Studying the dynamics of quantum many-body systems is often constrained by the limitations in probing relevant observables, especially in continuous systems. A prominent example is two parallel 1D Bose gases, which simulate 1D quantum field theories through the phase difference probed by interference. Here we introduce a method to extract the total phase of the combined system based on a general principle of reconstructing phase gradient from density dynamics using continuity equation. This approach reveals the previously hidden sector of the sum mode of the two 1D Bose gases. We validate our technique numerically and demonstrate its effectiveness by analysing data from selected experiments, showcasing how our method expands the scope and capabilities of cold-atomic quantum simulators., Comment: 4+10 pages, 10 figures

Spatially resolved relative phase measurement of two adjacent 1D Bose gases is enabled by matter-wave interference upon free expansion. However, longitudinal dynamics is typically ignored in the analysis of experimental data. We provide an analytical formula showing a correction to the readout of the relative phase due to longitudinal expansion and mixing with the common phase. We numerically assess the error propagation to the estimation of the gases' physical quantities such as correlation functions and temperature. We discuss Hamiltonian learning in quantum field theories as a protocol for systematically extracting the operator content and coupling constants of effective field theory Hamiltonians from experimental data. Learning the Hamiltonian for varying spatial measurement resolutions gives access to field theories at different energy scales, and allows to learn a flow of Hamiltonians reminiscent of the renormalization group. Our method, which we demonstrate in both theoretical studies and available data from a quantum gas experiment, promises new ways of addressing the emergence of quantum field theories in quantum simulation experiments., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

The formation of dispersive shock waves in the one-dimensional Bose gas represents a limitation of Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) due to the coarse-grained nature of the theory. Nevertheless, GHD accurately captures the long wavelength behavior indicating an implicit knowledge of the underlying microscopic physics. Such representation are already known through the Whitham modulation theory, where dispersion-less equations describe the evolution of the slowly varying shock wave parameters. Here we study the correspondence between Whithams approach to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and GHD in the semi-classical limit. Our findings enable the recovery of the shock wave solution directly from GHD simulations, which we demonstrate for both zero and finite temperature. Additionally, we study how free expansion protocols affect the shock wave density and their implications for experimental detection. The combined picture of Whitham and GHD lends itself to additional physical interpretation regarding the formation of shock waves. Further, this picture exhibits clear analogies to the theory of Quantum GHD, and we discuss possible routes to establish an explicit connection between them., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

In this paper, we investigate the manipulation of quasi-1D Bose gases that are trapped in a highly elongated potential by optimal control methods. The effective meanfield dynamics of the gas can be described by a one-dimensional non-polynomial Schr\"odinger equation. We extend the indirect optimal control method for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation by Winckel and Borzi (2008) to obtain necessary optimality conditions for state and energy cost functionals. This approach is then applied to optimally compress a quasi-1D Bose gase in an (optical) box potential, i.e., to find a so-called short-cut to adiabaticity, by solving the optimality conditions numerically. The behavior of the proposed method is finally analyzed and compared to simple direct optimization strategies using reduced basis functions. We consider the expansion of wave packets governed by the free Schr\"odinger equation. This seemingly simple task plays an important role in simulations of various quantum experiments and in particular in the field of matter-wave interferometry. The initial tight confinement results in a very fast expansion of the wave function at later times which significantly complicates an efficient and precise numerical evaluation. In many practical cases the expansion time is too short for the validity of the stationary phase approximation and too long for an efficient application of Fourier collocation-based methods. We develop an alternative method based on a discretization of the free-particle propagator. This simple approach yields highly accurate results which readily follows from the exceptionally fast convergence of the trapezoidal rule approximation of integrals involving smooth and rapidly decaying functions. We discuss and analyze our approach in detail and demonstrate how to estimate the numerical error in the one-dimensional setting. Furthermore, we show that by exploiting the separability of the Green's function, the numerical effort of the multi-dimensional approximation is considerably reduced. Our method is very fast, highly accurate, and easy to implement on modern hardware.

