Abstract: In this paper, we study a paratransit application in which children are transported every day from their homes to their special schools or medical-social establishments. To optimize this transportation system, the establishments collaborate to propose a joint transportation plan. We propose a new algorithm to jointly build vehicle routes that visit several establishments and simultaneously set the establishments’ opening hours. This algorithm combines a large neighborhood search, the resolution of a route-based model, and the progressive shrinkage of the planning window. It is applied to a real case from the area of Lyon in France, including 34 schools and 575 heterogeneous users served by a heterogeneous fleet of reconfigurable vehicles. On average, we show that in addition to the 10% of saving that can be expected by sharing vehicle routes between schools, 7% of additional savings can be achieved by school bell adjustment. This cost saving also decreases average user ride times and the number of vehicles required, creating longer routes that are more attractive for driver services. Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a semi-analytical approximation of Symbol Error Rate (SER) for the well known LoRa Internet of Things (IoT) modulation scheme in the following two scenarios: 1) in multi-path frequency selective fading channel with Additive White Gaussian Noise (AW GN) and 2) in the presence of a second interfering LoRa user in flat-fading AW GN channel. Performances for both coherent and non-coherent cases are derived by considering the common Discrete Fourier transform (DF T) based detector on the received LoRa waveform. By considering these two scenarios, the detector exhibits parasitic peaks that severely degrade the performance of the LoRa receiver. We propose in that sense a theoretical expression for this result, from which a unified framework based on peak detection probabilities allows us to derive SER, which is validated by Monte Carlo simulations. Fast computation of the derived closedform SER allows to carry out deep performance analysis for these two scenarios.

Abstract: One-dimensional bin-packing is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem which is strongly NP-hard. It consists of allocating a given set of items of different sizes into bins of the same capacity to minimize the number of bins used. The capacity of each bin cannot be exceeded. This paper deals with some variants of this problem to take into account the cases when there are items with uncertain sizes. The goal is to obtain robust solutions taking into account possible variations of item sizes around their nominal values. First, two robust approaches are considered which are based on a stability radius calculation, to ensure that the stability radius, measured either with the Manhattan or Chebyshev norm, is not below a given threshold. Then, a complementary robust approach is applied which is based on a relative resiliency calculation. To solve to optimality these robust variants of the bin-packing problem, a compact 0-1 linear programming formulation, which is also valid for the standard bin-packing problem, is introduced. Then, a Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition is suggested in order to provide a set-cover reformulation with a stronger linear relaxation, but an exponential number of columns. Finally, to obtain integer optimal solutions, a branch-and-price algorithm is developed, whose linear relaxation of the set-cover formulation is solved by a dynamic column generation. Numerical experiments are conducted on adapted benchmark sets from the literature. The performance of the branch-and-price algorithm allows us to investigate what protection against uncertainty is offered by each approach, and at which cost of robustness.

Abstract: It is very well known that the fraction of energy in a hadron collision going into electromagnetic particles (electrons and photons, including those from decays) has a large impact on the number of muons produced in air shower cascades. Recent measurements at the LHC confirm features that can be linked to a mixture of different underlying particle production mechanisms such as a collective statistical hadronization (core) in addition to the expected string fragmentation (corona). Since the two mechanisms have a different electromagnetic energy fraction, we present a possible connection between statistical hadronization in hadron collisions and muon production in air showers. Using a novel approach, we demonstrate that the core-corona effect as observed at the LHC could be part of the solution for the lack of muon production in simulations of high energy cosmic rays. To probe this hypothesis, we study hadronization in high energy hadron collisions using calorimetric information over a large range of pseudorapidity in combination with the multiplicity of central tracks. As an experimental observable, we propose the production of energy in electromagnetic particles versus hadrons, as a function of pseudorapidity and central charged particle multiplicity.

Abstract: International audience; This article deals with robust fixed-time stability and stabilization. First, new global robust fixed-time stability results are proposed for scalar systems by using constant and variable exponent coefficients. Then, they are applied to global robust fixed-time stabilization of a class of uncertain nonlinear second order systems by using sliding mode control. All the results are illustrated in simulation.

Abstract: International audience; Mixed Integer Linear Programs (MILPs) are usually NP-hard mathematical programming problems, which present difficulties to obtain optimal solutions in a reasonable time for large scale models. Nowadays, metaheuristics are one of the potential tools for solving this type of problems in any context. In this paper, we focus our attention on MILPs in the specific framework of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), where the determination of a score of technical efficiency of a set of Decision Making Units (DMUs) is one of the main objectives. In particular, we propose a new hyper-matheuristic grounded on a MILP-based decomposition in which the optimization problem is divided into two hierarchical subproblems. The new approach decomposes the model into discrete and continuous variables, treating each subproblem through different optimization methods. In particular, metaheuristics are used for dealing with the discrete variables, whereas exact methods are used for the set of continuous variables. The metaheuristics use an indirect representation that encodes an incomplete solution for the problem, whereas the exact method is applied to decode the solution and generate a complete solution. The experimental results, based on simulated data in the context of Data Envelopment Analysis, show that the solutions obtained through the new approach outperform those found by solving the problem globally using a metaheuristic method. Finally, regarding the new hyper-matheuristic scheme, the best algorithm selection is found for a set of cooperative metaheuristics ans exact optimization algorithms.

