Objective: To reflect on the methodological approach, mainly on research that takes subalternated, racialized, and colonized groups as "subjects of study." Those are groups that historically have been invisible and hidden in academic research due to acts of violence, epistemic extractivism, and discursive colonialism. Methodology: The fieldwork experience is systematized based on indepth interviews with activists and the reconstruction of the political path of the Network of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women (RMAAD), born in 1992 in the Dominican Republic. Results: The main contributions of feminisms of the global south, decolonialism, and Abya Ayala proposed in a profound reflection on methodological practices in the Latin American context are revealed. These contributions concern understanding the female subject in a heterogeneous, plural, and situated way, and question the idea of a universal woman subject, as well as the intellectual dependence on the global north and the claim of objectivity as part of social sciences and humanities. Conclusions: Preliminary conclusions will be specified to open new remarks and to rethink, reformulate, and problematize methodological practices and the way knowledge is built in the Latin American and Caribbean academic fields. Artisanal fishing is a socioeconomic activity that values the presence of the fisherman, and that underestimates the role of women. However, fisherwomen have a relevant role in different stages of the production chain, such as fishing, processing and commercialization of fish. This study characterizes the performance of women in artisanal fishing, as a way of identifying their main actions, based on a systematic review. The review was performed on the Science Direct platform, using four-word combinations. A time frame was not adopted in the research, so all articles found were included in the sample for applying the criteria and inclusion and exclusion, until the year 2020. A total of 52 articles were analyzed, with the highest publication rate for Brazil, India and Tanzania. The analysis of the abstracts identified five major classes of words, namely (i) Work and Income; (ii) Performance of women in fishing communities; (iii) Role of women in fisheries management; (iv) Fishing in mangroves and estuaries, and (v) Protected areas and artisanal fishing. Similarity analysis showed three main links, the first being about fisheries resources and communities, the second about women in artisanal fisheries, and the third about fisheries management. However, in view of the species described in the articles, the fisherwomen work in the production chain of 40 species, mainly from the phylum Mollusca with bivalves. Women fishermen have a wide participation in artisanal fishing; however, their performance is not always recognized, resulting in cases of invisibilization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rural communities have repertoires of knowledge associated with the use of plants related to various social and biological aspects. The objective of this study was to identify the diversity of use of food and medicinal plants by the Brejal rural community in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Ethnobotanical data was obtained using the snowball technique and semi-structured interviews with 22 farmers. Species diversity and use-value indices were calculated. Relationships among the numbers of plants cited, interviewee age, gender, and working time in agriculture were investigated. We identified a high diversity index, comprising 185 species belonging to 53 botanical families, notably Asteraceae, Lamiaceae, and Brassicaceae. The greatest use-values were associated with exotic species. Leaves were the plant structures most utilized, and infusions the predominant method of preparation. The prescriptions most commonly cited related to illnesses of the digestive system. Men and women did not differ in terms of the numbers of species cited. We found no correlations between the ages of the interviewees and their working time in agriculture. The uniformity of the number of citations demonstrates the shared knowledge throughout the community, covering a high diversity of plants, uses, indications and preparations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pressure for native wood use is a point of great interest for ethnobotanical studies, since these species are indispensable for local communities’ survival in different environmental conditions of the world. In this context, this study aimed to indicate the conservation priorities for useful woody medicinal plants in Darora indigenous community, part of the Makuxi people, which live in the savanna of Roraima State, Northern Brazilian Amazon. Ethnobotanical indexes associated with species ecological data were used, and semi structured interviews conducted among 60 inhabitants (36 men and 24 women) ranging from 18 to 84 years of age. The results indicated that from 33 woody medicinal plants, 24 were also associated with timber use. The conservation priority index indicated that Palicourea rigida, Anadenanthera peregrina, Copaifera pubiflora and Leptolobium nitens are highly prioritized species for local conservation. Our results indicated the need for actions on conservation, beyond ex-situ conservation techniques, such as germplasm bank and cultivation. These actions are necessary to protect the most threatened woody medicinal species which are also used as different timber artifacts by the indigenous population living in the Darora Community.

