During the past decade, cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have shown tremendous potential as a building block to fabricate new advanced materials that are both biocompatible and biodegradable. The excellent mechanical properties of the individual CNF can be transferred to macroscale fibers through careful control in hydrodynamic alignment and assembly processes. The optimization of such processes relies on the understanding of nanofibril dynamics during the process, which in turn requires in situ characterization. Here, we use a shear-free mixing experiment combined with scanning small-angle X-ray scattering (scanning-SAXS) to provide time-resolved nanoscale kinetics during the in situ assembly of dispersed cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) upon mixing with a sodium chloride solution. The addition of monovalent ions led to the transition to a volume-spanning arrested (gel) state. The transition of CNFs is associated with segmental aggregation of the particles, leading to a connected network and reduced Brownian motion, whereby an aligned structure can be preserved. Furthermore, we find that the extensional flow seems to enhance the formation of these segmental aggregates, which in turn provides a comprehensible explanation for the superior material properties obtained in shear-free processes used for spinning filaments from CNFs. This observation clearly highlights the need for different assembly strategies depending on morphology and interactions of the dispersed nanoparticles, where this work can be used as a guide for improved nanomaterial processes., Using in situ X-ray scattering in a shear-free mixing experiment, the time-resolved ion-induced gel transition of cellulose nanofibrils is studied.

Time-resolved in situ characterization of well-defined mixing processes using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is usually challenging, especially if the process involves changes of material viscoelasticity. In specific, it can be difficult to create a continuous mixing experiment without shearing the material of interest; a desirable situation since shear flow both affects nanoscale structures and flow stability as well as resulting in unreliable time-resolved data. Here, we demonstrate a flow-focusing mixing device for in situ nanostructural characterization using scanning-SAXS. Given the interfacial tension and viscosity ratio between core and sheath fluids, the core material confined by sheath flows is completely detached from the walls and forms a zero-shear plug flow at the channel center, allowing for a trivial conversion of spatial coordinates to mixing times. With this technique, the time-resolved gel formation of dispersed cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) was studied by mixing with a sodium chloride solution. It is observed how locally ordered regions, so called tactoids, are disrupted when the added monovalent ions affect the electrostatic interactions, which in turn leads to a loss of CNC alignment through enhanced rotary diffusion. The demonstrated flow-focusing scanning-SAXS technique can be used to unveil important kinetics during structural formation of nanocellulosic materials. However, the same technique is also applicable in many soft matter systems to provide new insights into the nanoscale dynamics during mixing., We present a shear-free flow-focusing mixing experiment to study time-resolved reaction kinetics of nanoscale materials through scanning-SAXS.

Bio-based nanocellulose has been shown to possess impressive mechanical properties and simplicity for chemical modifications. The chemical properties are largely influenced by the surface area and functionality of the nanoscale materials. However, finding the typical cross-sections of nanocellulose, such as cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), has been a long-standing puzzle, where subtle changes in extraction methods seem to yield different shapes and dimensions. Here, we extracted CNFs from wood with two different oxidation methods and variations in degree of oxidation and high-pressure homogenization. The cross-sections of CNFs were characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering and wide-angle X-ray diffraction in dispersed and freeze-dried states, respectively, where the results were analyzed by assuming that the cross-sectional distribution was quantized with an 18-chain elementary microfibril, the building block of the cell wall. We find that the results agree well with a pseudosquare unit having a size of about 2.4 nm regardless of sample, while the aggregate level strongly depends on the extraction conditions. Furthermore, we find that aggregates have a preferred cohesion of phase boundaries parallel to the (110)-plane of the cellulose fibril, leading to a ribbon shape on average.

