and radiological study could result in lifesaving therapy. We performed our study to suggest possible clinical diagnostic criteria for IJP in Korean children. We reviewed three cases of IJP (patients group) and compared the diameter of the internal jugular phlebectasias with diameters of IJVs in ten normal children (control group) using ultrasonography (USG). There were no significant differences in the range of diameters in the resting state between the two groups. The diameters on the right side, compared with those on the left side, showed no statistical significance (p > 0.05). The range of expanding diameter and average expanding ratios (resting state to Valsalva maneuver x 100%) showed a statistical difference between the two groups (p < 0.05).
