Objective To observe the efficacy of unblocking and regulating the Belt Vessel acupuncture method for patients with abdominal obesity in Germany and its influence on the body fat parameters and glycolipids metabolism. Methods A total of 82 cases of abdominal obesity in Germany were selected. There were two dropout cases in the treatment process. All of the patients received acupuncture at Daimai (GB26), Daheng (SP15), Tianshu (ST25), Zhongwan (CV12), Shuidao (ST28), Waiguan (TE5), and Zulinqi (GB41). The patients received acupuncture therapy once every 2–3 d, 3 times a week. The treatment duration lasted 4 weeks. Before and after treatment, the body mass (BM), waist circumference (WC), abdominal circumference (AC), hip circumference (HC), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and fasting blood glucose (GLU) were measured respectively, and the body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and body fat rate (BFR) were calculated. Results After treatment, the total effective rate was 72.5%; the levels of BM, WC, AC, HC, BMI, WHR, WHtR, BFR, TC, LDL-C, and GLU declined significantly compared with those before treatment (PP>0.05). Conclusion The unblocking and regulating the Belt Vessel acupuncture method can significantly reduce body fat parameters such as BM, AC, and BFR, and correct the disorders of glucose and lipid metabolism in patients with abdominal obesity in Germany.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease triggered by a cascading inflammatory response. Sigesbeckia Herba (SH) has long been utilized as a traditional remedy to alleviate symptoms associated with rheumatism. Our previous study found that leocarpinolide B (LB), a sesquiterpene lactone isolated from the whole plant of SH, possesses potent a anti-inflammatory effect on macrophages. This study was designed to evaluate the therapeutic effects of LB on RA, and further investigate the underlying mechanisms. In collagen type II-induced arthritic mice, LB was demonstrated to decrease the production of autoimmune antibodies in serum and inflammatory cytokines in the joint muscles and recover the decreased regulatory T lymphocytes in spleen. Moreover, LB significantly suppressed the inflammatory infiltration, formation of pannus and bone erosion in the paw joints. In vitro testing showed that LB inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion, and secretion of inflammatory cytokines in IL-1β-induced human synovial SW982 cells. Network pharmacology and molecular docking suggested NF-κB p65 could be the potential target of LB on RA treatment, subsequent experimental investigation confirmed that LB directly interacted with NF-κB p65 and reduced the DNA binding activity of NF-κB in synovial cells. In conclusion, LB significantly attenuated the collagen type II-induced arthritis, which was at least involved in the inhibition of DNA binding activity of NF-κB through a direct binding to NF-κB p65. These findings suggest that LB could be a valuable lead compound for developing anti-RA drugs.

Wearing masks is an effective and simple method to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in public places, such as train stations, classrooms, and streets. It is of positive significance to urge people to wear masks with computer vision technology. However, the existing detection methods are mainly for simple scenes, and facial missing detection is prone to occur in dense crowds with different scales and occlusions. Moreover, the data obtained by surveillance cameras in public places are difficult to be collected for centralized training, due to the privacy of individuals. In order to solve these problems, a cascaded network is proposed: the first level is the Dilation RetinaNet Face Location (DRFL) Network, which contains Enhanced Receptive Field Context (ERFC) module with the dilation convolution, aiming to reduce network parameters and locate faces of different scales. In order to adapt to embedded camera devices, the second level is the SRNet20 network, which is created by Neural Architecture Search (NAS). Due to privacy protection, it is difficult for surveillance video to share in practice, so our SRNet20 network is trained in federated learning. Meanwhile, we have made a masked face dataset containing about 20,000 images. Finally, the experiments highlight that the detection mAP of the face location is 90.6% on the Wider Face dataset, and the classification mAP of the masked face classification is 98.5% on the dataset we made, which means our cascaded network can detect masked faces in dense crowd scenes well.

