The tale of the war of the mice against the cat has a history of several thousands of years. First known from ancient Egypt, it was wide-spread in Classical antiquity, would remain popular in the Near East until modern times, and also was widely known in Europe in medieval and early modern times in paintings, prints, songs, and mock-epics. In China the most popular tale on the antagonism of mice and cats was the tale of their underworld court case. Starting from the first half of the nineteenth century, some versions of that tale also include an account of the war between the two species. Only one stand-alone treatment of the theme is known from an edition of the 1920s. In Japan the theme of the war of the mice against the cats also makes its first appearance in print in the first half of the nineteenth century. In Punica 14, Silius Italicus uses several digressions to associate Sicily with poetic traditions that were felt by the Romans to espouse a decidedly non- or anti-martial epic agenda (Alexandrian, Callimachean, neoteric). These digressions interrupt, delay and push back against the book's martial epic content, its narrative about Marcellus' invasion of the island. A conflict of genres or literary modes thus ensues in which epic's struggle to assert its hegemony over unepic literary traditions mirrors Rome's struggle to conquer Sicily. Through this conflict Silius explores the consequences of imperialism for Rome's Hellenistic heritage, including the influence of the Alexandrian poetic tradition on Roman epic. The article analyzes the novel "Ulysses" by James Joyce, examining the use of animal symbols collectively. According to the author, individual animal symbols exist for each episode of the novel while each animal acts either in sympathy or in opposition to the characters Stephen or Bloom. He goes on to discuss how animal symbolism is used to develop characters as well as used to narrate character conflicts. Noted animals referenced in the novel include rats, panthers, and foxes.

The dynamics of some Sophoklean agõn scenes depend on the presence of an atypically non-marginal chorus of free, Greek males. In Aias, Antigone, and Oidipous at Kolonos, characters perform their conflicts with each other toward the chorus as a socio-politically authoritative audience. Their interactions are, in part, negotiations of the chorus' authority, involving varied attempts to appropriate or marginalize it. This essay presents the uses of the work of philosopher Georg Hegel, a German philosopher, to analyze conflicts in the 21st century world. He wonders what the fundamental relationship is between deafness and conflict, and if deafness becomes the central conflict or does it simply become a component of it, or perhaps a mixture of the two. The author wants the reader to understand that the experience of deafness is unique for each person and molded by all other forces in a person's life, so that if these components were removed, the experience of deafness would be that of a vacuum.

In this paper, presented to Nottingham Trent University's Centre for Travel Writing Studies on 10 November 2005, Zoë Brân discusses her views on travel writing, which for her involves a three-stage process of anticipation, execution and synthesis. She sees travel writing as a craft, not as therapy or private diary. She does not believe it can be objective but she does strive to avoid emotional involvement. Brân explains that she is less interested in travel writing that focuses on the personality of its author than she is in texts that are the product of research and that recount other people's experiences. Brân's books have been on countries with recent histories of violent conflict and political strife. She describes her sense of responsibility to those whom she writes about and for whom she aims to be a mouthpiece, though she is conscious of the paradox that her informants and interviewees speak out only because she is there. This article addresses narrative inequality in the Belgian asylum procedure by means of a complex of preconditions for communication, noticeable in recorded interviews with African asylum seekers in Belgium. The author first examines the issue of linguistic--communicative resources: the 'broken' varieties of European languages in which asylum seekers tell their stories. Next, the structure and functions of a particular type of densely contextualizing sub-narrative, called 'home narratives' are explored, with special emphasis on their role as localizing discourse. Finally, the role of narratives in the asylum procedure is discussed, and the contrast in contextualizing directions between asylum seekers' narratives and text trajectories in the procedure is highlighted.
