Relatively few studies have analyzed the mechanisms underlying the cognitive changes that affect language in the elderly, and fewer have done so for narrative discourse. The goal of this study was to explore the neurofunctional changes associated with aging for different components of narrative discourse. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and behavioral data on 10 younger adults and 10 healthy elderly participants were collected. Ten younger adults in a non-proficient second language condition were included to explore the possibility that the age-related neurofunctional reorganization partly expresses demanding resource allocation. Results show within- and across-hemispheric differences in the neurofunctional pattern of activation in the older participants with reference to the younger ones, partially shared with the low-proficiency young adults, providing support for the recognized mechanisms underlying neural reserve and compensation. fNIRS was shown to be appropriate for studying the age-related neurofunctional reorganization of complex cognitive abilities.Copyright © 2012 by Elsevier Inc. Introduction: The development of reading and complex executive functions is fundamental for achieving social, academic, and professional success. So far, there is no single neuropsychological instrument that comprehensively assesses the domains of inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and reading comprehension. To assess executive functions related to reading, the "Assessment of Reading and Executive Functions" (AREF) was developed. In this study, we show initial evidence of validity and reliability for four subtests - Graphophonological-Semantic Flexibility, Inhibitory Control, Flexibility, and Working Memory., Methods: A total of 93 students from 4th to 9th grade, aged 8-14, in public ( n  = 61) and private ( n  = 32) schools were evaluated. Tasks from the AREF instrument, as well as measures of reading comprehension, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, working memory, and intelligence, were administered. Correlations between AREF scores and the other measures were performed to assess external construct validity. Performance differences between school groups on AREF subtests were analyzed using ANOVA, t-test, and Mann-Whitney tests, and the internal consistency of the instrument's tasks was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha coefficient., Results: The scores of the AREF subtests demonstrated significant positive correlations with reading measures (ranging from 0.339 to 0.367) and executive functions (ranging from 0.209 to 0.396). Significant differences were found in the performance of some AREF tasks when comparing individuals from public and private schools, as well as between 4th and 5th graders compared to students in higher grades. The internal consistency of the tasks was low for Graphophonological-Semantic Flexibility (Cronbach's α = 0.566), moderate for Inhibitory Control and Flexibility (Cronbach's α = 0.768), and high for Working Memory (Cronbach's α = 0.881)., Discussion: The results provide initial evidence of construct validity and reliability for the AREF subtests. Executive functions (EF) impact the success of university students. These skills appear to have a predictive role in academic performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an intervention program in EF aimed at university students, the πFex-Academics , seeking to verify whether there are gains in EF, a reduction in inattention and hyperactivity indicators and a transfer to reading comprehension. Participants were two professors and their respective classes, totaling 129 students. The classes were divided into: experimental group (EG) ( n  = 66) and control group (CG) ( n  = 63). All students underwent a pre- and post-intervention assessment. The program implementation process was mediated by the EG professor. Although no direct gains were identified in the indices of EF difficulties, greater gains in the EG were verified in the hyperactivity/impulsivity and reading comprehension indices, when compared to the CG. These findings are promising, demonstrating the first evidence of the effectiveness of the πFex - Academics . The incorporation of interventions into the university context can provide various benefits for students, with improved behavior and written language processing, necessary for the best possible academic success. Activities of EF mediation for higher education learning can be incorporated into extension courses or the curriculum of university courses.

Background: The Direct Assessment of Functional Status (DAFS) is the only instrument validated in Brazil that assesses functionality directly with the patient. However, this clinical tool takes a long time to be administered. This limits its use in hospitals and outpatient clinics that require brief assessment instruments. Additionally, we need to count with a direct assessment because the number of older adults living alone is increasing and we thus lack reliable informants., Objective: This study aimed to present the development and content validity evidence of a direct complex functionality test for older adults, the Brief Instrument for Direct Functionality Assessment (BIDFA)., Method: A total sample of 30 older adults and eight expert judges took part in the study stages. The BIDFA construction stages were: (1) literature review of functionality instruments; (2) development of seven ecological tasks to evaluate the performance of daily complex activities with the older adults; (3) content analysis by eight expert judges; (4) pilot study with 30 older adults; (5) the ecological analysis of items; (6) focus group analysis; and (7) final version of the BIDFA., Results: The BIDFA had evidence of content validity with an agreement index of 96.5%. The final version of BIDFA was left with six domains of complex functionality divided into semantic memory and time orientation; shopping skills; executive attention, math and finance skills; organization; planning and procedural memory; and problem-solving. The complex functionality score by BIDFA ranges from 0 to 100 points., Conclusion: The BIDFA was found to have good content validity by the expert judges and by the ecological analysis of the items by the older adults. Objective: Cognitive impairments are known to be a frequent cause of disability in bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression (MDD). Yet there is no consensus regarding the particular cognitive functions whose impairments can lead to disability in each domain of functioning. The aim of this study was to perform a longitudinal evaluation of working memory, inhibition, cognitive flexibility and attention in BD and MDD, investigate the relationship of these cognitive functions to disability and quality of life, and evaluate the impact of variables related to cognitive reserve (education and daily cognitive stimulation) on cognitive performance., Method: 31 participants (MDD = 12; BD = 19) were evaluated at baseline and after an average time of 2 years., Results: the BD group showed improvements in attention while patients with MDD improved on measures of attention and working memory. In BD working memory performance was associated with the cognition and mobility domains of functioning, and with physical and environmental quality of life. In MDD, cognitive flexibility was related to social relationships and environmental quality of life., Conclusion: working memory and cognitive flexibility may be an interesting target for interventions aiming to improve everyday functioning and quality of life in BD and MDD.

Objective: To identify under what circumstances a university student should be allowed academic accommodation for ADHD. To frame an evidence-based policy for use in Brazil based on a worldwide experience., Methods: We reviewed the literature to acquire information on what documents are commonly required by disability services before accommodation for ADHD is made (including malingering detection). We scrutinized the eligibility criteria of the best universities worldwide. Renowned experts in the field and national stakeholders were consulted., Results: We found no international standard for the assessment of students with ADHD who request academic accommodation. Even renowned institutions worldwide differ from one another in their approaches to academic accommodation on the grounds of ADHD. We propose a national unified set of criteria for Brazilian universities, which could generalize internationally., Discussion: Rigorous assessment is paramount for aiding students with disabilities while preventing ineligible students gaining an unfair advantage. Objectives: This paper analyses the relationship between sociodemographic variables, executive dysfunctions, Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) and the mainly dimensions of ADHD: hyperactivity-impulsivity (ADHD-H/I) and inattention (ADHD-IN) in Brazilian adults., Method: A cross-sectional, exploratory, and comparative design was used. A total of 446 participants (295 women) aging from 18 to 63 years old ( M = 3,499 years, SD = 10.7) were recruited on the internet. Correlations, t independent tests and regressions were conducted., Results: Higher scores in ADHD dimensions were associated to more executive functioning problems and time perception distortions in comparison to those participants without significant ADHD symptoms. However, ADHD-IN dimension as well as SCT were higher associated with these dysfunctions than ADHD-H/I. The regression results showed that ADHD-IN was more related to Self-Management to time while ADHD-H/I to Self-Restraint and SCT to Self-Organization/Problem Solving., Conclusion: This paper contributed to the distinction between SCT and ADHD in adults in important psychological dimensions.

