Zusammenfassung An 12 milchernahrten Mastkalbern im Gewichtsabschnitt 72–160 kg wurde die renale Phosphatausscheidung uber 9 Wochen verfolgt. Obwohl die P-Aufnahme uber das Futter mit durchschnittlich 138 mg/kg KG und Tag wahrend des Versuchszeitraumes relativ konstant blieb, erhohte sich die renale P-Ausscheidung von 28 mg P in der 1. Versuchswoche auf 57 mg/kg KG und Tag in der 6. Versuchswoche. Zu Versuchsbeginn wurden 22% und in der 8. Versuchswoche 42% des oral aufgenommenen Phosphats uber den Harn ausgeschieden. Die Niere stellt damit offensichtlich das Hauptausscheidungsorgan fur Phosphat bei Mastkalbern dar, wahrend bei Wiederkauern der Phosphatausscheidung im Harn keine quantitative Bedeutung zukommt. Renal excretion of phosphate Renal phosphate excretion was studied over a period of 9 weeks in 12 milk-fed calves weighing 70–160 kg. Although P uptake remained relatively constant at an average of 138 mg./kg. and per day during the experimental period, renal P excretion rose from 28 mg. P in the first week to 57 mg./kg. and day in the 6th week. At the start of the experiment 22% and in the 8th week 42% of the oral uptake of P in the food was excreted in the urine. Aunque la ingestion de P, con un promedio de 138 mg./kg. peso y dia permanecia relativamente constante durante el espacio de tiempo que duro el ensayo, aumento la excrecion de P de 28 mg. P en la semana 1° de ensayo a 57 mg./kg. peso y dia en la semana 6° de ensayo. Al comenzar la prueba, se elimino con la orina el 22% y en la semana 8° del ensayo el 42% del fosfato ingerido por via oral. Con esto, al parecer, el rinon es el organo principal de eliminacion de fosfato en los terneros, mientras que a los rumiantes no les atane la eliminacion de fosfato por la orina ninguna importancia cuantitativa.

Im zweiten Lebensmonat steigt die P-Konzentration im Speichel ausschlieslich milchaustauschernahrter Kalber an, ohne aber im Alter von 6 Monaten wiederkauertypische Werte vollig erreicht zu haben. Die Umstellung von Milchaustauschfutter auf Heu-Kraftfutterrationen bewirkt innerhalb von 2—4 Wochen einen Anstieg der P-Werte im Speichel auf Wiederkauerniveau. During the 2nd month of age, the P-concentration in the saliva of milk replacer-fed calves increases but without reaching by 6 months of age the typical ruminants level. Durante el mes segundo de vida aumenta la concentracion de P en la saliva de los terneros alimentados exclusivamente con reemplazadores de la leche, pero sin llegar a alcanzar a la edad de 6 meses los valores tipicos de rumiantes. El cambio de pienso reemplazador de leche a raciones de forrajes concentrados ocasiona en el plazo de 2—4 semanas un ascenso en los valores de P en la saliva a nivel de los animales rumiantes.

