International audience; The role of short chain branches (SCBs) (C4H9) on the melt and crystalline properties of monodisperse polyethylene systems (C400H802) is investigated, using molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained united-monomer model that represents a chemical monomer as one particle. A method is introduced, whereby SCBs are grown out of the linear backbone to minimize computational expense. Here, this concept is proven by introducing differing numbers (Nb = 0, 1, 2, 4, 10, and 20) of regularly spaced SCBs along the chain backbones and studying their influence on the melt and crystalline properties. By growing SCBs into the melt phase, it is demonstrated that they marginally perturb the original topology, justifying a relatively short equilibration time after growth. Upon crystallization, however, each system’s behavior differs considerably. Cooling and heating cycles are performed to study crystallization and melting at progressively slower rates. The crystalline morphology is observed to depend strongly on both cooling rate and number of branches along the linear backbone. In particular, the lamella thickness decreases systematically with both faster cooling and increasing SCB content. At the highest branch content, of one per 20 backbone carbons (Nb = 20), crystallization is almost entirely suppressed, whereas a small number of branches allows control over the average lamellar thickness. This observation, combined with a prudent method for equilibrating systems with SCBs, opens up opportunities to study more complex chain architectures and mimic industrial polyethylene morphologies.

We present results from isothermal and temperature-sweep creep experiments adapted to filaments which were derived from spin coated and subsequently crumpled thin polystyrene films. Due to the existence of residual stresses induced by preparation, the filaments showed significant shrinkage which we followed as a function of time at various temperatures. In addition, the influence of preparation conditions and subsequent annealing of supported thin polymer films on shrinkage and relaxation behavior was investigated. The temporal evolution of shrinkage revealed a sequence of relaxation regimes. We explored the temperature dependence of this relaxation and compared our observations with published results on drawn melt-spun fibers. This comparison revealed intriguing similarities between both systems prepared along different pathways. For instance, the magnitudes of shrinkage of melt-spun fibers and of filaments from crumpled spin coated polymer films are similar. Thus, our results suggest the existence of generic mechanisms of “forgetting”, i.e., how non-equilibrated polymers lose their memory of past processing events. Graphical abstract

International audience; Equilibrium and dynamical properties of a two-dimensional polydisperse colloidal model system are characterized by means of molecular dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. We employed several methods to prepare quasi-equilibrated systems: in particular, by slow cooling and tempering with MD (method SC-MD), and by tempering with MC dynamics involving swaps of particle diameters (methods Sw-MD, Sw-MC). It is revealed that the Sw-methods are much more efficient for equilibration below the glass transition temperature Tg leading to denser and more rigid systems which show much slower self-diffusion and shear-stress relaxation than their counterparts prepared with the SC-MD method. The shear-stress relaxation modulus G(t) is obtained based on the classical stress-fluctuation relation. We demonstrate that the α-relaxation time τα obtained using a time-temperature superposition of G(t) shows a super-Arrhenius behavior with the VFT temperature T0 well below Tg. We also derive novel rigorous fluctuation relations providing isothermic and adiabatic compression relaxation moduli in the whole time range (including the short-time inertial regime) based on correlation data for thermostatted systems. It is also shown that: (i) the assumption of Gaussian statistics for stress fluctuations leads to accurate predictions of the variances of the fluctuation moduli for both shear (μF) and compression (ηF) at T ≳ Tg. (ii) The long-time (quasi-static) isothermic and adiabatic moduli increase on cooling faster than the affine compression modulus ηA, and this leads to a monotonic temperature dependence of ηF which is qualitatively different from μF(T) showing a maximum near Tg..

We investigate the standard deviation $\delta v(\tsamp)$ of the variance $v[\xbf]$ of time series $\xbf$ measured over a finite sampling time $\tsamp$ focusing on non-ergodic systems where independent "configurations" $c$ get trapped in meta-basins of a generalized phase space. It is thus relevant in which order averages over the configurations $c$ and over time series $k$ of a configuration $c$ are performed. Three variances of $v[\xbf_{ck}]$ must be distinguished: the total variance $\dvtot = \dvint + \dvext$ and its contributions $\dvint$, the typical internal variance within the meta-basins, and $\dvext$, characterizing the dispersion between the different basins. We discuss simplifications for physical systems where the stochastic variable $x(t)$ is due to a density field averaged over a large system volume $V$. The relations are illustrated for the shear-stress fluctuations in quenched elastic networks and low-temperature glasses formed by polydisperse particles and free-standing polymer films. The binary Voronoi mixture is a fluid model whose interactions are local and many-body. Here we perform molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations of an equimolar mixture that is weakly polydisperse and additive. For the first time we study the structural relaxation of this mixture in the supercooled-liquid regime. From the simulations we determine the time- and temperature-dependent scattering functions for a large range of wave vectors, as well as the mean-square displacements of both particle species. We perform a detailed analysis of the dynamics by comparing the MD results with the first-principles-based idealized mode-coupling theory (MCT). To this end, we employ two approaches: fits to the asymptotic predictions of the theory, and fit-parameter-free binary MCT calculations based on static-structure-factor input from the simulations. We find that many-body interactions of the Voronoi mixture do not lead to strong qualitative differences relative to similar analyses carried out for simple liquids with pair-wise interactions. For instance, the fits give an exponent parameter $\lambda \approx 0.746$ comparable to typical values found for simple liquids, the wavevector dependence of the Kohlrausch relaxation time is in good agreement with literature results for polydisperse hard spheres, and the MCT calculations based on static input overestimate the critical temperature, albeit only by a factor of about 1.2. This overestimation appears to be weak relative to other well-studied supercooled-liquid models such as the binary Kob--Andersen Lennard-Jones mixture. Overall, the agreement between MCT and simulation suggests that it is possible to predict several microscopic dynamic properties with qualitative, and in some cases near-quantitative, accuracy based solely on static two-point structural correlations, even though the system itself is inherently governed by many-body interactions., Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure

