Background: The Elders Mentoring Program (EMP) is part of a strengths-based community-based participatory research partnership with the Cree communities of Maskwacîs, Alberta, Canada. The EMP objective is to promote maternal and child health through traditional Cree teachings and support from community Elders to pregnant women and their partners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Elders decided to shift the program to an online format in early 2021. The Elders continued to offer mentorship to program participants virtually by Zoom and telephone, and online workshops. The objective of this study was to qualitatively explore the experiences of women that took part in the virtual EMP. Methods: We utilized qualitative description as our method, informed by our overarching community-led research partnership. Semi-structured phone interviews were conducted by Maskwacîs research assistants (RAs) with 11 women who participated in the virtual program. Interviews were conducted between December 2021 and June 2022. The participants were asked about their perceptions of the program and its benefits. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded by four RAs using thematic analysis. Results: Although cultural teachings are traditionally offered in person, the shift to the virtual platform was greatly appreciated by all the women. Technology can be a useful tool for cultural teachings and language to be shared among community members when they cannot be physically together. Four main themes emerged from the data, representing the participants' experiences, and learning through their interactions with the Elders from the EMP. The themes are: Ohpikihâwasowin (grounding and guiding on the path to be a healthy parent); Indigenous ways of healing; On the path of cultural learning; and Identity for self and baby. Conclusion: The virtual adaptation of the EMP allowed a space for Elders to offer support to women living in and out of the community to provide guidance with their pregnancies and into motherhood. The workshops and one-on-one calls allowed for cultural revitalization which is critical for Indigenous well-being. All the participants found that the teachings and interactions positively impacted their pregnancy and parenthood. Indigenous Elder advisors in Pelican Narrows, a Cree community in Northern Saskatchewan, have indicated that Western pain scales may not be responsive tools for pain assessments within their community. This study employed a mixed methods research design that involved two phases. Phase one was the development of a pain scale in collaboration with an Elder and a Knowledge Keeper. Phase two was a pilot of the CDPS utilised during virtual physiotherapy sessions for chronic back pain. Twenty-seven participants completed the pre-physiotherapy treatment questionnaires, and 10 participants engaged in semi-structured interviews (9 community members; 1 healthcare provider). A weighted kappa analysis yielded k = 0.696, indicating a good agreement between the CDPS and Faces Pain Scale-Revised in terms of documenting participants' pain. Qualitative data from interviews with community members revealed three major themes: 1) Learnings Regarding Pain Scales, 2) Patient Centered Care; and 3) Strength-Based Solutions for Improving Pain Communication. Two themes were uncovered through conversations with the HCP: 1) Perspectives on CDPS and 2) Healthcare Provider Experiences Communicating about Pain. In 2022, two updated classification systems for lymphoid neoplasms were published by the World Health Organization (WHO Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours, 5th edition, referred to hereafter as WHO-HAEM5) and the International Consensus Conference (ICC) (Alaggio et al. in Leukemia 36(7):1720–1748, 2022; Campo et al. in Blood 140(11):1229–1253, 2022). Both classifications were conceived by both pathologists and clinicians with expertise in the field. The reasons for this have been reviewed previously (Arber et al. in Virchows Arch 482(1):1–9, 2023; Cree in Leukemia 36(7):1701–1702, 2022, Leukemia 36(11):2750, 2022). Given that both groups were using data-driven processes and consensus and used the revised 4th edition of the WHO Classification of Haematolymphoid Tumours (WHO-HAEM4R) as a starting point, it is not entirely surprising that the resulting classifications are quite similar. However, they are not identical and reflect preferences or approaches for certain unsettled areas as well as preferred terminology. In order to implement the fifth generation (5G) communication system for a large number of users, the governments of many countries nominated the low 5G frequency band between 3.3 and 4.3 GHz. This paper proposes a wideband RFPA by designing the input matching network (MN) and output MN of the device using the simplified real frequency technique (SRFT) and the harmonic tuning network. The load-pull and source-pull is applied at multiple points for 100 MHz intervals over the bandwidth to obtain the optimum impedances at the output and input of the 10W Gallium Nitride (GaN) Cree CGH40010F device. To verify the design, the RFPA is simulated, and the performance is measured between 3.3 and 4.3 GHz. According to experimental findings, the measured drain efficiency (DE) throughout the whole bandwidth ranged from 57.5 to 67.5% at the output power of 40 dBm. Moreover, at the 1 dB compression point between 39.2 and 42.2 dBm output power, the drain efficiency (DE) achieves a high value of 81.2% with an output power of 42.2 dBm at a frequency of 3.3 GHz. The RFPA can obtain a maximum gain of 12.4 dB at 3.5 GHz. The linearity of the RFPA with a two-tone signal is measured and the value is less than -22 dBc all over the band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural resource governance challenges are often highly complex, particularly in Indigenous contexts. These challenges involve numerous landscape-level interactions, spanning jurisdictional, disciplinary, social, and ecological boundaries. In Eeyou Istchee, the James Bay Cree Territory of northern Quebec, Canada, traditional livelihoods depend on wild food species like moose. However, these species are increasingly being impacted by forestry and other resource development projects. The complex relationships between moose, resource development, and Cree livelihoods can limit shared understandings and