Marketers commonly use consensus cues about others' behavioral choices ("best seller") or their attitudes ("top rated") when labeling products. This article suggests that the effectiveness of these types of cues may differ across cultures in ways that carry implications for marketing practice. Prior research shows that in contexts that give rise to an interdependent cultural self-construal, choices are often responsive to social expectations rather than personal preferences. We propose that, because interdependents expect such behavioral conformity, cues that convey consensus about others' choices may be less diagnostic and, thus, less persuasive than cues that convey consensus about others' attitudes. Five studies examining cultural self-construal in multiple ways, along with two cross-national industry datasets, offer evidence consistent with this reasoning, suggesting that, among interdependents, behavioral consensus cues can actually be less effective than attitudinal ones, reducing persuasion and willingness to pay. This study investigated fiction readers' motivations for reading, their relevant needs regarding the fiction attributes, and their expectations for future fiction recommendation services. Seventy-six participants shared their fiction search and reading experiences through an open-ended, free-writing-style online survey. Findings show that readers' motivations (a sense of connection, comfort and safety, diverse selection, escapism, coping with stressful circumstances) and corresponding fiction elements (e.g., author's background information, themes, mood) were closely related to the situations or contexts that readers experienced, especially so for stress stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The continuous trinity model (CTM) of brand associations integrates 50 years of consumer learning research with recent conceptualizations of consciousness. Three types of brand associations are proposed at the representational level (expectations, meaning, and affect), corresponding to three types of learning at the process level (predictive learning, referential learning, and direct affect transfer). A core proposition derived from research on automaticity holds that the operating conditions of the learning processes vary on a continuum from mostly System 2 for predictive learning to mostly System 1 for direct affect transfer, with referential learning as a mix of the two. The CTM aims to bring clarity and structure to a complex literature by highlighting the web of interrelations between operating principles ("what" brand associations are learned), operating processes ("how" brand associations are learned), and operating conditions ("when" brand associations are learned). For consumer and learning researchers, the CTM outlines an agenda for future research and guidelines to improve conceptual and methodological clarity. For brand managers, the CTM provides tactical recommendations (a "toolkit") for structuring advertising campaigns to create desired brand associations and strategic recommendations for managing brand partnerships. This study examines minor league baseball players' future-oriented labor by interviewing 44 baseball players and collecting data on 8,000 minor league baseball players' careers. Minor league baseball players' expectations of reaching Major League Baseball impacted how they evaluated their work in the present, leading them to tolerate unfair pay and working conditions. We show that players' expectations of reaching Major League Baseball were moderately unrealistic, partly due to managerial practices encouraging unrealistic expectations. This study contributes to labor research by showing that future-oriented labor ideology is based on unrealistic expectations that employers can promote to create opportunities for future status coercion. This research reveals how a fundamental and pervasive psychological state, feeling powerful, asymmetrically impacts consumers' construction of and response to communications. For senders, power reduces consumers' need-for-justification and lowers the degree of support they seek and use to construct their communications. This lowered degree of support is evidenced by reduced information search, the use of fewer rational-based arguments, and a greater reliance on more concise language. In contrast, for receivers, power increases consumers' expectations for others to justify their positions. As a result, high-power receivers require a greater degree of support in communications from others. Based on a need-for-justification mechanism, the current work derives and demonstrates theoretically driven boundary conditions (e.g. attenuation when a heightened need-for-justification or support already exists) of this relationship. Together, these results provide new insights into how power influences consumers' need-for-justification and how this need affects the ways that consumers construct and respond to communications. Fit plays a key role in organizational entry decisions. However, selecting staff based on their anticipated fit is vulnerable to bias, potentially leading to inequality, stratification, and polarization. First, we focus on person–organization fit and critically examine arguments for and against the hegemonic perspective that selecting for person–organization fit is an effective, responsible, and ethically appropriate approach. This is a controversial subject with bifurcated positions. On the one hand, there should be benefits for employers and employees, such as increased performance, productivity, motivation, and engagement. On the other hand, there are some potentially major downsides, such as subjective bias, reduced diversity, and fears that greater homogeneity will bring about organizational dysfunction. We reveal that two forms of fit, organizational fit and interpersonal fit, have been conflated, and recommend disaggregating them. Second, we critically examine person–job fit and demonstrate that it too has both positive and negative sides. We produce a consolidated version of these different elements of "selecting for fit" that integrates the various literatures and informs policy. We advance five practical recommendations to improve the use of fit in personnel selection that help to realize its inclusive promise and minimize its deleterious effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic may make people feel that they are likely to die in the near future. This study investigates how COVID-19 influences subjective mortality expectations and savings behaviour. We conducted a questionnaire survey in Japan with 2500 individuals, aged 20–79 years, who were working or whose spouses were working in January 2021. We empirically analysed the effect of an increase in subjective mortality on savings using the questionnaire response data. According to the questionnaire aggregation 33% of the respondents perceived an increase in the possibility of death because of COVID-19. Our empirical results, based on an instrumental variable method that considers the endogeneity of subjective mortality, show that increases in subjective mortality expectations due to COVID-19 have decreased savings. Therefore, the pandemic