Extending recent work on stress fluctuations in complex fluids and amorphous solids we describe in general terms the ensemble average $v(\Delta t)$ and the standard deviation $\delta v(\Delta t)$ of the variance $v[\mathbf{x}]$ of time series $\mathbf{x}$ of a stochastic process $x(t)$ measured over a finite sampling time $\Delta t$. Assuming a stationary, Gaussian and ergodic process, $\delta v$ is given by a functional $\delta v_G[h]$ of the autocorrelation function $h(t)$. $\delta v(\Delta t)$ is shown to become large and similar to $v(\Delta t)$ if $\Delta t$ corresponds to a fast relaxation process. Albeit $\delta v = \delta v_G[h]$ does not hold in general for non-ergodic systems, the deviations for common systems with many microstates are merely finite-size corrections. International audience; It is well-known that time-dependent correlation functions related to temperature and energy can crucially depend on the thermostatting mechanism used in computer simulations of molecular systems. We argue, however, that linear response functions must be considered as universal properties of physical systems. This implies that the classical fluctuation equation for the transient heat capacity, cv(t), is not applicable to the thermostatted molecular dynamics (apart from long enough times). To improve on this point, we derive a number of exact general expressions for the frequency-dependent heat capacity in terms of energy correlation functions, valid for the Nosé–Hoover and some other thermostats. We also establish a general relation between auto- and cross correlation functions of energy and temperature. Recommendations on how to use these relations to maximize the numerical precision are provided. It is demonstrated that our approach allows us to obtain cv(t) for a supercooled liquid system with high precision and over many decades in time reflecting all pertinent relaxation processes.ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

We study a two-dimensional glass-forming system of slightly polydisperse (LJ) particles using molecular dynamics simulations and demonstrate that in the liquid regime (well above the vitrification temperature) this model shows a number of features typical of the glass transition: (i) the relation between compressibility and structure factor $S(q)$ is strongly violated; (ii) the dynamical structure factor $S(q,t)$ at low $q$ shows a two-step relaxation; (iii) the time-dependent heat capacity ${c}_{v}(t)$ shows a long-time power-law tail. We show that these phenomena can be rationalized with the idea of composition fluctuations and provide a quantitative theory for the effects (i) and (ii). It implies that such effects must be inherent in all polydisperse colloidal models, including binary LJ mixtures.

Spin coating yields thin films of non-equilibrated polymers, with severe consequences, observable by the naked eye, in creep experiments on molten filamentlike samples derived from these films. While filaments from annealed films showed the expected monotonic elongation, filaments made from as-cast films initially showed the opposite behavior: They contracted and thereby lifted loads up to a thousand times the weight of the filament over a distance of almost up to $40%$ its initial length. We discuss the molecular origin of such large macroscopic manifestations of deviations from equilibrium in terms of reduced conformational entropy.

Static and dynamical properties of a model glass-forming oligomer liquid are analyzed using molecular dynamics simulations. The temperature and system size effects are assessed for the affine shear modulus μA, the quasistatic shear modulus μsf (obtained using the stress-fluctuation relation), and the shear relaxation modulus G(t). It is found that while both μA and μsf are nearly independent of the system size, their variances show significant system size dependence, in particular, below the glass transition temperature Tg. It is also shown that the standard deviation of the shear modulus, δμsf(T), exhibits a pronounced peak at T ≈ Tg whose position is nearly independent of the system volume V. Moreover, the whole function δμsf(T) is nearly the same for different system sizes above the glass transition. We propose a theory which quantitatively predicts δμsf(T) at T ≳ Tg and explains both its independence of V and its peak near Tg. It is also established that below Tg the variance of the affine modulus follows the standard power law, δμA2∝1/V, while δμsf shows anomalously a slow decrease with V as δμsf2∝1/Vα with α < 1. Conditions of rapid processing often drive polymers to adopt nonequilibrium molecular conformations, which, in turn, can give rise to structural, dynamical, and mechanical properties that are significantly different from those in thermodynamic equilibrium. However, despite the possibility to control the desired nonequilibrium properties of polymers, a rigorous microscopic understanding of the processing-property relations is currently lacking. In an attempt to stimulate progress along this topical direction, we focus here on three prototypical and apparently different cases: spin-coated polymer films, rapidly drawn polymer fibers, and sheared polymer melts. Inspired by the presence of common observations in the chosen cases, we search for order parameters as, for example, topological correlations and heterogeneities, which may allow characterizing the processing-induced behavior of polymers. We highlight that such approaches, necessitating concerted efforts from theory, simulations, and experiments, can provide a profound understanding leading to predictable and tunable properties of polymers., SCOPUS: re.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Understanding the consequences of the noncrossing constraint is one of the remaining challenges in the physics of walks and polymers. To address this problem, we performed molecular simulations for the separation of only two initially connected, overlapping polymer chains with interactions tuned such that they are nearly random walks. The separation time for a configuration strongly correlates with the number of monomer contacts between both chains. We obtain a broad distribution of separation times with a slowly decaying tail. Knots only play a role for those configurations that contribute to the tail of the distribution. In contrast, when starting from the same initial configuration but allowing for chain crossings, separation is qualitatively faster and the time distribution narrow. The simulation results are rationalized by analytical theory. A theory of contacts based on polymer fractality and criticality is presented, along with the expected effects of knots.

