1. Pitfalls in the spectral measurements of polarization-altering metasurfaces

Abstract

The optical characterization of metasurfaces and nanostructures that alter the polarization of light is tricky and can lead to unphysical results, such as reflectance beyond unity. We track the origin of such pitfalls to the response of some typical optical components used in a commercial microscope or a custom-made setup. In particular, the beam splitter and some mirrors have different responses for both polarizations and can produce wrong results. A simple procedure is described to correct these erroneous results, based on the optical characterization of the different components in the optical setup. With this procedure, the experimental results match the numerical simulations perfectly. The methodology described here is simple and will enable the accurate spectral measurements of nanostructures and metasurfaces that alter the polarization of the incoming light. Abstract

We look beyond the standard time-average approach and investigate optical forces in the time domain. The formalism is developed for both the Abraham and Minkowski momenta, which appear to converge in the time domain. We unveil an extremely rich - and by far unexplored - physics associated with the dynamics of the optical forces, which can even attain negative values over short time intervals or produce low frequency dynamics that can excite mechanical oscillations in macroscopic objects under polychromatic illumination. The magnitude of this beating force is tightly linked to the average one. Implications of this work for transient optomechanics are discussed. Abstract

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $\mu$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This repository contains python scripts used to create visualizations for the paper "Multipolar origin of shape birefringence inmetasurfaces", submitted to Optics Express. The output of this script is an interactive html file and/or static image in png format. You can select your preference by commenting out save_in_2D/3D function at the end of the script. Abstract

We present the development of neutron-tagging techniques in Super-Kamiokande IV using a neural network analysis. The detection efficiency of neutron capture on hydrogen is estimated to be 26%, with a mis-tag rate of 0.016 per neutrino event. The uncertainty of the tagging efficiency is estimated to be 9.0%. Measurement of the tagging efficiency with data from an Americium-Beryllium calibration agrees with this value within 10%. The tagging procedure was performed on 3,244.4 days of SK-IV atmospheric neutrino data, identifying 18,091 neutrons in 26,473 neutrino events. Abstract

Plasmonic effects including near-field coupling, light scattering, guided mode through surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), Förster resonant energy transfer (FRET), and thermoplasmonics are extensively used for harnessing inexhaustible solar energy for photovoltaics and photocatalysis. Recently, plasmonic hot carrier-driven photocatalysis has received additional attention thanks to its specific selectivity in the catalytic conversion of gas molecules and organic compounds, resulting from the direct injection of hot carriers into the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the adsorbate molecule. The excellent light trapping property and high efficiency of hot charge-carrier generation through electromagnetic surface plasmon decay have been identified as the dominant mechanisms that promote energy-intensive chemical reactions at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. However, understanding the electromagnetic effects of plasmonics and distinguishing them from chemical effects in photocatalysis is challenging. While there exist several reviews underlining the experimental observations of plasmonic effects, this critical review addresses the physical origin of the various plasmon-related phenomena and how they can promote photocatalysis. The conditions under which each plasmonic effect dominates and how to distinguish one from another is also discussed, together with the analysis of the photoconversion efficiency. Finally, future research directions are proposed with the aim to accelerate progress in this field at the interface between chemistry and physics.

Abstract

Nanofabrication is key to many technological advances, especially the challenge of merging nanophotonics with electronics. Here, we investigate the fabrication process of plasmonic interdigitated gold electrodes having a very high aspect ratio (i.e. long and thin geometries) and a large surface area. Stringent stability issues that arise when these structures are fabricated using inorganic adhesion layers, such as titanium or chromium, on silica substrates are highlighted. We ascribe these problems to thermodynamical non-equilibrium states of freshly deposited gold and, in particular, discuss the role of surface energy in determining the structural properties of high aspect ratio gold nanostructures. We then show that the use of organic silane self-assembled monolayers improves the long term stability of these structures and, finally, characterize the fabricated electrodes. This technology can unleash the potential of hybrid optoelectronic circuits where current and light are manipulated with the same component.