Abstract: International audience; Over the last years, Remote Sensing Images (RSI) analysis have started resorting to using deep neural networks to solve most of the commonly faced problems, such as detection, land cover classification or segmentation. As far as critical decision making can be based upon the results of RSI analysis, it is important to clearly identify and understand potential security threats occurring in those machine learning algorithms. Notably, it has recently been found that neural networks are particularly sensitive to carefully designed attacks, generally crafted given the full knowledge of the considered deep network. In this paper, we consider the more realistic but challenging case where one wants to generate such attacks in the case of a black-box neural network. In this case, only the prediction score of the network is accessible, given a specific input. Examples that lure away the network's prediction, while being perceptually similar to real images, are called natural or unrestricted adversarial examples. We present an original method to generate such examples, based on a variant of the Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network. We demonstrate its effectiveness on natural adversarial hyper-spectral image generation and image modification for fooling a state-of-the-art detector. Among others, we also conduct a perceptual evaluation with human annotators to better assess the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Noisy labels often occur in vision datasets, especially when they are obtained from crowdsourcing or Web scraping. We propose a new regularization method, which enables learning robust classifiers in presence of noisy data. To achieve this goal, we propose a new adversarial regularization {scheme} based on the Wasserstein distance. Using this distance allows taking into account specific relations between classes by leveraging the geometric properties of the labels space. {Our Wasserstein Adversarial Regularization (WAR) encodes a selective regularization, which promotes smoothness of the classifier between some classes, while preserving sufficient complexity of the decision boundary between others. We first discuss how and why adversarial regularization can be used in the context of noise and then show the effectiveness of our method on five datasets corrupted with noisy labels: in both benchmarks and real datasets, WAR outperforms the state-of-the-art competitors.

Abstract: International audience; We use GPS networks to measure the vertical Total Electron Content (VTEC) variations at low latitude, in three longitude sectors: America, Europe-Africa and Asia, collected during the period 2013-2017. This period corresponds to the increasing phase of the solar cycle 24 (SC#24) observed around 2013-2014 as well as the decreasing phase around 2014-2017. Our results discussed a morphological analysis of regular variations in ionization during different phases of solar activity: daytime variations, seasonal and semi-annual variations and variations based on the solar cycle 24 in three longitude sectors. In all longitude sectors, the highest VTEC values are displayed during the two months of the spring, located after sunrise and before sunset. The lowest values are found during the summer and winter seasons. We found that the winter anomaly and the presence of equinoxial peaks are the most pronounced effects in VTECs in the increasing and decreasing phase of the SC#24. A strong asymmetry is detected between equinoxial peaks and the location of peaks occurring in March/April and October/November at maximum in the solar flux variations during the increase phase. We show that the daily VTEC maximum values were registered between 14:00 and 16:00 LT and the minimum values between 4:00 and 6:00 LT. Double ionization peak in the morning and evening is observed in VTEC annual variations, due to the proximity of the equatorial fountain stations. From the statistical analysis part, we observed practically the same distribution of the different classes of VTEC (two peaks, bell-shaped and plateau-shaped) variations in the three sectors of longitude. These observations indicate longitudinal variation in the presence of the winter anomaly in the Equatorial Ionized Anomaly (EIA) region. Additionally, we can note a longitudinal variation of the spring-autumn VTEC asymmetry in the EIA region during the five years 2013-2017. We observe also that the occurrence of nocturnal peak recorded around 19 local time (LT) shows the same characteristics as the vertical drift E x B (B: magnetic field is perpendicular to E: electric field.) with respect to solar cycle, season and longitude. Three essential characteristics we noted: 1) the occurrence of the nocturnal peak generally follows the solar cycle. 2) The occurrence of the nocturnal peak is generally stronger at the equinoxes than at the solstices. 3) The occurrence of the nocturnal peak is stronger in the Europe-Africa and America sectors than in the Asia sector. As a result, nocturnal peak occurrence is well related to the PRE at the origin of the GNSS signal scintillations.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present an ultra-wideband full-duplex antenna system constituted of a wideband 4-element Vivaldi array and wideband microstrip-to-slotline baluns. The proposed system is characterized by its simplicity, high directivity, and high self-interference cancellation levels over a wide frequency bandwidth. The system is abricated using basic PCB technology and can provide at least 50 dB of self-interference cancellation over the bandwidth of operation, 4 - 40 GHz, with an average gain of 7.8 dBi. The system has a size of 8 cm x 8 cm x 9.4 cm and can be used as a high data rate link between two distant wireless nodes. To assess the merits of the proposed system and compare it to other published works, a new figure of merit (FoMWFD) dedicated to wide-band full-duplex antenna topologies is introduced in this paper.

Abstract: International audience; In this chapter, we introduce Kappa, a site graph rewriting language. As a realistic case study, we model a population of hepatic stellate cells under the effect of the TGFB1 protein. Kappa offers a rule-centric approach, inspired from chemistry, where interaction rules locally modify the state of a system that is defined as a graph of components, connected or not. In this case study, the components will be occurrences of hepatic stellate cells in different states, and occurrences of the protein TGFB1. The protein TGFB1 induces different behaviors of hepatic stellate cells thereby contribut- ing either to tissue repair or to fibrosis. Better understanding the overall behavior of the mechanisms that are involved in these processes is a key issue to identify markers and therapeutic targets likely to promote the resolution of fibrosis at the expense of its progression.