has decreased individuals' motivation for saving, to a certain extent, owing to their heightened subjective mortality. One marker of expertise in sport is athletes' ability to anticipate future events. In the 4 × 100 m relay, these anticipation skills are an essential asset for initiating their run at the right time. However, no study has focused on describing the underlying perceptual‐motor processes involved. Virtual reality provides powerful tools to describe and understand these processes, overcoming the drastic constraints encountered in the real world. Nineteen athletes from the French national teams were immersed in a digital replica of the Stade de France and confronted with digital twins of potential partners based on motion capture. Their task was to initiate their run exactly when their virtual partner passed over a go‐mark placed on the ground. The timing of different body motor events and visual behavior were measured and analyzed. Results showed that the execution of this highly constrained task is the result of a significant reduction in the variability of motor events preceding the start. These findings reveal the implementation of a perceptual‐motor dialog until the initiation of the run. This study is a first step toward understanding the mechanisms underlying anticipation skills in the 4 × 100 m relay; it constitutes a preliminary step to the deployment of VR training protocols. This study investigates the factors influencing user resistance to e-health services among older adults, focusing on the role of information inequality, digital distrust, low self-efficacy, perceived risk, and social influence. Structured questionnaires were used to gather data from 301 older adult participants, and the structural equation modeling method was used to analyze the results. The results show that digital distrust, perceived risk, and user resistance have a significant positive relationship, underscoring the significance of resolving trust and risk concerns in e-health interventions. The study also finds that the association between digital distrust and user resistance is moderated by anticipated regret, indicating that people who anticipate regretting not adopting electronic health services are less likely to oppose digital technologies despite their distrust. Surprisingly, the study did not find support for the hypothesized relationship between information inequality and user resistance, indicating the need for further exploration of this complex relationship. We show that learners generalized more broadly around the learned stimulus when they expected more variability between the learning set and the generalization set, as well as within the generalization set. Experiments 1 and 3 used a predictive learning task and demonstrated border perceptual generalization both when expected variability was manipulated explicitly via instructions (Experiment 1), and implicitly by increasing temporal distance to the anticipated application of learning (Experiment 3). Experiment 2 showed that expecting to apply learning in the more distant future increases expected variability in the generalization set. We explain the relation between expected variability and generalization as an accuracy-applicability trade-off: when learners anticipate more variable generalization targets, they "cast a wider net" during learning, by attributing the outcome to a broader range of stimuli. The extant research on misinformation correction largely emphasizes institutional-approach-based fact-checking practices while underestimating laypeople's potential to correct misinformation. By incorporating anticipated negative emotions into a norm-activation model and conducting an online survey in China, we scrutinized associations between awareness of misinformation consequences, personal moral norms, anticipated negative emotions, and laypeople's intention to correct misinformation. The results underscored the distinct roles of personal moral norms and anticipated negative emotions. Moral norms, which were induced by ascription of responsibility, can further propel individuals' intent to defy and authenticate misinformation, whereas the anticipated negative emotions of misinformation did not play any of such role. Our study revealed a prospective mechanism for engaging laypeople in combating misinformation, signifying the importance of enhancing laypeople's sense of responsibility toward misinformation and the crucial mediating effects of moral norms on intentions to correct misinformation. Prior works note that identifying problematic play is a leading barrier to treatment seeking, contributing to low treatment rates in those with gambling problems (e.g., Bijker et al., 2022; Suurvali et al., 2012a). While research has looked at treatment seekers' motives for treatment (Gainsbury et al., 2014; Suurvali et al., 2012b), the situations or signs (anticipated motives) individuals look for that suggest they would need treatment in the future remains unknown. Participants were gamblers (N = 1,791) from a census-matched U.S. sample of adults who reported no concerns about their gambling. Participants completed questions assessing how much money they would have to lose while gambling to think they might have a problem and what factors might motivate them to pursue treatment for gambling problems in the future. Participants reported a wide range of financial loss that would suggest they had a problem, and higher income men who gambled more frequently reported higher necessary losses. There was little variation in endorsement (40–60%) of 14 situations that may lead them to seek treatment in the future (e.g., felt guilty). However, income, gender identity, and problem gambling behavior were linked to the endorsement of some of these anticipated motives, with some differences in endorsement between those engaging in high- and low-level problem gambling. Collectively, results are consistent with the inference that many individuals may not be aware of what problematic gambling would look like for them, though income, gender identity, and problem gambling behavior may impact their consideration of anticipated motives. A 'vestigial social practice' is a norm, convention, or social behavior that persists even when few endorse it or its original justifying rationale. Begby (2021) explores social explanations for the persistence of prejudice, arguing that even if we all privately disavow a stereotype, we might nevertheless continue acting as if it is true because we believe that others expect us to. Meanwhile the persistence of the practice provides something like implicit testimonial evidence for the prejudice that would justify it, making it rational for members of the next generation to acquire the corresponding prejudiced beliefs. This paper distinguishes between three different types of vestigial social practice in terms of the underlying explanatory mechanisms, and argues that the persistence of prejudicial social stereotypes is most tightly linked not to others' beliefs or expectations, but to the ways that material infrastructure constrains options shapes social outcomes. Given that, the persistence of a practice only provides grounds to infer