Through electrochemical and surface analysis, the composition, semi-conductive property and electrochemical performance of the passive film formed on selective laser melting stainless steel 316L (SLM SS316L) and wrought SS316L in the deep sea environment were analyzed, respectively. Results indicated that the corrosion resistance of SS316L can be enhanced by the SLM process, which is attributed to the greatly smaller grain size and higher density of grain boundaries. Grain boundary, i.e. metallurgical defects, enhances the dissolution of SS316L and releases a large quantity of Cr3+ ions at the interface. Then Cr(OH)3 precipitated and dehydrated to produce much more stable oxides Cr2O3. As a result, a thin and compact passive film formed on the SLM SS316L, which thun suppressed localized corrosion and resulted in high corrosion resistance.

Neuroinflammation is closely related to the pathogenesis of perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs), which is characterized by the activation of microglia, inflammatory pathways and the release of inflammatory mediators. Sigesbeckia orientalis L. (SO) is a traditional Chinese medicine which demonstrates anti-inflammatory activities in different models. In this study, we aim to isolate the active fraction from the extract of SO with higher anti-inflammatory potential and confirm if the selected fraction exerts neuroprotection against the development of PND in an animal model. Moreover, the components in the selected fraction would be determined by UPLC-PDA analysis. Three fractions were prepared by column chromatography packed with three different macroporous resins. Anti-inflammatory activities of prepared fractions were accessed in microglial BV2 cultures by nitric oxide release, gene expression of inflammatory cytokines and activation of inflammatory JNK and NF-kB pathway molecules. Our results demonstrated that the fraction prepared from D101 macroporous resin (D101 fraction) exhibited a more potent anti-neuroinflammatory effect. The neuroprotective effect of D101 fraction was further examined in postoperative mice. Our results showed that surgery-induced cognitive dysfunction was attenuated by the D101 fraction treatment. This fraction also reduced microglial activation, inflammatory cytokines and inhibiting JNK and NF-kB pathway molecules in the hippocampus. In addition, surgery induced dendritic spine loss while D101 fraction ameliorated the spine loss in the hippocampus. For safety concerns, anti-thrombotic effect was examined by tail bleeding assay and no significant change of the bleeding pattern was found. UPLC-PDA analysis indicated that flavonoids (rutin, isochlorogenic acid A, isochlorogenic acid C) and terpenoid (darutoside) were the most important components in the D101 fraction. Our results support a therapeutic, as well as the translational potential for D101 fraction in ameliorating postoperative neuroinflammation and subsequent PND in the clinical setting without increasing bleeding tendencies.

PurposeThe regulations for qualitative genetically modified (GM) food labeling do not effectively eliminate the information asymmetries pertaining to the consumption of GM products. China's GM food labeling law requires the presentation of certain categories of GM products on GMO labels on packages. Such information is invaluable for understanding whether the disclosure of more information on GM foods can help alleviate information asymmetry while reducing consumer fear and risk perceptions of GM foods, and thus cause changes in their behaviors. The purpose of this paper is to explore the heterogeneity of consumer preferences for enhanced GM food labeling, how consumer preferences are influenced by labeling information, and how these preferences vary in different consumers.Design/methodology/approachBoth descriptive statistics and econometric techniques, including the multivariate ordered Probit model, were applied to a sample of 566 urban consumers in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. All respondents were divided into two groups: people who would definitely not buy GM foods before selecting enhanced labeling information (“consumer group 1”, sample size 282) and people who would definitely not object to buying GM foods before selecting enhanced labeling information (“consumer group 2”, sample size 274).FindingsThe findings suggest that urban consumers have a preference for different types of enhanced labeling information about GM foods, that such a preference significantly influences their willingness to pay for GM foods, that there exists a large difference in the preferences of different consumer groups, and that enhanced GM food labeling information has a greater impact on those consumers who would not accept GM foods.Originality/valueThis research identifies the GM information disclosures that most affect consumer preferences and how these preferences vary across different segments of consumers, which is a current gap in the literature. The study has demonstrated that enhanced labels of GM foods with diverse information would not alter a consumer's WTP for GM foods who does not perceive the value of information from the enhanced labels, but change positively consumers with uncertainty willingness to pay before disclosure.

