Abstract

In this paper, we study the dynamics of a massive aluminum Z-pinch plasma load and evaluate its performance as a soft X-ray radiator. A radiation hydrodynamic model self-consistently driven by a circuit describes the dynamics. Comparisons are made for the K- and L-shell soft X-ray emission as a function of the ionization dynamic model. The ionization dynamic models are represented by: 1) a time-dependent nonequilibrium (NEQ) model, 2) a collisional radiative equilibrium (CRE) model, and 3) a local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) model. For all three scenarios the radiation is treated 1) in the free streaming optically thin approximation where the plasma is treated as a volume emitter and 2) in the optically thick regime where the opacity for the lines and continuum is self-consistently calculated online and the radiation is transported through the plasma. Each simulation is carried out independently to determine the sensitivity of the implosion dynamics to the ionization and radiation model, i.e., how the ionization dynamic model affects the radiative yield and emission spectra. Results are presented for the L- and K-shell radiation yields and emission spectra as a function of photon energy from 10 eV to 10 keV. Also, departure coefficients from LTE are presented for selected levels and ionization stages. Index Terms - Magnetohydrodynamics, pulse power systems, X-ray spectroscopy.

Abstract

A low-pressure mercury-free moly-oxide-argon (MOO 3-Ar) electrodeless discharge is investigated with potential application to lighting. The inductive discharge is driven by a 13.56 MHz radio frequency (RF) generator at input powers between 100 and 200 W. Calibrated emission spectra in the near ultraviolet (UV), visible, and near infrared regions are recorded and the corresponding powers emitted as radiation are obtained. An extensive set of transition probabilities and rate coefficients for electron impact excitation between Mo states is assembled and a detailed collisional radiative model of the plasma is developed. The model includes 11 states of neutral Mo, the evaporative and recycling chemistry of MoO 3 into Mo and back, and the relevant species and reactions in argon-oxygen plasma. The possible paths for visible and UV radiation are analyzed in detail. The measured light output at 200 W RF input power is∼ 40 lumens per watt (lpw) with a potential to reach∼ 60-80 lpw. Abstract

A rep-rated multibeam KrF laser driver design is described for the 500 kJ Inert Fusion test Facility (FTF) and its optical pulse shaping capabilities are modeled by using the ORESTES laser kinetics code. A front-end pulse shaping method is proposed that has combined an optical Kerr gate with continuous wave (cw) 248 nm light and a 1 [micro]m control beam shaped by advanced fiber optic technology.

Abstract

A study was conducted to investigate the electron energy distribution function (EEDF), the resultant ionization and excitation rates of Ar and Kr, and the ionization, excitation, dissociation, and attachment rates of F2 molecules as a function of the gas composition in an e-beam pumped KrF amplifier. The excitation-to-ionization ratio for Kr is not constant, as generally assumed, but increases by a factor of two with a decrease in either the Kr or F2 abundance.
