Primary ovarian melanoma arising from ovarian teratomas are rarely reported and difficult to accurately diagnose. Cases in the literature rely on a diagnosis of exclusion, and cases of primary ovarian melanoma with pathologic evidence of melanoma in situ are exceedingly rare. We report a case of a 66-yr-old female who presented to emergency department with abdominal pain and bloating. Computed tomography scan showed a 21 cm complex pelvic mass. An urgent laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. Pathologically the mass was identified as a mature teratoma. Within the cystic teratoma, there was an area showing a sheet arrangement of atypical cells. Those atypical cells were positive for Melan A, Sox10, HMB45, and c-KIT, and negative for PD-L1. Melanoma in situ was present in both the squamous and ciliated columnar epithelium. The melanoma was negative for PD-L1, and no BRAF (codon 600, exons 11, 14, and 15) or c-KIT (exons 2, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18) mutations were identified, thus supporting the so-called triple negative malignant melanoma. A thorough dermatologic exam was conducted and only a 3 mm skin basal cell carcinoma was confirmed on biopsy. At 11 mo of follow-up, the patient is disease free and doing well and no metastatic melanoma has been identified. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first documented case of a primary ovarian melanoma arising in a mature teratoma with evidence of melanoma in situ present in both ciliated columnar and squamous epithelium in a patient with synchronous skin basal cell carcinoma. Our case is positive for c-KIT protein (CD117) by immunohistochemistry, but negative for KIT mutation. More case reports are needed to further characterize the disease.

Objective Histopathology of the maxillary sinus mucosa with intractable odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) was investigated and the role endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) plays in its pathophysiology was clarified. Study design Histopathological analysis of the OMS mucosa. Methods Surgical specimens were obtained from 20 patients who underwent ESS for intractable OMS. For rigid endoscopic observation of the mucosae, a 70° rigid endoscope 4 mm in diameter with an attached high definition surgical camera was used. Histopathological analyses of the maxillary sinus mucosa were conducted by light and scanning electron microscopy. Results All the maxillary sinuses were filled, not with viscous, but with purulent secretions. The high-definition camera showed that the maxillary sinus mucosa had gyrus-like appearance. Light microscopic histopathological studies revealed that the surface of the maxillary sinus mucosa was convoluted. Light and scanning electron microscopic histopathological studies revealed that the ciliated cells of the epithelium had not decreased and their goblet cells were not hypertrophic, indicating that the damage of the ciliated columnar epithelium was not severe and they were not injured irreversibly. Conclusion The ciliated columnar epithelium with intractable OMS was not severely damaged and not irreversibly injured. Hence, the pathophysiology of intractable OMS is one of the reasons why ESS is highly indicated for maxillary sinusitis requiring surgery and the treatment results are exceptionally good when the ventilation and drainage of the maxillary sinus is successfully restored after surgery. Background The aim of this study was to report a rare case of nasopalatine duct cyst with sebaceous differentiation. Further, a systematic search of the literature was performed to identify studies reporting patients with intraosseous jaw cysts with sebaceous differentiation. Case presentation A 55-year-old Korean man was referred to our hospital because of a cystic lesion of the anterior maxilla. Radiologic examination revealed a well-circumscribed radiolucent lesion in the anterior maxilla. Histology showed a respiratory columnar and cuboidal epithelium-lined cyst. Transition from the ciliated columnar epithelium to stratified squamous epithelium with sebaceous differentiation was observed. Based on these findings, the final diagnosis was nasopalatine duct cyst with sebaceous differentiation. A systematic search of the literature was performed to identify studies reporting patients with intraosseous jaw cysts with sebaceous differentiation. There were 24 cases of sebaceous differentiation in the epithelium of the cysts including 2 odontogenic keratocysts, 8 orthokeratinized odontogenic cysts, 8 dentigerous cysts, 1 radicular cyst, and 2 glandular odontogenic cysts. However, no case reports describing the occurrence of nasopalatine duct cysts with sebaceous differentiation have been reported. Conclusion This first case report of nasopalatine duct cysts with sebaceous differentiation could provide insight into the diagnostic process of cystic lesions with sebaceous differentiation.

This chapter argues that information in order to provide an overview of the current concepts relating to possible causes and pathogenesis of this disease. Normal structure and function of the lung will first be described, followed by the manner in which the alteration in structure affects pulmonary function in emphsyema. The normal lung is a complex organ originating as an outpouching of the foregut and composed of endodermal epithelium and splanchnic mesenchyme. The normal lung is composed mainly of connective tissue macromolecules, lipids, over 40 cell types, and a high percentage of air. Larger airways are lined with ciliated columnar epithelium and mucus-secreting cells. Pulmonary veins are located in the connective tissue septae between individual lobules. Alveoli comprise the gas-exchanging region of the lung. The alveolar wall alternates between thick regions, composed of connective tissue and cells, and thin regions, containing an attenuated alveolar capillary, composed only of an endothelial cell and the contents of the capillary.

Although various artificial tracheas have been developed, none have proven satisfactory for clinical use. In-body tissue architecture (IBTA) has enabled us to produce collagenous tissues with a wide range of shapes and sizes to meet the needs of individual recipients. In the present study, we investigated the long-term outcomes of patch tracheoplasty using an IBTA-induced collagenous tissue membrane (“biosheet”) in a beagle model. Nine adult female beagles were used. Biosheets were prepared by embedding cylindrical molds assembled with a silicone rod and a slitting pipe into dorsal subcutaneous pouches for 2 months. The sheets were then implanted by patch tracheoplasty. An endoscopic evaluation was performed after 1, 3, or 12 months. The implanted biosheets were harvested for a histological evaluation at the same time points. All animals survived the study. At 1 month after tracheoplasty, the anastomotic parts and internal surface of the biosheets were smooth with ciliated columnar epithelium, which regenerated into the internal surface of the biosheet. The chronological spread of chondrocytes into the biosheet was observed at 3 and 12 months. Biosheets showed excellent performance as a scaffold for trachea regeneration with complete luminal epithelium and partial chondrocytes in a 1-year beagle implantation model of patch tracheoplasty.

Detailed functional morphology of the digestive system of the thiarid snail Mieniplotia scabra is given in this study. The basic anatomical structure is consisting mainly of the mouth opening, the buccal mass, the salivary gland, the esophagus, the stomach, the style sac, the digestive gland, the intestine and the rectum. It confirms to that of any other style – bearing caenogastropods. The muscular structure of the buccal mass of the present snail has been macro and micro anatomically studied. Their structure has been correlated with their function and with the mechanism of feeding. It has been compared with the corresponding constituents of other caenogastropods mainly in family Thiaridae. The esophagus is an almost long tube and divided into three parts; pro - mid-, and post esophagus. The absence of the esophageal pouches and the crop of the alimentary canal of the present species reveal that the present snail is not adapted for cilliary feeding. The main structure of the stomach and the style sac resembles to those described in other thiarid snails. The detailed microanatomy and function of the epithelial lining of the digestive tubules of the digestive gland vary from one group to another thiarid snail according to the mode of feeding and digestion. Thus, in the present style - bearing microphagous herbivorous species the cells of the digestive tubule can be found in any one of the following three phases of activity; absorption, digestion and excretion. Therefore, they may be mainly adapted for intracellular digestion, absorption and excretion. The pro - intestine with its typhlosole, the post - intestine and the rectum have a simple histological structure; each being basically formed of a simple ciliated columnar epithelium with mucus-secreting cells and an outer muscular coat. The anal papilla characterized by the relatively thick muscular coat and long cilia of the epithelial lining.

