We investigate the location of the critical and tricritical points of the three-dimensional Blume-Capel model by analyzing the behavior of the first Lee-Yang zero, the density of partition function zeros, and higher-order cumulants of the magnetization. Our analysis is conducted through Monte Carlo simulations, intentionally using only small system sizes. We demonstrate that this approach yields excellent results for studying the critical behavior of the model. Our findings indicate that at the tricritical point, where logarithmic corrections are anticipated, the numerical results align closely with the theoretical exponents describing these corrections. These expected values are then employed to accurately determine the coordinates of the tricritical point. At the model's critical point, the corrections correspond to those of the three-dimensional Ising model criticality, which we also use to precisely ascertain the critical temperature at zero crystal field. Here we review a universal model for chirally induced spin-selectivity (CISS) as a standalone effect occurring in chiral molecules. We tie together the results of forward scattering in the gas phase to the results for photoelectrons in chiral self-assembled monolayers and the more contemporary results in two terminal transport setups. We discuss the ingredients that are necessarily present in all experiments to date, which we identify as: i) chirality, be it point, helical or configurational, ii) the spin-orbit coupling as the spin active coupling of atomic origin, iii) decoherence as a time-reversal symmetry breaking mechanism that avoids reciprocity relations in the linear regime and finally iv) tunneling that accounts for the magnitude of the spin polarization effect. This proposal does not discard other mechanisms that can yield comparable spin effects related to interactions of the molecule to contacts or substrates that have been proposed but that are less universal or apply to particular situations. Finally, we discuss recent results suggesting CISS as a molecular phenomenon in the real of enantiomer selectivity, coherent electron transfer, and spin effects in chiroptical activity.

We report a model for hyperthermia therapies based on heat diffusion in a biological tissue containing a topological defect. Biological tissues behave like active liquid crystals with the presence of topological defects which are likely to anchor tumors during the metastatic phase of cancer evolution and the therapy challenge is to destroy the cancer cells without damaging surrounding healthy tissues. The defect creates an effective non-Euclidean geometry for low-energy excitations, modifying the bio-heat equation. Applications to protocols of thermal ablation for various biological tissues (liver, prostate, and skin) is analyzed and discussed., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures

In the 1960's, four famous scaling relations were developed which relate the six standard critical exponents describing continuous phase transitions in the thermodynamic limit of statistical physics models. They are well understood at a fundamental level through the renormalization group. They have been verified in multitudes of theoretical, computational and experimental studies and are firmly established and profoundly important for our understanding of critical phenomena. One of the scaling relations, hyperscaling, fails above the upper critical dimension. There, critical phenomena are governed by Gaussian fixed points in the renormalization-group formalism. Dangerous irrelevant variables are required to deliver the mean-field and Landau values of the critical exponents, which are deemed valid by the Ginzburg criterion. Also above the upper critical dimension, the standard picture is that, unlike for low-dimensional systems, finite-size scaling is non-universal. Here we report on new developments which indicate that the current paradigm is flawed and incomplete. In particular, the introduction of a new exponent characterising the finite-size correlation length allows one to extend hyperscaling beyond the upper critical dimension. Moreover, finite-size scaling is shown to be universal provided the correct scaling window is chosen. These recent developments also lead to the introduction of a new scaling relation analogous to one introduced by Fisher 50 years ago.

Scaling, hyperscaling and finite-size scaling were long considered problematic in theories of critical phenomena in high dimensions. The scaling relations themselves form a model-independent structure that any model-specific theory must adhere to, and they are accounted for by the simple principle of homogeneity. Finite-size scaling is similarly founded on the fundamental idea that only two length scales enter the game -- namely system length and correlation length. While all scaling relations are quite satisfactory for multitudes of physical systems in low dimensions, one fails in high dimensions...