International audience; A simple and rigorous approach to obtain stress correlations in viscoelastic liquids (including supercooled liquid and equilibrium amorphous systems) is proposed. The long-range dynamical correlations of local shear stress are calculated and analyzed in 2-dimensional space. It is established how the long-range character of the stress correlations gradually emerges as the relevant dynamical correlation length l grows in time. The correlation range l is defined by momentum propagation due to acoustic waves and vorticity diffusion which are the basic mechanisms for transmission of shear stress perturbations. We obtain the general expression defining the time- and distance-dependent stress correlation tensor in terms of material functions (generalized relaxation moduli). The effect of liquid compressibility is quantitatively analyzed; it is shown to be important at large distances and/or short times. The revealed long-range stress correlation effect is shown to be dynamical in nature and unconnected with static structural correlations in liquids (correlation length ξs). Our approach is based on the assumption that ξs is small enough as reflected in weak wave-number dependencies of the generalized relaxation moduli. We provide a simple physical picture connecting the elucidated long-range fluctuation effect with anisotropic correlations of the (transient) inherent stress field, and discuss its implications.

From equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a bead-spring model for short-chain glass-forming polymer melts we calculate several quantities characterizing the single-monomer dynamics near the (extrapolated) critical temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of mode-coupling theory: the mean-square displacement g0(t), the non-Gaussian parameter $ \alpha_{2}(t)$ and the self-part of the van Hove function $ G_{\rm s}(r,t)$ which measures the distribution of monomer displacements r in time t. We also determine these quantities from a continuous-time random walk (CTRW) approach. The CTRW is defined in terms of various probability distributions which we know from previous analysis. Utilizing these distributions the CTRW can be solved numerically and compared to the MD data with no adjustable parameter. The MD results reveal the heterogeneous and non-Gaussian single-particle dynamics of the supercooled melt near $ T_{\rm c}$ . In the time window of the early $\alpha$ relaxation $ \alpha_{2}(t)$ is large and $ G_{\rm s}(r,t)$ is broad, reflecting the coexistence of monomer displacements that are much smaller (“slow particles”) and much larger (“fast particles”) than the average at time t, i.e. than $ r = g_{0}(t)^{1/2}$ . For large r the tail of $ G_{\rm s}(r,t)$ is compatible with an exponential decay, as found for many glassy systems. The CTRW can reproduce the spatiotemporal dependence of $ G_{\rm s}(r,t)$ at a qualitative to semiquantitative level. However, it is not quantitatively accurate in the studied temperature regime, although the agreement with the MD data improves upon cooling. In the early $\alpha$ regime we also analyze the MD results for $ G_{\rm s}(r,t)$ via the space-time factorization theorem predicted by ideal mode-coupling theory. While we find the factorization to be well satisfied for small r, both above and below $ T_{\rm c}$ , deviations occur for larger r comprising the tail of $ G_{\rm s}(r,t)$ . The CTRW analysis suggests that single-particle “hops” are a contributing factor for these deviations.

We introduce a new theoretical model of simple fluid, whose interactions, defined in terms of the Voronoi cells of the configurations, are local and many-body. The resulting system is studied both theoretically and numerically. We investigate by means of molecular dynamics simulation a coarse-grained polymer glass model focusing on (quasi-static and dynamical) shear-stress fluctuations as a function of temperature T and sampling time $\Delta t$. The linear response is characterized using (ensemble-averaged) expectation values of the contributions (time-averaged for each shear plane) to the stress-fluctuation relation $\mu_{sf}$ for the shear modulus and the shear-stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$. Using 100 independent configurations we pay attention to the respective standard deviations. While the ensemble-averaged modulus $\mu_{sf}(T)$ decreases continuously with increasing T for all $\Delta t$ sampled, its standard deviation $\delta \mu_{sf}(T)$ is non-monotonous with a striking peak at the glass transition. The question of whether the shear modulus is continuous or has a jump-singularity at the glass transition is thus ill-posed. Confirming the effective time-translational invariance of our systems, the $\Delta t$-dependence of $\mu_{sf}$ and related quantities can be understood using a weighted integral over $G(t)$. This implies that the shear viscosity $\eta(T)$ may be readily obtained from the $1/\Delta t$-decay of $\mu_{sf}$ above the glass transition., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures, submitted to PRE

