Human activity has led to microplastic contamination throughout the marine environment. As a result of widespread contamination, microplastics are ingested by many species of wildlife, including fish, cephalopods, and shellfish. Taiwan is surrounded by oceans that offer a rich range of seafood. Taiwanese residents can easily acquire seafood as a source of dietary protein. A recent research project by Greenpeace shows that the Taiwanese eat 16,000 microplastic particles per year. There is concern regarding microplastic physical and chemical toxicity, which poses potential health risks to the local community via food chains. Thus, monitoring microplastic contamination in seafood is imperative to provide helpful information for the government and local communities. Efforts should be taken to reduce microplastic pollution at the source to minimize potential effects on ecological and health safety. This review article emphasizes the urgent need for further research on microplastic pollution in Taiwan, highlights the potential challenges to mitigate this emerging environmental threat, and analyzes food safety hazards as well as microplastic contamination in seafood. Public accusations of misconduct by environmental organizations exert reputational pressure on firms. The targeted firms are thus faced with the decision of responding accommodatively or defensively. Situational crisis communication theory (SCCT) holds that such accusations require an accommodative response to reduce the reputational threat. However, defensive response behavior is frequently observed, and insights from the sociocognitive perspective explain that corporate conceptualizations of the contested practice (and hence threat) shape targets' responses. We integrate and extend prior research by (1) explicating the need for attention to the condition of contested practice complexity and (2) theoretically developing and empirically testing (using a sample of palm oil producers accused of illegal deforestation by Greenpeace) the impact of targeted firms' engagement in environmental alliances and past environmental misconduct experience, two key manifestation variables of practice meaningfulness. Overall, in line with calls for a more comprehensive understanding, we provide new insights into the question of when and why targeted firms respond accommodatively or defensively to environmental organizations' demands that they change their practices. This article explores whether ecofeminist thought is part of the discourse of environmental associations. For this purpose, starting from the characterization of the corresponding epistemologies, the differences between the environmental worldviews in which the environmental movements are aligned are established at a theoretical level. The case studies in which the feminist discursive content is analyzed involve three national organizations based in Seville: SEObirdlife, Greenpeace and Ecologistas en Acción. The methodology is based on the comparative study of documents and press releases in addition to indepth interviews with spokespersons of the respective local groups. The results show that the SEObirdlife association, from a conservationist position, has no links with ecofeminism; Greenpeace, from a techno-efficient environmentalist orientation, offers a purely technical interpretation of the gender perspective; and Ecologistas en Acción, representing social environmentalism, demonstrates an incipient approach to ecofeminism. This article investigates Greenpeace's use of science in 'environmental representation' in news articles concerning genetically modified food, and how commenters respond in the associated below the line comments. This article provides an answer through a qualitative data analysis using a discourse analysis of data from 5 UK news organisations, commencing 1 January 2015 until 31 December 2015. The findings reveal the importance of science and scientific evidence in claims-making and 'environmental representation' by Greenpeace in relation to genetically modified foods in news articles. However, below the line commenters reject the idea of scientific evidence being used by Greenpeace. Instead, these commenters claim Greenpeace oppose scientific developments. The article concludes by discussing how this study adds to the understanding of claims-making and 'environmental representation' by Greenpeace with respect to genetically modified foods in news articles, and how the below the line commenters challenge the legitimacy of Greenpeace as an 'environmental representative'. The political purpose doctrine, a key part of the charity law landscape for many common law jurisdictions, has been subject to much judicial and academic criticism over the years. Its continued influence on the charity sector in relation to whether or not charities can operate effectively, or indeed, whether they may lose their registered status, gives rise still to such criticisms. It is against this backdrop that this article critically assesses the doctrine in light of newly-emerging decisions from the New Zealand courts that have fundamentally changed the charity law landscape from a national perspective, and considers some of the issues associated with this newly-evolved doctrine. Thus, what can be said is that New Zealand charity law jurisprudence is evolving and this article provides some useful insights in to contemporary charity law issues predominantly through the New Zealand lens as but one legal approach, and also compares some of these issues against two international perspectives. Firms are increasingly held accountable for their suppliers' environmental misconduct and often face significant stakeholder pressure to respond or even end their affiliations with misbehaving suppliers. Despite the importance of the subject, we know little about antecedents to supplier exclusion. In this article, we build on the assumption of stakeholder expectations being a core mechanism—and adopt an expectancy-violation theory lens. Drawing also on complementary insights into signaling theory, we argue that the severity of the misconduct affects the decision to cut ties. Furthermore, we argue that the engagement in environmental partnerships of client firms as well as suppliers moderates this relationship. To test our hypotheses, we use a unique sample of 434 client firm–supplier dyads, including 27 focal firms pressured by Greenpeace to remove "dirty" palm oil suppliers, accused of illegal deforestation. The study's findings provide contributions to several literature streams related to inter-organizational dynamics and environmental sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In an effort to tackle the issue of plastic pollution, on January 16th, 2018, the European Commission released the first European Strategy for Plastics in a Circular Economy, a key document presenting an action plan at the EU level aimed at changing the way in which plastics are "produced, used and discarded" (EC 2018). Despite suggesting a new standard for environmental sustainability, however, no reduction in the production of plastics is proposed