As JWST begins to return observations, it is more important than ever that exoplanet climate models can consistently and correctly predict the observability of exoplanets, retrieval of their data, and interpretation of planetary environments from that data. Model intercomparisons play a crucial role in this context, especially now when few data are available to validate model predictions. The CUISINES Working Group of NASA's Nexus for Exoplanet System Science (NExSS) supports a systematic approach to evaluating the performance of exoplanet models, and provides here a framework for conducting community-organized exoplanet Model Intercomparison Projects (exoMIPs). The CUISINES framework adapts Earth climate community practices specifically for the needs of exoplanet researchers, encompassing a range of model types, planetary targets, and parameter space studies. It is intended to help researchers to work collectively, equitably, and openly toward common goals. The CUISINES framework rests on five principles: 1) Define in advance what research question(s) the exoMIP is intended to address. 2) Create an experimental design that maximizes community participation, and advertise it widely. 3) Plan a project timeline that allows all exoMIP members to participate fully. 4) Generate data products from model output for direct comparison to observations. 5) Create a data management plan that is workable in the present and scalable for the future. Within the first years of its existence, CUISINES is already providing logistical support to 10 exoMIPs, and will continue to host annual workshops for further community feedback and presentation of new exoMIP ideas., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

Multi-planet systems orbiting M dwarfs provide valuable tests of theories of small planet formation and evolution. K2-3 is an early M dwarf hosting three small exoplanets (1.5-2.0 Earth radii) at distances of 0.07-0.20 AU. We measure the high-energy spectrum of K2-3 with HST/COS and XMM-Newton, and use empirically-driven estimates of Ly-alpha and extreme ultraviolet flux. We use EXOFASTv2 to jointly fit radial velocity, transit, and SED data. This constrains the K2-3 planet radii to 4% uncertainty and the masses of K2-3b and c to 13% and 30%, respectively; K2-3d is not detected in RV measurements. K2-3b and c are consistent with rocky cores surrounded by solar composition envelopes (mass fractions of 0.36% and 0.07%), H2O envelopes (55% and 16%), or a mixture of both. However, based on the high-energy output and estimated age of K2-3, it is unlikely that K2-3b and c retain solar composition atmospheres. We pass the planet parameters and high-energy stellar spectrum to atmospheric models. Dialing the high-energy spectrum up and down by a factor of 10 produces significant changes in trace molecule abundances, but not at a level detectable with transmission spectroscopy. Though the K2-3 planets span the small planet radius valley, the observed system architecture cannot be readily explained by photoevaporation or core-powered mass loss. We instead propose 1) the K2-3 planets are all volatile-rich, with K2-3d having a lower density than typical of super-Earths, and/or 2) the K2-3 planet architecture results from more stochastic processes such as planet formation, planet migration, and impact erosion., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure, published in AJ, HLSPs at https://archive.stsci.edu/hlsp/mstarpanspec