The objective of the research was to find out the social representations that the mother students of a higher education institution have about correction and punishment. A background check on child abuse made it possible to identify that some cases associated with such event are subsumed under the premise of corrective and punishment actions, placing the mother as the main alleged aggressor. This requires considering the different conditions in which motherhood is exercised. Methodologically, the structural study of social representations, proposed by J.C. Apric, was used. The findings suggest that, although there is a semantic difference between correction and punishment, references related to abuse underlie as a common element. This constitutes an aspect of a cultural nature, which, in association with different risk factors, such as the simultaneity of roles, might increase the risk of negative parenting practices. Este artigo tem o objetivo de analisar a trajetória de criação da Reserva de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Nascentes Geraizeiras – RDSNG, a partir da teoria dos estudos em etnoconservação e das relações entre desenvolvimento, territorialidade e conservação ambiental em populações e comunidades tradicionais. A RDSNG é o resultado da experiência de uma luta territorial: a resistência dos povos tradicionais “geraizeiros” que habitam os planaltos, as encostas e os vales das regiões de cerrados, no Norte de Minas Gerais. Por meio da realização de pesquisa documental, observação não participante e entrevistas formais e informais com os agricultores das comunidades beneficiárias e gestores da RDSNG, pode-se constatar que é na disputa por alternativas ao paradigma do desenvolvimento hegemônico que esses povos vêm se organizando, lutando e resistindo para permanecer em seus territórios e manter seus modos de vida.

O uso de plantas medicinais tem evoluído ao longo do tempo e é crescente o interesse das indústrias farmacêuticas pelas plantas e seus compostos. O trabalho teve como objetivo realizar estudo etnobotânico sobre Cuphea carthagenensis (Jacq.) J. Macbr. (Lythraceae), conhecida como “sete-sangrias”, utilizada pela Pastoral da Saúde, por meio da realização de 10 entrevistas semiestruturadas, com aplicação de um formulário abordando aspectos botânicos, agronômicos e farmacológicos. Dentre as formas farmacêuticas mais utilizadas destacam-se o infuso e a alcoolatura, indicadas principalmente para combater triglicerídeos, circulação e pressão alta. Estudos científicos demonstraram que a planta apresentou resultados para colesterol, hipertensão, diurética, antioxidante e vasorrelaxante. Evidencia-se a importância de estudos que resgatem o conhecimento de plantas medicinais de uso regional em áreas em constantes formações, como as cidades, para que este saber não se perca.

Resumo Os agricultores familiares que vivem em áreas de assentamentos rurais estão entre os diversos grupos sociais da Amazônia que detêm um amplo conhecimento sobre o uso de plantas medicinais. Estudos realizados neste contexto revelam uma vasta heterogeneidade no conhecimento e uso de plantas medicinais, bem como a influência dessas comunidades na diversidade vegetal e nos aspectos culturais associados ao seu uso. Esta pesquisa traz informações sobre a dinâmica do conhecimento e uso de plantas medicinais no Assentamento Rural Paulo Fonteles, estabelecido desde o ano de 2006 no Distrito de Mosqueiro, Município de Belém, estado do Pará. Os dados foram obtidos através de entrevistas semiestruturadas e oficinas participativas e analisados qualitativa e quantitativamente. As plantas medicinais são recursos prioritários para os assentados em períodos que antecedem e sucedem a ocupação. Foram registradas 140 plantas medicinais, das quais, 119 foram identificadas e pertencem a 58 famílias botânicas. Sessenta espécies são nativas do Brasil, sendo 21 com domínio fitogeográfico restrito a Amazônia e 59 são introduzidas. O conhecimento local de plantas medicinais encontra-se bem difundido entre informantes de diferentes classes de idade e gênero. As pessoas provenientes de outras regiões do Brasil reportaram um acervo de plantas medicinais significativamente maior do que àquelas naturais do estado do Pará. Entre as 140 plantas mencionadas, 110 referem-se a espécies cujos usos foram mantidos ao longo do tempo pelos informantes. A heterogeneidade sociocultural e a dinâmica do modo de vida dos assentados rurais contribuem para o acúmulo de saberes e no incremento da diversidade da flora local.