Breast cancer is the second most common types of cancer worldwide. Molecular strategies have developed rapidly; however, novel treatments strategies with high efficacy and lower toxicity are still urgently demanded. Notably, biological networks estimated from microarray data and functional activity network analysis could be utilized to identify and validate potential targets. In this study, two microarray data (GSE13477, GSE31192) were firstly selected, and analyzed by multi-functional activity network analysis to generate the core protein-protein-interaction (PPI) network. Several potential targets were subsequently identified and c-Met and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) were manually chosen as the key targets in breast cancer. Furthermore, virtual screening and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were utilized to recognize novel c-Met/PARP-1 inhibitors in Specs products database. Three small molecules, namely, ZINC19909930, ZINC20032678 and ZINC13562414 were selected. Additionally, these compounds were synthesized, and two breast cancer cell lines, MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells were used to validate our bioinformatic findings in vitro. MTT assay and Hoechst staining showed that ZINC20032678 significantly induced breast cancer cell death, which was mediated through apoptosis by flow cytometry. Furthermore, ZINC20032678 was shown to target the active sites of the both targets and recruitment of downstream apoptotic signaling pathways, eventually inducing breast cancer cell apoptosis. Collectively, our findings not only offer systems biology approaches based drug target identification, but also provide the new clues for developing novel inhibitors for future breast cancer research.

Implementing small interfering RNA (siRNA) is a promising therapy because it silences disease-related genes theoretically. However, the efficient delivery of siRNA is challenging, which limits its therapeutic applications. Various pharmaceutical delivery systems containing key technologies have been developed and patented, which are of great concern to developers in the field. Despite numerous studies devoted to siRNA-delivery technologies, few researchers have systematically examined relevant patents. Patents, as bridges connecting academic progress with applicable innovation, encapsulate cumulative technological innovations and provide valuable information for academic research and commercial development. This study aims to analyze advances in therapeutic siRNA delivery technology from a patent perspective. A total of 11,509 patent documents from 3,309 patent families were collected, classified into 10 technological categories, and comprehensively analyzed. An overall patent landscape of siRNA delivery was presented from the temporal, spatial, organizational, and technological dimensions. This work is expected to help researchers and developers in the field of siRNA delivery form a basis for decision-making by combining our findings with supplementary data.

Agent-based models are important tools for simulating farmers’ behaviour in response to changing environmental, economic or institutional conditions and policies. This article introduces an agent-based modelling approach that combines behavioural factors with standard bio-economic modelling of agricultural production. More specifically, our framework integrates the cumulative prospect theory and social interactions with constrained optimisation decisions in agricultural production. We apply our modelling approach to an exemplary bio-economic model on the assessment of weed control decisions. Results show the effects of heterogeneous farm decision-making and social networks on mechanical weed control and herbicide use. This framework provides a generic and conceptually sound approach to improve the scope for representing farmers’ decision-making and allows the simulation of their decisions and recent advances in behavioural economics to be aligned with existing bio-economic models of agricultural systems., Journal of Agricultural Economics, 73 (1), ISSN:0021-857X, ISSN:1477-9552

With the COVID-19 pandemic, better understanding of the co-evolution of information and epidemic diffusion networks is important for pandemic-related policies. Using the microscopic Markov chain method, this study proposed an aware-susceptible-infected model (ASI) to explore the effect of information literacy on the spreading process in such multiplex networks. We first introduced a parameter that adjusts the self-protection related execution ability of aware individuals in order to emphasis the importance of protective behaviors compared to awareness in decreasing the infection probability. The model also captures individuals' heterogeneity in their information literacy. Simulation experiments found that the high information-literate individuals are more sensitive to information adoption. In addition, epidemic information can help to suppress the epidemic diffusion only when individuals' abilities of transforming awareness into actual protective behaviors attain a threshold. In communities dominated by highly literate individuals, a larger information literacy gap can improve awareness acquisition and thus help to suppress the epidemic among the whole group. By contrast, in communities dominated by low information-literate individuals, a smaller information literacy gap can better prevent the epidemic diffusion. This study contributes to the literature by revealing the importance of individuals' heterogeneity of information literacy on epidemic spreading in different communities and has implications for how to inform people when a new epidemic disease emerges.