that most people endorse the corresponding prejudiced belief only if we are in a position to dismiss relevant alternative explanations. In this paper, I introduce two novel treatments into learning-to-forecast experiments: an initial anchor and a limited information treatment. The initial anchor pins down the subjects' initial expectations and makes cross-session results more comparable. In the limited information treatment, subjects can only observe the most recent market outcome. Surprisingly, price dynamics do not differ between full and limited information sessions. This suggests that when making decisions, subjects disregard most information and rely primarily on a few recent observations. Furthermore, regardless of the market's feedback system, positive or negative, subjects predominantly use a single heuristic to form expectations. • Two new treatments are introduced into learning-to-forecast experiments. • An initial anchor can successfully pin down subjects' initial expectations. • In the limited-info treatment, subjects can only observe the most recent outcome. • Surprisingly, having more information does not improve subjects' predictions. • Subjects use one heuristic to make predictions, regardless of the feedback system. Purpose: The aims of this study were to examine the learning of anticipation skill in the presence of kinematic and outcome probabilities information, and to see if this learning exhibited characteristics of Bayesian integration. Method: Participants with no competitive tennis playing experience watched tennis player stimuli playing forehand tennis shots and were tasked with predicted shot outcomes. Accuracy, response times and perceived task effort were recorded, pre, post and during four acquisition blocks where outcome feedback was provided. In both Experiment 1 and 2, kinematic information about shot direction was either present in the training group stimuli or absent. In Experiment 1, left/right shot probability information remained equi-probable for both groups. In Experiment 2, both groups also trained with a bias in the shot outcome probability toward one shot direction on 80% of the trials across acquisition blocks (and were not told about this manipulation). Results: Pre-to-post anticipation performance improved in the presence of kinematic (EXP 1) or both information sources (EXP 2). Pre-to-post improvements in the presence of shot outcome probability information were congruent with the bias in the shot direction trained (EXP 2). Superior anticipation performance was found when both information sources were present. The presence of kinematic information resulted in increased perceived effort during early training (EXP 1 & 2). Bayesian odds ratios indicated that shot direction probabilities and kinematic information were integrated during anticipation skill learning. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how monitoring influences reseller slackness. We try to answer the following: (1) How do monitoring (behavior monitoring and output monitoring affect reseller slackness? (2) What is the mechanism by which monitoring affects reseller slackness? Methodology/approach: The study proposed a theoretical framework using behavior monitoring, output monitoring, and channel conflict as the antecedents, as well as reseller slackness as a consequence. To validate the model, we collected data from resellers across multiple industries in China and analyzed data from 222 valid responses using multiple regression methods. Findings: Supplier behavior monitoring decreases reseller slackness, whereas supplier output monitoring increases it. In addition, channel conflict mediates the impact of monitoring on reseller slackness. Research implications: Based on the expectation that the partnership will grow in the long term, both partners should minimize channel conflict, and resellers need to curb their slack behavior. While output monitoring can give resellers more freedom to make decisions, this study shows that output monitoring can exacerbate inter-firm conflict and promote reseller slackness. Therefore, managers should be cautious about using output monitoring strategies for reseller slackness management. Practical implications: Our findings suggest that behavior monitoring can mitigate channel conflict and reduce reseller slackness. However, output monitoring can facilitate channel conflict, promoting reseller slackness. As a result of these findings, suppliers can better manage reseller slackness by understanding the effects of different types of monitoring. Originality/value: This study makes two contributions to existing literature. Firstly, it empirically examines the role of behavior and output monitoring on reseller slackness, thus enriching the existing literature on reseller slackness. The paper focuses on how illiberal politics in post-2010 Hungary have affected the political opportunities of advocacy groups in terms of influencing policymaking and how the latter have adapted their strategies to this challenge. Based on a series of interviews conducted with the representatives of advocacy groups as well as members of the central administration, the paper investigates the changing patterns of policy advocacy in three arenas: the venues of social dialogue, the arena of direct lobbying, and that of activism. The expectation of the research was that the undermining of social dialogue by the government would spur advocacy groups to relocate their activities into direct lobbying and activism. However, the general picture is of a decline in advocacy activity. A decade of illiberal politics has changed not only the political and institutional environment of advocacy groups but also the general social context. Faced with these challenges, Hungarian advocacy groups have not been able to come up with strategic innovations which would have redefined their objectives and means. As a theoretical contribution, the paper suggests that the concept of political opportunities should be broadened in order to account for the deep social transformations that are brought about by illiberal politics. This article investigates how the credit incentive to engage in questionable research practices (up to and including fraud) interacts with cumulative advantage, the process whereby high-status academics more easily increase their status than low-status academics. I use a mathematical model to highlight two dynamics that have not yet received much attention. First, because of cumulative advantage, questionable research practices may pay off over the course of an academic career even if they are not attractive at the level of individual publications. Second, because of the role of bottleneck moments in academic careers, questionable research practices may be selected for even if they do not provide a benefit in expectation. Multi-vehicle anticipation (MVA) refers to drivers' ability to consider stimuli from several vehicles ahead in their maneuvering decisions, such as longitudinal, lateral, and a combination of longitudinal and lateral movements. This paper provides a comprehensive review of MVA-based driver behavior models developed for both homogeneous and heterogeneous disordered (HD) traffic streams. Studies on MVA identify various advantages of incorporating MVA in driver behavior models, such as superior numerical and behavioral soundness, plausible parameter estimates, and model outputs, and improved model realism. In addition, our findings indicate that MVA-based driver behavior models follow a similar pattern of extending the established single-leader car-following models, considering vehicles that are directly ahead (in the same lane), and focussing on a fixed number of vehicles ahead. For HD traffic streams, drivers' also consider stimuli from vehicles obliquely placed or on either side. Previous studies have shown that anticipation induces more emotions than retrospection, known as temporal emotion asymmetry. However, the majority of previous studies have been confined to Western contexts. Eastern populations tend to emphasize the past more than their Western counterparts and may exhibit distinct forms of temporal emotion asymmetry. Therefore, we conducted an investigation involving Chinese adolescents. Our research encompassed two experiments, investigating Chinese adolescents' temporal emotion asymmetry from a self-perspective (Experiment 1; N = 124) and an other-perspective (Experiment 2; N = 162). Participants were prompted to retrospect and anticipate events that elicited pleasant or unpleasant feelings. The results revealed that, whether from a self-perspective or an other-perspective, retrospection of past positive events elicited greater pleasure than the anticipation of future positive events. However, concerning adverse events, under a self-perspective, anticipation induced more displeasure than retrospection (Experiment 1); under an other-perspective, retrospection induced more displeasure than anticipation (Experiment 2). Our findings provide some support for the construal level theory, fading affect bias, and mobilization-minimization hypothesis of event cognition. Preregistration has gained traction as one of the most promising solutions to improve the replicability of scientific effects. In this project, we compared 193 psychology studies that earned a Preregistration Challenge prize or preregistration badge to 193 related studies that were not preregistered. In contrast to our theoretical expectations and prior research, we did not find that preregistered studies had a lower proportion of positive results (Hypothesis 1), smaller effect sizes (Hypothesis 2), or fewer statistical errors (Hypothesis 3) than non-preregistered studies. Supporting our Hypotheses 4 and 5, we found that preregistered studies more often contained power analyses and typically had larger sample sizes than non-preregistered studies. Finally, concerns about the publishability and impact of preregistered studies seem unwarranted, as preregistered studies did not take longer to publish and scored better on several impact measures. Overall, our data indicate that preregistration has beneficial effects in the realm of statistical power and impact, but we did not find robust evidence that preregistration prevents p-hacking and HARKing (Hypothesizing After the Results are Known). Does low trust in workers discourage firms from hiring? We conduct an experiment in Ghana with real entrepreneurs who have the option to hire anonymous workers for a trivial but tedious task. Shirking attracts no penalty and completion of the task is an indicator of trustworthiness. We elicit employers' expectations and study how they change with random signals of workers' previous behavior. We find that employers underestimate workers' trustworthiness, which reduces hiring and profits. Negative signals lower employers' expectations, while positive signals do not affect them. This asymmetry can help to sustain an equilibrium with limited experimentation and biased beliefs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Unethical employee behavior (UEB), an important organizational phenomenon, is dynamic and multi-faceted. Recent renewed interest in the role of emotion in ethical decision-making (EDM) suggests that unethical behaviors are neither always rationally derived nor deliberately undertaken. This study explores how to integrate the conscious and nonconscious dimensions of unethical decision-making. By broadening the scope of inquiry, we explore how integral affect—the emotion tied to anticipated decision outcomes for the employee engaging in misconduct—can shed light on UEB. We review related literature on affect and EDM and propose a model in which we assert that at a decision point, an employee experiences multiple integral affects that are either persuasive or dissuasive toward UEB. We further posit that among these integral affects, a dominant integral affect (DIA) emerges, determining the nature and direction of unethical behavior. In addition, our model considers the role of affective residue and the influence of other factors, such as incidental affect, disposition, context, and retrospection, to derive propositions. Our DIA model can help managers gain a comprehensive understanding of how affect, characterized by its locus (self or other orientation) and valence (enhancing or harming), determines the characteristics of UEB. The study explores the motivation of consumers to join and participate in new product co‐creation, distinguishing between recruitment before, retainment during and finalizing of a co‐creation project. The research is based on follow‐up interviews with participants in a project covering the initial stages of new food product development (i.e., idea generation, idea screening and concept development) involving older consumers and carried out in a physical environment. Different motivation factors were deemed important by consumers before, during and at the closure of the project. Consumers joined the project motivated by curiosity and desire to meet new people. While performing the creative tasks, they continued the engagement due to the positive anticipation and enjoyment of new activities, as well as positive feedback loops. At the closure of the project, the usefulness of outcomes and the received recognition became important and strengthened the perceived creative self‐efficacy of participants. The findings offer useful recommendations for organizers of co‐creation, enabling the recruitment and retainment of consumers who could successfully deliver creative outputs and complete the project. The study offers novel insights relevant to participatory innovations looking at the temporal dimension of motivation to co‐create and highlights the dynamic changes in salience of the motivation factors. Organizational culture has the potential to contribute to employee performance and wellbeing when it creates reasonable expectations and provides employees with the necessary skills and other resources to succeed. A wide range of stakeholders inside and outside the organization influence performance expectations, which largely revolve around workload (the quantity, quality and timeliness of the tasks they are entrusted with), customer service, innovation, and internal relationships. Given the relative lack of attention paid in prior research to performance expectations as an element of