Rural communities that were founded based on land occupation in the Amazon usually have a wide knowledge about the use of medicinal plants. Studies carried out in this context reveal a vast heterogeneity in terms of knowledge and use of medicinal plants. They also describe the influence these communities have on plant diversity and the cultural aspects associated with their use. This paper shows the dynamics of knowledge and use of medicinal plants in the Paulo Fonteles Rural Settlement, established in 2006 in the Mosqueiro District, Belém Municipality, Pará state, Brazilian Amazon. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and participatory workshops and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Medicinal plants are crucial resources for farmers before and after land occupation. A total of 140 ethnospecies were recorded, of which 119 were identified; They belong to 58 botanical families. 60 species are native to Brazil. Out of those, 21 belong to the phytogeographic domain restricted to Amazonia. 59 species were introduced the region. The local knowledge of medicinal plants is well spread among informants of different age and sex groups. People from other regions in Brazil reported significantly more medicinal plants than those native to the state of Pará. Among the 140 plants mentioned, 110 refer to species whose uses have been maintained over time by informants. The socio-cultural heterogeneity and the dynamic livelihood of the farmers has been crucial for the improvement of their knowledge and the increase of the diversity of the local flora. Este artigo tem como objetivos identificar conflitos existentes entre criadores de caprinos da raça Moxotó e os predadores naturais dos seus animais, no município de Ibimirim, Pernambuco, bem como descrever as formas locais de prevenção aos ataques e suas implicações para conservação de raças caprinas e espécies silvestres. As informações foram obtidas através de entrevistas com questionários semiestruturados, complementadas com listas-livres. Foram entrevistados nove criadores, considerados especialistas locais. Foram identificadas 13 espécies selvagens como as principais causadoras de danos para as criações de caprinos da região. As espécies citadas foram carcará (Caracara plancus), gato-mourisco (Puma yagouaroundi), conhecido e designado na região pelos criadores como gato-do-mato azul e vermelho, jiboia (Boa constrictor), urubu (Coragyps atratus), cão doméstico (Canis familiaris), raposa (Cerdocyon thous), cascavel (Crotalus durissus), morcego (Desmodus rotundus), jararaca (Bothropoides erythromelas), onça-parda (Puma concolor) e gavião (espécie não-identificada), em ordem decrescente de importância. O conflito entre criadores de caprinos e os animais silvestres se deve aos prejuízos econômicos causados pelos ataques. Os criadores diferenciam as espécies predadoras principalmente pela forma e intensidade dos ataques. Em geral, a caça ainda é a principal forma de prevenção dos ataques, porém, registraram-se formas locais de defesa para algumas espécies. É necessário que se estabeleça um diálogo constante entre os criadores e os órgãos ambientais responsáveis pelas políticas públicas com o objetivo de desenvolver estratégias para a conservação das raças locais, como a raça Moxotó, e espécies silvestres.

RESUMO: Neste trabalho, buscou-se estabelecer um diálogo de saberes em uma escola do campo, por meio de oficinas que explorassem a diversidade biológica das plantas. Para tanto, realizou-se um levantamento dos conhecimentos prévios de estudantes de uma Escola Família Agrícola sobre as plantas e seus modos de classificação, seguindo uma perspectiva etnobiológica, como meio de promover o diálogo entre o saber tradicional e o científico. O trabalho foi realizado com turmas do 6° e 8° anos do ensino fundamental e teve como suporte teórico-metodológico a pesquisa-ação. Os resultados demonstram que os estudantes têm amplo conhecimento das espécies vegetais que estão em seu cotidiano e utilizam critérios morfológicos e funcionais para categorizá-las. Percebeu-se ainda a significância de oficinas de ciências que abordam aspectos relacionados à classificação biológica, como um instrumento facilitador da aprendizagem de botânica e a valorização dos saberes da comunidade, proporcionando um diálogo entre conhecimento local e científico na escola.

Quintais florestais são áreas ao redor das casas, usadas de forma consorciada, combinando espécies arbóreas lenhosas com cultivos agrícolas e/ou animais. Sua principal função é produzir alimen­tos para o consumo familiar. O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a diversidade e o conhecimento sobre o uso e cultivo de plantas em quintais florestais, com destaque às pimentas no estado do Amapá. A pesquisa foi realizada por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas com 16 especialistas em pimentas em seus respectivos quintais, utilizando a técnica turnê-guiada em quatro localidades da Área de Proteção Ambiental do Rio Curiaú. O material coletado foi processado através do método usual em taxonomia e a diversidade dos quintais verificada pelo Índice de Shannon-Wiener. Foram registrados 5.141 indivíduos, de 64 famílias, 130 gêneros e 155 espécies; nove táxons de pimentas em 21 nomes populares per­tencentes às famílias Solanaceae e Piperaceae. Curiaú de Fora e Curiaú de Dentro apresentaram maior riqueza e Curiaú de Fora apresentou a maior diversidade de espécies. Os especialistas demonstraram conhecer e usar as espécies cultivadas como medicinal, alimentar, comercial, ritualístico, dentre outros, em especial Capsicum frutescens L. Os quintais apresentam-se como uma estratégia viável para a con­servação e manutenção da diversidade local.