Abstract: Genome Rearrangements are events that affect large stretches of genomes during evolution. Many mathematical models have been used to estimate the evolutionary distance between two genomes based on genome rearrangements. However, most of them focused on the (order of the) genes of a genome, disregarding other important elements in it. Recently, researchers have shown that considering regions between each pair of genes, called intergenic regions, can enhance distance estimation in realistic data. Two of the most studied genome rearrangements are the reversal, which inverts a sequence of genes, and the transposition, which occurs when two adjacent gene sequences swap their positions inside the genome. In this work, we study the transposition distance between two genomes, but we also consider intergenic regions, a problem we name Sorting by Intergenic Transpositions. We show that this problem is NP-hard and propose two approximation algorithms, with factors 3.5 and 2.5, considering two distinct definitions for the problem. We also investigate the signed reversal and transposition distance between two genomes considering their intergenic regions. This second problem is called Sorting by Signed Intergenic Reversals and Intergenic Transpositions. We show that this problem is NP-hard and develop two approximation algorithms, with factors 3 and 2.5. We check how these algorithms behave when assigning weights for genome rearrangements. Finally, we implemented all these algorithms and tested them on real and simulated data.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a longitudinal control framework for platooning in an urban environment. The targetted application is to redistribute vehicles involved in car-sharing systems, where only the leader vehicle is human-driven. We propose a platoon model and control law considering actuator dynamics. This control relies on a hybrid Information Flow Topology (IFT), where the leader broadcasts its state but each follower only measures the position of its predecessor. A consensusbased control law incorporates the effect of the network/sensor time delay and the variable velocity of the leader. Conditions for the platoon internal and string stability are given. Experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the framework in simulation and real experiments with three commercial cars.

Abstract: International audience; Introduction/aims: Respiratory status is a key determinant of prognosis in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). We aimed to evaluate the determinants of diaphragm ultrasound and its performance in predicting restrictive respiratory patterns in DMD.Methods: This was a retrospective study of DMD patients followed in our center and admitted for an annual checkup from 2015 to 2018. We included DMD patients who underwent diaphragm ultrasound and pulmonary functional tests.Results: This study included 74 patients with DMD. The right diaphragm thickening fraction (TF) was significantly associated with age (P = .001), Walton score (P = .012), inspiratory capacity (IC) (P = .004), upright forced vital capacity (FVC) (P < .0001), supine FVC (P = .038), and maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) (P = .002). Right diaphragm excursion was significantly associated with age (P < .0001), steroid use (P = .008), history of spinal fusion (P < .0001), body mass index (BMI) (P = .002), Walton score (P < .0001), IC (P < .0001), upright FVC (P < .0001), supine FVC (P < .0001), and MIP (P < .0001). A right diaphragm TF >28% and a right diaphragm excursion>25.4 mm were associated with an FVC >50% with, respectively, an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.95 (P = .001) and 0.93 (P < .001). A left diaphragm TF >26.8% and a left diaphragm excursion >21.5 mm were associated with an FVC >50% with, respectively, an AUC of 0.95 (P = .011) and 0.97 (P < .001).Discussion: Diaphragm excursion and diaphragm TF can predict restrictive pulmonary insufficiency in DMD.

Abstract: We consider feedback control systems where sensor readings may be compromised by a malicious attacker intending on causing damage to the system. We study this problem at the supervisory layer of the control system, using discrete event systems techniques. We assume that the attacker can edit the outputs from the sensors of the system before they reach the supervisory controller. In this context, we formulate the problem of synthesizing a supervisor that is robust against the class of edit attacks on the sensor readings and present a solution methodology for this problem. This methodology blends techniques from games on automata with imperfect information with results from supervisory control theory of partially-observed discrete event systems. Abstract: International audience; Quantum computing is at the top of the agenda for several countries. They acknowledge the strategic importance of it. They invest significant public funds in the development of this technology. While some show unconditional enthusiasm, others are more moderate and even very critical with respect to the promises of quantum computing. It is not easy to navigate for a non-expert in the field. Does quantum computing have a real advantage or is it rather a utopia? Moreover, is quantum computing, as they say, a real threat to computer and Internet security? This article takes the point of view of non-experts and attempts to shed light on these questions. In turn, we consider quantum computing as an advantage, a utopia, or a security threat. We will briefly look at the applications that we think are the most promising. Then, we review the different efforts made by the participants engaged in the race for the quantum computer. Finally, we try to project ourselves into the future.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we provide three notes on scheduling unit-length jobs with precedence constraints to minimize the total completion time. First, we propose an exact algorithm for in-trees, of which the complexity depends mainly on the graph height, i.e., the length of the longest chain of the precedence graph. We show that this work improves the algorithm in the literature both theoretically and experimentally. Second, we close the open problem for level-orders by showing how it is polynomially solvable. Third, we prove that preemptive scheduling in-trees is strongly NP-hard with arbitrary number of machines, of which the complexity was also open.

Abstract: International audience; Causal broadcast is a communication abstraction built on top of point-to-point send/receive networks, which ensures that any two messages whose broadcasts are causally related (as captured by Lamport's "happened before" relation) are delivered in their sending order. Several causal broadcast algorithms have been designed for failure-free and crash-prone asynchronous message-passing systems. This article first gives a formal definition of a causal broadcast abstraction in the presence of Byzantine processes, in the form of two equivalent characterizations, and then presents a simple causal broadcast algorithm that implements it. The main difficulty in the design and the proof of this algorithm comes from the very nature of Byzantine faults: Byzantine processes may have arbitrary behavior, and the algorithm must ensure that correct processes (i) maintain a coherent view of causality and (ii) are never prevented from communicating between themselves. To this end, the algorithm is built modularly, namely it works on top of any Byzantine-tolerant reliable broadcast algorithm. Due to this modularity, the proposed algorithm is easy to understand and inherits the computability assumptions (notably the maximal number of processes that may be Byzantine) and the message/time complexities of the underlying reliable broadcast on top of which it is built.

Abstract: International audience; Over the past few years, we have witnessed the emergence of large knowledge graphs built by extracting and combining information from multiple sources. This has propelled many advances in query processing over knowledge graphs, however the aspect of providing provenance explanations for query results has so far been mostly neglected. We therefore propose a novel method, SPARQLprov, based on query rewriting, to compute how-provenance polynomials for SPARQL queries over knowledge graphs. Contrary to existing works, SPARQLprov is system-agnostic and can be applied to standard and already deployed SPARQL engines without the need of customized extensions. We rely on spm-semirings to compute polynomial annotations that respect the property of commutation with homomorphisms on monotonic and non-monotonic SPARQL queries without aggregate functions. Our evaluation on real and synthetic data shows that SPARQLprov over standard engines incurs an acceptable runtime overhead w.r.t. the original query, competing with state-of-the-art solutions for how-provenance computation.