organizational culture, our qualitative study sought to investigate the sources and types of expectations of employees and the impact on their actual performance and wellbeing. We focused on the finance industry, which has received considerable criticism in various countries in terms of the undue pressure exerted on employees and the effects on their stress levels. It was therefore surprising to find that most of our New Zealand participants felt that expected performance levels were reasonable, apart from the extra but temporary demands created by the Covid-19 pandemic, and that their wellbeing was a genuine concern to their employers. The placebo effect is a fascinating phenomenon that has advanced beyond the medical field into the field of sport and exercise psychology. The goal of the present study was to expand this literature by investigating the effects of expectation manipulation on perceived physical, affective, and cognitive benefits following exercise. To address this aim, 77 young adults (Mage = 29.84, SD = 9.83) were asked to rate the expected cognitive, affective, and physical benefits of a stretching program, and to elaborate on their ratings via an online survey. Participants were randomly allocated to three expectation conditions: expectation-benefit, expectation-no benefit, or no expectation control. All participants were evaluating the same stretching program, but read fictitious testimonies and watched videos that were aimed at manipulating their expectations. Analyses revealed that the expectationbenefit group expected higher cognitive and affective benefits from the stretching program than the expectation-no benefits group (ps < 0.001). No significant differences emerged on the expectation to receive physical benefits among all three groups. The thematic analysis of participants’ rationale for their ratings revealed that beliefs about benefits were modified through the testimonies and videos provided. Participants also relied on their previous knowledge or experience about stretching to inform their predictions about the expected benefits of the stretching program. Results from this study expand the knowledge on expectations manipulation in exercise settings, and provide exercise professionals with strategies to maximize the benefits participants can receive from exercise. In a narrative review we investigated teacher beliefs that moderate teacher expectation effects. An extensive literature search revealed that only three researchers had systematically examined (in at least three studies) teacher beliefs’ differences and consequent expectation effects for students. Babad explored teachers who believed stereotypical information about students and showed how that bias translated into teacher-student interactions. Highly biased teachers had large negative self-fulfilling prophecy effects on student outcomes. Overall, the difference in contrasts between high and low bias teachers (those who did not accept stereotypes) was d = 0.92. Weinstein’s research investigated teachers who believed all students should be treated similarly versus teachers who believed high and low achievers should be treated quite differently (low and high differentiating teachers). The average effect size of the differences between these teachers was d = 0.85. Rubie-Davies examined the idea that some teachers believe that all students can make large gains (high class-level expectations) whereas others believe their students will make little progress (low class-level expectations); the average effect size difference between high and low expectation teachers was d = 0.87. Animals can adapt their reward expectancy to changes in delays to reward availability. When temporal relations are altered, associative models of interval timing predict that the original time memory is lost due to the updating of the underlying associative weights, whereas the representational models render the preservation of the original time memory (as previously demonstrated in the extinction of conditioned fear). The current study presents the critical test of these theoretical accounts by training mice with two different intervals in a consecutive fashion (short → long or long → short) and then testing timing behaviors during extinction where neither temporal relation is in effect. Mice that were trained with the long interval first clustered their anticipatory responses around the average of two intervals (indirect higher-order manifestation of two memories in the form of temporal averaging), whereas mice trained with the short interval first clustered their responses either around the short or long interval (direct manifestation of memory representations by their independent indexing). We assert that the original memory representation formed during training with the long interval "metrically affords" the integration of subsequent experiences with a shorter interval, allowing their co-activation during extinction. The original memory representation formed during training with the short interval would not metrically afford such integration and thus result in the formation of a new (mutually exclusive) time memory representation, which does not afford their co-activation during extinction. Our results provide strong support for the representational account of interval timing. We provide a new theoretical account of these findings based on the "metric affordances" of the original memory representation formed during training with the original intervals. The paper presents a longitudinal mixed methods study investigating tertiary humanity students' dropout considerations, utilizing Tinto's institutional departure model as theoretical background. The research question is: How do students' dropout considerations take form and evolve throughout tertiary education? Methodically we have collected half-yearly register and survey data from 2,781 tertiary humanities students matriculating in 2017--2019. Additionally, we have conducted half-yearly interviews with 14 focus students that had high dropout considerations in the first survey round. Quantitative analysis of all humanity students and qualitative analysis of three case students are presented and discussed. The complementary analysis provides an in-depth understanding of the complex interplay between individual characteristics and institutional factors in shaping different students' dropout considerations and decisions in tertiary education. We find that there is a stable share of students with low, medium, and high dropout considerations throughout time. However, although we find stable shares, we identify primary movements from high dropout considerations towards dropout, and from low dropout considerations towards completion, we also find considerable secondary movement (i.e., from low dropout considerations towards dropout). As is also confirmed in the qualitative analyses, there are significant fluctuations in some students' dropout considerations. Dropout considerations are thus malleable and do not necessarily accumulate linearly over time to dropout. Individual students' dropout considerations change repeatedly in interaction with their experiences, their expectations for the future as