In Peru, the growing demand for rural education has caused a substantial revision of pedagogical objectives based on the analysis of new settings and problems in educational contexts. Incorporating local knowledge into teaching practices is an emerging field of research. This study aims to identify and discuss the local knowledge incorporated into high school teaching practices. For this, it presents two case studies of rural schools in the Huaura Province, Lima. The information was collected using class observations and semi-structured interviews with teachers and students. The categories of analysis applied were prior knowledge, cognitive interactions, and behavioral interactions. The results show a trend towards the inclusion of local knowledge, expressly data and facts, and warn about the need for introducing other local knowledge into teaching practices. Os anfíbios anuros são considerados bioindicadores de qualidade ambiental e biocontroladores de populações de insetos, inclusive de pragas agrícolas. Daí a relevância de avaliar o conhecimento de comunidades de áreas agrícolas acerca desses animais e a importância deles para o ambiente em que vivem, já que tais animais são, culturalmente, vistos como repugnantes — essa abordagem é uma das vertentes da etnociência. Nessa perspectiva, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o conhecimento local de comunidades agrícolas do semiárido ao longo do médio Rio São Francisco, estado de Pernambuco, sobre as espécies de anfíbios anuros e a importância destas como controladoras de insetos pragas. Foram realizadas quatro excursões de 15 dias cada, duas por comunidade, entre novembro de 2012 e abril de 2013, quando se efetuaram observações diretas sobre as áreas, entrevistas semiestruturadas e identificação dos sítios de reprodução dos anfíbios ao longo dos sistemas agrícolas. A amostragem foi não aleatória intencional, resultando em 347 participantes. Foram citadas pelos agricultores oito etnoespécies, correspondentes a 13 de anfíbios anuros, além de identificados locais de reprodução e desenvolvimento dessas espécies. Foi constatada importância biológica dos anuros para práticas agrícolas sustentáveis.

Ethnopedological studies have mainly focused on agricultural land uses and associated practices. Nevertheless, peasant and indigenous populations use soil and land resources for a number of additional purposes, including pottery. In the present study, we describe and analyze folk knowledge related to the use of soils in non-industrial pottery making by peasant potters, in the municipality of Altinho, Pernambuco State, semiarid region at Brazil. Ethnoscientific techniques were used to record local knowledge, with an emphasis on describing the soil materials recognized by the potters, the properties they used to identify those soil materials, and the criteria employed by them to differentiate and relate such materials. The potters recognized three categories of soil materials: “terra” (earth), “barro” (clay) and, “piçarro” (soft rock). The multi-layered arrangement of these materials within the soil profiles was similar to the arrangement of the soil horizon described by formal pedologists. “Barro vermelho” (red clay) was considered by potters as the principal ceramic resource. The potters followed morphological and utilitarian criteria in distinguishing the different soil materials. Soils from all of these sites were sodium-affected Alfisols and correspond to Typic Albaqualf and Typic Natraqualf in the Soil Taxonomy (Soil Survey Staff, 2010).

In this paper, we aim at illustrating how a teacher education program searches for the integration between globalized local knowledge and localized global knowledge, referred to as "glocal" by Kumaravadivelu (2006). Having this aim in mind, we describe the Portuguese-English Teacher Education Program at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp), focusing on English teacher education, part of the program in which we are involved. We begin by presenting an overview of the program and some of its theoretical underpinnings. We then comment on the courses that deal specifically with the English language and literatures and, following, focus on the English language teacher-education courses. Homegardens are areas around the house used to form consortiums, matching hardwood tree species with agricultural crops and/or animals. Its main function is to produce food for family consumption. The aim of this study was to assess the diversity and knowledge about the use and management of forest plants in the homegardens, especially about the peppers in the state of Amapá (Brazil). The survey was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 16 experts in their respective homegardens, using the guided-tour in four localities of the Environmental Protection Area of Rio Curiaú. The material was processed through the usual method in taxonomy and diversity of homegardens verified by the Shannon-Wiener Index. We recorded 5141 individuals in 64 families, 130 genera and 155 species. Among 21 popular names of peppers, we found nine taxa belonging to Solanaceae and Piperaceae families. Curiaú de Fora and Curiaú de Dentro showed higher richness and Curiaú de Fora showed the greatest diversity of species. The experts showed the knowledge about the plants and how to use the managed species in areas such as medicinal, food, commercial, ritualistic, among others, in particular Capsicum frutescens L. Uma expedição científica do século XIX contava, geralmente, com uma diversificada rede de auxiliares. Embora a participação destes indivíduos costumasse ser suprimida nas publicações de cunho científica, menções a suas contribuições eram recorrentes nos livros e diários de viagens mantidos pelos naturalistas. Neste artigo, analisamos a rede de auxiliares envolvida na Expedição Thayer, que visitou o Brasil entre 1865 e 1866, liderada por Louis Agassiz, e observamos de que forma muitos membros das populações locais contribuíram para a realização e os resultados científicos alcançados pela Expedição Thayer.