The influence of the frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH) on cognition has been investigated by several studies in the literature. However, the implications of FRWH on executive development, intelligence, and academic achievement are not yet clear in adolescents with healthy development. The aim was to verify whether there are differences in executive functions, intelligence, and academic achievement between adolescents with high and low FRWH. Moreover, we aimed to investigate if there are differences in the parental FRWH between adolescents with high and low FRWH. The sample was composed of 47 healthy adolescents, n  = 24 with high FRWH and n  = 23 with low FRWH. Adolescents with higher FRWH had better performance on measures of vocabulary, Speech Act analysis, and Oral Narrative Discourse. Therefore, a high FRWH has a positive influence on the cognitive development of healthy adolescents, especially with regard to pragmatic language. However, adolescents with low FRWH performed better than those with a high FRWH on an automatic counting task. The interpretation of cognitive performance and academic achievement scores in neuropsychological assessment should consider the FRWH of parents and adolescents. This factor should be targeted by early stimulation interventions to help adolescents achieve the highest possible levels of global development.

Planetary and human health depend on Westerners' ability to reduce meat consumption. Meat production degrades the environment while excessive meat intake is associated with cancer and cardiovascular disease, among others. Effective reasons and motivations are needed for consumers to change their diet. The fact that modern animal agriculture inflicts a great deal of pain on animals from their birth to their slaughter, animal welfare/suffering may drive consumers to curtail their meat consumption. This systematic review examined a total of 90 papers to ascertain consumers' awareness of the pain animals experience in animal agriculture, as well as consumer attitudes towards meat reduction due to animal welfare. Results show that consumers have low awareness of animal agriculture. Awareness of animal agricultural practices and animal sentience is associated with increased negative attitudes towards animal suffering. Animal suffering due to farming practices, transportation, slaughter, and animal sentience are factors that may encourage a reduction in meat consumption, and even dietary change in the short term. There is also evidence that animal suffering may be a more compelling motivation for consumers' willingness to change their diet than for health or environmental reasons. Therefore, increasing consumers' awareness of animal suffering in meat production is paramount to contributing to reduced pressure on the environment and improved human health.

Aim: To examine whether executive functions, and gross motor skills were predictors for school performance in children with DCD, with risk for DCD (r-DCD), and with typical development (TD). Methods: Participants were 63 children with DCD ( M age  = 8.70, SD age  = .64), 31 children with r-DCD ( M age  = 8.90, SD age  = 0.74), and 63 typical development children ( M age  = 8.74, SD age  = .63). Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence, Movement Assessment Battery for Children-2, Test of Gross Motor Development-3, Oral Word Span in Sentences, Odd-One-Out, Go/No-Go, Hayling Test, Trail Making Test, Five Digits Test, and the Test of School Performance-II were utilized. Results: In DCD, processing speed ( β  = -.42, p  = .005), and auditory-motor inhibition ( β  = -.36, p  = .009), and auditory-verbal inhibition ( β  = -.38, p  = .023) predicted math performance; and auditory-motor ( β  = -.40, p  = .38) and visuospatial working memory ( β  = -.33 p  = .011) predicted writing performance. In r-DCD, auditory-motor ( β  = - .67; p  = .002) and visual-motor ( β  = -.40; p  = .040) inhibition predicted math performance; visual-motor inhibition predicted writing performance ( β  = -.47; p  = .015). Conclusion: Lower inhibitory control and visuospatial working memory scores affect children with DCD and r-DCD' school performance.

Neuropsychological assessment can enrich our understanding of Pediatric Bipolar Disorder (PB). This study aimed to: (1) analyze the occurrence of neuropsychological frequency of deficits and difficulties in children with PB; (2) verify whether there is a performance difference between PB type I (PB-I) and PB type II (PB-II)/unspecified, and between PB with and without ADHD; and (3) verify the cognitive efficiency differences within the PB group and control groups, and among clinical subgroups. Participants in the study were 16 children diagnosed with PB and 40 children with typical development (6-12 years old). The results indicated a high frequency of deficits/difficulties in verbal fluency, cognitive efficiency in performing basic abilities, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and working memory, with emphasis on verbal and executive losses. There were indications that type PB-I and comorbidity with ADHD negatively impact a child's neuropsychological development. The clinical group showed more cognitive efficiency losses compared with the control group, and greater losses were observed in PB-I and in PB with ADHD. The role of neuropsychological evaluation in multidomain and nonlinear statistical analysis is critical to gaining an understanding of the clinical and cognitive heterogeneity of PB.

Purpose: Changes in cerebral cortical regions occur in HIV-infected patients, even in those with mild neurocognitive disorders. Working memory / attention is one of the most affected cognitive domain in these patients, worsening their quality of life. Our objective was to assess whether cortical thickness differs between HIV-infected patients with and without working memory deficit., Methods: Forty-one adult HIV-infected patients with and without working memory deficit were imaged on a 1.5 T scanner. Working memory deficit was classified by composite Z scores for performance on the Digits and Letter-Number Sequencing subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (third edition; WAIS-III). Cortical thickness was determined using FreeSurfer software. Differences in mean cortical thickness between groups, corrected for multiple comparisons using Monte-Carlo simulation, were examined using the query design estimate contrast tool of the FreeSurfer software., Results: Greater cortical thickness in left pars opercularis of the inferior frontal gyrus, and rostral and caudal portions of the left middle frontal gyrus (cluster 1; p = .004), and left superior frontal gyrus (cluster 2; p = .004) was observed in HIV-infected patients with working memory deficit compared with those without such deficit. Negative correlations were found between WAIS-III-based Z scores and cortical thickness in the two clusters (cluster 1: ρ = -0.59; cluster 2: ρ = -0.47)., Conclusion: HIV-infected patients with working memory deficit have regions of greater thickness in the left frontal cortices compared with those without such deficit, which may reflect increased synaptic contacts and/or an inflammatory response related to the damage caused by HIV infection., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to analyze and compare the performance and strategies used by control subjects and patients with unilateral brain damage on phonemic and semantic Verbal Fluency tasks., Methods: The sample consisted of 104 participants divided into four groups (26 with left hemisphere damage and aphasia- LHDa, 28 with left hemisphere damage and no aphasia- LHDna, 25 with right hemisphere damage- RHD and 25 neurologically healthy control subjects). All participants were administered the phonemic ("M" letter-based) and semantic (animals) verbal fluency tasks from the Montreal-Toulouse Language Assessment Battery (MTL-BR)., Results: Patients in the LHDa group showed the worst performance (fewer words produced, fewer clusters and switches) in both types of fluency task. RHD group showed fewer switching productions when compared with controls and LHDna had fewer words productions than controls in the first 30 seconds block., Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the LHDa group obtained lower scores in most measures of SVF and PVF when compared to the other groups.