well as with current challenges in meeting academic and personal requirements. Challenges are often about a lack of alignment between expectations and experiences and how well students and the study programs' norms and values match. We find students who seek to improve this match through personal transformations and others who try to change their study program. Effective control of movement predominantly depends on the exchange and integration between sensory feedback received by our body and motor command. However, the precise mechanisms governing the adaptation of the motor system's response to altered somatosensory signals (i.e., discrepancies between an action performed and feedback received) following movement execution remain largely unclear. In order to address these questions, we developed a unique paradigm using virtual reality (VR) technology. This paradigm can induce spatial incongruence between the motor commands executed by a body district (i.e., moving the right hand) and the resulting somatosensory feedback received (i.e., feeling touch on the left ankle). We measured functional sensorimotor plasticity in 17 participants by assessing the effector's motor cortical excitability (right hand) before and after a 10‐min VR task. The results revealed a decrease in motor cortical excitability of the movement effector following exposure to a 10‐min conflict between the motor output and the somatosensory input, in comparison to the control condition where spatial congruence between the moved body part and the area of the body that received the feedback was maintained. This finding provides valuable insights into the functional plasticity resulting from spatial sensorimotor conflict arising from the discrepancy between the anticipated and received somatosensory feedback following movement execution. The cortical reorganization observed can be attributed to functional plasticity mechanisms within the sensorimotor cortex that are related to establishing a new connection between somatosensory input and motor output, guided by temporal binding and the Hebbian plasticity rule. This study determined the influence of academic stress on self-efficacy and academic performance in Science of Grade 7 students in Timoteo Paez Integrated School, Younger Street, Balut, Tondo, Manila during the School Year 2021-2022. With explanatory sequential method as research design and 93 male and 114 female Grade 7 students as respondents of the study, findings showed that the pressure from study, workload, worry about grades, self-expectation and despondency were assessed by the students as moderately stressful. Students’ academic self-efficacy was described as high. The academic performance of male students in Science was described as “satisfactory” while female students’ academic performance in the same subject was described as "very satisfactory.” Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn: There is a significant difference between the male and female students’ academic stress in this new normal. Male students had a greater level of academic stress in terms of workload. Moreover, there is a significant difference between the male and female students’ academic self-efficacy. Female students had a greater level of academic self-efficacy in terms of persistence. There is a significant difference among the students’ academic stress when they are grouped according to their parents’ income. Students whose parents’ income ranged from 10,000 and below had greater level of academic stress in terms of pressure from study, workload, worry about grades and despondency. On the other hand, students whose parents’ income ranged from 50,001 and above had greater level of academic stress in terms of self-expectation. There is a significant difference among the students’ academic self-efficacy in terms of perceived control, competence and persistence when they are classified according to their parents’ monthly income. Students whose parents’ income ranged from 50,001 pesos and above per month had greater level of self-efficacy. There is a significant relationship between the academic stress and academic self-efficacy of Grade 7 students. Students who are free from stress had a greater level of academic self-efficacy in Science. There is a significant relationship between Grade 7 students’ academic stress and their academic performance in Science. Anticipation is key to performance in many sports. By definition, anticipation as a perceptual-cognitive process is meant to inform action and help athletes reduce potential motor costs under spatiotemporal pressure. Anticipation research has repeatedly been criticized for neglecting action and raised the need for predominant testing under conditions of perception-action coupling (PAC). To the best of our knowledge, however, there is a lack of explicit criteria to characterize and define PAC conditions. This can lead to blurred terminology and may complicate interpretation and comparability of PAC conditions and results across studies. Here, we make a first proposal for a 7-level classification of PAC conditions with the defining dimensions of stimulus presentation and response mode. We hope this classification may constitute a helpful orientation for study planning and reporting in research on anticipation. Further, we illustrate the potential utilization of the PAC classification as a template for experimental protocol analysis in a review on anticipation in racket sports. Analysis of N = 115 studies reported in N = 91 articles confirms an underrepresentation of representative PAC conditions and reveals little change in PAC approaches over more than 40years of research in that domain. Adolescents' expectations on future subjective social status (SSS) may play a critical role in the relations between perceived parental expectations and persistence; however, there is a lack of research exploring this effect in the context of families experiencing greater economic risk. This study aimed to explicitly address this issue. A total of 698 Chinese rural adolescents participated in this study (Mage = 13.32 years; 54.60% boys). The results showed that for rural adolescents with lower expected future SSS, perceived parental expectation was negatively related to persistence; for rural adolescents with higher expected future SSS, perceived parental expectation was not significantly correlated with persistence. These findings imply the adverse effects of high perceived parental expectation on rural adolescents' persistence and that expected future SSS can alleviate this adverse relationship. Help‐seeking is a common strategy for children to cope with daily stress. However, little is known as to how children make help‐seeking expectations during early development. The current study examined the effects of situational stress levels and help‐seekers' competence on children's expectations of help‐seeking behavior and willingness from age 4 to 6. We manipulated situational stress levels and help‐seekers' competence in a social expectation task. Children were tested to determine their expectations of help‐seeking behavior and willingness. Two hundred and twenty‐one Han Chinese children aged 4–6 from a