PURPOSE The aim of this study was to examine the ultrastructural features of the nasolacrimal duct (NLD) openings in the inferior meatus. METHODS Five openings of the NLD in the inferior meati from 5 sagittal head sections of 3 cadavers were studied. Each of the openings were completely excised with 2 mm margins on all sides and transported to the laboratory in 2.5% glutaraldehyde. The analysis was performed using the standard protocols of scanning electron microscopy. The ends, edges, and surfaces were studied along with the mucosal folds, if any, guarding the edge of the openings. RESULTS Of the 5 NLD openings studied, 4 were of the sulcus variety and 1 was of the shape of a fissure. The fissure opening had a guarding anterior edge mucosal fold. The luminal surfaces of the openings were mostly smooth with focal defined glandular structures. Occasional heterogenous areas with prominent and extensive well-defined glands lined by ciliated columnar epithelium were noted. There were presence of mucosal folds on the floor of the sulci of the openings giving an appearance of a subsulcus. CONCLUSIONS The luminal surfaces of the NLD openings in the inferior meati shows mucosal folds reflected on themselves and cavernous vessels throughout the expanse of the openings. Tear rheology at the NLD opening and the physiologic role of subsulci need to be investigated further.

BackgroundDiagnosing the well-known concomitant Rathke’s cleft cyst (RCC) and differentiating it from other sellar lesions are difficult because RCC is and other sellar lesions are closely related and represent a continuum from simple RCCs to more complex lesions. The purpose of this study is to better understand the adeno- and neurohypophysis adjacent to the par intermedia remnants and their role in the origin of the coexistence of these two distinct tumor neoplasias; to assess the incidence in different age groups; to categorize the pathohistological subtype, which can be incorporated in predictive/prognostic models; and finally, to evaluate the current evidence on collision tumors of the sellar embryonic remnant tract in terms of their biological behavior and pathology.MethodsUtilizing the PubMed database, data were collected from 1920 to 2019. Information about demographics, clinical characteristics, and age was summarized and analyzed by using univariable and multivariable models. The same cell type was observed regardless of whether the tumor was only one type or mixed types, and their histologic patterns were assessed.ResultsThe incidence rates were similar among patients stratified into three age subgroups: 40–49 years (24.57%), 50–59 years (19.54%), and older than 60 years (22.98%). We found that various types of sellar lesions, namely, squamous metaplasia (SM) + goblet cells (GC) (HR 46.326), foamy macrophages (FM) (HR 39.625), epithelial cells and multinucleated giant cells or cholesterin (EM) (HR 13.195), a cavernous portion of the right internal carotid artery (CP-ICA) (HR 9.427), epithelial cells with ciliated cuboidal (EC-CC) (HR 8.456), were independently associated with RCC pathological status. These divergent AUCs (0.848 for Hypo as RCC, 0.981 for RCC co PA, 0.926 for CD and CP co RCC) and subtypes of PA (HR 4.415, HR 2.286), Hypo (HR 3.310), CD and CP (HR 2.467), EC and DC and PG and SGR (HR 1.068), coexisting with the risk of a comorbid RCC lesion, may reflect the etiologic heterogeneity of coderivation and the different effects of some risk factors on tumor subtypes. Our analyses suggested that the greatest accuracy was observed for the pituitary adenoma subtype, with an AUC of 0.981 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.959–1.005), while the poorest accuracy was observed for aneurysms, with an AUC of 0.531 (95% CI: 0.104–0.958). We separately analyzed and confirmed the above results. Sensitivity analysis revealed no evidence of systematic bias due to missing data.ConclusionThis study showed that the histopathological changes in patients with sellar embryonic remnant-associated collision tumors showed highly consistent epithelial cell replacement (renewal) (ciliated columnar epithelium to ciliated squamous epithelium to squamous epithelium) or accumulation, and the RCC cyst wall was similar in structure to the tracheobronchial airway epithelium, with progenitor cell characteristics. The collision accuracy between RCC and other tumors (PAs, craniopharyngioma, chordoma, etc.) is different; these characteristics constitute the theoretical basis for the postmigration development of the pharyngeal bursa.

In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of chronic sleep deprivation on mucociliary clearance, which is the primary defence mechanism of the upper airway tract and nasal mucosal histology. Forty-two Wistar Albino rats (250-300 g), 8 or 12 weeks old, were randomly assigned into three groups as follows. The first sleep-deprivation group consisted of 14 rats (A), another 14 of them were assigned to platform group (B), and the remaining 14 were included to the home cage control group (C). For the two deprivation groups (A and B), the modified multiple platform method (MMPM) was used to induce sleep deprivation for 21 days. Tc-99m MAA rhinoscintigraphy was performed to assess mucociliary clearance and the nasal histopathological changes of the sacrificed rats were also examined. Mucociliary clearance was significantly higher in sleep deprivation (A) and deprivation control (B) groups than the control group (C) (p = .037). The ratio of columnar ciliary was significantly higher in group A and B than in the control group (p = .003). The transitional epithelial ratio in groups A and B was also significantly increased compared with group C (p = .04). The control group's squamous epithelial ratio was increased compared to the sleep-deprived groups (p = .003). There was a significantly increased inflammatory response in the ciliated columnar epithelium in groups A and B compared to group C (p = .02). For the first time in the literature, we demonstrated that chronic sleep deprivation has caused a significant increase in mucociliary clearance speed and in the number of ciliary cells.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies that are typically found in the mediastinum or within the lung. Subcutaneous and cutaneous lesions are rare and most likely represent ectopic or displaced mesenchyme during early development. A 59-year-old male was referred by a respiratory surgeon for a giant tumor in the pre-sternal region. The tumor was elastic soft, round and mobile; however, the base was fixed to the sternal area. A CT scan showed round and cystic lesion of 14.7 × 12 × 8.0 cm in size and localized on the sternum. We began the tumor resection while draining fluid from the cyst slowly to maintain adequate tension on the surface on the cyst. We carefully dissected the surrounding tissue from the cyst to avoid rupture, and excised the cyst completely. There was no connection between the cyst and thorax. Unclear yellowish and seromucous fluid totaling 70 ml was drained. We closed the surgical wound inserting a drain tube after irrigation. Histopathological examinations revealed benign ciliated columnar epithelium with goblet cells located in the dermis and hypodermis, and partly lined by keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. Glandular acini and smooth muscle exist within the cyst. The diagnosis was subcutaneous bronchogenic cyst. In this report, we describe an operation to treat a giant subcutaneous bronchogenic cyst 15 × 12 cm in size.