Achieving waste classification and environmental protection awareness assists in enhancing the rural ecological environment, improves the quality of the rural residents&rsquo, life, and augments the rate of reusing resources within the rural setups. In order to study the factors influencing rural waste classification and environmental protection awareness, we conducted a project among rural residents of Jiangsu, China. We used both the logistic regression model and the ordinary least squares model to achieve the goals of this paper. Similarly, we found that the households&rsquo, level of education influenced the rural residents&rsquo, decision to classify waste and to protect the environment regarding whether a household consists of a village cadre, the availability of public waste collection facilities, the distance between households and the waste collection points, whether the waste is picked, assorted, and collected locally, and the cost of waste disposal. In light of all these factors, we recommended that the authorities should increase the rural residents&rsquo, waste classification and environmental protection awareness. Also, through the local government, the national government should strengthen and sustain rural waste disposal funds. Finally, there should be stringent laws and regulations outlining the role of the rural residents regarding waste classification and environmental protection awareness.

This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of self-designed Ningxin Anshen (NXAS) Formula for post-ischemic stroke insomnia of blood-deficient and liver-heat syndrome. Ninety patients were randomized into NXAS group, Placebo group and Zopiclone group. Patients in the NXAS group, Placebo group and Zopiclone group were treated with Ningxin Anshen Formula, placebo and zopiclone for 4 weeks, respectively. The scores of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Syndromes of self-designed scale and the number of adverse events (AEs) were determined. Results showed that the overall effective rate in the NXAS group and Placebo group was 76.67 and 30.00%, respectively, showing significant difference (P < 0.01). There was no marked difference between Zopiclone group (80.00%) and NXAS group. In both NXAS group and Zopiclone group, the scores of PSQI, ISI, and TCM Syndromes of self-designed scale after 4-week treatment were significantly different from those before treatment (P < 0.01). After 4-week treatment, the scores of PSQI, ISI, and TCM Syndromes of self-designed score were comparable between NXAS group and Zopiclone group (P > 0.05). Only one patient in the NXAS group developed gastrointestinal discomfort, which resolved without treatment discontinuation. In conclusion, self-designed NXAS Formula is effective and safe and has little adverse effect in treating post-stroke insomnia of blood-deficient and liver-heat syndrome.

This work investigates the appointed-finite-time trajectory tracking control problem for quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicles subject to external disturbances. More specifically, two nonsingular terminal sliding mode manifolds are first designed so that the singularity problem is settled. Furthermore, the appointed-finite-time stability of the proposed manifolds is proved by rigorous Lyapunov theory. Then, two novel sliding mode based appointed-finite-time controllers are developed to realize the trajectory tracking objective. The undesired chattering is alleviated by discontinuous control structure. Finally, numerical simulation results are presented to illustrate that the quadrotor can successfully accomplish the tracking task by utilizing the proposed controllers.