We present our new experimental and theoretical framework which combines a broadband superluminescent diode (SLED/SLD) with fast learning algorithms to provide speed and accuracy improvements for the optimization of 1D optical dipole potentials, here generated with a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD). To characterize the setup and potential speckle patterns arising from coherence, we compare the superluminescent diode to a single-mode laser by investigating interference properties. We employ Machine Learning (ML) tools to train a physics-inspired model acting as a digital twin of the optical system predicting the behavior of the optical apparatus including all its imperfections. Implementing an iterative algorithm based on Iterative Learning Control (ILC) we optimize optical potentials an order of magnitude faster than heuristic optimization methods. We compare iterative model-based offline optimization and experimental feedback-based online optimization. Our methods provide a new route to fast optimization of optical potentials which is relevant for the dynamical manipulation of ultracold gases., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

A calorimeter was built to measure the heat from a porous capacitive working electrode connected in a three-electrode configuration. This makes it possible to detect differences between cathodic and anodic heat production. The electrochemical cell contains a large electrolyte solution reservoir, ensuring a constant concentration of the salt solution probed by the reference electrode via a Luggin tube. A heat flux sensor is used to detect the heat, and its calibration as a gauge of the total amount of heat produced by the electrode is done on the basis of the net electrical work performed on the working electrode during a full charging-discharging cycle. In principle, from the measured heat and the electrical work, the change in internal energy of the working electrode can be determined as a function of applied potential. Such measurements inform about the potential energy and average electric potential of ions inside the pores, giving insight into the electrical double layer inside electrode micropores. We investigate signal propagation in a quantum field simulator of the Klein-Gordon model realized by two strongly coupled parallel one-dimensional quasi-condensates. By measuring local phononic fields after a quench, we observe the propagation of correlations along sharp light-cone fronts. If the local atomic density is inhomogeneous, these propagation fronts are curved. For sharp edges, the propagation fronts are reflected at the system's boundaries. By extracting the space-dependent variation of the front velocity from the data, we find agreement with theoretical predictions based on curved geodesics of an inhomogeneous metric. For the past two hundred years, parametric instabilities have been studied in various physical systems, such as fluids, mechanical devices and even inflationary cosmology. It was not until a few decades ago that this subharmonic unstable response arose as a central mechanism for the thermalisation of the Early Universe, in a theory known as preheating. Here we study a parametrically driven two-fluid interface to simulate the key aspects of inflationary preheating dynamics through the onset of nonlinear Faraday waves. We present a detailed analysis of the effective field theory description for interfacial waves through the factorization properties of higher-order correlations. Despite the intricacies of a damped and highly interacting hydrodynamical system, we show that the scattering of large amplitude Faraday waves is connected to a broadening of primary resonance bands and the subsequent appearance of secondary instabilities as predicted in preheating dynamics.

Generalized Hydrodynamics (GHD) has recently been devised as a method to solve the dynamics of integrable quantum many-body systems beyond the mean-field approximation. In its original form, a major limitation is the inability to predict equal-time correlations. Here we present a new method to treat thermal fluctuations of a 1D bosonic degenerate gas within the GHD framework. We show how the standard results using the thermodynmaic Bethe ansatz can be obtained through sampling of collective bosonic excitations, revealing the connection or duality between GHD and effective field theories such as the standard hydrodynamic equations. As an example, we study the damping of a coherently excited density wave and show how equal-time phase correlation functions can be extracted from the GHD evolution. We study Floquet engineering of the tunnel coupling between a pair of one-dimensional bosonic quasi-condensates in a tilted double-well potential. By modulating the energy difference between the two wells, we re-establish tunnel coupling and precisely control its amplitude and phase. This allows us to initiate coherence between two initially uncorrelated Bose gases and prepare different initial states in the emerging sine-Gordon Hamiltonian. We investigate an attractive force caused by light induced dipole-dipole interactions in freely expanding ultracold 87Rb atoms. This collective, light-triggered effect results in a self-confining potential with interesting features: it exhibits nonlocal properties, is attractive for both red and blue-detuned light fields and induces a remarkably strong force that depends on the gradient of the atomic density. We study the effects of strong inter-particle interaction on diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^6Li_2$ molecules from a periodic potential created by pulses of a far detuned optical standing wave. For short pulses we observe the standard Kapitza-Dirac diffraction, with the contrast of the diffraction pattern strongly reduced for very large interactions due to interaction dependent loss processes. For longer pulses diffraction shows the characteristic for matter waves impinging on an array of tubes and coherent channeling transport. We observe a slowing down of the time evolution governing the population of the momentum modes caused by the strong atom interaction. A simple physical explanation of that slowing down is the phase shift caused by the self-interaction of the forming matter wave patterns inside the standing light wave. Simple 1D mean field simulations qualitatively capture the phenomenon, however to quantitatively reproduce the experimental results the molecular scattering length has to be multiplied by factor of 4.2. In addition, two contributions to interaction-dependent degradation of the coherent diffraction patterns were identified: (i) in-trap loss of molecules during the lattice pulse, which involves dissociation of Feshbach molecules into free atoms, as confirmed by radio-frequency spectroscopy and (ii) collisions between different momentum modes during separation. This was confirmed by interferometrically recombining the diffracted momenta into the zero-momentum peak, which consequently removed the scattering background., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures

Vortices and black holes set the scene for many interesting dynamical processes in physics. Here, we study the dynamical instability of quantised vortices and rotational superradiance around rotating black holes, illustrating in the process that the same physics is at play in these two seemingly disparate phenomena. We also compare the instability of the vortex to the black hole bomb instability, which occurs for massive scalar fields in the Kerr spacetime. Taking inspiration from the analogy between black hole bomb modes and the hydrogen spectrum, the vortex instability is compared with nuclear resonances involved in $\alpha$-decay., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures

We show that the dynamical instability of quantum vortices with more than a single quantum of angular momentum results from a superradiant bound state inside the vortex core. Our conclusion is supported by an analytic WKB calculation and numerical simulations of both linearised and fully non-linear equations of motion for a doubly-quantised vortex at the centre of a circular bucket trap. In the late stage of the instability, we reveal a striking novel behaviour of the system in the non-linear regime. Contrary to expectation, in the absence of dissipation the system never enters the regime of two well-separated phase defects described by Hamiltonian vortex dynamics. Instead, the separation between the two defects undergoes modulations which never exceed a few healing lengths, in which compressible kinetic energy and incompressible kinetic energy are exchanged. This suggests that, under the right conditions, pairs of vortices may be able to form meta-stable bound states., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We investigate wave-vortex interaction emerging from an expanding compact vortex cluster in a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate. We adapt techniques developed for compact gravitational objects to derive the characteristic modes of the wave-vortex interaction perturbatively around an effective vortex flow field. We demonstrate the existence of orbits or sound-rings, in analogy to gravitational light-rings, and compute the characteristic spectrum for the out-of-equilibrium vortex cluster. The spectrum obtained from numerical simulations of a stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation exhibiting an expanding vortex cluster is in excellent agreement with analytical predictions. Our findings are relevant for 2d-quantum turbulence, the semi-classical limit around fluid flows, and rotating compact objects exhibiting discrete circulation., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We present a detailed analysis of the relaxation dynamics in an extended bosonic Josephson junction. We show that stochastic classical field simulations using Gross-Pitaevskii equations in three spatial dimensions reproduce the main experimental findings of M. Pigneur et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 173601 (2018). We give an analytic solution describing the short time evolution through multimode dephasing. For longer times, the observed relaxation to a phase locked state is caused by nonlinear dynamics beyond the sine-Gordon model, induced by the longitudinal confinement potential and persisting even at zero temperature. Finally, we analyze different experimentally relevant trapping geometries to mitigate these effects. The Unruh effect states that a uniformly linearly accelerated observer with proper acceleration $a$ experiences Minkowski vacuum as a thermal state in the temperature $T_{\text{lin}} = a/(2\pi)$, operationally measurable via the detailed balance condition between excitation and de-excitation probabilities. An observer in uniform circular motion experiences a similar Unruh-type temperature $T_{\text{circ}}$, operationally measurable via the detailed balance condition, but $T_{\text{circ}}$ depends not just on the proper acceleration but also on the orbital radius and on the excitation energy. We establish analytic results for $T_{\text{circ}}$ for a massless scalar field in $3+1$ and $2+1$ spacetime dimensions in several asymptotic regions of the parameter space, and we give numerical results in the interpolating regions. In the ultrarelativistic limit, we verify that in $3+1$ dimensions $T_{\text{circ}}$ is of the order of $T_{\text{lin}}$ uniformly in the energy, as previously found by Unruh, but in $2+1$ dimensions $T_{\text{circ}}$ is significantly lower at low energies. We translate these results to an analogue spacetime nonrelativistic field theory in which the circular acceleration effects may become experimentally testable in the near future. We establish in particular that the circular motion analogue Unruh temperature grows arbitrarily large in the near-sonic limit, encouragingly for the experimental prospects, but the growth is weaker in effective spacetime dimension $2+1$ than in $3+1$., Comment: 33 pages. v4: typo in (3.7) corrected