Rice husks are an agricultural residue of great annual production and have a high cellulose content. In this study, we have prepared highly charged carboxyl cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from rice husks using the TEMPO-oxidation method and the extracted CNFs were evaluated as an adsorbent for the removal of lead(II) and lanthanum(III) (Pb(II) and La(III)) ions from contaminated water. Three different forms of nanocellulose adsorbents were prepared: suspension, freeze-dried, and nanocomposite containing magnetic nanoparticles, where their adsorption performance was tested against the removal of the two chosen heavy metal ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of rice husk based CNFs was found to be the highest in the nanocellulose suspension, i.e., 193.2 mg g−1 for Pb(II) and 100.7 mg g−1 for La(III). The separation of the used adsorbent in the suspension was further facilitated by the gelation of the CNFs and metal cations, where the resulting floc could be removed by gravity-driven filtration. The absorption mechanism of the investigated CNF system is mainly due to electrostatic interactions between negatively charged carboxylate groups and multivalent metal ions. It was found that 90% lanthanum content in the form of lanthanum oxychloride (determined by X-ray powder diffraction) could be obtained by incinerating the CNF/LaCl3 gel. This study demonstrates a viable and sustainable solution to upcycle agricultural residues into remediation nanomaterials for the removal and recovery of toxic heavy metal ions from contaminated water.

Two different chemical methods, TEMPO-oxidation and nitro-oxidation, were used to extract carboxyl cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) from non-wood biomass sources (i.e., jute, soft and hard spinifex grasses). The combined TEMPO-oxidation and homogenization approach was very efficient to produce CNFs from the cellulose component of biomass; however, the nitro-oxidation method was also found to be effective to extract CNFs directly from raw biomass even without mechanical treatment. The effect of these two methods on the resulting cross-section dimensions of CNFs was investigated by solution small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The UV-Vis spectroscopic data from 0.1 wt% TEMPO-oxidized nanofiber (TOCNF) and nitro-oxidized nanofiber (NOCNF) suspensions showed that TOCNF had the highest transparency (> 95%) because of better dispersion, resulted from the highest carboxylate content (1.2 mmol/g). The consistent scattering and microscopic results indicated that TOCNFs from jute and spinifex grasses possessed rectangular cross-sections, while NOCNFs exhibited near square cross-sections. This study revealed that different oxidation methods can result in different degrees of biomass exfoliation and different CNF morphology.

Green and sustainable cellulose nanocrystals-TiO2 nanocomposite was prepared for environmental applications using a facile method comprised of thermal degradation of aqueous titanium precursors., Nanocellulose, which can be derived from any cellulosic biomass, has emerged as an appealing nanoscale scaffold to develop inorganic–organic nanocomposites for a wide range of applications. In this study, titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanocrystals were synthesized in the cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) scaffold using a simple approach, i.e., hydrolysis of a titanium oxysulfate precursor in a CNC suspension at low temperature. The resulting TiO2 nanoparticles exhibited a narrow size range between 3 and 5 nm, uniformly distributed on and strongly adhered to the CNC surface. The structure of the resulting nanocomposite was evaluated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. The growth mechanism of TiO2 nanocrystals in the CNC scaffold was also investigated by solution small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), where the results suggested the mineralization process could be described by the Lifshitz–Slyozov–Wagner theory for Ostwald ripening. The demonstrated TiO2/CNC nanocomposite system exhibited excellent performance in dye degradation and antibacterial activity, suitable for a wide range of environmental remediation applications.

Human urine contains the majority of nutrients in domestic wastewater, therefore treatment of source-separated urine by sustainable methods would become a low-cost and eco-friendly alternative to conventional urban wastewater treatment system. In this work, a waste stream composed of real urine and hygiene wastewater was prepared, which had characteristic of high nitrogen content and low available C/N ratio. Membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) is an emerging technology utilizing microporous or nonporous aeration membranes as the substrate for biofilm attachment, and this configuration could promote the growth of autotrophic nitrifying bacteria and the efficiency of nitrogen removal process. The waste stream was treated with a home-made MABR system to remove the organic carbon and nitrogen pollutants. Over a four-month operation period with the incoming waste stream concentration progressively elevated, the system achieved 90-95% removal of TOC, 50-73% oxidation of ammonium-nitrogen, and 24-63% removal of total nitrogen from the influent, without external carbon source input. The results indicated that MABR has the potential for urine wastewater treatment with low consumption in energy and materials.

