Abstract

This paper aims at studying Hobbes' political ideas, and the starting point of this analysis is the differentiation suggested by Michelangelo Bovero, as regards the concept of politics: politics as conflict or contrast and politics as order or composition. Hobbes' thought seems to follow the second definition, but: Is it possible to exorcise conflict from politics and from society itself through the concentration of forces in a sovereign power, and the imposition of a universal order? Moreover, this document will try to approach Hobbes. political ideas, in the reading of two plays of the English literature: William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", the former being written before Hobbes' work and the latter after it.