A very famous ``test'' of the General Theory of Relativity (GTR) is the advance of Mercury's perihelion (and of other planets too). To be more precise, this is not a prediction of General Relativity, since the anomaly was known in the XIXth century, but no consistent explanation had been found yet at the time GTR was elaborated. Einstein came up with a solution to the problem in 1914. In the case of Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, the effect is more pronounced than for other planets, and observed from Earth; there is an advance of the perihelion of Mercury of about 5550~arc seconds per century (as/cy). Among these, about $5000$ are due to the equinox precession (the precise value is {$5025.645$}~as/cy) and about $500$ ({$531.54$}) to the influence of the external planets. The remaining, about $50$~as/cy ({$42.56$}), are not understood within Newtonian mechanics. Here, we revisit the problem in some detail for a presentation at the undergraduate level.

In this note, we revisit the scaling relations among ``hatted critical exponents'' which were first derived by Ralph Kenna, Des Johnston and Wolfhard Janke, and we propose an alternative derivation for some of them. For the scaling relation involving the behavior of the correlation function, we will propose an alternative form since we believe that the expression is erroneous in the work of Ralph and his collaborators.

We show that the study of critical properties of the Blume-Capel model at two dimensions can be deduced from Monte Carlo simulations with good accuracy even for small system sizes when one analyses the behaviour of the zeros of the partition function. The phase diagram of the model displays a line of second-order phase transitions ending at a tricritical point, then a line of first-order transitions. We concentrate on critical and tricritical properties and compare the accuracy achieved via standard finite-size scaling of thermodynamic quantities with that from the zeros analysis. This latter analysis showcases spectacular precision, even for systems as small as 64 spins! Chirally Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) is a transport phenomenon observed in both linear and non-linear regimes, where the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) acts as the key driver and electron tunneling serves as the dominant mechanism for charge transfer. Despite SOC's inherent time-reversal symmetry (TRS) preservation, conventional reciprocity relations limit spin polarization and the differential treatment of spin species. In experimental systems, an additional factor, spin-independent decoherence, disrupts TRS and reciprocity. We introduce decoherence using the Buttiker voltage probe within the scattering matrix framework. Our results reveal the importance of under-the-barrier decoherence as an order-of-magnitude polarization enhancement mechanism. Polarization arises by the disruption of spin precession around the spin-orbit magnetic field with a new spin component along the field direction. The alignment of polarization depends on interference effects produced by the voltage probe. We progress finite-size scaling in systems with free boundary conditions above their upper critical dimension, where in the thermodynamic limit critical scaling is described by mean-field theory. Recent works show that the correlation length is not bound by the system's physical size, a belief that long held sway. Instead, two scaling regimes can be observed - at the critical and pseudo-critical temperatures. We demonstrate that both are manifest for free boundaries. We use numerical simulations of the $d=5$ Ising model to analyse the magnetization, susceptibility, magnetization Fourier modes and the partition function zeros. While some of the response functions hide the dual finite-size scaling, the precision enabled by the analysis of Lee-Yang zeros allows this be brought to the fore. In particular, finite-size scaling of leading zeros at the pseudo-critical point confirms recent predictions coming from correlations exceeding the system size. It is common practice to take for granted the equality (up to the constant $\varepsilon_0$) of the electric displacement ($\bf{D}$) and electric ($\bf{E}$) field vectors in vacuum. The same happens with the magnetic field ($\bf{H}$) and the magnetic flux density ($\bf{B}$) vectors (up to the constant $\mu_0^{-1}$). The fact that gravity may change this by effectively inducing dielectric or magnetic responses to the primary fields is commonly overlooked. It is the purpose of this communication to call attention to classical polarization or magnetization of the vacuum due to the concomitant presence of gravitational and electromagnetic sources. The formalism of differential forms (exterior calculus) is used since it provides a clear-cut way to achieve this. This work offers new routes for possible detection of various spacetime geometries via their electromagnetic manifestations and the way they influence light propagation.