Zusammenfassung Uber zwei Versuchsreihen mit Netzkafighaltung und -futterung an Forellensetzlingen in Sus- bzw. Ostseekustenwasser wird berichtet. Der Einflus folgender Faktoren in Alleinfutterrezepturen auf Gewichtszunahme und Futterverwertung der Forelle wurde gepruft: 1. Proteinkonzentration (32 bis 49 %), 2. Austausch tierischer (Fischmehl) gegen pflanzliche Eiweistrager (Methionin- und Lysin-erganztes Sojaschrot), 3. partielle Energiebedarfsdeckung durch native bzw. walzengetrocknete, also hitze-aufgeschlossene Quellstarke (aus Mais), 4. der summarische Effekt einer Vollvitaminierung. Die tagliche Futterzuteilung mit 2 % des KGW erfolgte restriktiv. Der Versuch I/70 muste nach 123 Futterungstagen wegen Fremdwassereinbruchs abgebrochen werden. Fur Versuch II/71 liegen Ergebnisse nach 76 Futterungstagen vor. Walzengetrocknete Quellstarke wird im Vergleich zum nativen Starkekorn energetisch gunstig verwertet. Der teilweise Ersatz tierischer Proteine durch pflanzliche Eiweistrager bei ausreichender Aminosaurensupplementierung und hinreichendem Angebot verfugbarcr Kohlenhydrate erscheint moglich. Weitere Untersuchungen bezuglich des Eiweisaustausches sind jedoch erforderlich. Die derzeitigen futtermittelrechtlichen Normen zur Herstellung von Forellenmischfutter (Rohprotein mindestens 35 % und mindestens 35 % tierische Eiweisfuttermittel in der Ration) sind moglicherweise qualitativ zu niedrig angesetzt. Fur Forellenmischfutter in der Teichwirtschaft sollte ein Rohpretein-gehalt von 40 %, vornehmlich resultierend aus hochwertigen Fischmehlen, vorlaufig nicht unterschritten werden. In die Restrezeptur konnen aufgeschlossen Starketrager (Quellstarke) vermehrt Eingang finden.

Zusammenfassung In einer Ringuntersuchung, an der insgesamt 11 Institute der Bundesrepublik Deutschland teilnahmen, wurde an definiertem Tiermaterial die Brauchbarkeit des Allgemeinen Hemmstofftestes (Bac. subtilis BGA) uberpruft. Auf Grund der Ergebnisse, die mit identischen Probensatzen an 40 Rindern, 102 Mastkalbern und 60 Schweinen erhalten wurden, mus dem Testverfahren eine (noch) unbefriedigende Reproduzierbarkeit zugesprochen werden.

Zusammenfassung Opaque-2-Mais (HL) wurde mit normalem Hybridmais (NL) des gleichen Anbau-gebietes verglichen, der allerdings einen uberdurchschnittlich hohen Lysingehalt auf-wies. Der HL-Mais enthielt 4,7% Lysin und 1,2% Tryptophan im Protein, der NL-Mais 3,3% Lysin und 0,8% Tryptophan. Der HL-Mais hatte einen hoheren Protein-, Asche- und Phosphorgehalt und ent-hielt auserordentlich wenig Carotin und Xantophyll. Im ubrigen bestanden nur geringe Unterschiede in der Zusammensetzung. In Rattenversuchen wurden mit HL-Mais wesentlich hohere Gewichtszunahmen und PER-Werte erhalten. Die Differenz zum NL-Mais konnte ausgeglichen werden. wenn diesem die entspredienden Lysin- und Tryptophanmengen zugesetzt wurden. HL-Mais lies sich durch Lysinerganzung noch verbessern. Tryptophan erbradite keine weitere Verbesserung, wenn es dem lysinerganzten HL-Mais zugelegt wurde. Der Proteinwert von methioninerganztem Kasein wurde von HL-Mais nicht erreicht. Bei Wachtelkuken war HL-Mais dem NL-Mais stets deutlich uberlegen. Diese Differenz nahm mit steigender Proteinkonzentration ab. Lysinerganzung von NL-Mais verbesserte dessen Proteinqualitat fur Wachtelkuken. Zusatzliche Gaben von Tryptophan oder Tryptophan, Arginin und Glycin waren ohne Wirkung. Die Qualitat des HL-Maises wurde erreicht, wenn zusatzlich noch das weite Leucin/Isoleucinverhaltnis durch Isoleucinzugabe korrigiert wurde. Methionin-zulagen erbrachten in keinem Falle Wachstumsverbesserungen. Bei Wachtelhennen, die Rationen mit 8 bzw. 12% Protein erhielten, fiel die Lege-leistung weniger stark ab, wenn HL-Mais an Stelle von NL-Mais verwendet wurde.