the ability of diverse actors to respond to these pressures. Contributing to this complexity are the different knowledge systems held by governance actors who, while not always aligned, have broadly shared species conservation and sustainable development goals. This paper presents fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) as a methodological approach used to help elicit and interpret the knowledge of land-users concerning the impacts of forest management on moose habitat in Eeyou Istchee. We explore the difficulties of weaving this knowledge together with the results of moose GPS collar analysis and the knowledges of scientists and government agencies. The ways in which participatory, relational mapping approaches can be applied in practice, and what they offer to pluralistic natural resource governance research more widely, are then addressed. In 2011, the Government of Québec, Canada announced an ambitious twenty-five-year plan to develop the province's northern region—an area nearly twice the size of France. A centrepiece of the Plan Nord is to integrate the province's various Indigenous peoples in the sustainable development of the region. However, there are early warning signs of the potential for future conflict as some Indigenous groups mobilized opposition against proposed developments. This raises important questions: could the plan enhance prospects for improved cooperation between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous groups or is it likely to engender conflict? Which factors explain the diverging levels of support for the plan between the region's principal Indigenous peoples (i.e. Cree, Inuit, Innu)? The paper uses the 'sons of the soil' (SoS) conflict framework to theorize the mechanisms that can give rise to—or prevent the escalation of—Indigenous and non-Indigenous conflict in northern Québec. Though typically applied to case studies in the Global South, the SoS conflict framework provides a novel approach for understanding the contentious politics surrounding land, territory, and natural resource development in settler-colonial contexts. Based on the communication ethics of Ptahhotep and other inclusivist communication value systems, including several additional non-Western (Confucian, Buddhist, Aborigine, Cree, San, Māori, Ubuntu, and Islamic) as well as Western ones (Stoic, Christian, Kantian, socialist, liberal, and journalistic), we propose seven principles as common ground for the future regulation of media communication on a global scale. All seven are formulated in a manner similar to Ptahhotep's, providing a flexible range of norms allowing, for example, hate speech to be dealt with by criminalization, or in civil law, or by means of ethics rules and self-regulation, depending on the severity of the involved threats to humanity, to human beings, or to other core values. We reject an often-paralyzing comparative intercultural juxtaposition of individualism versus collectivism, instead suggesting an inclusivist and interculturally principled common ground for the regulation of communication. One high efficiency second harmonic tuned (2HT) power amplifier (PA) with a compact multi‐harmonic tuning network is presented. The proposed design method can drive the third harmonic impedance to short‐circuit condition to achieve an ideal 2HT PA operation. Then the second harmonic impedance is controlled to proper position to improve the PA efficiency. Meanwhile, the fundamental impedance is also transferred to 50 Ω load by making the most of this tuning network. Consequently, the proposed output network can be designed to a compact size and is suitable for high frequency PA applications. For demonstration, a PA using Cree CGH40010 GaN high‐electron‐mobility transistor is designed and fabricated at 3.5 GHz. The measured results show that the PA achieves peak power added efficiency of 72.8%, output power of 41.3 dBm and drain efficiency of 80.2% at 3.3 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency are two measures that can be used to assess sleep quality. Factors that are related to sleep quality include age, sex, sociodemographic factors, and physical and mental health status. This study examines factors related to sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency in one First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. Methods: A baseline survey of the First Nations Sleep Health project was completed between 2018 and 2019 in collaboration with two Cree First Nations. One-night actigraphy evaluations were completed within one of the two First Nations. Objective actigraphy evaluations included sleep efficiency and sleep onset latency. A total of 167 individuals participated, and of these, 156 observations were available for analysis. Statistical analysis was conducted using logistic and linear regression models. Results: More females (61%) than males participated in the actigraphy study, with the mean age being higher for females (39.6 years) than males (35.0 years). The mean sleep efficiency was 83.38%, and the mean sleep onset latency was 20.74 (SD = 27.25) minutes. Age, chronic pain, ever having high blood pressure, and smoking inside the house were associated with an increased risk of poor sleep efficiency in the multiple logistic regression model. Age, chronic pain, ever having anxiety, heart-related illness, and smoking inside the house were associated with longer sleep onset latency in the multiple linear regression model. This article provides a summary of the main themes discussed throughout this New Directions for Evaluation (NDE) issue. The issue underscores the importance of investing in Latina/o/e talent to increase the pipeline of Latina/o/e evaluators, committed to social justice who are trained in culturally responsive and equitable evaluation (CREE), with a Latina/o/e lens or LatCREE. The contributing authors of this issue offer LatCREE frameworks and approaches that center the voices of Latina/o/e communities to advance humanizing their assets and counter harmful status quo programs and services that are not aligned with the needs of communities and deplete resources. Furthermore, the current issue provides a deeper understanding of the perspectives and experiences of evaluators working with and for Latina/o/e communities. We offer an issue that critically engages voices that have been woefully absent to date, that