Abstract: International audience; Licensed Shared Access (LSA) is a new concept proposed by the radio spectrum policy group in order to optimize spectrum usage: a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) can access temporarily to other incumbent's spectrum after obtaining a license. The licensing process is made via an auction mechanism. The mechanisms proposed in the literature for the LSA context are oneshot auction mechanisms which allocate all the available spectrum as a unique block. In this paper, we first show how to increase the performance of those auctions (in terms of revenue, efficiency and fairness of the allocation) while preserving truthful bidding, by splitting spectrum and converting single block auctions into multi-block auctions. Simulation results illustrate how appropriately choosing the number of blocks allows to increase the aforementioned metrics. Second, we show how to convert one-shot mechanisms to equivalent ascending mechanisms (in terms of allocations and payments) so that we add transparency and privacy to the auction.

Abstract: International audience; Although the holy grail to store and manipulate data in Edge infrastructures is yet to be found, state-of-the-art approaches demonstrated the relevance of replication strategies that bring content closer to consumers: The latter enjoy better response time while the volume of data passing through the network decreases overall. Unfortunately, locating the closest replica of a specific content requires indexing every live replica along with its location. Relying on remote services enters in contradiction with the properties of Edge infrastructures as locating replicas may effectively take more time than actually downloading content. At the opposite, maintaining such an index at every node would prove overly costly in terms of memory and traffic, especially since nodes can create and destroy replicas at any time.In this paper, we abstract content indexing as distributed partitioning: every node only indexes its closest replica, and connected nodes with a similar index compose a partition. Our decentralized implementation AS-cast is (i) efficient, for it uses partitions to lock down the traffic generated by its operations to relevant nodes, yet it (ii) guarantees that every node eventually acknowledges its partition despite concurrent operations. Our complexity analysis supported by simulations shows that AS-cast scales well in terms of generated traffic and termination time. As such, AS-cast can constitute a new building block for geo-distributed services.; Bien qu’une solution parfaite pour le stockage et la manipulation de données au niveau des infrastructures Edge reste encore à déterminer, les approches de l’état de l’art ont d’ors et déjà démontré la pertinence des stratégies de réplication qui rapprochent le contenu des consommateurs : ces derniers bénéficient de meilleurs temps de réponse et le volume de données transitant par le réseau diminue globalement. Malheureusement, localiser la réplique la plus proche d’un contenu spécifique nécessite d’indexer chacune des répliques existantes avec leurs informations de localisation. Se fier à des services distants entre en contradiction avec les propriétés des infrastructures Edge de telle sorte que localiser des répliques prend davantage de temps que de télécharger le contenu. À l’opposé, chaque nœud ne peut maintenir l’index des toutes les répliques existantes car cela s’avèrerait extrêmement coûteux en termes de mémoire et de trafic, en particulier lorsque les nœuds sont libres de créer ou détruire des répliques à n’importe quel moment.Dans cet article, nous abstrayons l’indexation de contenu par un problème de partitionnement réparti : chacun des nœuds maintient l’index de sa réplique la plus proche, et les nœuds connectés possédant un index similaire font partie d’une même partition. Notre implémentation décentralisée nommée AS-cast est (i) efficace, car elle utilise les partitions afin de confiner le trafic généré par son fonctionnement aux seuls nœuds concernés, tout en (ii) garantissant le fait que chaque nœud finisse par identifier la partition à laquelle il appartient, et ce malgré les opérations concurrentes. Notre analyse en complexité appuyée par des simulations montre que AS-cast passe à l’échelle en termes de trafic généré et de temps de terminaison. De ce fait, AS-cast peut constituer les nouvelles fondations pour construire des services géo-distribués.

Abstract: International audience; Unstructured data in electronic health records, represented by clinical texts, are a vast source of healthcare information because they describe a patient's journey, including clinical findings, procedures, and information about the continuity of care. The publication of several studies on temporal relation extraction from clinical texts during the last decade and the realization of multiple shared tasks highlight the importance of this research theme. Therefore, we propose a review of temporal relation extraction in clinical texts. We analyzed 105 articles and verified that relations between events and document creation time, a coarse temporality type, were addressed with traditional machine learning–based models with few recent initiatives to push the state-of-the-art with deep learning–based models. For temporal relations between entities (event and temporal expressions) in the document, factors such as dataset imbalance because of candidate pair generation and task complexity directly affect the system's performance. The state-of-the-art resides on attention-based models, with contextualized word representations being fine-tuned for temporal relation extraction. However, further experiments and advances in the research topic are required until real-time clinical domain applications are released. Furthermore, most of the publications mainly reside on the same dataset, hindering the need for new annotation projects that provide datasets for different medical specialties, clinical text types, and even languages.

Abstract: Nonnegative Tucker decomposition (NTD), a tensor decomposition model, has received increased interest in the recent years because of its ability to blindly extract meaningful patterns, in particular in Music Information Retrieval. Nevertheless, existing algorithms to compute NTD are mostly designed for the Euclidean loss. This work proposes a multiplicative updates algorithm to compute NTD with the beta-divergence loss, often considered a better loss for audio processing. We notably show how to implement efficiently the multiplicative rules using tensor algebra. Finally, we show on a music structure analysis task that unsupervised NTD fitted with beta-divergence loss outperforms earlier results obtained with the Euclidean loss., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table, 1 algorithm. Abstract: Our paper deals with the stabilization of a class of time-dependent linear autonomous complex systems with a switched structure. The initially given switched dynamic system is assumed to be controlled by a specific state feedback strategy associated with the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) type control. The proposed control design guarantees stabilization of the closed-loop system for all of the possible location transitions. In the solution procedure of the Algebraic Riccati Equation related to the LQR control strategy, only the knowledge of the algebraic structure related to the switched system are needed. We prove that the proposed optimal LQR type state feedback control design stabilizes the closed-loop switched system for every possible active location. The theoretical approach proposed in this paper is finally applied to a model of the Single Wing Quadrotor Aircraft, when changing from its Quadrotor Flight Envelope to its Airplane Flight Envelope.

