SERIAL publications , *INTERPROFESSIONAL relations , *SECONDARY analysis , *DESCRIPTIVE statistics , *PEDIATRICS , *BIBLIOMETRICS , *PUBLISHING , *BUSINESS networks , *ANESTHESIOLOGY - Abstract
Background: Collaborations are an essential element of scientific activity and particularly important in fields such as pediatric anesthesiology, where the evidence base in general is relatively limited. A recent scientometric analysis revealed a geographic diversification of publication activity in pediatric anesthesiology within the last two decades, accompanied by a surge in international collaborations. Objectives: Given the hypothesis of a similar growth in the activity and dynamics of publications in pediatric anesthesiology, the objective of this scientometric study was to analyze the publication activity and collaboration habits in research in pediatric anesthesiology from Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH). Method: This secondary analysis identified all publications on pediatric anesthesiology with an affiliation from the D‑A-CH countries between 2001 and 2020 from PubMed and Web of Science. The query parameters included the timeframe 2001–2020, authors' affiliations tied to anesthesiology departments (using various forms of the term "anesthesia"), and the mention of pediatric interest in titles or abstracts. The data underwent standardization to account for linguistic variations. The publications were assigned to a state, city and institution based on the correspondence address, to a year based on the publication date and to a source based on the journal. The primary endpoint was publication activity and dynamics, represented by the number of publications and the respective growth rates (calculated as the linear regression slope). Secondary endpoints included the share of collaborations within and outside the D‑A-CH region (at the country and institutional level), the distribution of publication activity and the most prominent sources of publications. Results: Between 2001 and 2020 a total of 3406 publications on pediatric anesthesiology involving authors from the D‑A-CH countries were identified. Of these 2807 (82.4%) had a correspondence address in D‑A-CH. The average annual growth rate of publications with a correspondence address was + 2.9% for the D‑A-CH countries and + 7.7% for publications with collaborations. The number of publications in which an institution from D‑A-CH was named as a coauthor from a correspondence address outside D‑A-CH also increased by an average of 7.4% per year during the study period. The majority of collaborations occurred between institutions within the D‑A-CH region, although Swiss institutions exhibited a much higher proportion of collaborations outside the region. Of all publications with a correspondence address 90% originated from 46 cities. The most prominent source was Die Anästhesiologie for publications from Germany, and Pediatric Anesthesia for publications from Austria and Switzerland. Conclusion: The number of publications in pediatric anesthesiology from the D‑A-CH countries has increased over the past two decades, accompanied by a surge in collaborations. It is hoped that increased collaboration will contribute to a higher level of evidence in pediatric anesthesiology care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 41st Problem Conference of Medical Libraries in Szczecin 2024 "Artificial intelligence and medical libraries – are we on the verge of a transformation?" ("Sztuczna inteligencja a biblioteki medyczne – czy jesteśmy u progu transformacji?" XLI Konferencja Problemowa Bibliotek Medycznych) focused on the use of artificial intelligence to optimize established and develop new library services and work processes. In addition to efficiency gains through AI, the potential for innovative teaching and marketing strategies was highlighted, while critical voices warned against unrealistic expectations. The author of the conference report sees structural differences in the comparison between libraries in Poland and in the DACH region, but emphasizes the common challenges that providers of information services face today in order to keep pace with the rapid development in the field of AI. GEOMORPHOLOGY , *STREAM restoration , *SEDIMENT transport , *ENVIRONMENTAL quality , *GEOGRAPHERS , *RISK assessment - Abstract
Hydrogeomorphology studies river dynamics, focusing on the interactions between flow structure, sediment transport, and the morphologies that characterize rivers and their watersheds. It provides an analytical framework and tools for better integrating knowledge of river dynamics into river management in the broadest sense, and more specifically, into river restoration as well as into the assessment and prevention of risks associated with fluvial hazards. In Quebec, hydrogeomorphology is emerging as a significant contribution to risk assessment and management approaches, and is at the heart of a paradigm shift in river management whereby process restoration aims to increase the resilience of fluvial systems and societies, and improve the quality of fluvial environments. This contribution outlines the trajectory of hydrogeomorphology in Quebec, based on scientific publications by Quebec geographers, and discusses the discipline's aims in research and knowledge integration for river management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to trace the footsteps of Ismaël Boulliau (also known as Bullialdus) in the dust of history, we adopt a quantitative approach based on an analysis of the extensive literature which has been digitized and which is therefore open to the application of computerized bibliometric techniques to detect patterns and trends over time. In particular, we use the Google Books database which contains millions of digitized books, manuscripts, reports, etc. in several languages. We apply the Google Ngram software to analyze the rate of referencing Boulliau’s work in the literature, in timeseries form. We also search Google Scholar which is an academic bibliographic database and search engine and is in many cases the most comprehensive source. The results show clear evidence that Boulliau was a man who escaped the limitations of old paradigms of thought and influenced the advancement of European science long after his death.