city in East China participated in this study. We found that 5‐ to 6‐year‐olds expected the incompetent help‐seekers to seek support more than the competent help‐seekers regardless of situational stress levels. However, 4‐ to 5‐year‐olds made expectations as such only in the low‐stress condition. These results suggest that both situational stress levels and help‐seekers' competence influence 4‐ to 6‐year‐old children's help‐seeking expectations, and the influence varies across ages. This article asks why Stanley Kubrick's longstanding wish to direct the film version of Louis Begley's 1991 novel Wartime Lies never came to fruition. In Begley's novel, the protagonist Maciek recounts the experience of living in hiding under a false identity in Nazi-occupied Poland. Kubrick drafted a series of quite different plotlines and conclusions for the film version, to be called Aryan Papers, in which Maciek's aunt Tania takes a highly dramatic role in their destiny. The more Kubrick changed Aryan Papers, in response to the pressure of Hollywood expectations and the cultural valorization of active Holocaust resistance, the less it resembled the very work he had chosen to adapt. We provide an alternative psychometric perspective on the empirical statistical dependencies observed between response accuracy residuals (RARs) and response time residuals (RTRs) in the context of the van der Linden model. This perspective emphasizes the RAR (or parts of the RAR) as being exogenous and having a directional influence on response time. Our simple and theoretically justifiable perspective adds to previous joint response time/accuracy models and comports with recent generalizations of the D-diffusion IRT model incorporating person-by-item interactions, and thus similarly reproduces many of the recently highlighted empirical findings concerning the associations between RARs and RTRs. Using both empirical and simulation-based results, we show how our psychometric perspective has both applied and interpretational implications. Specifically, it would suggest that (1) studies of item parameter estimate heterogeneity in relation to response times may reflect more of a psychometric artifact (due to the exogenous effects of the RARs) as opposed to providing insights about the response process (e.g., the application of different response strategies) and that (2) efforts to use RTRs as indicators of latent proficiency should attend to the anticipated interactions between the latent proficiency and RAR on response times. Objectives: Non‐suicidal self‐injury (NSSI) is theorized to be reinforced by its emotional consequences. Mental images of NSSI are commonly reported as occurring prior to NSSI. Based on the known functional properties of anticipatory mental imagery as an emotional and motivational amplifier, this study investigated whether NSSI mental imagery constitutes a proximal and dynamic mechanism underpinning NSSI risk. Method: An intensive ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study was conducted to track the occurrence and characteristics of NSSI mental imagery alongside NSSI urge and behavior in naturalistic settings. A sample of N = 43 individuals aged 17 to 24 with a history of repetitive NSSI completed EMA surveys seven times a day for 14 days. Results: Mental preoccupation in the form of NSSI mental imagery‐based flash‐forwards to the actions, bodily sensations, and emotional benefits of NSSI was found to occur when NSSI urge was high but not when urge was low. Critically, objective cross‐panel analyses showed that higher frequencies of NSSI imagery occurrence predicted greater future NSSI urge and increased likelihood of acting on urge, over and above current urge. Conclusions: Mental imagery of NSSI is not simply an epiphenomenal by‐product of NSSI urge and may constitute a dynamic and proximal novel intervention target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To assess preferences and outcome expectations for vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and corpus callosotomy (CC) surgeries in the treatment of atonic seizure in Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS). Methods: A total of 260 surveys were collected from patients are caregivers of LGS patients via Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap). Results: Respondents reported an average acceptable atonic seizure reduction rate of 55.9% following VNS and 74.7% following CC. 21.3% (n = 50) were willing to be randomized. Respondents reported low willingness for randomization and a higher seizure reduction expectation with CC. Conclusion: Our findings guide surgical approaches for clinicians to consider patient preference in order to design future studies comparing effectiveness between these two procedures. Conscious reportable (un)pleasantness feelings were shown to be successfully described by a process in which evidence favoring pleasant and unpleasant feelings accumulates until one response wins the race. This approach is challenged by (a) insufficient specification of "evidence," and (b) incomplete verification that participants report their truly experienced (un)pleasant feelings and not what they expect to feel. In each trial in this preregistered experiment, the (un)pleasant feeling reports regarding emotion evoking pictures was embedded in a period when participants expected a low-effort task (feature visual search) or a high-effort task (feature-conjunction search). Fitting the Linear Ballistic Accumulator model to the feeling report data shows that anticipated effort was associated with a higher rate of unpleasant evidence accumulation, but only when the emotion evoking pictures were normatively unpleasant and not when they were normatively pleasant. These results suggest that anticipated effort may be one source of "evidence," but only given a certain interpretation of the findings, and that genuinely felt emotions contribute to the emotion reports, assuming that participants intended to react to the pictures, as instructed, and not to the anticipated effort. In this article, I analyse the case of 'modern' central banking's dual failures in effectively containing financial fragilities and inflationary pressures as a cautionary tale about the intrinsic limitations and contradictions of 'governing through quantified futures'. I construct a genealogy of central banks' much-vaunted 'performative art' of governing the economy through the management of expectations in order to reveal a crucial tension between the control of expectations about the future and controlling the future through (present) expectations of it. I argue that social scientific analyses tend to operate with a truncated understanding of performativity that prevents them from developing sufficiently precise and discerning accounts of the mechanics of performative processes to reveal their (intrinsic) limitations and explain how and why they (may) fail. By dissecting the surprisingly complex mechanics of central banks' performative agency, I thus contribute towards a more precise theorisation of how governing through quantified futures operates. Awaiting news of uncertain outcomes is distressing because the news might be disappointing. To