Although well described by mean-field theory in the thermodynamic limit, scaling has long been puzzling for finite systems in high dimensions. This raised questions about the efficacy of the renormalization group and foundational concepts such as universality, finite-size scaling and hyperscaling, until recently believed not to be applicable above the upper critical dimension. Significant theoretical progress has been made resolving these issues, and tested in numerous simulational studies of spin models. This progress rests upon superlinearity of correlation length, a notion that for a long time encountered resistance but is now broadly accepted. Percolation theory brings added complications such as proliferation of interpenetrating clusters in apparent conflict with suggestions coming from random-graph asymptotics and a dearth of reliable simulational guidance. Here we report on recent theoretical progress in percolation theory in the renormalization group framework in high dimensions that accommodates superlinear correlation and renders most of the above concepts mutually compatible under different boundary conditions. Results from numerical simulations for free and periodic boundary conditions which differentiate between previously competing theories are also presented. The Potts model with invisible states was introduced to explain discrepancies between theoretical predictions and experimental observations of phase transitions in some systems where $Z_q$ symmetry is spontaneously broken. It differs from the ordinary $q$-state Potts model in that each spin, besides the usual $q$ visible states, can be also in any of $r$ so-called invisible states. Spins in an invisible state do not interact with their neighbours but they do contribute to the entropy of the system. As a consequence, an increase in $r$ may cause a phase transition to change from second to first order. Potts models with invisible states describe a number of systems of interest in physics and beyond and have been treated by various tools of statistical and mathematical physics. Basic questions on the nature of spin polarization in two terminal systems and the way in which decoherence breaks Time-Reversal Symmetry (TRS) are analyzed. We exactly solve several one-dimensional models of tunneling electrons and show the interplay of spin precession and decay of the wavefunction in either a U(1) magnetic field or an effective Spin-Orbit (SO) magnetic field. Spin polarization is clearly identified as the emergence of a spin component parallel to either magnetic field. We show that Onsager's reciprocity is fulfilled when time reversal symmetry is present and no spin polarization arises, no matter the barrier parameters or the SO strength. Introducing a Buttiker's decoherence probe, that preserves unitarity of time evolution, we show that breaking of TRS results in a strong spin polarization for realistic SO, and barrier strengths. We discuss the significance of these results as a very general scenario for the onset of the Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity effect (CISS), now possibly matching experiments in a quantitative manner., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

Liquid crystals generally support orientational singularities of the director field known as topological defects. These latter modifiy transport properties in their vicinity as if the geometry was non-Euclidean. We present a state of the art of the differential geometry of nematic liquid crystals, with a special emphasis on linear defects. We then discuss unexpected but deep connections with cosmology and high-energy-physics, and conclude with a review on defect engineering for transport phenomena.

Liquid crystals are assemblies of rod-like molecules which self-organize to form mesophases, in-between ordinary liquids and anisotropic crystals. At each point, the molecules collectively orient themselves along a privileged direction, which locally defines an orientational order. Sometimes, this order is broken and singularities appear in the form of topological defects. This tutorial article is dedicated to the geometry, topology and physics of these defects. We introduce the main models used to describe the nematic phase and discuss the isotropic-nematic phase transition. Then, we present the different families of defects in nematics and examine some of their physical outcomes. Finally, we show that topological defects are universal patterns of nature, appearing not only in soft matter, but also in biology, cosmology, geology and even particle physics., Comment: 40 pages, 9 figures, review paper

We study the diffusion processes of a real scalar field in the presence of the distorsion field induced by a chiral topological defect. The defect modifies the usual Euclidean background geometry into a non-diagonal Riemann-Cartan geometry characterized by a singular torsion field. The new form of the diffusion equation is established and the scalar field distribution in the vicinity of the defect is investigated numerically. Results show a high sensitivity to the boundary conditions. In the transient regime, we find that the defect vorticity generates an angular momentum associated to the diffusion flow and we discuss its main properties.

We propose to develop the Kalb-Ramond theory in four-dimensional spacetime at the level of a classical field theory by following the same formal development steps as in Maxwell theory of standard electrodynamics. Solutions of Kalb-Ramond theory in the presence of static sources in various curved spacetimes are then analyzed. A question that we address here is that of a possible Kalb-Ramond polarization in curved spacetimes, like one can encounter a dielectric polarization in ordinary Maxwell electrodynamics in certain types of spacetimes.