A set of inhibitory control tasks for the smartphone (Go/No-Go App) was developed for typical children and children with development coordination disorder (DCD). The content, construct, and criterion validity was examined. The inhibitory control Go/No-Go App test is comprised of four tasks: auditory and visual stimuli with motor and verbal responses. Six experts in neuropsychology and 252 Brazilian children (139 boys; 113 girls) participated in the study, including a subgroup of children with DCD ( n  = 53). A high level of agreement for clarity and pertinence was observed among the experts (Gwet's Agreement Coefficients > .09), highlighting its content validity. Suitable Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega results were observed. The confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA) accepted the results for the Auditory-Motor (γ = .83), Visual-Motor (γ = .73), Auditory-Verbal (γ = .67) and Visual-Verbal (γ = .73) tasks. The model presented adequate adjustment indexes (Chi-square = .48, p  = .787), 2/DF = .24; RMSEA = .00; GFI = .99; CFI = 1.00; AIC = 326.90. The Go/No-Go app is a test with adequate validity for the assessment of inhibition in children with DCD and may be very helpful due to the variation of the stimuli and the responses.

The Modified Card Sorting Test (MCST) is a widely used variation of the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test. It is faster to administer, less frustrating for respondents and less ambiguous in its scoring but has been criticized for its task impurity and low discriminability between control participants and clinical groups prone to executive dysfunction. This study aimed to examine the executive functions (EF) underlying traditional (number of categories completed, perseverative errors) and novel scores for the MCST, and compare their ability to differentiate between control and clinical samples. Novel and traditional MCST scores were compared between 94 control participants, 87 with bipolar disorder and 64 with major depression. The relationship between MCST scores and traditional EF tasks was examined through correlation and regression analyses. All MCST scores were associated with at least one measure of EF, the most common of which were the Trail Making or Hayling Tests. IQ predicted most scores on the MCST, save for nonperseverative errors and categorizing efficiency. Traditional and novel scores differentiated between clinical and control groups. These findings support the utility of the MCST in detecting executive dysfunction and highlight the importance of new scoring methods in increasing the specificity and interpretability of this task.

Introduction: Cognitive reserve plays a protective role against executive dysfunction in healthy adults and individuals with psychiatric illnesses such as bipolar disorder. However, the magnitude of the influence of cognitive reserve on specific executive functions (EFs), and its impact relative to variables such as depressive symptoms, age and psychiatric comorbidities, is unexplored. This study aimed to quantify the influence of cognitive reserve on specific EFs, and compare its impact with that of depressive symptoms, age and psychiatric comorbidities, in separate models for patients with bipolar disorder and healthy adults., Method: This was a cross-sectional study of 121 adults with no mood disorders and 109 with bipolar disorder, all of whom underwent a comprehensive psychiatric assessment and evaluation of the EFs. Cognitive reserve was measured using years of education, IQ and reading and writing habits. The association between EFs and predictors (cognitive reserve, depressive symptoms, age and psychiatric comorbidities) was evaluated through structural equation modeling. Four models were constructed for each group independently (bipolar disorder and control), one each for working memory, verbal fluency, inhibition and flexibility, due to group differences in age and cognitive reserve., Results: Working memory, inhibition and flexibility were most significantly predicted by cognitive reserve and age. Verbal fluency was only predicted by cognitive reserve. Comorbidities and depressive symptoms were not significant in any of the models. Cognitive reserve had a positive influence on all EFs in models for patients with bipolar disorder and models for control participants. Age had a negative impact on three of the four EFs tested., Conclusion: Fostering cognitive reserve through continued education and cognitively stimulating leisure activities may be an effective intervention for executive dysfunction in patients and non-patients alike. In some cases, the effects of these interventions may outweigh the negative cognitive impact of aging, depressive symptoms and psychiatric conditions.

Worldwide life expectancy has increased dramatically in recent years. Also on the rise are incidents of pathologies related to aging, such as Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer's Disease (AD). An inaccurate diagnosis impairs the well-being and the quality of life of patients and their relatives, as well as being a financial burden on the health system. Continued education pertaining to the neuropsychological field is uncommon for health workers involved in general practice. This article aims to present the process of development and content validity of the "CENEES Program - Psychoeducation for Health Staff on The Neuropsychology of Aging". The CENEES Program was developed in six steps which include: literature review, first draft, focal group, adjustments after focal group, judgment analysis ( n  = 4), and finally the last version. The inter-rater reliability index after judgment analysis was 0.785. The final version of the CENEES Program contains eight meetings, divided into 4 modules: 1) Fundamentals of Neuroscience; 2) Memory; 3) Executive Functions; and 4) Communication. The final meeting was called "Review". The CENEES Program is a new resource to help professionals who work within the general practice field, especially community health workers. As far as we know, there is no psychoeducation program on aging which contains the four subjects that are covered in the CENEES Program. The CENEES Program could assist the workers' daily activities and make them comfortable to offer and build actions in the community. A pilot and follow-up studies are suggested.

Background Patient Competency Rating Scale (PCRS-R-BR) is a clinical tool to evaluate the degree of competence in cognitive skills perceived by patients with brain injuries. However, no studies have investigated the influence of sociodemographic variables on self-report and self-awareness of healthy individuals. Aim This study aimed to (1) present normative data from the PCRS-R-BR in a healthy adult Brazilian sample; and (2) investigate psychometric properties of the scale Method One hundred and fifty-four adults that were divided in three age groups and two education groups and their informants completed the PCRS-R-BR. Results Score on the PCRS-R-BR Patient's Form differed as a function of age with younger adults reporting less competency than older individuals. An education effect was found on Attention/Working memory Factor on the Informant's PCRS-R-BR with informants of higher education adults reporting better competency than lower education individuals. A gender effect was observed on the Informant's Form. The Informant's Form scores of informants of women were higher than the scores provided by the informants of men. PCRS-R-BR showed adequate consistency coefficients and six factors. Conclusion PCRS-R-BR scores showed acceptable validity evidence and provides information regarding how age and gender effects may influence ratings in a Brazilian sample.