Technical advances enable open access as well as independence from established publishers. This results questions of responsible editorship. What does independence mean in terms of the design of quality assurance processes, handling of bibliometrics, foremost the Journal Impact Factor, or visibility? This article showcases and critically reflects the findings of an empirical study on the responsibility of editorship in medicine and philosophy. They point towards the critical role of libraries with their publishing consultation services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examines the Canadian information research landscape through the lens of the eight academic units hosting ALA-accredited programs. We created a citation-based network utilizing the scholarly articles published by the faculty members and PhD students at each academic unit to identify and characterize distinct research clusters within the field. Then we determined how the publications and researchers from each unit are distributed across the clusters to describe their area of specialization. Our findings emphasize how the inter-, multi-, and transdisciplinary nature of the Canadian information research landscape forms a rich mosaic of information scholarship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the use of institutional repositories for self-archiving peerreviewed work in the U15 (an association of fifteen Canadian research-intensive universities). It relates usage with university open access (OA) policy types and publisher policy embargoes. We show that of all articles found in OpenAlex attributed to U15 researchers, 45.1 to 56.6% are available as Gold or Green OA, yet only 0.5 to 10.7% (mean 4.2%) of these can be found on their respective U15 IRs. Our investigation shows a lack of OA policies from most institutions, journal policies with embargoes exceeding 12 months, and incomplete policy information. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The publication and distribution of scientific results is of major importance for the functioning of an information society and the tackling of the complex challenges the world faces today. It is not only scholars who rely on scientific publications to advance research but also the general public which demands scientific knowledge for its forthcoming. Major suppliers of scientific knowledge are the researchers themselves, science communicators and science journalists – each of which choose their very own approaches to selection, presentation and communication of science, often depending on the target group. Although different in their goals and approaches, digital media in particular has led to great overlaps which result in interwoven relationships equally affecting both external and internal forms of science communication. This edited book describes, quantifies and critically discusses the interplay between publisher- and journalism-driven science communication and its effect on the scholarly communication system, especially on the measures of impact evaluation. Despite the feminization of the medical profession, the academic world remains largely male-dominated. Several studies conducted in the English-speaking world have shown that women are published less than men. Our goal is to define the evolution of the role of women in five French medical journals. The articles from five French journals (Revue du Praticien, Bulletin du Cancer, Exercer, Presse Médicale, Cancer/Radiothérapie) published in February between 1983 and 2019 were included. We selected twelve years from that period of time. The analysis was completed using Cochran-Armitage tests with a significance level of < 0,05. Among the authors, 4397 were included in total and we were able to determine the gender of 4309 of them. The percentage of female authors went from 16% in 1983 to 36.4% in 2019 (p < 0.001). This rise is more significant for those specializing in surgery than for those specializing in medicine, with a percentage going from 14% to 38.5% (p < 0.001) against 16.8% to 35.4% (p < 0.001) respectively. In 2019, women still only represent 30.2% of the last authors, 27.6% of editorial authors and 30.6% of corresponding authors. Our study underlines a significant increase in the number of female authors and highlights that their position as authors remains on the margins of the most prestigious authorial positions. While we can celebrate this increase, we nevertheless notice that there are fewer female authors than female practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article argues that librarians today have a reliable tool at hand to assess the "market value" of a body of scholarly work published in book form at one glance. "WorldCat Identities" is a freely available bibliometric tool under OCLC WorldCat already used for scientometric and bibliometric literature as an apt instrument to measure the global influence of complete works. Humanities and continental European social sciences, where journal papers do not (yet) play a major role in assessing the academic performance and achievement of researchers, could particularly benefit from this system, which, from the perspective of library science also offers an amazing strategic opportunity to get involved in assessing the importance of a body of work more objectively. The paper introduces general aspects of the "WorldCat Identities" system and discusses its application in political science contexts, based on a sample of more than 100 habilitated Austrian political scientists and laureates of the Skytte Prize. BIBLIOGRAPHIC databases , *LIBRARY administration , *ALTMETRICS , *BIBLIOMETRICS , *LIBRARIES , *LIBRARY science - Abstract