Excessive proliferation and inflammation of synovial fibroblasts accelerate and decorate the pathological process of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Sigesbeckia orientalis L. (SO) is one of the main plant sources for Sigesbeckiae Herba (SH) which has been used traditionally in treating various forms of arthritis and rheumatic pain. However, the anti-arthritic mechanisms of SO are still not clearly understood. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effects and the underlying mechanisms of SO against collagen type II (C II)-induced RA in rats as well as the interleukin (IL)-1β–induced human synovial SW982 and MH7A cells. For the in vivo studies, thirty-six Wistar male rats were randomly arranged to six groups based on the body weight, and then C II-induced to RA model for 15 days, followed by treatment with the 50% ethanolic extract of SO (SOE, 0.16, 0.78, and 1.56 g/kg) for 35 days. The results suggested that SOE significantly inhibited the formation of pannus (synovial hyperplasia to the articular cavity) and attenuated the cartilage damaging and bone erosion in the CIA-induced rats’ hind paw joints. Moreover, SOE decreased the production of C-reactive protein (CRP) in the serum and the expression of IL-6 and IL-1β in the joint muscles, as well as recovered the decreased regulatory T lymphocytes. The results obtained from the in vitro studies showed that SOE (50, 100, and 200 µg/ml) not only inhibited the proliferation, migration, and invasion of human synovial SW982 cells but also decreased the IL-1β–induced expression of IL-6 and IL-8 both in SW982 and MH7A cells. Besides, SOE reduced the expression of COX-2, NLRP3, and MMP9, and increased the expression of MMP2 in the IL-1β–induced SW982 cells. Furthermore, SOE blocked the activation of NF-κB and reduced the phosphorylation of MAPKs and the expression of AP-1. In conclusion, SOE attenuated the C II-induced RA through inhibiting of MAPKs/NF-κB/AP-1–mediated synovial hyperplasia and inflammation.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to summarize the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and the incidence of lung cancer using a meta-analysis of cohort studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS We systematically searched PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library to identify potential cohort studies. Relative risk (RR) was used to calculate the association between DM and the risk of lung cancer. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis and test for publication bias were performed. Twenty cohort studies were selected. RESULTS The participants with DM showed little or no significant effect on the risk of lung cancer (RR: 1.10; 95% CI: 0.99-1.23; P = .087). DM was not associated with the risk of lung cancer in men (RR: 1.11; 95%CI: 0.92-1.35; P = .270), but a significant association was observed in women (RR: 1.18; 95%CI: 1.10-1.28; P

Background Sigesbeckia glabrescens Makino (SG) has been traditionally used for rheumatism and joint protection. However, the anti-arthritic effects and underling mechanisms of SG have not been demonstrated. In this study, we investigated the anti-arthritic effects and mechanisms of SG extract (SGE) on collagen-induced arthritic rats and interleukin (IL)-1β-stimulated human synovial SW982 cells. Methods Rats were induced to arthritis by collagen for 15 days and then received SGE treatment for 35 days. The body weight and arthritis severity score of the rats were monitored weekly. At the end of the experiment, the radiographic and histological changes of rats’ hind paw were obtained; the serum C-reactive protein was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); the expression levels of interleukin (IL)- 1β, IL6 and IL-10 in the joint muscles were determined by ELISA and immunohistochemical staining; and the level of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the spleen was detected using flow cytometry. In addition, 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and scratch wound healing assay were used to evaluate the proliferation of SW982 synovial cells. ELISA, western blot and immunofluorescence staining were used to investigate the anti-inflammatory mechanisms of SGE on IL-1β-induced SW982 cells and joint muscles of CIA rats. Results SGE attenuated the collagen-induced hind paw swelling, cartilage damage and bone erosion. SGE inhibited the synovial hyperplasia to the articular cavity in the toe joint and ankle. Moreover, SGE decreased the production of C-reactive protein in serum and the expression of IL-6, IL-1β, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and phosphorylation of NF-κB p65 in the joint muscles. SGE also recovered the decreased Tregs. Results from the in vitro experiments showed that SGE not only inhibited the proliferation and migration of human synovial cell but also inhibited the IL-1β-induced expression of IL-6 and IL-8. Similarly, SGE inhibited the activation of NF-κB and the expression of COX-2. Conclusions SGE attenuated the collagen-induced arthritis through inhibiting the synovial hyperplasia and inflammation.