These lecture notes provide an overview of the renormalization group (RG) as a successful framework to understand critical phenomena above the upper critical dimension $d_{\rm uc}$. After an introduction to the scaling picture of continuous phase transitions, we discuss the apparent failure of the Gaussian fixed point to capture scaling for Landau mean-field theory, which should hold in the thermodynamic limit above $d_{\rm uc}$. We recount how Fisher's dangerous-irrelevant-variable formalism applied to thermodynamic functions partially repairs the situation but at the expense of hyperscaling and finite-size scaling, both of which were, until recently, believed not to apply above $d_{\rm uc}$. We recall limitations of various attempts to match the RG with analytical and numerical results for Ising systems. We explain how the extension of dangerous irrelevancy to the correlation sector is key to marrying the above concepts into a comprehensive RG scaling picture that renders hyperscaling and finite-size scaling valid in all dimensions. We collect what we believe is the current status of the theory, including some new insights and results. This paper is in grateful memory of Michael Fisher who introduced many of the concepts discussed and who, half a century later, contributed to their advancement.

We consider a recently introduced generalization of the Ising model in which individual spin strength can vary. The model is intended for analysis of ordering in systems comprising agents which, although matching in their binarity (i.e., maintaining the iconic Ising features of `+' or `$-$', `up' or `down', `yes' or `no'), differ in their strength. To investigate the interplay between variable properties of nodes and interactions between them, we study the model on a complex network where both the spin strength and degree distributions are governed by power laws. We show that in the annealed network approximation, thermodynamic functions of the model are self-averaging and we obtain an exact solution for the partition function. This allows us to derive the leading temperature and field dependencies of thermodynamic functions, their critical behavior, and logarithmic corrections at the interface of different phases. The comment by O. Entin-Wohlman, A. Aharony, and Y. Utsumi, on our paper S. Varela, I. Zambrano, B. Berche, V. Mujica, and E. Medina, Phys. Rev. B 101, 241410(R) (2020) makes a few points related to the validity of our model, especially in the light of the interpretation of Bardarson's theorem: "in the presence of time reversal symmetry and for half-integral spin the transmission eigenvalues of the two terminal scattering matrix come in (Kramers) degenerate pairs". The authors of the comment first propose an ansatz for the wave function in the spin active region and go on to show that the resulting transmission does not show spin dependence, reasoning that spin dependence would violate Bardarson's assertion. Here we clearly show that the ansatz presented assumes spin-momentum independence from the outset and thus just addresses the spinless particle problem. We then find the appropriate eigenfunction contemplating spin-momentum coupling and show that the resulting spectrum obeys Bardarson's theorem. Finally we show that the allowed wavevectors are the ones assumed in the original paper and thus the original conclusions follow. We recognize that the Hamiltonian in our paper written in local coordinates on a helix was deceptively simple and offer the expressions of how it should be written to more overtly convey the physics involved. The relation between spin polarization and torque becomes clear, as described in our paper. This response is a very important clarification in relation to the implications of Bardarson's theorem concerning the possibility of spin polarization in one dimensional systems in the linear regime.

The investigation of curved low-dimensional systems is a topic of great research interest. Such investigations include two-dimensional systems with cylindrical symmetry. In this work, we present a numerical study of the electronic transport properties of metallic nanotubes deviating from the cylindrical form either by having a bump or a depression, and under the influence of a magnetic field. Under these circumstances, it is found that the nanotube may be used as an energy high-pass filter for electrons. The illuminating role of differential forms in electromagnetism is seldom discussed in the classroom. It is the aim of this article to bring forth some of the relevant insights that can be learnt from a differential forms approach to E\&M. The article is self-contained in that no previous knowledge of forms is needed to follow it through. The effective polarization of the classical vacuum due to a uniform gravitational field and of the quantum vacuum in the Casimir effect are used to illustrate the power and easiness of interpretation of differential forms in dealing with electromagnetism in nontrivial situations. We hope that this article motivates the physics teacher to bring the subject of differential forms to the classroom.