We validate the planetary nature of an ultra-short period planet orbiting the M dwarf KOI-4777. We use a combination of space-based photometry from Kepler, high-precision, near-infrared Doppler spectroscopy from the Habitable-zone Planet Finder, and adaptive optics imaging to characterize this system. KOI-4777.01 is a Mars-sized exoplanet ($\mathrm{R}_{p}=0.51 \pm 0.03R_{\oplus}$) orbiting the host star every 0.412-days ($\sim9.9$-hours). This is the smallest validated ultra-short period planet known and we see no evidence for additional massive companions using our HPF RVs. We constrain the upper $3\sigma$ mass to $M_{p}<0.34~\mathrm{M_\oplus}$ by assuming the planet is less dense than iron. TOI-1266c is a recently discovered super-Venus in the radius valley orbiting an early M dwarf. However, its notional bulk density ($\sim$2.2 g cm$^{-3}$) is consistent with a large volatile fraction, suggesting that it might have volatile reservoirs that have survived billions of years at more than twice the Earth's insolation. On the other hand, the upper mass limit paints a picture of a cool super Mercury dominated by >50\% iron core ($\sim$9.2 g cm$^{-3}$) that has tiptoed up to the collisional stripping limit and into the radius gap. Here, we examine several hypothetical states for TOI-1266c using a combination of new and updated open-source atmospheric escape, radiative-convective, and photochemical models. We find that water-rich atmospheres with trace amounts of H$_{2}$ and CO$_{2}$ are potentially detectable (SNR $>\sim 5$) in less than 20 hours of JWST observing time. We also find that water vapor spectral features are not substantially impacted by the presence of high-altitude water or ice clouds due the presence of a significant amount of water above the cloud-deck, although further work with self-consistent cloud models is needed. Regardless of its mass, however, TOI-1266c represents a unique proving ground for several hypotheses related to the evolution of sub-Neptunes and Venus-like worlds, particularly those near the radius valley., Comment: 40 pages (18 pages in the main text), 15 figures (10 figures in the main text), 2 appendices. The lunar history of water deposition, loss, and transport post-accretion has become an important consideration in relation to the possibility of a human outpost on the Moon. Very recent work has shown that a secondary primordial atmosphere of up to 10 mb could have been emplaced ~3.5 billion years ago due to volcanic outgassing from the maria. Using a zero dimensional chemistry model we demonstrate the temperature dependence of the resulting major atmospheric components (CO or CO$_2$). We use a three dimensional general circulation model to test the viability of such an atmosphere and derive its climatological characteristics. Based on these results we then conjecture on its capability to transport volatiles outgassed from the maria to the permanently shadowed regions at the poles. Our preliminary results demonstrate that atmospheres as low as 1 mb are viable and that permanent cold trapping of volatiles is only possible at the poles., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures. In the search for life on Earth-like planets around other stars, the first (and likely only) information will come from the spectroscopic characterization of the planet's atmosphere. Of the countless number of chemical species terrestrial life produces, only a few have the distinct spectral features and the necessary atmospheric abundance to be detectable. The easiest of these species to observe in Earth's atmosphere is O$_{2}$ (and its photochemical byproduct, O$_{3}$). But O$_{2}$ can also be produced abiotically by photolysis of CO$_{2}$, followed by recombination of O atoms with each other. CO is produced in stoichiometric proportions. Whether O$_{2}$ and CO can accumulate to appreciable concentrations depends on the ratio of far-UV to near-UV radiation coming from the planet's parent star and on what happens to these gases when they dissolve in a planet's oceans. Using a one-dimensional photochemical model, we demonstrate that O$_{2}$ derived from CO$_{2}$ photolysis should not accumulate to measurable concentrations on planets around F- and G-type stars. K-star, and especially M-star planets, however, may build up O$_{2}$ because of the low near-UV flux from their parent stars, in agreement with some previous studies. On such planets, a 'false positive' for life is possible if recombination of dissolved CO and O$_{2}$ in the oceans is slow and if other O$_{2}$ sinks (e.g., reduced volcanic gases or dissolved ferrous iron) are small. O$_{3}$, on the other hand, could be detectable at UV wavelengths ($\lambda$ < 300 nm) for a much broader range of boundary conditions and stellar types., Comment: 20 pages text, 9 figures

Over the last few years, a number of authors have suggested that, under certain circumstances, molecular oxygen (O2) or ozone (O3) generated by abiotic processes may accumulate to detectable concentrations in a habitable terrestrial planet's atmosphere, producing so-called "false positives" for life. But the models have occasionally disagreed with each other, with some predicting false positives, and some not, for the same apparent set of circumstances. We show here that photochemical false positives derive either from inconsistencies in the treatment of atmospheric and global redox balance or from the treatment (or lack thereof) of lightning. For habitable terrestrial planets with even trace amounts of atmospheric N2, NO produced by lightning catalyzes the recombination of CO and O derived from CO2 photolysis and should be sufficient to eliminate all reported false positives. Molecular oxygen thus remains a useful biosignature gas for Earth-like extrasolar planets, provided that the planet resides within the conventional liquid water habitable zone and has not experienced distinctly non-Earth- like, irrecoverable water loss.

The anomalous abundances of sulfur isotopes in ancient sediments provide the strongest evidence for an anoxic atmosphere prior to ∼2.45 Ga, but the mechanism for producing this 'mass-independent' fractionation pattern remains in question. The prevailing hypothesis has been that it is created by differences in the UV photolysis rates of different SO2 isotopologues. We investigate here a recently proposed additional source of fractionation during gas-phase formation of elemental sulfur (S4 and S8). Because two minor S isotopes rarely occur in the same chain, the longer S4 and S8 chains should be strongly, and roughly equally, depleted in all minor isotopes. This gives rise to negative ∆(sup 33) S values and positive ∆(sub 36) S values in elemental sulfur-just the opposite of (and much larger than) what is predicted from SO2 photolysis itself. Back-reactions during chain formation, specifically photolysis of S2 and S3, pass sulfur having the opposite fractionation back to atomic S, and thence to other sulfur species, causing H2S, SO2, sulfate, and short-chain elemental sulfur to have positive ∆(sup 33) S and negative ∆(sup 36) S. Positive ∆(sup 33) S values in elemental sulfur produced in laboratory SO2 photolysis experiments could be caused by the initial fractionation during photolysis, combined with rapid condensation of short-chain sulfur species on the walls of the reaction chamber, along with a scarcity of back-reactions. The simulated fractionations produced by the chain formation mechanism do not directly match fractionations from the rock record. The mismatch might be explained if the isotopic signals leaving the atmosphere were significantly modulated by life, by uncertainties in the rates of reactions of both major and minor isotopic sulfur species, or by the relatively large potential range of atmospheric parameters. Further work is needed to better constrain these uncertainties, but this novel mechanism suggests new avenues to explore in our search for a explanation for the S-MIF record.