Background Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a persistent chronic excessive anxiety that is hard to control. Our previous study indicated that self-designed Ningxin Anshen Formula (NXAS) was effective to treat mild to moderate GAD patients. This study is a randomized controlled clinical trial and aimed to investigate the imapct of self-designed NXAS on the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in patients with mild to moderate GAD and explore the potential mechanisms. Methods A total of 61 patients diagnosed with mild to moderate GAD were recruited and divided into two groups randomly: NXAS group (n=31) and placebo group (n=30). Before and after treatment, the rsFC was examined by resting-state functional MRI (rs-fMRI), the anxiety was assessed with HAMA, and the independent component analysis (ICA) was used to analyze the resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC). The correlation between HAMA score and abnormal rsFC was further evaluated. Results The default mode network (DMN) showed evident rsFC interaction in the PCUN in both groups before and after therapy. The salience network (SN) showed obvious rsFC interaction in the bilateral gyrus frontalis inferiors and bilateral gyri temporalis superiors before and after therapy. In the NXAS group, the rsFC interction reduced significantly in the left gyrus frontalis inferior, but remained unchanged in the right gyrus frontalis inferior and bilateral gyri temporalis superiors after therapy. In the control group, the rsFC interaction increased dramatically after treatment. In addition, the abnormal rsFC had no relationship with HAMA score. Conclusions The self-designed NXAS can increase the rsFC in the PUCN on DMN and reduce rsFC in the orbIFG.L on SN to exert anti-anxiety effect.

This study aimed to explore the role of the default mode network (DMN) and salience network (SN) in the assessment of pathophysiology of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) through analyzing the characteristics of internal function connectivity (FC) and to investigate the relationship of FC with Hamilton anxiety (HAMA) scale scores in untreated GAD patients during a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Rs-fMRI and HAMA scale scoring were performed in 51 GAD patients (31 GAD patients with liver stagnation transforming into fire type and 20 GAD patients with stagnation of liver-Qi syndrome type) and 20 healthy controls. Spearman correlation analysis was performed to assess the association between HAMA scores and abnormal brain FC. Compared with healthy controls, the FC of the right medial prefrontal gyrus of the DMN and the right superior temporal gyrus of the SN increased significantly in the GAD patients (P<0.001). However, the FC of the left middle frontal gyrus and bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus of the SN reduced significantly in the GAD patients with stagnation of liver-Qi syndrome type as compared with healthy controls and GAD patients with liver stagnation transforming into fire type (P<0.001). There was no relationship between abnormal brain FC and HAMA scores. In conclusion, the FC of the DMN and SN may be abnormal in the GAD patients at the resting state. The aberrant FC of some crucial brain regions of these networks may contribute to the pathophysiology of GAD.

A new model is describing complex dissolution-ionization-diffusion-deposition (DIDD) process in metal/solution interface. Taking CO2 corrosion of steel as an example for modeling verification, helping to better understand the non-Arrhenius corrosion behavior of 20 steel, especially the role of alloying element Cr on the corrosion resistance. The calculated results have a good agreement with morphology and weight loss. Moreover, a significant contribution of this study is to find a bridge between the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrochemical corrosion, providing a promising tool to develop a deterministic method for corrosion prediction and formulate a set of principles for designing new alloys.

Source rocks in lacustrine rifting basins have great heterogeneity, which leads to imprecise assessments of hydrocarbon resources. Previous studies evaluated the source rocks of different sedimentary environments in lacustrine basins or depressions using the same lower limit of effective source rocks (i.e., the minimum total organic carbon (TOC) at which the source rocks are capable of expelling hydrocarbons). In this study, the source rock samples were selected from five formations in the Dongpu Depression for organic geochemical experiments and quantitative simulations of hydrocarbon expulsion. According to salinity differences, every formation was divided into a saline area, transition area and freshwater area. The results show that the maximum thickness of source rocks developed in the saline and transition areas is 700 m. Additionally, source rocks with a higher TOC and oil-prone organic matter types (II1 and II2) also develop in the saline and transition areas, and most have entered the mature stage. The TOC values corresponding to the lower limit of effective source rocks in the saline, transition, and freshwater areas are 0.3%, 0.4% and 0.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the hydrocarbon expulsion ratio (amount of hydrocarbon discharged per unit of TOC from the source rocks) for the freshwater area is 253.1 mg/g, while the ratios in the saline and transition areas are relatively higher at 439.4 mg/g and 369.3 mg/g, respectively. The hydrocarbon expulsion rate (change in the expulsion ratio per unit thermal evolution degree) and hydrocarbon expulsion efficiency (ratio of cumulative hydrocarbon expulsion amount to generation amount) in the saline, transition and freshwater areas present maxima when the Ro (vitrinite reflectance) values are 0.95%, 0.85% and 0.82%, respectively. The hydrocarbon expulsion quantities in the saline, transition and freshwater areas account for 24%, 49% and 27% of the total, respectively. Therefore, the main hydrocarbon expulsion area is the transition area of the Dongpu Depression associated with the thickest source rocks. Es3M and Es3L source rocks in the transition area with high organic matter abundant and type II kerogen are more promising than the other formations. This study is the first to report on effective source rocks in different sedimentary environments in lacustrine basins and can provide guidance for future exploration in the Dongpu Depression and a reference for future research on source rocks in other lacustrine basins.