Zusammenfassung In zwei Versuchen an 1260 Mastkuken mit praxisnahen Rationen und in drei weiteren Futterungsexperimenten an 2868 Broilern mit halbsynthetischen Rationstypen wurden die Alkanhefen Lavera und Toprina im Austausch gegen Fischmehl- und/oder Sojaprotein eingesetzt. Bei Einhaltung einer Schwefelaminosaurenkonzentration von 3,6 bis 3,8 % vom Rohprotein konnten 38 % des Rationsproteins (ca. 15% der Futtermischung) wirkungsgleich durch Eiweis der Alkanhefen ersetzt werden (Versuch II). 20 % Hefe im Futter (54 % des Rationsproteins) erzeugten dagegen deutliche Leistungsdepressionen (Versuch I). Wurde Hefe (methionin- und argininerganzt) als alleinige Proteinquelle verwendet, musten im Vergleich zu Fischmehl- bzw. Sojakontrollgruppen in alien gepruften Konzentrationen (20, 30 und 40 % der Ration) erhebliche Wachstumsdepressionen und eine signifikante Erhohung der Mortalitat in Kauf genommen werden. Dieser negative Effekt war mit steigenden Hefekonzentrationen in der Ration starker ausge-pragt. Der Leistungsunterschied zu den Soja- bzw. Fischmehlgruppen konnte durch Vitamin-E-Zusatz (75 ppm) und/oder Selenerganzung (0,3 ppm) zur Basalration (25 ppm Vitamin E) zwar verringert, jedoch nicht ausgeglichen werden.

Zusammenfassung In zwei Versuchen an insgesamt 4126 Mastkuken wurde der Einflus von 1% Octaferm in der Basalration auf Wachstum und Futterverwertung gepruft. Octaferm ist die Handelsbezeichnung fur ein standardisiertes UGF-Konzentrat aus verschiedenen Fermentationsruckstanden der Garungsindustrie. Als Basalrationen wurden Mischungen mit entweder rein pflanzlichen Proteinen oder mit Fischmehlanteilen von 5% verwendet, die ohne bzw. mit dem Zusatz eines Futterungsantibiotikums (Zinkbacitracin, Oxytetracyclin) angeboten wurden. Versuchsserie I wurde uber vier Wochen durchgefuhrt, Versuch II wurde nach 50 Tagen beendet. Im Mittel von 4126 Kuken wurde das 4-Wochen-Gewicht der Kontrollgruppen mit 653 g durch den Octafermzusatz um 4% erhoht. Damit ging eine Einsparung von 50 g Futter/kg Zunahme einher, was einer um 3% verbesserten Futterverwertung entspricht. Zusammenfassung In einem Futterungsversuch an 270 Laufern wurde die nutritive Wirkung von 20 ppm Carbadox im DLG-Schweinemastfutter I (Grundstandardverfahren, max. 30 mg Carbadox/Tier und Tag) im Vergleich zu einer Kontroll- und einer 20-ppm-CTC-Gruppe gepruft. Die drei Versuchsrationen wurden an Schweine verfuttert, die Ferkelaufzuchtfutter sowohl ohne wie auch mit Zusatz einer wachstumsfordernden Substanz erhalten hatten. Der Versuch dauerte 122 Tage, das mittlere Alter der Tiere bei Versuchsbeginn betrug 94 Tage. The plant pathogenic bacterium Pseudomonas syringae uses a type III secretion system to inject virulence proteins directly into the cytoplasm of its hosts. The P. syringae type III secretion apparatus is encoded, in part, by the HrpZ operon, which carries the hrpA gene encoding the pilin subunit of the pilus, various components of the structural apparatus, and the HrpZ harpin protein that is believed to produce pores in the host cell membrane. The pilus of the type III system comes into direct contact with the host cell and is, therefore, a likely target of the host's pathogen surveillance systems. We sequenced and analyzed 22 HrpZ operons from P. syringae strains spanning the diversity of the species. Selection analyses, including K(a)/K(s) tests and Tajima's D, revealed strong diversifying selection acting on the hrpA gene. This form of selection enables pathogens to maintain genetic diversity within their populations and is often driven by selection imposed by host defense systems. The HrpZ operon also revealed a single significant recombination event that dramatically changed the evolutionary relationships among P. syringae strains from 2 quite distinct phylogroups. This recombination event appears to have introduced genetic diversity into a clade of strains that may now be undergoing positive selection. The identification of diversifying selection acting on the Hrp pilus across the whole population sample and positive selection within one P. syringae lineage supports a trench warfare coevolutionary model between P. syringae and its plant hosts.