The Unruh effect predicts a thermal response for an accelerated detector moving through the vacuum. Here we propose an interferometric scheme to observe an analogue of the circular Unruh effect using a localized laser coupled to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). Quantum fluctuations in the condensate are governed by an effective relativistic field theory, and as demonstrated, the coupled laser field acts as an effective Unruh-DeWitt detector thereof. The effective speed of light is lowered by 12 orders of magnitude to the sound velocity in the BEC. For detectors traveling close to the sound speed, observation of the Unruh effect in the analogue system becomes experimentally feasible., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

Quantum field theory is a powerful tool to describe the relevant physics governing complex quantum many-body systems. Here we develop a general pathway to extract the irreducible building blocks of quantum field theoretical descriptions and its parameters purely from experimental data. This is accomplished by extracting the one-particle irreducible (1PI) vertices from which one can construct all observables. To match the capabilities of experimental techniques used in quantum simulation experiments, our approach employs a formulation of quantum field theory based on equal-time correlation functions only. We illustrate our procedure by applying it to the quantum sine-Gordon model in thermal equilibrium. The theoretical foundations are illustrated by estimating the irreducible vertices at equal times both analytically and using numerical simulations. We then demonstrate explicitly how to extract these quantities from an experiment where we quantum simulate the sine-Gordon model by two tunnel-coupled superfluids. We extract the full two-point function and the interaction vertex (four-point function) and their variation with momentum, encoding the `running' of the couplings. The measured 1PI vertices are compared to the theoretical estimates, verifying our procedure. Our work opens new ways of addressing fundamental questions in quantum field theory, which are relevant in high-energy and condensed matter physics, and in taking quantum phenomena from fundamental science to practical technology., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. Imaging techniques is widely used for medical diagnostics. This leads in some cases to a real bottleneck when there is a lack of medical practitioners and the images have to be manually processed. In such a situation there is a need to reduce the amount of manual work by automating part of the analysis. In this article, we investigate the potential of a machine learning algorithm for medical image processing by computing a topological invariant classifier. First, we select retrospectively from our database of postmortem computed tomography images of rib fractures. The images are prepared by applying a rib unfolding tool that flattens the rib cage to form a two-dimensional projection. We compare the results of our analysis with two independent convolutional neural network models. In the case of the neural network model, we obtain an $F_1$ Score of 0.73. To access the performance of our classifier, we compute the relative proportion of images that were not shared between the two classes. We provide experimental evidence of universal dynamics far from equilibrium during the relaxation of an isolated one-dimensional Bose gas. Following a rapid cooling quench, the system exhibits universal scaling in time and space, associated with the approach of a non-thermal fixed point. The time evolution within the scaling period is described by a single universal function and scaling exponent, independent of the specifics of the initial state. Our results provide a quantum simulation in a regime, where to date no theoretical predictions are available. This constitutes a crucial step in the verification of universality far from equilibrium. Web spaces, wide web spaces and worldwide web spaces (alias C-spaces) provide useful generalizations of continuous domains. We present new characterizations of such spaces and their patch spaces, obtained by joining the original topology with a second topology having the dual specialization order; these patch spaces possess good convexity and separation properties and determine the original web spaces. The category of C-spaces is concretely isomorphic to the category of fan spaces; these are certain quasi-ordered spaces having neighborhood bases of fans, obtained by deleting a finite number of principal dual ideals from a principal dual ideal. Our approach has useful consequences for domain theory, because the T$_0$ web spaces are exactly the generalized Scott spaces of locally approximating ideal extensions, and the T$_0$ C-spaces are exactly the generalized Scott spaces of globally approximating and interpolating ideal extensions. We extend the characterization of continuous lattices as meet-continuous lattices with T$_2$ Lawson topology and the Fundamental Theorem of Compact Semilattices to non-complete posets. We establish formulas for the number of all downsets (or equivalently, of all antichains) of a finite poset P. Then, using these numbers, we determine recursively and explicitly the number of all posets having a fixed set of minimal points and inducing the poset P on the non- minimal points. It turns out that these counting functions are closely related to a collection of downset numbers of certain subposets. Since any function of that kind is an exponential sum (with the number of minimal points as exponent), we call it the exponential function of the poset. Some linear equations, divisibility relations, upper and lower bounds, and asymptotical equalities for the counting functions are deduced.