Abstract

Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- in ep collisions at HERA has been measured with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre of mass energies in the range 115 < W < 280 GeV and photon virtuality Q**2 < 4 GeV**2. The cross section sigma(ep --> D*X) integrated over the kinematic region pt(D*) > 3 GeV and -1.5 < eta(D*) < 1.0 is (10.6+-1.7(stat.)+1.6(syst.)-1.3(syst.)) nb. Differential cross sections as functions of pt(D*), eta(D*) and W are given. The data are compared with two next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions. For a calculation using a massive charm scheme the predicted cross sections are smaller than the measured ones. A recent calculation using a massless charm scheme is in agreement with the data., 18 pages including 4 figures

Abstract

The gluon momentum density xg ( x , Q 2 ) of the proton was extracted at Q 2 = 20 GeV 2 for small values of x between 4 × 10 −4 and 10 −2 from the scaling violations of the proton structure function F 2 measured recently by ZEUS in deep inelastic neutral current ep scattering at HERA. The extraction was performed in two ways. Firstly, using a global NLO fit to the ZEUS data on F 2 at low x constrained by measurementsfrom NMC at larger x ; and secondly using published approximate methods for the solution of the GLAP QCD evolution equations. Consistent results are obtained. A substantial increase of the gluon density is found at small x in comparison with the NMC result obtained at larger values of x .

Abstract

For the first time, differential inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering using the anti-k(T) and SIScone algorithms. The measurements were made for boson virtualities Q(2) > 125 GeV2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82 pb(-1) and the jets were identified in the Breit frame. The performance and suitability of the jet algorithms for their use in hadron-like reactions were investigated by comparing the measurements to those performed with the k(T) algorithm. Next-to-leading-order QCD calculations give a good description of the measurements. Measurements of the ratios of cross sections using different jet algorithms are also presented; the measured ratios are well described by calculations including up to O(alpha(3)(s)) terms. Values of alpha(s)(M-z) were extracted from the data; the results are compatible with and have similar precision to the value extracted from the kT analysis. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Deep inelastic scattering and its diffractive component, ep {yields} e{prime} {gamma}* p {yields} e{prime} XN, have been studied at HERA with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 52.4 pb{sup -1}. The M{sub X} method has been used to extract the diffractive contribution. A wide range in the center-of-mass energy W(37-245 GeV), photon virtuality Q{sup 2} (20-450 GeV{sup 2}) and mass M{sub X} (0.28-35 GeV) is covered. The diffractive cross section for 2 < M{sub X} < 15 GeV rises strongly with W, the rise becoming steeper as Q{sup 2} increases. The data are also presented in terms of the diffractive structure function, F{sub 2}{sup D(3)}, of the proton. For fixed Q{sup 2} and fixed M{sub X}, xpF{sub 2}{sup D(3)} shows a strong rise as xP {yields} 0, where xp is the fraction of the proton momentum carried by the pomeron. For Bjorken-x < 1 x 10{sup -3}, xpF{sub 2}{sup D(3)} shows positive logQ{sup 2} scaling violations, while for X {ge} 5 x 10{sup -3} negative scaling violations are observed. The diffractive structure function is compatible with being leading twist. The data show that Regge factorization is broken.

Abstract

The production of D-*+/-: (2010) mesons in e(+/-) p scattering in the range of exchanged photon virtuality 0.05 D-0 pi(+) with D-0 -> K-pi(+) and corresponding antiparticle decay were used to identify D* mesons and the ZEUS beampipe calorimeter was used to identify the scattered electron. Differential D* cross sections as functions of Q(2), inelasticity, y, transverse momentum of the D* meson, p(T)(D*), and pseudorapidity of the D* meson, eta(D*), have been measured in the kinematic region 0.02 < y < 0.85, 1.5 < p(T)(D*) < 9.0 GeV and \eta(D*)\< 1.5. The measured differential cross sections are in agreement with two different NLO QCD calculations. Abstract

A resonance search has been made in the K0s p and K0s pbar invariant-mass spectrum measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 121 pb-1. The search was performed in the central rapidity region of inclusive deep inelastic scattering at an ep centre-of-mass energy of 300-318 GeV for exchanged photon virtuality, Q2, above 1 GeV2. Recent results from fixed-target experiments give evidence for a narrow baryon resonance decaying to K+ n and K0s p, interpreted as a pentaquark. The results presented here support the existence of such state, with a mass of 1521.5+/-1.5(stat.)^{+2.8}_{-1.7}(syst.) MeV and a Gaussian width consistent with the experimental resolution of 2 MeV. The signal is visible at high Q2 and, for Q2>20 GeV2, contains 221+/-48 events. The probability of a similar signal anywhere in the range 1500-1560 MeV arising from fluctuations of the background is below 6x10^{-5}., 4 eps figures, 15 pages, 1 table, accepted by Physics Letters B