Chiral degrees of freedom occur in matter and in electromagnetic fields and constitute an area of research that is experiencing renewed interest driven by recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in chiral molecules and engineered nanomaterials. The CISS effect underpins the fact that charge transport through nanoscopic chiral structures favors a particular electronic spin orientation, resulting in large room-temperature spin polarizations. Observations of the CISS effect suggest opportunities for spin control and for the design and fabrication of room-temperature quantum devices from the bottom up, with atomic-scale precision. Any technology that relies on optimal charge transport, including quantum devices for logic, sensing, and storage, may benefit from chiral quantum properties. These properties can be theoretically and experimentally investigated from a quantum information perspective, which is presently lacking. There are uncharted implications for the quantum sciences once chiral couplings can be engineered to control the storage, transduction, and manipulation of quantum information. This forward-looking perspective provides a survey of the experimental and theoretical fundamentals of chiral-influenced quantum effects, and presents a vision for their future roles in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

A very large thermoelectric figure of merit ZT = 6 at 380 K has recently been reported in Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al under thin-film form (Hinterleitner et al., Nature 576 (2019) 85). Under this form, Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al experimentally crystallizes in a disordered A2 crystal structure, different from its bulk-form structure (L21). First principles calculations of the electronic structure performed in A2-Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al supercells generated by the Special Quasi-random Structure (SQS) method are thus reported here. These calculations unambiguously indicate that A2-Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al is a ferromagnetic metal at 0 K, displaying a small Seebeck coefficient at 400 K (< 30 microV/K). The present results contradict the scenario of the occurrence of a deep pseudo-gap at the Fermi level, previously invoked to justify ZT = 6 in Fe$_2$V$_{0.8}$W$_{0.2}$Al thin films.

We introduce varying spin strengths to the Ising model, a central pillar of statistical physics. With inhomogeneous physical systems in mind, but also anticipating interdisciplinary applications, we present the model on network structures of varying degrees of complexity. We solve it for the generic case of power-law spin strength and find that, with a self-averaging free energy, the model has a rich phase diagram with new universality classes. Indeed, the degree of complexity added by variable spins is on a par to that added by endowing simple networks with increasingly realistic geometries. It is suitable for modeling emergent phenomena in many-body systems in contexts where non-identicality of spins or agents plays an essential role and for exporting statistical physics concepts beyond physics., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure

Knowing the electronic structure of a material is essential in energy applications to rationalize its performance and propose alternatives. Materials for thermoelectric applications are generally small-gap semiconductors and should have a high figure of merit ZT. Even if the Fe2VAl Heusler compound has a decent ZT, its conductive nature (semi-metal or semiconductor) is not yet clarified especially at low temperature. In this paper, we focus our DFT calculations on the effect of temperature on the bandgap of Fe2VAl. In contrast to what is usually observed, we show that both the temperature increase and the formation of thermally-activated Al/V inversion defects (observed experimentally), open the bandgap. Such an unusual behavior is the key for reconciling all bandgap measurements performed on the Fe2VAl compound using a standard GGA functional and could be an efficient way for improving the thermoelectric properties of this family of materials., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Electron transfer (ET) in biological molecules such as peptides and proteins consists of electrons moving between well defined localized states (donors to acceptors) through a tunneling process. Here we present an analytical model for ET by tunneling in DNA, in the presence of Spin-Orbit (SO) interaction, to produce a strong spin asymmetry with the intrinsic atomic SO strength in meV range. We obtain a Hamiltonian consistent with charge transport through $\pi$ orbitals on the DNA bases and derive the behavior of ET as a function of the injection state momentum, the spin-orbit coupling and barrier length and strength. A highly consistent scenario arises where two concomitant mechanisms for spin selection arises; spin interference and differential spin amplitude decay. High spin filtering can take place at the cost of reduced amplitude transmission assuming realistic values for the spin-orbit coupling. The spin filtering scenario is completed by addressing the spin dependent torque under the barrier, with a consistent conserved definition for the spin current.

The power factor of pure p-type ZnSb has been calculated via ab initio simulations assuming that the carrier concentrations are due to the doping effect of intrinsic zinc vacancies. With a vacancy concentration close to the experimental solubility limit we were able to perfectly reproduce the Power Factor measured in polycrystalline ZnSb samples. The methodology has then been successfully extended for predicting the effect of extrinsic doping elements on the thermoelectric properties of ZnSb. Germanium and tin seem to be promising p-type doping elements. In addition, we give, for the first time, an explanation of why it is difficult to synthesize polycrystalline n-type ZnSb samples. Indeed, compensative effects between intrinsic defects (zinc vacancies) and doping elements (Ga, or In) explain the existence of an optimal (and relatively high) dopant concentration necessary to convert ZnSb into an n-type semiconductor.