Abstract: International audience; In the context of building acoustics and the acoustic diagnosis of an existing room, this paper introduces and investigates a new approach to estimate mean absorption coefficients solely from a room impulse response (RIR). This inverse problem is tackled via virtually-supervised learning, namely, the RIR-to-absorption mapping is implicitly learned by regression on a simulated dataset using artificial neural networks. We focus on simple models based on well-understood architectures. The critical choices of geometric, acoustic and simulation pa- rameters used to train the models are extensively discussed and studied, while keeping in mind conditions that are representative of the field of building acoustics. Estimation errors from the learned neural models are compared to those obtained with classical formulas thatrequire knowledge of the room's geometry and reverberation times. Extensive comparisons made on a variety of simulated test sets highlight different conditions under which the learned models can overcome the well-known limitations of the diffuse sound field hypothesis under-lying these formulas. Results obtained on real RIRs measured in an acoustically configurable room show that at 1 kHz and above, the proposed approach performs comparably to classical models when reverberation times can be reliably estimated, and continues to work even when they cannot.

Abstract: International audience; Massive machine-type communications (mMTC) is one of the main services delivered by the fifth Generation (5G) mobile network. The traditional cellular architecture where all devices connect to the base station is not energy efficient. For this reason, the use of device-to-device (D2D) communications is considered to reduce the energy consumption of mMTC devices. The main idea is to use nearby user equipment (UE) as a relay and establish with it D2D communication. However, the relay selection process also consumes energy, and this consumption can be significant compared to the energy consumed during the data transmission phase. In this paper, we propose a distributed energy-efficient D2D relaying mechanism for mMTC applications. This mechanism favors the selection of the UEs with low path loss with the mMTC device. Through mathematical analysis and simulations, we show that our mechanism allows a reduction of the total energy consumption of mMTC devices (up to 75% compared to direct transmission) when they have an unfavorable link budget. Moreover, our mechanism achieves almost constant energy consumption for a large range of UE densities and distances between the mMTC device and the base station.

Abstract: Aims The aim of this study was to describe a quantitative 3D CT method to measure rotator cuff muscle volume, atrophy, and balance in healthy controls and in three pathological shoulder cohorts. Methods In all, 102 CT scans were included in the analysis: 46 healthy, 21 cuff tear arthropathy (CTA), 18 irreparable rotator cuff tear (IRCT), and 17 primary osteoarthritis (OA). The four rotator cuff muscles were manually segmented and their volume, including intramuscular fat, was calculated. The normalized volume (NV) of each muscle was calculated by dividing muscle volume to the patient’s scapular bone volume. Muscle volume and percentage of muscle atrophy were compared between muscles and between cohorts. Results Rotator cuff muscle volume was significantly decreased in patients with OA, CTA, and IRCT compared to healthy patients (p < 0.0001). Atrophy was comparable for all muscles between CTA, IRCT, and OA patients, except for the supraspinatus, which was significantly more atrophied in CTA and IRCT (p = 0.002). In healthy shoulders, the anterior cuff represented 45% of the entire cuff, while the posterior cuff represented 40%. A similar partition between anterior and posterior cuff was also found in both CTA and IRCT patients. However, in OA patients, the relative volume of the anterior (42%) and posterior cuff (45%) were similar. Conclusion This study shows that rotator cuff muscle volume is significantly decreased in patients with OA, CTA, or IRCT compared to healthy patients, but that only minimal differences can be observed between the different pathological groups. This suggests that the influence of rotator cuff muscle volume and atrophy (including intramuscular fat) as an independent factor of outcome may be overestimated. Abstract: International audience; The representation of a high-impact weather (HIW) event over southern France is evaluated in Météo-France forecasts, and the sensitivity of the HIW forecast to the upstream upper-level flow and the Mediterranean and North Atlantic humidity structure prior to the event is quantified. The event occurred in October 2016 during the international field experiment NAWDEX. The approach of an upper-level potential vorticity (PV) cut-off, referred to as cut-off Sanchez, triggered extreme precipitation over southern France. Many 2- to 7-day ensemble forecasts predicted the maximum of the extreme precipitation and the location of the upper-level PV cut-off too far to the east. This eastward shift primarily resulted from an underestimation of the cut-off intensity two days before the HIW and the subsequent downstream propagation and amplification of these errors in the vicinity of Sanchez. Improving the representation of the cut-off two days before the event significantly improved the forecast quality. Another error source were inaccuracies in the moisture structure in the eastern North Atlantic. Specifically, an underestimation of the moisture in the warm conveyor belt inflow led to errors in the low- and upper-level circulation that eventually contributed to the eastward shift of the HIW two days later. Corrections in the eastern North Atlantic humidity structure further improved the forecast quality. On the other hand, corrections in the Mediterranean humidity structure had only a small impact on the accuracy of the forecast. The findings illustrate the importance of downstream error propagation and moist diabatic processes for the prediction of extreme weather over Europe, and demonstrate how targeted changes in the PV and humidity field a few days in advance can improve the quality of the forecasts.