Abstract

Resumen: Objetivo: Determinar los factores de riesgo que influyen en la mortalidad intrahospitalaria y/o el incremento de la estancia hospitalaria en pacientes mayores de 65 años con fractura del fémur proximal. Material y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo de pacientes de edad superior a 65 años intervenidos por fractura de cadera entre enero de 2015 y diciembre de 2017. Se estudian comorbilidades médicas, psicológicas, funcionales y analíticas presentes al ingreso, así como tratamiento, complicaciones y seguimiento analítico durante el ingreso y estado funcional y residencia al alta para un total de 54 variables. Se realiza un análisis bivariante mediante un punto de corte o endpoint compuesto entre mortalidad intrahospitalaria y el incremento de más de 10 días de estancia hospitalaria. Resultados: Fueron incluidos 360 pacientes con edad media de 84 años. El 75% eran mujeres y el 53,5% sufrió una fractura pertrocantérea. La media de comorbilidades por paciente fue 2,7 (0-7) siendo las más frecuentes la hipertensión arterial, demencia y diabetes. La mortalidad intrahospitalaria fue del 3,6% (n = 13) y la estancia hospitalaria media fue de 8,4 días (1-35), estando el 16,4% por encima de los 10 días. La presencia de complicaciones médicas (p < 0,001), nivel de hemoglobina al ingreso (p < 0,001), hipertensión arterial (p = 0,012), obesidad (p = 0,018) y Parkinson (p = 0,034) se relacionaron con la aparición del punto de corte estudiado. Conclusión: La hipertensión arterial, obesidad, Parkinson, el nivel de hemoglobina al ingreso y aparición de complicaciones médicas son variables que aumentaron el riesgo de la mortalidad intrahospitalaria y/o una estancia hospitalaria por encima de los 10 días en pacientes mayores de 65 años con fractura proximal del fémur. Les brames d’acier au carbone (0,08-0,12 % C) sont particulierement sensibles a la formation des criques longitudinales de surface.Une reduction du taux de criques a pu etre obtenue sur les sites de Sollac Fos et Dunkerque, en particulier grâce a une optimisation des echanges thermiques a travers la lingotiere et des conditions de lubrification.Une instrumentation de la lingotiere a ete utilisee pour l’evaluation des differentes solutions proposees.

Abstract

Events with a large rapidity gap and total transverse energy greater than 5 GeV have been observed in quasi-real photoproduction at HERA with the ZEUS detector. The distribution of these events as a function of the $\gamma p$ centre of mass energy is consistent with diffractive scattering. For total transverse energies above 12 GeV, the hadronic final states show predominantly a two-jet structure with each jet having a transverse energy greater than 4 GeV. For the two-jet events, little energy flow is found outside the jets. Abstract

La maitrise du niveau est un parametre fondamental dans le controle du procede de coulee continue. Elle est conditionnee par bon nombre de facteurs : nuance d’acier coulee et hydrodynamique en repartiteur et en lingotiere, caracteristiques de la vanne (quenouille/busette) et performances de la regulation, et enfin variations du debit sortant. L’influence de ces dernieres, mal connue, a ete quantifiee et certains mecanismes ont ete precises en faisant appel a une demarche systematique d’experimentation, permettant de proposer des solutions pour maitriser l’extraction de la brame et la stabilite du niveau en lingotiere.

