Abstract

Environmental NGO Greenpeace has criticized Unilever for failing to reduce its plastic footprint since 2017. According to Greenpeace's report, Unilever produced 610,000 tonnes of plastic packaging in 2017 and increased that to 698,000 tonnes in 2022. Unilever is the largest corporate seller of plastic sachets globally, and countries like the Philippines and Indonesia are calling for a ban on these sachets due to their environmental and health impacts. Greenpeace also noted that Unilever's goal of cutting its virgin plastic use in half by 2025 is unlikely to be achieved until at least 2034. In response, Unilever stated that it is committed to tackling plastic pollution and has increased its use of recycled plastic in its global portfolio. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation recognized Unilever as one of the businesses making the most progress in reducing its virgin plastic packaging footprint. However, the latest report from the foundation highlighted that other FMCG giants, including Nestlé, Mars, and PepsiCo, are also falling behind on their sustainable plastic use targets. Unilever acknowledged the challenge of reducing the use of plastic sachets and expressed its commitment to working with industry partners and stakeholders to develop viable alternatives.