Abstract: This paper addresses the optimization problem of managing the research efforts of a set of sensors in order to minimize the probability of non-detection of a target. A novel formulation of the problem taking into account the traveling costs between the searched areas is proposed; it is more realistic and extends some previous problems addressed in the literature. A greedy heuristic algorithm is devised, it builds a solution gradually, using a linear approximation of the objective function refined at each step. The heuristic algorithm is complemented by a lower bound based on a piecewise linear approximation of the objective function with a parametric error, and extended to the case where the target is moving. Finally, a set of numerical experiments is performed to analyze and evaluate the proposed contributions.

Abstract: International audience; This paper describes a practical Slepian-Wolf source coding scheme based on Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes. It considers the realistic setup where the parameters of the statistical model between the source and the side information are unknown. A novel Self-Corrected Belief-Propagation (SC-BP) algorithm is proposed in order to make the coding scheme robust to incorrect model parameters by introducing some memory inside the LDPC decoder. A Two Dimensional Density Evolution (2D-DE) analysis is then developed to predict the theoretical performance of the SC-BP decoder. Both the 2D-DE analysis and Monte-Carlo simulations confirm the robustness of the SC-BP decoder. The proposed solution allows for an important complexity reduction and shows a performance very close to existing methods which jointly estimate the model parameters and the source sequence.

Abstract: International audience; We present a haptic teleoperation system capable of steering flexible needles under ultrasound imaging toward a target. With respect to similar works, this approach enables intuitive control of the needle motion while providing the user with 3D navigation and needle tip cutting force using a combination of kinesthetic and vibrotactile haptic feedback. The needle is tracked during the insertion using a 3D ultrasound probe. A friction estimation algorithm extracts salient information about the cutting force at the needle tip from a force sensor placed at the needle base. A grounded haptic interface enables natural 6-DoF control of the needle motion while providing kinesthetic feedback, and a wearable cutaneous interface on the forearm provides distributed vibrotactile sensations. We carried out a human subject study to validate the insertion system in a gelatine phantom and compare seven different feedback techniques. The best performance was registered when providing navigation cues through kinesthetic feedback and needle tip cutting force through cutaneous vibrotactile feedback. In this modality, results showed an 87% accuracy improvement with respect to providing no haptic feedback at all.

Abstract: International audience; Next generation wireless networks are expected to be highly heterogeneous, multi-layered, with embedded intelligence at both the core and edge of the network. In such a context, system-level performance evaluation will be very important to formulate relevant insights into tradeoffs that govern such a complex system. Over the past decade, stochastic geometry (SG) has emerged as a powerful analytical tool to evaluate system-level performance of wireless networks and capture their tendency towards heterogeneity. However, with the imminent onset of this crucial new decade, where global commercialization of fifthgeneration (5G) is expected to emerge and essential research questions related to beyond fifth-generation (B5G) are intended to be identified, we are wondering about the role that a powerful tool like SG should play. In this paper, we first aim to track and summarize the novel SG models and techniques developed during the last decade in the evaluation of wireless networks. Next, we will outline how SG has been used to capture the properties of emerging radio access networks (RANs) for 5G/B5G and quantify the benefits of key enabling technologies. Finally, we will discuss new horizons that will breathe new life into the use of SG in the foreseeable future. For instance, using SG to evaluate performance metrics in the visionary paradigm of molecular communications. Also, we will review how SG is envisioned to cooperate with machine learning seen as a crucial component in the race towards ubiquitous wireless intelligence. Another important insight is Grothendieck toposes considered as a powerful mathematical concept that can help to solve longstanding problems formulated in SG.

Abstract: International audience; Hardware cache compression derives from software-compression research; yet, its implementation is not a straightforward translation, since it must abide by multiple restrictions to comply with area, power, and latency constraints. This study sheds light on the challenges of adopting compression in cache design—from the shrinking of the data until its physical placement. The goal of this article is not to summarize proposals but to put in evidence the solutions they employ to handle those challenges. An in-depth description of the main characteristics of multiple methods is provided, as well as criteria that can be used as a basis for the assessment of such schemes. It is expected that this article will ease the understanding of decisions to be taken for the design of compressed systems and provide directions for future work.

Abstract: International audience; Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), also known as "Blockchain" is one of the trendiest digital innovations in our era. While firstly applied to cryptocurrencies, the trustworthiness inherent to DLT paved the way to many new usages notably in sectors such as land registration or banking where confidence in transactions is crucial. In the telecommunications sector, DLTs have enabled the development of future network architectures, such as new decentralised and multiactor access networks. Having identified this as a great opportunity, we designed BALAdIN, a novel Blockchain-powered decentralised application that improves network coverage thanks to partnerships. Indeed, it allows a crowd of local actors such as shop tenants to deploy mobile cells with the help of a consortium of telcos. The traffic conveyed by each actor is traced thanks to a decentralised and trustworthy network monitoring mechanism we have designed. This mechanism both solves the centralisation dilemma caused by Blockchain Oracles and allows each actor to be rewarded depending on usage. In this paper, we focus on the description of this network usage monitoring mechanism. We then study the feasibility of its implementation onto regular Blockchain by studying its performance regarding the throughput and the propagation of the resulting Blockchain transactions. Finally, we derive a scalable deployment scheme for our novel Blockchain-powered decentralised network metering application BALAdIN.