Abstract

Using the same digital photographs of pork chops varying systematically in fat cover, colour, marbling and drip, 12,590 consumers from 23 countries each selected their preferred chop. Preferences differed considerably between individuals, between groups and between countries when comparing equivalent subsets of consumers taken from each country. Most choices were based on two appearance characteristics. Overall, both dark and light red pork were preferred equally and often with low fat cover. Preference for the light red pork was frequently chosen in association with no drip. Low fat cover was preferred by the majority of consumers, particularly in Poland, Finland and Mexico. Strong characteristic pork preferences were given by consumers in Ireland (the majority preferring light red, lean, no marbling and no drip), Australia (light red, lean, no marbling), Korea (marbled), Taiwan (dark red and lean) and Poland (lean). Effective marketing of pork should respond to the differing consumer preferences.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to discuss a nonlinear, comprehensive cardiovascular model for the development and evaluation of closed loop therapy. This model includes the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic effects of three cardiovascular agents. As an example, this paper will focus on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics effects of sodium nitroprusside on mean arterial pressure as a function of arterial resistance and venous tone. Furthermore, this pharmacological model of sodium nitroprusside will be verified with experimental data presented in the literature.

Abstract

A supervisory adaptive closed-loop sodium nitroprusside controller has been designed for the control of arterial pressure during cardiac surgery. Thii controller consists of a pole-placement and proportional-plus-integral (PP&Pl) feedback regulator, multiplemodel adaption (MMA) awl a supervisor. The PP&PI was designed to meet specific step response characteristics. The MMA was chosen to ensure rapid and stable adaption to changes in key patient parameters. The supervisor was designed to ensure safety and efficacy of control during disturbances which are common during cardiac surgery. This paper presents the performance of this controller during cardiic surgery.

Abstract

A search for events containing isolated tau leptons and large missing transverse momentum, not originating from the tau decay, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at the electron-proton collider HERA, using 130 pb^-1 of integrated luminosity. A search was made for isolated tracks coming from hadronic tau decays. Observables based on the internal jet structure were exploited to discriminate between tau decays and quark- or gluon-induced jets. Three tau candidates were found, while 0.40 +0.12 -0.13 were expected from Standard Model processes, such as charged current deep inelastic scattering and single W-boson production. To search for heavy-particle decays, a more restrictive selection was applied to isolate tau leptons produced together with a hadronic final state with high transverse momentum. Abstract

A Webcam-based vision system for performing image processing in real time in a restricted environment is presented. A color based image segmentation algorithm is the fundamental part of the system. Algorithm efficiency was very important due to hardware limitations. This led to a simple and cost-effective vision system that is able to detect and identify several mobile robots through successive frames. The main achievements of the presented system can be described as robust object detection under relative constant illumination and sufficient refresh rate at image processing to evaluate position and direction of movement of target objects with a rough idea of speed.

Abstract

The azimuthal distribution of jets produced in the Breit frame in high-Q**2 deep inelastic e+p scattering has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.6 pb-1. Abstract

Three-jet production in the reaction ep --> eXp has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 42.74 pb^-1. The data were measured in the kinematic region 5 < Q^2 < 100 GeV^2, 200 < W < 250 GeV and 23 < M_X < 40 GeV. The diffractive signal was selected by requiring a large rapidity gap in the outgoing proton direction. Jets were reconstructed in the centre-of-mass system of X using the exclusive k_T-algorithm. A sample of three-jet events in diffraction has been identified. Differential cross sections were measured as a function of the jet pseudorapidity and jet transverse momentum with respect to the virtual photon-Pomeron axis. The jets going in the Pomeron direction are broader than those going in the virtual-photon direction. This is consistent with models predicting that gluons are predominantly produced in the Pomeron direction and quarks in the virtual-photon direction., 14 pages, 5 figures and 7 tables. Abstract

The first measurement of inclusive Ds+- photoproduction at HERA has been performed with the ZEUS detector for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies 130 < W < 280 GeV. The measured cross section for 3 < pt(Ds) < 12 GeV and |eta(Ds)|< 1.5 is sigma(ep -> Ds X) = 3.79 +- 0.59 (stat.) +0.26-0.46 (syst.) +- 0.94 (br.) nb, where the last error arises from the uncertainty in the Ds decay branching ratio. The measurements are compared with inclusive D*+- photoproduction cross sections in the same kinematic region and with QCD calculations. The Ds cross sections lie above a fixed-order next-to-leading order calculation and agree better with a tree-level O(alpha,alpha_s^3) calculation that was tuned to describe the ZEUS D* cross sections. The ratio of Ds+- to D*+- cross sections is 0.41 +- 0.07 (stat.) +0.03-0.05 (syst.) +- 0.10 (br.). From this ratio, the strangeness-suppression factor in charm photoproduction, within the LUND string fragmentation model, has been calculated to be gamma_s = 0.27 +- 0.05 +- 0.07 (br.). Abstract