Este artículo presenta resultados de una investigación transdisciplinaria que combina el conocimiento local con saberes de las ciencias sociales y naturales con el propósito último de comprender y remediar los problemas socioambientales de barrios hiperdegradados. La investigación fue realizada en un barrio de la Región Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Como punto de partida, desde 2008 se llevó a cabo un trabajo etnográfico sobre la percepción de los vecinos acerca de los problemas asociados a la contaminación. En ese proceso, se diseñó y montó un observatorio ambiental permanente centrado en el monitoreo de la red de agua potable y los desagües pluviales/cloacales y los procesos de autodepuración en los arroyos que bordean el barrio. Una de las principales innovaciones de la investigación es que la población participa en el diseño del observatorio y, a través de las escuelas del barrio, en la toma y análisis de muestras.Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa transdisciplinar realizada em um bairro periférico da Região Metropolitana de Buenos Aires, Argentina, entre os anos de 2008 e 2011. O caráter inovador da pesquisa reside na aplicação conjunta de saberes das ciências sociais e naturais associados ao conhecimento oferecido pela população atingida para a construção de soluções sustentáveis para os problemas constatados. A investigação consistiu primeiramente em um estudo de campo de tipo etnográfico vinculado à percepção dos habitantes sobre problemas gerados pela poluição. Durante o processo, foi desenhado e montado um observatório ambiental permanente, inicialmente concentrado na análise da rede de água potável e dos despejos pluviais/cloacais e nos processos de autodepuração dos córregos que circundam o bairro. Uma das principais contribuições da pesquisa consiste na demonstração da importância da participação da população atingida, tanto no desenho do observatório como na coleta e análise das amostras colhidas.This article discusses results of a transdisciplinary study conducted in a Metropolitan Buenos Aires peripheral neighborhood. This study combines social science and natural sciences insights with the local knowledge of the affected population in order to better understand socio-environmental problems and contribute to their sustainable solution. Between 2008 and 2011, an ethnographic study on the neighbors' perception of pollution-related problems was conducted. Within this process, a Permanent Environmental Observatory was brought forth, initially focused on monitoring the quality of running water and wastewaters and assessing the self-depuration capacity of the watercourses surrounding the neighborhood. One on the main innovations of the study here presented lies on the participation of the local population in the design of the Observatory and the taking and analysis of samples.

In face of construction of rural development patterns, intentional projects, plans and programs are put into practice by certain social actors responsible for mediating between the local and technical-scientific knowledge. The formation of these actors has been organized linked to a reallocation of political and moral principles, which make the term mediation miss the allusion to dialectical social processes; it highlights mechanistic aspects instead. Thus, there are efforts in thinking about social change among farmers and about proposals for an alternative agriculture, less subordinated to the market and less dependent on technological packages. This requires changes in way of thinking of the researchers, development agencies and farmers. In light of a recent theoretical debate, this article presents some consistencies and inconsistencies identified in social mediation process involving farmers and technicians, showing the possibility of analyzing interface situations as a way to avoid simplifications in understanding the process.

A história da agricultura é marcada pela produção de novidades, na qual os agricultores transformam conhecimentos e combinam criativamente fatores de produção. A homogeneização técnica pretendida pela modernização da agricultura, bem representada pelas diretrizes da chamada Revolução Verde, tem sido associada à consequências negativas do ponto de vista socioambiental nos espaços rurais. No entanto, propostas recentes, que objetivam imprimir novas dinâmicas a processos de desenvolvimento rural, vêm sendo construídas em oposição às ideias difusionistas convencionais. Com isto, têm ganhado espaço propostas e projetos que enfatizam a necessidade de valorização dos conhecimentos locais. Neste âmbito, considera-se que mudanças e inovações estão ocorrendo constantemente e são potencialmente motivadoras para um ativo processo de produção de novidades, no qual são fundamentais a localidade e a ação de múltiplos atores. Alicerçado nessas ideias e à luz de um debate teórico recente, esse artigo traz a reflexão de distintos autores acerca da dimensão teórica do debate sobre a ação de transformação de práticas e geração de conhecimentos a elas associadas.