Abstract: International audience; IEEE Std 802.15.4-2015 Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) is the de facto Medium Access Control (MAC) mechanism for industrial applications. It renders communications more resilient to interference by spreading them over the time (time-slotted) and the frequency (channel-hopping) domains. The 6TiSCH architecture bases itself on this new MAC layer to enable high reliability communication in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In particular, it manages the construction of a distributed communication schedule that continuously adapts to changes in the network. In this paper, we first provide a thorough description of the 6TiSCH architecture, the 6TiSCH Operation Sublayer (6top), and the Minimal Scheduling Function (MSF). We then study its behavior and reactivity from low to high traffic rates by employing the Python-based 6TiSCH simulator. Our performance evaluation results demonstrate that the convergence pattern of MSF is the root cause of the majority of packet losses observed in the network. We also show that MSF is prone to over-provisioning of the network resources, especially in the case of varying traffic load. We propose a mathematical model to predict the convergence pattern of MSF. Finally we investigate the impact of varying parameters on the behavior of the scheduling function.

Abstract: International audience; Defenders fighting against Advanced Persistent Threats need to discover the propagation area of an adversary as quickly as possible. This discovery takes place through a phase of an incident response operation called Threat Hunting, where defenders track down attackers within the compromised network. In this article, we propose a formal model that dissects and abstracts elements of an attack, from both attacker and defender perspectives. This model leads to the construction of two persistent graphs on a common set of objects and components allowing for (1) an omniscient actor to compare, for both defender and attacker, the gap in knowledge and perceptions; (2) the attacker to become aware of the traces left on the targeted network; (3) the defender to improve the quality of Threat Hunting by identifying false-positives and adapting logging policy to be oriented for investigations. In this article, we challenge this model using an attack campaign mimicking APT29, a real-world threat, in a scenario designed by the MITRE Corporation. We measure the quality of the defensive architecture experimentally and then determine the most effective strategy to exploit data collected by the defender in order to extract actionable Cyber Threat Intelligence, and finally unveil the attacker.

Abstract: International audience; In this article we propose a new solution to the forward dynamics of Cosserat beams with in perspective, its application to continuum and soft robotics manipulation and locomotion. In contrast to usual approaches, it is based on the non-linear parametrization of the beam shape by its strain fields and their discretization on a functional basis of strain modes. While remaining geometrically exact, the approach provides a minimal set of ordinary differential equations in the usual Lagrange matrix form that can be solved with standard explicit time-integrators. Inspired from rigid robotics, the calculation of the matrices of the Lagrange model is performed with a continuous inverse Newton-Euler algorithm. The approach is tested on several numerical benches of non-linear structural statics, as well as further examples illustrating its capabilities for dynamics.

Abstract: This paper studies different machine learning methods for solving the regression problem of estimating the marine surge value given meteorological data. The marine surge is defined as the difference between the sea level predicted with the tides equations, and the real measured sea level. Different approaches are explored, from linear regression to multilayer perceptrons and recurrent neural networks. Stochastic networks are also considered, as they enable us to calculate a prediction error. These models are compared with a baseline method, which uses physical equations to calculate the surge. We show that all the statistical models outperform the baseline, being the multilayer perceptron the one that performs the best. (It reaches an $$R^2$$ score of 0.68 and an RMSE of 7.3 cm.)

Abstract: This paper deals with an optimization problem, which arises when a new transfer line has to be designed subject to a limited number of available machines, cycle time constraint, and precedence relations between necessary production tasks. The studied problem consists in assigning a given set of tasks to blocks and then blocks to machines so as to find the most robust line configuration under task processing time uncertainty. The robustness of a given line configuration is measured via its stability radius, i.e., as the maximal amplitude of deviations from the nominal value of the processing time of uncertain tasks that do not violate the solution admissibility. In this work, for considering different hypotheses on uncertainty, the stability radius is based upon the Manhattan and Chebyshev norms. For each norm, the problem is proven to be strongly NP-hard and a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) is proposed for addressing it. To accelerate the seeking of optimal solutions, two variants of a heuristic method as well as several reduction rules are devised for the corresponding MILP. Computational results are reported on a collection of instances derived from classic benchmark data used in the literature for the Transfer Line Balancing Problem.

Abstract: One of the strategic objectives of supply chains in the automotive industry is the development of international sourcing. Renault works with a global network of cross-docking platforms to link distant assembly plants with first-tier suppliers. These platforms act both as information and physical consolidation points. At shop-floor, inland deliveries are received, sorted, repacked (if needed) and loaded onto containers for overseas transportation. Distribution and operation planning are key activities in such a cross-dock platform but despite its interdependency, current research considers them separately. This paper presents a detailed analysis of Renault cross-dock platforms called ILN (International Logistics Networks), their planning process and physical flows. An integer linear programming model to plan jointly the distribution and shop-floor operations in a cross-dock platform of Renault is developed. The objective is to minimize total cost composed of transportation cost (inbound and outbound), cost of internal resources and storage cost. Numerical offline tests of the model with CPLEX, based on real data for a number of past periods, have showed a 13% reduction of total cost. These encouraging tests confirm both the ability of the proposed approach to deal with real-size instances and the potential gains which can be obtained by considering decision related to distribution and planning together. Taking into account these results, the part of model concerning inbound logistics was integrated in the planning system used in a Renault ILN. The results of the first exploitation period have shown a reduction of 20% of inbound transportation cost comparing with the previous period without increasing the other costs.

Abstract: International audience; In extractable source coding, multiple correlated sources are jointly compressed but can be individually accessed in the compressed domain. Performance is measured in terms of storage and transmission rates. This problem has multiple applications in interactive video compression such as Free Viewpoint Television or navigation in 360° videos. In this letter, we analyze and improve a practical coding scheme. We consider a binarized coding scheme, which insures a low decoding complexity. First, we show that binarization does not impact the transmission rate but only slightly the storage with respect to a symbol based approach. Second, we propose a Q-ary symmetric model to represent the pairwise joint distribution of the sources instead of the widely used Laplacian model. Third, we introduce a novel pre-estimation strategy, which allows to infer the symbols of some bit planes without any additional data and therefore permits to reduce the storage and transmission rates. In the context of 360° images, the proposed scheme allows to save 14% and 34% bitrate in storage and transmission rates respectively.