Glass formation and glassy behavior remain as the important areas of investigation in soft matter physics with many aspects which are still not completely understood, especially at the nanometer size-scale. In the present work, we show an extension of the "nanobubble inflation" method developed by O'Connell and McKenna [Rev. Sci. Instrum. 78, 013901 (2007)] which uses an interferometric method to measure the topography of a large array of 5 μm sized nanometer thick films subjected to constant inflation pressures during which the bubbles grow or creep with time. The interferometric method offers the possibility of making measurements on multiple bubbles at once as well as having the advantage over the AFM methods of O'Connell and McKenna of being a true non-contact method. Here we demonstrate the method using ultra-thin films of both poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and polystyrene (PS) and discuss the capabilities of the method relative to the AFM method, its advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore we show that the results from experiments on PVAc are consistent with the prior work on PVAc, while high stress results with PS show signs of a new non-linear response regime that may be related to the plasticity of the ultra-thin film.

Copolymers are commonly used as interface modifiers that allow for the compatibilization of polymer components in a blend. For copolymers to function as a compatibilizer, they must diffuse through the matrix of the blend to the interface between the two blend components. The diffusivity of a copolymer in a blend matrix therefore becomes important in determining good candidates for use as compatibilizers. In this work, coarse-grained Monte Carlo simulations using the bond fluctuation model modified with an overlap penalty have been developed to study the diffusive behavior of PS/PMMA random copolymers in a PMMA homopolymer blend. The simulations vary the connectivity between different monomers, the thermodynamic interactions between the monomers which manifest within a chain, and between copolymer and homopolymer matrix and define the monomer friction coefficient of each component independently, allowing for the determination of the combined effect of these parameters on copolymer chain diffusion. The results of this work indicate that PS-r-PMMA copolymer diffusion is not linearly dependent on the copolymer composition on a logarithmic scale, but its diffusion is a balance of the kinetics governed by the dominant motion of the faster styrene monomers and thermodynamics, which are governed by the concentration of styrene monomer within a given monomer's local volume.

Surface tension-driven flow techniques have recently emerged as an efficient means of shedding light into the rheology of thin polymer films. Motivated by experimental and theoretical approaches in films bearing a varying surface topography, we present results on the capillary relaxation of a square pattern at the free surface of a viscoelastic polymer film, using molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained polymer model. Height profiles are monitored as a function of time after heating the system above its glass-transition temperature and their time dependence is fitted to the theory of capillary leveling. Results show that the viscosity is not constant, but time dependent. In addition to providing a complementary insight about the local inner mechanisms, our simulations of the capillary-leveling process therefore probe the viscoelasticity of the polymer and not only its viscosity, in contrast to previous experimental approaches.

The density crossover scaling of thermodynamic and conformational properties of solutions and melts of self-avoiding and highly flexible polymer chains without chain intersections confined to strictly two dimensions (d = 2) is investigated by means of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations of a standard coarse grained bead-spring model. We focus on properties related to the contact exponent set by the intrachain subchain size distribution. With R ∼ N ν being the size of chains of length N and ρ the monomer density, the interaction energy e int between monomers from different chains and the corresponding number n int of interchain contacts per monomer are found to scale as with ν = 3/4 and θ2 = 19/12 for dilute solutions and ν = 1/d and θ2 = 3/4 for N≫ g(ρ) ≈ 1/ρ2. Irrespective of ρ, long chains thus become compact packings of blobs of contour length with d p = d − θ2 = 5/4 being the fractal line dimension. Due to the generalized Porod scattering of the compact chains, the Kratky representation of the intramolecular form factor F(q) reveals a non-monotonous behavior approaching with increasing chain length and density a power-law slope $F(q)q^d /\rho \approx 1/(qR)^{\theta _2 } $ in the intermediate regime of the wavevector q. The specific intermolecular contact probability is argued to imply an enhanced compatibility for polymer blends confined to ultrathin films. We comment briefly on finite persistence length effects.

We give an extended review of recent numerical and analytical studies on semiflexible chains near surfaces undertaken at Institut Charles Sadron (sometimes in collaboration) with a focus on static properties. The statistical physics of thin confined layers, strict two-dimensional (2D) layers and adsorption layers (both at equilibrium with the dilute bath and from irreversible chemisorption) are discussed for the well-known worm-like-chain (WLC) model. There is mounting evidence that biofilaments (except stable d-DNA) are not fully described by the WLC model. A number of augmented models, like the (super) helical WLC model, the polymorphic model of microtubules (MT) and a model with (strongly) nonlinear flexural elasticity are presented, and some aspects of their surface behavior are analyzed. In many cases, we use approaches different from those in our previous work, give additional results and try to adopt a more general point of view with the hope to shed some light on this complex field.

Focusing on isotropic elastic networks we propose a novel simple-average expression $G(t) = \mu_A - h(t)$ for the computational determination of the shear-stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$ of a classical elastic solid or fluid and its equilibrium modulus $\G_{eq} = \lim_{t \to \infty} G(t)$. Here, $\mu_A = G(0)$ characterizes the shear transformation of the system at $t=0$ and $h(t)$ the (rescaled) mean-square displacement of the instantaneous shear stress $\hat{\tau}(t)$ as a function of time $t$. While investigating sampling time effects we also discuss the related expressions in terms of shear-stress autocorrelation functions. Using molecular dynamics simulation of a standard bead-spring model we investigate the density crossover scaling of strictly two-dimensional self-avoiding polymer chains focusing on properties related to the contact exponent set by the intrachain subchain size distribution. Irrespective of the density sufficiently long chains are found to consist of compact packings of blobs of fractal perimeter dimension dp = 5/4.