Methionine is an essential amino acid in all animal species. Supplementation of appropriate amounts of methionine and analogues to meet requirements is safe for the target species. The use of methionine-based additives will not result in an increased content in tissues and products. Residues present in animal tissues and products resulting from the extremely small quantities of free styrene and 2-vinylpyridine found in DL-methionine copolymer (DL-Met-cop) are very unlikely to raise concerns about consumer safety. None of the products are considered to present a significant inhalation risk. DL-Methionine (DL-Met), DL-Met-cop and DL-methionine protected with ethylcellulose (DL-Met-ec) are non-irritant to skin and eyes, and the lack of sensitisation potential demonstrated for DL-Met is considered relevant to DL-Met-cop and DL-Met-ec. DL-Methionine sodium salt (DL-Met-Na) is considered to be corrosive to skin and eyes. The hydroxy analogue of methionine (HMTBa) is an irritant to the skin and corrosive to the eyes. The calcium salt of HMTBa, HMTBa-Ca, is irritant to the eyes. The absence of dermal sensitation potential demonstrated for HMTBa is considered relevant for HMTBa-Ca. The isopropyl ester of HMTBa, HMTB-i, is non-irritant to skin/eyes, and is not a dermal sensitiser. The use of these products as feed additives does not represent a risk to the environment. DL-Met, DL-Met-Na, HMTBa and HMTBa-Ca are effective dietary sources of methionine for protein synthesis in monogastric animals (including fish). The hydroxy analogues show a somewhat lower bioefficacy than the DL-methionine forms. They can all be used in ruminants, particularly when protected against ruminal degradation by specific formulations. DL-Met-cop, HMTB-i and DL-Met-ec escape ruminal degradation to a certain extent, the remainder being available for gastrointestinal absorption. The FEEDAP Panel does not support the use of the additives under application in water for drinking because of concerns about target animal safety and the maintenance of optimum performance

Urea supplementation to feed for ruminants provides non-protein nitrogen for microbial protein synthesis in the rumen and thus in part replaces other dietary protein sources. Urea supplementation of feed for ruminants at doses up to 1 % of complete feed DM (corresponding to 0.3 g/kg bw/day) is considered safe when given to animals with a well adapted ruminal microbiota and fed diets rich in easily digestible carbohydrates. Based on the metabolic fate of urea in ruminants, the use of urea in ruminant nutrition does not raise any concern for consumers’ safety. Urea is considered to be non irritant to skin and eyes and its topical use suggests that it is not a dermal sensitiser. The risk of exposure by inhalation would be low. The substitution of protein by urea in well balanced feed for ruminants would not result in an increased environmental nitrogen load. Urea is an effective source of non-protein nitrogen substituting for dietary protein in ruminants.

Investigations with 15N'‐labelled urea were carried out to find out the influence of the amount of fibre on the reflux of 15N’ into the caecum to take part in the caecal metabolism. Two pelleted diets, containing 9.7% (group 1 with 23% oat hulls) and 2.2% (Group 2 without oat hulls) crude fibre, with urea with 60 atom% 15N‐excess (15N) used as marker were given to three White New Zealand rabbits each group. Group 1 and 2 consumed 109 and 72 g fresh matter per rabbit and day, respectively. Daily 15N'‐intake per rabbit was 307 mg in group 1 and 279 mg in group 2. Most of 15N’ was eliminated directly via the urine. The daily faecal excretion in group 1 and 2 was 5.3 and 2.3 mg 15N’, respectively. Only about 20 to 30% of 15N’ and volatile fatty acids in the caecum and higher amounts of 15N’ in muscles were found. The animals of this group consumed nearly the total amount of faeces by caecotrophy. Therefore 24 g of group 2 was still satisfying compared to 33 g live weight gain/rabbit and day of group 1. Literature data are analysed regarding losses of body substances occurring during a period of food deprivation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Nitrogen (protein) and energy losses show a distinct dependence on fish mass (FM [g]) and water temperature (T [°C]). Several regression models for this relationship were compared with best testing estimates as follows: Nitrogen loss [mg N 2 fish−1 2 d−1] = 0.0658 e(1.037) 2 FM0.739 (n= 49, 9–20°C, 5–400g fish mass, P < 0.001, B = 0.826) Nitrogen-corrected energy loss [J 2 fish−1 2 d−1] = 22.09 e(1.034) 2 FM0.833 (n= 63, 9–25°C, 8–400 g fish mass, P < 0.001, B = 0.887). For nitrogen loss as well as for nitrogen-corrected energy loss, the metabolic rate shows a progressive increase with rising water temperature. The temperature coefficient increases in magnitude as temperature increases. The introduction of a general common exponent (0.8 instead of 0.739 for nitrogen loss and 0.833 for energy loss) for fish mass decreases the precision of the estimate. The equations could serve as a base for estimating net protein and net energy maintenance requirements of rainbow trout. Possible limitations, caused by uncertainities in estimating the elevated metabolic rate by food intake and ingestion, are discussed.