The addition of natural fibers used as reinforcement has great appeal in the construction materials industry since natural fibers are cheaper, biodegradable, and easily available. In this work, we analyzed the feasibility of using the fibers of piassava, tucum palm, razor grass, and jute from the Amazon rainforest as reinforcement in mortars, exploiting the mechanical properties of compressive and flexural strength of samples with 1.5%, 3.0%, and 4.5% mass addition of the composite binder (50% Portland cement + 40% metakaolin + 10% fly ash). The mortars were reinforced with untreated (natural) and treated (hot water treatment, hornification, 8% NaOH solution, and hybridization) fibers, submitted to two types of curing (submerged in water, and inflated with CO 2 in a pressurized autoclave) for 28 days. Mortars without fibers were used as a reference. For the durability study, the samples were submitted to 20 drying/wetting cycles. The fibers improved the flexural strength of the mortars and prevented the abrupt rupture of the samples, in contrast to the fragile behavior of the reference samples. The autoclave cure increased the compressive strength of the piassava and tucum palm samples with 4.5% of fibers.

Introduction: Self-awareness of cognitive, emotional, functional, and social performance is critical for compliance with treatment. However, few studies have investigated self-awareness and the associated effects on other cognitive variables in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) after surgical treatment., Aim: This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of impaired self-awareness (ISA) in patients with TLE who have undergone surgical treatment. Associated correlations with clinical variables (frequency of seizures before surgery, time elapsed since the epilepsy diagnosis, depression, and anxiety) and verbal and visual episodic memory function and differences between patients with right and left TLE were also investigated., Method: Twenty-three adults with TLE after surgical treatment were assessed with the Patient Competency Rating Scale (PCRS-R-BR), the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Task (RAVLT), and the Modified Ruche Visuospatial Learning Test (RUCHE-M). Patients were considered to have memory dysfunction if delayed recall as assessed with the RUCHE-M or RAVLT was at or below the 25th percentile. Patients were considered to have ISA if PCRS-R-BR discrepancy scores were at or above the 75th percentile. Underestimated cognitive ability (UCA) was defined as a PCRS-R-BR discrepancy percentile score ≤25. Results were analyzed using frequency, Spearman correlation, regression analyses, and the Mann-Whitney test., Results: Frequency analysis of the total sample indicated ISA in 39.13% of patients (n = 9), UCA in 39.13% of patients (n = 9), and impaired verbal and/or visual memory performance in 69.56% of patients (n = 16). Moderate positive correlations were found between the frequency of seizures before surgical treatment and relatives' reports, as well as between the duration of time that had elapsed since the epilepsy diagnosis and patient reports. Negative and moderate correlations were found between the frequency of seizures and the discrepancy score, as well as between depression and patient reports. No differences in PCRS-R-BR were found between patients with right vs. left TLE. No clinical variables significantly predicted self-report or self-awareness., Conclusion: Patients with TLE exhibit various patterns of ISA and negative effects on cognitive function after surgical treatment. Objective: We aimed to evaluate whether human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients with and without clinically significant memory deficits and healthy control participants differ on in vivo hydrogen-1 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) in the posterior cingulate gyri., Materials and Methods: In total, 21 HIV-positive patients with memory deficit (HIV+wMD) were compared with 15 HIV-positive patients without memory deficit (HIV+wOMD) and 22 sex-, age-, and education-matched control participants. Memory impairments were classified based on the participants' performance on the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Short echo time (30 ms), single-voxel H-MRS was performed using a 1.5-T magnetic resonance scanner., Results: The HIV+wMD and HIV+wOMD groups had higher choline/creatine ratio in the posterior cingulate gyri than the control group. There were no significant metabolite ratio differences between the HIV+wMD and HIV+wOMD groups., Conclusion: HIV-positive patients with and without memory deficits had significantly higher choline/creatine ratios than controls in the posterior cingulate gyri, which may reflect cerebral inflammation, altered cell membrane metabolism, microgliosis, and/or astrocytosis.

Background: Significant heterogeneity is observed in the cognitive profiles of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depression (MDD), characterized in part by differences in individual and clinical variables such as cognitive reserve (CR) and depression severity. However, no other study evaluated how this variables may interact regarding neurocognitive functioning. The aim of the present exploratory study was to evaluate the interaction between different depressive symptoms severity, CR and diagnosis with neurocognitive functioning., Method: 202 participants (MDD=91; BD=111) classified either as euthymic, with mild depression or moderate to severe depression, and low or high CR completed a neuropsychological evaluation of verbal fluency, working memory (WM), inhibitory control (IC), cognitive flexibility (CF) and attention (Att)., Results: Neuroprotective effects of CR were observed in patients with BD within a major depressive episode in WM, IC, FC and Att. In MDD, CR acted as a neuroprotective factor during euthymia and moderate to severe depression in the same cognitive functions. CR and depression severity differentiated the cognitive profiles of individuals with BD and MDD., Limitations: Some variables related to neurocognitive performance like medication use, number of mood episodes, illness duration or previous hospitalizations were not controlled., Conclusion: CR may be protective against cognitive impairment in both BD and MDD, and these effects were observed in euthymia and during depressive episodes of varying severity. These findings highlight the importance of investigating such variables in the neuropsychological evaluation of mood disorders, which may help to understand the cognitive heterogeneity within these populations., (Copyright © 2020. Objectives: Assessing late-life anxiety using an instrument with sound psychometric properties including cross-cultural invariance is essential for cross-national aging research and clinical assessment. To date, no cross-national research studies have examined the psychometric properties of the frequently used Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (GAI) in depth., Method: Using data from 3,731 older adults from 10 national samples (Australia, Brazil, Canada, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Singapore, Thailand, and United States), this study used bifactor modeling to analyze the dimensionality of the GAI. We evaluated the "fitness" of individual items based on the explained common variance for each item across all nations. In addition, a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis was applied, testing for measurement invariance across the samples., Results: Across samples, the presence of a strong G factor provides support that a general factor is of primary importance, rather than subfactors. That is, the data support a primarily unidimensional representation of the GAI, still acknowledging the presence of multidimensional factors. A GAI score in one of the countries would be directly comparable to a GAI score in any of the other countries tested, perhaps with the exception of Singapore., Discussion: Although several items demonstrated relatively weak common variance with the general factor, the unidimensional structure remained strong even with these items retained. Verbal fluency (VF) has contributed to building cognitive maps as well as differentiating healthy populations from those with dementia., Objectives: To compare the performance of healthy controls and patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in two semantic VF tasks (animals/clothes) and a phonemic VF task (letter P). Also, to analyze the relationship between the frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH) and VF in individuals with low educational level., Methods: Sixty-seven older adults aged 60-80 years and with 2-8 years of schooling were divided into three groups: controls (n=25), older adults with MCI (n=24), and older adults with AD (n=18). We analyzed the type, mean size, and number of clusters, switches, intersections, and returns. A post-hoc single-factor ANOVA analysis was conducted to verify differences between groups., Results: Total words in the phonemic VF and the animal category discriminated the three groups. Regarding the animal category, AD patients performed worse than controls in the total number of words, taxonomic clusters, returns, and number of words remembered. We found a moderate correlation between FRWH and total number of words in the phonemic fluency., Conclusions: Semantic (animate) and phonemic (total words) VF differentiated controls and clinical groups from each other - the phonemic component was more related to FRWH than the semantic one. The phonemic VF seems to be more related to cognitive reserve. Background: Discourse production is a very complex cognitive task that requires the integration of several linguistic cognitive skills. Socio-demographic factors such as schooling can impact on cognitive tasks. This study investigated the impact of age and schooling in some macrolinguistic and microlinguistic aspects in the written discourse of healthy adults., Methods: Individuals with no previous history of language, hearing, neurological, or psychiatric disorders were asked to write a story based on a figure that showed a "bank robbery." A total of 463 graphic narrative were analyzed. The schooling was stratified into the following three bands: 5 to 8 years, 9 to 11 years and 12 or more, and the age ranged from 19 to 75 years., Results: Individuals with high schooling (12 years or more) produced discourses with more information units, more coherent, and cohesive. The oldest group (60 to 75 years) needed more time to finish the written production., Conclusion: The schooling influences some micro and macrolinguistic aspects in the written discourse production. A higher educational level provided a greater number of words as well as a higher number of information units, and the discourses produced are more coherent and cohesive. The age influenced only the time of discourse production.