Stem cells derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) conceive cues essential for tissue repair. Mammalian cartilaginous extracellular matrix (cECM) may not be optimally inductive for tracheal regeneration because of the granulomatous, instead of regenerative, responses in injured adult mammalian tracheas. Given the high regenerative capacity of gingiva, it is hypothesized human gingival mesenchymal stem cells derived EVs (gEVs) can induce mammalian tracheal epithelia regeneration. Coculturing chondrocytes with GMSCs produce abundant “matrix bound gEVs (gMVs)” in forming cartilaginous ECM, which are further preserved in acellular cECM (cACM) following mild, short‐period decellularization. The results show that gMVs‐cACM could be well anchored on polyglycerol sebacate microporous patch thus enforce the surgical suturability and mechanical strength. In rabbit tracheal defect, the gMVs‐cACM patch induces rapid regeneration of vascularized ciliated columnar epithelium, which supports long‐term survival of animals. gMVs‐cACM treated groups exhibit proliferation of tracheal progenitors‐basal epithelial cells, as well as, activation of JAK2/STAT1 pathway in reparative cells. This study departs from conventional focuses on tissue derived ECM and introduces a new approach for tracheal tissue regeneration., Human gingival mesenchymal stem cells derived matrix vesicles bound acellular cartilaginous extracellular matrix significantly promote the migration of airway basal epithelial cells and accelerate the repair of functional ciliated columnar epithelium in the process of airway regeneration. This study overcomes the long‐standing obstacles in the repair of tracheal injury, thus providing a new therapeutic conception for the segmental tracheal injury.

For successful tracheal reconstruction, tissue-engineered artificial trachea should meet several requirements, such as biocompatible constructs comparable to natural trachea, coverage with ciliated respiratory mucosa, and adequate cartilage remodeling to support a cylindrical structure. Here, we designed an artificial trachea with mechanical properties similar to the native trachea that can enhance the regeneration of tracheal mucosa and cartilage through the optimal combination of a two-layered tubular scaffold and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cells. The framework of the artificial trachea was fabricated with electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibers (inner) and 3D-printed PCL microfibers (outer). Also, human bronchial epithelial cells (hBECs), iPSC-derived mesenchymal stem cells (iPSC-MSCs), and iPSC-derived chondrocytes (iPSC-Chds) were used to maximize the regeneration of tracheal mucosa and cartilage in vivo. After 2 days of cultivation using a bioreactor system, tissue-engineered artificial tracheas were transplanted into a segmental trachea defect (1.5-cm length) rabbit model. Endoscopy did not reveal granulation ingrowth into tracheal lumen. Alcian blue staining clearly showed the formation of ciliated columnar epithelium in iPSC-MSC groups. In addition, micro-CT analysis showed that iPSC-Chd groups were effective in forming neocartilage at defect sites. Therefore, this study describes a promising approach for long-term functional reconstruction of a segmental tracheal defect.

An index case of ciliated columnar epithelium in a gastroesophageal (GE) junction biopsy identified in routine surgical pathology practice struck us as highly unusual. However, pathology literature, mainly from Asian populations, reports ciliated columnar epithelium in up to 40% of tissue samples from the upper GI tract. This was inconsistent with our pathology practice experience, so we initiated a local review of cases at our Canadian centre. 1048 consecutive tissue samples from the esophagus and GE junction were reviewed retrospectively and no ciliated epithelium was identified. This review included 1000× oil immersion microscopy of 22 cases with "multilayered epithelium". In 971 cases verified in prospective surgical pathology practice following identification of the index case, 3 additional cases of ciliated columnar epithelium were identified. The index case had ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium, resembling respiratory epithelium, and had strong, diffuse expression of TTF-1 by immunohistochemistry. In the other 3 cases, the cilia were located on the surface of a pseudostratified columnar epithelium, a multilayered epithelium, or a low columnar epithelium, all TTF-1 negative. Over a year later, the index case proved to have arisen from a bronchial-esophageal fistula. The other cases were not associated with a fistula. Objective: Congenital pulmonary airway malformation (CPAM) is a rare developmental lung disease. The aim of this study is to analyze the histomorphological spectrum of CPAM in a series of 15 cases. Materials and Methods: A retrospective descriptive study of 15 cases of CPAM was carried out from 2013 to 2018 in our hospital, and cases were classified based on the Stocker's classification. Results: The age ranged from 4 days to 9 years (66.6% were infants). The left lung was most commonly involved (66.6%). The most common lobe was the left upper lobe (60%), followed by right lower lobe (20%). Grossly, cysts measured 0.2–5 cm, filled with mainly serous fluid with few having hemorrhagic and brownish mucoid secretions. On microscopy, single to multiple noncommunicating cysts of size 0.2–5 cm were seen, lined by ciliated columnar epithelium (60%), pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium (26.7%), mucin-secreting columnar epithelium (6.7%), and flattened epithelium (6.7%). Few cases showed smooth muscle (20%) and cartilage (13.3%) in the cyst wall. Chronic inflammation (73.3%) with dense histiocytic infiltrate (13.3%) was also seen. Emphysematous changes were also observed (13.3%). Cytomegalovirus inclusions (6.7%), zygomycete fungus (6.7%), and red hepatization (6.7%) were observed. The most common type was type II (60%), followed by type I (33.3%) and type IV (6.7%). Conclusion: Type II was the most common variant in this study. A careful observation should be done to look for fungal hyphae or viral inclusions.