In der Schweinemast werden dem Futter Kupfermengen zugesetzt, die den Bedarf der Tiere weit ubersteigen. Dadurch verbessern sich einerseits die Gewichtszunahmen, andererseits wird jedoch, wie wir in fruheren Arbeiten zeigen konnten, in den Nieren, Lebern und im Muskel vermehrt das Schwermetall Cadmium retiniert. In einem Futterungsversuch mit weiblichen und mannlichen kastrierten Ferkeln wurde versucht, diese kupferinduzierte Cadmiumerhohung (bei 175 mg Cu pro kg Futter) durch Zulage von Zink bzw. Vitamin C zu kompensieren. Wahrend eine Zinkzulage von 100 bzw. 200 mg Zink pro kg Futter die Cadmiumbelastung von Niere und Leber nicht verringern konnte, reduzierte der Zusatz von 1 000 mg Vitamin C die erhohten Cadmiumgehalte der Organe wieder auf Werte, wie sie bei niedrigem Kupferzusatz (35 mg Cu pro kg Futter) erhalten werden. Dieser positive Effekt von Vitamin C tritt aber nicht nur dann auf, wenn durch hohe Kupfergaben die Cadmiumretention angehoben wurde. Auch bei den Schweinen, die lediglich 35 mg Kupfer in der Diat erhielten, reduziert Vitamin C den Cadmiumgehalt in den Organen signifikant um 35 bis 40 %. Vitamin C liefert damit in jedem Fall einen Beitrag zur Qualitatsverbesserung von Nahrungsmitteln tierischen Ursprungs.

SUMMARY We describe the use of degenerate primers to amplify the core hrp/hrc region of P. syringae pv. phaseolicola NPS3121. 18 826 bp were amplified using long-range PCR, digested and shotgun sequenced. Sequence analysis finds a hypervariable region between the hrpU and hrpC operons, and indications of positive selection on the hrpE locus. The primers were also shown to work on four other, widely divergent P. syringae strains. These primers should be of great utility for the characterization of hrp/hrc clusters from any P. syringae strain.

In einem biologischen Testverfahren an Cumatetralyl sensibilisierten Kuken konnte in 3 Versuchen anhand des Parameters Thromboplastinzeit mit homologer Thrombokinase gezeigt werden, da\ Menadioldiacetat und Menadioldibutyrat Vitamin-K-wirksam sind. Die biologische Wirksamkeit von Menadion aus diesen Menadiolestern betrug ca. 70 % der Menadionaktivitat aus gecoatetem Menadionbisulfit (Dohyfral®). Im Gegensatz zu 2 ungeschutzten MSB-Praparationen, welche bei Warmebelastung ca. 60 % ihrer ursprunglichen Wirkung verloren, waren die Menadiolester temperaturstabil.