Background: Children with motor impairments also show poor performance in some executive functions' components. However, there is no consensus on which specific executive subdomain is more impacted., Aim: The objective of this study was to compare executive functions in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD), at risk for DCD (r-DCD), and in typically developing (TD) children., Methods and Procedures: A sample of 397 children was assessed using the MABC-2. Two groups of children were identified; DCD (n = 63) and at r-DCD (n = 31). A third matched group of children with TD (n = 63) was formed. The MABC-2 checklist and the WASI tests were used as screening tools. Measures of executive function including verbal and nonverbal tasks for working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility were tested. Multivariate analysis of variance followed by analyses of variance and Bonferroni tests were used to verify group effects on executive functions., Results: A significant group effects were found for Working Memory, Λ = .78, F(4, 360) = 10.12, p ≤ .001, η p 2 = .12; Inhibitory Control, Λ = .59, F(16, 294) = 5.48, p ≤ .001, η p 2 = .23; and Cognitive Flexibility and Inhibitory Control, Λ = .60, F(22, 288) = 3.74, p ≤ .001, η p 2 = .22, with moderate effect sizes. The DCD group showed lower scores compared with the TD group on the visuospatial and verbal working memory; inhibitory control and in tasks of cognitive flexibility; the r-DCD group showed lower scores compared with the TD group for visuospatial working memory and for cognitive flexibility., Conclusions and Implications: Poor performance in several measures of executive functions in children with DCD emphasized the need of motor/executive task-specific interventions. Quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome in psychiatric illnesses like bipolar disorder (BD). However, little is known about the variables that affect it, and therefore contribute to prognosis and treatment outcomes in these populations. This study aimed to explore QoL in BD and investigate its relationship with modifiable (cognitive reserve, cognitive ability, mood symptoms) and non-modifiable factors (diagnosis, previous suicide attempts, substance misuse, age). The WHOQOL-bref was administered to 121 control participants and 109 patients with BD, who also underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessments. Factor analysis was used to identify latent constructs underlying WHOQOL-bref domains, and structural equation models were used to examine predictors of each latent construct. Two latent constructs were identified in the WHOQOL-bref, and labeled 'Personal' and 'Social' QoL. Both were directly predicted by depression symptoms and a diagnosis of BD, and indirectly predicted by (hypo)manic symptoms. Cognitive reserve was a stronger predictor of social QoL than a diagnosis of BD. Our findings suggest that the management of depression symptoms and fostering of cognitive reserve may improve QoL in BD. There is evidence of an association between childhood maltreatment and lifelong cognitive impairment. Few studies investigate cognitive functioning in maltreated children. The objective of this study was to investigate whether there are differences in executive processing between maltreated and nonmaltreated children. Additionally, clinical symptoms were compared between groups and possible associations between clinical symptoms, and deficits in executive functions were investigated. The sample consisted of 55 children (8-12 years), 30 with a history of maltreatment and 25 with no history of maltreatment. An interview was conducted with the child's legal guardian and instruments were administered: Juvenile Victimization Questionnaire (JVQ), Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS). The following clinical instruments were administered to the children: JVQ, Trauma Symptom Checklist for Children (TSCC), and Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Children underwent neuropsychological assessment. Data were analyzed by comparing the groups for clinical and cognitive variables. Differences were found between the groups in all executive functions. Most clinical symptomatology scales showed differences between the groups. Few associations were found between clinical and executive impairment profiles. Cognitive stimulation interventions, focused on inhibitory control, should be proposed in combination with psychotherapy.

Background: Narrative discourse (ND) refers to one's ability to verbally reproduce a sequence of temporally and logically-linked events. Impairments in ND may occur in subjects with Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI) and Alzheimer's Disease (AD), but correlates across this function, neuroimaging and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) AD biomarkers remain understudied., Objectives: We sought to measure correlates among ND, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) indexes and AD CSF biomarkers in patients within the AD spectrum., Results: Groups differed in narrative production (NProd) and comprehension. aMCI and AD presented poorer inference abilities than controls. AD subjects were more impaired than controls and aMCI regarding WB (p<0.01). ROIs DTI assessment distinguished the three groups. Mean Diffusivity (MD) in the uncinate, bilateral parahippocampal cingulate and left inferior occipitofrontal fasciculi negatively correlated with NProd. Changes in specific tracts correlated with T-tau/Aβ1-42 ratio in CSF., Conclusions: AD and aMCI patients presented more ND impairments than controls. Those findings were associated with changes in ventral language-associated and in the inferior parahippocampal pathways. Purpose: Search for reliability and validity evidence for the Montreal Communication Evaluation Brief Battery (MEC B) for adults with right brain damage., Methods: Three hundred twenty-four healthy adults and 26 adults with right brain damage, aged 19-75 years, with two or more years of education were evaluated with MEC B. The MEC B Battery contains nine tasks that aim to evaluate communicative abilities as discourse, prosody, lexical-semantic and pragmatic process. Two sources of reliability evidence were used: internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) and interrater reliability. Construct validity was evaluated comparing the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery (MEC), expanded version and MEC B tasks., Results: Internal consistence was satisfactory and the interrater reliability was considered excellent, as were correlations between MEC Battery and MEC B Battery tasks., Conclusion: The MEC B Battery showed satisfactory reliability and validity evidences. It can be used as outcome measure of intervention programs and assist speech therapists to plan rehabilitation programs.