This work presents a mechanical analysis of tangential contact using molecular dynamics simulations. Scratch tests with a conical tip on amorphous polymer surfaces were simulated at various temperatures, scratching velocities, roughnesses of the tip and with various interactions between the tip and the monomers. The local friction coefficient for the different contact conditions (temperature, tip roughness and scratching velocity) was calculated by studying the apparent friction and the contact asymmetry. The results are in good agreement with experimental data from tests on classical polymer surfaces on a microscopic scale.

By means of molecular dynamics simulations and scaling theory we study the response of opposing polymer brushes to constant shear motion under good solvent conditions. Model systems that contain explicit solvent molecules (Lennard-Jones dimers) are compared to solvent-free systems while varying of the distance between the grafted layers and their molecular parameters, chain length and grafting density. Our study reveals a power-law dependence of macroscopic transport properties on the Weissenberg number, W, beyond linear response. For instance, we find that the kinetic friction constant scales as μ ∼ W0.57 for large values of W. The shear stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$ may be determined from the shear stress $\tau(t)$ after switching on a tiny step strain $\gamma$ or by inverse Fourier transformation of the storage modulus $G^{\prime}(\omega)$ or the loss modulus $G^{\prime\prime}(\omega)$ obtained in a standard oscillatory shear experiment at angular frequency $\omega$. It is widely assumed that $G(t)$ is equivalent in general to the equilibrium stress autocorrelation function $C(t) = \beta V \langle \delta \tau(t) \delta \tau(0)\rangle$ which may be readily computed in computer simulations ($\beta$ being the inverse temperature and $V$ the volume). Focusing on isotropic solids formed by permanent spring networks we show theoretically by means of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and computationally by molecular dynamics simulation that in general $G(t) = G_{eq} + C(t)$ for $t > 0$ with $G_{eq}$ being the static equilibrium shear modulus. A similar relation holds for $G^{\prime}(\omega)$. $G(t)$ and $C(t)$ must thus become different for a solid body and it is impossible to obtain $G_{eq}$ directly from $C(t)$., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures

Shear-strain and shear-stress correlations in isotropic elastic bodies are investigated both theoretically and numerically at either imposed mean shear-stress $\tau$ ($\lambda=0$) or shear-strain $\gamma$ ($\lambda=1$) and for more general values of a dimensionless parameter $\lambda$ characterizing the generalized Gaussian ensemble. It allows to tune the strain fluctuations $\mu_{\gamma\gamma} \equiv \beta V \la \delta \gamma^2 \ra = (1-\lambda)/G_{eq}$ with $\beta$ being the inverse temperature, $V$ the volume, $\gamma$ the instantaneous strain and $G_{eq}$ the equilibrium shear modulus. Focusing on spring networks in two dimensions we show, e.g., for the stress fluctuations $\mu_{\tau\tau} \equiv \beta V \la \delta\tau^2 \ra$ ($\tau$ being the instantaneous stress) that $\mu_{\tau\tau} = \mu_{A} - \lambda G_{eq}$ with $\mu_{A} = \mu_{\tau\tau}|_{\lambda=0}$ being the affine shear-elasticity. For the stress autocorrelation function $c_{\tau\tau}(t) \equiv \beta V \la \delta \tau(t) \delta \tau(0) \ra$ this result is then seen (assuming a sufficiently slow shear-stress barostat) to generalize to $c_{\tau\tau}(t) = G(t) - \lambda \Geq$ with $G(t)$ being the shear-stress relaxation modulus., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures

Conformational properties of regular dendrimers and more general hyperbranched polymer stars with Gaussian statistics for the spacer chains between branching points are revisited numerically. We investigate the scaling for asymptotically long chains especially for fractal dimensions $d_f = 3$ (marginally compact) and $d_f = 2.5$ (diffusion limited aggregation). Power-law stars obtained by imposing the number of additional arms per generation are compared to truly self-similar stars. We discuss effects of weak excluded volume interactions and sketch the regime where the Gaussian approximation should hold in dense solutions and melts for sufficiently large spacer chains., 13 pages, 14 figures