Anthropogenic factors seriously affect water quality and adversely affect fish populations. Agricultural run-off accumulates in the Mississippi River and the coastal estuaries. Alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula) inhabits these waters and is impacted by agricultural pollution, petrochemical contaminants and oil spills. These fish are bimodal air breathers, and use a primitive lung as an accessory organ. The gas bladder, or Air Breathing Organ (ABO) of alligator gar (Atractosteus spatula), is a vascularized air sac located dorsal to the body lumen. It has characteristics of amphibian lungs. Alligator gar air-breathing organs function to supplement branchial respiratory exchange with aerial gas exchange. The alligator gar gas bladder is an elongated air sac that originates dorsal to the pharynx. Air enters through a pharyngeal-esophageal duct that is controlled by two glottal ridges. The pharyngeo-esophageal duct is approximately 5mm long and is lined by ciliated columnar epithelium that is continuous with the central canal epithelium. The gas bladder has a central canal that subdivides the bladder into right and left lobes. Each lobe is further divided by septa into series of air spaces. The septa consist of blood vessels and smooth and striated muscles. Air circulates throughout the central canal, lobes and air spaces. The thickness of the septa is determined by underlying, supportive striated muscle. The internal surface of the gas bladder is a continuous respiratory epithelial layer that includes mucus cells, pneumocytes, and ciliated epithelial cells. An understanding of the normal tissue characteristics of this air breathing organ provides a baseline for studying the effects of environmental toxins on this organ. Objectives A fourth branchial pouch remnant is well known as a pyriform sinus fistula. However, there has been no report of a fistula composed of the complete remnant of the fourth branchial apparatus. We experienced patients with a congenital lower neck cutaneous fistula which was thought to be the skin-side remnant of the fourth branchial cleft. Materials and methods Seven children were referred to our hospital from 2009 to 2015 for the treatment of a cutaneous fistula situated near the sternoclavicular joint. All of them were surgically resected and their pathological characteristics were examined. Clinical charts were retrospectively reviewed. Results In six cases, the left side was affected. All cutaneous fistulas had a small skin orifice near the sternoclavicular joint and they were situated at the anterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Abscess formation was seen in four cases. Surgical resection was performed at the age of 6 months to 9 years. These fistulas ran deep into the subcutaneous tissue and had a blind end. Pathological examination showed that the epithelial layer was mainly composed of a stratified squamous epithelium. In two cases the epithelium was composed of ciliated columnar epithelium. Recurrence has not been observed in any of the cases. Conclusion The seven cases had a common clinical feature and were a definite clinical entity. Judging from the characteristics of our cases and the previous literature, we concluded that this lower neck cutaneous fistula was most likely a congenital skin-side remnant of the fourth branchial cleft.

We here report a patients with an uncommon extralobar pulmonary sequestration located in the middle mediastinum in a 42-year-old female. Chest computed tomography showed a middle mediastinal mass of 6.5 × 2.7 × 2.0 cm in size, which consisted of some cystic lesions and a solid component. The mass was completely excised via a 3-port video-assisted thoracoscopic approach. Histopathologic examination revealed a cystic cartilaginous wall lined with ciliated columnar epithelium and edematous lung tissue, resulting in an extralobar pulmonary sequestration.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is a distinct non-neoplastic entity originating from anterior olfactory cleft in the nasal cavity, often going unnoticed. Clinically, REAH presents as unilateral or bilateral nasal polyps. Our aim is to expand the understanding of bilateral REAH associated with nasal polyposis with respect to clinical, radiological and histopathological features for better clinical outcomes. Our analysis includes patients presenting as bilateral nasal polyps, whose CT-PNS showed opacity in olfactory clefts. During endoscopic sinus surgery, the lesions in the olfactory cleft (medial-to-middle turbinate) were identified and the specimens from olfactory cleft and ethmoid sinus cavity were subjected separately to histopathological analysis. Six patients (average age 50 years, 83% male) of bilateral REAH with nasal obstruction of > 3 years were analysed. On nasal endoscopy, the polypoid masses in the olfactory cleft and in the ethmoids did not show any gross differences. However, polypoidal masses from the olfactory cleft bled more during biopsy and excision. Histopathological study of these masses revealed the closely arranged round to oval glands (with few dilated glands) lined by ciliated columnar epithelium in mildly edematous stroma, confirming the presence of REAH. REAH is an often overlooked lesion in the nasal cavity, arising from olfactory cleft. The presence of nasal polyposis obscures this lesion, resulting in under diagnosis. The prompt identification with high index of suspicion by the otorhinolaryngologists helps in accurate histopathological diagnosis thereby improving clinical outcomes.

The current study was conducted to address the pathological conditions of uterine tubes of cows slaughtered at the abattoir in Sulaimani, Kurdistan Region-Iraq. The pathologic conditions were objected to macroscopic and microscopic examination of 404 samples of female genitalia collected from slaughtered non-pregnant cows. Collection of female genitalia samples was conducted from February to September 2014 by visiting the Qaragol slaughterhouse twice a week. The organs were observed macroscopically for pathological abnormalities and stained tissues with Haematoxyline and eosin. They were examined under microscope for determination of the type of lesion present in the organ. Among the 404 genitalia samples collected from the non-pregnant animals, 206 (51%) were found without gross pathological abnormalities (with cyclic activity) and the 71(17.57) samples were found with gross pathological abnormalities of uterine tubes. Detected lesions in the uterine tubes included salpingitis 9.15%, pyosalpinx 4.21%, hemosalpinx 1.48%, uterine tube adhesion 0.74%, mesosalpinx cyst 0.74%, nodules on mesosalpinx 0.74%, occluded uterine tube 0.25%, and presence of cysts on the uterine tube wall 0.25%. Histopathologically, salpingitis was characterized by erosion of the mucosal layer lining, while pyosalpinx showed a heavy inflammatory cell reaction composed of a mixture of neutrophils and lymphocysts. Hemosalpinx showed the stromal hemorrhage in the core of the villus like folds of epithelium. Cystic uterine tube, (paratubal paramesonephric cyst), revealed a single layer of tubal type ciliated columnar epithelium resting on fibrous tissue of the normal fallopian tube. It was concluded that uterine tube abnormalities constitutes an percentage of 17.57% and salpingitis is the most common pathology of uterine tubes in non-pregnant cows.

Although several studies have been successfully undertaken of tracheal reconstruction in terms of the maintaining the framework of the graft, most cases of reconstruction failure have resulted from delayed mucosal regeneration. The purposes of this study were to evaluate whether laminin-coated asymmetrically porous membrane (APM) scaffold enhances mucosal regeneration, to compare the mucosalization capability with mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) seeded APM, and to determine whether laminin coating and MSC seeding has a synergistic effect on mucosal regeneration. We reconstructed the full-thickness anterior tracheal defect of 36 New Zealand White rabbits with the APM scaffold. MSCs were isolated from the rabbit's inguinal fat. The animals were divided into 4 groups by the presence of laminin coating on APM and application of MSC [Group I, -/- (laminin/MSC); Group II, -/+; Group III, +/-; Group IV, +/+]. Endoscopy and histologic evaluation were performed and the results were compared among the groups. The results showed that ciliated columnar epithelium was regenerated earlier in groups II and III than in group I. Furthermore, the application of laminin and MSC had synergistic effects on tracheal epithelial regeneration. These results demonstrate that tracheal reconstruction by laminin-coated APM seeded with MSCs is most effective in enhancing tracheal mucosalization, and appears to be promising strategy in the regenerative treatment of tracheal defects.