of the Latina/o/e communities. In that sense, we hope it will spur discussions and raise questions about our role and responsibility as evaluators, to disrupt harmful practices, and to shed light on the issues impacting our communities and the culturally responsive approaches that may be used to address them. By focusing on individual settlements rather than viewing them as part of a trajectory of change, prior research on institutional settlements has not fully captured the dynamics of longer-term institutional change; yet this would be important to better understand progressive legitimation dynamics—in other words, how successive settlements may increase legitimacy in a long-term trajectory of change. This is a crucial issue, especially for peripheral actors lacking the resources, status, or power of more central ones. Our historical analysis focuses on the long-term struggle of the Cree First Nation in Canada and explains how they succeeded in increasing their dispositional legitimacy in and through the settlements. This required work in three interrelated processes: expansive argumentation, including problematizing of the state of affairs and creating discursive resonance with the prevailing discourses and values; building momentum by generating attention and exerting pressure in networks of actors; and seizing opportunities to negotiate with the other side. Thus, we challenge previous research on settlements by showing how they should not merely be seen as endpoints but rather as stepping-stones in a trajectory of institutional change. This paper describes the Plains Cree phenomenon of Order as a form of alternation not yet described as such in the literature. First, we provide a brief description of relevant Plains Cree grammar and Order as a phenomenon. This is followed by an overview of how the concept of alternation has been used in linguistics as an analytic tool. Finally, we discuss how conceiving of Order as an alternation allows for not only a better understanding of the phenomenon, but also results in a new type of alternation. We name this type of alternation a paradigmatic alternation and define it as any alternation where some lexeme can make use of two or more alternative paradigms of the same size and shape but with different morphological exponents, while representing the same set of grammatical features. We exemplify this with Plains Cree, where subject/object agreement has two distinct paradigms which verbs can take while retaining similar meanings. This discussion posits that the work of the Cree artist Kent Monkman offers a unique and potent contribution to the project of decolonisation rooted in an Indigenised context. Focusing on the parodic, art historical interventions of his artistic alter ego Miss Chief, it explores his art in view of 'transmotion', a crucial but often overlooked aspect of postindian tricksterism outlined by the Anishinaabe author Gerald Vizenor, as well as the postindian approach to translation. His approach will be considered against the foil of the project of decolonising proposed by the sociologist Boaventura de Sousa Santos, framed in terms of a post-abyssal ecology of knowledges, with a focus on the notion of intercultural translation and the motion of the swerve he proposes. The discussion concludes by positing the Vizenorian figure of the mixedblood, urban earthdiver as figurehead for a decolonial era of the future, supplanting the urban flâneur of modernity. Many Indigenous communities in Canada experience endemic tuberculosis with superimposed periodic epidemic outbreaks. Failures in outbreak management have resulted in the "seeding" of future infection and disease. In this paper we present a model that may be used in planning, implementation and review of tuberculosis outbreak management in Cree Indigenous communities in Canada, based on the Medicine Wheel, a paradigm for holistic living. In the context of tuberculosis management, the Medicine Wheel provides a path for the establishment of respectful cross-cultural relationships, the expression of values through action, true community engagement and partnership, and the establishment of culture-based processes of transparency, accountability and change. The Albany River system holds a special significance for the Omushkego Cree of subarctic Ontario, Canada, embodying their cultural roots, history, and the Cree way of life and worldviews. Through the Sibi program, youth learned traditional fishing practices from Elders and on-the-land experts, gaining valuable knowledge on the land and river. The program addressed barriers to being on the land, while also creating a space for the transfer of Indigenous knowledge and revitalising community social networks. The program took place in the summer, following the Omushkego Cree's seasonal cycle and employed community-based participatory research approach. Photovoice and semi-structured interviews were used to identify elements of well-being from an Indigenous perspective. Regardless of age or experience, participants expressed positive emotions while being on the land, highlighting how strengthening social and community networks, intergenerational knowledge transfer, and fostering cultural continuity contribute to improved well-being. Program outcomes emphasize the importance of collaboration with communities to gain insights into their needs, priorities, and values, ultimately creating more sustainable and effective well-being programs. My research is a personal effort to understand the experiences that have shaped my work, practice, and living of teaching mathematics. From the boy storied as being smart in mathematics to the man who was tasked in finding ways to Indigenize school mathematics, I have composed stories to live by that share the tensions, conflicting stories, and mis-educative experiences that have shaped who I am as a White Euro-Western mathematician in a Canadian prairie province. My research wonder serves a practical justification as I "attend to the importance of considering the possibility of shifting, or changing practice" (Clandinin, 2013, p. 36) in the context of cross-cultural teaching and learning. Much of the research around Indigenous mathematics education is shaped by misconceptions of Indigenization and inconsistent practices of how this is taken up by practitioners - topics that I analyzed during my doctoral studies.