We revisit the relation between the shear stress relaxation modulus $G(t)$, computed at finite shear strain $0 < \gamma \ll 1$, and the shear stress autocorrelation functions $C(t)|_{\gamma}$ and $C(t)|_{\tau}$ computed, respectively, at imposed strain $\gamma$ and mean stress $\tau$. Focusing on permanent isotropic spring networks it is shown theoretically and computationally that in general $G(t) = C(t)|_{\tau} = C(t)|_{\gamma} + G_{eq}$ for $t > 0$ with $G_{eq}$ being the static equilibrium shear modulus. $G(t)$ and $C(t)|_{\gamma}$ thus must become different for solids and it is impossible to obtain $G_{eq}$ alone from $C(t)|_{\gamma}$ as often assumed. We comment briefly on self-assembled transient networks where $G_{eq}(f)$ must vanish for a finite scission-recombination frequency $f$. We argue that $G(t) = C(t)|_{\tau} = C(t)|_{\gamma}$ should reveal an intermediate plateau set by the shear modulus $G_{eq}(f=0)$ of the quenched network., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We present results of molecular dynamics simulations for free-standing and supported thin films of a nonentangled polymer melt using a coarse-grained (bead-spring) model. Our discussion is mainly concerned with the equilibrium properties of the films above the critical temperature (Tc) of mode-coupling theory, although we also determine the glass-transition temperature (Tg) by measurements of the film thickness h upon cooling. We explore the influence of confinement on the structure and dynamics of the polymer films. We find that the dynamics in the films is accelerated compared to the bulk, that this enhanced mobility originates from the surfaces, and that the effect is larger at the free than at the supported surface. Thus, the films have lower Tc values relative to the bulk. Tc depends on film thickness h; this dependence can be well parametrized by Tc(h) = T/(1 + h0/h), a function proposed by experiments on supported polystyrene films. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The behaviour of a flexible polymer chain in solvents of variable quality in dilute solution is discussed both in the bulk and in the presence of an adsorbing wall. Monte Carlo simulations of coarse-grained bead-spring models and of the bond fluctuation model are presented and interpreted in terms of phenomenological theories and scaling concepts. Particular attention is paid to the behaviour of the polymer chain when the temperature of the polymer solution gets lower than the Theta temperature. It is argued that the adsorption transition line at the Theta temperature splits into lines of wetting and drying transitions of polymer globules attached to the wall. In addition, it is shown that the coil-globule transition is followed by a second transition, which in the bond fluctuation model is a crystallization into a regular lattice structure. Performing a finite size scaling analysis on the two transitions it is shown that (for the chosen model) both transitions coincide in the thermodynamic limit, corresponding to a direct collapse of the random coil into the crystal without intermediate coil-globule transition. The implications of this result for the standard mean field or tricritical theory of the coil-globule transition based on a truncated virial expansion are discussed.

We survey results of computer simulations for the structure and dynamics of supercooled polymer melts and films. Our survey is mainly concerned with features of a coarse grained polymer model?a bead?spring model?in the temperature regime above the critical glass temperature Tc of the ideal mode-coupling theory (MCT). We divide our discussion into two parts: a part devoted to bulk properties and a part dealing with thin films. The discussion of the bulk properties focuses on two aspects: a comparison of the simulation results with MCT and an analysis of dynamic heterogeneities. We explain in detail how the analyses are performed and what results may be obtained, and we critically assess their strengths and weaknesses. In discussing the application of MCT we also present first results of a quantitative comparison which does not rely on fits, but exploits static input from the simulation to predict the relaxation dynamics. The second part of this review is devoted to extensions of the simulations from the bulk to thin films. We explore in detail the influence of the boundary condition, imposed by smooth or rough walls, on the structure and dynamics of the polymer melt. Geometric confinement is found to shift the glass transition temperature Tg (or Tc in our case) relative to the bulk. We compare our and other simulation results for the Tg shift with experimental data, briefly survey some theoretical ideas for explaining these shifts and discuss related simulation work on the glass transition of confined liquids. Finally, we also present some technical details of how to perform fits to MCT and give a brief introduction to another approach to the glass transition based on the potential energy landscape of a liquid.

We present a comparison between results, obtained from different simulation models, for the static properties of end-tethered polymer layers in good solvent. Our analysis includes data from two previous studies--the bond fluctuation model of Wittmer et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 101, 4379 (1994)] and the off-lattice bead-spring model of Grest and Murat [Macromolecules 26, 3108 (1993)]. Additionally, we explore the properties of a similar off-lattice model simulated close to the Theta temperature. We show that the data for the bond fluctuation and the Grest-Murat model can be analyzed in terms of scaling theory because chains are swollen inside the Pincus blob. In the vicinity of the Theta point the structure of the chains is essentially Gaussian in the Pincus blob. Therefore, the data for the second off-lattice model can be compared quantitatively to the self-consistent field theory. Different ways to determine the parameters of the self-consistent field theory are discussed.

We analyze dynamical heterogeneities in a simulated “bead-spring” model of a nonentangled, supercooled polymer melt. We explore the importance of chain connectivity on the spatially heterogeneous motion of the monomers. We find that when monomers move, they tend to follow each other in one-dimensional paths, forming strings as previously reported in atomic liquids and colloidal suspensions. The mean string length is largest at a time close to the peak time of the mean cluster size of mobile monomers. This maximum string length increases, roughly in an exponential fashion, on cooling toward the critical temperature TMCT of the mode-coupling theory, but generally remains small, although large strings involving ten or more monomers are observed. An important contribution to this replacement comes from directly bonded neighbors in the chain. However, mobility is not concentrated along the backbone of the chains. Thus, a relaxation mechanism in which neighboring mobile monomers along the chain move predominant...