As terras indígenas são destinadas à reprodução física e cultural, segundo os usos, costumes e tradições de seus povos. A experiência de agricultores Guarani Mbya na terra indígena Boa Vista do Sertão do Promirim foi considerada pela distinção de atributos de solo em três pedoambientes agrícolas denominados yvy porã (terra boa, TB ; terra para o cultivo do milho avaxi etei). A pesquisa de campo (etnográfica e pedográfica) foi realizada em ambiente de floresta ombrófila densa submontana, em Ubatuba, SP. Foram feitas análises morfológicas, físicas e químicas, em perfis dos solos de três áreas yvy porã (Argissolo Vermelho-Amarelo e Cambissolo Háplico) e em amostras de terra, das camadas de 0,0-0,05 e 0,05-0,10 m. A aptidão das terras foi avaliada segundo o Sistema de Avaliação da Aptidão Agrícola das Terras (SAAAT). As áreas foram definidas por quatro informantes Guarani Mbya, que localizaram as yvy porã e as ordenaram pelo potencial agrícola. Na profundidade de 0,0-0,05 m, os atributos teores de argila total (AT), Ca + Mg e Ca, soma de bases, V% e pH definiram a TB3 como a de maior potencial. Na profundidade de 0,05-0,10 m, os atributos foram os teores de H, Ca, H + Al e AT, o valor T, a soma de bases, o volume total de poros (VTP) e o diâmetro médio ponderado (DMP), e o pH. A análise de componente principal permitiu explicar a qualificação das yvy porã (TB3 > TB1 > TB2) segundo os Mbya, em termos dos atributos do solo, e corroborar TB3 como a área de maior potencial para a cultura do milho tradicional. Contudo, o SAAAT não diferenciou a aptidão agrícola entre as yvy porã e, em função do fator deficiência de fertilidade, o grupo de aptidão seria regular para pastagem natural (5n). A incongruência nas avaliações evidencia a relevância do conhecimento tradicional na gestão agroambiental das terras indígenas, visando à sua sustentabilidade.The Indian reserves are designated for the preservation of culture and population, according to the use, customs and traditions of its peoples. The experience of Guarani MBYA Indian farmers in the Boa Vista reserve in the Sertão do Promirim, was taken into consideration by the distinction of soil parameters in three agricultural environments, called yvy porã (good land, land for cultivation of "avaxi etei" = traditional corn). Field research (ethnographic and pedographic) was carried out in a submontane dense rainforest area, in Ubatuba, São Paulo State, Brazil. The soil profiles of Inceptisols and Ultisols were characterized according to morphologic, physical and chemical attributes, as well as in soil samples from the layers 0.0-0.05 and 0.05-0.10 m. The land capability of the areas was evaluated based on the Brazilian system SAAAT (evaluation system of soil suitability for agricultural use). The areas of yvy porã were identified and classified according to the agricultural potential by four Guarani Mbya key informers. Results showed that in the 0.0-0.05 m soil layer, the attributes total clay, Ca + Mg and Ca, sum of bases, base saturation, and pH defined TB3 as the soil with greatest agricultural potential. In the layer 0.05-0.10 m, the attributes were H, Ca, Al, and H + Al, total clay, CEC, sum of bases, total porosity, aggregate mean weight diameter, and pH. The principal component analysis supported the Mbya qualification of yvy porã (TB3 > TB1 > TB2), in terms of soil attributes, and also corroborated TB3 as the area of greatest agricultural potential for traditional corn. However, the Brazilian land capability system was not able to distinguish the yvy porã areas, and, due to the soil fertility factor, classified the suitability of all areas as for natural grasslands (5n). The incongruence of the interpretations of land potential substantiates the importance of traditional knowledge for the environmental and agriculture planning of Indian territory, towards to their sustainability.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi realizar levantamento etnobotânico sobre o conhecimento e uso de plantas medicinais por especialistas locais na comunidade do Lami, situada na região sul de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul. A metodologia envolveu a aplicação de entrevistas semi-estruturadas e excursões guiadas. Para cada citação as seguintes informações foram registradas: nome botânico e vernacular, uso terapêutico, parte da planta utilizada, preparação e forma de administração. Foi calculado o valor de uso e a porcentagem de concordância quanto aos usos principais corrigida para cada planta citada, bem como o fator de consenso entre informantes para as diferentes categorias de doenças consideradas. Registrou-se o conhecimento sobre 141 espécies medicinais, pertencentes a 63 famílias botânicas. O conhecimento dos especialistas é bastante amplo e inclui o uso de plantas nativas e exóticas quase na mesma proporção. As plantas medicinais representam uma importante alternativa terapêutica na comunidade estudada. O uso associado das medicinas tradicional e convencional, bem como as formas de transmissão e conservação do conhecimento são também discutidos neste artigo.The aim of this study was to conduct an ethnobotanical survey focusing on the knowledge and use of medicinal plants by local experts from Lami community, located in the south region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The methodology involved semi-structured interviews and guided excursions. For each citation the following data were recorded: botanical and vernacular name, therapeutic use, part used, preparation and administration form. The use value was calculated, as well as the corrected percentage of agreement concerning the main uses for each cited plant and the factor of consensus among informants for the different categories of the considered diseases. Knowledge about 141 medicinal species of 63 botanical families was recorded. The experts have an extensive knowledge including the use of native and exotic plants almost at the same proportion. Medicinal plants represent an important therapeutic option in the studied community. The associated use of traditional and conventional medicines, besides the forms of knowledge transmission and conservation are discussed in this paper.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a etnobotânica de comunidades litorâneas em áreas de restinga, analisando o uso de recursos vegetais para fins alimentares, medicinais e manufatureiros, além de investigar a atual situação de dois grupos populacionais quanto ao conhecimento e uso dos recursos vegetais locais, comparando também as maneiras com que ambos os grupos (caiçaras e residentes de áreas de influência da colonização açoriana), com modos de vida semelhantes, mas de origem e localização geográfica distintas, utilizam os recursos naturais de que dispõem. O estudo foi realizado em cinco comunidades de duas regiões onde a vegetação de restinga arbórea está presente: a Ilha do Cardoso (SP) e a porção sul da Ilha de Santa Catarina (SC). Apesar de suas semelhanças quanto à sua localização em ambientes insulares com acesso à vegetação de restinga e ao seu modo de vida, existem padrões de uso de recursos distintos entre os grupos estudados. Concluiu-se também que os caiçaras da Ilha do Cardoso possuem uma identidade cultural mais evidente, além de um conhecimento acerca dos recursos vegetais mais diverso e associado à vegetação de restinga, situação distinta da encontrada entre os descendentes de açorianos da Ilha de Santa Catarina.This study aims to investigate the ethnobotany of coastal communities in areas of restinga (coastal sand-dune vegetation). We analyze the use of plants for medicinal, food and handicraft purposes and investigate the current situation of two local populations with similar livelihoods, but with distinct origins and geographic location, concerning their knowledge and use of plants. We compare the way both groups (caiçaras and descendants of Azorian settlers) use plant resources. This study was conducted in five communities from two regions where restinga vegetation is present: Cardoso Island (São Paulo) and the southern part of Santa Catarina Island (Santa Catarina). In spite of similarities regarding livelihood and geographic location in insular environments with access to coastal sand-dune vegetation, there are distinct forms of use of plant resources in these two groups. In addition, we concluded that the caiçaras from Cardoso Island have a stronger cultural identity and a distinct knowledge of plant resources when compared to descendants of Azorian settlements in Brazil; this knowledge is more diverse and associated with the restinga.