BACKGROUND The rodent ejaculatory ducts penetrate the male accessory sex gland complex and open into the urethra, anatomically similar to humans. Although the deferent ducts papillae in rodents have been described at the distal end of deferent ducts, they are absent in humans, and their detailed morphology has been unclear. METHODS The detailed anatomical structures of the distal end of the deferent ducts of rats were investigated by the computer assisted three-dimensional reconstruction analysis using serial sections of the male accessory sex gland complexes in rats. RESULTS The present study revealed that a pair of deferent ducts enters the ventral side of the male accessory sex gland complex, runs caudally parallel to the urethra, and then exits at about midsection of the dorso-lateral lobe of prostate. They are composed of mammilliform papillae, called the deferent duct papillae, which dorso-laterally protrude into the duct lumen from intra-ventral portion of the main duct of ampullary gland. The internal surface of the deferent ducts papillae is composed of ciliated columnar epithelium continuous from the deferent ducts, while their external surface is composed of the columnar secretory epithelium of the ampullary glands. Sphincter muscles were not observed in the deferent ducts papillae, while their lamina propria were occupied by many arterial or venous capillaries. CONCLUSIONS The deferent ducts of rat terminated at the deferent ducts papillae that located at the main duct of ampullary glands that drained into the urethra. This study was conducted to investigate whether eucalyptol plays a role in influencing bacterial growth in cigarette smoke-exposed lungs. Rats were exposed to air (control) and cigarette smoke (smoking) in the presence and absence of eucalyptol (260 mg/day). Morphological analysis of lung structures and status of airway mucous production were observed under microscope. Pathological changes of ciliated columnar epithelium in airways were examined using transmission electron microscopy. MUC5AC protein and messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lungs were determined. Application of eucalyptol reduced pulmonary bullae formation and airway mucus overproduction in the smoke-exposed lungs. Treatment with eucalyptol attenuated ciliated cell damage in cigarette smoke-exposed lungs. Bacterial colonies of lungs were obviously lower in the eucalyptol-treated rats than that in the smoking rats (p < 0.01). Treatment with eucalyptol reduced the counts of bacterial colonization residing in the challenged lungs (p < 0.01). Application of eucalyptol not only decreased MUC5AC protein expression in BALF and tobacco-exposed lungs but also suppressed its mRNA expression in the lungs (all p < 0.05). Intervention of eucalyptol benefits elimination of bacterial organisms from tobacco-exposed lungs through attenuating ciliated cell damage and suppressing MUC5AC expression in the lungs.

Background: A uterine cyst is a controversial and rare pathologic entity, characterized by being a benign lesion located in the thickness of the uterine myometrium. There are few reports in the literature, and those that are accompanied by histologic descriptions are even less frequent. Case: A 57-year-old woman presented with a simple cystic formation of 4.2×3.7 cm, located in the midline of the dome of the uterus, suggesting a simple cyst. After complete excision, histologic examination revealed the presence of a cystic structure lined by tall ciliated columnar epithelium without atypia, showing a well-developed muscular underlying wall. These findings were consistent with a cystic uterus. Results: There were no other gross pathologic findings in any other abdominal organs. She was discharged without any incidents the fourth day after surgery. We report the presence of epididymis-like tubules in unilateral renal hypodysplasia in 3 adult men. Microscopy showed dilated tubules lined by ciliated columnar epithelium and smaller basal cells, morphologically resembling epididymal tubules. Small tubules lined by cuboidal epithelium were also present in all cases, with glomeruli in 2 cases. The epididymis-like tubules expressed CD10, CK7, PAX8, and AR in the luminal epithelium, while the basal cells were positive for p63, CK7, and focally for CD10. The smooth muscle bundles around the epididymis-like tubules were focally AR and WT1 (cytoplasmic) positive. The epididymis-like tubules were negative for ER, PR, and WT1. CK7 and PAX8 stained all the collecting ducts, with AR staining some. Bowman's capsule, parietal and visceral epithelial cells expressed CD10; WT1 stained the visceral and parietal epithelial cells. Glomerular parietal cells expressed PAX8 and focally, CK7. Proximal tubules were positive for CD10 (luminal membranous and weak cytoplasmic). Distal tubules expressed CK7, PAX8 and AR. An occasional small tubule was ER positive. Scattered stromal cells expressed ER, PR, and AR. The urothelium of the renal pelvis/upper ureter expressed CK7 in all layers, CD10 in the superficial layers, PAX8 in the basal layers and p63 in all layers except the umbrella layer. The epididymis-like tubules replicate the pattern of the mesonephros-derived normal epididymis in expressing CK7, PAX8, CD10, and AR. This supports a mesonephric rather than metanephric origin for these tubules. The aberrant expression of some markers may be a manifestation of the dysplastic nature of the kidneys.

A branchial cleft cyst is a congenital abnormality typically located over the lateral aspect of neck. A 3 year old boy presented with a gradually progressive painless swelling below his chin since 1 year. CT scan demonstrated well defined cystic lesion in submental region. Excision was done and histopathology showed the cyst lined by stratified squamous epithelium and at places lined by pseudo stratified ciliated columnar epithelium with subepithelial lymphocytes suggesting branchial cyst. Branchial cleft cysts should also be considered as one of the differential diagnoses in cystic midline lesions of the neck, if it’s not moving with deglutition and with tongue protrusion.

Background The purpose of this study was to show the investigated prevalence rate of brownish spots of early cancer under narrow band imaging (NBI) in different sites/types of the epithelium. Methods In all, 125 adults with early mucosal cancer underwent NBI examination. Four types of epithelium were categorized: keratinized thick stratified squamous (type 1), nonkeratinized thin (type 2a) or very thick (type 2b) stratified squamous, and pseudo-stratified ciliated columnar epithelium (type 3). Results The prevalence rate of brownish spots in early cancer of the nasopharynx, oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and epiglottis were 11.1%, 15.9%, 21.4%, 100%, and 100%, respectively. Type 2a epithelium (odds ratio [OR], 76.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 9.26–631.14) was a significant predictive factor for the brownish spots. Conclusion The brownish spots have higher reliability for screening in early cancer of the mouth floor, hypopharynx, and epiglottis, but not in other mucosal sites. Intracardiac bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital tumors, which rarely become symptomatic. We describe a rare case of bronchogenic cyst in the atrioventricular node. A 36-year-old man with third-degree atrioventricular block was referred to our hospital. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a cystic mass at the right atrial aspect of the low interatrial septum. He underwent surgical resection of the mass, and a permanent epicardium pacemaker was implanted. His postoperative course was uneventful. Microscopic examination showed a cyst surrounded by ciliated columnar epithelium and partially smooth muscle, and the histopathological diagnosis was bronchogenic cyst.

Rathke cleft cysts (RCCs) are malformative, benign lesions located in the sellar and/or suprasellar space; they are thought to arise from remnants of the Rathke pouch, where embryonic cells which are going to form the adenohypophysis join the nervous component that will become the neurohypophysis. These remnants may enlarge causing pituitary dysfunction and visual impairment. Cyst content may be a mucinous material of varying texture; the wall of the cyst is characterized by a well-differentiated, ciliated columnar epithelium. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has increased sensitivity in RCCs radiologic diagnosis, even if symptoms related to the cyst are absent, so incidental findings are not unusual; in such cases, surgical therapy is questionable or not indicated. The prevalence of Rathke cleft cysts in children is considered lower than in adult population, in spite of their malformative nature, and young patients are mostly asymptomatic. We report a little series of symptomatic RCCs observed in children during an interval time of 4 years (2005–2008).