The adsorption of long flexible chains from dilute solution is studied by Monte Carlo simulation of a coarse-grained bead-spring model, and the results are interpreted in terms of phenomenological theories, using both mean field approaches and scaling concepts. It is shown that the surface excess, i.e., the integral of the local density difference of the monomers close to the surface relative to the bulk changes its sign very close to the adsorption transition (that is a sharp transition in the limit where the chain length diverges to infinity) for long chains, and it can be described in terms of the standard scaling description that has previously been tested for polymers with one end anchored on the surface (“polymer mushrooms”). Attention is also paid to the question on how this description changes when the temperature T of the polymer solution approaches the theta temperature Θ. Since the theta point can also be considered as an end point of a line of critical points, where the polymer solution phase ...

This paper presents a topical overview of molecular-dynamics and Monte Carlo simulations for polymer systems close to solid interfaces. The simulations utilize simplified coarse-grained models: The polymers are represented by bead-spring chains, and the walls by a crystalline layer of Lennard-Jones particles or by a smooth impenetrable barrier. This approach has two advantages. First, it reduces the complexity of the simulation. Often, it is only then possible that the interesting length and time scales can be studied at all. Second, the approach concentrates on generic features that are believed to determine the physics of the problem under consideration. The results of the simulation can thus help to single out those features which should be incorporated in an analytical treatment. In this paper, we want to illustrate the versatility of these models by applying them to a broad spectrum of different problems. The situations considered range from the adsorption of a polymer from dilute solution onto a wall, over the importance of sub-monolayer monomeric or polymeric lubricants for kinetic friction, to the crystallization or glass transition of dense polymer films.

A bead-spring model of a polymer chain with one end attached to a wall is studied by Monte Carlo simulations for chain lengths 16 ≤ N ≤ 256. Two types of adsorption potentials, 9-3 and 10-4 Lennard-Jones (LJ) potentials, between the effective monomers and the wall are assumed. For both cases the adsorption transition where the chain changes its asymptotic statistical properties from a three-dimensional to a two-dimensional configuration is located using a scaling analysis. It is shown that the crossover exponent φ = 0.50 ± 0.02 is the same for both LJ potentials. This value is compatible with recent theoretical predictions and simulation results for lattice models with short-range wall potentials. The results of our study support the expectation that the exponents describing the adsorption transition are universal, i.e., they are not influenced by the precise form and the long-range character of the adsorption potentials used. The technical aspects of the simulations (which use configurational bias methods as well as histogram re-weighting) are also carefully discussed.

The influence of a film geometry on the glass transition is investigated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a (non-entangled) polymer melt. The confinement is realized by two identical potential barriers of the form U wall = z -9 , where z denotes the distance of a particle from the wall. Despite the geometric confinement, basic qualitative features of the system dynamics can be well described in the framework of the mode-coupling theory (MCT). Examples are the two-step relaxation of the incoherent intermediate scattering function, the time-temperature superposition property of the late time α-process and the space-time factorization of the scattering function on the intermediate time scale of the MCT β-process. A comparison of the dynamics in the film and in the bulk shows an acceleration of the relaxation processes due to the presence of the walls. This leads to a reduction of the critical temperature, T c , of MCT with decreasing film thickness. A comparison of the quantities like the static structure factor and the mean-square displacements for the bulk and for the film suggests that T - T c (D) is a relevant temperature scale for the dynamics at intermediate times. Furthermore, we also analyze the sharp rise of the relaxation times at low temperatures by the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) equation and thus estimate the VFT-temperature T 0 (D). We observe that, similar to T c (D), also T 0 (D) decreases for smaller D. As T 0 ≤ T g ≤ T c , these results suggest that also the glass transition temperature should decrease for stronger confinement.

A melt of nonentangled polymer chains confined between two smooth and purely repulsive walls is studied for various film thicknesses D and temperatures. The dynamics of the supercooled films is qualitatively identical to that of the bulk, but the walls lead to faster relaxation. To quantify this observation we analyze the data by the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of the glass transition. We find that the critical temperature of MCT, Tc(D), decreases with D and that T - Tc(D) is a relevant temperature scale. The static structure factor and dynamic correlation functions at intermediate times coincide with bulk behavior when compared to the same T - Tc(D).

The dynamic and static properties of a supercooled (non-entangled) polymer melt are investigated via molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. The system is confined between two completely smooth and purely repulsive walls. The wall-to-wall separation (film thickness), D, is varied from about 3 to about 14 times the bulk radius of gyration. Despite the geometric confinement, the supercooled films exhibit many qualitative features which were also observed in the bulk and could be analyzed in terms of mode-coupling theory (MCT). Examples are the two-step relaxation of the incoherent intermediate scattering function, the time-temperature superposition property of the late time alpha-process and the space-time factorization of the scattering function on the intermediate time scale of the MCT beta-process. An analysis of the temperature dependence of the alpha-relaxation time suggests that the critical temperature, T(c), of MCT decreases with D. If the confinement is not too strong ( D>or=10monomer diameter), the static structure factor of the film coincides with that of the bulk when compared for the same distance, T - T(c)( D), to the critical temperature. This suggests that T - T(c)( D) is an important temperature scale of our model both in the bulk and in the films.