Synthetic rubber produced from nonrenewable fossil fuel requires high energy costs and is dependent on the presumed unstable petroleum price. Natural rubber latex (NRL) is one of the major alternative sustainable rubber sources since it is derived from the plant &lsquo, Hevea brasiliensis&rsquo, Our study focuses on integrating sustainably processed carboxycellulose nanofibers from untreated jute biomass into NRL to enhance the mechanical strength of the material for various applications. The carboxycellulose nanofibers (NOCNF) having carboxyl content of 0.94 mmol/g was prepared and integrated into its nonionic form (&ndash, COONa) for its higher dispersion in water to increase the interfacial interaction between NRL and NOCNF. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses of NOCNF showed the average dimensions of nanofibers were length (L) = 524 &plusmn, 203 nm, diameter (D) 7 &plusmn, 2 nm and thickness 2.9 nm. Furthermore, fourier transform infra-red spectrometry (FTIR) analysis of NOCNF depicted the presence of carboxyl group. However, the dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurement of NRL demonstrated an effective diameter in the range of 643 nm with polydispersity of 0.005. Tensile mechanical strengths were tested to observe the enhancement effects at various concentrations of NOCNF in the NRL. Mechanical properties of NRL/NOCNF films were determined by tensile testing, where the results showed an increasing trend of enhancement. With the increasing NOCNF concentration, the film modulus was found to increase quite substantially, but the elongation-to-break ratio decreased drastically. The presence of NOCNF changed the NRL film from elastic to brittle. However, at the NOCNF overlap concentration (0.2 wt. %), the film modulus seemed to be the highest.

High aspect ratio carboxycellulose nanofibers (NOCNF), having typical length over 1000 nm, width ∼4.6 nm, thickness ∼1.3 nm, and carboxylate content of 0.42 mmol/g, were extracted from jute fibers using a modified nitro-oxidation method. The extracted nanofiber was found to possess crystallinity of 69% (measured by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, WAXD), relatively higher than that of raw jute fibers (crystallinity ∼61%). Gelation of NOCNF in aqueous suspensions was observed due to the high aspect ratio of the fiber even at a relatively low concentration. Rheological studies on the NOCNF suspensions at different concentrations (0.01–1 wt %) revealed the shear-thinning behavior with increasing shear rate. The corresponding viscoelastic moduli (G′ and G′′) results indicated that the NOCNF suspension at concentration between 0.1 and 0.2 wt % possessed a liquid–gel transition. Mechanistic behavior and flow properties of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) in aqueous systems can be described by the crowding factor and the concept of contact points, which are functions of the aspect ratio and concentration of CNF in the suspension. In this study, CNFs with a range of aspect ratio and surface charge density (380–1360 μmol/g) were used to demonstrate this methodology. It was shown that the critical networking point of the CNF suspension, determined by rheological measurements, was consistent with the gel crowding factor, which was 16. Correlated to the crowding factor, both viscosity and modulus of the systems were found to decrease by increasing the charge density of CNF, which also affected the flocculation behavior. Interestingly, an anomalous rheological behavior was observed near the overlap concentration (0.05 wt %) of CNF, at which the crowding factor was below the gel crowding factor, and the storage modulus (G′) decreased dramatically at a given frequency threshold. Carboxycellulose nanofibers were extracted from untreated jute using a simple nitro-oxidation method based on nitric acid/sodium nitrite. The characteristics of nitro-oxidized carboxycellulose nanofibers (NOCNF) with low crystallinity (35%), high carboxylate content (1.15 mmol/g) and high surface charge (− 70 mV) made them an excellent substrate for Pb(II) ion removal from water. For example, a low concentration of NOCNF suspension (0.23 wt%) could remove a wide range of Pb(II) ions ranging from 50 to 5000 ppm in a short time-interval ( 1000 ppm). Evidence of nanoscale lead hydroxide crystallization, induced by the lead(II)-NOCNF aggregated scaffold, was confirmed by FTIR, UV–visible spectroscopy, SEM/EDS, WAXD and TEM measurements.

Carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), having an average width of 7 nm and thickness of 1.5 nm, were produced by TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical)-mediated oxidation method. The fiber cross-sectional dimensions were determined using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy techniques, where the rheological properties under different concentration and ionic strength were also investigated. The formation of hydrogel was evidenced by increasing the CNF concentration or ionic strength of the solvent (water), while the gel structure in ion-induced CNF hydrogels was found to be relatively inhomogeneous. The gelation behavior was closely related to the segmental aggregation of charged CNF, which could be quantitatively characterized by the correlation length (ξ) from the low-angle scattering profile and the scattering invariant (Q) in SAXS.