With 14 figures Summary The respiratory tracts of seven grey short-tailed opossums were histologically examined. Six opossums were prepared by perfusion with buffered formalin. Opossum seven was perfused with gluteraldehyde. Samples taken from the respiratory passages and lungs of specimens 1–6 were stained with haematoxylin and eosin. A mixture of methylene and azure blue was used for specimen 7. The trachea and right and left principal bronchi are lined with a pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium with occasional goblet cells. The secondary and tertiary bronchi and the primary and secondary bronchioles are lined by a simple ciliated columnar epithelium. The terminal bronchioles and a portion of the respiratory bronchioles are lined by a simple ciliated cuboidal epithelium. The terminal portion of the respiratory bronchioles and the alveolar ducts are lined with simple squamous epithelium. Alveoli are lined by type I and II pneumocytes. Tracheal glands are present in the tela submucosa. The fibromusculocartilaginous tunic of the trachea consists of c-shaped cartilage rings and the trachealis muscle. A lamina muscularis mucosa begins in the intrapulmonary portion of the principal bronchus and continues into the respiratory bronchioles. Bronchial glands are present in the propria submucosa and tela submucosa of the principal bronchi. The musculocartilaginous tunic is localized to the extrapulmonary portion of the principal bronchus. The bronchial cartilages are irregular shaped plates and limited to the extrapulmonary portion of the principal bronchus. The visceral pleura is a simple squamous mesothelium covering the outer surface of the lung.

Two cases of endodermal cyst of the posterior fossa are reported. A 12-year-old girl presented with severe headache and vomiting caused by increased intracranial pressure. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a cystic mass occupying the ambient and quadrigeminal cisterns. A 65-year-old woman presented with dizziness, and MR imaging revealed a cystic mass in the posterior fossa. The two patients underwent surgery for decompression and resection of the cyst. Surgical specimens of the cyst walls consisted of a single layer of ciliated columnar epithelium. The diagnoses were endodermal cyst. The optimal surgical goal is total resection of the cyst wall, but the cyst wall sometimes tightly adheres to the adjacent nerves, vessels, and vital structures. The cyst must communicate adequately with the surrounding cerebrospinal fluid space, and a newly closed cyst space must be avoided, by the widest possible resection of the cyst wall.

Mediastinal bronchogenic cyst (MBC) is congenital, and a result of an abnormal budding of the primitive foregut. MBC is the most common mediastinal cyst, usually located along the tracheobronchial tree, most often found behind the carina (1). MBC can occur among all age group, from infants to adults. Bronchogenic cysts can occur intrapulmonary or extrapulmonary. If an abnormal budding occurs during early gestation, the bronchogenic cyst will usually be located in the mediastinum. MBCs rarely communicate with the tracheobronchial tree when compared to intrapulmonary bronchogenic cysts. MBCs are lined with respiratory ciliated columnar epithelium and filled with a whitish-gray mucinous material, which can change into pus with infection.

Lobo-da-Cunha, A., Oliveira, E., Alves, Â., Coelho, R. and Calado, G. 2010. Light and electron microscopic study of the anterior oesophagus of Bulla striata (Mollusca, Opisthobranchia). —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91: 125–138. The anterior oesophagus of Bulla striata was investigated with light and electron microscopy. In the most anterior region, the ridges of the oesophageal wall are covered by a ciliated columnar epithelium forming large apical blebs which are released into the lumen, an activity that is particularly intense in the oesophageal pouch. In the last two-thirds of the anterior oesophagus, the epithelium is covered with microvilli embedded in a cuticle, but apocrine secretion and cilia are absent. Subepithelial secretory cells are very abundant in the oesophageal wall, except in the roof of the pouch. They have a long neck that crosses the epithelium, whereas the cell body containing the nucleus is embedded in the connective tissue. Large electron-lucent secretory vesicles and many Golgi stacks fill most of their cytoplasm. The histochemical and cytochemical assays show that these cells secrete acid mucopolysaccharides. With the current and future studies we aim to obtain data for the establishment of relationships between morphofunctional features of the digestive system and food types in cephalaspideans. Additionally, the new data about the oesophageal pouch of B. striata may be useful for the establishment of eventual homologies with the oesophageal diverticula of other opisthobranchs.

Objective We have developed a prosthesis that includes a collagen layer for tracheobronchial reconstruction and applied it in a canine model. In previous studies luminal epithelization remained partial or rather slow because of the early disintegration of the collagen layer. We have improved this type of prosthesis by coating the luminal surface with a biodegradable polymer, which serves to protect the collagen layer. The effect of the polymer coating on the epithelization of the luminal surface of the prosthesis was examined. Methods The main frame consisted of a polypropylene mesh tube, measuring 15 mm in inner diameter and 30 mm in length, with reinforcing rings. Collagen extracted from porcine skin was conjugated to this frame. The luminal surface was coated with a polymer, poly (L-lactic-acid-co-e-caprolactone). In 5 beagle dogs the left main bronchus was replaced with this prosthesis, periodic bronchoscopic observations were conducted, and microscopic evaluations were performed. Results All dogs survived until they were killed, except for 1 animal in which pneumonia developed, and this animal died at 13 months after replacement. None of the dogs showed adverse complications caused by the prosthesis. Bronchoscopic observations revealed that the polymer remained on the luminal surface for 2 weeks. The luminal surface in 4 dogs was completely covered with ciliated columnar epithelium or nonciliated squamous epithelium, and 90% epithelization was achieved in 1 dog. Conclusions The biodegradable polymer coating protected the collagen layer and promoted better epithelization. This improved epithelization on the luminal surface could therefore potentially increase the success rates in airway replacement with artificial prostheses.

Congenital bronchogenic sac cysts result from primitive foregut maldevelopment. Although they occur predominantly in the chest, they have been reported as extrathoracic lesions. Bronchogenic cyst diagnosis relies on lesion histology and location. We review our experience on the diagnosis and management of a 39-year-old man with pathologically proven bronchogenic cyst. The cyst was surgically resected. Histologically, the cyst consisted of ciliated columnar epithelium, smooth muscle, and mucus glands, yielding a definitive diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst. This is the 18th case reported in the Japanese literature of a cervical bronchogenic cyst. In conclusion, congenital bronchogenic cysts may occur in the adult necks and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of cystic cervical masses.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is wide discrepancy between common clinical and radiologic presentations of branchial sinuses arising from the pyriform fossa and the theoretic course of third and fourth branchial arch anomalies. The purpose of this study was to revisit the clinical presentations and imaging features of such anomalies in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of institutional and diagnostic imaging data bases from 1998 to 2008 for reported cases of third and fourth branchial cleft anomalies was conducted. Clinical presentation, pharyngoscopy results, and imaging features in all the patients were evaluated. Surgical and histopathology correlation in patients who underwent excision of the tract was also obtained. RESULTS: Twenty reported cases described as third or fourth branchial apparatus anomalies were identified. There were 12 females and 8 males with a mean age of 84.6 months. The most common presentation was an inflammatory neck mass (18/20, 90%) almost always involving the thyroid gland. Most lesions were on the left side (16/20, 80%). Pharyngoscopy showed a sinus opening at the piriform fossa in 18/20 (90%) cases. None of the cases followed the classic theoretic pathway of third and fourth arch remnants. Histopathology showed tracts lined with pseudostratified squamous epithelium or ciliated columnar epithelium often associated with inflammatory changes in 17 surgically resected cases. CONCLUSIONS: Branchial sinuses arising from the pyriform fossa often present with an inflammatory neck mass involving the thyroid lobe, most often on the left side. Imaging and surgical findings suggest that they arise from the embryonal thymopharyngeal duct of the third branchial pouch, because they do not follow the hypothetic course of third or fourth arch fistulas.

