- Abstract
Catherine of Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Margaret of France constituted the three most evident pieces of power at the court of Henry II of France. They were not just only part of the cultural and political Valois program, but they were also actively engaged within it, thus permitting the use of their respective images to create a true divine pantheon within which consolidate the pretentions of their dynasty. This paper explores the constitution of the mythological iconography relating to these three figures of power altogether to show its genesis, development and the personalities who made this iconographical pan-theon possible., Catalina de Médicis, Diana de Poitiers y Margarita de Francia constituyeron las tres piezas esenciales del poder femenino en la corte del rey Enrique II.

Caterina de’ Medici facing the “day after”. The experience of failure to take power (December 1560). This paper examines the way in which Catherine de’ Medici manages to save the regency of the Crown of France for herself in the name of her son, Charles IX, during the month of December 1560. After the political and religious crisis launched by the reign of François II, the Queen Mother’s purpose is twofold: to protect the Valois’ authority from the Protestants’ growing boldness and to restore public order as the only solution to softly gain back the unity of the faith. Under the eye of a nobility of courtiers who hope to take advantage from the change of reign, the Henri II’s widow draw several lessons from the recent past to control these decisive “days after” for the royal authority. Convinced from experience that there is no better political instrument but the consensus, she leads a skilful politic of redistribution of offices and honours. Despite the oppositions stretched against her, the Queen Mother finally manages to prevail over the princes du sang’s ambition, the Grands’ desire for revenge and the claims from the États Généraux gathered at the same time.