Since the logarithm function is the solution of Poisson's equation in two dimensions, it appears as the Coulomb interaction in two dimensions, the interaction between Abrikosov flux lines in a type II superconductor, or between line defects in elastic media, and so on. Lattices of lines interacting logarithmically are, therefore, a subject of intense research due to their manifold applications. The solution of the Poisson equation for such lattices is known in the form of an infinite sum since the late 1990's. We study the quantum dynamics of ballistic electrons in rotating carbon nanotubes in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. When the field is parallel to the nanotube axis, the rotation-induced electric field brings about the spin-orbit interaction which, together with the kinetic, inertial, and Zeeman terms, compose the Schr\"odinger-Pauli Hamiltonian of the system. Full diagonalization of this Hamiltonian yields the eigenstates and eigenenergies leading to the calculation of the charge and spin currents. Our main result is the demonstration that, by suitably combining the applied magnetic field intensity and rotation speed, one can tune one of the currents to zero while keeping the other one finite, giving rise to a spin current generator.

We present an analytical model for the role of hydrogen bonding on the spin-orbit coupling of model DNA molecule. Here we analyze in detail the electric fields due to the polarization of the Hydrogen bond on the DNA base pairs and derive, within tight binding analytical band folding approach, an intrinsic Rashba coupling which should dictate the order of the spin active effects in the Chiral-Induced Spin Selectivity (CISS) effect. The coupling found is ten times larger than the intrinsic coupling estimated previously and points to the predominant role of hydrogen bonding in addition to chirality in the case of biological molecules. We expect similar dominant effects in oligopeptides, where the chiral structure is supported by hydrogen-bonding and bears on orbital carrying transport electrons.

We investigate the charge carrier dynamics in bilayer graphene subject to monochromatic laser irradiation within the Landau level quantization regime. Even though the radiation field does not lift the energy degeneracy of the lowest Landau levels (LLs), it nevertheless has a strong effect on the photoinduced pseudospin polarization response for higher LLs ($n\ge2$). Our results show that the photoinduced bandgaps lead to a finite response of the averaged pseudospin polarization with nontrivial oscillating behavior. It is shown that the contribution from these higher LL transitions turns out to be crucial to achieve an enhanced photoinduced polarization in radiated bilayer graphene. We examine the optical properties of two different configurations of a cylindrical device made from a hyperbolic metamaterial with optical axis defined by circular and radial director fields. The hyperbolic metamaterial is an uniaxial anisotropic medium for which the ratio between ordinary and extraordinary permittivities is negative, leading to a particular effective geometry with two timelike coordinates in the metric (Kleinian signature). We examine the effect of a wiggly cosmic string for both massless and massive particle propagation along the string axis. We show that the wave equation that governs the propagation of a scalar field in the neighborhood of a wiggly string is formally equivalent to the quantum wave equation describing the hydrogen atom in two dimensions. We further show that the wiggly string spacetime behaves as a gravitational waveguide in which the quantized wave modes propagate with frequencies that depend on the mass, string energy density, and string tension. We propose an analogy with an optical fiber, defining an effective refractive index likely to mimic the cosmic string effect in the laboratory.

Tracing the evolution of specific topics is a subject area which belongs to the general problem of mapping the structure of scientific knowledge. Often bibliometric data bases are used to study the history of scientific topic evolution from its appearance to its extinction or merger with other topics. In this chapter the authors present an analysis of the academic response to the disaster that occurred in 1986 in Chornobyl (Chernobyl), Ukraine, considered as one of the most devastating nuclear power plant accidents in history. Using a bibliographic database the distributions of Chornobyl-related papers in different scientific fields are analysed, as are their growth rates and properties of co-authorship networks. Elements of descriptive statistics and tools of complex-network theory are used to highlight interdisciplinary as well as international effects. In particular, tools of complex-network science enable information visualization complemented by further quantitative analysis.