In a nutritional tolerance study 36 young dogs were fed over 52 weeks high or low purine diets at an average paired feeding intake of 0.6 and 80 mg purine-N/MJ per day. The high purine diet resulted in a significant decrease of growth rate by -23% (Beagles) and -38% (Dalmatians) and of feed efficiency (-29 and -42%). The fasting levels of allantoin, uric acid and uracil in blood plasma were significantly increased. During the experiment a metabolic adaptation to the high purine diet decreased the plasma concentrations of uric acid, uracil and in part of allantoin. The high purine diet effected a significant increase of Km (2.5-fold) and of Vmax (1.6-fold) of uric transport through the erythrocyte membrane. The results documented disadvantageous effects of high purine nutrition during juvenile development.

Zusammenfassung Die intestinale Absorption von Aminosauren und die Kinetik der L-Lysinabsorption wurde in vitro an insgesamt 240 zwei- bis dreijahrigen Regenbogenforellen (Salmo gairdneri Rieh.) untersucht. Mit der “everted-gut-sac”-Methode konnte im Mitteldarm ein aktiver Transport von 3H-markiertem Glycin, L-Leucin, L-Isoleucin, DL-Methionin und L-Lysin gegen einen Konzentrationsgradienten nachgewiesen werden. Bezogen auf gleiches Darmtrockengewicht war die Transportrate fur die neutralen Aminosauren DL-Methionin (6,04 μmol/g Darm-Trocken-Gewicht), L-Leucin (6,03 μmol/g DTG), Glycin (4,70 μmol/g DTG) und L-Isoleucin (2,77 μmol/g DTG) um ein Mehrfaches hoher als fur Lysin (1,00 μmol/g DTG). Im Rektum konnte dagegen lediglich fur L-Leucin ein geringer seroser Transfer (0,72 μmol/g DTG) gemessen werden. Kinetik und Topographie des L-Lysintransportes durch die Burstensaummembran (BSM) der Mucosazellen wurden mit dem von Scharrer (1978) beschriebenen in-vitro Transportmodell untersucht. Die intrazellulare L-Lysinaufnahme erfolgt durch einen saturablen, temperatursensitiven Transportprozes. Bei einer Inkubationstemperatur von 15°C konnte ebenso wie bei 25°C im Rektum eine signifikant hohere maximale Transportrate Vmax als im Mitteldarm festgestellt werden. Die Substrataffinitat des Carriersystems wie auch die Km waren dagegen in beiden untersuchten Darmabschnitten gleich; sie nahm mit steigender Temperatur zu und die Km ab. Die Hemmbarkeit der Lysinaufnahme durch Ouabain spricht dafur, das der L-Lysintransport durch die BSM ebenso wie bei Saugern durch einen transmembranalen Na+-Gradienten energetisiert wird. Die fehlende Wirkung von 2,4 DNP auf den Lysintransport im Mitteldarm last darauf schliesen, das im Gegensatz zu Saugern bei Forellen die fur den aktiven intestinalen Transport benotigte Energie auch aus anaeroben Stoffwechselvorgangen gewonnen werden kann.

First the history of the appointment for a full professorship is described in the various stages of development of the School of Veterinary Medicine Dresden. Then the significance of the habilitation degree introduced in 1903 is discussed in terms of the development of the School of Veterinary Medicine Dresden and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Leipzig, respectively. Commentary follows on the current discussion about the discontinuation of further development of the habilitation and possible alternatives to it, the Ph.D. and the assistant professorship.

Investigations with 15N'-labelled urea were carried out to find out the influence of the amount of fibre on the reflux of 15N' into the caecum to take part in the caecal metabolism. Two pelleted diets, containing 9.7% (group 1 with 23% oat hulls) and 2.2% (Group 2 without oat hulls) crude fibre, with urea with 60 atom% 15N-excess (15N) used as marker were given to three White New Zealand rabbits each group. Group 1 and 2 consumed 109 and 72 g fresh matter per rabbit and day, respectively. Daily 15N'-intake per rabbit was 307 mg in group 1 and 279 mg in group 2. Most of 15N' was eliminated directly via the urine. The daily faecal excretion in group 1 and 2 was 5.3 and 2.3 mg 15N', respectively. Only about 20 to 30% of 15N' and volatile fatty acids in the caecum and higher amounts of 15N' in muscles were found. The animals of this group consumed nearly the total amount of faeces by caecotrophy. Therefore 24 g of group 2 was still satisfying compared to 33 g live weight gain/rabbit and day of group 1. It is concluded that the animals of group 2 could compensate the low fibre level within a period of about 20 days by a more efficient utilization, the consumption of crude protein and starch being 18 and 12% lower than in group 1, respectively. Feed intake and health status were not evidently affected. The results are in contradiction to the common knowledge.