Apollo & Rosetta is an Exergame developed for Inhibitory Control stimulation in Elementary School children. This works' goal has been to demonstrate the behavior of the difficulty curves planned for seven activities (minigames) ingame, as well as their correspondence with the variables collected during a pilot neuropsychological intervention. Seven students participated in the study and played the minigames 1528 times during the 3-month intervention. Each of the minigames had a difficulty curve computed with the goal of keeping the players in the state of Flow. The curves were designed in cycles which grow throughout levels (Normal Level) to a peak (Peak Level), followed by a rest period (Rest Level). The pilot study encompassed three different analyses: (1) Exploratory performance analysis with Spearman correlation, which indicated a positive and significant general correlation between performance and level difficulty; (2) Success exploratory analysis, which showed that as the stages progressed, the success rate increased, even if the level difficulty also increased; (3) Analysis of the factors which influenced performance, through Mixed Effects Logistic Regression and the Backward method. This analysis demonstrated that the odds ratio for overcoming challenges between Normal levels was 0.71 [0.59;0.86] times lower than Rest Level ( p -value = 0.000), whereas in Peak levels it was 0.62 [0.47;0.83] times lower than Rest level values ( p -value = 0.001). Despite the crucial role played by the executive functions (EF) to cognitive, emotional, and social development of children before and during school years, little attention has been given to construct and analyze the efficacy of programs that intend to develop them. The program of neuropsychological stimulation of cognition in students: emphasis on EF, or PENcE (an acronym from its original name in Portuguese, Programa de Estimulação Neuropsicológica da Cognição em Escolares: ênfase nas Funções Executivas ), is an early and preventive intervention program for school-aged children, and implemented at school three times a week for 5 months. The PENcE was structured in four modules, each focusing on a different executive component: organization and planning, inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. The objectives of this study were to verify the effectiveness of the PENcE among elementary school children and to investigate whether there are transfer effects to other executive, cognitive, and academic abilities. The sample consisted of 113 children attending 3rd or 4th grade at two public elementary schools. Eight classes participated in the study, divided into two groups: an experimental group (EG) (four classes; n = 64), which received the intervention, and a control group (CG) (four classes; n = 49), which continued their regular school activities. The EF and academic skills of both participant groups were evaluated before and after the intervention. The EG showed significantly greater improvements in inhibitory control, working memory, and abstract planning relative to the CG, with a small to medium effect size. There were transfer effects to other cognitive and academic abilities. These findings suggest the PENcE may be a useful method of improving EF and could benefit both school-aged children and education professionals.

Conversational discourse (CD) is among the most complex tasks in everyday life and relies on multiple cognitive domains (communicative and executive abilities). Alterations in discourse comprehension and production are often present in pathological aging. However, there is still a need to identify changes in healthy aging., Objective: This study aimed to compare young and older adults for the frequency of impaired communicative behaviors on a CD task. Performance was scored according to the Complementary Procedure of Conversational Discourse Analysis (CPCDA), developed based on the CD task from the Montreal Communication Evaluation Battery., Methods: A total of 95 participants (54 young-adults and 41 older adults) were evaluated. The frequency of communicative behaviors was compared between groups using MANCOVA and Chi-square tests., Results: Young adults showed fewer impairments in expression, pragmatics, cohesion, coherence, comprehension and emotional prosody. Older adults showed higher levels of verbal initiative and had fewer word finding difficulties. Communicative behaviors associated with planning and self-monitoring (e.g. repetition of information and syllabic false starts) appear to be common in the speech of healthy individuals in general., Conclusion: Studies which evaluate both discursive and cognitive skills are required to identify age-related changes. Purpose: Cognitive dysfunction is common in neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Memory is a commonly affected cognitive domain. Clinically, however, it is difficult to detect memory deficits. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether normal controls and SLE patients with and without memory deficit differ in terms of white-matter integrity., Methods: Twenty SLE patients with memory deficit were compared to 47 SLE patients without memory deficit and 22 sex-, age-, and education-matched control individuals. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed in a 1.5-Tesla scanner. For tract-based spatial statistics analysis, a white-matter skeleton was created. A permutation-based inference with 5000 permutations with a threshold of p < 0.05 was used to identify abnormalities in fractional anisotropy (FA). The mean diffusivity (MD), radial diffusivity (RD) and axial diffusivity (AD) were also projected onto the mean FA skeleton., Results: Compared to controls, SLE patients with and without memory deficit had decreased FA in: bilateral anterior thalamic radiation, inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus, superior longitudinal fasciculus, uncinate fasciculus, corticospinal tract, genu, and body of the corpus callosum. SLE patients with and without memory deficit also presented increased MD and RD values compared to controls in these areas. Comparison between SLE patients with and without memory deficit did not present significant differences in DTI parameters., Conclusion: DTI can detect extensive abnormalities in the normal-appearing white matter of SLE patients with and without memory deficit, compared to controls. However, there was no difference, in terms of white-matter integrity, between the groups of SLE patients.

Verbal fluency (VF) is a widely used tool in neuropsychological assessment., Objective: We aimed to investigate the influence of age and educational level on clustering and switching in three VF modalities: phonemic (PVF), semantic (SVF) and unconstrained (UVF). We evaluated type of cluster, mean cluster size, and quantity of clusters, intersections, and returns. A total of 260 healthy subjects were assessed., Methods: Participants were divided into three age groups: young adults (18 to 39 years), middle-aged adults (40 to 59 years) and older adults (60 to 80 years) and into two groups of educational level: 1-8 years (low), 9 years or more (high). A two-way ANOVA analysis was conducted to analyze the effect of age and educational level and its interactions. A repeated measures ANOVA was performed to verify the performance during the task., Results: A main effect of age was detected on the UVF and SVF scores for total switches, taxonomic clusters, and for the total semantic clusters on the SVF. There was a greater effect of educational level on total switches (UVF, PFV and SVF), taxonomic clusters (UVF and SVF), thematic clusters and total semantic cluster (UVF), phonemic and mixed clusters (PVF), mean cluster size (UVF and SVF) and intersections (SVF). Cognitive development in children presents peculiarities according to groups of age, gender, and type of school. Few studies have been investigating the effects of all these factors. The aim of this study was to investigate the main effects and the interactions of age, gender, and type of school in 419 children from ages 6 to 12 years old evaluated by the Child Brief Neuropsychological Assessment Battery (NEUPSILIN-Inf). Older children, children in private schools and girls presented better results. Interactions between all three independent variables were observed in different cognitive domains. The results highlight both the heterogeneity and the influence of multiple factors in children's neuropsychological development.