Information on the digestive system of the reptiles is based on relatively few studies on some of the now present 7500 reptilian species. Yet, the gap between our understanding of the major similarities and / or differences between the mammalian and reptilian digestive system does not seem satisfiable. The aim of the current study was to investigate the morphological structure of one of the most common reptilian species in Egypt, Varanus niloticus or Nile monitor. Specimens for histological examination were collected from the esophageus, stomach and small intestine of the Nile monitor and pro-cessed for paraffin embedding. Sections were stained with haemat-oxylin and eosin for general morpho-logy. Periodic Acid Schiff's (PAS) and Alcian Blue (AB) staining methods were applied to detect the different types of the mucous contents of the gastro-intestinal tract. Some paraffin sections were stained with Grimelius silver impregnation technique for localization of the enteroendocrine cells. The folded esophageal mucosa had ciliated columnar epithelium with mucous secreting goblet cells, which stained positive with PAS and AB. The esophageal mucosa was folded and the lining epithelium was ciliated columnar epithelium with mucous secreting goblet cells, which stained positive with PAS and AB. The stomach was divided into fundic and pyloric regions. The mucosa was thrown into gastric pits, into which the gastric glands opened. The surface epithelium was mucous secreting columnar cells and stained positive with PAS but negative with AB. The fundic gland was made by oxynticopeptic cells and few mucous cells, while the entire pyloric gland was made by mucous cells stained positive for both PAS and AB. The small intestine showed many villi but occasional poorly developed intestinal crypts were. The intestinal mucosa was lined with absorptive columnar epithelium with goblet cells, which stained positive with PAS and AB. The morphological characteristics of the oviduct of 12 sexually mature rheas (Rhea americana) were studied. Only the left oviduct is developed as a long tube with a length of 122 +/- 23.1 cm, and is subdivided into infundibulum (15.2 +/- 4.0 cm), magnum (63.3 +/- 9.4 cm), isthmus (5.6 +/- 3.1 cm), uterus (16.0 +/- 4.2 cm) and vagina (11.5 +/- 1.4 cm). The mucous membrane of the oviduct, as a whole, possesses luminal folds covered by ciliated columnar epithelium with secretory cells. The infundibulum part presents a cranial opening with thin and long fimbriae with few tubular glands in caudal tubular portion. In the magnum, the largest portion of the oviduct, the folds are thicker and are filled with tubular glands. The isthmus is short and presents less bulky folds and a few tubular glands. A bag-shaped uterus in the cranial area shows thin folds, and in the caudal region (shell gland) more ramified folds with few tubular glands. The vagina has long luminal folds and a thick muscular tunic; no glands with sperm-storage characteristics have been observed. In conclusion, the oviduct in sexually mature rhea has morphological similarities with the other species of birds already described; however it presents its own characteristics to produce a big egg.

背景．縦隔に発生する嚢胞性病変には様々な疾患が存在するが，嚢胞壁に配列する上皮や構成成分を丹念に確認することが，病変の病理組織診断に役立つ．症例．胸部異常陰影で精査となった59歳，男性．画像では上縦隔の左右腕頭静脈に挟まれた領域に径4 cm大の単房性の嚢胞性腫瘤を認めた．右開胸アプローチにて，一部嚢胞壁が残存するも嚢胞摘出術を施行し，緊満した壁の薄い単房性の嚢胞が左右腕頭静脈血管に挟まれるように存在していた．病理組織学的には，嚢胞壁の内面は単層の線毛円柱上皮で覆われ，周囲の脂肪織内に一部退縮胸腺組織と思われる構造が認められた．免疫組織学的検索では，線毛円柱上皮の下層に血管・脂肪織に加え胸腺上皮細胞や未熟胸腺Tリンパ球を含む層が確認され，胸腺嚢胞との診断が可能であった．結論．ほとんどが線毛円柱上皮で裏打ちされ，気管支原生嚢胞との鑑別を要した胸腺嚢胞症例を経験し，（1）嚢胞壁における高度に菲薄化した胸腺組織は，薄い血管脂肪リンパ上皮層（vasculo-adipo-lympho-epithelial（VALE）layer）として存在すること，（2）胸腺組織の証明には免疫組織化学的な検索が有用であることを学んだ．

Ciliated hepatic foregut cyst (CHFC) is a rare, benign, solitary cyst consisting of ciliated columnar epithelium. They are lined by a layer of ciliated columnar cells and contain mucoid material and debris. It is the ciliated epithelium that distinguishes them from other hepatic cysts. The cyst is generally found incidentally on radiologic imaging or during surgical exploration. There has been an increase in the number of reports of CHFC during the past 15 years in the surgical pathology literature, presumably because of increased availability of various radiologic imaging modalities. Although it is rare, CHFC should be included in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the liver and is important to consider in aspirates obtained for the evaluation of possible neoplastic disease. We report a case diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration for a liver cyst discovered incidentally during the evaluation of acute pancreatitis.

症例は38歳, 男性. 食物通過障害を主訴に近医を受診したところ上腹部嚢胞性病変を指摘されたため, 精査加療目的にて当科紹介となった. 腹部CTでは胃噴門部に5.5cmの嚢胞性病変を認めた. 食物通過障害があり, 血清CA19-9が367.8U/mlと高値を示したため, 胃噴門部の消化管重複症の診断で下部食道・噴門側胃切除術, 空腸間置再建を施行した. 病理組織学的検査所見で胃病変は線毛円柱上皮で被覆され外側に筋層を伴う嚢胞であり, 胃重複症と診断した. 悪性化の所見はなかった. 消化管重複症は稀な疾患であり, 組織学的にも発生学的にも多彩であるといわれている. 今回われわれが経験した胃嚢胞性病変は通常の消化管粘膜ではない線毛円柱上皮で覆われており, いわゆる前腸嚢胞と考えられ, 消化管重複症の原因が原始前腸の分離異常や呼吸器原基の迷入によるものであることを示唆する1例と考えられた.