In commercial pig fattening, copper is added to the feed in amounts that greatly exceed the requirements of the animals. On the one hand, this improves weight gain, but on the other, as we were able to recently prove, the retention of the heavy metal cadmium rises in the kidney, in the liver and in muscle. In a feeding experiment with female and male castrated piglets, we tried to counter the copper-induced rise in cadmium (175 mg Cu/kg feed) by adding zinc or vitamin C to the diet. While addition of 100 or 200 mg zinc per kg of diet had no influence, the addition of 1000 mg vitamin C reduced the elevated cadmium values in the kidneys and livers to values only determined with a low copper supplementation of 35 mg copper per kg of feed. This positive vitamin C effect not only occurs in cases of high copper supplementation (175 mg Cu/kg feed); when the pigs were given only 35 mg copper per kg of feed, vitamin C also reduced the cadmium content in the organs by 35 to 40%. This indicates that vitamin C improves the quality of food gained from animals for human consumption in both conditions.

During a 6-wk feeding trial, effects of low dietary deoxynivalenol (DON; 0, 0.1, 1 and 10 ppm) on food consumption and weight gain were investigated in male mice. Food intake was similar in all four dietary groups. Weight gain in the group receiving 10 ppm DON was significantly (P less than 0.01) reduced. At the end of the feeding period, test animals were sacrificed and absorption of water, D-glucose, L-leucine, L-tryptophan, 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid and iron was measured in isolated perfused jejunal segments in vitro. No effects were observed on absorption of water, leucine, tryptophan and iron. However, at a dietary DON concentration of 10 ppm, a slightly but significantly (P less than 0.05) reduced transfer of glucose was measured. Furthermore, transfer as well as tissue accumulation of 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid in the jejunal segment were both significantly decreased up to 50%. Heavy metal and trace element content was determined in liver, kidney and small intestine. Manganese and molybdenum content in liver tissue was reduced with a DON concentration of 10 ppm in the diet. The findings indicate that subchronic ingestion of DON, in concentrations occurring in contaminated food and feed, results in an impairment of intestinal transfer and uptake of nutrients such as glucose and 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid.

A bioassay of vitamin K is described, based on the prothrombin clotting time of 3-week-old, vitamin-K-depleted, and cumatetralyl-sensitized male broiler chicks, using a homologous thrombokinase preparation. With this test it could be shown that the diacetate and dibutyrate esters of menadiol are vitamin-K-active. The bioactivity of menadione from these menadiolesters amounted to about 70% of the standard menadione from a coated menadione sodium bisulfite (Dohyfral). Menadiol seems to be temperature-resistant under such conditions, whereby two uncoated MSB preparations lost about 60% of their activity.

Two feeding experiments with a total number of 3 914 rainbow-trout fingerlings (mean body weight: 63 and 72 g) reared in net cages were designed to test whether and to what extent supplements of gelatinized starch and of fat to isonitrogenous diets influence growth and feed efficiency. It could be demonstrated that the gelatinized corn starch obviously can be well utilized by the fish. Corn starch added to the diet increased growth. Fat concentrations up to a level of 13.8% of the rations were well tolerated and utilized. Growth and feeding efficiency were distinctly improved in comparison to control groups receiving 6.5% crude fat. The two groups having shown the best performance were fed with a mixture of 70% fish meal, 21% heat treated wheat, 7% soy beam or redfish (Sebastes sp.) oil and 2% vitamin premix. After 123 days a gain of 271 g could be achieved at a conversion ratio of 0.93 g feed/g weight gain.