We examine the thermodynamics of supercooled liquids focusing on the immediate vicinity of an onset temperature, TA, where system dynamics just begin to experience caging effects. Simulation data from a polymer model and from small molecule mixtures show, in agreement with experiment, that the configurational entropy becomes strongly temperature dependent below TA. Since the diffusion coefficient follows the Adam-Gibbs relationship, our results clearly establish a thermodynamic connection to the localized dynamics of glass-forming liquids.

This paper reports Monte Carlo simulation results of a polymer melt of short, non-entangled chains which are embedded between two impenetrable walls. The melt is simulated by the bond-fluctuation lattice model under athermal conditions, i.e. only excluded volume interactions between the monomers and between the monomers and the walls are taken into account. In the simulations, the wall separation is varied from about one to about 15 times the bulk radius of gyration R g . The confinement influences both static and dynamic properties of the films: Chains close to the walls preferentially orient parallel to it. This parallel orientation decays with increasing distances from the wall and vanishes for distances larger than about 2 R g . Strong confinement effects are therefore observed for film thicknesses D ≲4 R g . The preferential alignment of the chains with respect to the walls suppresses reorientations in perpendicular direction, whereas parallel reorientations take place in an environment of high monomer density. Therefore, they have a relaxation time larger than that of the bulk. On the other hand, the influence of confinement on the translation motion of the chains parallel to the walls is very weak. It almost coincides with the bulk behavior even if D ≈1.5 R g . Despite these differences between translational and reorientational dynamics, their behavior can be well reproduced by a variant of Rouse theory which only assumes orthogonality of the Rouse modes and determines the necessary input from the simulation.

The physics of simple fluids in the hydrodynamic limit and notably the connection between the proper microscopic scales and the macroscopic hydrodynamical description are nowadays well understood. In particular, the three peak shape of the dynamical structure factor S(k,ω) is a universal feature, as well as the k-dependence of the peak position (∝k) and width ∝k2, the latter accounting for the sound attenuation rate. In this paper, we present a theoretical model of monodisperse fluid, whose interactions are defined via the Voronoi tessellations of the configurations [called the Voronoi liquid and first studied in Ruscher et al., Europhys. Lett. 112, 66003 (2015)], which displays at low temperatures a marked violation of the universal features of S(k,ω) with a sound attenuation rate only ∝k. This anomalous behaviour, which apparently violates the basic symmetries of the liquid state, is traced back to the existence of a time scale which is both short enough for the viscoelastic features of the liquid to impact the relaxational dynamics and however long enough for the momentum diffusion to be substantially slower than the sound propagation on that characteristic time.

Glass formation and glassy behavior remains an important field of study in condensed matter physics, with many aspects still little understood. The approach used in this work is to observe the changes in behavior of glass-forming materials at the nanometer scale by exploring the viscoelastic properties of ultrathin free-standing glassy polymer films. An experimental measurement cell based on the nanobubble inflation method is used, consisting of inflating a polymer film suspended over an array of 5 µm diameter holes in a Si wafer. Measuring the deformation as a function of time as the material relaxes is used to determine the creep compliance. Both polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) films of a few tens of nm thickness prepared by spin-coating from solution have been studied. Interference microscopy is used to measure the deformation over several hours, which is challenging at the nanoscale due to mechanical deformations and drift. In this paper we present some of the first solutions developed to allow consistent measurements of film deformation using this novel interference nanoscopy technique. Future work will involve the measurements of creep compliance as a function of different film properties so as to be able to compare the results with theoretical predictions.

We present data of Monte Carlo simulations for monodisperse linear polymer chains in dense melts with degrees of polymerization between N=16 and N=512. The aim of this study is to investigate the crossover from Rouse-like dynamics for short chains to reptation-like dynamics for long chains. To address this problem we calculate a variety of different quantities: standard mean-square displacements of inner monomers and of the chain's center of mass, the recently proposed cubic invariant, persistence of bond-vector orientation with time, and the auto-correlation functions of the bond vector, the end-to-end vector and the Rouse modes. This analysis reveals that the crossover from non- to entangled dynamics is very protracted. Only the largest chain length N=512, which is about 13 times larger than the entanglement length, shows evidence for reptation., 38 pages of REVTeX, 14 PostScript figures

The continuous-time random walk (CTRW) describes the single-particle dynamics as a series of jumps separated by random waiting times. This description is applied to analyze trajectories from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a supercooled polymer melt. Based on the algorithm presented by Helfferich et al. [Phys. Rev. E 89, 042603 (2014)], we detect jump events of the monomers. As a function of temperature and chain length, we examine key distributions of the CTRW: the jump-length distribution (JLD), the waiting-time distribution (WTD), and the persistence-time distribution (PTD), i.e., the distribution of waiting times for the first jump. For the equilibrium (polymer) liquid under consideration, we verify that the PTD is determined by the WTD. For the mean-square displacement (MSD) of a monomer, the results for the CTRW model are compared with the underlying MD data. The MD data exhibit two regimes of subdiffusive behavior, one for the early $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ process and another at later times due to chain connectivity. By contrast, the analytical solution of the CTRW yields diffusive behavior for the MSD at all times. Empirically, we can account for the effect of chain connectivity in Monte Carlo simulations of the CTRW. The results of these simulations are then in good agreement with the MD data in the connectivity-dominated regime, but not in the early $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ regime where they systematically underestimate the MSD from the MD.