The pursuit of sustainable and environmentally friendly materials has been driving a tremendous interest in biobased alternatives in the last decade. Nanocellulose has been widely seen as a prime contender due to its impressive properties as well as being abundant and biodegradable. Recently, it has been demonstrated how nanocellulosic materials can be hydrodynamically aligned in flows and assembled continuously into materials with tunable macroscopic properties. However, the aligning mechanisms of the highly entangled system of elongated nanoparticles in different flow situations still remain largely unknown. Here, we investigate the orientation distributions of cellulose nanofibrils and nanocrystals (CNF and CNC) in a straight quadratic channel at various flow rates using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), where CNF and CNC are aligned by strong shear flow close to the walls. In dilute systems, CNC behave as Brownian ellipsoids, while at semi-dilute concentrations there seems to be a limit to how high alignment of CNF and CNC can be achieved in a shear dominated flow even though particle interactions clearly aid in aligning the system at low flow rates. Furthermore, we show how some essential parameters in the orientational distribution can be obtained with polarized optical microscopy.

Since the first synthesis of trifluoromethyl ethers in 1935, the trifluoromethoxy (OCF3) group has made a remarkable impact in medicinal, agrochemical, and materials science research. However, our inability to facilely incorporate the OCF3 group into molecules, especially heteroaromatics, has limited its potential across a broad spectrum of technological applications. Herein, we report a scalable and operationally simple protocol for regioselective trifluoromethoxylation of a wide range of functionalized pyridines and pyrimidines under mild reaction conditions. The trifluoromethoxylated products are useful scaffolds that can be further elaborated by amidation and palladium-catalysed cross coupling reactions. Mechanistic studies suggest that a radical O-trifluoromethylation followed by the OCF3-migration reaction pathway is operable. Given the unique properties of the OCF3 group and the ubiquity of pyridine and pyrimidine in biologically active molecules and functional materials, trifluoromethoxylated pyridines and pyrimidines could serve as valuable building blocks for the discovery and development of new drugs, agrochemicals, and materials.

In this study, TiO2 nanocrystals were synthesized in the scaffold of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) using in situ hydrolysis, where the morphology and size of TiO2 was controlled by CNC’s functional groups and surface charge. The resulting TiO2/CNC nanocomposites showed a superior photocatalytic activity for Cr(VI) reduction under visible light (λ > 420 nm) due to the combined effects of small TiO2 size and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) complex between CNC and TiO2. It was found that the charge-enriched CNC not only acted as a template to direct the crystal growth of TiO2, but also played essential roles on light harvesting and charge transfer thereby promoting the photoreduction of Cr(VI). The demonstrated system represents a unique pathway to develop a lower cost and efficient purification material for remediation of Cr(VI).

Nanocellulose extracted from wood pulps using TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical)-mediated oxidation and sulfuric acid hydrolysis methods was characterized by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The dimensions of this nanocellulose (TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofiber (TOCN) and sulfuric acid hydrolyzed cellulose nanocrystal (SACN)) revealed by the different scattering methods were compared with those characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The SANS and SAXS data were analyzed using a parallelepiped-based form factor. The width and thickness of the nanocellulose cross section were ∼8 and ∼2 nm for TOCN and ∼20 and ∼3 nm for SACN, respectively, where the fitting results from SANS and SAXS profiles were consistent with each other. N-protected N-arylhydroxylamines are initially O-trifluoromethylated prior to a thermally induced migration of the CF3-O-group from the amino function to the ortho-position of the attached arene.

Aryl trifluoromethoxylation by a two-step sequence of O-trifluoromethylation of N-aryl-N-hydroxylamine derivatives and intramolecular OCF3 migration is presented. This protocol allows easy access to a wide range of synthetically useful ortho-OCF3 aniline derivatives. In addition, it utilizes bench-stable reagents, is operationally simple, shows high functional-group tolerance, and is amenable to gram-scale as well as one-pot synthesis. A reaction mechanism of a heterolytic cleavage of the NOCF3 bond followed by recombination of the resulting nitrenium ion and trifluoromethoxide is proposed for the OCF3 -migration reaction.