Acquired language impairments may accompany different conditions. Most recent studies have shown that there is an important relationship between language and cognitive functions, such as executive functions (EF). Therefore, we aimed to investigate which main EF components appear to have the greatest impact in the most prevalent acquired communication disorders in adults, and which neuropsychological tests are being used to evaluate them. In addition, we sought to characterize the relationship between the executive functions and language in these conditions. Working memory (WM) was the most frequently chosen cognitive measure, being evaluated by different span tasks. A relationship between WM and narrative and conversational discourse, writing abilities and grammatical comprehension was found. Other currently used cognitive tests included the Trail Making, Wisconsin, Stroop and Verbal Fluency tests. Objective: This study aimed to examine the accuracy in identifying facial expressions and the perceived intensity of emotions of happiness, sadness, disgust, anger, fear, surprise in bipolar disorder (BD), and major depressive disorder (MDD)., Method: Ninety-three adult participants (n = 30 BD, 80% female; n = 18 MDD, 72.2% female; n = 45 C, 46.7% female) completed a facial expression task. Stimuli in the task were first presented for 200 ms, followed by 500 ms, and 1000 ms. Participants were asked to identify the emotion expressed by each face and judge its intensity on a Likert scale. Accuracy and perceived intensity of expressions corresponding to each emotion were compared between groups using a repeated measures ANCOVA, with length of stimulus presentation as a within-subjects variable., Results: Expressions of sadness were rated more intensely by patients with BD, and expressions of anger by those with MDD, than control participants. Subjects with BD were less accurate than control participants in identifying expressions of disgust. An interaction effect was also identified for the detection of sadness, whereby patients with BD were significantly less accurate when expressions were shown for 200 ms., Conclusions: The increased intensity with which emotions were perceived by patients with BD and MDD has important repercussions for patient functioning and clinical practice. A tendency to overestimate the intensity of certain facial expressions in mood disorders may lead patients to interpret social cues erroneously and engage in dysfunctional behaviors and cognitive patterns. Future studies should focus on this variable in addition to the accuracy of emotion identification.

This study aimed to evaluate the performance of patients with right hemisphere damage (RHD) with or without hemispatial neglect (HN) on a cancellation task. The study involved 31 control participants and 31 patients with RHD, matched by age, education, and frequency of reading and writing habits. The numbers of omission and random errors as well as the mean time to task completion were compared between adults with and without RHD, as well as between patients with and without HN. The latter made more left-sided omission errors, and more overall omission errors, than patients with RHD and no HN. The location of the first target canceled differed between subjects with RHD and control participants, as well as between patients with and without hemineglect. The use of organized vs. disorganized search strategies did not differ between groups. Further studies are required to investigate the performance of patients with HN of different levels of severity.

Background: Studies have reliably identified an association between suicide attempts and executive functions such as decision making (DM) and inhibitory control (IC) in patients with mood disorders. As such, the present study aimed to investigate the association between inhibition, DM, impulsivity and the history of suicide attempts in individuals with bipolar (BD) or major depressive disorder (MDD), identifying which assessment instruments may be most strongly associated with suicide in clinical samples., Methods: The sample included 80 control subjects and two groups of patients with BD and MDD, matched by age and education (26 with a history of suicide attempts [MD+], and 26 with no such history [MD-]). Participants completed behavioral and self-report measures of DM and IC, which were compared between groups using ANCOVA, followed by logistic regression for patients with mood disorders only, and the presence or absence of a history of suicide as the outcome., Results: Cognitive performance did not differ between groups. The MD+ group showed significantly higher motor and attentional impulsivity on the BIS-11 than the MD- and control groups. A regression analysis containing these scores showed that motor impulsivity was the only significant predictor of a history of suicide (OR = 1.14; 95%CI 1.00-1.30)., Conclusions: Self-reported motor impulsivity was a significant predictor of suicide. These findings underscore the importance of self-report measures in neuropsychological assessment, and their contributions to the management and prognosis of patients with mood disorders. Objectives: Many children in low- and middle-income countries fail to reach their developmental potential. We sought to determine if a parenting program focused on the promotion of reading aloud enhanced parent-child interactions and child development among low-income families in northern Brazil., Methods: This was a cluster-randomized study of educational child care centers randomly assigned to receive an additional parenting program (intervention) or standard child care without a parenting component (control). Parent-child dyads were enrolled at the beginning of the school year and were assessed at enrollment and at the end of the school year. Families in intervention centers could borrow children's books on a weekly basis and could participate in monthly parent workshops focused on reading aloud. We compared parents and children in intervention and control centers 9 months after the start of the intervention on measures of parent-child interaction and child language, cognitive, and social-emotional development., Results: Five hundred and sixty-six parent-child dyads (279 intervention; 287 control) in 12 child care clusters (26-76 children per cluster) were assessed at enrollment; 464 (86%) contributed follow-up data. Parents in the intervention group engaged in significantly greater cognitive stimulation (Cohen's d = 0.43) and higher quantity and quality of reading interactions ( d = 0.52-0.57) than controls; children in the intervention scored significantly higher than controls on receptive vocabulary ( d = 0.33), working memory ( d = 0.46), and IQ ( d = 0.33)., Conclusions: An innovative program focused on the promotion of parent-child reading aloud resulted in benefits to parent-child interactions and to child language and cognitive development that were greater than those provided by educational child care alone. This systematic review aimed to characterize empirical studies on neuropsychological interventions to stimulate executive functions in children with typical development. Searches were conducted according to the PRISMA method. Nineteen (19) studies on the analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs in pre-school and school children were obtained. There was a predominance of studies that used computerized cognitive training, most of them involving the stimulation of working memory. Others used pen and paper forms, or hybrid tasks, and some programs used a school curriculum approach aiming to improve self-regulation. Results provide preliminary evidence on the effectiveness of such on the executive performance in children with typical development. Each executive component, as well as each type of intervention has its peculiarities. Computerized trainings and pen and paper tasks tend to improve the targeted executive functions, but transfer effects are still inconsistent. Regarding the effects of programs using school curriculum approach, they seem to be more generalizable, with functionality gains accomplishing mainly socio-emotional regulation. Multimodal approaches may be even more effective. Follow-up studies should be targeted in order to track the maintenance of direct and transfer effects regarding mainly cognitive and social development associated to school achievement.

Introduction: Decision making (DM) is among the most important abilities for everyday functioning. However, the most widely used measures of DM come from behavioral paradigms, whose ecological validity and standalone use has been criticized in the literature. Though these issues could be addressed by the use of DM questionnaires as a complementary assessment method, no such instruments have been validated for use in Brazilian Portuguese. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct the translation and validation of the Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire (MDMQ) for use in a Brazilian population., Methods: The adaptation of the MDMQ involved the following steps: translation, back-translation, expert review and pilot study. These steps were followed by factor analysis and internal consistency measurements, which led to the exclusion of 4 items from the scale. The 18-item version of the MDMQ was then administered to a validation sample consisting of healthy adults, as well as patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD)., Results: The instrument displayed good internal consistency, with the hypervigilance subscale showing the lowest, though still acceptable, Cronbach's alpha value. Its factor structure was comparable to that of the original MDMQ according to confirmatory factor analysis. Nevertheless, the MDMQ was sensitive to both depression severity and the presence of MDD and BD, both of which are known to have an impact on DM ability., Conclusion: The version of the MDMQ produced in the present study may be an important addition to neuropsychological assessment batteries with a focus on DM and related abilities.

