Background: Black American children are at higher risk for developing asthma than White children. Identifying potential scalable preventive interventions that can reduce the racial disparities in asthma prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality are needed. We leveraged data from an RCT of prenatal supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in Black American women, to explore whether prenatal fatty acid supplementation is associated with offspring wheeze and asthma. Methods: Data were from the Nutrition and Pregnancy Study (NAPS), a double-blind RCT of prenatal DHA supplementation in Black women targeting stress regulation during pregnancy. A subset of mothers (n = 83) completed a standardized questionnaire on offspring wheeze and asthma when children were between 0.5 and 5.5 years of age. DHA levels were measured from venous blood and reported as percent of total fatty acids. Results: Of the 83 mothers providing data on child wheeze and asthma, 57 (68.7%) had been randomized to active DHA and 26 (31.3%) to placebo. Mothers and research staff were blind to group assignment. Comparison at the group assignment level yielded a relative reduction of 32% in the rate of wheeze or asthma among offspring of mothers assigned to active DHA compared to offspring of mothers assigned to placebo (OR = 1.6 [95% CI = 0.50– 5.09], p = 0.426). DHA levels measured at 25– 29 and 33– 37 weeks of gestation differed as a function of offspring wheeze or asthma (t = 2.21, p = 0.015 and t = 2.54, p = 0.007, respectively). Conclusion: These preliminary data suggest that increasing prenatal levels of DHA could be considered as a potential prevention for asthma in Black American children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Endosulfan is a highly toxic agrichemical used in the cashew plantations. The Stockholm Convention held in April 2011 recommended a global ban on the manufacture and use of endosulfan because of its adverse effects on human health and the environment. Its impact on the quality of food, water, and beverages; and its ability to cause neurobehavioral disorders, congenital malformations in female subjects, and abnormalities related to the male reproductive system are studied, but however information regarding the oral health of endosulfan victims is scant. Objectives: To assess the oral health status of the endosulfan victim in rehabilitation center. Method and Methodology: A cross sectional study on 18 subjects of 4-50 years of age were interviewed and examined using modified WHO oral health assessment proforma (1997) in Endosulfan Relief and Remediation Cell in Kokkada, Belthangady Taluk, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, India. Results: Among the subjects, 10 (>50%) were found to be in age group

Objective: Patients with moderate to severe preoperative pain have a high incidence of postoperative pain. The objective of this trial was to evaluate the efficiency of oral premedication with Aceclofenac (immediate release and controlled release) in the management of post-instrumentation pain in root canal treatment, in patients with moderate to severe preoperative pain. Methods: Three-arm parallel, triple blinded randomized controlled trial was planned. Patients with moderate to severe endodontic pain, requiring primary endodontic treatment were enrolled. Aceclofenac 100mg-immediate release (Aceclofenac-IR), Aceclofenac 200mg-controlled release (Aceclofenac-CR), and Ibuprofen 400mg were compared. The tablets were given one hour before the root canal treatment. Postoperatively, patients rated their pain at various time points. The duration of pain relief (primary outcome), the intensity of post-instrumentation pain, and the need for additional medicine were calculated. Statistical analysis was done using Kruskal-Wallis followed by Dunn post-hoc, Chi-square tests, and Binominal logistic regression. Results: Aceclofenac-CR had a statistically significant longest duration of pain relief when compared to Ibuprofen (p=0.037) and Aceclofenac-IR (p=0.026). The intensity of post-instrumentation pain was lowest in Aceclofenac-CR, followed by Aceclofenac-IR and Ibuprofen. Additional medicine was required for only 8% of patients in Aceclofenac-CR group; whereas for 32% in each of Aceclofenac-IR and Ibuprofen groups. The odds of taking additional medicine were reduced to 0.16 in Aceclofenac-CR; increased to 1.05 with age. Conclusion: Aceclofenac-CR had the longest duration of pain relief compared to Aceclofenac-IR and Ibuprofen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A unique method is described for transforming linear polymers into nanoparticles of controlled dimensions by applying olefin metathesis. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is shown to be an effective way to monitor covalent cross-linking reactions in polymers.

A system to polymerize alpha-olefins to furnish electron-propylene (EP)-type polymers was described. The control of polymer structure can allow for the formation of new polymers with desirable properties and the use of higher alpha-olefins, such as 1-decene, is particularly attractive as oversupplies of linear alpha-olefins higher than 1-octane.

The influence on the optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal displays (LCDs) was examined for neutral molecule binding by mesogen/receptors in the mesomorphic phase. The motivation was to prepare neutral molecule sensors that use a colour change to signal analyte binding. A receptor that binds barbiturate analytes was modified with two or one cholesteryl groups to yield compounds 2 and 3, respectively. LCDs were prepared by incorporating one of the receptor/mesogen compounds into a cholesteric LC blend along with a potential H-bonding guest. The optical properties of the LCDs were then determined by measuring the absorbance of the displays. For various LCDs, the colour of the display depended upon several factors: the amount of guest molecule used, the number of cholesteryl side chains on the receptor and the mole concentration of receptor/mesogen in the blend. In particular, complementary host/guest binding of H-bonding analytes by the bis(cholesteryl) receptor 2 in a cholesteric LCD caused a change of up to +70 nm, which was observed by the naked eye as a blue-to-orange colour change. The article reports that the living and regioregular polymerization of α-olefins using rac-3/methylaluminoxane (MAO), a C2-symmetric catalyst based on bulky chiral anilines. The work demonstrates that controlled chain-walking coupled with living behavior allows for the synthesis of ethylene-propylene copolymers with tailored molecular weight and ethylene content.