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate by light and electron microscopy the effect of topical estriol on the nasal mucosa in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT). Methods Twelve patients were instructed to apply twice daily 0.1% estriol as a nose ointment over a period of 12 months. Written consent was obtained from each patient, allowing biopsy specimens of the nasal mucosa to be taken prior to and 3, 6 and 12 months after estriol application. Results Metaplastic change of the nasal mucosa was observed 6 months after topical estriol application. The former ciliated columnar epithelium changed into a keratinizing squamous epithelium. The effect was reversible after discontinuation of estriol application. Conclusions For the first time, we could outline the effect of topical estriol on the nasal mucosa. These histomorphological findings, and the fact that estriol is a low-potency metabolite of estradiol, make estriol a valuable agent in the treatment of HHT patients.

As vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid, VC) is known to be essential for many enzymatic reactions, the study on the transport mechanism of VC through cytoplasmic membrane is crucial to understanding physiological role of VC in cells and the respiratory system. In this regard, the study on the newly identified sodium-dependent VC transporters (SVCTs), SVCT1 and SVCT2, is required in organs that contain high concentration of VC. We have shown the distribution of SVCT proteins in the respiratory system, which has been reported to be one of the organs with a high concentration of VC, using immunohistochemical techniques. In the present study, intense SVCT immunoreactivities (IRs) were mainly localized in the respiratory system epithelial cells. In the trachea, both SVCT1 and 2 were localized in the psuedostratified ciliated columnar epithelium. In the terminal bronchiole, SVCT1 and 2 IRs were mainly observed in the apical portion of the simple columnar epithelium. In addition, SVCT IRs was localized within the cell membrane of some alveolar cells, even though we could not identify the exact cell types. These results provide the first evidence that intense SVCT1 and 2 IRs were found in the apical portion of the respiratory epithelial cells, suggesting that SVCT proteins in the apical portion could transport the reduced form of VC included in the airway surface liquid into the respiratory epithelial cells.

Enterogenous cysts are rare, benign lesions involving the spinal canal or the cerebellopontine angle. Typically they present with compression of the spinal cord or cranial nerves. They are usually 1 cm or less in size and are typically lined by columnar mucin-producing epithelium resembling enteric epithelium or columnar ciliated epithelium resembling respiratory epithelium. The case records of the Division of Neuropathology at Indiana University were reviewed for cystic lesions of the spinal canal and cranial cavity for a 26-year period. Seven surgically resected enterogenous cysts were identified. The original slides were studied. Additional sections were stained with mucicarmine, and immunohistochemical stains including thyroid transcription factor 1, epithelial membrane antigen, and cytokeratin 5/6 (CK5/6) were performed. Electron microscopy was performed in 1 case. The cysts ranged in size from 4 to 10 mm. One had stratified cuboidal epithelium, 1 had ciliated columnar and stratified squamous epithelium, 1 had columnar mucinous epithelium, and 4 had ciliated columnar epithelium. Epithelial membrane antigen and CK5/6 positivity were observed in all cases. Strong CK5/6 positivity was seen in the basal cells, with little or no immunoreactivity in the ciliated cells. Mucicarmine positivity was observed in 4 cases, and thyroid transcription factor 1 positivity was observed in 2 cases. Electron microscopy demonstrated well-developed stereocilia, distinct basal cells, and a thin basement membrane. The histopathologic, ultrastructural, and immunologic findings in these lesions are similar to those present in the bronchial epithelium, supporting the hypothesis of endodermal origin for these lesions.

Objective: To examine 3 radicular cysts, which appeared to be atypical glandular odontogenic cysts. Patients and Methods: Histological and immunohistochemical investigation of 3 extirpated radicular cysts of 3 patients, using cytokeratin 13 and 18 expression was performed and the findings compared with those of normal oral epithelium, radicular cyst, and postoperative maxillary cyst. Results: The cysts were lined with ciliated columnar epithelium with a few mucicarmine positive cells. None of the cyst linings contained papillary projections, crypt-like depression, and luminal epithelial plaques, which are characteristic of glandular odontogenic cysts. Immunohistochemically, the 3 cyst linings were positive for cytokeratin 18 and cytokeratin 13, although the cytokeratin 13 expression intensity varied from strong to weak. Cytokeratin 18 was expressed on the upper layers, while cytokeratin 13 was expressed in the middle layers. Conclusion: From these clinical and histological appearances, the 3 cysts were regarded as glandular odontogenic cysts although they are not typical for glandular odontogenic cysts.

Extensive tracheal defects may pose a life-threatening dilemma. Although tracheal transplantation may represent a reconstructive solution, very little is known regarding the immunobiology and behavior of tracheal allografts. The objective of this study was to assess the pattern and kinetics of re-epithelialization of orthotopic tracheal allografts in immunosuppressed recipients. Thirty-eight age-matched mice were randomly assigned to five experimental groups. BALB/c donor tracheal segments were orthotopically transplanted into either syngeneic BALB/c or MHC mismatched allogeneic C57BL/6 recipients with and without immunosuppression. On post-transplant days 7, 14, 28, 48, and 62, animals from each group were evaluated by serial histology, electron microscopy, and serial immunohistochemical analysis for mucosal phenotype, re-epithelialization pattern, and lymphocyte subpopulations. Nonimmunosuppressed recipients underwent recipient-derived basal cell re-epithelialization by Day 48, with differentiation into a sparse population of ciliated columnar epithelium by Day 62, whereas immunosuppressed recipients underwent basal cell re-epithelialization 28 d after transplantation and differentiation into a dense population of ciliated columnar epithelium by Day 48. The re-epithelialization process occurred in a definable pattern that was significantly enhanced with the addition of immunosuppression. Orthotopic tracheal transplants undergo progressive re-epithelialization with recipient-derived basal cells that differentiate into ciliated columnar epithelium in a definable pattern that is enhanced with the addition of immunosuppression.

Objective and importance Epithelial cysts of the central nervous system are unusual entities, with the majority reported to occur in the spinal canal. More unusual is the intracranial presentation, which shows a predilection for midline localization in the posterior fossa, brainstem, and suprasellar regions. This report discusses the differential diagnosis, pathogenesis, radiographic presentation, and therapeutic considerations of a laterally positioned cerebral convexity endodermal cyst. Clinical presentation A 49-year-old right-handed man presented with approximately a 30-month history of short- and long-term memory difficulties. A magnetic resonance imaging study revealed a large, nonenhancing, extra-axial cystic lesion overlying the right lateral frontal convexity. Intervention A right frontoparietal craniotomy exposed a large extra-axial cyst with an opaque, yellowish-white membrane containing a mucoid fluid. Histological analysis disclosed a layer of unremarkable, ciliated columnar epithelium with a basement membrane that stained positive for cytokeratin, periodic acid-Schiff, and Alcian blue. No evidence of either a muscular or cartilaginous layer around the mucosa was present to further delineate neurenteric versus bronchogenic origin of the cyst. Conclusion This case involved the occurrence of a solitary endodermal cyst as an extra-axial mass localized over the lateral frontal lobe. The lateral supratentorial localization of this lesion illustrates the need for consideration of the pathogenesis of this entity as well as its diagnostic differentiation from other cystic abnormalities in this region. A review of the histochemistry of endodermal, neuroepithelial, and other cerebral cysts is presented.