Purpose The objectives of this study were to determine if HIV-infected patients treated with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), without dementia, suffer from longitudinal gray matter (GM) volume loss, changes in white matter (WM) integrity and deterioration in functional connectivity at rest, in an average interval of 30 months. Methods Clinically stable HIV-positive patients (on HAART, CD4 + T lymphocyte > 200 cells/μl, and viral loads <50 copies/μl) were recruited. None of them had HIV-associated dementia. Each patient underwent two scans, performed in a 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. FreeSurfer was used to perform cortical volumetric reconstruction and segmentation of GM structures. WM integrity was assessed using tract-based spatial statistics to post-process diffusion tensor imaging data, and FMRIB's Software Library tools were used to post-process resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fMRI). Results There were no significant differences in cortical thickness, deep GM volumes, or diffusivity parameters between the scans at the two time points. Five resting-state networks were identified in our patients. In the second MRI, HIV-positive patients presented increased areas of functional connectivity in visual pathways, frontoparietal and cerebellar networks, compared with the first MRI (considering p < 0.05). Conclusions RS-fMRI revealed potentially compensatory longitudinal alterations in the brains of HIV-positive patients, attempting to compensate for brain damage related to the infection.

Background: White matter hyperintensities (WMH) are commonly associated with vascular dementia and poor executive functioning. Notwithstanding, recent findings have associated WMH with Alzheimer's disease as well as other cognitive functions, but there is no consensus., Objective: This study aimed to verify the relationship between WMH and cognitive performance in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. The study also sought to identify cognitive and demographic/cultural factors that might explain variability of WMH., Methods: The sample was composed of 40 participants (18 MCI and 22 AD patients) aged ≥ 65 years. Spearman's correlation was performed among cognitive performance (memory, language, visuospatial ability, and executive function) and WMH evaluated by the Fazekas and ARWMC scales. Two stepwise linear regressions were carried out, one with cognitive and the other with demographic/cultural variables as predictors., Results: Only naming showed significant correlation with ARWMC. Fazekas score exhibited significant correlation with all cognitive domains evaluated. Fazekas score was better predicted by episodic visual memory and age., Conclusion: This study found that the most relevant cognitive profile in MCI and AD patients with WMH was related to episodic memory. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of executive functions (EF) components and episodic and working memory variables, as well as clinical and demographic factors, to awareness of cognitive ability in traumatic brain injury (TBI)., Methods: Sixty-five TBI patients (mild: n = 26; moderate/severe: n = 39) took part in the study. Independent stepwise regression models were calculated for EF and memory predictors, with awareness being measured by patient/informant discrepancy in the Patient Competency Rating Scale., Results: Models with EF variables indicated that semantic verbal fluency and age are the best predictors of awareness, whereas models including mnemonic functions suggested verbal delayed episodic recall and TBI severity as predictors., Conclusions: These results are discussed in relation to clinical implications, such as the need to focus efforts of rehabilitation in the cognitive abilities related to awareness, and theoretical models.

Objectives: To describe normative data for the Hayling Test and the Trail Making Test (TMT) in a sample of Brazilian adults, and to investigate the effects of age and education on test performance., Method: A total of 313 (TMT) and 364 (Hayling) individuals with age ranges of 19-39, 40-59, and 60-75 years, and with at least 5 years of formal education, participated in this study. The tests were administered as part of a large battery of a normative project. Individuals were evaluated individually in silent, ventilated rooms at a university clinic. Instrument protocols were scored by trained research assistants and double-checked to ensure data reliability., Results: There were major effects of age on the TMT (Time B, Errors B, B-A) and on the Hayling Test (Errors B/15, B/45), and major effects of education on the TMT (Time B, Errors B, B-A) and on the Hayling Test (Time A, Errors B/15, B/45). Interaction effects were found in Time B and B-A for the Hayling Test and in Time A for the TMT., Conclusions: Age and education were critical for performance on both verbal and non-verbal executive functions.

Objective: This study investigated differences in subcortical brain volumes of SLE patients with cognitive deficits (SLE-CD) and SLE patients with normal cognitive performance (SLE-CN), regardless of the presence of other neuropsychiatric symptoms., Method: We studied 40 patients divided into two-matched groups (SLE-CD n = 20; SLE-CN n = 20), with age ranging from 21 to 63 years old (100 % female) and 14.73 ± 10.18 years of diagnosis. Magnetic resonance imaging exams were performed on a 1.5 T scanner. A neuropsychological flexible battery was applied individually, including reasoning/problem-solving, praxis, episodic and working memory, processing speed, language/fluency, executive functions (inhibition and flexibility), and sustained attention. Z score ≤ - 2.0 in any dimension was considered as a cut-off for being considered to possess cognitive deficits. One-way analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were performed to compare the brain structure volumes between groups. The analyses were controlled for the effects of lupus-related neuropsychiatric disorders., Results: SLE patients with cognitive deficits had significantly smaller volumes in the left hippocampus, amygdala, and the right hippocampus than SLE patients without cognitive deficits., Conclusion: SLE patients with cognitive deficits appeared to have reduced temporal lobe structures when compared with SLE without cognitive deficits. These results corroborate a systems vulnerability model that investigated temporal lobe vulnerability during normal aging and in other neurological disorders.

Biological and cultural factors have been found to have a significant influence on cognitive development and performance in neuropsychological instruments such as verbal fluency tasks (VFT). Variations of traditional VFT, involving unconstrained word production and increased retrieval times, may provide further data regarding the executive, attentional, mnemonic, and linguistic abilities involved in VFT. As such, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of age and school type on the performance of 6- to 12-year-old children in unconstrained, phonemic, and semantic VFT. The VFT were administered to 460 participants. The effects of age and school type on verbal fluency (VF) performance were analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance, followed by Bonferroni post-hoc tests (p ≤ .05). A repeated-measures analysis was also used to evaluate VF performance over time (p ≤ .05). Main effects of age and school type were identified on all measures (effect sizes ranged from .05 to .32, p ≤ .05). VF scores increased with age and were higher among private school students. The influence of age on VFT may be associated with the development of executive functions. The impact of type of school on VF performance may be explained by the greater availability of cognitive stimulation (semantic knowledge) provided by private schools and families with better socioeconomic levels.