in the Strategy, as both the EC and European plastic producers insist on recycling as the best option to reduce pollution by plastic waste (PlasticsEurope 2018). NGOs, on the other hand, claim that reducing production is the only effective solution to the plastic crisis. In order to raise awareness on the issue, during summer 2018, Greenpeace Italy launched the Plastic Radar initiative; the campaign invited all citizens to signal the presence of plastic waste on Italian beaches through a mobile app. In the subsequent Plastic Radar's report (Greenpeace Italia 2018), Greenpeace openly confronted major plastic companies by presenting percentages of beach plastic waste classified per brand, with the ultimate intention of increasing pressure on producers - and not consumers. Drawing from ecolinguistics, this paper offers a critical discourse analysis of the two documents to the purpose of observing how language features are chosen and used to build an ideological conflict encompassing economic interests, political choices, and ethical implications. This study aims to map the key stakeholders towards Brazilian beef supply chain sustainability based on stakeholder theory. Using the typology proposed by Mitchell and colleagues in 1997, we identified definitive stakeholders (e.g., slaughterhouses), dependent stakeholders (e.g., government agencies), dominant stakeholder (e.g., Greenpeace), discretionary stakeholder (e.g., beef consumer), and nonstakeholder (e.g., media). Beyond providing a mapping of stakeholders and their roles, this study contributes by emphasizing the need to balance firm attention to its stakeholders, who wield varying levels of legitimacy, power, and urgency. The 'sustainable' narratives of Greenpeace, as they unfold in thousands of short videos retrievable from both YouTube and Greenpeace's official websites, are ultimately meant to engage more volunteers and donors. Accordingly, their affinities with some advertising languages are easily discernible, such as the use of topics that appeal to the public, for example idyllic natural settings. The multimodal composition of these videos deploys appealing film sequences of landscapes, alternately marked and unmarked by human interventions, whose meanings are reinforced through the lexico-grammar of the verbal level, which is notionally salient and rich in intertextual allusions. The purposes of the present study are to analyse their discursive and multimedia features through the lens of ecolinguistics, a relatively recent approach that is positioned within the wide domain of discourse analysis, and to investigate the cultural-linguistic implications of Greenpeace's proactive communication. A major focus of attention is on the advertised visions of better worlds and the new stories we should live by, where nature is not to be used for profit but treated as the ecosystem that our lives depend on. In 2014, LEGO decided not to prolong its co-promotion with Shell due to an extensive global campaign initiated by Greenpeace. The campaign was a reaction to Shell's plans to drill in the Alaskan Arctic. Rather than initiating a factual campaign targeting Shell's activities in the Arctic, Greenpeace attacked LEGO on account of the policies of Shell by impugning LEGO's reputation as a socially and environmentally responsible enterprise. What is noteworthy in this case is that Greenpeace used narrative and fictionality as strategic communicative tools to achieve its goal. Narrative and storytelling have received increasing attention in studies of organizational communication. In recent years, special interest has been shown toward organizational master narratives and counter-narratives. But hitherto only very little has been said on the role of fiction and fictionality as a rhetorical resource in the context of business and organizational communication. By means of a case study, this article examines how fictionality within a counter-narrative realm can merge the real and the fictive and thereby produce an effective campaign that highlights the possible and imagined rather than truth or untruth, avoiding discourses of proof or falsification. Greenpeace’s early work in the anti-sealing movement in the 1970s–1980s is a complex legacy for the organization to navigate. While Greenpeace Canada withdrew from the anti-sealing movement in 1986 and expressed regret for the impact of its actions on Inuit, the extent of the long-term damage caused by the anti-sealing movement, and Greenpeace’s controversial track record in it, motivated Greenpeace Canada to articulate a more robust public apology to Canadian Inuit in 2014. This commentary outlines a case for Greenpeace to continue its path of reconciliation for activities undertaken during the anti-sealing movement and to apologize to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador. Particularly, the commentary calls for an apology to sealers, their families, and their communities, and to First Nations and Inuit people from the province, for Greenpeace’s role in infl icting and promoting forms of violence, stigma, and cultural hatred, and in undermining Indigenous rights in the province. Nowadays, many known celebrities use social media as a channel to promote positive narratives and support humanitarian work. This article offers an analysis of the argumentative strategies employed in Instagram by a Spanish actor Javier Bardem, an Antarctic ambassador for Greenpeace, in order to attract the attention of the public to the ecological problems of the Antarctic Ocean. I have studied 76 posts published in Instagram during the 2018-2019 period. Starting from the theoretical framework of argumentation, as well as of pragmatic linguistics, I analyze those linguistic mechanisms and discursive strategies that are used with the aim to achieve the persuasive purposes. The article examine recent developments in the campaign to improve workplace and environmental protections in the shipbreaking industry; and mentions that Greenpeace began targeting European ship-owners who sent their decommissioned vessels to Indian beaches, where the ships were scrapped under environmental and labor conditions that would never be tolerated in a European country.

Greenpeace has been evaluating and addressing its historic relationships with Indigenous peoples, especially as it attempts to re-establish relationships with Inuit communities and a presence in the Arctic. Because the organization has a troubled history in that region due to the impact of its anti-sealing campaigns on the Inuit, decolonization poses considerable challenges for this organization. Attempts to square Greenpeace's environmental agenda with the desire among many Inuit to enter the global economy through the development of large-scale resource extraction projects will demand that Greenpeace reflect on some of its most basic objectives on issues such as climate change and resource extraction. As one of the most prominent environmental NGOs aiming to shape its policies around those rights, Greenpeace will stand as a model for environmental organizations looking to take similar steps.