Bibliometrics is a current topic in many libraries. It is often associated with many questions, which are also repeated from time to time. In this article, the two authors have identified the 10 most frequently asked questions and try to answer them in separate and independent sections. They address questions about data providers such as Web of Science, Scopus and Dimensions, but also PubMed, ArXiv, EconBiz, as well as bibliometric indicators such as the Journal Impact Factor (JIF), CiteScore (CS), Scimago Journal Rank (SJR), Source Normalized Impact per paper (SNIP). However, spotlights will also be put on related topics such as Open Access and Altmetrics e. g. Altmetric.com, Plum Metric and Article-Level-Metric (ALM). The organizational embedding, the question of how culture-changing topics affect science management and libraries as well as the aspect that libraries should take on an expert function on these data-driven topics complete the article. BIBLIOMETRICS , *DECISION making , *BIBLIOTHERAPY , *POLICY sciences , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges - Abstract
This article explores the extent to which institutional services for bibliometrics and open access at German universities relate to each other. Although recent science policies note an increasing role of data-driven decision making around open access, only a few universities make use of bibliometrics as part of their open access services. While bibliometrics services increasingly reflect ethical aspects in terms of responsible use, problematic examples can be found. Institutional activities to monitor open access benefit from standardized and networked research information as well as from collaboration within a university network. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents advanced bibliometric and scientometric data collected on a tried sample of 104 Austrian political scientists and 51 transnational publishing companies that reveal close statistical links between indicators of a strong presence of scientists and transnational publishing companies in academic teaching classes across the globe (Classroom Citation measured using Open Syllabus) and other, more traditional bibliometric and scientometric indicators (Libcitation measured using OCLC Worldcat and the H-index of citations in specialist journals worldwide, or the Book Citation Index, both monitored by the Scopus system). The statistical calculations, based on factor analysis, show a close statistical relationship between these dimensions. Tables 5 and 9 in this paper (component correlations) corroborate the findings. The multivariant rankings based on eigenvalue factor scores in Table 6 show the 15 Austrian political scientists who proved most successful in the global scientific market. Moreover, the methods in Table 10 indicate that, for early-career scientists, the globally leading academic publishers analysed in this paper are reliable partners in the dissemination of scientific findings across the globe and the promotion of academic careers in a period of institutional and financial uncertainties. POLITICAL sociology , *PUBLIC demonstrations , *POLITICAL science , *SOCIOLOGY - Abstract
We live in a time of protest. Relative to sociology, political science has traditionally paid little attention to 'extra-institutional' forms of political behaviour. For its part, sociology has tended to prioritize the explanation of mobilization processes over political outcomes. Using bibliometric records from 14 political science and sociology journals over the last two decades, this study demonstrates that protest has witnessed a resurgence of interest in political science and that both sociology and political science now share a focus on the outcomes of protest. The article lays out key trends in this research agenda and suggests what is missing, arguing that a political sociology of protest should integrate recent findings from both disciplines to better understand elite decision-making, the mediation of protest information and protestor aims. This study assesses the nature of Canada’s rapid research response through term and keyword bibliometric analysis. The following asks: What are the major areas of COVID-19 rapid research output conducted in Canada during the first five and half months of 2020, and how can the results of this analysis inform future accelerated research efforts toward an effective response to infectious disease emergencies? The results suggest that infection prevention, epidemiology, therapeutics, and public health strategies were among the topproducing research areas in Canada during the onset of the pandemic. Moreover, the analysis reflects gaps in the literature addressing diagnostics and vaccine development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite much progress since the mid-20th century, there still exists a disparity in the number of female academics relative to their male colleagues. This gender gap has come under increased focus as universities take steps to foster diversity and inclusiveness. Bibliometrics can provide a window into the gender disparity in research by measuring the metadata of academic publications. By determining the ratio of female to male authors, the gender bias at the level of the institution can be quantified. This study examines the proportion of female authors of academic articles at thirty Canadian universities across five broad fields of research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forschungsnahe Dienste ,Forschungsunterstützung ,Forschungsdatenmanagement ,Personalentwicklung ,Organisationsentwicklung ,Bibliometrie ,Bibliography. Library science. Information resources - Abstract