Decisions and practical attitudes of land use and management adopted by rural populations are, to a great extent, based on local soil knowledge. This study was performed to describe and analyze chemical, physical and morphological characteristics of sodium-affected Alfisols employed in traditional pottery; and to compare, through statistical analysis, pedogenetical horizons and soil layers, as recognized in soil profiles by professional researchers and potter-farmers, respectively. Fieldwork was performed in Chã da Pia, a rural village in the municipality of Areia, in the Agreste region of the State of Paraíba, Northeast Brazil. Ethnoscientific techniques were used to describe and analyze soil knowledge of potter-farmers who played the role of informants. A comparison of soil categories recognized by farmers and researchers was performed through discriminant-canonical analysis. Soils from which local people obtain a material named "barro de loiça" (pottery clay) were classified as Typic Natraqualf and Vertic Albaqualf, according to Soil Taxonomy. Potter-farmers were able to identify differences between the tillable topsoil and underlying layers from which they extract ceramic clay. Some soil layers, recognized by potter-farmers, were similar to pedogenetic horizons of the same soils, recognized by researchers, in terms of physical, chemical and morphological characteristics. Discriminant-canonical analysis was a useful tool to articulate and compare information related to soil knowledge held by distinct social groups.As decisões e ações de uso e manejo adotadas pelas populações rurais são, em grande parte, baseadas no conhecimento pedológico local. Este trabalho teve como objetivos descrever e analisar as características químicas, físicas e morfológicas de Planossolos afetados por sódio usados em cerâmica artesanal e estabelecer, por meio de análise multivariada, comparações entre os horizontes pedogenéticos e as camadas reconhecidas nos perfil de solo por agricultores-ceramistas. O trabalho de campo foi realizado em Chã da Pia, localidade rural no município de Areia, Agreste Paraibano. Técnicas etnocientíficas foram empregadas para descrever e analisar os conhecimentos pedológicos dos agricultores-ceramistas que atuaram como informantes. A comparação entre as categorias de solos reconhecidos por agricultores e pesquisadores foi realizada por meio de análise discriminante-canônica. Os solos de onde se extrai o material localmente denominado "barro de loiça", dentro do contexto estudado, foram classificados como Planossolo Nátrico e Planossolo Háplico no Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos. Nesses solos, os agricultores-ceramistas foram capazes de identificar diferenças entre as partes superiores do perfil, associadas à camada arável e aquelas mais profundas, que servem como fonte de material cerâmico. Demonstrou-se também similaridade física, química e morfológica entre algumas camadas dos perfis de solo, reconhecidas por agricultores-ceramistas e determinados horizontes pedogenéticos dos mesmos solos. A análise discriminante-canônica foi útil para articulação e comparação de informações oriundas de conhecimentos pedológicos diversos.