prevent such disappointments, people often "brace for the worst," pessimistically lowering expectations before news arrives to decrease the possibility of surprising disappointment (a negative prediction error, or PE). Computational decision-making research commonly assumes that expectations do not drift within trials, yet it is unclear whether expectations pessimistically drift in real-world, high-stakes settings, what factors influence expectation drift, and whether it effectively buffers emotional responses to goal-relevant outcomes. Moreover, individuals learn from PEs to accurately anticipate future outcomes, but it is unknown whether expectation drift also impedes PE-based learning. In a sample of students awaiting exam grades (N = 625), we found that expectations often drift and tend to drift pessimistically. We demonstrate that bracing is preferentially modulated by uncertainty; it transiently buffers the initial emotional impact of negative PEs but impairs PE-based learning, counterintuitively sustaining uncertainty into the future. Names are important signifiers of identity, but for many ethnic minority–group members, names trigger discriminatory responses. Name anglicization (or name whitening) is one proactive response to ward off anticipated discrimination and to signal assimilation. We review evidence suggesting that name anglicization may reduce discrimination (compared with using an original ethnic name), but it burdens minority-group members and is linked to lower well-being. We suggest a solution to this dilemma: training proper pronunciation of ethnic names. We provide a model of how this simple intervention may improve interethnic interactions, signal inclusion, and reduce prejudice in both ethnic majority- and minority-group members. Inspired by role conceptualisations and calls to rethink and reshape activities and competences of professionally qualified HRD practitioners, we examine HRD's role and its associated activities through established versions of role theory. We ask: To what extent is there congruence in role expectations of HRD practitioners and other stakeholders? We study this question by interviewing 71 HRD practitioners and non-HRD managers across 16 organisations in three countries (US/UK/NL) and by analysing their responses on HRD role expectations and perceptions, congruences and incongruences. We map our findings on a 2 × 2 matrix and find that only a small number of organisations see professional HRD practitioners as strategic partners; most organisations find themselves within a more operational HRD role definition, or somewhere 'on the fence', with mixed ideas of role perceptions. Yet, a few organisations struggle to find alignment on HRD's strategic aspirations and how those play out in practice. While our findings highlight the progress that HRD practice has made towards strategic partnership, we conclude that many HRD practitioners struggle to gain a seat at the table. The Method of Moments (MoM) is widely used in Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) uncertain simulation due to its advantages such as non-embedded simulation, high computational efficiency, and immunity from dimensional disasters. The theoretical research of the MoM has been relatively complete, but many of its key practical issues have not been fully discussed, which will result in the calculation accuracy in practical engineering applications falling short of theoretical expectations. With the help of the Feature Selective Validation (FSV) method, this paper analyzes and discusses two aspects. One is how to reasonably select the perturbation, and the other is the relationship between the uncertainty input size and the accuracy. The end-state comfort effect (ESC) describes the tendency to grasp an object with an initial uncomfortable grasp posture in order to achieve a comfortable end posture. The ESC is an example for anticipative processes in manual action. ESC planning is investigated in many studies where this effect is measured in the context of motor observation and motion capture. However, there is little evidence if the anticipative link between different action states, especially between initial grasp postures and comfortable end postures, is represented in memory. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the perception of a grasp posture holding a bar leads to the activation of actionrelated representations of grasping actions. For this purpose, a priming paradigm was used in which prime images were shown depicting either a comfortable (overhand grip) or uncomfortable (underhand grip) grasp posture holding a two-colored bar. The subsequently shown target images represented either a comfortable (thumb-up) or uncomfortable (thumb-down) final grasp posture of this grasping action. Due to the different grasp postures in the prime and target, prime-target pairs represented different types of action sequences. Furthermore, physically possible, and physically impossible actions were presented. Participants were asked to react to the top color of the bar shown in the target-picture, whereby the shown grasp posture was irrelevant for this decision. Results showed that reaction times did not differ after presentation of an overhand grip to target pictures showing comfortable or uncomfortable final grasp postures. In contrast, after presentation of an underhand grip in the prime, reactions to target pictures with final comfortable grasp postures were faster compared to target pictures with uncomfortable grasp postures. The effect was only found for the physically possible action. The findings suggest that the perception of the underhand grip leads to cognitive pre-activation of a final action state. The present study suggests that the association between an initial uncomfortable underhand grip and its action effect, in form of a final action state that is consistent with the ESC, is represented in memory. In musical ensembles, people synchronise with each other despite the presence of time delays such as those related to sound transmission. However, the ways in which time delays in synchronisation are overcome remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the basic characteristics and mechanism of synchronisation with time delays using a dyadic synchronisation-continuation finger-tapping task with time delays ranging from 0 to 240 ms. The results reveal that synchronisation performance improved under time delays of 40–160 ms compared with in the other conditions. This tolerance to the time delay could have been because such a delay allowed both participants in each pair to tap before receiving the stimuli from their partner, as seen in synchronisation with a constant-tempo metronome. In addition, the dependency of the timing control on the partner's previous inter-tap interval decreased at a time delay of 80 ms, relating to the fact that the acceleration and deceleration of the tapping tempo reduced under certain time delays, while the synchronisation performance improved. Uncertainty in the timing of the partner's stimulus could induce greater anticipatory responses, making it possible to tolerate longer time delays in dyadic finger-tapping tasks.