Despite many theories, the initiating circumstances for the development of atherosclerosis remain obscure. The development of animal models of atherosclerosis was based upon the different theories of the origins of atherosclerosis which suggested that it originates at the intimal surface of the vessel. A more recent model of atherosclerosis involves perivascular manipulation of the vessel by positioning of a hollow silastic collar around the artery. In this model, several of the features seen in early human atherosclerosis are generated within a period of 7 days. It is hypothesized that arterial wall hypoxia following occlusion of the vasa vasorum may be the initial lesion of atherosclerosis, and hence that in some cases atherosclerosis is a disease of the outer layers of the arterial wall.

Abstract

Developing a clinically useful closed-loop drug delivery system can be extremely time consuming and costly. One approach to reducing the time and cost associated with developing closed-loop systems is to reduce the number of animal experiments and perform an extensive set of simulation studies. Through simulations, a closed-loop controller's performance can be evaluated over a complete spectrum of the patient population, including boundary conditions. Simulation studies are repeatable, offering significant advantages in comparing modifications in control algorithms. Finally, simulation studies can be performed in a fraction of the time required for animal studies, at a fraction of the cost. We have developed a simulator, that included a nonlinear pulsatile-flow cardiovascular model, a physiological regulatory mechanism, and the pharmacology of four frequently titrated cardiovascular drugs. This simulator has already been used in the design and evaluation of two closed-loop algorithms-a self-tuning regulator (STR) and a multiple model adaptive controller (MMAC)-for blood pressure control during and after cardiac surgery.

Abstract

The production of $\phi$ mesons in the reaction $e^{+}p \rightarrow e^{+} \phi p$ ($\phi \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$) at a median $Q^{2}$ of $10^{-4} \ \rm{GeV^2}$ has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA. The differential $\phi$ photoproduction cross section $d\sigma/dt$ has an exponential shape and has been determined in the kinematic range $0.1, Comment: 23 pages, including 6 post script figures

Abstract

This paper reports the cross section measurements for the process ep $\rightarrow$ e~\jpsi~p for $Q^2 < 4$ GeV$^2$ at $\sqrt s = 296$ GeV, based on an integrated luminosity of about 0.5~pb$^{-1}$, using the ZEUS detector. The \jpsi~was detected in its $\rm e^{+}e^{-}$ and $\rm \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decay modes. The photoproduction cross section was measured to be $52^{ \ +7}_{-12}\pm 10$~nb at an average $\gamma$p centre of mass energy of 67 GeV and $71^{+13}_{-20}\pm 12$~nb at 114 GeV. The significant rise of the cross section compared to lower energy measurements is not in agreement with VDM models, but can be described by QCD inspired models if a rise in the gluon momentum density at low $x$ in the proton is assumed., Comment: 21 pages, latex, 4 figures appended as uuencoded file

Abstract

Strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) is a small perennial tree that grows spontaneously in the Mediterranean basin, Ireland, and Portugal. In this work, strawberry tree clones were established in vitro from epicormic shoots obtained from a young tree, an adult tree, and from a seedling. They were propagated by axillary shoot buds proliferation on solid and in liquid media, and also in a modified De Fossard medium with 9 µM benzylaminopurine. The organogenesis from calli obtained from apical leaves of the in vitro grown shoots from the three genotypes was carried out in the same basal liquid medium supplemented with 9 µM thidiazuron. Micropropagation through organogenesis in liquid medium proved to be more efficient than the other tested methods (considering the number of shoots produced), but the shoots were showing hyperhydricity. Shoots were sucessufully rooted on medium with indole-3-butyric acid and acclimatized ex vitro with rates higher than 90 %. Six month-old plants from the most proliferative genotype (AU1) and propagated in vitro by different methods were submitted to drought stress (no watering for 10 d) and several morphological and physiological parameters were evaluated and compared to a control group (watered to 70 % field capacity). No significant differences were found in plant biomass, root length, and plant height, however, slight differences were observed in water potential, net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 concentration, and stomatal conductance between the plantlets propagated on solid or liquid medium. In general, the responses to drought stress imposed were was similar in plants micropropagated by different propagation methods.