Os modelos de desenvolvimento sócio-econômicos adotados pela sociedade humana refletem diferentes formas de relacionamento com a natureza, as quais no paradigma vigente têm levado à grande perda de recursos naturais. Na esfera dessa relação, a conservação e preservação da biodiversidade da flora medicinal torna-se fundamental, pela importância que as plantas medicinais assumem como potencial genético para o desenvolvimento de novas drogas, e como acesso primário à saúde para muitas comunidades. Utilizando a abordagem etnofarmacológica na pesquisa de plantas medicinais, este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar as plantas medicinais utilizadas popularmente contra distúrbios do trato gastrintestinal no povoado Colônia Treze em Lagarto, SE, comunidade que tem o uso popular das plantas medicinais inserido em sua cultura. Sua metodologia abrangeu trabalho de campo na comunidade, adotando o método etnográfico qualitativo rápido. A amostra foi composta por líderes da comunidade, usuários de plantas e praticantes da medicina popular. Baseando-se nas indicações populares sobre o uso das plantas medicinais, selecionaram-se oito plantas que foram submetidas aos experimentos farmacológicos. As plantas testadas no Modelo de Trânsito Intestinal não produziram alteração na motilidade. Já as submetidas ao Modelo de Indução de Lesão Gástrica aguda, mostraram-se efetivas na atividade antiulcerogênica. A partir destes resultados propõem-se estratégias de desenvolvimento local para esta comunidade, que aliem a conservação da flora medicinal à melhoria de sua qualidade de vida.Models of socioeconomic development adopted by human societies reflect different ways of relating to Nature, which, given the present paradigm, have evolved towards great natural-resource loss. Within the sphere of this relationship, both the conservation and preservation of medicinal-plant biodiversity are fundamental because of the importance of medicinal plants as genetic potential for the development of new drugs, and as the primary access to health care for many communities. Using an ethnopharmacological approach in the study of medicinal plants, this work aimed to study the medicinal plants popularly used for gastro-intestinal tract ailments, at Colonia Treze village, in Lagarto/Sergipe, since this community is culturally attuned to the use of medicinal plants. Methodology consisted of field work within the community, adopting the ethnographic Rapid Assessment Procedure. The sample was composed of community leaders, plant users and practitioners of folk medicine. Based on their indications of medicinal-plant use, eight plants were selected and subject to pharmacological experimental tests. Plants tested by the Intestinal Transit Model did not provoke alterations in motility. However, those that underwent the Acute Gastric Lesion Induction Model proved to be effective in anti-ulcerogenic activity. Based on these results, strategies for local development at the community level are proposed, which will tie the conservation of medicinal flora to improvements in life quality.

Identificamos e comparamos a percepção ambiental, o conhecimento sobre a natureza local e práticas educativas ambientais de professores do ensino fundamental em zonas urbana e rural de Diamantina, MG. Em geral, os professores não demonstraram perceber a interdependência entre os elementos naturais e sociais no meio ambiente e conceituam Educação Ambiental como um processo de transmissão de conhecimento. A maioria realiza atividades de Educação Ambiental esporadicamente e desconhece aspectos relevantes da natureza regional e das ameaças que pairam sobre ela. De modo geral, os professores acreditam que seria adequado aumentar a frequência e a qualidade das atividades de Educação Ambiental bem como transmitir conhecimento e incentivar a valorização da natureza regional pelos alunos, e apontaram a necessidade de atualização/capacitação. Não foram detectadas diferenças significativas entre os professores das zonas urbana e rural, mas recomenda-se que ações de formação considerem as especificidades locais das escolas em seu planejamento, para que correspondam às expectativas do público e atendam melhor as suas reais necessidades.

Traditional ecological knowledge - TEK, which is passed orally through generations, is at risk of lost because young people are not interested and the holders of knowledge are dying. The purpose is to map the profile and analyze the academic and scientific research on traditional ecological knowledge, through quantitative empirical perspective. The bibliometrics was responsible for providing a quantitative evaluation of the topic and the integrative review for qualitative, taking the database Web of Science. Brazils position is remarkable, have two institutions in ten, that most published on the subject, and is the third with most published works. It was observed between the articles, methodological problems, especially in the sample but also on the definition of the variables. This work starts a discussion on the importance of Brazil in publications about TEK, suggesting other databases to analyze, and points out the potential of knowledge management for mitigation of the loss risk of TEK.