Characteristics such as ‘acquaintance society’ and ‘differential mode of association’ have been widely acknowledged as unique features of Chinese rural societies. However, quantitative evidence of these characteristics is not found in the literature. Applying methods in social network analysis, this paper presents a quantitative study of the social structure of Chinese villages. We measure various network statistics and topological properties of these villages using detailed data on major social relationships (including kinship, house neighbourhood, land plot neighbourhood and political relationships) in 10 rural villages located in central China. In this way, we provide a quantitative description of the structural characteristics of Chinese villages and quantitative evidence for some widely acknowledged features. Our findings are threefold: (1) the networks of Chinese villages are densely connected and highly decentralised; (2) the networks are typical small-world networks, referred to in network research as ‘acquaintance societies’; (3) individuals form neighbourhood ties according to the closeness of existing kinship ties, which corroborates the feature of ‘differential mode of association’.

Ethnopharmacological relevance Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a respiratory inflammatory disease. Unlike asthma, COPD is insensitive to glucocorticoid treatment; thus, it is of great importance to find alternative medications, including Chinese medicine, to suppress inflammation. Bu-Shen-Fang-Chuan formula (BSFCF) is commonly used for the treatment of COPD in China. However, the mechanisms of BSFCF in COPD treatment are still unclear. Aim of the study To verify the anti-inflammatory efficacy of BSFCF in COPD and to explore the possible mechanisms underlying its anti-inflammatory efficacy based on the phosphatidylinositol 3 kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (Akt)-Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and Nuclear factor (NF)-κB signalling pathways. Materials and methods A rat model of COPD was established by chronic exposure to cigarette smoke (CS) for 6 months. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and blood were obtained to detect inflammatory cytokines. Lung samples were harvested, and part of each sample was fixed for subsequent H&E staining and immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis. The remaining lung tissues were used for RNA sequencing analysis and western blotting. Results BSFCF significantly reduced inflammatory infiltration in the lungs of CS-exposed rats and decreased the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6 in both the BALF and serum. Additionally, BSFCF evidently attenuated NF-κB activation and downregulation of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) caused by CS. Furthermore, BSFCF increased the activation of PI3K/Akt-Nrf2 signalling in response to CS. Conclusions BSFCF attenuated CS-induced inflammation in COPD, which was partially achieved through the PI3K/Akt-Nrf2 and NF-κB signalling pathways.

Bayesian optimization (BO) is a popular approach for expensive black-box optimization, with applications including parameter tuning, experimental design, and robotics. BO usually models the objective function by a Gaussian process (GP), and iteratively samples the next data point by maximizing an acquisition function. In this paper, we propose a new general framework for BO by generating pseudo-points (i.e., data points whose objective values are not evaluated) to improve the GP model. With the classic acquisition function, i.e., upper confidence bound (UCB), we prove that the cumulative regret can be generally upper bounded. Experiments using UCB and other acquisition functions, i.e., probability of improvement (PI) and expectation of improvement (EI), on synthetic as well as real-world problems clearly show the advantage of generating pseudo-points.