Abstract: International audience; Multi-robot task allocation (MRTA) problems require that robots make complex choices based on their understanding of a dynamic and uncertain environment. As a distributed computing system, the Multi-Robot System (MRS) must handle and distribute processing tasks (MRpTA). Each robot must contribute to the overall e ciency of the system based solely on a limited knowledge of its environment. Market-based methods are a natural candidate to deal processing tasks over a MRS but recent and numerous developments in reinforcement learning and especially Deep Q-Networks (DQN) provide new opportunities to solve the problem. In this paper we propose a new DQN-based method so that robots can learn directly from experience, and compare it with Market-based approaches as well with centralized and purely local solutions. Our study shows the relevancy of learning-based methods and also highlight research challenges to solve the processing load-balancing problem in MRS.

Recent studies based on biomechanical modeling have shown that mechanical forces play a crucial role in the formation of cortical convolutions. However, the effect of biophysical parameters in these models remain unclear. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the cortical growth, the initial geometry and the initial cortical thickness on folding patterns. In addition, we not only use several descriptors of the folds such as the dimensionless mean curvature, the surface-based three-dimensional gyrification index and the sulcal depth, but also propose a new metric to quantify the folds orientation. The results demonstrate that the cortical growth mode does almost not affect the complexity degree of surface morphology; the variation in the initial geometry changes the folds orientation and depth, and in particular, the slenderer the shape is, the more folds along its longest axis could be seen and the deeper the sulci become. Moreover, the thinner the initial cortical thickness is, the higher the spatial frequency of the folds is, but the shallower the sulci become, which is in agreement with the previously reported effects of cortical thickness.

Abstract: In this article, we propose to apply 3-D printing technology to the design and realization of honeycomb microwave absorbers. First, printability of simple honeycomb structures, made of a lossy dielectric material, was evaluated and validated by measurement in the 2–18 GHz frequency band. Effective dielectric properties of honeycomb structures with different dimensions are also discussed. Then, the interest of 3-D printing technology was highlighted by the design, fabrication, and measurement of a multiscale honeycomb absorber that can significantly increase the relative bandwidth. The 3-D printed honeycomb absorbers are compared with others technologies. The potential of this technology was also illustrated by the fabrication and measurement of a pyramidal honeycomb absorber that demonstrates an absorption level of more than 22.9 dB over the 2–18 GHz frequency band.

Abstract: International audience; Remote sensing data from hyperspectral cameras suffer from limited spatial resolution, in which a single pixel of a hyperspectral image may contain information from several materials in the field of view. Blind hyperspectral image unmixing is the process of identifying the pure spectra of individual materials (i.e., endmembers) and their proportions (i.e., abundances) at each pixel. In this paper, we propose a novel blind hyperspectral unmixing model based on the graph total variation (gTV) regularization, which can be solved efficiently by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). To further alleviate the computational cost, we apply the Nyström method to approximate a fully-connected graph by a small subset of sampled points. Furthermore, we adopt the Merriman-Bence-Osher (MBO) scheme to solve the gTV-involved subproblem in ADMM by decomposing a grayscale image into a bit-wise form. A variety of numerical experiments on synthetic and real hyperspectral images are conducted, showcasing the potential of the proposed method in terms of identification accuracy and computational efficiency.

Abstract: International audience; Coupled matrix and tensor factorizations (CMTF) are frequently used to jointly analyze data from multiple sources, also called data fusion. However, different characteristics of datasets stemming from multiple sources pose many challenges in data fusion and require to employ various regularizations, constraints, loss functions and different types of coupling structures between datasets. In this paper, we propose a flexible algorithmic framework for coupled matrix and tensor factorizations which utilizes Alternating Optimization (AO) and the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). The framework facilitates the use of a variety of constraints, loss functions and couplings with linear transformations in a seamless way. Numerical experiments on simulated and real datasets demonstrate that the proposed approach is accurate, and computationally efficient with comparable or better performance than available CMTF methods for Frobenius norm loss, while being more flexible. Using Kullback-Leibler divergence on count data, we demonstrate that the algorithm yields accurate results also for other loss functions.

Abstract: International audience; Big data collection and storage have become one of the most obvious challenge in this era. Indeed, much of that data is collected thanky to a huge number of connected devices in sensing-based IoT applications. Thus, in order to deal with data growth in such applications, researchers have focused on data reduction approach as an efficient solution for minimizing the amount of data collection and saving the limited sensor energy in such networks. Mainly, data reduction approach relies on various kinds of data processing techniques such that aggregation, compression, prediction, clustering, sensing frequency adaptation and spatial-temporal correlation. However, each of those techniques has its own advantages and disadvantages regarding sensor energy saving, data reduction ratio, data accuracy, complexity, etc. In this paper, we propose a hybrid data collection and energy saving mechanism, called All-in-One, for sensing-based IoT applications. The proposed mechanism takes advantages from existing data reduction techniques while optimizing various performance metrics. All-in-One relies on the cluster network architecture and works on three main phases: on-period, in-period and in-node. The first phase, e.g. on-period, allows each sensor node to search the similarity among its periodic collected data then to reduce its data transmission to the Cluster-Head (CH) by applying either data aggregation, compression or prediction technique. The second phase, e.g. in-period, allows each sensor to study the variation of the monitored condition then to reduce its data collection according to two techniques, on-off transmission or adapting sensing frequency. The last phase, e.g. in-node, is applied at the CH level and aims to remove the redundancy among data collected by neighboring nodes, based on in-network correlation or data clustering techniques, before sending the data to the sink. We conducted simulations on real sensor data in order to evaluate the efficiency of our mechanism, in terms of several performance metrics, compared to other exiting techniques.
